Planning a dreamy Belize escape? After spending a weekend at Alaia Belize in San Pedro, I’ve put together this insider guide covering the best things to do, what the resort is really like, where to eat, and how to make the most of a quick island getaway. From snorkeling Hol Chan Marine Park to lazy pool moments and exploring Ambergris Caye, this itinerary is packed with firsthand tips to help you plan the perfect trip to Alaia Belize.

Day 1: Check-In, Chill Out, and Rooftop Cocktails

Alaia Belize sits right along the coast, just 600 yards from the Belize Barrier Reef — the second largest in the world — so the water views are constant and spectacular. The resort is impressively well laid out with three pools, including Belize’s first-ever suspended rooftop pool (adults only and 360 degrees of “wow”). Down below, you’ll find two additional pools surrounded by cabanas, palm trees, and a casual island vibe.

Even though it’s a luxury property, Alaia manages to stay welcoming to families. There’s a kids’ playground, tons of open lawn space, and easy access to the calm Caribbean shallows, so little ones can splash safely while parents sip something cold. Down on the beach area, there is corn hole and giant chess.

The resort’s accommodations are equally impressive. I stayed in a one-bedroom suite that could honestly double as a beachfront condo. It came with a fully stocked kitchen (yes, a real fridge, stove, and even a blender for frozen drinks), a separate living area, and not one but three balconies — each offering its own view of paradise. Whether I was watching sunrise over the reef or sunset over San Pedro, there was always a perfect perch. They will bring a rollaway should you need one.

Inside, the design leans modern coastal: soft neutrals, woven textures, and natural woods. It’s the kind of space where you can kick off your sandals, pour a rum punch, and immediately feel at home.

Once checked in, I had a tough decision to make: which pool to hit first. Alaia has three—including Belize’s first-ever suspended rooftop pool with panoramic views of the Caribbean. (Pro tip: it’s adults-only, which means you can sip your cocktail in peace while feeling wildly sophisticated.)

After a quick boutique browse (because resort shopping is cardio), I cleaned up for dinner at Sea Salt Restaurant—the resort’s Mediterranean grill that elevates local ingredients into culinary art. Think grilled seafood, creative small plates, and a glass of wine that pairs dangerously well with Caribbean breezes. The portions are huge, so plan to split everything.

Alaia has six restaurants and four bars, so you’ll never have to eat in the same place twice (unless you want to — which you probably will).

Day 2: Secret Beach and the Truck Stop

Breakfast at The Terrace at Sea Salt

Morning started slowly, just how I like it—breakfast at my leisure at The Terrace at Sea Salt. Fresh Belizean fruit, strong coffee, and a view that made me consider buying a timeshare (don’t worry, I didn’t).

By 10 a.m., it was time for adventure. I checked in with the concierge for our excursion, grabbed my golf cart, and headed out to explore San Pedro. If you’ve never driven a golf cart through town, it’s equal parts charming and chaotic—but in the best way. JK, the drive is super intense and the roads are awful. The speed bumps are massive and many streets are cobblestone. My nerves were super on edge by the time we got to the beach.

Taking a golf cart to Secret Beach

My first stop: Secret Beach, the not-so-secret hotspot with ocean tables, clear turquoise water, and tropical drinks that make you lose track of time. There are a ton of various places you can eat, drink, and lounge. I recommend not going to the first one you come across but instead drive to the end of the row for a better experience. There were tons of people selling crap the entire time so that part sucked but otherwise a lowkey day.

Secret Beach on San Pedro Island in Belize

You could spend all day at Secret Beach, but by 3 p.m., I cruised to The Truck Stop, Belize’s first shipping container food park. It’s quirky, local, and the perfect place to grab a cold drink and snack before heading back. I absolutely didn’t want to drive after dark on those roads.

Dinner that evening was a vibe—Vista Rooftop Sushi Bar. The sunset views are unreal, and the sushi was fresh, creative, and just the right amount of indulgent. Order a cocktail (or two) and stay for the view. The cocktail menu was the most unique one I have come across in quite some time.

Day 3: Spa Bliss and Dinner Under the Stars

Breakfast in bed? Yes, please. Alaia lets you charge all your food and drinks to your room, so I fully leaned into the “treat yourself” theme.

The rest of the morning was spent at my private poolside cabana, complete with a dedicated server making sure my drink never ran dry. If you’re going to relax, this is the way to do it—between dips in the pool, pool views, and gourmet snacks on standby.

That afternoon, I headed to K’In Spa & Wellness Center for a 60-minute Swedish massage. The spa is serene, modern, and totally indulgent, offering everything from facials to local handmade skincare products. By the end, I felt like butter on a hot Belizean day—completely melted.

As if the day couldn’t get any better, Alaia capped it off with a Dine Under the Stars experience: a private four-course dinner on the sand, waves lapping nearby, and the kind of meal that makes you fall a little in love—with life, with Belize, maybe with whoever’s sitting across the table. I was with Lindsey, so not really the vibe but I could see it could be.

Day 4: A Slow Goodbye

Alaia Belize Rooftop Pool

Sunday morning came too soon. After one last lazy breakfast overlooking the water, I reluctantly packed up and headed for the super short flight back to Belize City.

It’s always hard to leave paradise, but Alaia Belize somehow manages to feel both lively and peaceful, sophisticated yet laid-back—a perfect follow-up to the quiet luxury of Cayo Espanto.

Whether you’re planning a romantic getaway or a luxe friends’ trip, Alaia is that perfect blend of Caribbean charm and resort indulgence you’ll be talking about long after you’ve gone home.

If you are debating on visiting Riviera Maya but do not want to stay at an all-inclusive resort, I highly recommend Vidanta Riviera Maya just 25-minutes south of the Cancun airport. They offer a variety of room types to accommodate a wide range of budgets. Plus, with a 1000-acre property, they’ve got tons to do right on-site. From the beautiful stretch of beach to unique dining experiences to impressive shows like Joya by Cirque du Soleil your family will stay entertained for days. I recommend spending at least 4 days here.

Grand Luxxe

If you can afford it, stay in the Grand Luxxe section of the resort. (There are 6 hotels here to choose from.) Here everything is slightly elevated including a private pool area with a hot tub, a well-equipped fitness center, a decadent spa, and access to the exclusive Beach Club. We loved our room. We had access to the connecting lock-out room as well giving us two master bedrooms both had large walk-in showers and huge jacuzzi tubs. The patio was huge with a dining table, lounge chairs, and a shallow pool.

Beach Club

Our favorite place to spend our time was the Beach Club. This high-end pool has room for everyone to feel exclusive. We went here everyday and each time we got our own cabana with lounge chairs and outlets so I could charge my phone. It felt very private, was never crowded, and had a super chill vibe. There’s even a bar cart roaming around ready to make you an Aperol spritz! My only regret is not spending more time here.

Jungala Water Park

Vidanta Riviera Maya Jungala Water Park
Photos by Meagan Wristen

There’s a fairly new waterpark located on property called Jungala. It has large body slides and tube rides. There is a large lazy river with a bar halfway through it so clever. Drinks are an additional cost. There is also a large kid’s area. Our favorite part was the hot tub and our private cabana. The cabana had waitstaff so we could order lunch. Plus, the cabana area also had it’s own private bathrooms which was much appreciated. How often do you see a nice clean bathroom at a waterpark! The waterpark is an additional cost but the hotels golf carts will take you over to the entrace. Buy tickets in advance.

Joya Cirque du Soleil

Vidanta Riviera Maya Joya cirque du Soleil
Photos by Meagan Wristen

I had heard there was a Cirque du Soleil show in the area but I was surprised to find out it was part of Vidanta. The show is incredible. I don’t want to give it away but if you’ve seen any of their other shows know this one is just as good. We arrived early to enjoy the 3-course menu for dinner. There’s also an option for dessert and drinks to be added to your tickets. When you do the dinner you are right up close which we liked. Although, I recommend not sitting in the front row unless you want to end up on stage. Purchase tickets in advance.

Wellness Refuge Spa

Vidanta Riviera Maya Spa
Photos by Meagan Wristen

Eden and I LOVED the spa so much we spend over 3 hours there. It started with hydrotherapy where we enjoyed a steam room, sauna, hot tubs, foot shower while walking on rocks, heated lounge chairs, and more. After a busy few days, it was a dream for us to be able to slow down. After hydrotherapy, we were taken to our room. We shared a treatment room that kicked off with some sort of interesting Mayan spa welcome. Then we had an 80-minute full body massage that was divine. Adding the spa to your visit is a must. We visited the newer spa in the Grand Luxxe area. I believe there is another spa on the property but did not have the chance to see it. We also didn’t see any monkeys which was a bummer.

Le Petit Chef

Vidanta Riviera Maya Le Petit Chef
Photos by Meagan Wristen

Le Petit Chef is an extremely unique dinner show that exceeded all my expectations. There’s a projector that projects the chef onto the table, and he walks you all through your dinner. It’s colorful, entertaining, and educational. Plus, the food was good. I did the pairing, which included one beer, tequila, a cocktail, and some wine. I thought the pairing was just okay, so if you are on a budget, do the dinner only. If you are traveling with kids, this will be one of the highlights of your trip.

Waves n’ Tacos Auténtica Taquería

Vidanta Riviera Maya Antojitos
Photos by Meagan Wristen

One of our favorite eateries in the Salum area of the resort is Waves n’ Tacos Auténtica Taquería. Their tacos al pastor are delicious. Plus, they’ve got 4 or 5 salsas to choose from on every table. Their guacamole is excellent too. The other places to eat were good too, but this just happened to be our favorite. I go to Mexico to eat Mexican food, not hamburgers.

Personal Chef

Private chef experience at Vidanta
Photos by MommyTravels.net

One of the coolest options you have when you stay in a room with a full kitchen is to have a private chef. The chef will come to your room and make breakfast or dinner. We had a chef whip up our breakfast one morning and it was incredible. It was a ton of food and a lovely setup. For breakfast, each person gets to pick a main dish. Everything else you see in the photo comes with the experience too. They will wrap up the leftovers and your fridge will be full.

Salum

Photos by MommyTravels.net

The Salum area is a bohemian area mixed with shopping, restaurants, cafes, and sometimes entertainment. We only managed to catch the shops open once since we spent most of our time at the pool or doing other things in the evening. At night, the steps light up in a bunch of different colors and is neat to see.

White Sand Beaches

Vidanta Riviera Maya

Due to the massive size of the resort, the stretch of beach is massive too. I never had to wait for a seat because there are just so many places to hang out and sit. The beach in front of the main pool area has swings, cornhole, and other games. The beach near the Grand Luxxe has tons of chairs and tucked away between the beach and the pool are hammocks and other cozy spots to sit.

All in all, our experience at Vidanta Riviera Maya was wonderful. And I am sure you can see why I chose Riviera Maya as one of my 2025 Best Family Vacation Destinations.

Check current rates for the Grand Mayan portion of the property here. To stay in the same section we did, the Grand Luxxe area, you can check the rates here.

If you’ve ever dreamed of escaping to your own private island—where someone remembers your favorite drink, sets up paddleboards before you even ask, and serves every meal in the privacy of your oceanfront villa—then allow me to introduce you to Cayo Espanto in Belize. It’s a private island resort just off the coast of Ambergris Caye, and yes, it’s every bit as jaw-droppingly perfect as it sounds.

I recently spent three nights there in Villa Aurora, one of the island’s stunning two-bedroom villas, and I can confidently say it’s the kind of place that spoils you for life. You’ll never look at a “beachfront suite” the same way again.

Welcome to Island Perfection

Cayo Espanto a private island in Belize

Cayo Espanto is the definition of “barefoot luxury.” The island is tiny—only seven villas—but every single one is right on the water with its own private plunge pool, personal dock, and houseman who seems to have Jedi-level intuition.

Our houseman greeted us the moment we arrived by boat, welcoming us with chilled towels, Aperol spritzes, and a mountain of chips, salsa, and guacamole (which just so happens to be my love language).

Before you even set foot on the island, the team at Cayo Espanto sends an intake form that covers everything from dietary preferences to favorite snacks and drinks. And they take it seriously. Like, “your-guacamole-is-already-being-smashed-as-you-dock” seriously.

Every detail is tailored to you, which is why this place is so incredible for families with teenagers—everyone gets exactly what they love, no negotiations required.

Our Villa: Aurora in Every Sense

We stayed in Villa Aurora, a spacious two-bedroom retreat that sits right next to the Caribbean Sea. Each bedroom opens directly onto the deck, where the turquoise water practically begs you to dive in. There’s a private pool, plenty of outdoor seating, and a hammock perfectly positioned for afternoon naps or pretending you’re answering emails.

Inside, the villa is airy and elegant, with Belizean wood details, crisp white linens, and a bathroom big enough to make you consider living there permanently. The open design lets in the ocean breeze and the sound of waves lapping below.

If you’re traveling with teens, the two-bedroom layout is ideal—everyone has their own space (and their own bathroom, which is basically the definition of peace on earth).

Dining: Personalized Perfection

Dinner at Cayo Espanto

Here’s the thing about dining at Cayo Espanto: you’ll never see a buffet line or hear the words “limited menu.” Every single meal is customized just for you.

Before each meal, our chef would present a menu featuring multiple entrée choices. Everything was beautifully plated and absurdly fresh—especially the seafood, which tasted like it had been caught just hours before.

Because of the November weather, we dined exclusively on our villa’s patio, but under normal conditions, they’ll happily set up your meal on the dock, beach, or even under the stars on the beach. We did see a beach set up one night for someone’s 40th anniversary. We never really saw any of the other people on the island, but I think there were 3 or 4 others there.

Cayo Espanto Breakfast
Cayo Espanto Breakfast | Photos by Meagan Wristen

My favorite breakfast was the traditional Belizean breakfast—eggs, refried beans, fry jacks (glorious fried dough), and fresh tropical fruit. Lunches often included ceviche, grilled fish, or salads bursting with local ingredients. And dinners? Think lobster tail, coconut shrimp, and melt-in-your-mouth desserts.

Oh, and don’t skip afternoon tea—a daily ritual that feels wonderfully civilized, even if you’re still in your swimsuit. Tea is typically an assortment of teas, finger sandwiches, and cookies. All of that was great but the next day I opted for my tea to be an Aperol Spritz and chips and salsa.

Adventure Awaits: Paddleboarding, Snorkeling, and More

Water activities at Cayo Espanto

Yes, Cayo Espanto is luxurious, but it’s also full of opportunities for adventure—making it an ideal balance for families who like a little activity with their pampering.

I spent my mornings paddleboarding around the island, watching stingrays glide beneath the surface and pelicans dive for their breakfast. There’s also a water trampoline, which is way more fun than it sounds (and doubles as a surprisingly good workout).

Paddlingboarding at Cayo Espanto

One of the highlights of the trip was a snorkeling excursion to Hol Chan Marine Park, just a short boat ride away. It’s one of Belize’s most famous snorkeling spots, and for good reason—crystal-clear water, colorful coral reefs, and more marine life than you can imagine. We swam alongside sea turtles, nurse sharks, and schools of shimmering fish. Teens will absolutely love it. (This is an additional cost.)

Back on the island, you can enjoy non-motorized water sports like sailing, kayaking, and more paddleboarding—all included in your stay.

Spa Bliss on Island Time

Spa at Cayo Espanto

After all that adventure (or, you know, lounging), we indulged in a massage right at our villa. The sound of gentle waves mixed with the soft ocean breeze made it one of the most relaxing treatments I’ve ever had.

For families, Cayo Espanto’s spa offerings can be adapted for all ages. Teens can enjoy lighter treatments like facials or foot massages, while parents go for deep-tissue bliss. It’s the perfect way to wind down after a day of sun and saltwater.

A Private Island That Welcomes Families

Cayo Espanto Private Island
Cayo Espanto Private Island | Photo by Meagan Wristen

While Cayo Espanto is often marketed as a couples’ escape (and it’s definitely romantic), it’s also surprisingly well-equipped for families. When kids stay, the staff goes out of their way to make it magical.

Our houseman explained that for younger guests, they provide sand toys, organize movie nights on a huge inflatable screen, and even teach kids how to sail. That’s right—your child can learn to navigate a boat while you sip wine on the deck. Parenting win.

Teens, meanwhile, will love the freedom and adventure that comes with island life—snorkeling, exploring by kayak, and maybe even unplugging for a few hours (miracles do happen). The wifi on the island was great so if they don’t want to unplug that’s not an issue.

Sustainability and Comfort in the Tropics

Cayo Espanto operates with sustainability in mind. All freshwater on the island comes from an on-site Reverse Osmosis Treatment system, providing safe drinking water without wasteful imports.

And while you’re in the tropics (read: mosquitoes happen), the resort has a mosquito misting system that keeps pesky bugs at bay using an extract from chrysanthemums. It’s completely safe for humans, effective for insects, and basically lets you enjoy sunset without becoming a snack. However, it’s not 100% so pack a lot of bug spray.

They also have nets for the bed at night so you don’t get mosquito bites while you sleep.

The Service: Beyond Exceptional

Cayo Espanto food

If luxury is defined by attention to detail, then Cayo Espanto has mastered it. Every staff member—from the boat captain to the chefs to our incredible houseman—seemed genuinely invested in making our stay unforgettable.

Need more ice? It appears. Want breakfast 30 minutes later so you can sleep in? Done. Mention that you love Aperol spritzes once? They’re waiting for you at sunset.

This level of service makes it perfect for multi-generational family trips too. Grandparents, teens, and parents alike will feel cared for without having to coordinate a thing.

Rates and Realities

Luxury like this comes at a price, but for what’s included, it’s surprisingly all-encompassing. Rates cover your private villa, three gourmet meals daily, snacks, drinks (except wine, Champagne, and cordials), and non-motorized water sports.

The resort typically requires a four-night minimum stay, though exceptions can sometimes be made. Over the holidays, a seven-night minimum applies (and if you’re planning to stay through Christmas and New Year’s, make it 14).

With only a handful of villas and a maximum of 18 guests on the entire island, privacy and exclusivity are guaranteed.

Final Thoughts: Belize, but Make It Private

Private pool at Cayo Espanto

Cayo Espanto is one of those rare destinations that manages to be both luxurious and deeply personal. It’s the kind of place where you can completely disconnect—no crowded beaches, no noisy neighbors, just the sea, the sky, and impeccable service.

Whether you’re planning a family trip with teenagers, a romantic getaway, or even a multi-generational celebration, this island checks every box. It’s adventure and relaxation wrapped in one stunning Caribbean package.

As for me, I’m still dreaming about paddleboarding at sunrise, eating fry jacks on the patio, and pretending Villa Aurora was my permanent address. Because once you’ve had a taste of Cayo Espanto, there’s no going back to ordinary vacations.

If you’re the kind of traveler who loves your margaritas served with a side of culture, Pueblo Bonito Vantage Centro Histórico Mazatlán is going to steal your heart. Tucked in the middle of Mazatlán’s colorful historic district—Centro Histórico—this boutique hotel is equal parts elegance and authenticity. Forget the mega-resorts on the Golden Zone. This is where you come for cobblestone streets, cathedral bells, cocktails, and real Mexican soul—with five-star comfort to match.

I stayed here recently and honestly? It’s hard to imagine a better spot for adults who appreciate good design, good food, and good Wi-Fi (let’s be real, that matters).

Location: The Heart of Old Mazatlán

Mazatlan Centro Histórico on Day of the Dead

If location is everything, this one’s got it in spades. Pueblo Bonito Vantage sits right in Centro Histórico, Mazatlán’s most charming neighborhood. You can walk everywhere—Plaza Machado, the Angela Peralta Theater, art galleries, local cafés, live music venues, and some of the city’s best restaurants are all within a few blocks.

There’s something magical about this area. Mornings smell like espresso and fresh pan dulce, afternoons are filled with sunshine and slow strolls, and evenings turn into impromptu concerts in the plaza. Staying here means you’re part of the rhythm of the city, not just watching it from behind a resort wall.

And bonus—it’s only about 25 minutes from Mazatlán International Airport. So, yes, you can go from baggage claim to a cocktail faster than your luggage tracker can update.

The Vibe: Boutique Luxury for Adults

Entry to Pueblo Bonito Vantage Centro Histórico Mazatlán

Let’s get one thing straight—this isn’t a “bring the kids” kind of place. Pueblo Bonito Vantage is sophisticated, serene, and decidedly grown-up. The building itself is a lovingly restored 19th-century property that blends classic architecture with modern Mexican design. Think tall ceilings, carved wood doors, airy courtyards, and just enough marble to remind you you’re somewhere fancy.

It’s small—around two dozen rooms—so it never feels crowded or impersonal. Instead, it’s intimate in the best possible way. You’ll actually get to know the staff (and they’ll remember how you like your coffee). It’s the kind of place where you can breathe, relax, and remember what an actual vacation feels like.

The Rooms: Chic, Comfortable, and Thoughtfully Designed

Regular Room at Pueblo Bonito Vantage Centro Histórico Mazatlán

Every room at Pueblo Bonito Vantage feels like a calm retreat from the bustling streets outside. The décor mixes local craftsmanship with modern elegance—handcrafted tiles, artisanal light fixtures, and neutral tones that let the architecture shine.

Expect:

 • Luxury bedding so soft you’ll start Googling the brand before checkout
 • Spacious bathrooms with rain showers and designer toiletries
 • Nespresso machines for those early mornings before exploring
 • Smart TVs and high-speed Wi-Fi because we all need our Netflix time

It’s stylish without being fussy. Every detail feels deliberate, from the art on the walls to the lighting that somehow makes everyone look like they’ve had a full eight hours of sleep (even when you haven’t).

Dining & Drinks: Gourmet Without the Attitude

Foodies, rejoice. Pueblo Bonito Vantage takes its culinary game seriously. You won’t find endless buffets here—what you’ll find instead are carefully curated dishes that celebrate both local Mazatleco flavors and international flair.

Melville Restaurant

Named after the author Herman Melville (who actually visited Mazatlán in the 1800s), Melville is refined without being stuffy. The menu rotates seasonally but expect fresh seafood, handmade pastas, and creative dishes that pair perfectly with their wine list.

Bar 1844

If I could bottle this bar’s atmosphere, I would. It’s sophisticated yet cozy, with moody lighting, plush seating, and a cocktail list that rivals anything you’d find in Mexico City. The mixologists take their craft seriously, serving signature drinks infused with local spirits and ingredients. Whether you’re a mezcal enthusiast or a classic martini loyalist, this is your new happy place.

Café and Room Service

Room Service at Pueblo Bonito Vantage

For early risers or late-night snackers, the in-house café and 24-hour room service have you covered. Breakfast in bed, midday espresso, or late-night guacamole—because balance. Sadly, I didn’t know that this was an option until my very last day.

The Pool: Where the Magic Happens

Pueblo Bonito Vantage Centro Histórico Mazatlán Hot tub and pool

While the hotel doesn’t have sprawling resort grounds (and thank goodness for that), it does have a small pool area that’s pure bliss. My favorite was the hot tub, which, upon request, they turned up the heat on.

It’s quiet, adults-only, and ridiculously photogenic. If your idea of a perfect afternoon is alternating between the pool and a good book, you’ll be very happy here.

Experiences: Immersive, Authentic, and Relaxing

The best part about staying in Centro Histórico is that your experience extends far beyond the hotel. This area is alive with art, music, and history—and Pueblo Bonito Vantage makes it easy to dive in.

You can wander through the Angela Peralta Theater, explore art galleries and boutiques, or stop for ceviche at one of the nearby open-air cafés. Plaza Machado, just a short walk away, transforms into a lively hub at night with string lights, live bands, and people dining under the stars.

If you want to blend beach time with culture, the hotel can arrange day passes to its sister Pueblo Bonito resorts on the Golden Zone, giving you full beach access while still keeping your base in the heart of the city.

The Spa: Small but Sublime

Even boutique hotels deserve a good spa, and this one delivers. The Vantage Spa offers personalized treatments that focus on relaxation and restoration—think massages, facials, and body scrubs that use locally inspired ingredients. After a long travel day or a few too many cocktails, this place might just be the reset button you didn’t know you needed.

Next door to the spa is a small gym.

Service: Refined and Genuinely Warm

Pueblo Bonito Vantage nails what so many luxury hotels miss—the sweet spot between polished professionalism and genuine friendliness. The staff greets you by name, anticipates what you need, and actually seems to enjoy making your stay perfect. It’s high-end service without the stiff formality, and it makes a world of difference.

Because you’re staying in the historic district, the nightlife is right outside your door. Forget the crowded resort bars—here, it’s all about local flavor. Grab cocktails at one of the nearby rooftop lounges, enjoy live jazz in the plaza, or find a tucked-away tequila bar and chat with locals.

And if you want to turn the night up a notch, the Malecón (Mazatlán’s famous seaside promenade) is just a short walk or cab ride away.

Who It’s For

Pueblo Bonito Vantage Centro Histórico is for travelers who crave authenticity without sacrificing comfort. It’s perfect for:

 • Couples looking for a romantic, cultural getaway
 • Solo travelers who want to explore safely and stylishly
 • Girlfriend trips where conversation, cocktails, and charm are priorities
 • Digital nomads seeking somewhere inspiring (and quiet) to work between adventures

It’s not for families with young kids, spring breakers, or anyone who measures vacation quality by how many buffet options exist. This is refined, restful travel for adults who appreciate details. If you are looking for an all-inclusive resort check out Dreams Estrella Del Mar Mazatlán.

Tips for Your Stay

 • Book a room with a balcony or terrace. Others told me these were available. I had a room that didn’t even have an outside window, so I cannot confirm. My friend’s room had an outdoor shower but not a balcony.
 • Don’t skip breakfast. The coffee and pastries are exceptional. Apparently, some room rates include breakfast. Mine did, but no one told me that until late into the stay, so I only had breakfast once. It was quite good.
 • Pack for style and comfort. You’ll be walking on cobblestones—think sandals with grip, not stilettos.
 • Go exploring. Everything in Centro Histórico is walkable—don’t miss Plaza Machado at night.

Final Thoughts

Pueblo Bonito Vantage Centro Histórico Mazatlán is a rare find—a luxury hotel that blends history, art, and hospitality into something truly special. It’s not just a place to stay; it’s a way to experience Mazatlán from the inside out. You can sip mezcal under the stars, stroll through centuries-old streets, and retreat each night to a sanctuary of modern comfort.

If you’re planning a trip to Mazatlán and want something that feels sophisticated, walkable, and refreshingly authentic, this is it. Come for the charm, stay for the service, and leave already planning your return. Check current rates.

The post Castle Leslie: Ireland’s Fairytale Estate You Can Actually Stay In appeared first on Mommy Travels.

There are castles you can tour, castles you can photograph, and then there’s Castle Leslie Estate — a place where you can actually live out your Irish fairytale. Tucked away in County Monaghan, just over the border from Northern Ireland, this historic estate has been home to the Leslie family since 1665 and is one of the last great Irish castle estates still owned by its founding family.

But this isn’t just a relic of history. Castle Leslie is a stunning destination with luxury rooms, sprawling gardens, its own gin, and even 30 horses waiting in the pastures. Staying here feels less like checking into a hotel and more like stepping into a living storybook.

A Castle with History

Castle Leslie Lodge

The estate’s story begins in 1608, when the house itself was built. By 1665, John Leslie, who had become a bishop in Ireland, purchased the estate with £2,000 he was awarded for “good deeds” — at the age of 91. (Let that sink in. At 91, most people are thrilled with a birthday cake, not shopping for castles.)

Over the centuries, the Leslie family left their mark on the property, and the current castle as we know it, was completed in the 1860s. The story goes that one of the later Leslie wives, Constance, wasn’t particularly keen on living with her in-laws (relatable), so the castle was built as her private home. She eventually inherited the estate and spearheaded major renovations in the 1870s, meaning much of the castle’s furniture today dates from that remodel.

The castle is full of fascinating artifacts. One standout is a fireplace mantel from Florence, taken from a Roman Catholic church and dating back to the 1490s. The family has also been prolific writers — if you want to dive deeper into their history and eccentricities, pick up Fortune’s Daughters or one of the many books written by one of the family members.

Staying in a Fairytale

When it comes to accommodations, Castle Leslie offers several options:

 • The Castle itself has 21 rooms, each with its own personality. Some are adjoining, making them perfect for couples or friends traveling together. The décor feels lavish and historic without being stuffy — think four-poster beds, velvet drapes, and quirky antique touches.
 • The Lodge, just a short stroll from the castle, has 50 rooms with a more relaxed, country-house vibe. Some of these rooms are interconnected, which makes it a great option if you’re traveling with kids.
 • The Old Stable Mews are the go-to for families with two or three children. These self-catering accommodations give you the independence of a private stay with the perks of being on the estate grounds.

No matter where you stay, you’ll feel connected to the estate’s history — but with all the modern comforts you need to enjoy it.

The Gardens & Grounds

One of the highlights of Castle Leslie is simply wandering the 1,000-acre estate, which is dotted with shimmering lakes, ancient woodlands, and meticulously kept gardens. The private walled gardens are full of vegetables and fruit trees that our grown for Castle Leslie’s restaurant.

And then there are the horses. With 30 horses on the property, Castle Leslie is one of Ireland’s premier equestrian destinations. Whether you’re an experienced rider or someone who’s only ever been on a carousel, the estate offers lessons, guided rides, and trails that let you soak in the beauty of the grounds from the saddle. Every time we mentioned to someone we were headed here, they swore up and down that we must ride the horses!

A Taste of Castle Leslie: The Estate’s Gin & Dining

On top of everything else, Castle Leslie makes its own gin. Crafted in small batches, it’s infused with botanicals from the estate itself. Whether you’re sipping it neat, in a G&T, or as part of a cocktail, it’s one of those rare souvenirs that lets you take the taste of the estate home with you.

Dining here is also an experience in itself. Snaffles Restaurant, located at The Lodge, serves a five-course menu that celebrates local and seasonal ingredients. Meals feel indulgent but approachable — think beautifully prepared lamb, fresh seafood, and decadent desserts.

Why Castle Leslie Feels Different

Inside Castle Leslie

There are plenty of castles in Ireland, but Castle Leslie stands out because it’s not a museum — it’s alive. The family still owns it, the rooms are designed for real stays, and the estate feels like it has a personality of its own. One of the family members still lives here today. It’s equal parts luxurious escape and quirky family home.

Staying here doesn’t just mean sleeping in a fancy bed, although it was pretty fantastic. It means wandering halls filled with stories, riding through centuries-old woodlands, sipping gin made just a few steps away, and realizing that sometimes, history can feel very much alive.

Final Thoughts

Castle Leslie isn’t just a place to stay — it’s an experience. Between its storied history, stunning gardens, family-friendly accommodations, and even its own gin, this estate is the definition of an Irish fairytale come true.

If you’re planning a trip to Ireland and want something beyond the standard hotel, make Castle Leslie your splurge. It’s historic, it’s enchanting, and yes — it’s freaking awesome. Check current rates.

From delicious dining options to thrilling water slides, there’s something for everyone at The Cove Atlantis. Let’s dive into why this resort is so popular with parents and their families.

The Cove at Atlantis Review

The property itself is visually stunning, nestled between two private white-sand beaches. As soon as we arrived, I was impressed by the scope of the open-air lobby, oversized in every way. What was truly incredible to me was that I booked it with Marriott points. It cost me 60,000 points for one night here, plus $67.95, which was the resort fee and tax.

Accommodations and Amenities The Cove Atlantis Room

The Cove Atlantis offers a wide variety of accommodations ranging from suites to villas. Whether you’re looking for a budget-friendly, family-friendly suite or an ultra-luxurious villa experience, The Cove has something to fit every family’s needs. Plus, they offer impeccable butler service.

We had a Deluxe Ocean Suite room with 1 king bed and one sofa bed. So, it wasn’t one of their fancy suites and I was still delighted with it. Here is a tour of our room.

Activities for Everyone Atlantis Bahamas

The Cove also has plenty of activities for every member of your family. For younger children, there’s an interactive Aquaventure water park complete with thrilling water slides and a lazy river where they can float around all day long!

There are several restaurants featuring delicious cuisine from around the world as well as numerous lounges and bars that serve up refreshing drinks and specialty cocktails. There are also shopping opportunities onsite including luxury designer stores such as Gucci and Louis Vuitton.

For those who want some relaxation time away from the kids, The Cove also offers a full-service spa that provides massages, facials, body treatments, yoga classes, and much more! There’s also an adults-only pool located here.

Cove at Atlantis FAQs

1. Is The Cove Atlantis All-Inclusive?
Sadly, no. It is not all-inclusive which is surprising considering how much it costs to stay here. There are lots of restaurants nearby and on-site.

2. Where is The Cove Atlantis located?
The Cove is part of Atlantis. It isn’t a separate hotel. It’s just a separate tower on the main property.

3. How do I get to The Cove Atlantis?
You have to fly into Lynden Pindling International Airport in Nassau. From there catch a taxi. The ride over is beautiful, especially if it’s your first time in the Bahamas.

4. What is the weather like at The Cove Atlantis?
The weather is great, but the pools are not heated so make sure you pick a warmer month to visit.

5. Is there a day pass for The Cove at Atlantis?
Atlantis does offer a day pass that must be purchased in advance. The Atlantis Day Pass allows you to enjoy Aquaventure water park, pools, and white sandy beaches. You can also see their collection of marine habitats and marine exhibits; dine al fresco and choose from a variety of fine dining and casual experiences; try your luck in the Atlantis Casino, stroll to Marina Village and shop at the Crystal Court Shops!

I checked prices for a random day in January and it was $190.00 for anyone 13 or older and $95 for kids 4 years old to 12 years old. To be honest, I do not think at that price it is worth visiting.

6. Do they charge for parking at The Cove Atlantis?
Yes, there is a daily parking fee.

7. What are the prices like at The Cove Atlantis?

The Cove is the most expensive place to stay at Atlantis. It’s an average of $600 a night.

Get Travel Insurance

Unfortunately, there are a lot of things that can go wrong on any trip. Be prepared for the worst with travel insurance. We use Travelex or Safety Wing (often cheaper).

Book Flights

I use Skyscanner to find flights. I use it so much, I wrote an entire guide to finding cheap flights with Skyscanner! Another option for finding deals is FlightHub.

Book a Place to Stay

I recommend using Expedia.com or Hotels.com for most hotel bookings. I prefer to book directly with Marriott when I stay there because of their excellent military discount.

If you prefer staying in a vacation rental instead, I recommend VRBO. If you are looking for a hostel, I use HostelWorld.

Choose Activities and Tours

To find great activities in any area I use Viator. If we are visiting a city with lots of popular attractions I always check CityPass, PogoPass, and GoCard to see if they have discount cards available. Groupon also tends to have a lot of local travel deals.

When I want to book a full-on multi-day tour I use TourRadar. They’ve got fantastic weekly deals. If going somewhere in Mexico or the Caribbean, I use Apple Vacations.

Rent a Car or Get a Lyft

More often than not, Lyft is cheaper than Uber. Use my Lyft link for an $18 credit! For a car rental in any country, I recommend Hertz or Discover Cars.

Save Money on Gas

Upside a free app gets you cash back on gas! Use promo code RV2Q2 to get an extra 15¢/gal bonus on your first purchase.

Get a Visa

I use iVisa to get all of my Visas.

The post Best Baby Monitor for Travelers appeared first on Mommy Travels.

]]>
Traveling with a baby or toddler? Then you already know how quickly your packing list fills up — and how every square inch of space matters. Whether you’re traveling for a weekend getaway or heading abroad for a longer trip, bringing along a baby monitor that actually works on the go can make a huge difference in peace of mind.

As someone who tries to keep travel gear as minimal (and functional) as possible, I’ve tried a few different options — and one stands out far above the rest. Whether you’re staying in a hotel, VRBO, or crashing at grandma’s, this list has something for every type of traveling parent.

My personal top pick for best travel baby monitor – Annie Baby Monitor App

Why bring a baby monitor on vacation?

If you’re like me, you want your little one to be safe and sleep well, even when you’re far from home. A baby monitor lets you enjoy a cup of tea on the balcony, step out into the hallway to make a call, or relax in the next room while your baby naps. Without one, you’re stuck constantly checking in or missing those precious moments of downtime. And let’s face it — baby-free moments are few and far between when you’re on the road.

What to look for in a baby monitor for travel

Where will you be staying? Hotel? Apartment? Grandma’s house? Some travel monitors require Wi-Fi, while others don’t. Make sure your setup matches your destination.

How much space (and weight) are you working with? If you’re already juggling diaper bags, a travel crib, and a stroller, the last thing you want is another clunky piece of gear. The best travel baby monitors are compact — or even better, totally virtual.

Do you need video or just audio? Depending on your parenting style and your baby’s age, this can help you decide between a basic audio monitor or a full-featured video setup.

What kind of range do you need? In an Airbnb or hotel, you probably don’t need a monitor with a mile-long range, but you do want one that can work across thick walls, elevators, or separate floors.

Will you have reliable Wi-Fi? Some baby monitors work over Wi-Fi, others use direct signal, and a few (like the Annie Baby Monitor app) can use both Wi-Fi and mobile data.

Overall Best Baby Monitor for Travelers — Annie Baby Monitor App

Without question, the Annie Baby Monitor is my go-to recommendation for travel — and actually what I use every time we’re away from home. It’s not a traditional baby monitor at all — it’s a baby monitor app that turns two phones or tablets into a fully functional baby monitor, complete with live video, two-way audio, night vision, motion and noise alerts, and more.

Yes, you read that right — no hardware required.

All you need is a phone or tablet to place near the baby and another device for yourself. And it works on iOS and Android, so you can even pair an old Android phone with your iPad if that’s what you have on hand.

What makes the Annie Baby Monitor app such a game-changer for travel?

 • No extra gear to pack — just use the phones and tablets you already have
 • Works over Wi-Fi or mobile data, so you’re not limited by spotty hotel connections
 • Crystal-clear video and audio, even in low light
 • Includes motion and sound alerts, so you don’t have to stare at the screen
 • Two-way talk lets you soothe your baby from the other room (great when they stir!)
 • Multi-child and multi-parent support if you have more than one kiddo or caregiver

The Annie Baby Monitor app is also super secure — everything is encrypted, and no data is stored on external servers. It even works in the background, so you can still scroll Instagram or check your email while keeping an ear and eye on baby.

One thing I love is that I can use an old phone as the “baby” unit — meaning I don’t have to buy anything extra or worry about charging multiple gadgets. It’s truly a minimalist parent’s dream.

And best of all, it’s affordable. You can test it out with a 3-day free trial, and then just pay a small one-time fee (or go with a subscription if you prefer). It ends up costing less than a traditional baby monitor, and the fact that you’ll always have it with you — no matter where in the world you are — makes it 100% worth it.

Other Great Baby Monitors for Travelers

If you’re not sold on a phone-based app or just prefer to use a more traditional style monitor while traveling, there are still some solid options out there that won’t weigh you down.

HelloBaby Monitor HB65

A good budget-friendly option for travelers who want a standalone monitor that doesn’t require Wi-Fi. The HelloBaby monitor includes a camera and separate parent unit, so you don’t need to rely on an app or network connection.

Pros:

 • Works right out of the box — no setup, no Wi-Fi
 • Infrared night vision and temperature monitoring
 • Compact size and decent battery life

Cons:

 • No mobile access — you have to carry the parent unit around
 • Not ideal for larger spaces (range maxes out around 960ft)

If you’re staying in a smaller place and want a plug-and-play solution, this one’s easy to pack and even easier to use.

Infant Optics DXR-8 Pro

This is a premium choice for those who want serious functionality on the road. The DXR-8 Pro comes with interchangeable lenses, great battery life, and a secure signal that doesn’t require Wi-Fi — making it perfect for travel.

Pros:

 • Great video and sound quality
 • Optional zoom lens for better views of the crib
 • Noise reduction filters to block out background sounds

Cons:

 • On the heavier side for travel
 • Pricier than app-based options
 • Requires charging and carrying both units

If you’re traveling more long-term or want the same setup you use at home, the DXR-8 Pro might be worth the investment.

Lollipop Smart Baby Monitor

This one is more of a hybrid option. The Lollipop monitor is a super sleek, flexible camera that connects to your phone via an app, and it offers Wi-Fi-based streaming, true crying detection, and even sleep tracking.

Pros:

 • Unique design easily attaches to cribs or furniture
 • Cloud-based video and event history
 • Can be wall-mounted or freestanding

Cons:

 • Requires stable Wi-Fi (no local connection support)
 • A bit fragile for rough travel conditions
 • Needs to be plugged in, so not ideal for spontaneous setup

If you’re tech-savvy and traveling to a place with reliable internet, the Lollipop offers some pretty cool features in a stylish package.

So, what’s the best travel baby monitor for you?

Like most travel gear, the best baby monitor for travelers totally depends on your needs. If you want ultimate flexibility, minimal gear, and something you can use anywhere, my honest recommendation is the Annie Baby Monitor app. It’s versatile, affordable, and fits right into the devices you already have in your carry-on.

But if you’d rather stick with a traditional monitor and don’t mind bringing an extra device, there are still some solid choices that are compact and travel-ready.

In the end, the best baby monitor for travel is the one that helps you relax a little more on the road — and makes your travel experience just that much smoother for the whole family.

I essentially regretted my minivan almost immediately. Sure it’s super convenient but it’s not sexy. So, I surveyed 900+ moms to ask them what they decided to buy instead of a minivan. The results were narrowed down to give you lots of minivan alternatives.

Minivan Alternatives aka 3rd Row SUVs

Here’s what they either bought instead or traded from a minivan into.

Although many of the moms mentioned the Nissan Rogue, I only included vehicles with a third row or at least an optional third row. I figure if you need a car the size of a minivan it indicates you need more than five seats. All the cars on this list have 7 or 8 seats. These vehicle suggestions are in no particular order other than the first two minivan alternatives. The top two suggestions were each mentioned more than the others.

Honda Pilot
2025 Honda Pilot TrailSport

It’s unbelievably comfortable, the seats reconfigure easily. Plus, it’s loaded with a ton of features.

For moms with full hands, there is a hands-free power tailgate. It’s got all the tech most would want like a touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

The Pilot is powered by a 3.5-liter 280-horsepower V6 engine combined with a 6-speed automatic transmission and it is available in all-wheel-drive. Most importantly the Honda Sensing safety and driver-assistance features are standard on all trim levels and include a collision mitigation system with forward-collision warning, road departure mitigation, lane-keeping assist, and adaptive cruise control. Read our 2025 Honda Pilot TrailSport review.

Toyota Highlander
Tailgating with Toyota

The Toyota Highlander is well-appointed SUV. They have quite a few versions including a hybrid. Here’s a look at the XSE version.

Fun Fact: You can fit two kayaks on top of the Highlander.

Volvo XC 90
Volvo XC90

It was no surprise to me that the Volvo XC90 made the list. If I could afford it, this is the minivan alternative I would buy. I got to test it one year at the Texas Truck Rodeo and it was fabulous.

One mom said, “I feel so secure when my teens ask to take the car out after dark. It’s literally like a tank!”.

I like the way the seats are built they kind of hug your body. It seats 7, is AWD, and it’s a hybrid.

This is an expensive SUV and the starting price is $64,750 MSRP.

Volkswagen Atlas: Best Minivan Alternative if you need a lot of space
Volkswagen Atlas

The Volkswagen Atlas SUV is another one of my personal favorites. It has one of the most spacious third-rows available and can comfortably sit an adult. How do I know this? I was put back in the third row of an Atlas on a press trip once. I was irritated for a minute and then realized it was no big deal because of all of the space.

 • Base-Price Range: $32,575-$48,245
 • Available in a 3.6L V-6 (276 hp, 266 lb-ft)
 • Fuel Economy 16 city/ 23 hwy/ 21 combined
 • Max Towing Capacity: 5,000 pounds

Kia Sorento
Kia Sorento Hybrid

The Kia Sorrento is laid out well and the price is more reasonable than some of the others. We spent a week in this vehicle a few years ago and we enjoyed it thoroughly. It’s extremely comfortable and well-outfitted if you get the higher trim levels. These start out at $29,390 but the base model is too basic for almost everyone. You will definitely have to go up at least one trim level.

Subaru Ascent
2022 Subaru Ascent

The Subaru Ascent is the largest SUV Subaru makes so if you need that third row and want a Subaru, it’s this one. It only comes only in AWD which is handy.

The Ascent has comfortable seats, it’s good-looking, and you can get a Harman Kardon stereo in it.

It provides a smooth ride, yet precise handling. The third-row seat is tight.

 • Price Range: $33,345-$46,495
 • Engine: 2.4L turbo H-4 (260 hp, 277 lb-ft)
 • Fuel Economy: 20-21 city/26-27 hwy/22-23 combined mpg
 • Max Towing Capacity: 5,000 pounds

Mazda CX-9
Mazda CX-9

Mazda’s three-row SUV has been put onto the Top Safety Pick + list meaning it’s super safe. It is outfitted with Mazda’s i-ACTIVSENSE system which includes advanced smart city brake support with pedestrian detection, smart brake assist with collision warning, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, lane departure warning with lane-keeping assist, high-beam headlight assist, an adaptive front lighting system, and traffic-sign recognition.

One mom said it was, “Sporty and zippy with three rows of seating.”

 • Price Range: $35,335-$48,475
 • Engine: 2.5L turbo I-4 (250 hp, 320 lb-ft)
 • Fuel Economy: 20-22 city/26-28 hwy/23-24 combined mpg
 • Max Towing Capacity: 3,500 pounds

Hyundai Palisade
Hyundai Palisade

Hyundai is just knocking it out of the park lately and that includes the Palisade. It’s one of the more reasonably priced SUVs which makes it automatically a favorite among Moms. Both the second row and third row have optional captain chairs and are operated at the push of a button and fold flat. Check current Palisade options and prices.

 • Price Range: $33,710-$48,935
 • Engine: 3.8L V-6 (291 hp, 262 lb-ft)
 • Fuel Economy: 19 city/24-26 hwy/21-22 combined mpg
 • Max Towing Capacity: 5,000 pounds

Jeep Grand Cherokee L
Jeep Grand Cherokee L

One of the most popular SUVS of all time is the Jeep Grand Cherokee so it’s no surprise that so many moms recommended it now that it’s got a third-row option bumping it up to six seats. It’s got 4wd off-road capability in a nicer-looking package.

 • Prices start out at $36,995
 • Towing capacity is 6,200 lbs
 • 19 city and 26 highway MPG.

Nissan Pathfinder
Nissan Pathfinder

My own mother loved her Nissan so I was not surprised to see this one make the list. The Pathfinder is roomy and the second row was designed with some seat-folding tech that makes accessing the third row a little easier.

 • Price Range: $33,075-$46,400
 • Engins: 3.5L V-6 (284 hp, 259 lb-ft)
 • Fuel Economy: 19-20 city/26-27 hwy/21-23 combined mpg
 • Max Towing Capacity: 6,000 pounds

Ford Explorer
Ford Explorer

The Explorer is basically the best-selling SUV of all time. (Even I used to have one of these.) The new versions are built on an all-new rear-wheel-drive flexible architecture for an improved ride, handling, and capability. The standard engine is a 2.3-liter EcoBoost 4-cylinder unit producing 300 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque. Again if you get a new one there’s better safety on them, the Co-Pilot360. This includes automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, cross-traffic alert, lane-keeping assist, post-impact braking, and a rearview camera with a lens washer. The lens washer is a lifesaver when driving through dirty snow.

Moms love the push buttons for 2nd and 3rd row that bring them up or down. Plus, the 3rd row stows completely flat. When the 2nd row folds it is level with the 3rd row to make it all flat!

 • Price Range: $33,470-$55,725
 • Engines: 2.3L turbo I-4 (300 hp, 310 lb-ft); 3.0L turbo V-6 (365-400 hp, 380-415 lb-ft); 3.3L V-6 hybrid (318 hp, 332 lb-ft)
 • Fuel Economy: 16-27 city/23-28 hwy/19-27 combined mpg
 • Max Towing Capacity: 5,600 pounds

Kia Telluride
Kia Telluride

Kia Telluride is built in America and it has 3rd-row seats that go flat. The middle seats can be a bench or captain’s chairs. It’s a gorgeous car and very affordable. There’s been a waitlist to get one of these for a while now thanks to the value: tons of features versus the price.

Moms seem to really appreciate the Telluride price ($33,415-$43,715) and the features.

 • Engine: 3.8L V-6 (291 hp, 262 lb-ft)
 • Fuel Economy: 19-20 city/24-26 hwy/21-23 combined mpg
 • Max Towing Capacity: 5,000 pounds

Cadillac XT6: Best Bougie Minivan Alternative
Cadillac XT6 a luxury minivan alternative

One mom with teens said, “Never would have thought to be driving a Cadillac, but it has everything we need. Space for future college trips, plenty of room with a movable reclining second row. And USABLE with ample leg-room third row.”

The XT6 is a 3-row luxury SUV with the option of having captain’s chairs on the second row. It’s so safe it’s on the Top Safety Pick+ list. The XT6 has a distinct look thanks to its great big grille flanked and headlights of your choice. Safety features include forward collision alert, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, front, and rear park assist, rear cross-traffic alert, and a rearview camera with remote wash. The price starts out at $48,595.

GMC Acadia
GMC Acadia

The GMC Acadia is the luxury version of the Chevrolet Traverse, in that they both share GM’s C1 platform. It’s fairly spacious and great for hauling cargo thanks to the fold-flat second-row seats. It can go from zero to 60 mph in 7 seconds making it ideal for those moms with a lead foot. It has a 3rd-row option available.

 • Price Range: $34,800 – $49,495
 • Engines: 2.0L turbo I-4 (230 hp, 258 lb-ft); 2.5L I-4 (193 hp, 188 lb-ft); 3.6L V-6 (310 hp, 271 lb-ft)
 • Fuel Economy: 19-22 city/26-29 hwy/21-25 combined mpg
 • Max Towing Capacity: 4,000 pounds

Lincoln Navigator
Lincoln Navigator

Lincoln Navigator has an optional 30-way adjustable, massaging front seat which several moms highly recommended. Moms also love being able to use the phones as keys. The new models have more standard safety tech, a 20-speaker Revel audio system, and a powered 3rd now.

 • Price Range: $76,705 – $100,000
 • Engine: 3.5L twin-turbo V-6, 450 hp, 510 lb-ft
 • Fuel Economy: 16 city/20-22 hwy/17-18 combined mpg
 • Max Towing Capacity: 8,700 lb

Ford Expedition
Ford Expedition

I almost didn’t include this one because it’s what my ex drives and he is a douche bag, but since most people that drive them are not, here ya go! Many moms recommended the Ford Expedition and these are the reasons why. The third row is easy to deal with thanks to a power push button. It has a remote start, a massive sunroof, removable seats, and lots of extra space.

Ford Expedition has a powerful twin-turbo EcoBoost V-6 and an easy-to-use infotainment interface.

 • Prices start at $49,625
 • Towing capacity of 5,900 to 6,000 lbs

Acura MDX
Acura MDX

The Acura MDX starts out at $47,200 and as a 3rd row. It can seat six and if needed seat seven, all the rows go flat as well. It has a large back area for those that need a lot of space. It has a V6 engine and gets decent gas mileage, 19 city / 26 highway.

Dodge Durango: Best Minivan Alternative if You’d Rather be in a Sports Car
2019 Dodge Durango SRT

The Dodge Durango is a fantastic choice if you want a powerful SUV. It comes in several trim levels including two with intense power. The middle row is your choice of a bench or captain chairs. I recommend getting the captain chairs.

I recently got time in the new 2021 Hellcat version. Here it is:

2021 Dodge Durango SRT Hellcat

The 2021 Durango SRT Hellcat

 • The Durango SRT Hellcat features the supercharged 6.2-liter HEMI® V-8 with 710 horsepower and 645 lb.-ft. of torque.
 • 0-60 mph in 3.5 seconds
 • NHRA-certified quarter-mile time of 11.5 seconds • Top speed of 180 mph

 • MPG: 12 city/17 hwy/13 combine

Fun Fact: No SUV in the world can tow more or carry more with a faster quarter-mile time than the Durango SRT Hellcat.

Volkswagen Tiguan
19 Minivan Alternatives

MSRP starting at: $80,995 – MSR as pictured: $90,315. The other versions are much, much cheaper. This is the most expensive one they make.

Volkswagen Tiguan

The newer Volkswagen Tiguans have a FWD version with a 3rd row. This is perfect for families that occasionally need a third row. The 3rd row is tight and basically just for kids, but it’s better than not having one when you need one!

 • 23 mpg in city driving, 30 mpg on the highway -great lumbar support
 • Touchscreen with Apple CarPlay® & Android Auto™

Minivan Alternatives FAQs

What is the most affordable 3-row SUV alternative to a minivan?

The Volkswagen Tiguan is the most budget-friendly option with a starting price around $26,000. It offers a third row that works well for occasional use, especially for children. The Kia Sorento is another excellent value starting at $29,390, offering more standard features and a more spacious third row for slightly more money.

Which minivan alternative has the most spacious third row for adults?

The Volkswagen Atlas is renowned for having one of the most spacious third rows among midsize SUVs, comfortably accommodating adults even on longer trips. The Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator also offer exceptionally roomy third rows since they are full-size SUVs, but they come with a higher price tag and larger overall footprint.

Are there any hybrid or electric options among these minivan alternatives?

Yes, several models offer hybrid powertrains including the Toyota Highlander Hybrid, Volvo XC90 Hybrid, Ford Explorer Hybrid, and Kia Sorento Hybrid. The Kia Sorento Hybrid delivers impressive fuel economy with 37 combined MPG. These hybrid options provide better fuel efficiency while maintaining the space and utility families need, though they typically cost more upfront than their gas-only counterparts.

Which 3-row SUV is best for families who need serious towing capacity?

The Ford Expedition leads the pack with up to 9,300 pounds of towing capacity, making it ideal for hauling boats, campers, or large trailers. The Lincoln Navigator and Dodge Durango also excel with 8,700-pound capacities each. If you need substantial towing but want to stay under $40,000, the Dodge Durango base models offer exceptional value.

How does third-row access compare between these SUVs and minivans?

While minivans still reign supreme for third-row access with sliding doors, many modern SUVs have significantly improved. Models like the Ford Explorer and Hyundai Palisade feature power-folding second-row seats activated by push buttons. The Nissan Pathfinder has innovative seat-folding technology that makes third-row access easier. Captain’s chairs in the second row, available in most of these SUVs, also create a center aisle for easier access compared to bench seats.

Which luxury minivan alternative offers the best value for the money?

The Kia Telluride and Hyundai Palisade consistently rank as the best value luxury alternatives, offering premium features, materials, and technology at prices starting around $33,000 to $34,000. Both have earned numerous awards for delivering near-luxury experiences at mainstream prices. They include standard features that cost thousands more in competing vehicles and come with excellent warranties.

What safety features should I look for when choosing a minivan alternative?

Look for SUVs with comprehensive driver-assistance suites like Honda Sensing, Toyota Safety Sense, or Ford Co-Pilot360. Key features include automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and lane-keeping assist. The Mazda CX-9, Cadillac XT6, and Volvo XC90 have earned Top Safety Pick+ ratings from the IIHS, representing the highest safety standards.

Can I fit three car seats across the second row in these SUVs?

This varies by model, but generally, it’s challenging to fit three car seats across in most midsize SUVs. The Volkswagen Atlas, Subaru Ascent, and Ford Expedition have wider second rows that better accommodate three-across seating. If you need to install three car seats, consider models with captain’s chairs in the second row and a third row that can accommodate a car seat, or opt for vehicles specifically designed with wider bench seats.

Which minivan alternative is best for off-road or winter driving?

The Jeep Grand Cherokee L offers the best off-road capability with its legendary 4WD system and trail-rated options. The Subaru Ascent comes standard with all-wheel drive and Subaru’s renowned AWD technology, making it excellent for winter conditions. The Volvo XC90 also provides confident all-weather driving with its AWD system and advanced traction control, plus it feels especially stable and secure in challenging conditions.

How does cargo space in these SUVs compare to minivans?

Most minivans still offer more total cargo volume than midsize SUVs, especially behind the first row. However, full-size SUVs like the Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator provide comparable or even greater cargo space. The key difference is configuration flexibility—minivans typically have Stow ‘n Go seating or completely removable seats, while SUVs usually have folding seats that don’t quite create the same flat floor. The Volkswagen Atlas and Hyundai Palisade offer some of the best cargo space among midsize SUVs with flat-folding seats.

So there you have it, all our favorite minivan alternatives. Have you bought an SUV instead of a minivan? If so tell us what you bought and why in the comments below.

Have you just finished a great book and now you don’t know what book to read next? Try one of the best books listed below. Each will keep you reading in a different way. No matter whether you like mysteries, true stories, the best inspirational books or fiction that could be true, there is something for you listed below. So, pick a book, and curl up and enjoy!

A Million Little Pieces by James Frey

A Million Little Pieces

After all the controversy surrounding this book, it still makes a great read for adults, in my opinion especially if you’ve had to deal with someone dealing with addiction. Whether it is fiction or not doesn’t matter because either way you can appreciate the candid nature of the story. If this book is nonfiction then the reader should appreciate how truthful Frey is with his audience.

If the book is fiction, then the reader can appreciate the way that Frey paints his characters and creates a main character that the reader can become attached to. The best part of this book is the imperfection of the story.

If you hate reading those books with predictable twists and turns and an ending you can see coming halfway through the book then you will be able to appreciate this book that is as unpredictable in nature as its main character. Order on Amazon.

She’s Come Undone by Wally Lamb

Shes Come Undone by Wally Lamb

The most amazing quality of this book is the fact that its main character is a woman, and she is written with such amazing insight, and she is also written by a man. It is so hard to remember as you are reading the book that this is a man’s take on a woman. This book is also amazing because of the way that it takes you from adolescence to adulthood in the mind of a main character who has suffered almost every thinkable travesty, yet she remains a fighter, and you find yourself rooting for her. Order on Amazon.

Atticus by Ron Hansen

Atticus by Ron Hansen

This book reads like a murder mystery with a little extra depth in the characters. Atticus is a rancher who travels to Mexico to retrieve the body of his younger son who dies as a result of suicide. However, when Atticus gets there he finds himself suspecting that his son died at the hands of another person.

Throughout the whole book you can’t help but feel for Atticus’ pain and mental struggles as the book slowly reveals more about his wife who died in a car accident where his younger son was driving, and his older son who is the successful one.

This book pulls you right through the pages with all the twists, turns, and revelations that Atticus goes through while trying to find out what really happened to his son. Order on Amazon.

The Rapture of Canaan by Sheri Reynolds

The Rapture of Canaan by Sheri Reynolds

This book is an amazing look into the life of Ninah, a member of the Church of Fire and Brimstone and God’s Almighty Baptizing Wind. If you think the name of the church is a lot to handle, wait until you find out about some of the quirky characteristics of the church.

You’ll find yourself relating to Ninah as she struggles to follow those lessons that she has been taught in the church since she was little against her changing adolescent body–and mind. Order on Amazon.

Nickel and Dimed: On (Not) Getting by in America by Barbara Ehrenreich

Nickel and Dimed On Not Getting by in America by Barbara Ehrenreich

This book is a searing look into the life of the struggling unskilled laborers. The author, investigative reporter Barbara Ehrenreich, sets off on her journey through three cities and many different jobs believing that she will be able to discover a secret to living off the wages of unskilled jobs, but soon discovers that not only is there no secret to be found, but that it is near impossible to live off the wages of only one job.

Throughout this book the reader can appreciate the bonds that Barbara creates with her coworkers at the various jobs she holds, and the way that she empathizes with each of their situations. Order on Amazon.

Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen

Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen

Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, is a good read for a literary mind, describing plenty of interesting characters and set in a story that is true to life.

Jane Austenís Pride and Prejudice, her most popular classic novel, is a delightful read for an avid literary mind. Austenís understanding of culture in her time period, and her understanding of people come through in her character development and plot structure. Pride and Prejudice is a great example of classic 19th century literature that although is dated back to the Regency Period, is timeless in the way it is written.

Pride and Prejudice has a simple plot line, describing everyday events with a bit of mischief woven into it. Elizabeth Bennet meets Mr. Darcy at a party, shortly after the Bennets befriend Mr. Bingley. Propriety tells her to be civil to Mr. Darcy although she does not like him, but propriety also keeps them both from fully acknowledging their thoughts throughout the novel.

Living in a society where propriety is valued and must be observed at least on the surface, Elizabethís silly younger sisters become scandalous and therefore taint the entire family by association. Part of the beauty of the story, however, is that Elizabeth and Jane Bennet are not held in contempt because of their sisters, but each one stands alone as her own person and is highly regarded.

Although the story may be fairly simple, Austenís writing brings an excitement to it, and the reader is drawn in by the characterization. Jane Austen is a very skilled in creating characters that are sensible, characters that are ridiculous, that are smart, proud, naive or blithely ignorant, but are everyone real. Order on Amazon.

Immortal Life Of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot

Immortal Life Of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot

While most Biology 101 students know about the HeLa cell line, HeLa’s own relatives didn’t for more than 20 years. HeLa, short for Henrietta Lacks, revolutionized cell culture development in the 1950s and 1960s, the first human cells to grow in a laboratory without dying shortly after being placed in a cell culture medium. Used to help develop the polio vaccine, study various cancers, develop cancer treatments and investigate countless other scientific and medical puzzles, the story of the woman behind the HeLa cells, and her family, is told by Rebecca Skloot in The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks.

The book is as much about Skloot’s journey to research and write about Henrietta Lacks as it is about the subject. A compelling work of non-fiction, meticulously researched over the course of a decade, Skloot’s creative prose is limited; her adherence to documented dialogue and verifiable fact is admirable in this work of science history.

The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks is hard to categorize. It is a work of science history, but also a biography of Henrietta Lacks and her family. It is a biography of the Lacks family, but also a travel account of Skloot’s various research trips around the country, centered largely in Maryland. It is a travel account, but also a work of meta non-fiction, much like Charlie Kaufman’s movie “Adaptation”. Skloot is writing about her attempts to write about the HeLa cell line, and along the way this fascinating cast of characters take her in places she never imagined when she started. Order on Amazon.

Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail by Cheryl Strayed

Wild From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail by Cheryl Strayed

Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail is a powerful memoir and remarkable story written by Cheryl Strayed that takes readers on a transformative journey of self-discovery and personal growth. The new book recounts Cheryl’s bold decision to embark on a three-month solo hike along the Pacific Crest Trail in the United States (PCT), which spans over 1,100 miles. I hated this book but my entire book club loved it.

The story begins with Cheryl’s life at an all-time low. After the sudden death of her mother and the subsequent breakdown of her marriage, Cheryl finds herself lost and struggling to find meaning and purpose in her life and her own experiences. In an impulsive moment, she decides to embark on an adventure that will push her to her physical and emotional limits.

As Cheryl set foot on the PCT, she faced numerous challenges and obstacles. From blistered feet and heavy backpacks to encounters with rattlesnakes and extreme weather conditions, Cheryl’s determination was constantly tested. Along the way, she met fellow hikers who offered advice, friendship, and occasional respite from her solitude.

While the physical journey was grueling, it was Cheryl’s inner journey that truly captivated readers. As she hiked through the wilderness, she reflected on her past, confronting her demons and making peace with her mistakes. Through her encounters with fellow hikers and the rugged beauty of nature, Cheryl discovered a renewed sense of self and a deep connection to the world around her.

Cheryl’s raw and honest own words allows readers to empathize with her as she navigates the challenges of the trail and her own personal struggles. Throughout the story, she weaves in memories of her mother, whose presence lingers with her throughout the journey.

By the end of her hike, Cheryl emerges as a changed woman. She finds strength and clarity, and most importantly, she learns to forgive herself and embrace the person she has become. “Wild” is a testament and the perfect read to the power of nature’s healing and the resilience of the human spirit on its own terms. Best Fantasy Books for Women

Fantasy is an amazing genre, and it’s no secret that women encounter different things in life than men. It’s naive to interpret equality in terms of sameness, but it’s also somewhat of a stretch to claim “fantasy books for females” are of a distinct category. Although some may be more aimed towards the “stereotype” of what it means to be a women, the best “fantasy” books for women are generally the same as for men.

After all, an amazing fantasy story is an amazing fantasy good book. Still, there are authors who give more respect to the realities in life, and one such reality is that women are commonplace. Too frequently, women’s issues are ignored in fantasy, and it’s commonplace to see a disturbing lack of female characters. In my recommendations, I am choosing works of which I am familiar, but they are also those which give more respect to the female readership. In no particular order:

The Wheel of Time Series by Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson

Wheel of Time Books

Robert Jordan’s series presents women not only as villains, but as legitimate heroines. I will warn you that there are some relationships that may cause other feminists to stop and stare, but I personally found that they were fairly acceptable when considered in context.

Alongside dealing with relationships from both male and female perspectives, the series deals with issues relevant solely to women, the notion of sisterhood, and other things. I suspect Jordan consulted his wife a great deal, or he is far more insightful than I already thought. Available on Amazon.

Harry Potter Series by J.K. Rowling

Harry Potter Series by J.K. Rowling

As you might notice, I like to read novels in the “series” format. Apparently “series” is singular and plural, and I am now quite angry about that. Nonetheless, I have some book recommending to do.

When it comes to Harry Potter, there are tons of characters both male and female and more plot and story than in many fantasy texts (less reliant on bedazzling men and pumping up testosterone, perhaps). Perhaps most significantly, it’s written by a women. It’s difficult to deny that a female writer who add a certain amount of insight that speaks to women similar to how male writers may do the same for men. Available on Amazon.

The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien

The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien

This has a disturbingly low amount of female characters, is directed primarily towards male children, and there isn’t much of anything to do with promoting feminism contained therein.

That said, I had to back up my claim regarding the “best being for all genders” by throwing in something by Tolkien. Maybe it’s because the book is easier to read and I’m lazy, but this is my favorite of his works. It’s charming, unique, and an amazing piece of fantasy. Buy on Amazon.

The War of the Spider Queen Series

The War of the Spider Queen Series

Now if I was literally choosing solely the best fantasy books, I would not select these. They are quite good, but I’ve chosen them to represent something that gives more representation to women. It’s a matriarchal society of dark elves getting into adventures, and almost everyone has a sinister personality.

There is a lot of cultural depth, and as a man, the presence of a matriarchy was a frustrating taste of sexism. Perhaps my frustrating will create an opposite effect of women smirking and enjoy vicariously ruling through the female characters in the text. I do enjoy Salvatore’s other stuff on drow far more, but it’s not a great example of a text with equal gender representation, in my opinion. Order on Amazon.

Frankenstein by Mary Shelley

Frankenstein by Mary Shelley

I’m not a huge fan of this myself, but it’s not terrible by any means. It’s argued about whether to classify her as fantasy, but there is an overlap between fantasy and science fiction – plus it has a monster. It’s one of the earliest and more influential texts in the history of science fiction, and it’s written by one of the most successful female writers in what one might classify as “the time before women writers were common” as I am tongue-tied on the proper term. She also is the daughter of Mary Wollstonecraft, interestingly enough, and she was a famous feminist philosopher. So unsurprisingly, you should see so better depictions of the female sex.

Overall, there are many great fantasy books out there, and even if the author is female, it doesn’t guarantee it will speak to women. It might be a terrible book. Furthermore, I’m skeptical about how much significance gender has on the quality and enjoyment of most books in the fantasy genre, but I still favor those with more equal character distributions slightly. It’s just not something I think is overly significant when considering a fantasy book. Just go for the greats, as I see it. Order on Amazon.
