I essentially regretted my minivan almost immediately. Sure it’s super convenient but it’s not sexy. So, I surveyed 900+ moms to ask them what they decided to buy instead of a minivan. The results were narrowed down to give you lots of minivan alternatives.

Minivan Alternatives aka 3rd Row SUVs

Here’s what they either bought instead or traded from a minivan into.

Although many of the moms mentioned the Nissan Rogue, I only included vehicles with a third row or at least an optional third row. I figure if you need a car the size of a minivan it indicates you need more than five seats. All the cars on this list have 7 or 8 seats. These vehicle suggestions are in no particular order other than the first two minivan alternatives. The top two suggestions were each mentioned more than the others.

Honda Pilot
2025 Honda Pilot TrailSport

It’s unbelievably comfortable, the seats reconfigure easily. Plus, it’s loaded with a ton of features.

For moms with full hands, there is a hands-free power tailgate. It’s got all the tech most would want like a touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

The Pilot is powered by a 3.5-liter 280-horsepower V6 engine combined with a 6-speed automatic transmission and it is available in all-wheel-drive. Most importantly the Honda Sensing safety and driver-assistance features are standard on all trim levels and include a collision mitigation system with forward-collision warning, road departure mitigation, lane-keeping assist, and adaptive cruise control. Read our 2025 Honda Pilot TrailSport review.

Toyota Highlander
Tailgating with Toyota

The Toyota Highlander is well-appointed SUV. They have quite a few versions including a hybrid. Here’s a look at the XSE version.

Toyota 2021 Highlander XSE

Toyota 2021 Highlander XSE

  • 3.5L V6 engine; 8 speed automatic
  • Sport-tuned suspension and AWD dynamic torque vectoring
  • Bold styling with mesh front grill, twin-tip exhaust, and 20″ wheels, and 2-tone red and black seats.
  • 3-door smart key system with push-button start
  • Power liftgate
  • 8-inch touch screen with JBL speakers
  • Seating for 7; SofTex-Trimmed seats, heated power front seats • 3-zone climate control
  • Toyota Safety Sense (TSS 2.5+), a suite of active safety systems.

MSRP starting at: $43,355 MSR as Equipped: $46,526 MPG: city 20/hwy 27/ combine 23

Fun Fact: You can fit two kayaks on top of the Highlander.

Volvo XC 90
Volvo XC90

It was no surprise to me that the Volvo XC90 made the list. If I could afford it, this is the minivan alternative I would buy. I got to test it one year at the Texas Truck Rodeo and it was fabulous.

One mom said, “I feel so secure when my teens ask to take the car out after dark. It’s literally like a tank!”.

I like the way the seats are built they kind of hug your body. It seats 7, is AWD, and it’s a hybrid.

This is an expensive SUV and the starting price is $64,750 MSRP.

Volkswagen Atlas: Best Minivan Alternative if you need a lot of space
Volkswagen Atlas

The Volkswagen Atlas SUV is another one of my personal favorites. It has one of the most spacious third-rows available and can comfortably sit an adult. How do I know this? I was put back in the third row of an Atlas on a press trip once. I was irritated for a minute and then realized it was no big deal because of all of the space.

  • Base-Price Range: $32,575-$48,245
  • Available in a 3.6L V-6 (276 hp, 266 lb-ft)
  • Fuel Economy 16 city/ 23 hwy/ 21 combined
  • Max Towing Capacity: 5,000 pounds

Kia Sorento
Kia Sorento Hybrid

The Kia Sorrento is laid out well and the price is more reasonable than some of the others. We spent a week in this vehicle a few years ago and we enjoyed it thoroughly. It’s extremely comfortable and well-outfitted if you get the higher trim levels. These start out at $29,390 but the base model is too basic for almost everyone. You will definitely have to go up at least one trim level.

Subaru Ascent
2022 Subaru Ascent

The Subaru Ascent is the largest SUV Subaru makes so if you need that third row and want a Subaru, it’s this one. It only comes only in AWD which is handy.

The Ascent has comfortable seats, it’s good-looking, and you can get a Harman Kardon stereo in it.

It provides a smooth ride, yet precise handling. The third-row seat is tight.

  • Price Range: $33,345-$46,495
  • Engine: 2.4L turbo H-4 (260 hp, 277 lb-ft)
  • Fuel Economy: 20-21 city/26-27 hwy/22-23 combined mpg
  • Max Towing Capacity: 5,000 pounds

Mazda CX-9
Mazda CX-9

Mazda’s three-row SUV has been put onto the Top Safety Pick + list meaning it’s super safe. It is outfitted with Mazda’s i-ACTIVSENSE system which includes advanced smart city brake support with pedestrian detection, smart brake assist with collision warning, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, lane departure warning with lane-keeping assist, high-beam headlight assist, an adaptive front lighting system, and traffic-sign recognition.

One mom said it was, “Sporty and zippy with three rows of seating.”

  • Price Range: $35,335-$48,475
  • Engine: 2.5L turbo I-4 (250 hp, 320 lb-ft)
  • Fuel Economy: 20-22 city/26-28 hwy/23-24 combined mpg
  • Max Towing Capacity: 3,500 pounds

Hyundai Palisade
Hyundai Palisade

Hyundai is just knocking it out of the park lately and that includes the Palisade. It’s one of the more reasonably priced SUVs which makes it automatically a favorite among Moms. Both the second row and third row have optional captain chairs and are operated at the push of a button and fold flat. Check current Palisade options and prices.

  • Price Range: $33,710-$48,935
  • Engine: 3.8L V-6 (291 hp, 262 lb-ft)
  • Fuel Economy: 19 city/24-26 hwy/21-22 combined mpg
  • Max Towing Capacity: 5,000 pounds

Jeep Grand Cherokee L
Jeep Grand Cherokee L

One of the most popular SUVS of all time is the Jeep Grand Cherokee so it’s no surprise that so many moms recommended it now that it’s got a third-row option bumping it up to six seats. It’s got 4wd off-road capability in a nicer-looking package.

  • Prices start out at $36,995
  • Towing capacity is 6,200 lbs
  • 19 city and 26 highway MPG.

Nissan Pathfinder
Nissan Pathfinder

My own mother loved her Nissan so I was not surprised to see this one make the list. The Pathfinder is roomy and the second row was designed with some seat-folding tech that makes accessing the third row a little easier.

  • Price Range: $33,075-$46,400
  • Engins: 3.5L V-6 (284 hp, 259 lb-ft)
  • Fuel Economy: 19-20 city/26-27 hwy/21-23 combined mpg
  • Max Towing Capacity: 6,000 pounds

Ford Explorer
Ford Explorer

The Explorer is basically the best-selling SUV of all time. (Even I used to have one of these.) The new versions are built on an all-new rear-wheel-drive flexible architecture for an improved ride, handling, and capability. The standard engine is a 2.3-liter EcoBoost 4-cylinder unit producing 300 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque. Again if you get a new one there’s better safety on them, the Co-Pilot360. This includes automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, cross-traffic alert, lane-keeping assist, post-impact braking, and a rearview camera with a lens washer. The lens washer is a lifesaver when driving through dirty snow.

Moms love the push buttons for 2nd and 3rd row that bring them up or down. Plus, the 3rd row stows completely flat. When the 2nd row folds it is level with the 3rd row to make it all flat!

  • Price Range: $33,470-$55,725
  • Engines: 2.3L turbo I-4 (300 hp, 310 lb-ft); 3.0L turbo V-6 (365-400 hp, 380-415 lb-ft); 3.3L V-6 hybrid (318 hp, 332 lb-ft)
  • Fuel Economy: 16-27 city/23-28 hwy/19-27 combined mpg
  • Max Towing Capacity: 5,600 pounds

Kia Telluride
Kia Telluride

Kia Telluride is built in America and it has 3rd-row seats that go flat. The middle seats can be a bench or captain’s chairs. It’s a gorgeous car and very affordable. There’s been a waitlist to get one of these for a while now thanks to the value: tons of features versus the price.

Moms seem to really appreciate the Telluride price ($33,415-$43,715) and the features.

  • Engine: 3.8L V-6 (291 hp, 262 lb-ft)
  • Fuel Economy: 19-20 city/24-26 hwy/21-23 combined mpg
  • Max Towing Capacity: 5,000 pounds

Cadillac XT6: Best Bougie Minivan Alternative
Cadillac XT6 a luxury minivan alternative

One mom with teens said, “Never would have thought to be driving a Cadillac, but it has everything we need. Space for future college trips, plenty of room with a movable reclining second row. And USABLE with ample leg-room third row.”

The XT6 is a 3-row luxury SUV with the option of having captain’s chairs on the second row. It’s so safe it’s on the Top Safety Pick+ list. The XT6 has a distinct look thanks to its great big grille flanked and headlights of your choice. Safety features include forward collision alert, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, front, and rear park assist, rear cross-traffic alert, and a rearview camera with remote wash. The price starts out at $48,595.

GMC Acadia
GMC Acadia

The GMC Acadia is the luxury version of the Chevrolet Traverse, in that they both share GM’s C1 platform. It’s fairly spacious and great for hauling cargo thanks to the fold-flat second-row seats. It can go from zero to 60 mph in 7 seconds making it ideal for those moms with a lead foot. It has a 3rd-row option available.

  • Price Range: $34,800 – $49,495
  • Engines: 2.0L turbo I-4 (230 hp, 258 lb-ft); 2.5L I-4 (193 hp, 188 lb-ft); 3.6L V-6 (310 hp, 271 lb-ft)
  • Fuel Economy: 19-22 city/26-29 hwy/21-25 combined mpg
  • Max Towing Capacity: 4,000 pounds

Lincoln Navigator
Lincoln Navigator

Lincoln Navigator has an optional 30-way adjustable, massaging front seat which several moms highly recommended. Moms also love being able to use the phones as keys. The new models have more standard safety tech, a 20-speaker Revel audio system, and a powered 3rd now.

  • Price Range: $76,705 – $100,000
  • Engine: 3.5L twin-turbo V-6, 450 hp, 510 lb-ft
  • Fuel Economy: 16 city/20-22 hwy/17-18 combined mpg
  • Max Towing Capacity: 8,700 lb

Ford Expedition
Ford Expedition

I almost didn’t include this one because it’s what my ex drives and he is a douche bag, but since most people that drive them are not, here ya go! Many moms recommended the Ford Expedition and these are the reasons why. The third row is easy to deal with thanks to a power push button. It has a remote start, a massive sunroof, removable seats, and lots of extra space.

Ford Expedition has a powerful twin-turbo EcoBoost V-6 and an easy-to-use infotainment interface.

  • Prices start at $49,625
  • Towing capacity of 5,900 to 6,000 lbs

Acura MDX
Acura MDX

The Acura MDX starts out at $47,200 and as a 3rd row. It can seat six and if needed seat seven, all the rows go flat as well. It has a large back area for those that need a lot of space. It has a V6 engine and gets decent gas mileage, 19 city / 26 highway.

Dodge Durango: Best Minivan Alternative if You’d Rather be in a Sports Car
2019 Dodge Durango SRT

The Dodge Durango is a fantastic choice if you want a powerful SUV. It comes in several trim levels including two with intense power. The middle row is your choice of a bench or captain chairs. I recommend getting the captain chairs.

I recently got time in the new 2021 Hellcat version. Here it is:

2021 Dodge Durango SRT Hellcat

The 2021 Durango SRT Hellcat

  • The Durango SRT Hellcat features the supercharged 6.2-liter HEMI® V-8 with 710 horsepower and 645 lb.-ft. of torque.
  • 0-60 mph in 3.5 seconds
  • NHRA-certified quarter-mile time of 11.5 seconds • Top speed of 180 mph
  • 2021 Durango has an updated aggressive exterior, new front fascia, LED low/high headlamps, signature LED daytime running lamps (DRL), grille, and rear spoiler.
  • Performance-inspired interior features a new driver-oriented cockpit, including a new instrument panel, wrapped and accent-stitched mid bolster and console, upgraded door panels, and the all-new five-times-faster Uconnect 5, with the largest-in-class 10.1-inch touchscreen.
  • MPG: 12 city/17 hwy/13 combine

Fun Fact: No SUV in the world can tow more or carry more with a faster quarter-mile time than the Durango SRT Hellcat.

Volkswagen Tiguan
19 Minivan Alternatives

MSRP starting at: $80,995 –  MSR as pictured: $90,315. The other versions are much, much cheaper. This is the most expensive one they make.

Volkswagen Tiguan

The newer Volkswagen Tiguans have a FWD version with a 3rd row. This is perfect for families that occasionally need a third row. The 3rd row is tight and basically just for kids, but it’s better than not having one when you need one!

  • 23 mpg in city driving, 30 mpg on the highway -great lumbar support
  • Touchscreen with Apple CarPlay® & Android Auto™
  • 8” digital cockpit where you can see car status, navigation, driving data, phone information, driver assistance features, and more.

Minivan Alternatives FAQs

What is the most affordable 3-row SUV alternative to a minivan?

The Volkswagen Tiguan is the most budget-friendly option with a starting price around $26,000. It offers a third row that works well for occasional use, especially for children. The Kia Sorento is another excellent value starting at $29,390, offering more standard features and a more spacious third row for slightly more money.

Which minivan alternative has the most spacious third row for adults?

The Volkswagen Atlas is renowned for having one of the most spacious third rows among midsize SUVs, comfortably accommodating adults even on longer trips. The Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator also offer exceptionally roomy third rows since they are full-size SUVs, but they come with a higher price tag and larger overall footprint.

Are there any hybrid or electric options among these minivan alternatives?

Yes, several models offer hybrid powertrains including the Toyota Highlander Hybrid, Volvo XC90 Hybrid, Ford Explorer Hybrid, and Kia Sorento Hybrid. The Kia Sorento Hybrid delivers impressive fuel economy with 37 combined MPG. These hybrid options provide better fuel efficiency while maintaining the space and utility families need, though they typically cost more upfront than their gas-only counterparts.

Which 3-row SUV is best for families who need serious towing capacity?

The Ford Expedition leads the pack with up to 9,300 pounds of towing capacity, making it ideal for hauling boats, campers, or large trailers. The Lincoln Navigator and Dodge Durango also excel with 8,700-pound capacities each. If you need substantial towing but want to stay under $40,000, the Dodge Durango base models offer exceptional value.

How does third-row access compare between these SUVs and minivans?

While minivans still reign supreme for third-row access with sliding doors, many modern SUVs have significantly improved. Models like the Ford Explorer and Hyundai Palisade feature power-folding second-row seats activated by push buttons. The Nissan Pathfinder has innovative seat-folding technology that makes third-row access easier. Captain’s chairs in the second row, available in most of these SUVs, also create a center aisle for easier access compared to bench seats.

Which luxury minivan alternative offers the best value for the money?

The Kia Telluride and Hyundai Palisade consistently rank as the best value luxury alternatives, offering premium features, materials, and technology at prices starting around $33,000 to $34,000. Both have earned numerous awards for delivering near-luxury experiences at mainstream prices. They include standard features that cost thousands more in competing vehicles and come with excellent warranties.

What safety features should I look for when choosing a minivan alternative?

Look for SUVs with comprehensive driver-assistance suites like Honda Sensing, Toyota Safety Sense, or Ford Co-Pilot360. Key features include automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and lane-keeping assist. The Mazda CX-9, Cadillac XT6, and Volvo XC90 have earned Top Safety Pick+ ratings from the IIHS, representing the highest safety standards.

Can I fit three car seats across the second row in these SUVs?

This varies by model, but generally, it’s challenging to fit three car seats across in most midsize SUVs. The Volkswagen Atlas, Subaru Ascent, and Ford Expedition have wider second rows that better accommodate three-across seating. If you need to install three car seats, consider models with captain’s chairs in the second row and a third row that can accommodate a car seat, or opt for vehicles specifically designed with wider bench seats.

Which minivan alternative is best for off-road or winter driving?

The Jeep Grand Cherokee L offers the best off-road capability with its legendary 4WD system and trail-rated options. The Subaru Ascent comes standard with all-wheel drive and Subaru’s renowned AWD technology, making it excellent for winter conditions. The Volvo XC90 also provides confident all-weather driving with its AWD system and advanced traction control, plus it feels especially stable and secure in challenging conditions.

How does cargo space in these SUVs compare to minivans?

Most minivans still offer more total cargo volume than midsize SUVs, especially behind the first row. However, full-size SUVs like the Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator provide comparable or even greater cargo space. The key difference is configuration flexibility—minivans typically have Stow ‘n Go seating or completely removable seats, while SUVs usually have folding seats that don’t quite create the same flat floor. The Volkswagen Atlas and Hyundai Palisade offer some of the best cargo space among midsize SUVs with flat-folding seats.

So there you have it, all our favorite minivan alternatives. Have you bought an SUV instead of a minivan? If so tell us what you bought and why in the comments below.

If trucks had personality types, the 2025 Nissan Frontier PRO-4X would be the bold, outdoorsy one who shows up early, stays late, and still looks great covered in mud. With a fresh new look, smarter tech, and enough muscle to tow your whole weekend, this truck isn’t just for show—it’s built to work, play, and then some.

Whether you’re navigating rocky backroads or navigating the chaos of graduation week (hi, yes, that was me), the Frontier PRO-4X handles it all without a single complaint. It’s rugged where it counts, refined where it matters, and fully prepared for everything from off-roading adventures to last-minute landscaping emergencies.

Rugged Redesign: Looks That Mean Business

The 2025 Frontier PRO-4X is not your basic facelift. Nissan went all in, giving the Frontier a bold new front fascia, redesigned grille, and a more aggressive bumper that says, “Yes, I can scale a mountain and haul sod for a backyard graduation party—ask me how.”

And let’s talk about that Afterburn Orange paint job. It’s not just unmissable—it’s a statement. It’s the kind of color that turns heads at stoplights and practically begs to be photographed at golden hour. The new PRO-4X wheels round out the “tough but stylish” look, proving that this truck isn’t afraid to get dirty and look good doing it.

Enhanced Off-Road Confidence: See What’s Coming

2025 Nissan Frontier PRO-4X Intelligent Around View® Monitor

One of the standout upgrades is the Intelligent Around View® Monitor with Enhanced Off-Road View. Unlike your average backup camera, this system works at higher speeds, so you can see everything around you while you’re actually moving through rugged terrain—not just inching out of a parking spot at Target.

Whether you’re crawling rocks or just trying not to run over the sprinkler system while parking in your yard (don’t ask), this feature boosts your confidence and visibility, making every maneuver smoother and smarter.

Six-Foot Bed: Size Matters

Photos by MommyTravels.net

Here’s where practicality meets possibility. The 2025 Frontier now offers a long-wheelbase configuration with a 6-foot bed across the lineup. That means more room for the important stuff—like hauling half a pallet sod for that last-minute landscaping project you swore you had a month to finish. (Again, don’t ask.)

From camping gear to power tools to a cooler the size of a small bathtub, this truck gives you the space to take it all with you—no truck bed Jenga required.

Towing Power That Pulls Ahead

With a maximum tow rating of 7,150 pounds, the 2025 Frontier PRO-4X doesn’t just walk the walk—it tows the trailer, the boat, and probably your buddy’s sad excuse for a lawnmower if needed.

Powered by a 3.8L V6 engine pushing 310 horsepower, this truck was built to haul without hesitation. Whether you’re heading to the lake, the worksite, or just flexing on the freeway, this powertrain feels capable, responsive, and—most importantly—fun to drive.

Technology: Smarter, Not Flashier

2025 Nissan Frontier PRO-4X 12.3-inch touchscreen (1)

Just because this truck can climb a hill doesn’t mean it skimps on tech. Nissan packed the 2025 Frontier PRO-4X with smart, user-friendly features—like a massive 12.3-inch touchscreen that finally makes sense for human fingers (no stylus or squinting required).

Add in wireless Android Auto™ and Apple CarPlay, and you’ve got seamless connectivity without the cord clutter. Stream your road trip playlist, get directions, or take hands-free calls while you conquer the backroads—or just your local traffic jam.

Much to my surprise I got a weather alert right on the screen. I thought that was a great feature considering how bad the weather in Dallas can quickly get.

Comfort That Works as Hard as You Do

Off-road-ready doesn’t have to mean off-your-back uncomfortable. Nissan added thoughtful upgrades like a telescopic steering wheel and two-way power lumbar support (standard on SV trims and above) to keep you comfy, even after a full day of hauling, towing, or chasing kids around the backyard.

Because if you’re going to spend hours behind the wheel—whether you’re trail-bound or Target-bound—you deserve a seat that supports your spine and your lifestyle.

Real-Life Test: Graduation Week Warrior

2025 Nissan Frontier PRO-4X running errands (1)

During Jonah’s graduation week (read: the busiest week of the year), I put the 2025 Nissan Frontier PRO-4X to work. Between hauling fresh sod to fix up the backyard before the party, running errands, and preparing for a house full of guests, this truck handled it all—without breaking a sweat.

It wasn’t just a workhorse—it was the MVP. And while I didn’t get a chance to boulder-hop (unless you count the rogue landscaping rocks), the Intelligent Around View® Monitor definitely saved my fence from an unfortunate encounter.

Who’s the 2025 Nissan Frontier PRO-4X For?

2025-Nissan-Frontier-PRO-4X-back-row

This is the truck for people who want capability without compromise. If you love the idea of weekend adventures but still need a dependable ride for daily life, this one checks all the boxes. It’s great for off-roaders, DIYers, campers, parents, and anyone who appreciates a ride that works hard and looks good.

So whether you’re hauling tools, toys, or the entire extended family’s folding chairs, the 2025 Nissan Frontier PRO-4X is built to handle it—with confidence, comfort, and a splash of Afterburn Orange flair.

Disclosure: Nissan provided the Frontier PRO-4X for review purposes. All opinions (and sod-hauling adventures) are my own.

If you’re into rugged off-roading with a bit of grit, the new 2024 INEOS Grenadier Quartermaster is worth a look. At this year’s Texas Truck Rodeo, I got a chance to drive this double cab pickup—essentially the Grenadier’s brawny sibling with added cargo space. Here’s how it stacks up.

Engine Power That Doesn’t Hold Back

Under the hood, the Quartermaster packs a BMW 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six engine, paired with a smooth eight-speed ZF automatic transmission. It’s quick on the uptake, offering a refined ride that’s not afraid to show off its muscle with 282 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque. Whether you’re towing up to 7,716 pounds or loading up with a payload capacity of 1,675 pounds, this pickup is designed to handle serious weight without blinking.

Off-Road Capabilities Designed for Real Adventure

When it comes to off-roading, the Quartermaster goes above and beyond. With a 10.3-inch ground clearance, you can take it confidently over rocky terrain and trails without worrying about scraping bottom. Plus, it boasts an impressive approach and departure angle of 36.2 degrees, along with a breakover angle of 26.2 degrees, making it as agile as it is rugged.

One of my favorite features? The Quartermaster’s wading depth of 31.5 inches. Whether you’re splashing through water or navigating tricky landscapes, this pickup doesn’t hesitate to dive in.

Cargo Versatility That Means Business

What sets the Quartermaster apart from the original Grenadier is its expanded cargo space. This model is all about versatility, giving you the room to throw in more than just gear. It’s built to adapt, whether you’re loading up with heavy-duty tools, outdoor equipment, or just getting creative with your packing for that weekend adventure.

Interior Design That Keeps Things Simple

Inside, the Quartermaster combines utility with straightforward comfort. The layout is functional, with controls that are easy to reach and intuitive to use, making it clear that this vehicle is built for action. The front-row seats are Recaro and they are supportive without being over-the-top cushy, keeping you comfortable during longer drives or bumpy rides. But the second row is a bit tight. For family outings, the backseat may be better suited to the gear you didn’t have room for in the cargo bed or children ages 12 and under.

Pricing: Is It Worth It?

Off-roading the 2024 INEOS Grenadier Quartermaster

With a starting price of around $80,000, the 2024 INEOS Grenadier Quartermaster isn’t cheap, but considering the performance and capabilities it offers, you’re getting plenty of value. You’re paying for a vehicle that’s built to handle some of the toughest terrains with ease. And, while this price tag puts it up against some serious off-roaders, it’s designed to make its mark with a unique set of features, from its engine power to its practical cargo space.

Why So Many Buttons?

A defining feature of the Quartermaster’s interior is the sheer number of buttons. While it might seem overwhelming (my first reaction upon seeing them was WTH), these are built with functionality in mind. Each button has a purpose, designed to give drivers direct access to critical features, especially while off-roading. Instead of navigating through a digital interface, you get quick access to functions like locking differentials, wading settings, and more. It’s built for simplicity and efficiency, even when you’re navigating rocky paths or adjusting settings on the fly.

Unique Features

Quirky additions like the “Toot” button offer a softer honk for alerting pedestrians or wildlife gently—perfect for off-road settings. The interior includes safari windows instead of a sunroof, which don’t have shades, but can be fully removed to offer panoramic views and they are tinted.

Steering

2024 INEOS Grenadier Quartermaster dashboard

The Quartermaster’s steering is, well, “deliberate.” In other words, it’s not the snappy, auto-correcting steering you get in most new SUVs. The steering wheel doesn’t exactly “self-center” after a turn, which means it feels almost numb when you’re on regular roads. The steering might catch you off guard at first if you’re used to quick-response handling, but this design is perfect for when you need stable control off-road, especially in tough terrain where constant feedback isn’t exactly a friend. So, while you might feel like you’re driving a tank around town, it’s precisely this build that makes the Quartermaster an absolute beast in rugged conditions

Drive Feel

driving the 2024 INEOS Grenadier Quartermaster

When it comes to on-road comfort, the Quartermaster stays true to its hardcore 4×4 roots. Its solid-axle suspension translates to a more traditional, bumpy ride. And while that’s a major asset on trails, it won’t be mistaken for a cushy highway cruiser. So yes, the Quartermaster shines off-road, but don’t be surprised if it feels like it’s more at home bouncing over rocks than cruising around town

Verdict: Ready for Just About Anything

If you’re looking for a pickup that merges tough performance with practicality, the INEOS Grenadier Quartermaster won’t disappoint. It’s built to handle the demands of both the road and the trail, with a design that says, “Bring it on.”

As a seasoned road-tripper with a penchant for both automotive know-how and dragging my three teenage accomplices across continents, I’ve seen the good, the bad, and the cramped when it comes to vehicles suited for family adventures. Here’s my no-nonsense guide to the best cars for your next family road trip.

The Ultimate Road Trip Warriors: Top Cars for the Family Adventurer

1. Honda Odyssey – The Family Fortress on Wheels

Eden flying a kite in Gearhart Beach
Eden flying a kite in Gearhart Beach with our Odyssey behind her. She’s 20 now!

I have owned a Honda Odyssey for 17.5 years. Yes, you read that correctly. When I was pregnant with Jonah, my 3rd child, I ended swapping my Ford Explorer out for a minivan. It’s so convenient when I need it that I’ve just kept it. It’s got 245,000 miles on it and it is still going strong. That’s why I am kicking the list off with it.

  • Space Galore: Enough room to keep the peace among warring siblings, with seating for up to 8 and generous legroom.
  • Magic Slide Seats: Because apparently, kids can’t sit next to each other for more than five minutes without an international incident.
  • Rear Entertainment System: For those “Are we there yet?” moments, which start approximately 10 minutes into any drive.
  • Built-in Vacuum: For all the snacks that will inevitably end up everywhere but their mouths. (Mine is so old that I don’t have this feature, but all the newer ones do.)

2. Subaru Outback – The Adventurer’s Dream

Subaru Outback 2023 (1)
2023 Subaru Outback
  • All-Wheel Drive: For when the road less traveled isn’t actually a road. (I know because I may have off-roaded my brother-in-law’s Outback while he was out of town. Turns out it has plenty of power. Don’t tell him!)
  • EyeSight Driver Assist Technology: Because herding kids is enough work without worrying about the other drivers.
  • Spacious Cargo Area: Fits enough luggage to satisfy even the most overprepared parent (yes, including the kitchen sink).
  • X-Mode with Hill Descent Control: For navigating those mountain passes like a boss.

3. Toyota Sienna – The Cool Parent’s ChoiceToyota Sienna Minivan

  • All-Wheel Drive Option: For families who don’t let a little weather ruin their plans.
  • Flexible Seating for Up to 8: And by “flexible”, I mean you can practically do yoga with how those seats move around.
  • Dual Power Sliding Doors: Because asking kids to close the door softly is a lost cause.
  • Kick-Activated Sliding Doors and Liftgate: For when your hands are full (so, always).

4. Ford Expedition – The Road BehemothFord Expedition is massive a great minivan alternative

  • EcoBoost Engine: Who said a beast can’t be gentle on the fuel?
  • Seating for 8 with Room to Spare: You can literally separate the kids by an entire row. Peace at last.
  • Advanced Towing Capabilities: For those who can’t leave home without their second home.
  • Panoramic Vista Roof: Because sometimes the best part of the trip is looking up.

5. Volkswagen Atlas – The Euro Chic Wanderer

Volkswagen Atlas
We’ve taken multiple trips in the Volkswagen Atlas because it is just so roomy. The most recent road trip we did in this was to Bend, Oregon.
  • Three Rows of Adult-Sized Seating: Because teens magically grow 6 inches overnight.
  • Digital Cockpit: Keep track of all your important info while the kids argue over whose playlist is better.
  • Ample Cargo Space: Fits everything from suitcases to sports equipment to the inevitable souvenir collection.
  • Adaptive Cruise Control: For when you need to rest your foot but not your vigilance.
  • High-end Features: Ventilated Front Seats, heated steering wheel, and IQ.Drive assistance.

6. Chevrolet Suburban – The Road Trip Behemoth

2025 Chevrolet Suburban
2025 Chevrolet Suburban
  • Enormous Cargo Space: Because packing light is for amateurs.
  • Seating for 9: Finally, a car that fits your family and the dog. Or two.
  • Rear Seat Media System: Because peace is priceless.
  • Advanced Safety Features: Keeps your most precious cargo safe.

7. Kia Telluride – The Underdog Turned MVP

2023 Kia Telluride

  • Spacious Seating for 8: With room left for the family pet to stretch out.
  • Driver Talk: Broadcast your voice to backseat occupants, because why yell?
  • Quiet Mode: Front audio plays only in the front, for when the backseat passengers finally nap.
  • Smart Power Liftgate: For hands that are always full.
  • Wi-fi Hotspot: Compatible with iPhone, Apple Watch, and Samsung Galaxy smartphones.

8. Chrysler Pacifica – The High-Tech HavenTake a Pacifica mini van down Howland hill road in the Redwood National Forest

The kids and I took this hybrid minivan on a super long trip through Oregon and down into the Redwood National Park in California. Despite the long journey, it was a comfortable ride for the entire family.

  • Stow ‘n Go Seating: Because sometimes you need more cargo space than seating.
  • Uconnect Theater: Dual 10-inch HD touchscreens with built-in games and apps.
  • Advanced SafetyTec Group: Because your family’s safety isn’t optional.
  • Plug-In Hybrid Option: For the eco-conscious family.

9. Tesla Model X – The Electric ExplorerTesla Model X

  • All-Electric Range: Long enough to forget gas stations exist.
  • Falcon Wing Doors: For easy loading in tight spaces, and because they’re cool.
  • Autopilot: For when the driver deserves a break too.
  • Spacious Interior: Comfortably seats 7 with room for luggage.

10. Volvo XC90 – The Scandinavian SanctuaryVolvo XC90

  • Luxurious Interior: Because comfort is key on long drives.
  • Pilot Assist: Semi-autonomous driving because even parents need a co-pilot.
  • Integrated Booster Seats: For the little ones growing up too fast.
  • Large Cargo Capacity: For all of life’s essentials, and then some.
  • Top-Notch Safety Features: So you can focus on the journey, not the hazards.

11. Honda Pilot – The Dependable Workhorse

  • Massive Interior: With seating for up to 9.
  • Advanced Safety Features: Keeping everyone safe is a top priority.
  • Rear-Seat Entertainment: With dual screens and Wi-Fi.
  • Powerful Engine Options: Because mountains shouldn’t slow you down.

14. Audi Q7 – The High-Tech Highway Star

  • Luxury Seating for 7: So everyone gets a window seat (or close enough). With leather and comfort that spoil you.
  • Virtual Cockpit: For navigation and entertainment at your fingertips.
  • Generous Cargo Space: Plus, electric folding seats for easy configuration.
  • Quattro All-Wheel Drive: For when the weather turns as quickly as your teen’s moods.

  • Three Rows of Sumptuous Seating: Travel in first-class comfort, with room for the extended family or an entire soccer team’s worth of kids.
  • E-ACTIVE BODY CONTROL: Glide over bumps and dips as if you’re floating on air, ensuring even the most motion-sensitive passenger enjoys the ride.
  • MBUX Infotainment System: A user-friendly interface that responds to natural voice commands, because sometimes you need to keep your eyes on the road and hands on the wheel, especially with a carload of distractions.
  • Panoramic Sunroof: Offers a sky view for passengers, turning every drive into a scenic journey, and perhaps providing a peaceful distraction from backseat quarrels.
  • Heated and Ventilated Seats: Keep everyone comfortable, no matter the season. Because the war over the thermostat doesn’t need to extend to the vehicle.
  • Ample Cargo Space: With easy-fold rear seats, there’s plenty of room for luggage, sports equipment, and the occasional large, impulsive purchase from roadside attractions.
  • Driver Assistance Package: Offers peace of mind with features like active brake assist and blind-spot assist, because safeguarding precious cargo is always a priority.
  • Impressive Towing Capacity: For those who believe a luxury getaway still can include boats or trailers, proving once and for all that elegance and utility can coexist beautifully.

  • Generous Interior Space: Enough room to avoid accidental elbow jabs (and the ensuing arguments).
  • Infotainment System with Wi-Fi: Keep the digital natives in their natural habitat – online.
  • Multiple USB Ports: So everyone’s device is charged and no one’s bored.

18. Kia Sorento – The Underestimated Challenger

  • Three Rows in a Compact Frame: Because you need to park this beast eventually.
  • All-Wheel Drive Capability: For when “off the beaten path” is taken literally.
  • User-Friendly Infotainment System: Because no one has time for a complicated relationship with their car’s interface.
  • Surprisingly Affordable Luxury: Who said opulence had to empty your wallet?
  • Advanced Driver Assistance Systems: Blind spot colllision-avoidance, Rear cross traffic collision avoidance, and safe exit assist.

19. Dodge Durango – The Muscle Mover

  • Powerful Engine Options: Because a little grunt work never hurt.
  • Three Rows of Seating: Space for everyone, even the family dog.
  • Uconnect Infotainment: Keeping everyone connected and entertained.
  • Towing Capability: For families that bring their adventures with them.

20. Mazda CX-9 – The Stylish Roadster

  • Turbocharged Engine: Who said a family car can’t have a little zoom-zoom?
  • Sophisticated Interior: Feel like you’re in a luxury vehicle (even with a car full of kids).
  • Advanced Safety Features: Mazda’s got your back, side, and front.
  • Sport Mode: For when you need a little extra fun on the freeway.

21. Nissan Pathfinder – The Path Pioneer

  • Four-Wheel Drive: Take the road less traveled, with confidence.
  • EZ FLEX Seating System: Because getting to the third row shouldn’t require gymnastics.
  • Tri-Zone Entertainment System: Everyone gets their own screen. Silence is golden.
  • Motion Activated Liftgate: For when your hands are full of snacks, souvenirs, or sleepy toddlers.
  • Towing Capacity: Depending on which model you get, you can tow up to 6,000 lbs.

Before you set off on your next epic journey, remember that the best vehicle for your family is one that fits your specific needs, budget, and style. Whether you’re navigating city streets or exploring rugged terrain, there’s a road trip champion out there for you. Just make sure it has enough cup holders – trust me on this one. Happy travels!

Get Travel Insurance

Unfortunately, there are a lot of things that can go wrong on any trip. Be prepared for the worst with travel insurance. We use Travelex or Safety Wing (often cheaper).

Book Flights

I use Skyscanner to find flights. I use it so much, I wrote an entire guide to finding cheap flights with Skyscanner! Another option for finding deals is FlightHub.

Book a Place to Stay

I recommend using Expedia.com or Hotels.com for most hotel bookings. I prefer to book directly with Marriott when I stay there because of their excellent military discount.

If you prefer staying in a vacation rental instead, I recommend VRBO. If you are looking for a hostel, I use HostelWorld.

Choose Activities and Tours

To find great activities in any area I use Viator. If we are visiting a city with lots of popular attractions I always check CityPass, PogoPass, and GoCard to see if they have discount cards available. Groupon also tends to have a lot of local travel deals.

Disclosure: This post contains affiliate links. Also, I was gifted a trip to Vietnam to drive the VF8. I received no compensation but I did get to stay in a few cool hotels which I share below.

With the launch of its first car in 2019, Vinfast has become an up-and-coming player in the automotive industry in record time. They are only four years old and in 21 months they launched three cars. Now, this Vietnam-based company has gained global recognition for their electric SUVs, the Vinfast VF8 and VF9. I had the privilege of going to Vietnam and seeing the Vietnamese car maker in person. They are bringing both of their electric SUVs to market in the United States soon and I got the chance to drive the VF8 for 45 minutes. Let’s take a look at these two vehicles and see if they are worth all the hype.

Vinfast VF9 – A 3-Row Electric SUV OptionVF9

The Vinfast VF9 is an AWD 3rd-row SUV that features a sleek design and quality construction. The interior appears to be spacious and comfortable, with plenty of legroom for passengers and an adjustable driver’s seat. It also features ample cargo space with an extra storage area on the back side of the vehicle. Underneath, it has an all-wheel drivetrain that helps give it off-road capabilities as well as improved traction in inclement weather.

The car also comes equipped with advanced safety features such as blind spot detection, lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, and automatic emergency braking. It also boasts impressive performance numbers with its 2.5 liter turbocharged engine capable of outputting 200 horsepower and 350 Nm of torque. On top of this, it can get up to 50 miles per gallon as well as having one of the quietest rides on any SUV out there today due to its soundproofing technology.VF9 by Vinfast

The VF9 comes with a bigger battery that is built to last 8 – 10 years. If the battery doesn’t last that long, Vinfast will put in a new one. Due to supply chain shortages during the pandemic, Vinfast ended up building its own batteries. The battery comes with a 10-year, 125,000 miles warranty.

Full disclosure: I did not drive the VF9 while I was in Vietnam. I wasn’t even allowed inside of it. This is all information that was provided to me by Vinfast. This picture of it was as close as I got to it.

Vinfast VF8 – A Spacious Electric AlternativeInside the VF8

The Vinfast VF8 is a great choice for those looking for a more spacious electric SUV without sacrificing quality or performance. This model features an exterior design that stands out from other cars on the market while still being understated enough to not draw too much attention when you’re out driving around town. Inside you’ll find plenty of space for passengers along with plenty of cargo room too, thanks to its split rear seats which fold down when you need more room in the trunk. I was extremely surprised at how large the second row was. I think you could get three car sets in it.

Vinfast VF8 Trunk

Underneath it has a 1.6 liter turbocharged engine capable of producing 155 horsepower and 250 Nm of torque while still getting up to 40 miles per gallon fuel economy ratings–making it one of the most efficient cars on the market today when it is fully charged! In order to get full acceleration the SUV has to be charged above 80%. Under 80% charge and you will not get peak power.

It also comes equipped with advanced safety features such as blind spot detection, lane departure warning systems, forward collision warning systems, adaptive cruise control, and automatic emergency braking which are designed to help keep you safe on your travels around town or down highways alike! There are 11 airbags in the VF8.Vinfast VF8 Second Row

I did get to drive this vehicle for just under an hour, but I drove the Vietnamese version of the car, not the American version. I was able to speak to one of the engineers and he shared the following difference you can expect. The American version will have more stability and foam is being added to the tires to achieve less road noise. It will also have one-pedal driving, so when you let off the gas pedal the car slows down, eventually coming to a complete stop. They are also planning to add regenerative braking at some point.

I could never quite figure out how much this SUV was going to cost. I was told three different numbers, but until there’s an American version on the ground for sale we won’t know. One of the numbers I heard was just over 70K but there’s no way, cause it’s not that kind of quality.

Vinfast Factory

North American Manufacturing is Coming!

Not only are they bringing their electric SUVs to America, but they are also building a manufacturing facility in North Carolina. The first phase will be the vehicle manufacturing plant and the second will be a battery pack manufacturing facility. Due to the pandemic causing chain supply issues, Vinfast ended up making its own batteries. At this point, they make all aspects of the vehicles including everything from the electronics to the plastic!

Vietnam

While I was in Vietnam they took us to experience the extreme uniqueness of the country. And yes, I considered much of what I saw and ate to be much different from other cultures I have been lucky enough to experience. The food was mainly seafood which was a little tough for me since I am allergic to a lot of it. A lot of the seafood they have is not something I’ve ever had before, so since I wasn’t sure what I could eat without issues I basically went borderline vegetarian. Vinfast was very accommodating. I got these baskets of food at each meal which were adorable and tasty. Non-seafood option in Vietnam

One of the highlights for me personally was the resorts and hotels we stayed at. It seemed like every time we changed hotels it just kept getting better in various ways.

Vin Pearl Ha LongVin Pearl Ha Long

The first resort I stayed at was the Vin Pearl Ha Long, situated on its own little island in the world-renowned Ha Long Bay. The views from my patio were incredible. I could see a ton of rock islands not far away. Based on photos I had seen of Ha Long Bay, I assumed you had to venture way out to see them, kind of like you have to do in Thailand in places. I was completely wrong. It’s easy to see from the mainland an extremely short boat ride. Here are the best Halong Bay cruises

Sofitel Legend Metropole HanoiSofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi

The second place I stayed was in Hanoi, the Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi. It is an iconic award-winning luxury hotel found right in the heart of Hanoi’s old quarter. I absolutely adored the rooms and the way old-school heritage colonial elements kept it richly decorated. It also had all the modern amenities I happen to need blended in aka Nespresso and a minibar!Vietnamese Puppet Show

From here it was a super short walk to see many things including the famous puppet show, a beautiful park, and tons of street food options. Hanoi is a truly fascinating city.

Vin Pearl Nha TrangVin Pearl Nha Trang beach views

The third place I stay was another Vin Pearl property but this time I was down south. The Vin Pearl Nha Trang is on one of the best beaches in the entire country. My room was less than ideal, but the patio and the view more than made up for it! It was stunning. One of the days I was able to take a jet ski out into the bay and it was so much fun. I highly recommend it. VinWonders Nha Trang

It was next to an amusement park that had an epic nighttime show at VinWonders Nha Trang, one of the biggest theme parks in Vietnam.

All in all, both models offer drivers something unique; comfort meets convenience in the Vinfast VF9 while green meets practicality in the Vinfast VF8. Whether you’re looking for something sleek or something utilitarian–there’s definitely something here for everyone! So if you’re looking for a new car that will turn heads down Vietnam’s streets then look no further than either one of these two models from Vinfast!

Buying a new car can be a lot of fun. But it can be filled with some anxiety too. It’s a big purchase and you need to make sure that you get a car that ticks all the right boxes.

You need to think about what your budget is and what you need more—a car that’s expensive and not very practical or a vehicle that’s cheaper but more practical for your family. We know… the second option isn’t as sexy or interesting, but it may be what you need right now.

Let’s take a look at how we can help you make the decision.

The Benefits Of Buying An Expensive Car

Grand Wagoneer
Grand Wagoneer

An expensive car usually comes from a well-known manufacturer that’s established itself in the market and earned a good reputation for all the right reasons. These reasons can include:

1. More Safety Features

OK, not all expensive cars come with the top safety features. Sports cars tend to not make it too high up on the list of safe cars to own. However, more expensive luxury cars are usually packed full of the latest and best safety features. Having top-of-the-range safety features is a real win if you’re transporting your family around.

2. Better And More Modern Conveniences

Features like climate control that’s adjustable for each seat, as well as touchscreens for watching TV or playing games for the passengers, are only really found in luxury vehicles. All of these added extras can push the price tag upwards, but they also make traveling that much more comfortable for both the driver and the passengers.

3. The Latest Technology

From automated parking to lane departure assist and the latest in safe braking technology, the more high-end a manufacturer, the more likely you are to see these features. They don’t only make driving safer, they make it more enjoyable too.

4. More Options For Maintenance Plans

When you own any car, you can rest assured that it will always need maintenance. There are annual services, rotating the tires, replacing parts, and so much more that needs to be done regularly.

With a high-end luxury vehicle, you’re more likely to get a comprehensive maintenance plan when you buy it brand new. When you go for a pre-owned car, you can often buy an extended maintenance plan if you go through a reputable dealer.

5. Consistency In Manufacturing Quality

Luxury brands are known for their quality. This is how they got to the top of the list and why they can charge so much for their cars. When you buy one of these more expensive cars, you’re almost guaranteed that the vehicle is of the best possible quality. You’ll also have more recourse if you happen to get one that isn’t.

When Practicality Is More Important In A Car

Expensive cars can also be practical, but if you’re thinking more about a flashy sports car you may want to consider how it will impact your everyday life.

1. Doing The School Run For The Neighborhood

Family life often means doing a lot of running around with kids in the car. What can help to lighten the load is to team up with other families in your neighborhood and form a lift club. This is especially useful if your kids all do the same extracurricular activities after school.

However, if you have a small, impractical car, being part of a lift club is virtually impossible. You cannot lift other kids, and any lift club probably won’t include you as you can’t play a reciprocal part. In this situation, a larger car with three or four rows of seats is the best choice, as it helps you to help others and yourself!

2. Family Road Trips

If you like to go on road trips or vacations with your kids and pets, then you need to consider the practicalities of this. You need storage space for luggage and food. You also need room for everyone to sit comfortably and safely. Uncomfortable kids are a major cause of fights, and fights are distracting for the driver, so comfort is key on all counts.

3. If You Have Dogs – Especially Large Dogs

Dogs and luxury cars don’t always go well together. If you have dogs and other pets that you regularly transport in your car, you may want to consider getting a cheaper vehicle that you don’t mind getting dirty and full of fur. The size of the trunk may need to be a consideration too, especially if you have bigger dogs as they’ll need room for sitting and lying down.

4. When Money Is A Little Tight – Think Repayments And Fuel Economy

A cheaper, more practical car is usually going to be the best bet if your budget is a major consideration for you and your family. When looking at how much you can afford, it’s important to look at your income after tax.

A good rule of thumb is to ensure that you never spend more than 15% of your income on transport. However, that doesn’t mean 15% on car repayments. You need to also factor in the price of fuel and insurance on the vehicle. This is why looking at the fuel economy of the car you want to buy is so important.

5. If You Live In An Area That Gets Very ColdToyota Prius

If you have icy winters with lots of rain and snow, having the right car to transport your family safely is crucial, whether you’re doing the school run, buying groceries, or going on vacation. A larger SUV is a much better option than a luxurious sports car as it can handle bad weather better and has greater ground clearance.

If you need to purchase snow tires to cope with icy roads, you’ll also find that there are cheaper but still good-quality brands for more practical cars. In contrast, luxury cars often require specific high-end brands that cost a fortune.

Choose What Works For Your Budget And Lifestyle

There’s no right or wrong answer to the debate over a luxury car that isn’t practical versus a cheaper car that’s a lot more practical. The answer will come down to a range of factors:

● What you can afford

● Who needs to fit in the car

● Where you’re planning to drive

● Which features you want the most

Once you can comfortably answer these questions, you can start your search for the right car for your needs and for your family.

Sometimes you’ve planned to sleep in your car and other times you end up having to whether you wanted to or not. If you know ahead of time that you will be sleeping in your car sometimes, like car camping, then you should factor that in when you purchase or rent a car.

Minivans

This might come as a surprise but minivans top our list of the best vehicles to sleep in. With most minivans having fold-flat seats it’s super easy to fit up to a queen-size air mattress into the back. How do I know this? I’ve done this many times.

Toyota SiennaToyota Sienna Hybrid AWD

The AWD hybrid version of the Toyota Sienna has a 3500 lb towing capacity and is available as a 7 or 8-passenger seating configuration with a capacious interior for the family and camping gear like tents, coolers, and other outdoor sports equipment. If you have more gear than passengers, the second-row seats are removable and the third row easily folds down for a maximum 150 cubic feet of cargo room. Getting to and from the campsite is easier in the Sienna with the 3.5-liter V6 engine good for 296 horsepower and 263 lb-ft of torque. Available AWD lets you conquer those dirt and gravel roads to get to your campsite with ease.

The second seats do not recline near as much as they should, so those seats are not good for sleeping in. You will definitely want to use the other seats or use an air mattress in the back.

Chrysler Pacifica2019 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid minivan

The 2022 Chrysler Pacifica has an assortment of standard features, roomy seating, lots of cargo space, a fuel-efficient V6 powertrain, and an optional AWD version.

One of the best features the Chrysler Pacifica offers for sleeping in the car is the “Stow n Go” passenger seats fold down into the floor. This makes for a flat and even surface to pack your gear onto or for an air mattress bed.

The floor of the Pacifica is quite deep which allows it to hold the passenger seats, but that also means there is a removable false bottom near the rear of the van aka extra storage space. This is a great place to store camping equipment or other gear.

SUVs

Massive SUVs are pretty easy to sleep in. Again, like a minivan, there’s just a lot of space in them.

Toyota Sequoia

2021 Toyota Sequoia TRD Pro
The 4×4 TRDpro version has a 5.7L V8 which means it is an absolute beast. You will be able to easily camp anywhere in this, even in rough terrain that’s hard to get to. The inside is huge which means several can sleep comfortably inside of it. If you have the seven seater you could lay down on the floor between the middle seats to sleep if you need another spot for someone.

Ford ExpeditionFord Expedition is massive a great minivan alternative

The third row is easy to deal with thanks to a power push button, so you can quickly fold it down, blow up on air mattress and throw down some sleeping bags. I know because I once slept in my Ford Explorer while camping at Crater Lake. It has a remote start, a massive sunroof, removable seats, and lots of extra space. Ford Expedition has a powerful twin-turbo EcoBoost V-6 and an easy-to-use infotainment interface. Prices start at $49,625 and the towing capacity ranges between 5,900 to 6,000 lbs.

GMC Yukon

My dad as a Yukon and it’s gigantic inside and out. I’m not sure why anyone needs an SUV that big, but boy is it handy when it comes to camping!

Pickup Trucks

Toyota TacomaToyota Tacoma TRD Pro

The Toyota Tacoma has been the best-selling midsize truck in America for many years. The Toyota Tacoma TRDPro has some nice features including the 8″ touch-screen head unit w/Apple CarPlay & Android Auto, a 10-way power drivers seat that gives you slightly more head room, and good-looking LED headlights. This one is in Army Green with 16” wheels. The TRD is only available in double cab with a short bed.

Toyota Tundra2022 Toyota Tundra

Built on a new fully-boxed chassis and equipped with a new multilink rear suspension, the Tundra offers impressive capability with a maximum tow rating of 12,000 lbs and a max payload of 1,940 pounds. Featuring two new i-Force powertrains, the i-FORCE 3.5L twin-turbo V6 engine and available i-FORCE MAX 3.5L twin-turbo V6 hybrid, the Tundra not only significantly improves performance but both powertrains improve efficiency as well. Maybe the most surprising aspect of the hybrid i-FORCE MAX powertrain is that it is the most powerful of the options, producing 437 hp @ 5,200 rpm and a whopping 583 lb.-ft. of torque and an impressively low 2,400 rpm.

Those looking to camp off the beaten path will appreciate the off-road technology that includes the available Multi-Terrain Select (MTS), Crawl Control (CRAWL), and selectable rear locker. The all-new multimedia system offers a user-friendly experience with new voice-activated technology or via the massive 14-inch touchscreen.

Using sensors and cameras, Tundra’s driver assistance technology helps drivers easily connect a trailer and Straight Path Assist helps keep it in a straight line when backing up. Additional new interior features include a panoramic moonroof, a tailored cabin, the available fan-favorite power vertical rear window, and an available 12.3-inch digital instrument panel for the driver.

You can sleep inside on the back row or throw an air mattress into the bed of the truck and sleep there.

Pick a Place to Stay

Not everyone wants to camp in a tent. For those that prefer a cabin, we recommend checking out the cabins on VRBO. If you want a glamping experience check out the amazing glamping options on Expedia! To find good campgrounds in Europe check out EuroCamp.

Rent an RV

I highly recommend renting an RV instead of buying one. I bought one, only to realize I hated it. RVShare has all kinds of RVs you can rent.

Choose Activities and Tours

To find great activities in any area I use Get Your Guide and Viator. If we are visiting a city with lots of popular attractions I always check CityPass and GoCard to see if they have discount cards available. When I want to book a full-on multi-day tour I use TourRadar. They’ve got fantastic weekly deals.

Car buying for the single mom can be a vexing procedure, as even seasoned car enthusiasts find it to be a daunting task. However, it can all be worth it when you can get the vehicle you really want and fit it squarely within your budget range. Below you will find tips that have worked for other single moms in the past to help get them behind the wheel of a reliable and trustworthy vehicle.

14 Helpful Car Buying Tips2018 Kia Stinger1. Figure out your budget

Since most single moms live on a budget, sitting down and figuring out how much you can really afford on a car will be most beneficial when it comes to the final sale.

2. What kind of vehicle is the best fit?

You will also want to take the time to decide the type of vehicle that will fit your family’s needs most effectively. Do you have young children that fully depend on you? If so, there are vehicles made specifically with their safety in mind and with built-in technology that helps the parent to keep children occupied while the vehicle is in motion.

3. Factor in your lifestyle

2020 Volkswagen Passat SEL trunk

Do you travel a lot and need extra cargo space for luggage? Or maybe there is an athlete in the family? Either way, trunk space is a must-have, and pre-planning the type of vehicle to buy will help to make sure you purchase the vehicle that best suits your family.

4. Make a list

If you start with a pros/cons list, or a must-have/nice-to-have list, you can see the different options that are desirable to your family. Different options in colors, models, years, and specifications can definitely alter prices and make the cost go up or down.

5. Attend a car show

img 7122Consider going to car shows or car dealers that allow you to sit in and try different vehicles to find the one that best suits your style. While a brand-new car may not be in your budget, most vehicles don’t change much year-on-year.

6. Research

Doing some research on the vehicles you have in mind and maybe some that spark your interest will only be beneficial to you once it comes to the sale since it will reinforce in your mind that you have made the best choice for your family having seen everything the industry has to offer.

7. Check comparison sites

Searching car websites online that specialize in price comparison, reliability, and safety will show you which vehicles really fit your needs like the car buying guide by Prestige Cars. If you are on a budget, this prior research can help avoid the purchase of a gas guzzler or a car with a manufacturer’s defect that will cost you down the road.

8. Check Reviews

Word-of-mouth advertising is very useful as you will be getting first-hand testimony of what people you trust think of a vehicle. This can be very helpful for first-time buyers.

9. Figure out financing

Arranging financing ahead of time can be time-saving and cost-effective. The interest rates at car dealerships can be slightly on the high side, so speaking with a local bank or credit union could help save you money in the end. Sticking to a budget may be very important for a single mom and this is a little-known trick that few people are taking advantage of.

You do not have to wait until you get to a dealership, pick out the vehicle you want, and then see if they will finance it, possibly being let down if it does not work in your budget. Instead, you can walk into the dealership empowered, knowing you already have the approval of a lending institution and how much is in your budget to buy your vehicle.

Plus, if you already have a rate from your bank the dealership will often try to beat it, which saves you even more money.

10. Figure out insurance

When figuring out your budget, you will want to factor in insurance on the vehicle purchase. When purchasing a vehicle, the insurance on a brand-new vehicle could be much higher than on a used vehicle due to the value of the vehicle.

Some lending companies may insist on having gap insurance or full coverage, so make sure that when contacting insurance companies for price quotes you are getting a full spectrum of prices for services available.

11. Check to see how much a car’s oil change costs

Vehicle maintenance is very important when factoring in which type of car to buy. These are the types of expenditures that in the long run can be less painful if planned for in advance. Vehicle parts, tires, and regular maintenance can all end up costing more if not planned for when budgeting because you will have to take from another part of your budget to cover these costs if they are not properly planned.

12. Leave children at home

Avoid taking your children with you when shopping for vehicles. They will distract you from your final goal. They will input their ideas and help the salesperson drive up the cost of the “chosen” vehicle. These types of distractions can hurt your car buying experience, so do it while they are in school.

13. Bring someone with you

Sometimes it helps to bring a friend, family member, or a supportive person with you for vehicle purchases. It can help you decide what’s right for you and your family while giving you the support to remain strong and stick to your budget.

14. Always Negotiate

Lastly, do not forget to negotiate. Negotiating with salespeople helps to lower your sticker price and get you the best possible deal for your budget.

Hopefully, this helps you get the best deal possible on your next car. Good luck! 14 Car Buying Tips for Single Moms
