We know Athens is ripe with historical sites and archaeological wonders, but the city is also packed with world class bars and restaurants serving traditional and not-so-traditional food and drinks. Here’s a compact guide to enjoying a delicious time in Athens’ center.

Hotel Grande Bretagne

Hotel Grande Bretagne Athens

Our base of operations for our three-day stay in Athens was the truly magical and historic Hotel Grand Bretagne. This hotel has been in continuous operation for over 150 years and was renovated in 2003. It sits regally on central Syntagma Square, where you can watch the ritual changing of the guards.  My corner room offered views of the Parthenon and the pedestrians briskly flowing from the metro station below, and the fresh roses on my nightstand were a most elegant touch.

Athens is so walkable, I never got to experience what locals tell me is a safe, easy to navigate metro system. From the Grand Bretagne, I was able to cover a lot of ground on foot, including meeting my Acropolis tour group and walking to all the bars and restaurants I enjoyed.

Alexander’s:  A Hotel Bar that’s a Contemporary Classic

Alexander's Bar

You don’t even need to leave the hotel for a magnificent bar experience. Alexander’s, just off the Grand Bretagne lobby. From your perch at the massive marble bar, you can gaze at the detailed 18th century tapestry hanging behind as you ponder the list of classic cocktails, rare cognacs and single malts. In keeping with the old school feel, the “secret” Atrium of Alexander’s Lounge, located in the interior garden with no direct access to the street, you’ll find a Cigar Lounge complete with leather couches and the outdoor cafe, lush with olive trees and flowering bushes and complete serenity.

Acropolis Dusk GB Roof Garden (1)

On the 8th floor, the GB Roof Garden is where you can take your lavish breakfast each day, or have drinks or dinner with a phenomenal view of the acropolis floating above the city. Local wine is definitely a thing–we enjoyed an informative rooftop tasting of elegant Greek wine varieties, and a visit to the wine library on the mezzanine was part of our hotel tour.

Food Shopping Paradise

Bougatsadiko
Bougatsadiko | Photo by Lisa Futterman

The streets of the center are lined with storefronts, their windows and doorsteps packed with tempting local delicacies like olives, pastries, and spices. Start your exploration at Varvakios Agora, the Athens Central Market, open since 1884, whose rustic stalls include butchers, green grocers,  and fishmongers of course, plus vendors who sell the freshest nuts, dried fruits, and eggs of every stripe, from goose to quail. Next, poke around Evripidou Street to find more shoppable gastronomic treats.

Stop at the historic Mokka café on the edge of the market for the total Greek coffee experience accompanied by a rainbow of spoon fruits, in a bustling atmosphere. The process, where the copper coffee pot brews gently in hot sand, takes time, so if you prefer a quick espresso freddo, the frothy shaken iced coffee drink enjoyed by just about everyone, drop in to one of the numerous modern shops that serve them.

Plaka a lively neighborhood in Athens

Visit Malotira, a  deli in Plaka, for an informative olive oil tasting, and browse their highly curated selection of small production jams, olives, sauces, cookies, and honeys to take home.

Stani, near Omonias Square, is an absolute must stop for a simple dish of sheep milk yogurt topped with walnuts and honey. Here you can also try the cinnamon dusted rice pudding, the loukoumades (honey soaked doughnuts), and Galaktoboureko, a traditional flaky custard-filled pie, but, I insist, don’t skip the sheep yogurt.

In Psirri, pop in at family run Bougatsadiko Thessaloniki to watch the bakers spin, stretch, and layer delicate filo dough into delicious bougatsa filled with sweet semolina custard or savory spinach and cheese. The cozy cafe gets crowded, so it’s often best to get your pies to go.

Daphnis and Chloe has a gorgeous storefront retail studio where you can learn about their collection of culinary herbs, spices, and mountain teas, all indigenous to Greece. Try the whole leaf oregano, hand harvested at small organic farms and carefully dried to produce an unmatchable flavor, or pick up some beautifully packaged kitchen gift sets.

Nearby Dining and Drinking: Ouzo, Greek Wine, Cocktails, Grilled Meats, and the Freshest Seafood

Agioi Theodoro
Agioi Theodoro | Photo by Lisa Futterman

Within Athens center, there are dozens of eateries and drinkeries just beyond the historic walls of the Grand Bretagne.

I highly recommend a tapas style lunch at Dopios, a charming modern café just a ten minute walk from Hotel Grand Bretagne, behind the 11th century Byzantine church of Agioi Theodoros. The menu is packed with local products and deliciously twisted typical dishes. Try the Maniatiki, a potato salad studded with olives, orange segments and avocado, the grilled Cyprus goat milk halloumi cheese, and a glass of the house rosé made from the xinomavro grape.

Manári Taverna
Manári Taverna | Photo by Lisa Futterman

For dinner close by, make a reservation at the boisterous new Manári Taverna for meats grilled over an open fire. I sat at the counter watching the chefs stoking the flames and cooking ribs, steak and chickens to perfection. The seasonal fresh tomato salad is exceptional.

Around the corner, Clumsies has become a landmark, an award-winning all-day cocktail bar that manages to please  locals and tourists alike with their good-humored bartenders and outstanding drink list. The cocktail menu changes every day at THE BAR IN FRONT OF THE BAR, a street-side stop that offers seasonal drinks with a deep nod to sustainability–they formulate the bits and bobs into cordials and syrups in their mixology lab.

To dine more traditionally, sit outside at Ouzeri Lesvos and partake in ouzo and mezes with the locals. Aegean seafood is the focus here, like fried calamari and fresh mullet, and a wide selection of ouzo to accompany.

Wine bars are growing rapidly in popularity here, and Oinoscent is the perfect place to try some native greek varieties and international classics by the glass or the bottle, along with a menu of fresh, contemporary plates designed to pair perfectly.

The Hotel Grand Bretagne allows guests to receive incredible hospitality in the serenity of the spa, the gorgeous bars, lounges, and eateries, and the plush rooms within, before spilling out onto the streets of Athens center for days and nights of shopping, dining, and exploring the myths and magic of the city at their doorstep, before heading to their next Greek destination.

I’ve spent a lot of time galavanting around the globe with my daughter Eden, testing the limits of her patience and mine. And you know what? Traveling with your daughter is a special kind of magic—a magical reminder that you’re not as cool as you thought, but also a chance to bond in ways you never imagined.

Here’s my guide to the 13 best mother-daughter trips around the world. These are the spots where you’ll either create unforgettable memories…or at least have a hilarious story to tell about that one time Mom “ruined everything.”

1. Panama City, Panama

mother daughter Panama Trip (1)

Who knew Panama was more than a hat? It’s like the underrated kid at the travel playground who’s cooler than you thought. Panama City offers a mix of history, adventure, and shopping. The Casco Viejo district is beyond Instagram-worthy, and the Panama Canal is an engineering wonder you will find fascinating.

  • Stay: Bristol Panama
  • Eat: Fonda Lo Que Hay – Local street food in a laid-back spot, perfect for moms who want to pretend they’re still cool.
  • Do: Day trip to the San Blas Islands for swimming, and snorkeling.

Highlight: Head out to the San Blas Islands for pristine beaches and snorkeling. Don’t worry, it’s chill enough that even your moody teenager will approve. Better yet, plan to stay at the beach part of your time in the country. We loved Decameron Panama.

2. New York City, USA

Things to do in NYC with teenagers (1)

Ah, NYC—the place where dreams come true, and so do overpriced food trucks. The beauty of a New York City mother-daughter trip is that there’s something for both of you, whether shopping in SoHo or you’re reliving your 90s obsession with “Friends” at the famous apartment building in Greenwich Village. Don’t forget Broadway, where you can attempt to pass off theater as culture…until she asks why Harry Styles isn’t starring in Wicked.

  • Stay: The Plaza Hotel – Classic, iconic, and expensive. But come on, it’s The Plaza!
  • Eat: Serendipity 3 – Famous for its frozen hot chocolate, which will definitely end up all over her Instagram.
  • Do: Go to Broadway. Whether it’s Wicked or Hamilton, there’s something to make both of you feel cultured.

Highlight: Afternoon tea at The Plaza Hotel.

3. Danube River Cruise, Europe

I mean, if you’re going to travel with your daughter, why not do it in style? Cruising down the Danube River will make you both feel fancy, like you’re in a Bond movie, but with more castles and fewer evil villains. The best part? No flights between countries—just leisurely floating through the heart of Europe, where each stop is its own fairytale town.

  • Stay: Onboard with AmaWaterways – Luxury cruising at its finest, with stops in cities like Budapest and Vienna.
  • Eat: Lunch on the ship is often local specialties, but in Vienna, try Figlmüller for some massive schnitzel.
  • Do: Explore Budapest’s Thermal Baths. Soak in the mineral-rich waters and pretend you’re healing from all the mom-stress.

Highlight: Exploring Budapest together and pretending you’re both royalty at the Buda Castle. Eden may pretend not to care, but we all know she secretly feels like a queen.

4. Tokyo, Japan

Tokyo is where tradition meets tech, which is basically what raising a teenager feels like. Start in Harajuku for quirky fashion (and plenty of eye-rolling from your daughter), then head to a tea ceremony to confuse her even more. It’s fast-paced, fun, and a bit chaotic—just like motherhood.

  • Stay: Park Hyatt Tokyo – Feel like Scarlett Johansson in Lost in Translation for a second.
  • Do: Explore Harajuku for quirky street fashion and a peek into Japan’s pop culture. It’s Eden’s dream; your fashion nightmare.

Highlight: Hitting up a themed café together. Whether it’s cats, robots, or even ninjas, Tokyo’s got a weird café for everyone. Pro tip: Let your daughter pick, so you don’t seem like the ultimate buzzkill.

5. Paris, France

Paris

Yes, it’s cliché, but it’s Paris. If there’s anywhere you want to take your daughter before she grows up and starts telling people she raised herself, it’s here. Share croissants, attempt to discuss art at the Louvre, and take a million selfies under the Eiffel Tower.

  • Stay: Le Meurice – Right across from the Louvre, so she can take all the selfies while you admire the art.
  • Eat: Angelina for the best hot chocolate in the city. Trust me, it’s so rich it’s basically a meal.
  • Do: Take a walking tour of Montmartre, the artsy neighborhood where you can pretend you’re both effortlessly chic.

Highlight: A mother-daughter shopping spree on the Champs-Élysées.

6. Santorini, Greece

mother daughter Santorini trip

Santorini looks like someone dipped a postcard in real life. The white-washed buildings and crystal-clear waters make it the perfect place for bonding. Plus, the sunsets? Let’s just say even your too-cool-for-school daughter might drop the sarcasm for a minute.

  • Stay: Canaves Oia Hotel – Luxury cave-style rooms with views that scream “I’m better than you” to all your friends back home.
  • Eat: Lotza- Seaside dining.
  • Do: Sunset sailing tour. Bond on a boat while pretending you’re starring in Mamma Mia.

Highlight: An evening spent lounging in Oia, sipping on mocktails (or real ones for you) while watching the sun dip into the Aegean Sea. Mother-daughter perfection.

7. Reykjavik, Iceland

Iceland

For the adventurous duo who isn’t afraid of a little cold, Iceland is a win. You can bond over the otherworldly landscapes—waterfalls, glaciers, geysers—and the fact that neither of you knew exactly where Iceland was before booking the trip. Plus, the Blue Lagoon will make her spa-worthy Instagram dreams come true.

  • Stay: ION Adventure Hotel – This eco-luxury hotel is close to all the natural wonders you want to explore.
  • Eat: Grillmarkaðurinn – A trendy spot with local flavors like reindeer, puffin, and even whale (but maybe just stick with the salmon).
  • Do: Northern Lights. Sure, you’ll probably freeze, but if you spot them, it’s worth the cold shoulder from your daughter.

Highlight: Chasing the Northern Lights. Even if you don’t catch them, you’ll still get major points for effort.

8. Lisbon, Portugal

Lisbon Trolley

Lisbon is a vibrant, colorful, and packed coastal city with history that somehow feels cool even to teenagers. Wander through the maze-like streets of Alfama, snack on pastéis de nata (custard tarts that are worth the sugar rush), and take tram rides like you’re in a Wes Anderson film.

  • Stay: Bairro Alto Hotel – Stay in the heart of Lisbon’s artsy district.
  • Eat: Time Out Market – A food hall with tons of stalls serving everything from seafood to pastries.
  • Do: Take a day trip to Sintra to explore the magical palaces and feel like you’ve stepped into a fairytale.

Highlight: A day trip to Sintra, where you can explore magical palaces and forests, aka the perfect backdrop for rolling your eyes at each other.

9. Bali, Indonesia

Bali Budget Friendly Honeymoon Destinations

If your ideal mother-daughter trip involves beaches, spas, and a bit of yoga to keep the Zen vibes going (ha, sure), then Bali is your go-to. It’s laid-back and luxurious, with plenty of spots to explore—think temples, waterfalls, and rice terraces that look like they came straight out of a screensaver.

  • Stay: Four Seasons Sayan – Gorgeous villas surrounded by rice fields and jungle.
  • Eat: Locavore – A high-end dining experience in Ubud that’s as Instagrammable as it is delicious.
  • Do: Take a yoga class together and then laugh about how inflexible you are afterward.

Highlight: A traditional Balinese massage at a luxe spa.

10. Edinburgh, Scotland

Scott Monument Edinburgh

If you both love history, castles, and the moody weather that makes cozying up in a pub sound just right, Edinburgh should be on your list. Explore the winding streets, visit the famous Edinburgh Castle, and soak in the old-world charm that’ll have both of you wishing you lived in a Harry Potter novel (spoiler: J.K. Rowling wrote a lot of it here!).

  • Stay: The Balmoral Hotel – A luxurious hotel where J.K. Rowling finished writing Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. I mean, if that’s not cool, what is?
  • Eat: The Witchery by the Castle – A super atmospheric restaurant with gothic vibes right next to the castle. Eden will either find it totally cool or totally creepy (and maybe both).
  • Do: Climb Arthur’s Seat for panoramic views of the city. It’s an easy enough hike, but Eden will probably still find a reason to call it torture halfway up.

Highlight: Ghost tours at night. Because nothing bonds a mother and daughter like mutually scaring the life out of each other. There are signs for free ghost tours that you can just show up for. That’s what we did. At the end you just tip the ghost guide.

11. Cruising the Caribbean

Allure of the Seas Mother daughter trip

Let’s talk about the time Eden and I cruised the Caribbean on Royal Caribbean’s Allure of the Seas—a floating city where boredom is impossible. Whether you’re zip-lining across the ship, lounging by the pool, or indulging in way too much ice cream, cruising offers a little bit of everything for both mom and daughter. Plus, the Caribbean itself is just an unbeatable backdrop for those sun-soaked bonding moments.

  • Stay: Your floating hotel on Allure of the Seas. Trust me, the rooms are bigger than you’d expect.
  • Eat: Giovanni’s Table onboard for some top-notch Italian fare.
  • Do: Zip-lining on the ship. You’re zip-lining… on a ship. Does it get cooler than that? Eden would say yes, but she’s wrong.

Highlight: Exploring ports like Belize or Cozumel together.

12. Sri Lanka

Whitewater rafting in Sri Lanka is a top thing to do for families with teens

Sri Lanka is the perfect mix of adventure and relaxation, which makes it ideal for the mother-daughter duo who can never decide between “go, go, go” and “sit by the beach all day.” Explore the tea plantations, visit the ancient city of Sigiriya, and if you’re both feeling brave, head on a safari in one of the country’s lush national parks.

  • Stay: Cape Weligama – A luxury resort with infinity pools that scream, “Instagram me.”
  • Eat: Ministry of Crab in Colombo for the freshest seafood. Eden might not care, but you will.
  • Do: Go on a safari in Yala National Park. Leopards, elephants, and…bonding time, in the wild!

Highlight: Taking a scenic train ride from Kandy to Ella. The views of the rolling hills and tea estates will make both of you forget about Wi-Fi for at least a minute.

13. Ireland

Cliffs of Moher in Ireland
Cliffs of Moher in Ireland | Photo by Eden Shamy

If rolling green hills, castles straight out of a fairytale, and pubs with live music sound like your idea of heaven, then Ireland is the ultimate mother-daughter trip. Plus, the locals are so friendly you’ll leave convinced you have at least three new cousins.

  • Do: Cliffs of Moher – Because no trip to Ireland is complete without standing on the edge of a cliff, wind whipping your hair into a bird’s nest, and yelling “I’m the queen of the world!”
  • Stay: Castle Leslie – Because nothing says “quality mother-daughter bonding” like pretending you’re royalty while someone else brings you tea in a literal castle.
  • Eat: Chapter One in Dublin – Michelin-star dining with modern Irish cuisine. You’ll feel fancy while still pretending you know what half the ingredients are.

No matter where you go, the secret to the perfect mother-daughter trip isn’t in the destination—it’s in those moments when you look at each other, laugh, and say, “Can you believe we actually did this?” And if all else fails, there’s always shopping.

Why visit Costa Navarino, the beachfront resorts in Messinia, on the West coast of Greece’s Peloponnese? Along with gentle birdsong, fragrant ocean breezes zhuzhed with jasmine, rosemary, and lavender, and endless olive groves, you’ll find castles, local wine, and deep-rooted hospitality. You can visit King Nestor’s Cave, at gorgeous Voidokilia Beach, a sheltered crescent just a short bike ride from Navarino Dunes, where Telemachus was made welcome in Homer’s Odyssey.

All of this beauty and history lives just a 3.5-hour scenic drive from Athens, and only 45 minutes from Kalamata, a vibrant shore town with a busy international airport.

Costa Navarino History

Castle of Methoni
Castle of Methoni

Messinia’s coastal location offers endless natural beauty along with centuries of mythology and military history. Visit the Palace of Nestor, an incredibly well-preserved Mycenaean palace complex from the 13th century BC, in the hills near Pylos, and the New Castle of Pylos, which offers sweeping views of the Navarino Bay it was built to protect in 1573. Don’t miss exploring the early 13th century Methoni Castle built by the Venetians and the Bourtzi islet, a prison from the Turkish occupation.

Greek literature experts claim that Messinia was a stop on Telemachus’s journey in Homer’s Odyssey. Filmmaker Christopher Nolan agrees, and filmed scenes for his upcoming epic version of the story at Methoni Castle and Voidokilia Beach in March 2025. Myth or truth, a swim at stunning Voidokilia, also known as Oxbelly or Omega Beach for its crescent shape, should not be missed.

Costa Navarino Hotels

The Romanos Lobby
The Romanos Lobby

Costa Navarino is made up of four 5-star resort hotels on Messinia’s Ionian coast, plus 4 signature golf courses, a tennis center, an NBA basketball center, and a shopping center, the Navarino Agora. I was hosted at the Romanos Resort, a serene and lush adult hotel directly on the sea, and adjacent to the family-friendly Westin Resort

My room looked out onto a very green golf course and the sea beyond towards the setting sun. Many rooms have private pools, but I was delighted with my large, comfortable terrace.

Anazoe Spa
Anazoe Spa

At the Romanos Anazoe Spa, I indulged in a  relaxing Messinian Salt & Honey Scrub, which incorporated aromatic local herbs and made me feel as powerful as Athena after battle. Their extensive list of treatments and facilities includes hydrotherapy and Peleponnese olive oil treatments.

The distances across these resorts can be vast, but the property feels like a Greek village, and a golf cart is always just a quick call away to whisk you to your next relaxing activity faster than you can say “Captain Vassilis Constantakopoulos” (the self-made Messinian shipping magnate and environmentalist who founded Costa Navarino).

W Hotel at Navarino Bay

The W Hotel at Navarino Bay would make a great option for young and solo travelers with its beach club vibe, luxe, design-forward accommodations, and packed roster of events like live music, wellness programming,  DJ sets, cocktail festivals, and chef barbecues on the beach all summer long. There’s even a boutique on site that rents vacation fashion for stylish stays.

Eating and Drinking in Costa Navarino

Breakfast each day at Pero featured dappled sunlight, freshly squeezed Peleponnese orange juice and a magnificent buffet of local delicacies including Greek cheeses (like Sfela, the region’s feta) and sheep yogurt, Messinian pastries (try the honey drizzled fried dough called diples) and breads (the sesame bagel-like koulouri and the crunchy loops called lalangia are particularly delicious), and, of course, eggs and coffees to order.

Lunch at Flame

I also dined onsite at Flame, the steakhouse that resides in the Dunes Golf Club, and Paráfrasi by CTC, a charming and intimate spot that offers Michelin-starred Chef Alexandros Tsiotinis takes on Messinian classics. My favorite meal at the Romanos was lunch at Barbouni, right on the beach, including a bright assortment of five meze spreads, crispy fried calamari, and an amazing seabass filet with local greens braised in olive oil and an artichoke and orange salad.

Parelia W Costa Navarino

On my final night in this Ionian paradise, I had dinner at Parelia at the W Hotel, just a 15 minute shuttle ride away. I ate charred skewers of octopus “souvlaki”, a massive heirloom tomato salad, and a gorgeous bowl of linguine with local shellfish while the waves lapped in the foreground.

For more traditional local fare, head to the nearby town of Gialova where you can dine right on the bay, or to the central square of Pylos to eat meze, drink ouzo or tsipouro and people watch.

Lunch in Pylos Central Square

I adored the approachable Messinian wines from Navarino Vineyards, an organic winery run by the Costa Navarino destination. Their 1827 Rosé of syrah kept me happy poolside and as an aperitivo, and the individual restaurants offered many other Greek wines to try–look for malagouzia (a fragrant white) and agiorgitiko (an elegant fruity red). I learned a ton about the region’s grape varieties at a tasting at Cellier, the wine shop at the Agora.  You can also visit wineries, like Panagiotopoulos, for tours and tasting nearby.

Other Fun Things to Do in Costa Navarino

Gialova Lagoon
Gialova Lagoon photo by Lisa Futterman
  • Take a day trip to the archaeological site at Ancient Olympia, a Unesco World Heritage Site, about 90 minutes north of Costa Navarino, to see the birthplace of the Olympic Games.
  • Drive into the mountains to explore Ancient Messene, another important archaeological park that tells the story of daily life in the ancient city.
  • Experience the olive harvest during October and November, or learn about olive oil by tasting Messina’s finest, made with local koroneiki olives, with the pros.
  • Book an authentic village cooking class where Messinian women teach their family recipes.
  • Spend a day in Kalamata. Choose a Wednesday or Saturday so you can shop at the farmer’s market, then wander the streets to find museums, cafes and the historic center.
  • Enjoy a Greek summer tradition–see a movie under the stars in the Danaos Open Air Cinema at Navarino Agora.
  • Pick a sport or five. Play tennis, basketball, soccer, and golf.  Bike, climb, and hike. Kayak, kitesurf, wakeboard, and waterski.

I wished I had a month discovering the Peloponnese with Costa Navarino as my super comfortable Greek home base. I can’t wait to go back.

One of the best parts of visiting Greece is the amazing Greek food and drinks. The food in Greece is rich and fresh. Not to mention how unique the drinks are there.

We were in Greece for a little over two weeks and I enjoyed the food and wine so much I gained 7 pounds while we were there. Oops. Now I’m hitting the gym multiple times a week. It always amazes me how easy it is to gain weight and how hard it is to lose. It’s so unfair.

One great thing about Greek food is no matter what part of Greece you visit the Greek Islands or the mainland, it is easy to find something you like to eat, even if you have dietary restrictions. If you are vegetarian you will be in heaven.

Now, I left out some obvious foods, like olives and tzatziki. The olives in Greece are phenomenal, and I think we ate them with at least one meal today. The same goes for tzatziki. It is served with lots of food and should be enjoyed as much as possible!

16 Greek Foods and Drinks in Greece You Must Try

1. GyrosGyro

Okay, maybe I shouldn’t put it at the top of the list, but they are just so good. I could have eaten a gyro every day we were in Greece. And they are so cheap! In Greece, you can have them add French Fries inside your gyro. Also, many times they offer a gyro plate or a gyro, be careful when you order or you will end up with the plate which tends to cost double.

2. Greek Salad (Choriatiki)Greek Salad

When in doubt, you cannot go wrong with a Greek Salad. Everywhere you go, these salads will be available and they are always good.

3. Souvlaki

img 1256 1

One of the most popular things to eat in Greece is Souvlaki. It’s always some type of grilled meat cut into small pieces and served on a skewer.

4. KebabsKebabs

Kebabs is another popular dish that can be served in several ways. When we tried it the meat kebabs were topped with tzatziki and served over pita bread.

5. Stuffed Grape Leaves (Dolmadakia)

Dolmadakia

Stuffed grape leaves are not my favorite, but if you are in Greece you have to give them a try. They are certainly much tastier in Greece than in the places in America where I have had them. They are grapevine leaves stuffed with a mixture of rice, meat, and spices.

6. MoussakaMoussaka

Moussaka is an eggplant- or potato-based dish popular in Greece. Some refer to it as eggplant casserole. Greek Moussaka is layers of minced beef or lamb cooked in a tomato-based sauce, layered with eggplants and béchamel sauce, and baked together.

7. Halloumi

Halloumi
Halloumi cheese, part of the breakfast buffet at Xenia Ouranoupolis

Halloumi is a type of white Greek cheese and in my opinion the best cheese I have ever had. I’m obsessed with it after our last trip to Greece. It’s a mixture of goat and sheep cheese, except I think it tastes nothing like goat cheese. I hate goat cheese.

Fun Fact: In ancient Greece, they believed that the son of Apollo, Aristaios, was the god that brought cheese-making to Greece.

8. Tirokafteriimg 1332

Tirokafteri also sometimes referred to as Ktipiti is a warm cheese dip.  Ingredients most commonly include feta and sometimes other types of soft white cheese, red cherry pepper, roasted peppers, olive oil, lemon juice, oregano, garlic, and yogurt. It is commonly eaten as part of a  platter, or by itself, with slices of bread.

9. Stuffed Aubergine

Stuffed Aubergine
Stuffed Aubergine

Aubergine means eggplant, so this is usually a vegetarian dish. The eggplant is stuffed with things like cheese, peppers, onions, tomatoes, and baked. Sometimes, it is stuffed with meat. This was one of the best things I ate while in Greece.

10. PastitsioPastitsio

Pastitsio is a Greek baked pasta dish that contains ground lamb and béchamel sauce. Many people refer to it as Greek lasagna or a Greek casserole.

11. Gemista

Gemista

Gemista is a stuffed pepper dish that is usually vegetarian but sometimes stuffed with meat.

12. Loukoumades

Loukoumades

Loukoumades are like Greek donut holes. Loukoumades are little fried dough balls that are sometimes sprinkled with sweet syrup or honey, nuts, and cinnamon. We found these being served as dessert on a dinner buffet and as breakfast on a breakfast buffet.

13. Greek Yogurt

Greek yogurt is a staple for breakfast in Greece. Drizzle some honey over it and add a bit of granola and enjoy.

14. Greek Wines

Greek wines

When in Greece you must experience some of their wines. They have wines I had never heard of before. Try Agiorgitiko the Merlot of Greece, an Assyrtiko, usually from Santorini, a Malagousia, a Moschofilero, and a Xinomavro.

The most popular wine is Restina. Retsina is a Greek white resinated wine, which has been made for over 2,000 years.

15. Ouzo

Ouzo is a dry anise-flavored aperitif that is widely consumed in Greece, Cyprus, Lebanon and Israel. Its taste is similar to other anise liquors like pastis and sambuca. I think it tastes like black licorice. It’s strong, up to 90 proof, so only drink a little!

16. Tsipouro

Tsipouro is a pomace (the residue of the wine press) brandy from Greece and in particular Thessaly, Epirus, Macedonia, and the island of Crete. Tsipouro is a pure grape distillate, similar to Italian Grappa.  Tsipouro is a strong distilled spirit containing 40-45% alcohol by volume.

Are you contemplating on whether or not to visit Mykonos with kids?

Find out why I think taking kids to Mykonos is completely fine and fun. Mykonos with Kids

I know what you are thinking, do not take kids to Mykonos. Well, I disagree. I think taking kids to Mykonos is perfectly fine. Now I am not going to take them to go party at the Toy Room or down to Paradise Beach, but there is still plenty for us to see and do.

One or two nights in Mykonos is all you need!

I recommend spending one night in Mykonos, maybe two nights. We stayed two night and if my kids hadn’t been completely beached out from our previous visit to Halkidiki then we would have just hit another beach and two nights would have been perfect. As it was, two nights was one too many for us. We arrived around 4 PM by ferry from Santorini allowing us plenty of time to get checked into our hotel, rent a car, and walk around Mykonos City. Mykonos is a tiny island, so you can do a lot in a short amount of time.

Where to eat in Mykonos

img 2007There are lots of great places to eat in Mykonos. I based where we ate on my budget. You could easily spend several hundred dollars on just one meal feeding a family at some of the restaurants on the island. I recommend always checking out the prices before sitting down at the table.

D’Angelos – D’ Angelos is a fantastic Italian food restaurant in Mykonos City. It was the best meal we had in Mykonos.

Souvlaki Story -Souvlaki Story is a good option when trying to eat cheap. I highly recommend their gyros. Noah ordered the hamburger and does not recommend it. You can see why in the photo. img 1729

Sakis – Sakis is another cheap place to eat in Mykonos with excellent gyros.

Trio Bambini – Trio Bambini is a gelato shop and creperie. Here’s a photo of the Coconut Dream Crepe, which was absolutely delicious. Further down you can see a picture of their American waffle. img 1830

Things to do in Mykonos, Greece

Mykonos City

There are lots of things to do in Mykonos besides party.

Visit Mykonos City

Mykonos City is a must see. You cannot visit here and not spend a fairly good amount of time getting lost in their winding pathways. If the nighttime is too crazy for you, come back during the day, when all those people that were out all night are still sleeping their night off.

Mykonos CityAs you walk around it may seem like an expensive place to eat, but I can assure there are some super affordable ones sprinkled in. Our first night there we ate at Soulvaki Story. They have two locations in Mykonos City and they have cheap gyros. Another cheap place to eat is Sakis. Our favorite place to eat is the Trio Bambini a creperie and gelato shop. Just look at our crepe above and this over the top waffle creation named the American! img 1831

Little Venice

Little Venice is a fantastic little area inside of Mykonos City and is a must see when you are visiting Mykonos. Plan to take pictures and do some strolling.

Whatever you do, Do Not wear high heels!

Visit the Windmillsimg 1819

For whatever reason the windmills in Mykonos are famous. So, you must visit them and take a photo.

Go to the beach

Platis Gialos Beach a family friendly beach in Mykonos

You must plan for time at the beach. Mykonos has wonderful beaches. Unlike Santorini, where the beaches are made up of rocks, Mykonos has lovely sandy beaches.

  • Plati Gialos – Our favorite beach is Plati Gialos. You can rent beach chairs at Mykonos Dove Beach for 10 euros a chair, so two loungers and an umbrella for 20 euros. My favorite thing out renting at this place is the umbrellas. They have solar panels on them and two USB ports so you can stay charged. If you are traveling with teens this is a big deal. Anytime you rent beach chairs there is usually drink and food service too. I found the drinks to be too expensive, but the solution was easy. Plati Gialos beach has a little store in between all of the beach bars. Here you can buy alcoholic drinks and ice cream bars for less than 3 euros. The water is cold, but on a hot day it will not matter. They have a fun floating dock that kids like to climb on and jump off, but be careful. It is bolted together and Jonah cut his foot pretty bad on one of them. I ended up having to carry him off the dock and back to where we were seated. He said my “mom power” must have kicked in and I guess it did, because I was surprised how easily I managed him even though he is not so little anymore.

Hanging out at Platis Gialos Beach
Hanging out at Platis Gialos Beach
  • Ornos – Ornos seems to always be the recommended beach for families by the locals, but for us there were just too many people. It was jam packed with people and the vibe didn’t feel as family friendly as Plati Gialos did. img 1834

  • Agia Anna is another low key beach we liked. It’s tiny and not near as popular, which with kids is a good thing. You can rent two chairs and an umbrella for 18 euros. There’s a free parking lot here. This is also where you will find Pinky beach. They have a swing down in the beach, which is a perfect photo opportunity. img 1745

  • Paradise Beach – I only go here when I do not have the kids with me, but it is a nice beach and I have seen kids there. They beach restaurants are basically clubs so don’t be surprised when people start dancing and drinking. And by dancing I mean bumping and grinding.

    Paradise Beach in Mykonos
    Paradise Beach in Mykonos

Go Karts

img 1840

There is a super fun go kart place in the middle of the island. For 15 euros a person you can zip around for 10-15 minutes on their course. Their go karts go fast! I was worried that it was too hot of a day for go karting, but their track is on a hill and there’s a nice breeze up there.

Parent’s Night Out – Go Clubbing

On the off chance you can ditch the kids and go out Mykonos is jam packed with bars and clubs. Apparently Lindsey Lohan has a club somewhere on the island that’s really good. I have not experienced it first hand, I have experienced two good clubs.

  • Toy Room – They have excellent security. My sister had a guy bothering her and they made him leave, much to our relief.
  • Hakkasan – Yes, like the Hakkasan in Vegas.
  • Lohan Beach Club – Now, the locals kept telling me that I should take the kids to Lindsey Lohna’s Beach Club, but I was a little unsure. They offer breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks and refreshments throughout the day. And of course there’s dancing. It’s down south not far from the Super Paradise beach. The address is: Kalo Livadi, 84600, Kikladhes

Day Trips

There are of course a number of day trips you take while you are here, but to me the point of coming to Mykonos is to experience the beaches and Mykonos city, so why leave. If you have a day to kill and your kids do not want to visit another beach, take them on a day trip tour of Delos.

Where to Stay in Mykonos

Terra Maltese
Terra Maltese Mykonos Hotel

There are several places that will be obvious that you do not want to stay at with children. What can be super fun as a single adult can quickly become a nightmare for kids and parents that didn’t sleep good all night. Originally when I began planning our trip I wanted to stay in the city. I wanted to be right there where all the action was, but the more I thought about this, the less this seemed like a good idea. My kids are well traveled and have seen a lot of things good and bad. But I really do not think they need to be exposed to young singles totally and completely raging out. Which lets face it, that’s why most people visit Mykonos. It’s definitely one of the biggest party destinations in the world. And it is fun, my sister and I got to experience this side of it once.

In fact, if you have followed along with me for a long time you may recall that on my last visit to Mykonos I ended up staying in a complete dump. (Here’s a review I wrote titled: Junkyard Living.) Lucky for me, the kids happen to not be with me. It was just my sister and I, and the two of us just sucked it up and powered through it. This time I was way more careful. I decided to avoid all booking sites to find a hotel, since it was the deceitful listing on booking.com that landed my sister in a gross hotel last time. This time I contacted a blogger in Santorini, Olga from https://santorinitraveltots.com. We randomly connected online and I ask her if she could help me find somewhere to stay.

Terra Maltese Mykonos Hotel

Sure enough, she ask around and got us in contact with Terra Maltese Mykonos. This is the perfect place to stay if you are needing to spend less than $200 per night and stay somewhere nice. We stayed in one of their triple rooms and they brought in an extra bed for us. The room also included a decent breakfast buffet every morning for 180.00 euros a night. It was a thousand times better than the last place I stayed. Oh, and it had a pool too. Another plus of staying here, they were the middle man for my car rental. In Greece, it is always better to let the locals help you with these things.

Random Tips for Visiting Mykonos with Kids

  • Eat Cheap: It is always cheaper to order a gyro than it is to get a gyro plate. I swear it’s the same amount of food at half the cost.
  • Order Smart: Younger kids can have a hard time holding a gyro together and eating it. It may be better to order them a “small size” of the restaurants gyro or soulvaki plate.
  • Lots of Ice Cream: If you are visiting in the summer plan to get your kids ice cream at least once a day. Everyone stays happier this way.
  • Always carry water with you. Do not drink their water, instead pop into a grocery store and by each member of the family a few bottles of water.
  • Sunscreen, sunglasses and hats: Never leave the hotel room without both and wear all the time.
  • Rent a car: Getting around Mykonos can become difficult quickly if you are relying on taxis. Last I heard, they have less than 50 taxis on the island. It only costs 60 euros a day to rent a car in Mykonosimg 1769

How to get to Mykonos

Mykonos has a ferry port and an airport. Easy Jet flies into this airport and they are always offering cheap fares. We used Sea Jet to ferry from Santorini to Mykonos and then flew out on Easy Jet to Paris for 37 euros a person.

Should You Get Travel Insurance?

Don’t forget travel insurance! I’m a fan of Travelex insurance, because of the variety of options. Protect yourself from possible injury & theft abroad. I have gotten extremely sick twice now out of the country, one of the times was in Greece. Plus, Noah has had seizures in other countries, so I always recommend getting some sort of coverage. Do you want to plan a trip that the whole family will enjoy, even the teenagers? Let’s face it, the easiest way to make any family vacation successful is to keep the kids happy! To get an idea of what kind of vacation a kid would most enjoy I ask a group of experts aka my kids.

Noah, Eden, and Jonah have been traveling with me their entire lives. So far the three of them have been to at least 22 countries, 4 continents, and almost every state in the United States. Needless to say, when I ask them what the best family vacations were, they had more than a few opinions!

They quickly fired off an assortment of places we have been. It was interesting to hear what they picked, some of them I knew, but other ones were a complete surprise. After some serious conversation with them, we’ve narrowed it down to 17!

Top 17 Family Vacations You will Never Forget!

1. SingaporeSingapore

Singapore is in all of our top ten picks. My oldest, Noah considers Singapore to be a utopia because of its cleanliness and orderliness. Oddly enough, we were only in Singapore for two days, making it one of the shortest stays we have done anywhere. It only took one day for us to fall in love with this city. We recommend walking around Marina Bay where the architecture is insane and definitely visit some parts of the Marina Bay Gardens. I can assure you that your kids have never seen anything else like this! The kid’s favorite hotel here is the Fairmont Singapore. For more ideas on what to do and where to find the best milkshake see my article: Singapore Travel Guide.

2. CancunCancun Family Adventure

Cancun has so much going on, and don’t worry, it’s safe. We spent a week there and basically had a non-stop adventure! The entire area is set up well to accommodate any kind of family and literally any type of budget. Families will appreciate luxurious, all-inclusive resorts with kid’s clubs and teen clubs. While the kids are off doing their own thing parents can head to a spa or the bar. There isn’t a bad beach anywhere in the area, so plan to spend at least two full days beach bumming.  While you are there, be sure to see Mayan Ruins, swim in a cenote, eat lots of Mexican food, and go ATVing.

For a list fun family things to do in Cancun check out this post: 12 Adventurous Things to do in Cancun. I recommend staying at The Grand in Cancun or at another one of the  11 Best All-inclusive Resorts in Cancun for Families.

If at some point you head over to Cozumel (you totally should), check out my post: 13 Things to do in Cozumel. I recommend staying at Allegro Cozumel.

3. ThailandThings to do in Phuket Thailand with Kids

Thailand is absolutely incredible and I wasn’t surprised it landed in my kids top three places. You can basically go anywhere in Thailand and have an interesting experience. I recommend visiting at least these three places when you go: Phuket, Bangkok, and Chiang Mai. Although they each have some similarities they are completely different experiences.

Phuket

Phuket is one of Thailand’s islands and it’s extremely kid friendly. My kids thought taking a Thai cooking class was cool and they loved going to the beaches and interacting with elephants and tigers. To find the elephants on the beach check out my post: Swimming with Elephants in Thailand. And for more help planning your trip to Phuket see my article: 5 Day Phuket Itinerary with Kids.

Bangkok

Bangkok is massive so there are loads and activities. The kids loved biking through the city despite the heavy traffic and they were thrilled when we stumbled across monstrous milkshakes. To read more about taking Bangkok to kids, check out my article: Two Days in Bangkok with Kids.

Chiang Mai

Chiang Mai is an easy city to get around and it has tons to see and do. The city has an incredible night market where you and your kids could shop for hours. Here you will find interesting things to purchase like leather journals, bracelets, and tuk-tuks made out of soda cans. There is an elephant sanctuary where families can care for elephants and of course the food is outstanding! I recommend staying at the Shangri-la and taking a food and city tour by bike. Learn more about visiting Chiang Mai with kids in my article: 4 Things to do in Chiang Mai with kids.

4. New York CityNYC Street Art

New York City is currently Noah’s #1 and in Eden’s top 3 and in my top 15. The kids love the many dessert experiences here like Serendipity and  Black Tap. Both places have outrageous over-the-top desserts. They all enjoy hanging out in Central Park and Bryant Park, both parks have lots of free activities. At Bryant Park, kids can play kubb, while parents grab a drink at the little outdoor bar there. In Central Park, there are multiple playgrounds.

Visiting the 9/11 memorial is a must and if the kids are 10 or older tour the museum. Kids enjoy touring the Statue of Liberty, but not necessarily Ellis Island. If you do, go to Ellis Island to look for your family’s name on the wall. If you want to do a bus tour I recommend The Ride, especially if your kids are teens or tweens. I think going to a Broadway show is a must, but this is expensive and not worth it if your kids hate musicals or might possibly sleep through it. Good plays for kids are Wicked, Lion King, and Phantom of the Opera.

Remember the further out you can plan a trip to New York the cheaper the trip will be. Here are 15 Ways to save money in NYC.

We’ve been to NYC more times than we can remember. Check out our New York City Travel Guide to help you plan your own epic NYC getaway!

5. Oahu, Hawaii

Views from Diamond Head hike
Views from the top of Diamond Head a kid-friendly hike in Oahu.

Hawaii is another place that all three kids agree on and Oahu is their top island followed by Kauai. On Oahu, their favorite thing to do is sit at the pool or sit on the beach.

The kids recommend hanging out at the beach on North Shore to check out the waves and do some shopping. While you are up there have shrimp from Giovani’s Shrimp truck and get shaved ice at Matsumoto Shave Ice. If you feel like getting active rent a paddleboard at Sea N Surf and paddle up the Anahulu River and look for sea turtles. The last time we went we saw five huge sea turtles.

Also, fun in Oahu is parasailing in Waikiki and hiking to the top of Diamond Head. When you get done hiking Diamond Head, stop by Shimazu Shave Ice for massive shaved ice.

For more help planning your family’s Oahu vacation read our Oahu Travel Guide

I highly recommend staying at Disney’s Aulani if possible.

6. OrlandoVolcano Bay at Universal Orlando

Orlando would probably make any kid’s list. With it being home to Disney World, Sea World, Discovery Cove, and Universal Studios a family could spend a month and do something different every single day. Universal Orlando is a must once each kid is tall enough to ride all the roller coasters and the new water park, Volcano Bay is fantastic. Besides the theme parks, there are all sorts of other fun things to do like swamp tours through alligator-infested waters, knight tournaments at Medieval Times, and within a short drive lots of beaches.

7. LondonLondon with Kids

London also made it high on the list of the kid’s favorite places. We visited during Thanksgiving a few years ago and everything we did was awesome. There is so much to see and do that you can easily spend a week or two here and never run out of activities. Some of their favorite things were seeing the play Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, eating at Borough Market, and doing the Tower of London tour. Both boy’s least favorite thing to do is the bus tours. I personally appreciated how many free things there were to do in London. For more London ideas and tips, see my article: London with Kids.

8. Negril, Jamaica

Snuba at Beaches Negril
Snuba at Beaches Negril

Negril, Jamaica is Jonah’s #1 pick, and if I was his age, I think this would possibly be my #1 too. We recommend staying at Beaches Negril. This is an all-inclusive resort geared specifically for families. Highlights of staying here include:

  • Sesame Street parade and BBQ party where families can dance with the characters, DJs lead dances, flame throwers perform, and more.
  • Ice Cream Machine – The kids loved the ice cream machine which they visited a minimum of three times a day. (Don’t judge me, it’s vacation!)
  • Snuba – Even kids can snuba at Beaches Negril and they do not have to have any experience to do this. The instructors are fabulous and it’s an activity the kids will never forget.
  • Multiple pools, a lazy river, a water playground, and hot tubs.
  • Miniature golf
  • Video game lounge
  • Kid’s club

9. Vail, ColoradoVail, Colorado with kids

Vail, Colorado is another destination that is enjoyable year-round. During the summer the kids enjoy biking around town, riding horses around the mountain, and visiting the Epic Discovery adventure park set up on the mountain. In the winter the skiing is excellent. My kids have skied since they were little and appreciate the extensive skiing found in Vail. If you do not ski, this is a great place to learn.  For more info, check out our Vail Travel Guide.

10. Silvies Valley RanchKidding Experience at Silvies

Visiting a dude ranch is a completely unique vacation. You can have an experience as a family that just can’t be had unless you are on a working ranch. Here you can shoot guns, interact with baby goats, hit the spa, experience gourmet dining, participate in a cattle round-up, and much more. They even have four golf courses on the ranch. Golf lovers will flip out over the reversible golf course that’s right I said reversible! With a little bit of everything, your family is sure to have an incredible time. To get a feel of the overall ranch read about our Silvies Valley Ranch Experience.

11. GreeceGreece with kids

Greece is an epic experience because let’s face it, there’s no other place on earth like it. It basically doesn’t matter what part of the country you visit, you will never have a bad meal, you will experience history and culture like never before. I can state this as a fact because we’ve traveled all over Greece and it’s all been wonderful.

Athens

Chances are high that one way or another a Greek vacation is going to take you through Athens at some point. Plan to spend at least a day here so you can visit the Acropolis before heading out to the islands. At night during the sunset dine at Savvas, their rooftop overlooks the Acropolis. Hotels can be difficult to get for a family, you may want to stay in an Airbnb.

Mykonos

A one of a kind city and gorgeous beaches await you in Mykonos. Teens and parents alike will love Mykonos City full of white-washed buildings. Also, if you can get a sitter or if your kids are old enough to stay at the hotel alone plan to go out. Mykonos has one of the best nightlife experiences in the world.

Santorini

Here you will have the opportunity to see things you’ve never see before like Red Beach. Perissa, the black beach is also worth visiting if you’ve never seen one before. There are two towns built into the sides of the island, both of which are worth spending time in, Fira and Oia. In Oia, you will see one of the greatest sunsets in the world.

Thessaloniki

Thessaloniki is from biblical times and many of their historical sights have withstood the test of time. (Okay, I know what you are thinking. Yes, all of Greece is from biblical times.) They basically have ruins or a gorgeous church around every corner. The food scene is excellent here. For a list of things to see and do check out my post: Thessaloniki on a Budget

Kassandra

Can’t afford to splurge on the islands? Head here instead. Here you will be greeted with that famous aqua water and glorious beaches. Go shopping in Pefkochori and grab lunch at Agora Beach Bar. I highly recommend staying at Alexander the Great Beach Resort in this area.

12. Australiafeeding kangaroos at the Great Ocean Road Wildlife Park

If you can get yourself to Australia, do it! Australia is just as fabulous as everyone says it is. There are so many varied experiences to be had throughout the country.  Try to plan a minimum of 9 days in the country. More than two weeks would be better.

Whitsunday Islands

If swimming the Great Barrier Reef is on your bucket list, then this should be your first stop. Whitehaven Beach should also be on your bucket list. It’s one of the most beautiful beaches in the world.

Melbourne

If you’ve got a family of foodies, Melbourne is sure to delight. They have the most over-the-top, whimsical food creations you’ve likely ever seen. In between beautiful meals stop by the Brighton Beach Bathing Boxes and the graffiti alleys. The alleys in Melbourne are really cool.

Great Ocean Road

One of the top road trips in the world is driving the Great Ocean Road. Along the way, you can stop at dozens of scenic overlooks and take in the magnificent rock formations like Loch Ard Gorge and the 12 Apostles. You can enjoy one of the many nice beaches where kids can swim and play in the sand. Plus, there are animal encounters. Pull over to look for koalas in the trees and feed the birds at Kafe Koala. Be sure to stop at the Great Ocean Road Wildlife Park, where you can hand-feed kangaroos.

13. TexasSan Antonio

We are originally from Texas so it was no surprise that Texas made the list. The kids have been all over Texas and they recommend eating lots of Tex-Mex food and visiting the following cities: Dallas/Fort Worth, Austin, San Antonio, and Corpus Christi.

San Antonio

San Antonio has a ton of stuff for families to do. Here you will find a massive zoo, Fiesta Texas theme park, the famous San Antonio River Walk, and just outside of town is Schlitterbahn the #1 water park in the world. When visiting plan at least one full day at Schlitterbahn, half a day at the river walk, and float the Comal river. Our favorite restaurants in San Antonio currently are Ocho, Toro Kitchen + Bar, and Rita’s on the River.

In San Antonio, I recommend staying at Hotel Emma.

Plan your entire trip with our San Antonio Travel Guide.

Dallas/Fort Worth

The Dallas, Fort Worth area is packed with stuff to do for families. Over in Fort Worth will love the rodeo at the stockyards. Be sure to go when they have bull riding. Also found in the stockyards is a fun maze and Texas-themed shopping. Plus, they do a daily cattle drive. Our favorite restaurants in Dallas include Meso Maya for dinner and El Jordan Cafe for breakfast. Just north of Dallas is Addison, TX which is jammed packed with great restaurants.

14. HondurasRoatan Honduras

Honduras is easily one of our top vacations, according to me. Unfortunately, the kids remember very little of the trip. I recommend going to Roatan and Copan. These two places are no where near each other and two extremely different experiences. What they do have in common is affordability!

Roatan

Roatan is one of the Bay Islands and along the 2nd best barrier reef in the world. The reef is near the shoreline making it extremely easy for kids to snorkel. Jonah was 4 when we visited and he was able to snorkel. Also fun here is zip lining and paddleboarding.

Copan

Copan is a Honduran city that borders Guatemala. Here you can go horseback riding up a mountain, go zip lining on one of the longest zip lines in the world, and visit an incredible hot spring.

15. Panama City Beach

go karting at Cobra Adventure Park in Panama City Beach
Go-karting at Cobra Adventure Park in Panama City Beach

Another family favorite in Florida is Panama City Beach. The beach has soft, powdery, white sand. It isn’t as big as many of the beach towns, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t a lot to do. Go mini-golfing and go-carting, spend the day at the beach, or shop around at Pier Park. Spend one day bopping around Scenic 30A, where you will find tiny beach towns like Seaside or Rosemary. Renting some bicycles is a perfect way to explore this area. Another interesting spot worth venturing out to is Sandestin’s Baytowne Wharf. Here, families can indulge in boutique shopping, zip-lining, ropes courses, an arcade, and unique eateries.

Use our Panama City Beach travel guide to plan your entire vacation.

16. Costa RicaLa Roca Canyoning - Rappeling in Costa Rica

Costa Rica is super cool country with a wide variety of things to do. The food was consistently good, the activities were exciting and the people were so nice. Whether rafting down a volcano’s raging rivers in a tube near La Fortuna to chilling at a beautiful beach on the Pacific or the Atlantic everyone is going to enjoy the country. Costa Rica Travel Guide

17. La PazBalandra Bay in La Paz

La Paz features miles of white sand beaches and endless opportunities for outdoor adventure including paddle boarding, kite surfing, kayaking, SCUBA diving, whale watching, swimming with whale sharks, sportfishing, hiking, mountain biking, and much more. If you want your kids off their devices and outside doing stuff you will love it here. Plus, the food is unbelievably good.

Plan your own trip with our La Paz Travel Guide for Families. Plus, Best Places to Stay in La Paz, Mexico and Best Beaches in La Paz.

Conclusion:

So, there you have it, the best of the best family travel locations. There are hundreds of other places that could have made the list but didn’t. These were ones that just barely missed making our list: Las Vegas, Bavarian Alps in Germany, Paris, and house boating on Lake Shuswap in British Columbia. Like Honduras, my kids do not even remember house boating up in Canada, but if they did (well not Jonah, he had yet to be born), I am sure it would have made it onto the list.

Where are your favorite places to take your kids on vacation? We are always taking recommendations and planning our next family vacations. Yes, plural. Why take just one vacation? I think you should take as many as possible, big trips, weekend getaways, family reunions, you name it. These are all opportunities to have fun, spend time together and make the most memories possible. And don’t delay. Noah’s a high school senior and he’s about to move on with his life. (Oregon State University #Bragging) And y’all, I straight up ran out of time with him. You will run out of time, so make today count.

Over the years, I’ve been blessed to travel extensively with my girlfriends. Whether for a destination bachelorette party, divorce party or just a weekend to get together and catch up I’ve been all over the place with my friends. Here are some of my favorite girl’s trips, including a few all-inclusive girlfriend getaways

Extraordinary Destinations for a Girlfriend Getaway

Let’s face it, some destinations are more memorable than others. Here are four stunning destinations that have a little bit of everything like epic views, one-of-a-kind experiences, incredible food, and more.

Oia Santorini
Oia Santorini

Greece

If you can go anywhere, go to Greece and visit at least two of the islands. My two favorites are Santorini and Mykonos.

In Santorini, you can enjoy world-renowned sunsets in Oia, lounge on unique beaches like the Red Beach, and dabble in the electrifying nightlife in Fira.

In Santorini, staying in a cave is a must. There are hundreds of little whitewashed caves burrowed into the side of the mountain and staying at one is a one-of-a-kind experience. If staying in a cave is too expensive, consider staying one night in a cave and then moving to a cheaper hotel for the other nights. We stayed in the Ethereum Luxury Cave

Over on the island of Mykonos, friends can party all night at legendary clubs like the Toy Room and Ling-Ling by Hakkasan. During the day, you can bop around Mykonos city to do some one-of-a-kind shopping or head to one of the many gorgeous beaches to enjoy a lazy day of lounging.

In Mykonos, you should stay in Mykonos City or at a beach. If you prefer the beach, I recommend staying down at Plati Gialos.

San Antonio Girls TripSan Antonio

San Antonio has it all. They have exceptional restaurants with amazing food, excellent shopping, swanky hotels along the river walk, and happening nightlife. My go-to place to stay with girlfriends is Hotel Emma, one of the top boutique hotels in the world. My second recommendation would be Mokara Hotel and Spa because it’s right on the riverwalk, and the spa was fantastic! For a long list of San Antonio recommendations, see my article: San Antonio Guide.

Bachelorette Party in Savannah
Bachelorette Party in Savannah

Savannah

Savannah is a picturesque city full of history, and the food is absolutely phenomenal. While you are here, shop along the waterfront at the famous River Street Market Place, dine at incredible restaurants like Paula Dean’s Lady and Sons restaurant and Belford’s where celebrities often dine, and of course, hit up a spa. If everyone is up for some nightlife fun, Savannah has a popping club scene down at City Market. I recommend renting a large historic home with your friends and make sure it has a pool, ’cause it gets hot down there. If you have time, head out to Tybee Island to enjoy the beach!

salt water pool at El Dorado RoyaleRiviera Maya

Riviera Maya, Mexico is situated just north of Playa Del Carmen and it is filled with luxurious all-inclusive hotels. Here you and your girlfriends can completely unwind.

For those that can afford to splurge, there is Grand Velas, an all-inclusive resort with a plush spa, upscale dining, and butler service to take care of everything little thing you may need. You can read our full Grand Velas review.

For those with a tighter budget, there is El Dorado Royale, where almost every room has an ocean view and they offer butler service as well. They had food so good my friend and I still talk about it!

If you decide you want to leave the resort Playa Del Carmen is a short taxi ride away. Here friends can enjoy both shopping and nightlife. Here are 12 activities near Riviera Maya.

New York CityNew York City

New York City never disappoints. You and your girlfriends can shop until you drop, catch award-winning shows and eat fancy meals. If you have your heart set on seeing a specific show be sure to buy tickets in advance. Be sure to end at least one night at Ayza Chocolate Bar and book the penthouse at the Row NYC. There is so much to see in do in NYC check out our guide to help you place your entire trip, New York City Travel Guide or our Mother Daughter New York City Weekend Getaway.

Party Getaways

There’s plenty of time for grown-up girls’ getaways, but every now and again you want to let loose. Here are a couple of spots where you can keep the party going long after the sun goes down! Granted, all of the places mentioned here could be a party destination should you choose to make it.

AustinAustin, Texas Bachelorette Party

Austin, Texas has exploded over the last couple of years and there’s a good reason why. With well over 60,000 college students attending the University of Texas, including my daughter Eden, there are a lot of bars.

6th Street is the go-to party street. The street is closed off for pedestrian traffic only, making it easy to bounce from one bar to the next. There’s live music all over the place. If 6th Street is too intense, head one street over. On 5th street, the vibe is a little less rowdy and there are a lot of great rooftop bars.

If you want to take a break from the bar scene, try an area wine tour, go float the river, or visit one of the area springs to cool off! No matter what you do, have BBQ

In Austin, we recommend staying at The Line or renting a sweet VRBO.

Las Vegas

vegas dress
Vegas Baby!

Las Vegas is one of the top party cities in the world and everyone in your group will have fun dancing at night at packed clubs while famous DJs spin away. By day, friends can relax at the spa and lounge by the pool. My favorite place to stay with friends in Vegas is the Cosmopolitan or a VRBO. Here’s a list of our favorite VRBO Las Vegas Vacation Homes

For a list of recommendations, see my article: Las Vegas Girlfriends Getaway.

BangkokFind out what the top two Rooftop bars in Bangkok are

The nightlife in Bangkok is banging. (See what I did there?) They’ve got some of the most phenomenal rooftop bars in the entire world. Plus, the most famous party street in the world, Khao San Road. While you are there you must make time to see the sights and eat the incredible food. I recommend staying at Banyan Tree or at Fraser Suites.

Spa Getaways

Everyone deserves to be pampered once and a while. Why not take a spa trip with friends? You can enjoy long gourmet meals together, splurge on decadent spa treatments, and just take a break from the world. I recommend taking a spa trip to an all-inclusive getaway, especially if you’re a mom. Everything is done for you, which allows you to completely unwind. Whatever spa you decide to visit make sure they have a substantial hydrotherapy circuit.

Puerto Vallarta

Hotel Mousai

Puerto Vallarta is a fantastic city with rich culture, fantastic food, and lots of activities. Over the years it has gotten better on every level, so if it’s been over a decade since you visited it’s definitely worth going back. My favorite place to stay in Puerto Vallarta happens to also be my absolute favorite hotel in the world, Hotel Mousai. Their spa was out of this world and the rooftop pool is spectacular.

Punta Canaimg 4407

Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic often flies under the radar, but it’s an ideal place for a girlfriend’s getaway. The beaches are gorgeous, there are lots of fun things to do, and the food is unique. My favorite place to stay is Dreams Onyx on the adults-only side. If you want the spa plus the party, stay at Breathless. The pace is slow in Punta Cana, allowing you to fully relax.

Cancun

Live Aqua Cancun

Cancun could have gone under the party place, but what I enjoyed so much when I was there was not the party scene it was the spas. Almost every large resort has a pretty spectacular spa. My favorite place to stay in Cancun is in the resort zone at adult’s only all-inclusive Live Aqua Cancun. They do have a spa, but I recommend a different one. My favorite spa is Coral Beach Gem Spa located inside the Grand Fiesta Americana Coral Beach resort.

Coral Beach Gem Spa
Coral Beach Gem Spa

Los Cabos

Cabo Girls Trip

Cabo is really ideal. For those on the West Coast, it’s super easy to get to and like most touristy places in Mexico, they’ve got it all. Fun excursions, elaborate all-inclusive resorts, killer food, and more. When I went with my friends we stayed at Paradisus. It was wonderful, but next time we will stay at Garza Blanca. Here is our Los Cabos Girlfriend Getaway to help you plan a fabulous trip.

Wino Getaways

There are few things in life better than catching up with your girls over a bottle of wine. Here are some wine-focused getaways everyone in your group will enjoy. If you want to visit an area with lots of wineries these are my top picks.

Portland Area

Brooks Winery
Brooks Winery

If food and wine are your top priorities head to Portland, Oregon,  where the foodie scene just keeps getting better and better as local award-winning chefs and winemakers continue to push the limits. Plus, the wine scene has exploded just outside of Portland in Hood River and Willamette Valley. In addition to good food and wine, they have a vibrant music scene and stunning gardens worth touring. For more food recommendations in Portland see my article: Best Things to Eat and Drink in Portland.

Fredericksburg

Das Peachhaus Winery Fredericksburg

For a low-key girls’ weekend filled with sweet Texas wines and boutique shopping, Fredericksburg is an excellent choice. This quaint German Texas town is full of wineries and independently owned shops and restaurants. Das Peach Hous has lots of area wines you can try and the property is beautiful. Visit the pond out back for a great photo opportunity. Other wineries you should visit are Messina Hof, Wedding Oak Winery at Wildseed Oak, and Fiesta Winery.

Fredericksburg, Texas
Silver Creek Bar & Grill in Fredericksburg, Texas

For a German lunch or dinner, eat at the Silver Creek Beer Garden and Grille. They almost always have live music. For a more upscale dinner, try Navajo Grill. At night you can grab a beer at Hondo’s on Main and listen to some live Texas rock. I recommend staying at Hoffman Haus or one of these: 10 Unique Places to Stay in Fredericksburg, Texas. To place your entire trip check out: Fredericksburg Girls’ Trip: Wine, Dine, and Shop Till You Drop.

Napa ValleyGirlfriends trip in Calistoga, California

I suppose everyone knows that Napa Valley is the place to go for a wine trip. I recommend staying in Calistoga, that’s where Dawna and I stayed for her birthday. Calistoga is a small city known for hot springs, mud baths, and of course amazing wineries. Stay at the Solage Resort, they’ve got a spa, multiple hot pools, excellent food, loaner bikes, and it’s close to lots of wineries. Be sure to visit Davis Winery, it blew our minds.

Finger LakesWineries in the Finger Lakes

The Finger Lakes region of New York is bursting with wineries. You could spend several days in this area and never run out of wineries to visit. Some of my favorites are Montezuma Winery where you will want to sample their award-winning Diamond wine, Glenora Winery where you can try a fizzy pomegranate wine, and Belhurst Winery where the inside of the castle alone makes it worth the stop.

For a beautiful place to stay with a stunning garden, stay at Mirbeau Inn and Spa. As you plan your winery route be sure to make your way down to Watkins Glen State Park for a phenomenal hike.

Conclusion

This list could easily keep going because let’s face it when you are with friends any place is a good destination! This list gives you a lot of ideas to start planning your own girls’ trip.

Other places that are always fun that I didn’t include, but they came close to being in my top choices were Los Angeles and New Orleans. In fact, my next girl’s trip is in New Orleans in a few months with my Odessa girls, so I’ll probably be updating this soon.

The best part about planning a trip with your friends is that it doesn’t matter where you go. When you are with good friends you are guaranteed to have an epic time.

Get Travel Insurance

Unfortunately, there are a lot of things that can go wrong on any trip. Be prepared for the worst with travel insurance. We use Travelex or Safety Wing (often cheaper).

Book Flights

I use Skyscanner to find flights. I use it so much, I wrote an entire guide to finding cheap flights with Skyscanner! Another option for finding deals is FlightHub.

Book a Place to Stay

I recommend using Expedia.com or Hotels.com for most hotel bookings. I prefer to book directly with Marriott when I stay there because of their excellent military discount.

If you prefer staying in a vacation rental instead, I recommend VRBO. If you are looking for a hostel, I use HostelWorld.

Choose Activities and Tours

To find great activities in any area I use Viator. If we are visiting a city with lots of popular attractions I always check CityPass, PogoPass, and GoCard to see if they have discount cards available. Groupon also tends to have a lot of local travel deals.

When I want to book a full-on multi-day tour I use TourRadar. They’ve got fantastic weekly deals. If going somewhere in Mexico or the Caribbean, I use Apple Vacations.

Rent a Car or Get a Lyft

More often than not, Lyft is cheaper than Uber. Use my Lyft link for an $18 credit! For a car rental in any country, I recommend Hertz or Discover Cars.

Save Money on Gas

Upside a free app gets you cash back on gas! Use promo code RV2Q2 to get an extra 15¢/gal bonus on your first purchase.

Get a Visa

I use iVisa to get all of my Visas.

While most travelers bound for “the Greek Islands” are heading for the Mediterranean, as these are largely the only islands people think of in connection with Greece, there are lesser-visited islands in the Aegean Sea, too. Chios is the fifth largest of all the Greek islands and very different from the iconic white and blue architecture in the Mediterranean. Probably the most common phrase used to describe it is “a step back in time.” Chios is full of unique and well-preserved medieval villages, with several UNESCO World Heritage designations. The thing it has in common with the rest of Greece is the abundance of kitty cats!

The primary population hub is the town of Chios, and it’s a good place to base for several days of exploration. You can reach Chios by ferry or airport, but in order to best explore the island, it’s advisable to rent a car, available at the airport. You can hire taxis to get around but that will cost you more money; you can take buses to some locations but that will cost you more time. The cross-island highways are nice, paved routes with wide lanes; the town streets, however, are your typical old cobblestone lanes that are very narrow, so I recommend a compact car.

Based in Chios Town, you can easily spend three days packed with activities, or slow down a little, spread them out, and discover even more. These are some suggestions and don’t-miss attractions for three days. Four nights is recommended so you can get a full day in your first day.

DAY 1. Explore Chios Town and Visit a Monastery

Chios Town

Walk through town in the morning into early afternoon, and take a scenic drive in the afternoon, visiting Nea Moni Monastery. Chios Town itself is perhaps one of the less picturesque towns, but there are still interesting things to see.

Chios Town

Much of the town, as all over the island, was destroyed in an earthquake in 1881. In Chios town, the rebuilding of the rubble didn’t adhere to the old medieval architecture. But don’t let that fool you into thinking the rest of the island is the same. Still, the town has many historical sites and pleasant places to hang out during your stay.

The waterfront ringing the harbor is lined with cafes, restaurants and taverns. It’s a great area to start your morning from with breakfast by the sea. At the end of day, a drink while looking at the city lights reflected on the harbor water is a nice way to wind down and recount the day’s memories. A unique place to have a meal is Milarakia next to a set of stone windmills on the road toward Vrontados.

A medieval town center preserves the narrow passageways and a central courtyard with cafes and shops. Additionally, a pleasant central park with lots of trees and park benches is ringed by cafes. During soccer matches, TVs are moved to the outdoor seating areas and a jolly social atmosphere ensues.

Places to visit include the Byzantine castle, which surrounds the old city that includes Turkish baths and Turkish style houses. Turkey is just 12 miles across the sea from Chios, and the Turks had a prominent presence including the brutal 1822 massacre of the Greek residents.

There are several worthy museums to hit: the Archaeological Museum, appropriately enough on Museum Street. The descriptions of artifacts are in both Greek and English. The Byzantine Museum in a 19th century Ottoman mosque by the central square. The Guistiniani Museum by the central gate of the castle, featuring Byzantine and Genovese art.

Nea Moni Monastery

In the afternoon, you can get out for a scenic drive. All the little shrines you see along the road, which are each unique and often picturesque, we were told are (sadly) memorials to people who have died on the road. Where they lost their life, loved ones erected shrines.

Don’t miss driving up the hill about 15 kilometers from town to the mid-11th century Nea Moni Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Parts of the site have been preserved or restored, and parts are in ruins. It’s a nice mix to give you a sense of both the past and the time that has passed.

Try Mastiha Liqueur

For your happy hour drink or aperitif tonight, be sure to try some mastiha liqueur. There are three levels of alcohol content — the lowest brings out the most flavor of the mastic, the highest content packs a punch, and middle one is, in this author’s opinion, just the right amount of each. You will also find other mastic products in town such as candies and body care products.

Mastic trees are grown on Chios Island and nowhere else in the world.  Mastic is the sappy resin in the tree bark from which the liquor is made. Farmers bore holes into the bark, put a plastic tarp skirt around the base of the tree, then let the resin run down the trunk and collect onto the skirt. You will see terraced groves of the diminutive trees from the roads.

Day 2. Mesta and Pyrgi

Now that you’ve tried mastiha, it’s a perfect day to visit some mastic villages in the southern part of the island. The group of southern mastic villages are designated by UNESCO as places of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Mesta and Pyrgi are two outstanding and well-preserved villages that you shouldn’t miss.

Exploring these villages thoroughly will give you a good idea of the flavor of the medieval heyday of these towns. Mesta is the furthest south, so a good way to do it would be to start there and work your way back toward Chios through Pyrgi and other villages if you choose, which could include Vessa and Olympi.

Mesta

Mesta is a classic medieval mastic village and supposedly the best preserved. Here and at all of the small villages on Chios, as a visitor you must park your car outside the old city walls and walk in. The streets were built to scale for donkeys, not cars! Mesta was built in the Byzantine era (approx. 14th century) and its high defensive walls and central tower were designed on account of the pirates and Turks who were always trying to raid them and their valuable mastic stores.

If you are a wanderer who likes to get lost in mazes of cobblestone alleys, this town is for you. In the heart of the village a large central courtyard is ringed by several restaurants.

Don’t miss the Megalos Taksiarhis, aka “the big Archangels Church,” the largest orthodox church on the island and one of the biggest in all of Greece. It was built in the mid-1800s where the original castle tower had been built in the Byzantine era. The interior simply dazzles with richly painted walls, alcoves with painted statues of saints, golden fixtures, blue painted ceilings and enormous chandeliers.

Pyrgi

Now to Pyrgi, the largest of the mastic villages, and often referred to as “the painted village” because of the unique black- or gray-and-white geometrical decorative motifs on the facades of the buildings. It’s called Xysta and the designs are actually etched into the walls, not painted, in spite of the “painted village” moniker. It’s believed by some that Christopher Columbus is descended from a family in Pyrgi and spent some time in the village.

A central feature of Pyrgi is the 14th-century Church of Ayioi Apostoloi (Holy Apostles). It mimics, on a smaller scale, the architectural structure of the larger Nea Moni monastery. The interior walls and ceiling of the church are covered in frescoes.

While you’re down south, you can also stop at stunning black sand and pebble beaches near the village of Emporios.

Day 3. Drive to the northern hill towns.

This day will take you the opposite direction from Chios town as yesterday, north into the rolling hills.

The hill towns are usually built in a layout like classic medieval fortresses, or fortified cities, perched on prime hilltops. There are few roads in the island interior, so driving along the main arteries, you will encounter a number of picturesque villages you can stop to walk around in. Two larger ones that you shouldn’t miss are Anavatos and Volissos — quaint villages with impressive ruins and sweeping views.

Anavatos

Anavatos is abandoned now except to the wandering tourist and a handful of people who man the cafe and gift shop and feed the cats — truly they are everywhere on the island. A Byzantine fortress perched at the very top of a range of hills, it still was raided numerous times by pirates, and brutally sacked along with the rest of Chios in 1822 by the Ottoman Turks. Many of its ruins feel like those of mainland Europe.

Volissos

Volissos is still inhabited in large sections, and therefore has a selection of restaurants and snack shops. While Anavatos is in the interior of the island, Volissos is nearer the coast and commands authoritative views of both land and sea. You will get your exercise walking up and down the rolling topography of the town. It, too, was raided and then sacked in the 19th century. Parts of the town now lie in ruins, slowly being digested by vines and other plants. Yet it’s a picturesque setting for ghosts.

The town has a very long history, and persistent legend names it the birthplace of Homer. Even the revered Herodotus makes mention of Homer writing his epic stories here.

Extra: Easter Rocket Wars

Chios Rockets

If you visit at Easter, you can witness the renowned Rocket Wars on Holy Saturday in the town of Vrontados. You will not experience anything like this elsewhere in the world. Residents spend most of the year building and stockpiling rockets of sticks and gunpowder. On Easter Eve, buildings surrounding the two warring churches are boarded up, launch pads are installed at the two churches, and at 10:00 p.m. the war begins. The two churches, only 400 meters apart from each other, barrage each other trying to hit the opposing bell tower.  You can watch the rockets fly above you from inside the town or you can drive up Mount Aepos and park along the roadside to look down on the rocket volley.

So now you know the flavor of Chios Island and some completely unique things it has to offer. By all means, hit the Mediterranean, too. But for a more rounded experience of Greece, spend a few days on this deeply historical Aegean Island.
