Berlin is a gorgeous capital city rife with history, and a great place to visit during all seasons. No matter the time of year, there are plenty of things to do in Berlin. It can get quite cold in winter and pretty warm in summer, so be sure to refer to a Berlin packing list before your trip! 1. Admire the Beautiful Berlin Cathedral

Located on Museuminsel, and backed by the River Spree, Berlin Cathedral is one of the best things to do in Berlin. This ornate building is known for its intricate architecture, epic history and is one of the most magical places to visit in Germany.

Regrettably, the Cathedral underwent some damage during WWII, but restoration efforts began on the structure shortly after the Berlin Wall fell. Today, you can enter the cathedral and admire the Baroque style interior, see the Hohenzollern crypt (the final resting place of the Hohenzollern royal family), and explore the cathedral’s onsite museum.

Don’t miss the incredible views from the roof, overlooking Berlin’s historic center! Berlin is sheer magic for all lovers of history.

2. See the Abandoned Berlin Tempelhof Airport

One of the best things to do in Berlin is paying a visit to the former Berlin Tempelhof Airport. This was one of the first airports in Berlin and many important events happened here. One of the Wright brothers actually held a flight demonstration here! The airport’s building is very impressive and is considered an architectural masterpiece. However, the airport has been closed for more than ten years.

Nowadays, “Tempelhofer Feld” is the largest public park in Berlin. You can go biking, skating, flying kites, or a number of other activities! All the things you can do here make this former airport a great place for everyone. The best part is that you can do this on a real runway. Not to mention, it’s free! It’s a great pit stop, even if you’re only spending one day in Berlin.

3. Smell the Roses at Botanical Garden Berlin

The Botanical Garden and Botanical Museum in Berlin is a magical place that will sing to all of your senses. With over 20,000 species of native and non-native plants, you’re sure to discover something new and beautiful. It is one of the largest and most extensive botanical gardens in the world, and certainly worth a visit if you find yourself in Berlin! Relax by the lake, meander down the picturesque trails, or simply admire the impressive amount of plant species in the gardens.

4. Check out Brandenburg Gate

Brandenburg Gate is one of Berlin’s most iconic monuments. It is not only the city’s sole surviving historical gate, it also symbolizes the former division of East and West Berlin and its subsequent reunification.

There is a sculpture on top of the gate, a chariot drawn by four horses. This Quadriga statue was taken from the gate in 1806 when French emperor Napoleon took the city. The statue was transported to Paris as a trophy of sorts of Napoleon’s victory. A few years later, in 1814 after Napoleon’s forced abdication, the statue was returned to Berlin where it has remained on the Brandenburg Gate ever since.

5. Take a Photo at Checkpoint Charlie

Particularly suitable for history buffs, Checkpoint Charlie was the best-known crossing point from East to West Berlin during the Cold War. The sandbags, booth, and flag are all based on the original site. While it is a very popular tourist site in the city, it’s still worth a quick stop. The name Checkpoint Charlie comes from the NATO alphabet (Alpha, Bravo, Charlie, etc.). Checkpoint Charlie (or, Checkpoint C) was the third checkpoint operated by the Allies.

In 1961, Checkpoint Charlie was the site of a confrontation between American and Soviet tanks. It was also a popular escape site, for those trying desperately to leave East Berlin and head West.

6. Increase your Awareness at the Holocaust Memorial

The Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe is a massive outdoor interactive structure in the middle of Berlin. It is a place of remembrance and commemoration for the six million Jews who were murdered in Europe during the Holocaust. It was officially opened on 10 May 2005, although planning for the memorial began in 1988.

The monument consists of the Field of Stelae designed by Peter Eisenman and the underground Information Centre. The Field of Stelae consists of 2710 steles (concrete blocks of various sizes) that stand on 19,073 m² (4.7 acres) of gently lowered land. You immerse yourself in this fully walkable structure from all four sides, the wave-like shape of which is perceived differently from each location.

The exhibition in the Information Centre documents the persecution and extermination of the Jews and the historical sites of the crimes. It’s a must-do for anyone who wants to learn more about the atrocities that were committed against the Jews during WWII. The outdoor memorial is suitable for any age, although children should be respectful and not climb any of the steles. The indoor exhibition is not suitable for anyone under the age of 14 years old.

Admission is free to both the Memorial and the Information Centre with free daily guided tours in English and German.

7. Visit the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church

Much more than just a church, the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church serves as an ominous reminder of the perils of war. The church was initially built in the late 19th century, a tribute to Wilhelm I, the first German Kaiser. It had five bells that rang so loudly the wolves in the zoo would howl each time they rang. During WWII, the bells were melted down for munitions.

Air raids destroyed much of the church in 1943, and the church’s main spire broke completely off. Afterward, the Allies did not want to reconstruct the church since it had been emblematic of excessive national pride. Eventually, the ruins of the original church were incorporated with a new design. This fusion of old and new serves as a memorial and a symbol of peace and reconciliation.

8. Get Lost in Kreuzberg

Kreuzberg is a trendy, hipster-ish neighborhood in Berlin. There are a lot of students, artists, and alternative crowds. It’s also a popular immigrant neighborhood, leading to its reputation as one of Berlin’s most multicultural neighborhoods. Visit Kreuzberg for the eclectic cafés and restaurants, second-hand stores, and punk-rock vibes of the neighborhood’s nonconformist history. Be sure to visit Curry 36 for some of Berlin’s best currywurst.

9. Grab a Bite to Eat at Markthalle ix

Markthalle Neun is a wonderfully unique market that offers a ‘different’ kind of shopping in the city. Its location in Kreuzberg perfectly suits its eclectic sense of community. The Markthalle places high emphasis on sustainability, local and seasonal ingredients, and a cohesive community. There are a number of street food-type vendors where you can grab a quick lunch to-go or with friends, emphasizing the importance of small-scale food production values.

10. Peruse Mauerpark Flea Market

The flea market at Mauerpark is a must-add item to your Berlin itinerary if you’re into shopping and vintage goodies. Head to the park on Sundays when the legendary Berlin attitude can be felt in the air as people amble through the stalls of vendors. Flip through old records, check out vintage clothes, or even get yourself an old-school bicycle to take to the streets of Berlin.

In the heart of Berlin’s Mitte district is the Museumsinsel or Museum Island. It is a collection of museums that were established in the 19th Century to house Prussia’s enormous collection of art and antiquities. One could think of it as that kingdom’s answer to the Roman Forum. The collection, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, comprises the Berlin Cathedral, the Altes Museum, the Neues Museum, the Alte Nationalgalerie, the Bode Museum, the Pergamon Museum, and the new Humboldt Forum. A single-day pass to visit all of them costs 18 euros and a three-day pass 11 euros more. Or, try the Museuminsel Welcome Card, which gives you 72 hours of access to the museums as well as discounts at other attractions, restaurants, and free public transportation.

Art and history buffs will enjoy seeing the collections that feature treasures from the ancient world. There is no guarantee that all the current exhibits will remain in Berlin forever, however, because the countries that they came from are requesting their return.  The most famous include the bust of Nefertiti from Egypt in the Neues Museum, the coin collection of the Bode Museum, and paintings by Monet and Manet in the National Gallery. The highlight, however, has to be the Pergamon Museum, which was specially built to house the Pergamon Altar, the Market Gate of Miletus, and the Ishtar Gate of Babylon. Visitors thus get to see and appreciate the full scale of these massive archeological finds.

One of the most interesting things to do in Berlin is taking a tour of the nuclear shelters.  In the Cold War geopolitical tensions rose between the Soviet Union and the United States with Allies. It spanned from soon after WWII, 1947 until 1991 dissolution of the Soviet Union. Both sides accumulated huge stores of nuclear bombs. The doctrine of mutually assured destruction (MAD) discouraged a pre-emptive attack by either side. But still, there was the imminent threat of nuclear war. Many countries took measures in the event that this happened.

Today, you can tour some of the nuclear shelters that were established in Berlin.  You will see everything from old air-raid shelters that were modified in the early ‘50s to shelters found in metro stations that were built as late as the ‘70s. 

Despite local authorities hoping to ease the minds of the general public, the capacity of these shelters was still restricted to a mere 10% of the population.

13. Take a Workshop at Prinzessinnengärten

Berlin’s ultimate urban garden is conveniently located in the ultra-hip neighborhood Kreuzberg. The garden, once a desolate wasteland, was transformed into a welcoming community garden in 2009. In addition to practical cultivation spaces, Prinzessinnengärten is also home to events and workshops. These focus on things like bee-keeping, food preservation methods, and composting, among others.

As the capital of Germany, Berlin is filled with landmarks and museums that reflect the unique history of the country in the last century. One of the most iconic architectures is the Reichstag, i.e. the parliament building. It’s located in the heart of the city, within walking distance of the train station and the Brandenburg Gate.

The parliament was originally built in 1894 and then refurbished in the 1960s after being seriously damaged during WWII. This is the location where the German reunification ceremony took place on Oct 3, 1990. A year after, it was once again the parliament of the country when Berlin was designated Germany’s capital city. The building features a large glass dome that opens to the public and offers a panoramic view of Berlin.

Access to the dome is free, however, visitors must sign up for a guided tour beforehand. This is a sought-after attraction and so it is recommended to register at least a few days in advance. The tour includes entrance to both the dome and the roof terrace, with an informative guided audio tour and a photo display regarding the history of the building. The entire experience lasts about an hour.

15. Stroll around Sanssouci Park

When in Germany and looking for the best things to do in Berlin, Sanssouci Park should definitely make the cut. The gardens which surround the Sanssouci Palace are an official UNESCO World Heritage Site. And you’ll also find numerous museums as well as places to sit, eat and relax. With over 3,000 fruit trees and vegetable gardens on display, the site is reminiscent of one of the many urban gardens in Berlin. However, the sheer scale and attention to detail of the gardens here are on another level. You could literally spend the full day walking around the gardens exploring all the different sections.

Getting here from Berlin is simple via the train system and it takes less than an hour. Alternatively, you can take the bus if you want to see more of the city along the way. All in all, Sanssouci Park is a landmark you definitely will regret not visiting, especially if you have more than a few days to spend in Berlin.

16. Check out the Berlin Soviet War Memorial

The Berlin Soviet War Memorial is a military cemetery in Treptower Park in the former East Berlin.

Many people know very little of the Soviets’ role in the defeat of Nazi Germany in 1945. Most are also unaware that, of the 50 million people killed in World War II, approximately half of them were Soviet citizens. Or that the final battle on the European front of the war, the Battle of Berlin, was the Russians vs. the Germans and that the Americans and British were still a long way away from Berlin.

If you know a little about that battle, you know that the Germans defended their capital ferociously and that more than 80,000 Red Army soldiers were killed in the final battles of the last month of the war. Seven thousand of those Soviet soldiers are buried in this expansive, somber site.

Yakov Belopolsky built the memorial in the Socialist Realist style to commemorate 7,000 of the 80,000 Red Army soldiers who fell in the Battle of Berlin. The monument is the largest Soviet war memorial outside of the former Soviet Union.

Visitors walk past a small statue of a grieving woman representing the Motherland to two giant granite Soviet flags below which two grieving kneeling soldiers stand guard. Sixteen stone sarcophagi represent the sixteen Soviet republics just pas the flags. A 12-meter-high statue of a Soviet soldier standing atop a crushed swastika is the centerpiece of the monument.

18. Hike up to Teufelsburg

One of the most interesting things to do in Berlin is to visit the site of Teufelsberg, an abandoned NSA Spy Tower on the outskirts of the city. It borders on dark tourism, and you can find Teufelsberg in the Grunewald Forest. The name translates to ‘Devil’s Mountain’ and reaching the site requires some hiking through the forest trails. It takes a little more than an hour to reach the site from Berlin’s city center with public transportation or you book a Teufelsberg tour that includes transportation.

Entry to the defunct spy tower costs 8€ and today the grounds are full of street art and vendors. Every wall of the massive building is covered in vibrant murals which you can scout as you ascend the tower. At the upper level is a listening station which offers a great view of the city and the surrounding forest.

The plateau on which the tower was constructed came to be when the rubble was cleared from West Berlin after World War II. Occupying Allied forces used it as fill to cover a planned Nazi military-technical college. It was never completed but was covered when efforts to blow up the Nazi building failed. Because they weren’t permitted to dump the rubble in Soviet-occupied East Germany, this was their only solution. The origin story has also spurred urban legends of secret technology found on the site which was confiscated by Cold War America. One matter of certain truth is that Teufelsberg is a great way to spend time hiking, seeing street art, and learning about the history of Berlin.

19. Topography of Terrors

The Topography of Terrors is among the most visited museums in all of Berlin. It is located on the site of the former Gestapo headquarters and tells the hauntingly somber account of what Berlin was like as the capital of the Third Reich. The museum also teaches various aspects of German national socialism, the different organizations that were considered key players (the SS, Gestapo, Reich Security), and the dire consequences of Nazi rule. Some of the exhibitions and content in the museum are quite graphic, and not intended for the faint-hearted. However, for anyone interested in history during this time, it should be high on your list of things to do in Berlin.

Admire the TV Tower

The Berlin TV Tower belongs to one of Berlin’s top attractions and serves as a good landmark for Berliners and visitors alike. If you need to know in what direction Alexanderplatz is, just look for the pointy tower.

The TV Tower, which was built in the 60’s, offers magnificent views of the city. It’s recommended to come during the day, ideally a sunny one, for the best experience. An elevator will whisk you swiftly to the height of 203 meters within 40 seconds, from where you’ll be able to enjoy not just the views from the observation deck, but also a drink in a bar. Right above, on a separate floor, you can find a revolving restaurant. It rotates slowly, making a full 360-degree turn in 30 minutes. Having a meal and observing the lovely Berlin from all sides is quite the experience.

Visiting the TV Tower can be a bit tricky since you need to plan ahead and reserve a ticket in advance for a specified time slot. You can purchase it online – a ticket for an adult currently costs €22.50. Alternatively, you can reserve it on the spot for €18.50 per adult, but it’s unlikely you’d be able to get in immediately.

Here is a list of the best activities and attractions the city has to offer so you can maximize your time when visiting.

Hike Up to Marienberg Fortress

Perched atop a hill overlooking the city lies Marienberg Fortress. This ancient castle, with its magnificent walls and towers, is a sight to behold, offering scenic views of the surrounding city and countryside.

Dating back to the 8th century, this fortress has played an important role in German history as it stood as a symbol of power. Its current structure was built later between the 13th and 18th centuries and has undergone several changes over time.

The inner court of the castle includes the ruins of an old Gothic church, a well-house, and a 13th-century Romanesque keep. Surrounding the inner court is the Fürstenbau, a Renaissance palace that was once the residence of Bavarian prince-bishops. Outside, there is a sprawling 1,300 square-meter Princes’ Garden that is decorated with statues and fountains. You can also check out the art museum and armory collections within the castle complex.

Getting to the foot of the castle hill is easy from the Old Main Bridge, but from here it’s a km-long climb. The blanket views of Würzburg city from the top are every bit worth it, though.

Take a Stroll along River Main

A walk along the scenic River Main in Würzburg is a great way to take in the city’s natural beauty. The river which passes through the heart of the old town creates a stunning backdrop for the glorious baroque architecture, churches, and squares.

The pedestrian bridge connecting the two sides of the river, the Alte Mainbrücke (Old Main Bridge) is especially picturesque. It was built in the 16th century, originally as a wooden bridge, but later replaced with stone in the 1700s. The 180-meter-long bridge has come to represent Würzburg’s romantic history and culture, making it a favorite among locals. Lined with statues of saints, and affording views of the Marien Fortress, it’s an iconic spot for snapping photos and stopping for a drink and a view of the sunset.

As you walk along the River Main, you can see the towers of St. Kilian and the Wallfahrtskirche chapel in the distance. Pearly-white swans can be seen darting through pristine waters and wildflowers line the pavement – the setting is near perfect with brilliant views around every bend.

Marvel at the Architecture of St. Kilian’s Cathedral

St. Kilian’s Cathedral is a must-visit for those looking to experience some of the best baroque architecture in Germany. Commonly called Würzburg Cathedral, this historic structure has served as the home of three different churches until its completion in 1087.

Inside, statues and holy images dating back centuries give off a feeling of sanctity even as the intricate mosaics and frescoes that festoon its walls offer a treat for the eyes. The highlight of the cathedral, though, are its two towers which make it an unmissable part of the city skyline.

St. Kilian’s Cathedral is home to some brilliant works of art, including an impressive Baroque organ, a seven-armed candelabra by Andreas Moritz, and beautifully adorned epitaphs and tombs of Würzburg’s former bishops.

Stop by at the Marienkapelle

Located in the Old Town main square, The Maria Chapel is a Roman Catholic church that dates back to the 14th century. What catches the eye first is its unique red-white Gothic exterior which paints a vibrant focal point against the backdrop of the market square.

Marienkapelle suffered severe damage during World War II but was reconstructed in the 1950s.

The interior is a subtle contrast to the outside, with soft pink and gray walls, a sweeping vaulted ceiling and a somber nave. The church is known for the sculpture of Adam and Eve, a 16th-century masterpiece by Tilman Riemenschneider.

Visit the Magnificent Würzburg Residenz

On the top of every list of things to see in Würzburg is the Residenz Palace, built during the mid-17th century out of sandstone and blue limestone. A stroll inside offers fascinating displays that chronicle centuries of Bavarian baroque design, while ornate murals on walls, ceilings, and domes provide captivating scenes depicting gods, goddesses, and grandiose architecture.

The building served as a palace residence for the prince-bishops of Würzburg until 1814. Every inch of the Residenz screams opulence, from the spectacular stucco art and marble columns to the richly embroidered fabrics and inlaid furniture. The grand staircase, chapel, and imperial hall are especially worth seeing.

Outside, the palace grounds open into manicured lawns, lovely fountains, and sculptures. You can explore the long alleys nestled among the rows of plane and chestnut trees while enjoying the peaceful atmosphere. The resulting foreground of lush gardens and myriad flower varieties in bloom create a spectacular setting for the palace.

Say a Prayer at Käppele Würzburg

Set on the Nikolausberg hill overlooking the city, the pilgrimage church is an excellent example of rococo architecture and a popular pilgrimage site. It is known for its unique octagonal structure and the fresco, depicting the Descent from the Cross and Mary as an apocalyptic woman, painted on its ceiling.

Built-in the 18th century, the Käppele Würzburg is considered one of the most important Catholic pilgrimage churches in Germany.

Inside, you can admire the intricate sculptures and paintings dotting its walls. Outside, stone stairways lead to the terrace and a lookout point with a beautiful view of Würzburg. Here, you can pause from sightseeing and take a gander at the Main River meandering through the city.

The church also houses a small free exhibition on religious art, including paintings and sculptures from the 16th century.

Sample Local Cuisine in Würzburg

Würzburg’s cuisine is as varied and flavorful as its culture, offering everything from traditional Bavarian fare to modern fusion dishes. The city’s restaurants serve up hearty plates of sausages, pork knuckle and potato dumplings, as well as lighter dishes like salads and sandwiches.

The city is also known for its wines, with white and red blends that have been produced in the region since Roman times. More on that below!

Mingle with locals while sampling traditional bratwurst dishes like Würzburger Rostbratwurst and Saure Zipfel. Try some sweet and savory baked goods such as Zwiebelkuchen (onion cake), Hefezopf (yeast cake) or Lebkuchen (gingerbread). Or, grab a stein of beer from one of many local brews on tap at a biergarten.

Explore the Wine Route Along the Main river

Did you know that Germany has a thriving wine region? Yes, the country is more than just beer, and Würzburg is where the ‘grapevine’ begins!

The Main river valley is home to numerous vineyards, with the region producing some of Germany’s best whites and reds. Tour the wine route and sample some domestic favorites, including Silvaner, Müller Thurgau, Riesling, and Scheurebe wines.

Venture out to one of the many wine estates and taste some local wines on a guided tour. Stop by a winery for an interactive and educational tasting session. Or, take a leisurely stroll through vineyards, admiring the rolling hills as you savor some of Germany’s finest vinification.

The wineries range from sprawling estates to small family-operated establishments. Soak in the wonderful landscape, learn about different grapes and wine varieties, and of course, pack a bottle or two as souvenirs for the trip back home.

Würzburg is an incredibly picturesque city with a rich history, breathtaking architecture, and a vibrant culture. 1. Asam Church

The Asam Church is a Baroque church in Munich, built from 1733 to 1746 by brothers, sculptor Egid Quirin Asam, and painter Cosmas Damian Asam as their private church. It is one of the most impressive things I’ve ever seen in person and it’s completely free to go in. It’s near Marienplatz.

2. Residenz

München Residenz is a place like no other – once the royal palace of Bavarian monarchs, it now stands as one of Germany’s most visited museums. Admired for its epic architecture and ornate interior design, visitors from around the globe flock to experience this slice of history first-hand! Like many places in Munich it was bombed and has been rebuilt. Book a private tour.

We didn’t book a private tour. We just walked around on our own. It was pretty empty as you can see from my photos. However, I wish we had taken some sort of educational tour here cause the artwork was off the charts. 

3. Nymphenburg Palace

Nymphenburg is a Baroque palace in München, Bavaria. The palace was the main summer residence of the former rulers of Bavaria of the House of Wittelsbach. And if that wasn’t enough – you can hop on an extra special gondola ride amidst Nymphenburg Palace grounds (just watch out for those Insta-worthy shots!). So visit Munich today and make your Baroque dreams come true! Get skip the line tickets.

4. Juristische Bibliotek

Looking for a stunning spot with an eye-catching history in München? Then you’re sure to find it at the Legal Library. Established way back in 1843, this insta-worthy space is free of charge – though admittance into its reading room isn’t permitted until later! 5. Siegestor

Take a trip to Siegestor in Munich and bask in the glorious victory of Bavaria! Enjoy beautiful sights that celebrate their heroic success against Napoleonic forces. This public monument makes for an ideal Instagram spot, but be sure to arrive early – you wouldn’t want your photo-op interrupted by other keen tourists looking for bragging rights on social media too!

10. View from St. Peter’s Church

The views from the observation deck at St. Peter’s Church are unparalleled – the red roofs of Old Town, Marienplatz, the city skyline in the distance. Not for the faint of heart, these views cost a whopping 3 euro and 299 steps – without a lift!

Family Friendly Hotels in Munich

Citadines Arnulfpark Munich

We stayed at Citadines Arnulfpark Munich last summer with 2 adults and 3 kids. We found our room large enough for us and were quite comfortable. There was a full kitchen, but we didn’t utilize it. There was a neat coffee machine in the lobby, and I just got my coffee there. It was nice to have our own room and put the kids in the living room on the pull-out sofa.

Wifi was included in our rate, but not breakfast.

The dryer takes a long time to dry down in the laundry room. Do not overload it.

There was a large park with playground equipment behind the hotel.

Public transportation was available right outside of the hotel.

Where to Eat in Munich

Augustiner Keller the largest beer garden in Munich. I don’t recall any of the food being that good, but this was an experience. You can eat at the restaurant located within or just hit the food window and grab food to take to a picnic table. The grab-in-go option is a much cheaper option.

Munich Hofbräuhaus is a 3-floor beer hall dating back to the 16th century, with a Bavarian restaurant, live music and an upbeat vibe. Hofbrauhaus is a great place for kids to get a pretzel bigger than their head.

15 Things to do in Munich

Marienplatz

Stroll around Marienplatz, the central square in the city center of Munich, Germany. It has been the city’s main square since 1158 and it is spectacular. Just walking around and seeing the architecture is amazing.

Glockenspiel, Munich

The two-tier Glockenspiel on Marienplatz is one of the biggest tourist attractions of Munich and a great place to go to with your family according to Stories by Soumya. This huge, mechanical clock was built into the tower of the New Town Hall in 1907 and has been a favorite among kids and adults ever since.

It consists of 32 life-sized figures and 43 bells that come to life every day to depict the wedding of a 16th century duke, a jousting match, and a traditional Bavarian dance. The figurines move and rotate to different tunes on the bells and are an absolute delight to watch. The show starts at 11 am and noon every day and lasts for about 15 minutes. During summers, there is an extra show at 5 pm. The Glockenspiel is almost like a tiny Munich ritual that you cannot afford to miss when you are here.

Viktualenmarkt

The Viktualienmarkt is a daily food market and a square in the center of Munich, Germany with 140 stalls and shops offering flowers and plants, fruits and vegetables, venison and fowl, eggs, butter, honey, fish, meat, sausages, herbs, spices, delicatessens, wine and tea. The Viktualienmarkt developed from a farmers’ market to a popular gourmet market.

Blutenburg Palace

Blutenburg Castle is an old ducal country seat in the west of Munich, Germany, on the banks of river Würm. The present complex reflects the structure of the 15th-century moated castle with its main building, with a surrounding wall with towers and spacious outbuildings, which are dominated by the chapel.

Therme Erding

Therme Erding is the second-largest thermal bath complex in Europe just 30 minutes north of Munich. Bath complex isn’t a good enough explanation because this place is a spa/water park. It is 185,000 square meters and has a wavepool & 27 slides area. The 2700 meters of slides offer three different difficulty levels for any age. The spa offers over 300 types of treatments. You can stay for a few hours or for a whole day. Prices vary on how long you stay.

BMW Museum

The BMW Museum is an exhibition in the new BMW building. It’s made up of simple displays, that do not intrude on the characteristic architecture of the museum. Over the years, the increasing number of visitors turned the BMW Museum into one of the most frequented company museums in Germany.

Oktoberfest

Oktoberfest is the world’s largest Volksfest. It is held annually in Munich for 16-18 days. The folk festival starts in mid to late September and continues on until the first weekend in October.

Dachau

Dachau is a concentration camp and it was one of the first of the Nazi concentration camps opened in Germany. It was created to hold political prisoners. It is located on the grounds of an abandoned munitions factory northeast of the medieval town of Dachau, about 16 km northwest of Munich. The memorial site is open daily from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.

The Deutsches Museum

Just south of Munich in the foothills of the Alps is the fairytale castle of Neuschwanstein. As the inspiration for the Disney’s Sleeping Beauty Castle, Neuschwanstein is a great day trip from Munich for families according to Show Them the Globe. The scenery is stunning and both kids and parents will love the views of the castle and the fun hikes around it. A tour inside the castle is a must and all the family will feel like they’re in a fairy tale!

How to get there: For families, we recommend renting a car and driving from Munich. It offers lots of flexibility for stops along the way and at just over 1.5 hours from Munich, it’s not a long journey. It’s also possible to get to by a combination of train or bus or by joining a tour from Munich.

Linderhof Castle

Intended as a vacation home, Linderhof Castle is a castle dripping in gold and built by a mad man. 

Garmisch-Partenkirchen

Garmisch-Partenkirchen is a cute town located at only one hour from Munich by train. It is surrounded by beautiful mountains so it is perfect for a day trip or weekend getaway to breath some fresh air.

During the nice seasons, Garmisch-Partenkirchen has plenty of hiking opportunities. The tallest mountain in Germany, the Zugspitze, is not far from the town and kids will love to take centenary Zahnradbahn (cable railway) to go up to the top of it.

In winter time, Garmisch-Partenkirchen becomes a ski town and amongst other facilities there is a ski school for kids. Finally, don’t leave Garmisch-Partenkirchen without visiting downtown with its nice colorful houses and cobbled stones or tasting its typical Bavarian cuisine.

Eibsee

Eibsee is one of the most beautiful lakes in Southern Germany according to the Swedish Nomad. Not only is it a beautiful lake, but also a great recreation area known for its fresh air and lovely nature. The most popular thing to do here is to rent a boat or kayak or go for a hike along the loop trail that goes around the lake. The whole walk takes about 2 hours, and I suggest going here as early as possible in order to see the most beautiful reflections in the water.

Eibsee is located at the foot of the highest mountain in Germany, Zugspitze, and just a short walk from the lake, one can take the scenic cable car up to the top.

The easiest way to get here from Munich is by car, but you could also go by train and take the bus down to the lake. I recommend renting a car though since then you can go and leave whenever you want instead of having to time public transport. There’s also a big parking area next to the lake where you only pay a few euros and gets parking all day long.

It’s perfect for families since it’s calm, easy to get to, and has beautiful nature. For families, I recommend bringing some delicious picnic, rent a boat and row out to one of the islets. From there you can get some real quality time with your family, and the kids will love to go by boat as well. If you want to stay overnight, it’s possible to stay at the Eibsee Hotel, and here you will also find a nice restaurant with a view over the lake.

Kufstein

Visiting the historic town of Kufstein in Tyrol, Austria is the perfect day trip for families from Munich. Children, especially love to explore the Kufstein Fortress with all its nooks and crannies. It’s easy to imagine life in the middle ages when walking through underground tunnels, peering down deep wells, and sitting on cannons.

Kufstein is known as the “pearl of Tyrol” and not even an hour away from Munich by car or train. Reaching the pretty cobbled lanes of the old town, with the fortress towering over it, is just a short walk over the Inn River from the train station.

Every single day at noon visitors and locals are treated to the beautiful sounds of Kufstein’s world-famous Heroes’ Organ. Situated in a tower of the fortress, this is the world’s biggest free-standing organ and can be heard up to 10 kms away. It was built after World War I as a memorial to the fallen. For this reason, the daily concert always ends with The Good Comrade.

A visit to Kufstein is incomplete without a stroll down the quaint Römerhofgasse. Eat an ice-cream, try some traditional food at the Auracher Löchl or grab a burger at Hans im Glück before heading back over the river to catch your train back to Munich.

Nuremberg

The city of Nuremberg is rich in history and architecture and is an easy day trip from Munich. The old town of Nuremberg is no less than a fairytale location. Here you will find a beautiful castle, a Town Hall and magnificent churches with an interesting history.  But the major draw to the old town are its colorful half-timbered houses, lovely squares and several pretty bridges on the River Pegnitz. Kids will love wandering around and exploring the town, especially the Hauptmarkt which has stalls selling fresh fruits, vegetables, flowers, and spices along with candies, delicious wraps, falafel, soups, hummus and more which is a treat for the foodies and little ones.

Also must visit in Nuremberg when visiting with kids is the Nuremberg toy museum displaying over 12000 toys. Kids can learn about the tradition of toy making and take part in some creative activities.

Berchtesgaden

Berchtesgaden is a beautiful town 90 miles away from Munich. 40 years ago, it was Germany’s only Alpine National Park. Since then, flora and fauna have developed almost undisturbed in the most southeastern corner of Bavaria. In the summer, visitors opportunity to experience extraordinary mountain hikes over more than 80 square miles area around Lake Königssee.

Fun German Words Worth Knowing

1. “Prost!” (bro-sd) – Though this might look the same as the “cheers” used by Northern Germans when they toast, you’ll have to soften your consonants and roll your rrs to make the Bavarian equivalent sound correct.
2. “Die Maß” (dee mass) – the Bavarian word that refers to a one-litre glass beer mug or its contents. Make sure you order a Maß if you want to drink like a true Bavarian
3. “Buam & Madln” (boo-am & mah-dlen) – the Bavarian words for boys (Buam) and girls (Madln) will come in particularly useful when you are trying to work out which is the right toilet after a few beers at the Wies’n.
4. “Semml” (semmel) and “Brez’n” (bre-zen) – bread rolls are such an important part of German life that they have a different name depending on where in the country you are! “Semml” or “Semme” is the word that is used in Bavaria.

Thankfully, not all the Alps is filled with difficult hikes at insane altitudes. Many countries have beginner hikes as well, with more difficult treks for veterans to easy-going outdoors trails. A perfect place to get a mix of all of them is Germany!

Hiking in the German Alps!

Germany offers numerous beginner hikes like Laber Mountain and more difficult hikes like Zugspitze.

Getting to the German Alps

Getting to the Alps in Germany will depend on where you’re coming from and how you choose to get there. If you live in Austria, it’s safe to say you’re aware of Eurail or will just drive. So, I’m going to focus on the people that are flying into Germany and traveling internationally. 

If you’re doing a tour of Europe and want to get there from another country, I recommend taking a train like Eurail or other service into Munich. If you’re flying straight into Germany, I also recommend flying to Munich. Basically, no matter where you’re coming from, a good entrance into the country is through Munich. The city is positioned just north of the German Alps, has a major airport so prices tend to be cheaper, and has multiple trainlines that connect into the city.

After reaching Munich, you may be able to find a cheap train ride to your destination depending on the hike you are aiming for. Otherwise, renting a car may be the best option for getting around in Germany. Having lived in Germany for three years, I can attest it’s one of the safest places to drive and having that kind of freedom is something you’ll want when you’re there.

Preparing for hiking in Germany

Getting ready for a hike in Germany depends a lot on the difficulty of the hike you want to do. So, let’s take a look at some equipment you may need depending on the hike difficulty. Before we look at each difficulty, some basics for all hikes are appropriate attire for the weather you plan on hiking in, and boots that have been worn in for hiking.

Easy – An easy hike will require any form of hiking backpack for carry the following essentials; reusable water bottle(s), hiking sticks, trail snacks, any portable electronics you deem necessary, and that’s pretty much it. The easier hikes aren’t difficult, but can be exhausting, so it helps to have something to eat and drink along the way.

Moderate – A slightly harder hike will call for the same equipment as before, but with more goods to eat/drink. Some hikes will be classified as moderate because of length, while others because of difficulty/steepness. Regardless, both types of hikes are tiring, and you should be physically in shape to handle them and have the supplies to get through them.

Difficult+ – If you’re a veteran hiker/mountaineer, you probably already know what to bring. I don’t recommend going on the difficult trails unless you’ve done numerous hikes that are moderate or below. But, in addition to the earlier mentioned equipment (excluding camping equipment as we’re only focused on trekking), you may need a harness and via ferrata if the trail has difficult terrain that requires hooking into a guide cable. 

Some of the Best Hikes in Germany

Partnach Gorge

Located just outside of Garmisch, Partnach Gorge is a somewhat easy hike that takes you through a cut in the mountain with water rushing through and scattered waterfalls. While this hike is relatively easy and will only take half an hour, you should still be cautious as there will be slippery spots! This is also the perfect addon to visiting Garmisch if you already plan on being in the area. 

Kranzhorn Erl

Kranzhorn Erl sits on the border of Germany and Austria, giving you a rewarding view from the peak of both countries. The shortest trail on the mountain will take roughly 3 ½ hours to hike and is fairly easy going. There is also the option to stay the night in a hut near the summit if you want to catch the morning sunrise on a peak in the Alps.

Hollentalklamm Gorge

The “relative” of the Partnach Gorge, Hollentalklamm is also located near Garmisch. However, this gorge has a number of hikes ranging in difficulty and length. I recommend checking out Grainau to see some of their trails and find one that works for you!

Laber Mountain 

There is a gondola that takes you to the top of this peak, but that’s not why you’re here! Thankfully, you get to skip the crowds of people lining up for the easy way and instead get to enjoy the numerous views on the hike up. Expect a two to three-hour hike to ascend this mountain and be prepared to be met with an amazing view!

Hoher Kranzberg

This is an easy hike and very scenic! There are a few trails to take, but the loop trail allows you to bypass a lake and have a nice place to relax during your hike. It can be lengthy though, so be prepared for a decent amount of time to hike. 

Zugpsitze

 This was one of my favorite places to see and is the highest peak in Germany! Like the Kranzhorn Erl, Zugspitze lies on the border of Germany and Austria. This hike has some difficult parts though and should be planned for well in advance. There are also a few moments where the heights can be overwhelming, so this might not be a good hike if you have a fear of high places. 

Safety in the Alps

I love hiking and being outdoors! The Alps is the perfect place to experience those outdoor adventures and have fun! But the priority when hiking or doing any activity with a risk of danger should be safety. Always ensure you’re ready for the most common problems that may occur. Have a form of communication ready in case of problems and numbers to contact in an emergency. Also make sure you have a map of the area and any equipment you need for the weather you’ll be in!

1. Admire Graffiti at Urban Nation

Graffiti is a part of Berlin’s culture and you’ll find it everywhere from socialist blocks to family-friendly playgrounds. The first museum dedicated to graffiti calls Berlin home and with good reason. Urban Nation is free to the public and celebrates the work of unique artists such as Ron English, Bled le Rat, and even Banksy. Take a stroll through the museum to learn more about this free and unique art form.

2. Bike By the Berlin Wall

No trip to Berlin would be complete without a visit to the Berlin Wall. While you can tour the wall on foot, it’s actually a more memorable experience to rent a bike and cycle down the Berlin Trail. This is a double row of cobblestones that mark the wall around the city. Start on the East side to see a part of the wall that’s still standing and is known for its iconic artwork. Make sure to keep an eye out for the memorial markers that are set into the ground near the wall as well. They were placed to serve as a marker for people who died while trying to cross.

3. Get Naked in Stadtbad Neukolln

Shed some inhibitions and enjoy a few hours in the most beautiful bathhouse in Berlin. Once inside, you’ll leave your clothing behind and fully pamper your body. The Russian-Roman and Greek pools, saunas, and steam rooms offer a relaxing experience for the weary traveler. Also, if you don’t mind being with other people also sans clothing, you’ll find Stadtbad Neukolln as one of the most unique bathhouse experiences in Europe. Even if the nudity isn’t for you, the amazing architecture of the bathhouse is spectacular and worth visiting.

4. Explore New Flavors at Schwarze Traube

German food isn’t always thought of as being particularly adventurous, but you can enjoy amazing drinks with the off-menu cocktails here at Schwarze Traube. Almost every street in Berlin has an underground bar, but one of the best and most unique would have to be Schwarze Traube located in Kreuzberg. It’s spread over three rooms and the art is cobbled together from a variety of flea markets. You end up with an atmosphere that feels a bit hipster for sure, but the cocktails are what those who are in the know visit for. You won’t find a menu, but instead, tell the owner your favorite flavors, and he’ll mix up an amazing concoction just for you.

5. Take a Cruise on a Houseboat

Berlin is a tangle of canals and waterways that you can explore when you’re in the area. Located off the River Spree, take a trip on the wooden Wasserkirche houseboats. They’re almost silent, making for a relaxing trip that’s also loaded with snacks. As you travel through the canals, you’ll enjoy a cruise on the water and enjoy a history lesson as you travel past the Molecule Man sculptures.

6. Tour the Reichstag Building

If you enjoy amazing architecture, or even if you’re not much of a history buff, the Reichstag Building is guaranteed to be one of the unforgettable sites you visit in the city. It’s now where Parliament sits and features a glass dome to represent its commitment to transparency. The entrance here is free of charge, but you’ll want to book a tour to get the full experience. With a tour, you’ll learn much more about the history and construction of the building. Finish your tour by stopping by the coffee shop, which is open to the public.

These are a few of the unforgettable and unique things to do while you’re in Berlin, Germany. Although Berlin has a rich history, it also has an amazing underground scene that is shown in the art, food, and culture today. With this list, you can experience the best of both worlds. Chances are, you won’t find anywhere else in the world quite like Berlin.

5 Super Random Holiday Destinations

For a radioactive holiday visit: Chernobyl

Why not visit the site of the worlds worst ever nuclear disaster? On 26th April 1986, reactor number 4 at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant exploded, killing many people at the plant and led to a massive radioactive fallout (thirty to forty times the amount released at Hiroshima). The fallout spread over a massive geographical area, killing and harming thousands more in the following years. Twenty years later the levels of radioactivity have died down and the Ukrainian government is now allowing select groups of visitors into the area on organized tours.

Why not holiday in a secret state? Part of the fun of a visit to North Korea is to expect the unexpected, so go with the flow and you will be rewarded with an eye-opening tour. Appreciate Pyongyang’s massive main square, where military parades are held, visit the captured US spy boat, USS Pueblo, tour the sets of the film studio and ride the impressive chandelier-lit metro. Pay your respects to the 20m-tall statue of Kim Il Sung, visit his former home and mausoleum at the Kumsusan Memorial Palace and meander through the endless corridors of the International Friendship Exhibition which houses the gifts given to him and his son, Kim Jong Il. A highlight is Panmunjom in the DMZ where you gaze across the border at the stony-faced South Korean guards and may even enter one of the huts that straddles the border. Learn about life on a cooperative farm and make sure you buy some propaganda as a memento of your visit.

The grounds and buildings of the Auschwitz I and Auschwitz II-Birkenau camps are open to visitors in their entirety, with the exception of several blocks in Auschwitz I that house the administration, Museum departments, and storage. There is generally access to all barracks at Auschwitz II-Birkenau. The duration of a visit is determined solely by the individual interests and needs of the visitors. As a minimum, however, at least one-and-a-half hours each should be reserved for the grounds and exhibitions of Auschwitz I and for the Birkenau site. It is necessary to visit both parts of the camp, Birkenau and Auschwitz, in order to acquire a proper sense of the place that has become the symbol of the Holocaust. Auschwitz I is where the Nazis opened the first Auschwitz camps for men and women. In the Birkenau camp, everything happened on a magnified scale. You can go to the Auschwitz Camp yourself and join one of the groups that is formed at the gate, you can walk the camp alone, or you can be picked up at your hotel in Krakow, Germany by a guide.

La Tomatina is the biggest food fight in the world. Its normally occurs each August in Spain. La Tomatina can be considered as one of weirder holidays that ever happen in Spain. La Tomatina involves throwing, smacking, tossing and barraging friends and strangers alike with overripe tomatoes. It takes about a week long holidays or festival where everyone enjoys themselves with food fight. The Apex or climax of this event is when some climbing a greased pole to retrieve the ham set on top.. There are rules involved, but in truth, it is every man for himself. After two hours or so of a tomato throwing and bombardment, firefighters clean the crowds and streets down by spraying gallons of water over the tomato covered participant. How this holidays/festivals started no one knows exactly. But is said to honor the town’s patron saint.

If you like goats go to: Puck Fair, Ireland

In Ireland, you can find a holiday celebration that honors someone. But in this old kind of tradition, this honoring centers on a goat. Ireland’s oldest fair is called Puck Fair and is held every year in Kilorglin. This holiday celebrates a beast that centuries ago escaped from a herd and alerted villagers of impending pillage. How this event started was not certain, it lasts for three days and then the town goes back to normal!

So there you have it, 5 out of the box holiday destinations. And in case you are wondering, it is the first two I wouldn’t go to. Would you?
