Nothing compares to the magic of Christmas in Grapevine, Texas. This charming town transforms into a winter wonderland with over 1,400 festive events spanning 40 days. Inside this guide, you will discover the top attractions, best hotels, and must-visit restaurants that make Grapevine the official Christmas Capital of Texas. By the end, you will have everything you need to plan an unforgettable holiday getaway your family will treasure for years.

WHY GRAPEVINE IS THE CHRISTMAS CAPITAL OF TEXAS

Messina Hof Grapevine Winery
Messina Hof Grapevine Winery | Photo by Meagan Wristen

The Texas State Senate made it official in 2009, designating Grapevine as the Christmas Capital of Texas. This recognition came after years of the city proving its commitment to holiday excellence.

More than 1,400 festive Christmas events over 40 days transform Grapevine into a storybook destination, attracting over two million visitors annually. The town sits conveniently in the heart of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, making it accessible for both local and out-of-state guests.

Newsweek readers voted Grapevine Best Christmas Town, and the celebration earned recognition as one of the American Bus Association’s Best of the Best Festivals and Events for 2025. These accolades reflect the extraordinary effort Grapevine puts into creating an authentic Christmas experience.

The festivities kick off the Monday before Thanksgiving and continue through New Year’s Day. Millions of lights illuminate Historic Main Street, larger-than-life decorations create perfect photo opportunities, and animated characters bring joy to visitors of all ages. Free parking throughout Historic Main Street makes accessing the magic simple and stress-free.

WHEN TO VISIT GRAPEVINE FOR CHRISTMAS

Season Timeline and Key Dates

The town kicks off the festivities the Monday before Thanksgiving and doesn’t let up until the new year. This extended celebration gives you flexibility in planning your visit.

The opening ceremony, Carol of Lights, launches the season with a spectacular street lighting event. Kids’ activities, food vendors, and live entertainment set the festive tone for everything that follows.

Peak weekends fill up quickly, especially the first two weekends of December when major events like the Parade of Lights take place. Weekday visits offer smaller crowds while still delivering the full Christmas experience. Hotels book months in advance during peak times, so early planning becomes essential for securing your preferred accommodations.

Tickets sell out extremely fast, often within hours of release. Purchase only through official websites to avoid fraudulent third-party sellers. Festive pajamas are encouraged, and all children receive special treatment from Mrs. Claus during the journey.

The train departs from the Historic Cotton Belt District, transformed into the Grapevine Christmas Village. Arrive at least 30 minutes before your scheduled departure, and note that train doors close 10 minutes prior with no exceptions for late arrivals.

Families line the streets hours before the parade begins, bringing blankets and folding chairs. The festive atmosphere includes street vendors selling hot chocolate and seasonal treats.

Merry and Bright Drone Shows

Four hundred drones create Christmas magic over Historic Main Street as synchronized carols play during this ten-minute spectacular. The shows happen on select Mondays in December at 7 PM.

PLANNING TIPS FOR YOUR GRAPEVINE CHRISTMAS TRIP

Ticket Purchasing Strategies

Buy tickets for popular attractions like Santa’s North Pole Express and ICE! as soon as they go on sale, typically in early October. Only purchase through official websites to avoid fraudulent tickets sold by third parties.

Bundle tickets when possible to save money. Package deals combining multiple attractions offer discounts up to 40 percent compared to individual ticket purchases. Overnight guests at participating hotels often receive ticket discounts and priority access to events.

Transportation and Parking

Parking is free throughout Historic Main Street, removing one expense from your trip. However, Main Street closes to vehicle traffic on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday evenings during peak season, requiring alternative parking and walking.

DFW International Airport sits just minutes from Grapevine, making the town easily accessible for visitors flying in. Rental cars provide flexibility for exploring attractions spread across the area. Ride-sharing services operate throughout Grapevine.

Weather Considerations

Texas winter weather can be unpredictable with temperatures ranging from mild to chilly. Dress in layers to adjust as temperatures fluctuate throughout the day. Evening temperatures drop significantly, so bring jackets for outdoor activities.

Most major attractions operate rain or shine. Indoor options like ICE!, Great Wolf Lodge, shopping malls, and restaurants ensure you always have entertainment regardless of weather conditions.

Crowd Management

Weekdays see smaller crowds than weekends, especially the first two weekends of December. Early morning and late afternoon times for popular attractions typically have shorter wait times than mid-day slots.

Many events require advance ticket purchases with assigned time slots, helping manage crowd sizes. Arrive early for free events like the Parade of Lights and drone shows to secure good viewing spots.

Budget Considerations

Hotel packages bundling accommodations with event tickets provide the best value. Three-night stays often qualify for additional discounts. Marriott Bonvoy members receive special rates and earn bonus points.

Free events include the Carol of Lights, Parade of Lights, drone shows, and walking tours of decorated Main Street. Many restaurants offer reasonable prices alongside their upscale counterparts. Strategic planning lets you experience Grapevine’s Christmas magic at various price points.

Duration of Stay

A weekend provides enough time to hit major highlights like the North Pole Express, ICE!, ice skating, and dining on Main Street. A three to four day trip allows a more relaxed pace with time for shopping, additional attractions, and exploring the area.

Extended stays let you experience multiple major events that occur on specific days like the Parade of Lights and drone shows. The variety of 1,400 events over 40 days means you will not run out of activities regardless of trip length.

NEARBY ATTRACTIONS BEYOND CHRISTMAS

While Christmas activities dominate the season, Grapevine offers other attractions worth exploring during your visit.

Fort Worth Stockyards

The Grapevine Vintage Railroad runs regular excursions to the historic Fort Worth Stockyards, about 30 minutes away. The area features Western-themed shopping, restaurants, and daily cattle drives. The stockyards maintain their Old West atmosphere year-round.

Grapevine Lake

Multiple parks surround the lake offering hiking trails, picnic areas, and scenic views. The Gaylord Texan Resort overlooks the lake, and several restaurants provide lakeside dining. The recreational area provides outdoor options when you need a break from Christmas crowds.

DFW Area Attractions

Grapevine’s central location in the Dallas Fort Worth Metroplex puts you within an hour of numerous attractions. Dallas offers museums, professional sports, and diverse dining scenes. Fort Worth provides cultural attractions like the Kimbell Art Museum and Fort Worth Zoo.

SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS FOR FAMILIES

Age-Appropriate Activities

Grapevine’s Christmas offerings cater to all age groups, but some experiences work better for specific ages. The North Pole Express delights children ages three to ten the most, though families with older or younger kids still enjoy the experience.

ICE! accommodates all ages with the carved sculptures fascinating adults and ice slides thrilling children. The cold temperature inside requires warm clothing for everyone. Babies may need lots of extra layers beyond the provided parkas. Better yet, don’t bring a baby.

LEGOLAND Discovery Center targets children ages three to ten with hands-on building activities and themed rides. Teenagers may find it too juvenile unless they are LEGO enthusiasts. Great Wolf Lodge appeals to a wider age range with its variety of water slides and pools.

Accessibility Information

Most major attractions provide wheelchair access and accommodations for guests with disabilities. The Grapevine Vintage Railroad uses a lift to board passengers who cannot use stairs. ICE! provides wheelchair access throughout the attraction.

Peace Plaza Ice Rink accommodates guests with mobility challenges, and staff can assist with equipment. Restaurants on Main Street vary in accessibility with older buildings sometimes presenting challenges. Call ahead to confirm specific needs.

Stroller-Friendly Considerations

Historic Main Street’s sidewalks accommodate strollers, though weekend crowds can make navigation challenging. ICE! allows strollers, but the cold temperatures and ice-covered floors require caution. Many families choose to carry young children or use front carriers instead.

Gaylord Texan Resort provides ample space for strollers throughout its facilities. Great Wolf Lodge welcomes strollers in public areas but prohibits them in the water park for safety reasons.

PHOTOGRAPHY OPPORTUNITIES

Christmas in Grapevine creates countless photo opportunities for preserving memories and sharing on social media.

Best Photo Spots

 • Under the 60-foot Christmas tree at Peace Plaza: The massive illuminated tree provides a stunning backdrop for family portraits. Evening photos capture the full effect of the lights.
 • ICE! sculptures: Every room offers unique backdrops with colorful ice carvings. The iconic Elf movie scenes recreated in ice make memorable photos.
 • North Pole Express train: Both inside the vintage coaches and outside with the decorated train create classic Christmas photos. Professional photographers capture free photos with Santa included in your ticket price.
 • Historic Main Street lights: The buildings decorated with millions of lights create magical evening photography opportunities. The vintage architecture adds charm to every shot.
 • Gaylord Texan atrium: The indoor gardens decorated for Christmas provide beautiful backdrops without weather concerns.

DINING RESERVATIONS AND TIMING

Popular restaurants fill quickly during the Christmas season, especially on weekends and around major events.

Make reservations weeks in advance for upscale restaurants like Perry’s Steakhouse and Winewood Grill. Esparza’s does not take reservations, so expect waits during peak times. Arriving when restaurants open or later in the evening reduces wait times.

Overnight guests at Gaylord Texan receive priority access to dining reservations at resort restaurants. This perk proves valuable when on-site restaurants book solid during peak times.

Quick-service options and casual eateries generally accommodate walk-ins, though lunch and dinner rushes mean you might wait. Eating slightly off-peak hours gives you more flexibility.

SAFETY AND SECURITY TIPS

Large crowds during peak events require extra vigilance, especially with children.

Keeping Families Together

Establish meeting points if family members get separated. Historic Main Street landmarks like the Christmas tree or specific shops work well as gathering spots. Exchange cell phone numbers with older children who carry phones.

Younger children can wear identification bracelets with parent contact information. Taking photos of children at the start of each day helps identify what they are wearing if they become lost.

Protecting Belongings

Crowded events create opportunities for pickpockets. Keep wallets, phones, and valuables in front pockets or secure bags. Avoid leaving items unattended in strollers or on restaurant tables.

Hotel rooms provide safes for storing passports, extra cash, and valuable jewelry. Most attractions allow small bags but prohibit large backpacks in certain areas.

Weather-Related Safety

Check weather forecasts and dress appropriately. Sudden cold fronts can drop temperatures significantly. Layering allows adjustments as temperatures change throughout the day.

ICE! provides parkas, but guests should wear warm clothing underneath. Long pants and closed-toe shoes are required. The 9-degree temperature inside affects visitors differently, so know your cold tolerance.

After exploring everything Grapevine offers during Christmas, I believe this town represents what the holidays should truly feel like. The commitment to creating authentic experiences rather than commercialized attractions sets Grapevine apart from other Christmas destinations. From the friendly staff at every venue to the attention to detail in decorations, you can feel that this community genuinely loves Christmas. The designation as Christmas Capital of Texas is not just a title but an accurate description of a place that understands how to celebrate the season right.

Planning Your German Christmas Market Trip

Best Time to Visit: The first Sunday of Advent in 2025 is 30 November, and many Christmas markets start the Friday before the first Sunday of Advent – that is, on Friday 28 November in 2025. Germany’s Christmas markets usually start around November 20-25 or so, and the final date is almost always December 23, as Germans celebrate Christmas on December 24.

Getting Around:

 • Most German cities have excellent public transportation
 • Train travel between cities is efficient and scenic
 • Consider purchasing a German Rail Pass if visiting multiple cities
 • Make sure you have comfortable shoes that are well insulated and waterproof – it gets cold in Germany during December with cold streets and wet conditions

Money Matters: Always bring cash! While some stalls accept cards, many Christmas markets in Germany still primarily operate on cash transactions. Most glühwein stalls also require a deposit (pfand) for the collectible mugs.

Avoiding Crowds: Visit markets during weekday afternoons or early mornings for a more relaxed experience. Weekends and evenings tend to be the busiest times.

German Christmas Markets FAQs

What are the typical opening dates for German Christmas markets?

Most German Christmas markets open during the last week of November, typically around the first Sunday of Advent. They usually remain open through December 23rd or Christmas Eve, though some markets stay open until New Year’s Eve. It’s best to check specific market websites for exact dates as they can vary slightly each year.

Are German Christmas markets wheelchair accessible?

Most major German Christmas markets have made efforts to improve accessibility, with paved pathways between stalls and accessible restrooms. However, crowds can make navigation challenging, especially during peak evening hours and weekends. Visiting during weekday mornings typically offers the best accessibility experience.

Do vendors at German Christmas markets accept credit cards?

While larger markets in cities like Berlin and Frankfurt increasingly accept credit cards, many smaller vendors still operate on a cash-only basis. It’s highly recommended to carry euros in cash for your visit. Some markets have ATMs on-site, but they may have long queues during busy periods.

What is the significance of the Christmas market mugs?

When you purchase glühwein or other hot beverages, you pay a deposit (pfand) of €2-5 for the decorative mug. You can either return the mug for your deposit back or keep it as a souvenir, which many visitors do. Each market typically has its own unique mug design that changes annually, making them popular collectibles.

Are pets allowed at German Christmas markets?

Pet policies vary by market, but many German Christmas markets do allow dogs on leashes. However, the crowds, noise, and foot traffic can be stressful for animals. If you do bring your pet, consider visiting during quieter weekday hours and be prepared to keep them close and safe from dropped food items.

What time of day is best to visit German Christmas markets?

Weekday afternoons between 2-5 PM offer a pleasant balance of atmosphere without overwhelming crowds. Evening visits after 6 PM provide the most magical ambiance with full illumination, but expect larger crowds. Weekend mornings are ideal for families with children seeking a calmer experience.

Do I need to book accommodations far in advance for Christmas market visits?

Yes, hotels in cities with popular Christmas markets often book up months in advance, especially for weekends in December. Prices also increase significantly during the Christmas market season. Booking 3-6 months ahead is advisable for the best selection and rates, particularly for markets in Nuremberg, Dresden, and Cologne.

Are there vegetarian and vegan food options at German Christmas markets?

While traditional German Christmas market food is meat-heavy, most markets now offer vegetarian options like käsespätzle, roasted almonds, potato dishes, and mushroom-based foods. Vegan options are becoming more common in larger city markets, including plant-based bratwurst and dairy-free hot chocolate, though selection may still be limited.

Can you ship Christmas market purchases internationally?

Many vendors at German Christmas markets can arrange shipping for delicate items like glass ornaments and larger purchases, though it will be at an additional cost. Alternatively, major cities have post offices nearby where you can ship items yourself. Be sure to pack fragile items carefully, and note that some handcrafted wooden items may be restricted in certain countries.

What should I wear to stay comfortable at an outdoor Christmas market?

Layered clothing is essential since you’ll be outdoors but occasionally near heat sources and in crowded areas. Warm, waterproof boots with good traction are crucial as cobblestones can be slippery. Don’t forget a hat, scarf, and gloves, and consider hand warmers for especially cold days when temperatures can drop below freezing.

Conclusion
As we traverse the magical Christmas markets in Germany, from the historic charm of Aachen to the festive fervor of Stuttgart, it becomes evident that these markets are more than just shopping destinations. They are portals to a bygone era, where traditions, crafts, and culinary delights come together to create an enchanting celebration of the holiday season.

Whether it’s the oldest market in Dresden or the bustling streets of Frankfurt, each market adds its unique flavor to the tapestry of Germany’s winter wonderland, making it a must-visit destination for those seeking the true magic of Christmas.

Are you looking for an easy Christmas cookie recipe?

Look no further because these Rudolph’s Nose Christmas cookies are quick, easy, and delicious. They are my go-to when making Christmas cookies with my nieces.

My friend Stephanie brought these over during the holidays once and we all loved them. When I asked her for the recipe, I couldn’t believe how easy they were to make. I love cake box recipes because they are always easy recipes to make.

Rudolph’s Nose Christmas Cookies

Ingredients:

1 box (18.25 oz) Devil’s food cake mix

1/2 cup all-purpose flour

1/2 cup butter or margarine, melted

1 egg

Vanilla frosting (about 1/2 tub per batch)

Maraschino cherries (no stems)

Directions:

Mix the first four ingredients into a stiff dough. (Dough dries quickly and then is hard to roll–add a little oil to help with the dry-out factor, if needed.

Roll the dough into 1-inch balls. Press an indentation into a ball (with the round end of a wooden spoon or something like that).

Place 2 inches apart on a greased baking sheet. Bake at 350 degrees for 10-11 minutes. If dough is puffed, use the end of a wooden spoon to recreate indentation.

Cool for one minute. Remove from pan and continue to cool. Spread frosting into the indention (or apply with star-tipped pastry bag). Top with a cherry.

DIY Hot Chocolate Bar https://www.mommytravels.net/diy-hot-chocolate-bar/ https://www.mommytravels.net/diy-hot-chocolate-bar/#respond Mon, 08 Dec 2025 01:21:47 +0000 https://www.mommytravels.net/?p=53111 Create the ultimate DIY Hot Chocolate Bar for any party! From Christmas gatherings to unicorn-themed birthdays, discover easy setup tips, topping ideas, and fun ways to make your hot cocoa station unforgettable.

The post DIY Hot Chocolate Bar appeared first on Mommy Travels.

]]>
There are two types of people in this world: those who politely sip hot chocolate, and those who unapologetically load it with marshmallows until the cup resembles a sugary mountain. Whichever camp you’re in, a Hot Chocolate Bar is the ultimate party crowd-pleaser — warm, cozy, easy to set up, and undeniably Instagram-worthy.

I’ve created hot chocolate bars for everything from Christmas parties to my daughter Eden’s unicorn-themed birthday, and every single time, it’s a hit. Kids love it, adults flock to it, and you somehow become “that fun mom” without doing much more than opening some jars and plugging in a slow cooker. Let’s call that a win.

Why a Hot Chocolate Bar Works for Every Party

Hot chocolate
Hot Chocolate | Photo by Meagan Wristen
 • It’s budget-friendly. You don’t have to remortgage your house to provide a big setup. Most ingredients are inexpensive, and you probably already own half of them.
 • It works for all age groups. Kids go wild for toppings, and adults… also go wild for toppings. The universal truth of hot chocolate.
 • It doubles as decor. A colorful topping spread instantly makes your party look more intentional and curated than it probably is.
 • It’s customizable. Christmas? Add peppermint everything. Birthday party? Add rainbow sprinkles. Girls’ night? Add Baileys. The versatility is unmatched.

Step 1: Choose Your Hot Chocolate Base

Christmas Hot Chocolate

You’ve got options depending on your level of energy (and the level of judgment from your guests):

1. Slow Cooker Hot Chocolate

This is the MVP for parties because it stays warm and is self-serve. Use milk, cocoa, sugar, and a handful of chocolate chips. Mix, heat, stir occasionally. That’s it.

2. Pre-Made Hot Cocoa Packets

When you want the look of a Pinterest mom but not the emotional commitment. Mix with hot water or milk and pour into a dispenser.

3. White Hot Chocolate

A fun twist, especially for winter wonderland themes or unicorn birthdays. It also lets you play with colorful toppings, because who doesn’t want pink whipped cream?

Step 2: The Toppings — aka the Whole Point

Over the top Hot Chocolate

Toppings are where the Hot Chocolate Bar really shines. Stock a few pretty bowls or jars, add small scoops or spoons, and boom — festive chaos.

Essential Toppings

 • Chocolate syrup
 • Mini marshmallows
 • Whipped cream
 • Chocolate chips (white, milk, or dark)
 • Crushed candy canes or peppermints
 • Caramel drizzle
 • Sprinkles

Fun Extras

 • Peppermint sticks
 • Andes mints
 • Cinnamon sticks
 • Large marshmallows (for dramatic people)
 • Toffee bits
 • Sprinkles
 • Mini cookies (Oreos, Biscoff, graham crackers)
 • Pirouette wafers (for your extra-fancy guests)
 • Twizzlers
 • Fruity Pebbles
 • Cotton Candy
 • Mini donuts
 • Bark

Theme-Specific Ideas

Christmas:

 • Red and green sprinkles
 • Gingerbread cookie pieces
 • “Reindeer food” topping mix (oats + cinnamon sugar)

Unicorn Birthday Party:

Unicorn Hot Chocolate
Unicorn Hot Chocolate | Photo by Meagan Wristen
 • Rainbow marshmallows
 • Cotton candy (kids lose their minds over this)
 • Edible glitter
 • Pastel sprinkles
 • White hot chocolate dyed pink or purple

Adults-Only Gathering:

 • Baileys
 • Kahlua
 • Peppermint schnapps
 • Bourbon (for the bold)

I recommend keeping adult add-ins slightly separate so kids don’t accidentally turn the birthday party into a PG-13 event.

Step 3: Cups, Mugs & Presentation

If you want the hot chocolate bar to look like you spent hours on it (even if you didn’t), the key is how you present it.

 • Use matching mugs or cute disposable cups with lids.
 • Add little labels to jars and toppings.
 • Use a tray, cutting board, or tiered shelf to add height.
 • Throw in fairy lights or a garland for Christmas parties.
 • For unicorn themes, think iridescent, pastel, or sparkly décor.

Even a small hot chocolate bar feels special when the setup looks thoughtful.

Step 4: Keep It Warm (and Safe)

DIY Hot Chocolate Bar

Hot chocolate cools faster than your enthusiasm at a PTA meeting. Keep it warm with:

 • A slow cooker
 • An insulated beverage dispenser
 • A hot plate (on low) if you’re fancy

And remember: always place a small towel or tray underneath to catch spills. It keeps the area tidy and prevents the dreaded “sticky countertop incident.”

Final Thoughts: It’s Hot Chocolate, Not Rocket Science

The best part of creating a DIY Hot Chocolate Bar is that it’s almost impossible to mess up. Even when you think you’ve forgotten something, your guests will swear it’s the cutest thing they’ve ever seen. The warm chocolate does half the work — the toppings do the rest.

Whether it’s Christmas, a girls’ night, a birthday party, or your daughter’s unicorn extravaganza, a hot chocolate bar is guaranteed to make everyone feel cozy, festive, and slightly over-sugared. And honestly, isn’t that what parties are all about?

There’s something undeniably cozy about a dessert that brings peppermint, buttery goodness, and a little festive crunch together — and that’s exactly why Candy Cane Bars are stealing the show this holiday season. With a soft, buttery base and pops of crushed candy cane throughout, this treat isn’t just a dessert — it’s a holiday hug in bar form. Grab a mug of hot cocoa (or even a Strawberry Hot Cocoa from scratch for the kids and a Candy Cane Martini for yourself, dim the lights, and let these bars add a little extra holiday sparkle to your kitchen.

Whether you’re hosting a Christmas cookie swap or just want to sweeten an ordinary weeknight, these bars bring the perfect balance of simplicity and celebration. The peppermint frosting on top adds a cool, creamy layer, while the bits of crushed cane give each bite a festive crunch that’s impossible to resist. Here is my candy cane bars recipe with step-by-step instructions.

Making Memories, One Batch at a Time

It doesn’t matter if you’re an experienced baker or just starting out — these Candy Cane Bars are a sweet holiday win. The scent of peppermint and butter baking together will fill your kitchen with nostalgia, and the first bite — soft, buttery, pepperminty — might just become a new holiday tradition. I love imagining these bars on Christmas morning, alongside stockings and twinkling lights, or at a cozy get-together with friends and family.

So tie on your apron, preheat the oven, and let the holiday magic begin. Because sometimes, dessert isn’t just dessert — it’s a little bit of joy.

Planning a holiday trip to the Dallas–Fort Worth area and wondering if ICE! at the Gaylord Texan is worth it this year? The 2025–2026 ICE! attraction brings the story of Elf to life with more than two million pounds of hand-carved ice sculptures, frozen slides, and immersive holiday scenes inside a 9-degree winter wonderland. Whether you’re visiting with kids, planning a festive weekend getaway, or looking for the best Christmas activities in Texas, this guide breaks down everything you need to know — including this year’s dates, what’s new, what to expect inside, and tips for making the most of your visit.

Gaylord Texan ICE

Gaylord Texan ICE!

Every year from November until early January, the Gaylord Texan in Grapevine, Texas, has a Christmas event called ICE! During Ice, there are a variety of things you can do at the Gaylord. The most popular is walking through the massive ICE displays.

Gaylord Texan ICE

Ice Slides

Ice Slides at ICE! Gaylord Texan

Every year, the slides are one of the highlights. Kids will zip down 20 times. Adults will participate once and then offer to “hold the bags.”

One of the coolest “extras” at ICE! is the in-tent bar experience (called On the Blocks), designed specifically for guests 21 and older.

 • What it is: A small, exclusive bar inside the ICE! attraction where, for an additional upgrade, adults can enjoy a festive cocktail or beverage.
 • Who can do it: Only guests 21 and older, and you must already have an ICE! ticket — the “On the Blocks” drink-upgrade is a separate add-on you purchase before you enter ICE!.
 • Why it’s worth it: It offers a fun, festive break — a cozy spot to warm up (somewhat) and treat yourself while the kids rediscover the ice slides. Just be aware: the ice bar is still inside the same 9°F environment, so gloves + warm clothes are still a must even if you’re holding a holiday cocktail!

Nativity

Gaylord ICE

No matter what the theme is, each year the last ice room is always the same. A beautiful sculpture of an angel and the nativity scene. It’s always stunning.

Gaylord Texan ICE

Some of these pictures are from when we went in 2014. The theme that year was Frosty the Snowman. No matter what the theme is each year it always ends with a nativity scene. All of the Elf-themed photos are from 2025.

Cold Temperatures

Elf at ICE! Gaylord Texan
Elf at ICE! Gaylord Texan | Photo by Meagan Wristen

It is super cold in the ICE room (9 °F). They do give you heavy coats to put on to help protect you from the cold. You do not have to pay extra for these blue coats; they are included in the price of admission. Even with the extra coats, Jonah could barely stand to be in the room. We ended up rushing through after standing in line forever to walk through. He was seven at the time, so based on that I think your kid needs to be at least eight years old to withstand the cold. Your kids will need to wear gloves, hat, and a coat. If your kids have thermals, I would have them wear them.

We had to stand in line forever to get into the ICE! room. I recommend going at an off-peak time or buying a line pass. If you stay at the hotel, you get to bypass the regular line. I think this alone makes it worth staying at the hotel.

Gaylord ICE

The entire hotel is decorated inside and outside. Making for constant photo ops.

Parking

Gaylord Texan

It costs $25 to park in the self-parking lot, but at least the parking garage has a nice view of the front of the hotel. It’s a good spot for a photo opp of the hotel. It’s $45 to valet. During the ICE event, they sell pre-paid parking starting at $20. Prices seem to depend on how busy they will be each day.

ICE! and Snow Tubing Combo Pricing

When we went, we got the combined tickets for snow tubing and the ICE! room. I can’t remember what we paid, but we did get a military discount. When we went, you only got to tube a handful of times, but now you get to go unlimited times. That makes it worth getting the tubing option. Here are the current prices for the combo tickets.

Snow Tubbing at ICE! Gaylord Texan

Adult$44.32
Child (ages 4 – 12)$36.32
Child (ages 3 and Under)$18.99

Includes ICE! Ticket + unlimited Snow Tubing runs.

Height Restrictions

You must be at least: 42-inches tall to ride by yourself on a small tube. Riders taller than 52”/132cm MUST ride in a large tube. There is no weight limit for tubbing.

Other activities available during the Lone Star Christmas:

The Elf on the Shelf® Scavenger Hunt

Almost all packages include this scavenger hunt. We did this, and it took about 2.5 hours to find 10 hidden elves. My son was rewarded with a coloring book for finishing. Although we had a lot of fun doing the scavenger hunt, he hated the prize. Not sure what he thought he would win.

Santa’s Snowball Throwing Workshop

Cookies & Milk with Mrs. Claus

Gingerbread Decorating Corner (gingerbread man kit)

Glacier Glide Ice Skating

Ice Skating at ICE! Gaylord Texan

There’s a small ice rink at ICE and ice skates you can rent. Try to be the first out on the fresh ice for the best experience. The ice will get worse throughout the day.

Tips for Visiting ICE!

Elf at ICE! Gaylord Texan
Elf at ICE! Gaylord Texan | Photo by Meagan Wristen

1. Go early in the season or on weekdays.

Weekends can get packed. Like, “why did we do this to ourselves?” packed.

2. Buy tickets in advance.

Popular time slots sell out every year.

3. Keep your kids close in the tent.

It’s crowded and the combination of freezing cold and excited children is… chaotic.

4. Bring gloves for everyone.

Trust me — fingers freeze fastest.

5. Prepare for Texas-sized pricing.

Combo tickets for ICE! and other attractions vary year to year. Prices change often, so check the official Gaylord Texan Christmas website for current rates.

Is ICE! Worth It?

Absolutely — especially if you love holiday traditions, dazzling artistry, and the magic of seeing your kids lose their minds over sparkly frozen sculptures. It’s a once-a-year experience that brings the story of Elf to life in a way you’ll never see anywhere else.

Plus, you get to tell everyone you survived nine degrees in Texas.

Final Thoughts

ICE! at the Gaylord Texan remains one of the best — and most unique — holiday attractions in the Dallas–Fort Worth area. Whether you go for the nostalgia, the slides, the photos, or just to make your kids happy, it’s a festive, fun, and slightly chilly adventure the whole family will remember.

Do you need to use up your leftover turkey. Make this apple turkey soup with it! This is an easy crockpot recipe and super delicious.

Turkey apple soup crockpot recipe

Are you wondering what to do with all that leftover turkey?

I’ve tried many different ways to use up leftover turkey over the years. One year I used turkey instead in my spicy chicken spaghetti recipe and another year I used leftover turkey in my White Chicken Chili recipe

This year my suggestion is to make some soup in your crockpot with it. It’s easy to make and oh-so good. Plus, you will use up other food items leftover from Thanksgiving like gravy, apples, corn, carrots, and onions.

Leftover Turkey Soup – Crockpot Recipe

Ingredients:

2 C apple juice
1 can chicken stock
½ C diced peeled apples
1 can peas, drained and rinsed
1 can sliced carrots, drained and rinsed
1 can corn, drained and rinsed
½ Spanish onion, diced
1/ 2 jar of turkey gravy
2 tsp ginger
salt and pepper to taste
2 C cooked turkey, shredded
1 package Rotteli pasta
Olive oil spray

Bread bowls

Directions:

Spray your crockpot with olive oil spray. Add the apple juice and chicken stock to the crockpot. Turn the crockpot on medium heat and continue to add the ingredients (except the pasta). Stir the ingredients to blend the ingredients together. Heat for 5 hours. Add the pasta, stirring to mix well and cook for an additional hour. Before serving the soup, spoon it into each bread bowl.
