In Puerto Rico, family is everything ,and so is food, so it’s natural for the whole crew to pile in the car and head to the countryside for a relaxing weekend day of eating and drinking. There’s a word for it: the verb “chinchorrear” means to eat and drink local specialties at multiple rustic roadside stops called chinchorros.

There are many popular self-guided routes that are easily accessible from all over the island, and every family group has their favorite. The most famous is probably Cayey’s “Ruta de Lechón,” also known as the “Pork Highway.” There are coastal routes featuring beach stops and seafood shacks, and a longaniza route in mountainous Orcovis that celebrates the island’s traditional spiced sausages tinged with annatto.

Our hosts chose the Ruta Gastronomica de Naranjito, which highlights the delicious, historic, and varied stops along PR-152, is super close to San Juan, and definitely offers plenty of pork.

Ruta Gastronomica de Naranjito

Our trip started at our hotel in Old San Juan, and after a 45-minute drive across the beautiful Puente Atirantado, a newly renovated cable stay bridge that spans the Río de la Plata, we found ourselves in the green foothills of central Puerto Rico. Once past the city of Naranjito, we turned onto Route 152, and our eating tour began.

Epic Longaniza Sausages at El Rancho Don Nando

Our first stop was the furthest out, allowing us time on the road to build up our appetites for the afternoon ahead. After turning off of the main road and twisting and turning a bit more, we hit El Rancho de Don Nando, a classic, family-owned smokehouse with great views and incredible food. The family and staff welcomed us with bites of their renowned smoked chicken and pork longaniza, then we sat down at a picnic table for a meaty feast of arroz guisado (fried rice) con longaniza y carne, habichuelas (stewed beans with pumpkin), and carne ahumada (chunks of smoked pork) that left our chins gleaming with pork fat. This spot does not serve alcohol, so ice down a cooler full of Medallas, Puerto Rico’s favorite beer, to bring along. There’s a huge list of traditional homemade desserts on offer, including flan de queso and jiggly sweet coconut tembleque–I was glad I grabbed a cup to eat in the car later.

Lots of folks line up to grab Don Nando’s outstanding smoked meats and sausages to go, and they also do a lot of business selling plants, like pascua (poinsettia) during Puerto Rico’s extended Navidad holiday season.

Fine Dining with Puerto Rican Soul in Cedro Arriba de Naranjito

Tapas at Asador San Miguel

Asador San Miguel

Next stop: Asador San Miguel, in Cedro Arriba, where Chef Rey Santo serves tasty, Spanish-style tapas and plates from the kitchen, the grill, and the smoker, like croquetas, steaks, and crunchy pork chicharrón with fresh ginger and guava sauce. The extensive wine cellar is a welcome bonus, and the spectacular vistas and gardens are worth the trip to this higher-end stop on your journey. There’s even a helicopter pad if you decide not to drive.

A Rainbow of Mojitos at La Casita 152

Mojito flight casa 152
Mojitos at La Casita 152 | Photo by Lisa Futterman

After Asador, we wound our way downhill past dozens of other restaurants and landed at La Casita 152. Homar Ayala Hernández and his family took over this classic roadhouse in 2023 and updated the offerings. We enjoyed some fun traditional snacks (croquetas with pepper aioli, and queso frito, a typical dish of fried cheese, elevated with a bacon dulce de papaya on top).

We loved choosing from so many colorful mojitos–everyone in our group had a different favorite on the mojito flight, from coconut to acerola, a native Puerto Rican cherry. If there’s passionfruit on the list, I’m going to drink it, and my fresh parcha juice mojito was perfectly tart and tangy.

The front of the restaurant is unpolished and charming, like an old school roadside bar, but when you head to the back, you’ll find a huge, shady wooden deck complete with a porch swing and a breezy view of Las Lágrimas waterfall and the mountainside beyond.

A Traditional Chichorro with Sangría, Shots, and Fried Bocaditos

Caldosos
Photo from Caldosos

We had no room left for a stop at Caldosos, perhaps the most well-known destination on Route 152. Serving house sangría, rum punch, and a lengthy menu of frituras (fried snacks) like sorullos (corn fritters), empanditas, crispy plantain tostones, and bacalaitos (salt cod fritters) since the 1990’s, this spot would be an iconic place to take a shot of traditional chichaito, or “quickie,” the super strong combo of white rum and anise liqueur that often punctuates a chinchorreo and helps initiate the spontaneous salsa dancing that often takes place into the evening.

Naranjito Road Trip Tips:

Las Lagrimas Waterfall
Las Lagrimas Waterfall | Photo by Lisa Futterman

Try the local drinks

Along with ubiquitous bottles of Medalla beer, colorful mojitos, and powerful shots of chichaito, in many spots you’ll find Jalda, a sweet creamy mountain liqueur in flavors like pistachio and coffee. Though it tastes like dessert, it packs a punch, so don’t be tempted to overindulge. Another local hooch served in shots, pitorro is a molasses-based moonshine rum infused with fruits and spices, often from a recipe passed down through generations. Our hosts at Don Nando placed a bottle on the table while we dined so we could try a nip of their family’s elixir–don’t be surprised when cups are passed around on your chinchorro visit.

Schedule a side trip

Head to Hacienda Cacaotera Terruño for a reservation-only visit to a family-run cacao farm, and check out how cocoa beans are grown, harvested, roasted, and made into artisan chocolate bars.

Turn your day trip into a weekend getaway

Choose a vacation rental or boutique villa. Search “Naranjito” on VRBO or click here for a variety of options vetted by the Naranjito office of tourism.

Anyone can have the chance to soak up mountain culture and hop from bar to bar like a local. Just choose a designated driver, roll down the windows, and go by car, or rent a party bus and make a scene. Either way, pack a cooler full of cold water, cue up a playlist of reggaeton, salsa, and some Bad Bunny, map out a route, and hit the road.

A good vacation leaves you feeling refreshed, but have you ever felt like you were on top of the world?

Shake up your all-inclusive Viva vacation by tacking on a tour through local lagoons and farms with a final destination atop the luscious Montana Redonda. While you’re not actually on top of the world – or even the largest mountain in the country – the panoramic views paired with a hammock swing and a complimentary drink will make you feel like it.

For $75 per adult, or $25 per kid, this five-hour excursion gives you a taste of the landscape with a side of adrenaline, from ranch-grown coconuts and Dominican cigars to ziplines and swings over the mountain’s edge.

What You Need to Know Before the Trip

Excursion to Montana Redonda
Excursion to Montana Redonda | Photo by Meagan Wristen

First of all, you have to wake up early by vacation standards. Our group met in the lobby of Viva Miches at 8:15 a.m. and climbed into the back of the safari truck. The guides were friendly, knowledgeable, and timely down to practically the exact minute for all our activities along the route. Plus, they spoke Spanish, English, and French!

At each stop, the guides passed out complimentary water and soft drinks, but I would also recommend loading up on breakfast or bringing snacks. Most importantly, bring cash to pay for activities like ziplining. The restaurant atop the mountain is also cash-only. (We learned the hard way.)

As for footwear, the excursion is not too intensive. Wear shoes that you feel comfortable in while walking across sandy beaches, up hills, or even ziplining.

First Stop: Laguna Limon

Laguna Limon

Enjoy a leisurely boat ride through Laguna Limon with great views of the mountain. We charted a path through the lagoon and popped out on the oceanside, arriving at the beautiful Playa El Limon.

Snap photos and take in the gorgeous crescent-shaped shoreline as waves wash over the tide pools and soft sands. This is just a quick sight-seeing stop to start the day, but our guide said you could also ride here on one of their ATV tours.

Dona Teresa Ranch

Dona Teresa Ranch
Dona Teresa Ranch | Photo by Meagan Wristen

A short drive away, we stopped at the Dona Teresa Ranch, which grows plantains, coconuts, chocolate and more.

Enjoy an interactive demonstration where you get to taste fresh coconut dipped in honey and sample some coconut oil on your skin. You even get to watch them prepare coconut milk and drink it fresh.

Lastly, the demonstration ends with a shot of mamajuana (yes, with an ‘m’): an alcoholic drink made with rum, red wine, honey, and herbs. Although I wasn’t keen on taking a shot on my mostly empty stomach at that time of the day, I have to say that the combination of flavors made it one of the easier shots I’ve taken. Arriba!

Rice Plantation

Rice Plantation
Rice Plantation | Photo by Meagan Wristen

Then we drove through lush jungle and farmlands to visit a local rice plantation. Looking across the fields of rice and examining the levees, I realized for the first time that I actually had no idea how rice was harvested and processed.

Chickens grazed on the rice that laid to dry outside as our guide explained the irrigation system and harvesting machinery. Inside the plantation, we watched workers use machines to process the rice for human consumption.

Coffee and Cigar Bar

Coffee and Cigar Bar

Next up, stop by a roadside cigar bar where you can watch as the cigars are prepared, rolled and cut. If you’re not interested in their selection of free cigars, don’t worry. There’s also complimentary coffee and tea.

The shop inside also has a variety of local goods and souvenirs. You can sample coconut oils in a variety of delightful scents, or take home a bottle of mamajuana.

Montana Redonda

Now that you’re buzzing on coffee, cigars, mamajuana, or a combination of the three, it’s finally time to begin the real adventure: the 900 foot climb up Montana Redonda.

The bumpy ride up the mountainside offers breathtaking views – literally. You might catch yourself holding your breath as the truck crawls over steep, rocky inclines and you find yourself at the same altitude as the hawks flying through the peaks and valleys.

Montana Redonda
Views from Montana Redonda | Photo by Meagan Wristen

The truck broke into applause when we arrived at the peak of Montana Redonda. From here, we were free to take in the view, relax, and explore. Our guide even brought along some rum and mixers for everyone.

Several swings encircle the mountain’s peak. Just slide in between the lap-belt for safety, and swing towards the skies. You can also lounge in a hammock or climb to the top of the viewing tower for an even better view.

The zipline and bikes cost $20 USD in cash. There are a couple stalls to peruse jewelry and souvenirs, and a small restaurant that’s also cash only.

Conclusion

The Montana Redonda 360 excursion is the perfect way to escape the resort bubble, learn about local agriculture, and soak up the natural beauty of this tropical paradise. It’s well-suited for most age groups, with the exception of young children. Plus, you’ll be accommodated at every stop by friendly guides who know a great amount about the local area. If you’re looking for an excursion that leaves you with unique experiences while still returning you to the resort by the afternoon, then this is it.

Grapevine, Texas, truly comes alive in the fall with GrapeFest, the largest wine festival in the Southwest. The festival’s wine train is a unique experience, offering scenic rides paired with exquisite wines. Stroll down Main Street and indulge in the local culinary scene—I highly recommend eating at one of the charming bistros. And for some family fun, check out Meow Wolf, Great Wolf Lodge, Gaylord, or Chicken and Pickle. You can also go shopping at Grapevine Mills Mall.

4. Belize: A Snorkeler’s Dream and More

Belize in the fall is a tropical dream without the intense heat. The snorkeling here is world-class, with the Belize Barrier Reef teeming with vibrant marine life. Adventure seekers can also float through ancient caves on a tubing tour, which is as thrilling as it is unique. And when it’s time to relax, indulge in one of the country’s many amazing spas for a rejuvenating experience. We recommend staying at Naia Resort and Spa in Placencia Belize.

5. Fredericksburg, Texas: Wine Country Bliss

Panama is not near as humid in the fall, making it an ideal time to visit. The Panama Canal is a must-see marvel, but don’t overlook the country’s incredible biodiversity. Spot monkeys and sloths in the lush rainforests, then head to the pristine beaches for some sun and surf. Panama City is also a rising foodie destination, with a vibrant culinary scene that will make any food lover’s heart skip a beat. We recommend staying at Bristol Panama.

If you’ve been daydreaming about a Caribbean getaway where pampering and parenting can coexist peacefully, let me introduce you to Seven Stars Resort in Turks and Caicos. This five-star property on Grace Bay Beach delivers the kind of vacation that makes you want to check listings for beachfront real estate you’ll never afford.

Between its award-winning dining, full-service spa, and family-friendly features, Seven Stars is the kind of resort that works for both romantic escapes and family vacations. Here’s everything you need to know before booking.

Why Stay at Seven Stars Resort on Grace Bay?

Seven Stars Resort Turks and Caicos

Seven Stars Resort is located on Grace Bay Beach, which consistently ranks among the most beautiful beaches in the world. White sand, turquoise waters, and calm waves make it ideal for both lounging adults and sandcastle-obsessed kids.

The resort provides:

 • Plush loungers and umbrellas
 • Family cabanas stocked with cocktails and water (extra fee)
 • Attentive beach service that doesn’t require waving frantically like you’re flagging down a taxi
 • Floaties for the pool and for the ocean.

Seven Stars Resort Rooms & Suites

The accommodations at Seven Stars Resort strike the perfect balance of luxury and practicality, especially for families.

Spacious Suites with Kitchens

Choose from one- to four-bedroom suites featuring full or galley kitchens. This is perfect for families who don’t want to eat every meal at a restaurant (translation: your toddler can still eat cereal in their pajamas). The kitchens are stocked with pots, utensils, silverware, cups, a Nespresso, and more.

In-Room Washer and Dryer

Yes, you read that right. No more packing 12 swimsuits per kid. A quick wash and dry, and you’re back in business. It’s one of the most underrated luxuries in resort living. My unit didn’t have a washer dryer, mine has a bidet where the other units had washer and dryers. So, make sure you get one with a washer dryer if this is important.

Adjoining Suite Options

Traveling with extended family or a bigger crew? Adjoining suites make it easy to spread out without feeling like you’re running a daycare from your balcony.

Elegant Coastal Decor

Think crisp whites, cool blues, and Pinterest-worthy romantic beach chic. And if you splurge for an oceanfront view, you’ll never want to go home.

Pools at Seven Stars Resort

Pools at Seven Stars Resort
Pools at Seven Stars Resort | Photo by Meagan Wristen

Sure, the ocean is the star of the show at Grace Bay, but Seven Stars Resort knows a vacation isn’t complete without a lineup of fabulous pools. They’ve got three distinct options, each with its own personality—so you can swim, splash, or sip in peace depending on your mood.

Kid’s Pool

Let’s start with the smallest but most beloved by the under-10 crowd: the kid’s pool. This shallow splash zone is perfect for little swimmers who aren’t quite ready to battle ocean waves or cannonball contests.

Main Family Pool

The centerpiece of the resort is the large family pool, and it’s exactly what you want on a sunny Caribbean afternoon. Think spacious loungers, easy access to snacks and drinks, and room for both playful splashing and leisurely floating. It’s lively without being chaotic.

Adults-Only Pool

For those moments when you just want peace and quiet (aka no Marco Polo games at top volume), there’s the adults-only pool. Tucked away for serenity, it’s the perfect spot to sip a cocktail, read a book, or practice your best “I’m too relaxed to care” face. Add in attentive staff bringing drinks to your lounger, and you’ve basically found poolside nirvana.

Dining at Seven Stars Resort Turks and Caicos

Seven Stars is a foodie paradise with some serious credentials.

The Farm Restaurant on Grace Bay

The Farm Restaurant on Grace Bay

Recently named to TIME Magazine’s 100 World’s Greatest Places, The Farm is a can’t-miss dining experience.

 • Brunch: Fresh juices, pastries, and picture-perfect poached eggs
 • Dinner: Seasonal dishes highlighting local flavors, with options indulgent enough to justify stretchy pants

Dining here is equal parts sophisticated and approachable—aka you can order dessert without guilt.

Seven Restaurant

The resort’s namesake restaurant, Seven, is the place for an elegant meal—or, if you’re me, the place you happily stumble to every morning for their daily breakfast buffet. Fresh fruit, omelets, baked goods, and strong coffee ensure you’re fueled for a day of beach lounging or biking with the kids. By evening, Seven transforms into a refined dining experience, serving contemporary international cuisine with a Caribbean twist.

The Tasting Room at Seven

For wine lovers, the resort’s wine-pairing dinner at The Tasting Room is a bucket-list experience. Recognized by Wine Spectator, this intimate dinner pairs curated wines with a menu crafted by Executive Chef Edwin Gallardo, a two-time Caribbean Chef of the Year.

This is not your typical “house red with grilled fish” situation. Each pairing feels like a master class in flavor, and by dessert, you’ll be Googling ways to explain “wine pairing enthusiast” as a legitimate hobby on LinkedIn.

The Deck

For a more relaxed vibe, head to The Deck, the resort’s casual beachfront restaurant and bar. With ocean views that practically demand a sundowner in hand, The Deck serves up Caribbean-inspired dishes, fresh seafood, and craft cocktails. It’s the perfect spot for a barefoot lunch or sunset dinner with your toes in the sand.

The Terrace (Off-Site)

A short stroll from the resort, The Terrace is Seven Stars’ off-site dining option. This neighborhood-style restaurant and bar has a more laid-back, local feel and is a great choice when you want to switch things up without going far. Expect hearty comfort food, cocktails, and a relaxed atmosphere that makes it popular with both guests and locals.

Seven Stars Resort Spa Review

The Seven Stars Spa is where I found my happy place. My massage was, in one word, fabulous. The spa itself is airy and serene, and the therapists know exactly how to make you forget about your inbox, your to-do list, and that group text that never stops pinging. There is no hydrotherapy, nor is there a hot tub anywhere on property. Be sure to book your treatment early in your stay. Spa appointments here fill up fast.

Family-Friendly Features at Seven Stars Resort

Seven Stars shines when it comes to family-friendly luxury. Unlike some resorts that feel like an adults-only zone with kids as an afterthought, Seven Stars makes families feel welcome without sacrificing sophistication.

Highlights include:

 • Outdoor kid’s pool – A super shallow little pool for the tiniest guests.
 • Fleet of bikes – A family ride along Grace Bay is about as picture-perfect as it gets.
 • Games & books available at the front desk – From Scrabble battles to bedtime stories, the resort has you covered.
 • Playground
 • Basketball Court
 • Tennis & Pickleball Courts: I was super bummed no one in my group wanted to play pickleball with me while I was staying here. Sadly, the kids were not with me cause they would have played. I found out right as I was leaving that I could have requested to have one of the staff play with me. If I had known this, I definitely would have done this.
 • Gym – The gym had weight machines, cardio machines, and my go-to piece of equipment, a foam roller. My back always hurts after the uncomfortable plane ride and a foam roller is a great way to work it our or a visit to the spa!
 • Water Activities – Paddleboards, kayaks, and more and included in the price of your stay.

Parents can relax knowing the kids are entertained, while kids have enough options to keep boredom at bay.

The Staff at Seven Stars Resort

One of the standout features of Seven Stars is the staff. Every single interaction I had felt warm, genuine, and helpful. The employees here seem happy, and it shows. Happy staff = happy guests, and it truly elevated the whole experience.

Is Seven Stars Resort Worth It?

Water activities at Seven Stars Resort

Absolutely. Seven Stars Resort in Turks and Caicos blends luxury and family-friendly amenities in a way few resorts manage to pull off.

You get:

 • A prime location on one of the world’s best beaches
 • Award-winning dining and wine experiences
 • Spacious suites with practical perks like kitchens and washers
 • A world-class spa
 • Family-friendly touches that make life easier

It’s the rare place where you can sip champagne at sunset while your kids are happily splashing in their pool. In other words, vacation balance achieved.

Quick Tips for Booking Seven Stars

 • Book early for The Tasting Room and spa treatments—they sell out.
 • Upgrade to a suite with a kitchen for ultimate convenience.
 • Reserve a family cabana at least once—the cocktails alone are worth it.
 • Take advantage of the bikes—especially if you want to justify an extra dessert at The Farm.

When you think “Caribbean all-inclusive,” your mind probably jumps to glitzy resorts with infinity pools, champagne brunches, and waiters who somehow remember your favorite cocktail after day one. Viva Miches by Wyndham isn’t quite that. Instead, it’s a more low-key, family-oriented resort in an lesser known area of the Dominican Republic.

I recently spent a few days here, and while we had a good time, I wouldn’t call it a luxury getaway. It’s more of a solid family vacation spot—especially if your priorities are keeping the kids entertained and never worrying about where your next meal is coming from. So if you’re curious about what Viva Miches is really like, here’s the honest scoop.

First things first: getting to Viva Miches takes time. It’s about an hour and a half from Punta Cana International Airport, and the drive feels even longer if you arrive after a long flight. The hotel is tucked away in Miches, a region still being developed as a tourism hub.

Tip: Arrange transportation directly through the hotel. Do Not Take an Uber—trust me on this one. If for some reason the hotel can’t get you take a taxi not an Uber.

The upside to being far from the airport? Miches feels untouched compared to the more crowded Punta Cana area. The beach, Playa Esmeralda, is beautiful and peaceful. The tradeoff, of course, is the distance.

The Resort Vibe: Casual, Not Luxe

Viva Miches by Wyndham
Viva Miches by Wyndham Room

Viva Miches is modern. Rooms are clean, comfortable, and come in a few categories:

 • Oceanfront – Only 16 of these, and if you want the best view, this is the way to go.
 • Ocean View & Garden View – Decent choices if you don’t mind a more modest setup.
 • Comfort Rooms – Budget-friendly, but basic.

Rooms sleep up to four people, and connecting rooms are available for families. A few quirks worth knowing:

 • No Kleenex, no hair conditioner—pack your own.
 • Water dispensers are everywhere, but the taste changes depending on which one you use. Bring a water bottle.
 • Housekeeping comes once daily.

It’s fine, but if you’re expecting fancy bath amenities or turndown service, you won’t find that here.

Food & Drink: All-Inclusive Convenience

Latin Fusion
Latin Fusion at Viva Miches by Wyndham

Like most Wyndham Viva resorts, this one is fully all-inclusive. That means you’ll never go hungry, though the dining is more about convenience than culinary magic.

 • El Lago Buffet – The main hub for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The pizza is the best thing they have here.
 • Snack Bar – Perfect for grabbing something quick during the day or late at night (yes, it reopens from 11 pm – 7 am).
 • Specialty Restaurants – Atlantis (seafood), Latin Fusion, and Oriental add some variety, but reservations are limited. Latin Fusion was by far the best of the three we tried. Atlantis was the worst.
 • Bars & Coffee – Bar Placita runs from 7 am – midnight (alcohol starts at 10 am). There’s also a coffee shop from 9 am–9 pm, which was one of my favorite spots.

Not included: the spa, cigar bar, and (at least for now) the ice cream shop. As of now, there is no room service but I believe it will be coming sometime in the future.

Pools, Beach & Splash Fun

Pool at Viva Miches by Wyndham

The beach is by far the highlight here—wide, quiet, and exactly the kind of Caribbean shoreline you hope for. The main pool opens at 7 am, along with the two Jacuzzis (not heated). At the pool they have water aerobics everyday and Zumba.

Entertainment: Family-Focused

Nightly Entertainment at Viva Miches

Evenings center around La Placita, with a kids’ disco and themed shows starting at 9:30 pm. Afterward, the party continues until 11:30 pm, then moves to the Shot Bar, which stays open until 2 am with games like darts and foosball.

For families, this setup works really well—kids are entertained early, and parents can sneak in some adult fun later.

Kids & Teens

Kid's Club at Viva Miches by Wyndham
Kid’s Club at Viva Miches by Wyndham

This is where Viva Miches really earns its stripes.

 • Kids Club (ages 4–12) runs from 9:30 am–6 pm. Parents with kids under 3 can join them inside. This water playground is located at the kid’s club. If your child is under four years old they can still play here but a parent must be with them.
 • Teen Club (ages 11–17) offers hangout space and activities (parents allowed). They’ve got table games and playstations.

Basically, if your goal is to keep your kids busy while you sip coffee in peace, this place delivers.

Sports & Activities

Pickleball fans, take note: you’ll be playing on a tennis court with a temporary net. The paddles provided are wooden, so if you’re particular, bring your own gear. Archery and paddle are also available, but all activities require reservations at the front desk.

Again, casual fun, not high-end sports facilities.

They also have a decent gym with a guy on hand that will help you with the machines if you do not know what to do.

Paddleboarding and kayaking at Viva Miches by Wyndham

Down at the beach are kayaks, paddleboards, surfboards, and boogie boards. All of them are included in the all-inclusive and they provide life jackets. Available from 9 am–5:30 pm.

Excursions

Montaña Redonda
Montaña Redonda | Photo by Meagan Wristen

If you want to explore outside the resort, Miches has some gems worth checking out:

 • Montaña Redonda – A hilltop with panoramic views, swings, and hammocks (Instagram gold). This is the one we choose to do.
 • Laguna Limón – Great for birdwatching.
 • Los Haitises National Park – Stunning scenery and eco-tours.

Excursions are easy to book through the hotel.

The Spa

Not included in the all-inclusive plan, but available if you need downtime. I had an extremely relaxing massage here one afternoon. The staff was super nice.

There’s also a sauna open from 5–8 pm over in the gym. You do have to reserve the sauna in advance.

Who Is Viva Miches For?

Atlantis
Atlantis at Viva Miches by Wyndham

Here’s where I’ll be honest: if you’re looking for a luxury resort with over-the-top service and endless fine dining options, this probably isn’t the right fit. The distance from the airport and the more modest amenities may not suite you.

But if you’re:

 • Traveling with kids who need daily entertainment,
 • Looking for a quieter, less touristy part of the Dominican Republic, or
 • Happy with a casual, all-inclusive setup…

Then Viva Miches can be a good choice. Check current rates.

We had a nice time, but personally, I would have preferred something a little more upscale and closer to the airport. Still, for families who value convenience, activities, and kid-friendly vibes over luxury, it’s worth considering.

Arrival

When we arrived at the resort for the first time, there were all sorts of characters from Sesame Street to greet us. This is because Beaches is one of their proud sponsors. The other, younger, children were very excited to see them. I’m not sure if this is something that happens at the main entrance of Beaches Negril every day, or just sometimes for certain guests.

Music was playing, and there were dancers that waved us on toward the pools and hotel rooms. It was one of the grandest entrances I’ve ever experienced, and it excited me for the vacation to come.

Beaches Negril regular room

Beaches Negril Hotel Rooms

There are over a dozen different types of hotel rooms and suites at Beaches Negril. Surely, you can find the proper room to accommodate everyone in your party. My family stayed in one of the smaller hotel rooms. There were only three of us on that trip, after all. the bed was quite large, and we even had a patio. The room was of decent size, although this didn’t really matter because we were hardly in the room at all. Most of our time was spent in bathing suits at the pool or beach.

Throughout the entirety of our stay, there was a stray cat that would lounge around on our patio and climb on the patio railing. It didn’t bother us, although it scared me pretty good one time. I was not expecting the cat to pop up by the railing out of nowhere.

Beaches XBOX Lounge
Xbox Play Lounge at Beaches Negril

Xbox Play Lounge

While roaming around the resort, my family came across the Xbox Play Lounge. We walked inside, where the walls were lined with screens. They kept it very cold inside the lounge, probably to keep the consoles from overheating. I don’t ever play video games, so the only time I went in there was to get my brother.

Kids Camp

This all-inclusive resort also has a kids camp. There are different programs for all ages, filled with lots of fun and activities. Jonah and I didn’t really want to join any of the programs. We would rather roam the resort independently, although the kids club did sound enticing.

Pirates Island Water Park

Beaches Negril has a fantastic water park and large swimming pools. It’s an 18,000 square foot area with plenty of fun things to do. My brother and I spent almost our entire vacation at Pirates Island. The staff at the water park, and around the resort, was very friendly.waterpark at Beaches Negril

Water Slides

The water park at Beaches Negril goes by the name of Pirates Island. With two different water slides, my brother, Jonah, made a couple of friends and had a blast. I can’t even count the number of times that Jonah raced down those water slides. Unfortunately, I only ever went down the slides once. The employees wouldn’t let people wear goggles on the slides, so that was a no for me. When you have extremely sensitive eyes, you simply can’t enjoy a water slide without goggles.

Lazy River & Hot Tub

The lazy river was also very relaxing, and I spent quite a lot of time in here. Of course, my brother and his new friend would come over and disturb the peace every once in a while. They would speed through the course of the lazy river, sneak up behind me, and attempt to flip over my inner tube. Most of their attempts were failures, although they did get me a couple of times. Obviously, it was all in good fun, and Jonah eventually let me go back to my relaxation.

The pirate-themed water park also has a hot tub, or whirlpool, that my mother and I thoroughly enjoyed. A dip in the hot tub is just what we needed after a long day of running around in the sun.

Pool at Beaches Negril

In this photo, you can see the swan floaty that got its head popped.

Two Large Pools + Poolside Snacks

Beaches Negril has two large swimming pools filled with cold, clear water. One of them had a swan floaty, although we found out it had been popped on the last day of our trip. Within one of the pools is a swim-up bar that serves up a whole assortment of drinks, including tropical smoothies.Pools at Beaches Negril

There’s also an ice-cream machine near the pool. I had at least two ice-cream cones a day, and I have no idea how many Jonah ate. Every time I saw him, he was finishing off another cone. It was tempting not to grab a cone every time I walked past the ice-cream machine, so I can’t really blame him.

My family and I also played mini golf, located near one of the main pools.

Kiddie Area

Pirates Island also has a kiddie area with a splash pad and small slides. I’d lie and tell you that we never spent any time here, but that’s simply not true. On our first night of the trip, my family and I were sitting in the hot tub nearest the kiddie area. Due to it being dark out, the splash pad was turned off. No matter, we joined some random kid in finding a way down the teensy kid slides that we barely fit through. I don’t know why we found this so fun, but we chased each other around for quite a while, even though we were too large for the slides and it kind of hurt.Beaches Resort

The Beach

The sand at Beaches Negril was lovely and white. The water was a beautiful blue, and it wasn’t too cold either. There were plenty of beach chairs, as well as cabanas. It was the perfect place to sunbathe and tan. You can sign up for all sorts of activities on and off the beach. It’s often sunny and peaceful, up until the parties, of course.

Sesame Characters at Beaches Negril

Beach Activities

There are a number of different activities that you can sign up for at a stand right on the beach. There’s snuba diving, glass bottom boat tours, and all sorts of other water sports. My family and I only ever did snuba diving and the glass bottom boat tour.

The glass-bottom boat tour was pretty uneventful. This area of Jamaica doesn’t exactly have much of a coral reef or many fish. I would not recommend taking the glass bottom boat tour because there’s really nothing to see.

Something that I would recommend is snuba diving. Although I was a bit nervous about it at first, once we were beneath the water, everything was fine. Scuba diving is when you carry the air tank on your back. Snuba diving is when the air tank is on the boat, and a tube from the tank goes down to you beneath the water. Before this trip, I had never done anything like this before. Although there was not much to see beneath the water, it was still a very cool experience.Beaches Negril

Of course, there are several other activities that you can sign up for, but my family just wanted to bum around the resort.

Food & Dining

Beaches Negril has an assortment of different places to eat. It’s a very large resort, with a number of different restaurants and shops located throughout. Although I list a few different places, keep in mind there are other restaurants that we didn’t try out, including Italian food and frozen yogurt.

Breakfast Buffet

Every morning at Beaches Negril, my family and I would exit the hotel room, excited for the new day. Then we would walk over to the breakfast buffet. The buffet consisted of traditional breakfast food; eggs, bacon, sausage, hash browns, fruit, and toast. Like any other buffet, there were also some options that were kind of out there, but people ate them, even if it wasn’t meant to be breakfast food.

image 100774867 15038496

Café de Paris

Although this cafe is quite far from the room we stayed in, my brother and I still made the journey across the resort. The cafe served up different desserts every time we entered, and each of them was splendid. They also have hot chocolate, coffee, crepes, and other sweet treats. One of the desserts that I got from the cafe was a small chocolate cake with delicious frosting and layers. It was tempting to grab another one, but I refrained.

Kimonos

Kimonos is a restaurant that serves oriental cuisine. It’s one of those restaurants where your party sits at a table around the large grill, and the chef comes out and cooks up all the food right in front of you. Of course, this included an onion volcano and a series of people having to catch food in their mouths.

It was a fairly nice restaurant, just make sure to book a reservation.

Soy Sushi at Beaches Turks and Caicos

Soy

Soy is a small sushi place at Beaches Negril all-inclusive resort. The restaurant is tucked away in a more private part of the resort. Unfortunately, we never got around to eating here, although I hear they have incredibly flavorful sushi.

Mariachi

My family and I ate at Mariachi, the Mexican food restaurant at Beaches, once. Located next to the pool, there was a short wait. We were eventually seated, and I ordered the soft tacos. They were quite good, average tacos. There wasn’t any chips and salsa, but that’s okay. My brother and I were wanting to get back to the pool anyway.

Mariachi Beaches Negril

Bar.B.Q

Bar.B.Q is also located right next to the pool. My brother and I got food here a couple of times for a quick lunch or snack. They serve burgers, BBQ chicken, ribs, brisket, and pulled pork sandwiches. A number of times, I stopped here just to order some fries.

Parties & EventsBeach party at Beaches Negril

Beaches Negril hosts a couple of different parties for its guests. One night of the trip, there was a party on the beach. There was a buffet filled with Jamaican food and a show on the stage. The characters from Sesame Street came out and partied with us, as we ate and danced. It was a very fun beach party.

During the show, there was a man who performed a dangerous balancing act. Normally you only see that kind of stuff on tv, so it’s not that scary, but watching it in real time puts you on edge. Luckily, he did great, despite falling a couple times.

Another night, guests at the resort stood by and watched a sort of parade with dancers and people who breathed fire. At one point, the guests were invited to join in the little parade around the resort. Once more, the Sesame Street characters appeared.

Chocolate Party

How could I ever forget the chocolate party? There were several tables, lined with plates, filled with dozens upon dozens of delicious chocolates. They had every kind; white, milk, and dark. My favorite kind of chocolate is dark, although both of my brothers think that dark chocolate tastes disgusting. They prefer white chocolate, which is my least favorite. I don’t even understand why it’s classified as chocolate.

Special Characters BreakfastCharacter Breakfast at Beaches Negril

Beaches Negril also has a special breakfast where kids can meet the characters from Sesame Street. Although Jonah and I were multiple years older than most of the kids at the breakfast, we still had a good time. The buffet at the breakfast was the same as the normal breakfast buffet, just slightly smaller. During breakfast, somebody came by and gave out finger puppets of the characters. When the characters came out to meet everyone, the kids got very excited. The characters took lots of pictures with people, making for a pleasant end to the breakfast.

Beaches Negril review

Beaches Negril is a paradise. It’s sunny, beautiful, fun, and family-friendly. I couldn’t ask for any more from an all-inclusive resort. The staff was friendly, and the resort catered to our every desire. I’d recommend this resort to everyone, even those without kids. Beaches Negril is a fantastic resort that people should seriously consider for their next vacation.

The Cove at Atlantis Review

The property itself is visually stunning, nestled between two private white-sand beaches. As soon as we arrived, I was impressed by the scope of the open-air lobby, oversized in every way. What was truly incredible to me was that I booked it with Marriott points. It cost me 60,000 points for one night here, plus $67.95, which was the resort fee and tax.

Sadly, no. It is not all-inclusive which is surprising considering how much it costs to stay here. There are lots of restaurants nearby and on-site.

2. Where is The Cove Atlantis located?
The Cove is part of Atlantis. It isn’t a separate hotel. It’s just a separate tower on the main property.

3. How do I get to The Cove Atlantis?
You have to fly into Lynden Pindling International Airport in Nassau. From there catch a taxi. The ride over is beautiful, especially if it’s your first time in the Bahamas.

4. What is the weather like at The Cove Atlantis?
The weather is great, but the pools are not heated so make sure you pick a warmer month to visit.

5. Is there a day pass for The Cove at Atlantis?
Atlantis does offer a day pass that must be purchased in advance. The Atlantis Day Pass allows you to enjoy Aquaventure water park, pools, and white sandy beaches. I checked prices for a random day in January and it was $190.00 for anyone 13 or older and $95 for kids 4 years old to 12 years old. To be honest, I do not think at that price it is worth visiting.

The post NEVER Take an Uber in the Dominican Republic appeared first on Mommy Travels.

]]>
Let me just start by saying: I’m all for adventure. But there’s a big difference between zip-lining through a jungle and having your kids semi-held hostage by an Uber driver in the middle of nowhere in the Dominican Republic.

On our recent trip to the DR, we stayed at a resort up in Miches — about an hour and a half from the airport. It’s remote, peaceful, and exactly the kind of place where you go to unplug and pretend you don’t have 237 unanswered emails.

Noah (my oldest) and I took the hotel shuttle, which was perfectly uneventful. (Well, other than the shuttle driver pulling over, chasing two children, and then getting into a fight with what appeared to be their mother.) The same could not be said for my younger two kids, who landed later and didn’t have the shuttle as an option. So I, in a moment of temporary parental delusion, sent them an Uber.

Spoiler alert: NEVER. DO. THIS.

It All Starts With a Delay

The Uber was already sketchy before it even started moving. The app said the driver would be there in X amount of minutes, but X quickly turned into Y, and then Z. Fine, delays happen. But once the driver finally picked up my kids, things went downhill — and fast.

Just outside of town — aka the last place with lights, witnesses, and strong cell signal — the driver pulled over on the side of the road in a fairly remote area. He told my kids (via Google Translate, because he spoke no English) that he would not take them any further unless they gave him $90 USD. Cash. Right there. On the spot.

The Shake Down

To be clear, my kids aren’t fluent enough in Spanish to realize right way what is going on — they’re more Duolingo-level “I can order tacos” fluent. Jonah tried to negotiate and offered an extra $40, thinking this guy was just trying to hustle a tip. The driver refused. He wanted $90, or no ride. He would leave them outside of a town on a dark road.

At this point, I’m on the phone with them from the resort — pacing, panicking, and trying not to let my brain spiral into every Dateline episode I’ve ever watched. I told them: just agree, I’ll figure out the money. I’m assuming he’ll take the bribe and get back on the road.

Eventually, after 15-20 nerve-wracking minutes parked in the dark on a Dominican roadside, he drives.

Remote Doesn’t Even Begin to Describe It

Noah and I are at the resort and I am losing my minds. There’s still more than an hour to go and the road ahead? Jungle. Literal jungle. Flashbacks hit hard — I was drugged in the DR back in 2017 (something I’ve never shared about publicly), and here I was again, regretting ever setting foot in this country thinking things had improved. Spoiler: they haven’t.

I alerted the hotel staff. I told them what was going on. At 10:30 PM I asked them to call the police. Their response? “We’ll try to find the number.” Cute.

Fast-forward an hour later when I am begging for the police: I realize they absolutely were not calling the police. Why? Because, surprise again — they all knew exactly what this was. A known Uber scam. And they weren’t going to mess with the status quo. (Keep in mind I don’t know about this scam yet.)

The Arrival (and the Shakedown, Part II)

While my kids are en route with a possible extortionist, I’m running around the hotel trying to pull together the $90 in cash. ATM #1 declines me. ATM #2 finally coughs up enough. I’m now armed with $60 in USD and $33 USD in Dominican pesos, which I guess equals please-don’t-hurt-my-kids money.

And just when I think it’s over, the kids call again — “He’s lost.” Oh, now he’s lost? I had to get a hotel staff member to give him directions. Technically, I begged 3 staff members to speak with him and finally, one did.

When my kids finally arrive — hours later — I literally run to security to meet them. I’m shaking, crying, thankful they’re okay. We walk to the front desk… but guess who follows us?

Yep. The driver. Onto the property. Past security. And now he’s demanding more money. Loudly.

And Still, No One Helps

The money I’ve already gathered is sitting there, on the front desk counter, as he continues asking for more money. Security watches. Hotel staff watches. No one intervenes. In fact, they pull out a taxi chart and start explaining that I still owe him money. Except I’ve already paid more than the listed rate of $140 USD.

Also, did we forget what an Uber is? It’s supposed to be cheaper than a cab.

At this point, I’ve gone from scared to full-blown furious. I push the cash toward the driver and refuse to pay another cent. He still won’t leave. Security still won’t help. The front desk starts pointing at my daughter and blaming her, which, what? WHY?

After 10 tense minutes of refusing and stonewalling, the driver finally gives up and leaves. Not because hotel security removed him — oh no. Because I screamed at him until he realized I wasn’t backing down.

So, What Did We Learn?

If you’re thinking about taking an Uber in the Dominican Republic: Don’t. Do not for any reason ever step foot in an Uber in the Dominican Republic.

Here’s why:

 • Many Uber drivers run cash scams and hold tourists hostage mid-ride.
 • Most drivers speak no English, making negotiations (or SOS calls) nearly impossible.
 • Locals — including hotel staff — often know this is happening and won’t intervene.
 • Security? More like silent spectators.
 • Only use verified hotel transportation or private transfer companies.

The Bottom Line

I truly believed the Dominican Republic had cleaned up its act in the last decade. And maybe in some areas, it has. But this experience reminded me — painfully — that scams like this are still alive and well, and tourists are still easy targets.

So take it from me: unless you want to recreate your own real-life Taken movie, DO NOT TAKE AN UBER IN THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC. It’s just not worth the risk.

FYI: Yes, I have reached out to Uber. They don’t care.

Winter has its moments—hot chocolate, cozy fires, and snow-covered landscapes that look straight out of a Hallmark movie. But let’s be real: the charm fades the second you have to scrape ice off your windshield or slip on a patch of black ice. If the cold has overstayed its welcome, it’s time to trade the frost for my favorite footwear, flip-flops. Here are seven sun-drenched destinations that will warm your soul (and your toes) this winter.

1. Belize

Forget the frostbite! Belize calls you to its warm embrace with a symphony of coral reefs, crystal-clear waters, and adventures that sound like something out of a child’s imagination book. Snorkeling in Belize isn’t just swimming; it’s like being teleported into a National Geographic documentary, surrounded by a kaleidoscope of marine life. And if you prefer terra firma, the jungle awaits with open arms. Remember, it’s not sweating; it’s your body’s way of saying, “Thank you for the vitamin D.”

2. Panama

Panama City Panama

Panama, where the engineering marvel of the Panama Canal competes with the natural wonders of its jungles. It’s a place where you can hike through rainforests in the morning and explore the cosmopolitan streets by night. Want to feel like Indiana Jones? Visit an indigenous village. (Don’t climb the waterfall! I feel on my face.) Craving for culinary adventures? The food scene here might just make you consider permanent residency. Just a heads up: the jungle might not have Wi-Fi, but it promises a better connection.

We recommend staying at the Bristol Panama in the city or at Decameron Panama at the beach.

3. Nevis: Not Just Another Caribbean Island

If the Caribbean was a royal family, Nevis would be the elegant, less flashy sibling who doesn’t need the spotlight to shine. Its beaches whisper tales of serenity and seclusion, while the historic ruins tell stories of a time gone by. Nevis is the place to go when you want to disconnect and recharge, where the only thing you’ll be uploading is your feet on a hammock.

4. Tampa Bay, Florida: Sunshine State of Mind

Ah, Florida. You might think you know it, but Tampa Bay is here to surprise you. It’s where you can have breakfast with giraffes (don’t worry, they prefer leaves over pancakes) and scream your lungs out on a roller coaster before lunch. The Florida Aquarium offers a dive into the marine life without getting wet, and the seafood? Let’s just say you’ll understand why the pelicans look so smug. Tampa Bay is where winter goes to retire.

5. The Bahamas: Choose Your Own Tropical Adventure
Cat Island Bahamas

The Bahamas are like a box of chocolates for beach lovers – you never know what you’re gonna get, but it’s all delightful. Cat Island is your go-to for quiet beaches where the waves gently kiss the shore. For those who prefer their beach days with a side of luxury, Nassau’s mega-resorts offer opulence and maybe a celebrity sighting or two. It’s a place where the hardest decision you’ll make is between the beach chair or the hammock.

6. Riviera Maya

Riviera Maya is home to what I happen to think are some of the best beaches in the world. Start your trip by staying at one of the massive resorts on the beach like Xcaret Arte, Grand Palladium Kantenah Riviera Maya, or Vidanta Riviera Maya.

If you decide you want to leave the resort head out and explore the ancient Mayan Ruins of Tulum or Chichen Itza, then cool off in one of the region’s stunning cenotes—these underground swimming holes look like something out of a fairytale. If you love marine life, snorkeling in Akumal Bay gets you up close with sea turtles, while the Great Mayan Reef (the world’s second-largest barrier reef) is a diver’s dream. And when the sun sets, Playa del Carmen’s nearby 5th Avenue is the perfect place to shop, sip margaritas, and dance the night away.

7. Costa Rica

See monkeys in Costa Rica

Costa Rica is where you go when you want adventure, wildlife, and beaches—all in one trip. Zip-line through the cloud forests of Monteverde, spot sloths and monkeys in Manuel Antonio National Park, or soak in the volcanic hot springs of Arenal. If surfing is on your bucket list, Tamarindo is one of the best places to learn. For something unique, take a night tour to see bioluminescent waters glow as you paddle through. And, of course, Costa Rica’s motto is “Pura Vida” (Pure Life), so expect to slow down, relax, and live in the moment.

Wrapping It Up

Whether you’re looking for adventure, history, relaxation, or a mix of all three, these destinations promise one thing: no winter blues in sight. So, grab your swimsuit, book that flight, and trade the snow for sun. After all, the only ice you should be dealing with is in your tropical cocktail.

Get Travel Insurance

Unfortunately, there are a lot of things that can go wrong on any trip. Be prepared for the worst with travel insurance. We use Travelex or Safety Wing (often cheaper).

Book Flights

I use Skyscanner to find flights. I use it so much, I wrote an entire guide to finding cheap flights with Skyscanner! Another option for finding deals is FlightHub.

Book a Place to Stay

I recommend using Expedia.com or Hotels.com for most hotel bookings. I prefer to book directly with Marriott when I stay there because of their excellent military discount.

If you prefer staying in a vacation rental instead, I recommend VRBO. If you are looking for a hostel, I use HostelWorld.

Choose Activities and Tours

To find great activities in any area I use Viator. If we are visiting a city with lots of popular attractions I always check CityPass, PogoPass, and GoCard to see if they have discount cards available. Groupon also tends to have a lot of local travel deals.

When I want to book a full-on multi-day tour I use TourRadar. They’ve got fantastic weekly deals. If going somewhere in Mexico or the Caribbean, I use Apple Vacations.

Rent a Car or Get a Lyft

More often than not, Lyft is cheaper than Uber. Use my Lyft link for an $18 credit! For a car rental in any country, I recommend Hertz or Discover Cars.

Save Money on Gas

Upside a free app gets you cash back on gas! Use promo code RV2Q2 to get an extra 15¢/gal bonus on your first purchase.

Get a Visa

I use iVisa to get all of my Visas.

The last couple of years we’ve been blessed to go to so many new locations that we’d never been to before. I am one of those people that will go anywhere and try anything and basically love everywhere I go but I know that not everyone feels that way. So narrowing down where I think other families should go to as well was tough. I know that many families can only afford one major vacation a year and sometimes only one major vacation every few years. I’ve factored this in when choosing destinations. All of these will be worth the money you spend to be there and provide you with new incredible experiences. Plus, all of these locations are safe.

Panama

Panama City Panama

Panama is a destination that surprised and impressed me from start to finish. Not only is the Panama Canal fascinating to learn about, it brings in people from all over the world which means the foodie scene in Panama is incredible from Panamanian, Chinese, Peruvian, and more. Besides incredible meals they got a range of activities. One day you can see monkeys and sloths and the next tour Casa Viejo the Unesco Heritage site that’s not only hauntingly beautiful to see but is plentiful in shopping, eateries, and rooftop bars. In Panama City we recommend staying at Bristol Hotel.

Once you are done seeing the city you can head out to the beach. You can choose to stay on the Pacific or the Atlantic or do both! When we went to the beach we stayed at Decameron Panama on the Pacific side. If you prefer the Caribbean where the snorkeling is amazing head to the island Bocas Del Toro or to Casa Cayuco where your stay benefits an indigenous community.

Sri Lanka

If you’ve followed MommyTravels at all over the years you already know our entire family loves Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka has it all: a fascinating history with the ruins of ancient fortresses in the sky, stunning beaches, super fast ziplines, Sri Lankan food, and much more. One day you will be on an elephant safari and the next day you will be in the mountains learning firsthand at a tea factory. This one destination has so much to explore that I think you should spend at least 10 days here. Here are a few articles to help you plan a trip of a lifetime.

Gatlinburg, Tennesee

Gatlinburg

Gatlinburg, Tennessee was another destination that I found super surprising. Talk about underrated. In all my years of traveling, no one ever recommended going here. When I did finally go I loved every minute of it. The hiking and fly fishing in the Smokey Mountains is outstanding. If you do not want to go hiking on your own I suggest booking a tour with Smoky Mountain Guides.

The town itself is absolutely charming and you might even see a bear while you are there. For a super fun family day head up to Anakeesta to do a tree top walk, play on their extensive playground, ride a mountain coaster, and much more. Plus, the food is soul-satisfying at pretty much every restaurant in town. For families on a budget the camping options here are extensive. For those that prefer a hotel I recommend staying at Embassy Suites Gatlinburg Resort.

Belize

Silk Caye in Belize

Belize was on my bucket list for two decades before I made it there and my goodness it exceeded all expectations. With a perfect mix of adventure, culture, and relaxation Belize is just awesome. With its crystal-clear waters teeming with vibrant marine life, it’s a haven for snorkelers and divers, especially at the world-famous Great Blue Hole. Beyond the sea, Belize boasts ancient Mayan ruins like Xunantunich and Caracol, where history comes alive among lush jungles.

Add in eco-lodges, wildlife sanctuaries, and the warm hospitality of its people, and you have a destination that caters to thrill-seekers and serenity-lovers alike. Whether exploring caves, lounging on pristine beaches, or tasting authentic Creole and Garifuna cuisine, Belize offers an unforgettable tropical escape. I recommend staying at Naia Resort and Spa in Placencia Belize, their spa is incredible.

Nevis

Best Nevis Resorts

Nevis is an actual hidden gem. Any time I recommend Nevis the person has never heard of it. From hiking Nevis Peak and relaxing on pristine Pinney’s Beach to exploring historic plantations and dining on fresh, locally sourced cuisine, every moment feels special. Here are 17 Things to do in Nevis.

I stayed at quite a few Nevis resorts while I was on the island and all of them where a completely different experience from the next. With its commitment to sustainable tourism and lack of large-scale development, Nevis lets you reconnect with nature and experience the Caribbean as it was meant to be—authentic, vibrant, and blissfully serene.

Riviera Maya

Paddle boarding at Arte Hotel

The Riviera Maya area just south of the super popular Cancun is gorgeous and more low key. If you want a perfect beach vacation head here. In 2024, I found myself down here 3 separate times each time staying somewhere different. What they all had in common was that I had the best time each time I was there.

There’s so much to do in the area from cenotes to adventure parks to expansive beaches to Mayan Ruins. Plus, the resorts here are massive. You can stay at an all-inclusive like Xcarte Arte or Grand Palladium Kantenah Riviera Maya or at an regular hotel like Vidanta Riviera Maya that still has everything you need.

Western Montana

Hiking in Western Montana

With almost everyone watching Yellowstone, Western Montana easily makes the list. Montana is just as beautiful as the show depicts it to be. Even more so in person. While here you have to stay at a ranch and get your cowboy on. There are many to choose from and I’ve stayed at two I can recommend: High Tail Ranch and Alpine Falls Ranch. The High Tail Ranch even has a few days a year that you can pay to help herd Bison! Also while here you have to go fly fishing (often included in your ranch stay), go hiking, and visit a hot spring.

La Paz, Mexico

La Paz, Mexico, stands out as a top destination for 2025, offering a unique blend of stunning natural wonders and cultural vibrancy. Located along the Sea of Cortez, it’s a paradise for ocean lovers, where you can swim with whale sharks, kayak through turquoise waters, or explore secluded beaches like Balandra. On land, the city charms visitors with its art-filled Malecon, authentic Mexican cuisine, unique hotels, and a relaxed atmosphere.

La Paz also serves as a gateway to many eco-adventures, making it an ideal destination for travelers seeking both relaxation and excitement like us. Whether you’re chasing sunsets on an atv or diving into marine adventures, La Paz is the perfect blend of culture and coastal magic.

Germany’s Romantic Road

Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Germany

When Eden and I were in Germany we ended up changing our plans after randomly coming across the Romantic Road in Germany when we went to Rothenburg ob der Tauber. (Pictured above.) We were both immediately mesmerized by what we were seeing. That’s why this is the perfect destination for 2025, offering a unique escape into the heart of Europe.

This route winds through enchanting medieval towns, rolling vineyards, and historic castles, making every stop feel like stepping into a storybook. From the iconic Neuschwanstein Castle to the charming streets of Rothenburg ob der Tauber, the journey is a feast for the eyes and soul. Whether you’re exploring cobblestone alleys, indulging in traditional Bavarian cuisine, or cycling along scenic paths, this region is a dream destination that blends history, culture, and breathtaking landscapes into one unforgettable adventure.

Turkey

Turkey offers an unparalleled mix of history, adventure, and natural beauty that captivates visitors of all ages. From the magical hot air balloons of Cappadocia to the thermal travertine pools of Pamukkale, and the ancient ruins of Ephesus to the vibrant bazaars of Istanbul, every stop is a blend of cultural richness and jaw-dropping scenery.

Whether you’re exploring underground cities, splashing in turquoise waterfalls, or wandering the cobbled streets of Antalya’s Old Town, Turkey seamlessly combines learning with fun. Add in delicious kid-approved cuisine and warm, welcoming locals, and Turkey is easily a bucket-list destination.

We hope that where ever life takes you in 2025 it’s the best vacation ever. If you end up taking one of our recommendations tell us about it in the comments below!
