Planning a dreamy Belize escape? After spending a weekend at Alaia Belize in San Pedro, I’ve put together this insider guide covering the best things to do, what the resort is really like, where to eat, and how to make the most of a quick island getaway. From snorkeling Hol Chan Marine Park to lazy pool moments and exploring Ambergris Caye, this itinerary is packed with firsthand tips to help you plan the perfect trip to Alaia Belize.

Day 1: Check-In, Chill Out, and Rooftop Cocktails

Alaia Belize sits right along the coast, just 600 yards from the Belize Barrier Reef — the second largest in the world — so the water views are constant and spectacular. The resort is impressively well laid out with three pools, including Belize’s first-ever suspended rooftop pool (adults only and 360 degrees of “wow”). Down below, you’ll find two additional pools surrounded by cabanas, palm trees, and a casual island vibe.

Even though it’s a luxury property, Alaia manages to stay welcoming to families. There’s a kids’ playground, tons of open lawn space, and easy access to the calm Caribbean shallows, so little ones can splash safely while parents sip something cold. Down on the beach area, there is corn hole and giant chess.

The resort’s accommodations are equally impressive. I stayed in a one-bedroom suite that could honestly double as a beachfront condo. It came with a fully stocked kitchen (yes, a real fridge, stove, and even a blender for frozen drinks), a separate living area, and not one but three balconies — each offering its own view of paradise. Whether I was watching sunrise over the reef or sunset over San Pedro, there was always a perfect perch. They will bring a rollaway should you need one.

Inside, the design leans modern coastal: soft neutrals, woven textures, and natural woods. It’s the kind of space where you can kick off your sandals, pour a rum punch, and immediately feel at home.

Once checked in, I had a tough decision to make: which pool to hit first. Alaia has three—including Belize’s first-ever suspended rooftop pool with panoramic views of the Caribbean. (Pro tip: it’s adults-only, which means you can sip your cocktail in peace while feeling wildly sophisticated.)

After a quick boutique browse (because resort shopping is cardio), I cleaned up for dinner at Sea Salt Restaurant—the resort’s Mediterranean grill that elevates local ingredients into culinary art. Think grilled seafood, creative small plates, and a glass of wine that pairs dangerously well with Caribbean breezes. The portions are huge, so plan to split everything.

Alaia has six restaurants and four bars, so you’ll never have to eat in the same place twice (unless you want to — which you probably will).

Day 2: Secret Beach and the Truck Stop

Breakfast at The Terrace at Sea Salt

Morning started slowly, just how I like it—breakfast at my leisure at The Terrace at Sea Salt. Fresh Belizean fruit, strong coffee, and a view that made me consider buying a timeshare (don’t worry, I didn’t).

By 10 a.m., it was time for adventure. I checked in with the concierge for our excursion, grabbed my golf cart, and headed out to explore San Pedro. If you’ve never driven a golf cart through town, it’s equal parts charming and chaotic—but in the best way. JK, the drive is super intense and the roads are awful. The speed bumps are massive and many streets are cobblestone. My nerves were super on edge by the time we got to the beach.

Taking a golf cart to Secret Beach

My first stop: Secret Beach, the not-so-secret hotspot with ocean tables, clear turquoise water, and tropical drinks that make you lose track of time. There are a ton of various places you can eat, drink, and lounge. I recommend not going to the first one you come across but instead drive to the end of the row for a better experience. There were tons of people selling crap the entire time so that part sucked but otherwise a lowkey day.

Secret Beach on San Pedro Island in Belize

You could spend all day at Secret Beach, but by 3 p.m., I cruised to The Truck Stop, Belize’s first shipping container food park. It’s quirky, local, and the perfect place to grab a cold drink and snack before heading back. I absolutely didn’t want to drive after dark on those roads.

Dinner that evening was a vibe—Vista Rooftop Sushi Bar. The sunset views are unreal, and the sushi was fresh, creative, and just the right amount of indulgent. Order a cocktail (or two) and stay for the view. The cocktail menu was the most unique one I have come across in quite some time.

Day 3: Spa Bliss and Dinner Under the Stars

Breakfast in bed? Yes, please. Alaia lets you charge all your food and drinks to your room, so I fully leaned into the “treat yourself” theme.

The rest of the morning was spent at my private poolside cabana, complete with a dedicated server making sure my drink never ran dry. If you’re going to relax, this is the way to do it—between dips in the pool, pool views, and gourmet snacks on standby.

That afternoon, I headed to K’In Spa & Wellness Center for a 60-minute Swedish massage. The spa is serene, modern, and totally indulgent, offering everything from facials to local handmade skincare products. By the end, I felt like butter on a hot Belizean day—completely melted.

As if the day couldn’t get any better, Alaia capped it off with a Dine Under the Stars experience: a private four-course dinner on the sand, waves lapping nearby, and the kind of meal that makes you fall a little in love—with life, with Belize, maybe with whoever’s sitting across the table. I was with Lindsey, so not really the vibe but I could see it could be.

Day 4: A Slow Goodbye

Sunday morning came too soon. After one last lazy breakfast overlooking the water, I reluctantly packed up and headed for the super short flight back to Belize City.

It’s always hard to leave paradise, but Alaia Belize somehow manages to feel both lively and peaceful, sophisticated yet laid-back—a perfect follow-up to the quiet luxury of Cayo Espanto.

Whether you’re planning a romantic getaway or a luxe friends’ trip, Alaia is that perfect blend of Caribbean charm and resort indulgence you’ll be talking about long after you’ve gone home.

If you’ve ever dreamed of escaping to your own private island—where someone remembers your favorite drink, sets up paddleboards before you even ask, and serves every meal in the privacy of your oceanfront villa—then allow me to introduce you to Cayo Espanto in Belize. It’s a private island resort just off the coast of Ambergris Caye, and yes, it’s every bit as jaw-droppingly perfect as it sounds.

I recently spent three nights there in Villa Aurora, one of the island’s stunning two-bedroom villas, and I can confidently say it’s the kind of place that spoils you for life. You’ll never look at a “beachfront suite” the same way again.

Welcome to Island Perfection

Cayo Espanto a private island in Belize

Cayo Espanto is the definition of “barefoot luxury.” The island is tiny—only seven villas—but every single one is right on the water with its own private plunge pool, personal dock, and houseman who seems to have Jedi-level intuition.

Our houseman greeted us the moment we arrived by boat, welcoming us with chilled towels, Aperol spritzes, and a mountain of chips, salsa, and guacamole (which just so happens to be my love language).

Before you even set foot on the island, the team at Cayo Espanto sends an intake form that covers everything from dietary preferences to favorite snacks and drinks. And they take it seriously. Like, “your-guacamole-is-already-being-smashed-as-you-dock” seriously.

Every detail is tailored to you, which is why this place is so incredible for families with teenagers—everyone gets exactly what they love, no negotiations required.

Our Villa: Aurora in Every Sense

We stayed in Villa Aurora, a spacious two-bedroom retreat that sits right next to the Caribbean Sea. Each bedroom opens directly onto the deck, where the turquoise water practically begs you to dive in. There’s a private pool, plenty of outdoor seating, and a hammock perfectly positioned for afternoon naps or pretending you’re answering emails.

Inside, the villa is airy and elegant, with Belizean wood details, crisp white linens, and a bathroom big enough to make you consider living there permanently. The open design lets in the ocean breeze and the sound of waves lapping below.

If you’re traveling with teens, the two-bedroom layout is ideal—everyone has their own space (and their own bathroom, which is basically the definition of peace on earth).

Dining: Personalized Perfection

Dinner at Cayo Espanto

Here’s the thing about dining at Cayo Espanto: you’ll never see a buffet line or hear the words “limited menu.” Every single meal is customized just for you.

Before each meal, our chef would present a menu featuring multiple entrée choices. Everything was beautifully plated and absurdly fresh—especially the seafood, which tasted like it had been caught just hours before.

Because of the November weather, we dined exclusively on our villa’s patio, but under normal conditions, they’ll happily set up your meal on the dock, beach, or even under the stars on the beach. We did see a beach set up one night for someone’s 40th anniversary. We never really saw any of the other people on the island, but I think there were 3 or 4 others there.

Cayo Espanto Breakfast
Cayo Espanto Breakfast | Photos by Meagan Wristen

My favorite breakfast was the traditional Belizean breakfast—eggs, refried beans, fry jacks (glorious fried dough), and fresh tropical fruit. Lunches often included ceviche, grilled fish, or salads bursting with local ingredients. And dinners? Think lobster tail, coconut shrimp, and melt-in-your-mouth desserts.

Oh, and don’t skip afternoon tea—a daily ritual that feels wonderfully civilized, even if you’re still in your swimsuit. Tea is typically an assortment of teas, finger sandwiches, and cookies. All of that was great but the next day I opted for my tea to be an Aperol Spritz and chips and salsa.

Adventure Awaits: Paddleboarding, Snorkeling, and More

Water activities at Cayo Espanto

Yes, Cayo Espanto is luxurious, but it’s also full of opportunities for adventure—making it an ideal balance for families who like a little activity with their pampering.

I spent my mornings paddleboarding around the island, watching stingrays glide beneath the surface and pelicans dive for their breakfast. There’s also a water trampoline, which is way more fun than it sounds (and doubles as a surprisingly good workout).

Paddlingboarding at Cayo Espanto

One of the highlights of the trip was a snorkeling excursion to Hol Chan Marine Park, just a short boat ride away. It’s one of Belize’s most famous snorkeling spots, and for good reason—crystal-clear water, colorful coral reefs, and more marine life than you can imagine. We swam alongside sea turtles, nurse sharks, and schools of shimmering fish. Teens will absolutely love it. (This is an additional cost.)

Back on the island, you can enjoy non-motorized water sports like sailing, kayaking, and more paddleboarding—all included in your stay.

Spa Bliss on Island Time

After all that adventure (or, you know, lounging), we indulged in a massage right at our villa. The sound of gentle waves mixed with the soft ocean breeze made it one of the most relaxing treatments I’ve ever had.

For families, Cayo Espanto’s spa offerings can be adapted for all ages. Teens can enjoy lighter treatments like facials or foot massages, while parents go for deep-tissue bliss. It’s the perfect way to wind down after a day of sun and saltwater.

A Private Island That Welcomes Families

Cayo Espanto Private Island

While Cayo Espanto is often marketed as a couples’ escape (and it’s definitely romantic), it’s also surprisingly well-equipped for families. When kids stay, the staff goes out of their way to make it magical.

Our houseman explained that for younger guests, they provide sand toys, organize movie nights on a huge inflatable screen, and even teach kids how to sail. That’s right—your child can learn to navigate a boat while you sip wine on the deck. Parenting win.

Teens, meanwhile, will love the freedom and adventure that comes with island life—snorkeling, exploring by kayak, and maybe even unplugging for a few hours (miracles do happen). The wifi on the island was great so if they don’t want to unplug that’s not an issue.

Sustainability and Comfort in the Tropics

Cayo Espanto operates with sustainability in mind. All freshwater on the island comes from an on-site Reverse Osmosis Treatment system, providing safe drinking water without wasteful imports.

And while you’re in the tropics (read: mosquitoes happen), the resort has a mosquito misting system that keeps pesky bugs at bay using an extract from chrysanthemums. It’s completely safe for humans, effective for insects, and basically lets you enjoy sunset without becoming a snack. However, it’s not 100% so pack a lot of bug spray.

They also have nets for the bed at night so you don’t get mosquito bites while you sleep.

The Service: Beyond Exceptional

If luxury is defined by attention to detail, then Cayo Espanto has mastered it. Every staff member—from the boat captain to the chefs to our incredible houseman—seemed genuinely invested in making our stay unforgettable.

Need more ice? It appears. Want breakfast 30 minutes later so you can sleep in? Done. Mention that you love Aperol spritzes once? They’re waiting for you at sunset.

This level of service makes it perfect for multi-generational family trips too. Grandparents, teens, and parents alike will feel cared for without having to coordinate a thing.

Rates and Realities

Luxury like this comes at a price, but for what’s included, it’s surprisingly all-encompassing. Rates cover your private villa, three gourmet meals daily, snacks, drinks (except wine, Champagne, and cordials), and non-motorized water sports.

The resort typically requires a four-night minimum stay, though exceptions can sometimes be made. Over the holidays, a seven-night minimum applies (and if you’re planning to stay through Christmas and New Year’s, make it 14).

With only a handful of villas and a maximum of 18 guests on the entire island, privacy and exclusivity are guaranteed.

Final Thoughts: Belize, but Make It Private

Private pool at Cayo Espanto

Cayo Espanto is one of those rare destinations that manages to be both luxurious and deeply personal. It’s the kind of place where you can completely disconnect—no crowded beaches, no noisy neighbors, just the sea, the sky, and impeccable service.

Whether you’re planning a family trip with teenagers, a romantic getaway, or even a multi-generational celebration, this island checks every box. It’s adventure and relaxation wrapped in one stunning Caribbean package.

As for me, I’m still dreaming about paddleboarding at sunrise, eating fry jacks on the patio, and pretending Villa Aurora was my permanent address. Because once you’ve had a taste of Cayo Espanto, there’s no going back to ordinary vacations.

Grapevine, Texas, truly comes alive in the fall with GrapeFest, the largest wine festival in the Southwest. The festival’s wine train is a unique experience, offering scenic rides paired with exquisite wines. Stroll down Main Street and indulge in the local culinary scene—I highly recommend eating at one of the charming bistros. And for some family fun, check out Meow Wolf, Great Wolf Lodge, Gaylord, or Chicken and Pickle. You can also go shopping at Grapevine Mills Mall.

4. Belize: A Snorkeler’s Dream and More

Belize in the fall is a tropical dream without the intense heat. The snorkeling here is world-class, with the Belize Barrier Reef teeming with vibrant marine life. Adventure seekers can also float through ancient caves on a tubing tour, which is as thrilling as it is unique. And when it’s time to relax, indulge in one of the country’s many amazing spas for a rejuvenating experience. We recommend staying at Naia Resort and Spa in Placencia Belize.

Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge, located nearby, offer a mix of family-friendly attractions, cozy cabins, and Southern comfort food. No fall travel list is complete without mentioning Vermont. The entire state transforms into a patchwork of red, orange, and yellow during autumn. Panama is not near as humid in the fall, making it an ideal time to visit. The Panama Canal is a must-see marvel, but don’t overlook the country’s incredible biodiversity. Spot monkeys and sloths in the lush rainforests, then head to the pristine beaches for some sun and surf. Panama City is also a rising foodie destination, with a vibrant culinary scene that will make any food lover’s heart skip a beat. We recommend staying at Bristol Panama.

Winter has its moments—hot chocolate, cozy fires, and snow-covered landscapes that look straight out of a Hallmark movie. But let’s be real: the charm fades the second you have to scrape ice off your windshield or slip on a patch of black ice. If the cold has overstayed its welcome, it’s time to trade the frost for my favorite footwear, flip-flops. Here are seven sun-drenched destinations that will warm your soul (and your toes) this winter.

1. Belize

Naia Resort and Spa on the beach

Forget the frostbite! Belize calls you to its warm embrace with a symphony of coral reefs, crystal-clear waters, and adventures that sound like something out of a child’s imagination book. Snorkeling in Belize isn’t just swimming; it’s like being teleported into a National Geographic documentary, surrounded by a kaleidoscope of marine life. And if you prefer terra firma, the jungle awaits with open arms. Remember, it’s not sweating; it’s your body’s way of saying, “Thank you for the vitamin D.”

2. Panama

Panama City Panama

Panama, where the engineering marvel of the Panama Canal competes with the natural wonders of its jungles. It’s a place where you can hike through rainforests in the morning and explore the cosmopolitan streets by night. Want to feel like Indiana Jones? Visit an indigenous village. (Don’t climb the waterfall! I feel on my face.) Craving for culinary adventures? The food scene here might just make you consider permanent residency. Just a heads up: the jungle might not have Wi-Fi, but it promises a better connection.

We recommend staying at the Bristol Panama in the city or at Decameron Panama at the beach.

3. Nevis: Not Just Another Caribbean Island

Nevis Peak Hike

If the Caribbean was a royal family, Nevis would be the elegant, less flashy sibling who doesn’t need the spotlight to shine. Its beaches whisper tales of serenity and seclusion, while the historic ruins tell stories of a time gone by. Nevis is the place to go when you want to disconnect and recharge, where the only thing you’ll be uploading is your feet on a hammock.

Wondering where to stay? Check out: Best Nevis Resorts

4. Tampa Bay, Florida: Sunshine State of Mind

4-day Tampa Bay Weekend Getaway

Ah, Florida. You might think you know it, but Tampa Bay is here to surprise you. It’s where you can have breakfast with giraffes (don’t worry, they prefer leaves over pancakes) and scream your lungs out on a roller coaster before lunch. The Florida Aquarium offers a dive into the marine life without getting wet, and the seafood? Let’s just say you’ll understand why the pelicans look so smug. Tampa Bay is where winter goes to retire.

5. The Bahamas: Choose Your Own Tropical Adventure
Cat Island Bahamas

The Bahamas are like a box of chocolates for beach lovers – you never know what you’re gonna get, but it’s all delightful. Cat Island is your go-to for quiet beaches where the waves gently kiss the shore. For those who prefer their beach days with a side of luxury, Nassau’s mega-resorts offer opulence and maybe a celebrity sighting or two. It’s a place where the hardest decision you’ll make is between the beach chair or the hammock.

6. Riviera Maya

Riviera Maya Grand Luxxe Vidanta (1)

Riviera Maya is home to what I happen to think are some of the best beaches in the world. Start your trip by staying at one of the massive resorts on the beach like Xcaret Arte, Grand Palladium Kantenah Riviera Maya, or Vidanta Riviera Maya.

If you decide you want to leave the resort head out and explore the ancient Mayan Ruins of Tulum or Chichen Itza, then cool off in one of the region’s stunning cenotes—these underground swimming holes look like something out of a fairytale. If you love marine life, snorkeling in Akumal Bay gets you up close with sea turtles, while the Great Mayan Reef (the world’s second-largest barrier reef) is a diver’s dream. And when the sun sets, Playa del Carmen’s nearby 5th Avenue is the perfect place to shop, sip margaritas, and dance the night away.

7. Costa Rica

See monkeys in Costa Rica

Costa Rica is where you go when you want adventure, wildlife, and beaches—all in one trip. Zip-line through the cloud forests of Monteverde, spot sloths and monkeys in Manuel Antonio National Park, or soak in the volcanic hot springs of Arenal. If surfing is on your bucket list, Tamarindo is one of the best places to learn. For something unique, take a night tour to see bioluminescent waters glow as you paddle through. And, of course, Costa Rica’s motto is “Pura Vida” (Pure Life), so expect to slow down, relax, and live in the moment.

Wrapping It Up

Whether you’re looking for adventure, history, relaxation, or a mix of all three, these destinations promise one thing: no winter blues in sight. So, grab your swimsuit, book that flight, and trade the snow for sun. After all, the only ice you should be dealing with is in your tropical cocktail.

Get Travel Insurance

Unfortunately, there are a lot of things that can go wrong on any trip. Be prepared for the worst with travel insurance. We use Travelex or Safety Wing (often cheaper).

Book Flights

I use Skyscanner to find flights. I use it so much, I wrote an entire guide to finding cheap flights with Skyscanner! Another option for finding deals is FlightHub.

Book a Place to Stay

I recommend using Expedia.com or Hotels.com for most hotel bookings. I prefer to book directly with Marriott when I stay there because of their excellent military discount.

If you prefer staying in a vacation rental instead, I recommend VRBO. If you are looking for a hostel, I use HostelWorld.

Choose Activities and Tours

To find great activities in any area I use Viator. If we are visiting a city with lots of popular attractions I always check CityPass, PogoPass, and GoCard to see if they have discount cards available. Groupon also tends to have a lot of local travel deals.

When I want to book a full-on multi-day tour I use TourRadar. They’ve got fantastic weekly deals. If going somewhere in Mexico or the Caribbean, I use Apple Vacations.

Rent a Car or Get a Lyft

More often than not, Lyft is cheaper than Uber. Use my Lyft link for an $18 credit! For a car rental in any country, I recommend Hertz or Discover Cars.

Save Money on Gas

Upside a free app gets you cash back on gas! Use promo code RV2Q2 to get an extra 15¢/gal bonus on your first purchase.

Get a Visa

I use iVisa to get all of my Visas.

If you are wondering if Belize City is worth visiting, you’re in the right place. I’ve been to the city a few times during my “corporate life” to visit hotels, so I have some insights to share.

In my personal opinion Belize City isn’t a must see. But if you’re like me you’ll still want to go and see for yourself and form your own opinion.

That is why in this post I’ll tell you why I don’t think it’s worth a dedicated visit but I will also share where to stay and what to do to make the most of your time, in case you will still want to (or have to) go. I’ll also highlight some of Belize’s best destinations as better alternatives to Belize City.

A Brief Look at Belize City

Belize City Airport

Belize City is home to the country’s largest airport, Philip S.W. Goldson International Airport, making it a natural entry point for many visitors. It has a rich colonial history, visible in its architecture and landmarks, and serves as a hub for exploring nearby attractions like the Altun Ha Mayan ruins or the cayes.

However, the city itself can feel overwhelming for those expecting a more relaxed, tropical vibe.

It’s also not very safe for the most part, and there’s nothing charming about it.

I might be a bit biased because, on my first visit to the city, I arrived at the news of a shooting just steps away from my hotel. I realize it was likely a case of bad timing, but still…

Belize City Interesting Facts

Here are a few interesting facts about Belize that are related to Belize City:

  • Belize City, the largest city in Belize, serves as the country’s principal port and commercial hub. As of recent estimates, it has a population of approximately 65,222 residents.
  • Surprisingly Belize City is not the Capital of Belize. It used to be until 1970.. After Hurricane Hattie caused significant damage in 1961, the capital was relocated inland to Belmopan which I find much more appealing and interesting to visit, and definitely safer.
  • Museum of Belize: Housed in a former prison, this museum showcases the country’s rich history and culture, and it may be worth visiting if you have time to spare.
  • Language: Belize is the only Central American country where English is the official language.
  • Population Density: Belize has the lowest population density in Central America, with just 15 persons per square kilometer.

Why Belize City is not worth a visit

As I mentioned before I am not a fan of Belize City and in this section I will give you all the reasons why, but I also include a few attractions you may find in case you need to pass by.

Also, keep in mind that Belize City is not a pretty city. It is quite trafficked and chaotic and not the safest. I don’t mean to be negative, just to keep your expectations low. If you are flying internationally, though, you will have to fly into Belize airport, but you can quickly move on to your next destination in Belize, which is actually full of pretty places. More about that later on.

1. Limited Attractions

Museum of Belize

Belize City has a handful of cultural and historical highlights, but these can easily be explored within a single day. Some key attractions include:

  • Museum of Belize: A small but informative museum housed in a former prison. It offers a glimpse into Belize’s colonial past, Maya heritage, and cultural evolution. It’s definitely worth a visit if you have some time to kill. It is situated on Gabourel Lane, close to downtown and within a zone frequented by tourists. The museum is near government offices and other landmarks, which adds a level of security. Daytime Visits: It’s best to visit during the day when the museum is open ( Monday to Friday, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM
  • St. John’s Cathedral: The oldest Anglican church in Central America, built in the early 1800s using bricks brought over as ballast on British ships. While historically significant, the cathedral is small and can be fully appreciated in a short visit.
  • Swing Bridge: One of the oldest manually operated swing bridges in the world. Although not pretty, it’s a fascinating piece of engineering history, but it’s a quick sight, not an activity.

Insider safety tips: You can walk from the Museum of Belize to the Cathedral, pass through the Swimg Bridge during daylight, and stay on the main roads. However, I recommend avoiding jewelry and fancy accessories that would make you a juicy target for pickpocketers.

2. Safety Concerns

Safety can be a concern in Belize City, which is known for higher crime rates than other parts of the country. While many areas frequented by tourists are relatively safe during the day, make sure you follow these safety tips:

  • Avoid walking around at night, in any neighborhood.
  • Cautious Atmosphere: Stay on the alert when walking around during the day and stay in the touristy areas.
  • Use taxis to move around if you feel uncomfortable
  • Don’t wear flashy accessories and avoid wearing luxury brands

3. Urban Environment

Belize City is a bustling urban center that contrasts sharply with the idyllic landscapes that draw most visitors to Belize.

  • Crowded Streets: The city can feel chaotic, with busy roads, street vendors, and a lack of pedestrian-friendly infrastructure.
  • Limited Green Spaces: Unlike other parts of Belize, Belize City doesn’t offer much in the way of parks, nature trails, or scenic views.
  • No Beaches: Despite being on the coast, the city doesn’t have the white-sand beaches or clear turquoise waters that Belize is famous for.
  • It’s not pretty. I didn’t find anything appealing about Belize City that makes it worth a visit.
  • Not for outdoorsy – If you’re seeking a tropical escape, Belize City will definitely not meet your expectations.

Having said that, you can join some tours from Belize City that will take you to amazing places within one hour. Keep reading to find out more about them.

4. Lack of Tourist Infrastructure

Smokeez Seaside Bar and Grill
Photo by Smokeez Seaside Bar and Grill

Although Belize City is the largest city in the country, its tourism infrastructure is limited compared to other parts of Belize:

    • Hotels: While there are a few comfortable options, like Villa Boscardi or The Great House Inn, they cater more to transit travelers than those seeking a luxury or resort experience. You won’t find all-inclusive resorts that are instead scattered around the Belize Cayes and other more isolated destinations.

  • Restaurants: The dining scene is limited, with only a handful of standout options like Smokeez
Seaside Bar and Grill. The variety and quality pale in comparison to what’s available in Placencia, San Pedro, or Caye Caulker.
  • Activities: The city lacks the type of activities that typically draw tourists, such as water sports, wildlife tours, or cultural festivals.

For most visitors, there needs to be more exciting options to justify a longer stay.

What to visit instead

Silk Caye in Belize
Photo by Meagan Wristen | Silk Caye in Belize

Belize City serves as a gateway to some of the country’s most stunning destinations, all of which are just a short trip away. Although it’s not within the scope of this article, I would love to mention some of the most beautiful places in Belize to make up for my negative review of Belize City. Belize as a country is definitely worth your time, especially if you love nature and Mayan History.

You will find many spectacular places to visit, from spectacular archeological sites to natural wonders and underwater treasures like the world-famous Blue Hole.

Here are some of my favorite spots in Belize that you can reach from Belize City.

  • Caye Caulker and San Pedro (Ambergris Caye): These islands offer pristine beaches, crystal-clear waters, and vibrant marine life. They are perfect for snorkeling, diving, or simply relaxing by the sea. Water taxis and flights from Belize City make them easily accessible.
  • San Ignacio: Nestled in the jungle, this town is the starting point for exploring ancient Mayan ruins like Xunantunich and Caracol, as well as activities like cave tubing, zip-lining, and hiking.
  • Placencia: A laid-back beach town with stunning coastline, great seafood, and access to the Belize Barrier Reef.

These destinations will make the perfect Belize Itinerary, allowing you to experience Belize’s natural beauty and cultural richness far better than Belize City does.

How to move around and from Belize City: Transportation Guide

Belize hops

Belize City’s primary value lies in its role as a transportation hub. It’s where most international travelers arrive and connect to their next destination using different means of transportation, as follows.

  • Airport: Philip S.W. Goldson International Airport, located just outside Belize City, is the main entry point for visitors.
  • Water Taxis: Regular ferries depart from Belize City to the islands of Caye Caulker and Ambergris Caye, making it a key transit point for island-hopping.
  • Buses: The main bus terminal connects Belize City to destinations like San Ignacio, Placencia, and Dangriga.
  • Car Rentals: Many visitors choose to rent a car in Belize City, and it’s my favorite way to explore the country. Having your own car gives you the freedom to travel at your own pace, make spontaneous stops, adjust your plans on the go, and avoid being tied to a set schedule.

While it’s an efficient hub, most travelers find that Belize City itself is not worth other than a brief stopover.

Daily Tours that you can do from Belize City

If, despite my bad review of the city, you wish to use it as a base to explore the country, you are in luck because there are organized tours that you can join to some interesting attractions that make a great day trip from Belize.

Altun Ha Mayan Site tour from Belize City

If you are interested in the Mayan world, the tour to Altun Ha archeological site is a great option, just an hour from Belize City. This private tour includes hotel pickup in an air-conditioned vehicle and covers entry fees for a hassle-free experience.

You will enjoy a scenic drive through Belize City, passing landmarks like the Baron Bliss Lighthouse and the Museum of Belize, before traveling through rural communities and along the historic Old Belize River.

At Altun Ha, explore the on-site museum and take a guided tour of the impressive ruins, learning about the Maya civilization’s culture and history.

Cave Tubing & Zip Lining Adventure

If you’re up for an adventure, this tour is a blast! You’ll hike through the rainforest (about 20 minutes), then float on a tube through these incredible Mayan caves—it feels like another world. After that, it’s zip-lining time! Flying over the jungle canopy is such a rush, and the views are amazing.

It’s a private tour, so you can take your time, and everything’s covered: equipment, lunch, and even hotel pickup and drop-off. If you’re in Belize City and want an epic day out in nature, this is the way to go!

Lamanai Mayan Ruins and River Cruise

This full-day tour to Lamanai from Belize City is perfect if you’re up for a mix of history, nature, and adventure. You’ll start with a scenic river cruise through the jungle, where you might spot birds, orchids, and even crocodiles. Once you arrive, it’s time to explore one of Belize’s most famous Mayan sites.

Your guide will walk you through the ruins, including highlights like the Jaguar Temple, the Mask Temple, and ancient Mayan palaces. You’ll also hear the howler monkeys in the trees and learn about the incredible history of this ancient city. There’s even a small museum where you can check out Mayan artifacts.

To top it off, you’ll enjoy a traditional Belizean lunch before returning. The tour includes hotel or port pickup and drop-off, so it’s hassle-free and packed with unforgettable experiences!

Conclusion

As you may have noticed, I am not a fan of Belize City, and although you can actually explore some nicer parts of Belize by taking tours from Belize City I still don’t recommend staying there. While Belize City has its place as the country’s largest urban center and transportation hub, it lacks the charm, safety, and attractions that you can find in other parts of Belize instead. Spending a day in Belize City can be worthwhile for exploring its limited highlights, but for a more rewarding experience, your time is better spent exploring the islands, jungles, and beaches that make Belize a world-class destination.

The last couple of years we’ve been blessed to go to so many new locations that we’d never been to before. I am one of those people that will go anywhere and try anything and basically love everywhere I go but I know that not everyone feels that way. So narrowing down where I think other families should go to as well was tough. I know that many families can only afford one major vacation a year and sometimes only one major vacation every few years. I’ve factored this in when choosing destinations. All of these will be worth the money you spend to be there and provide you with new incredible experiences. Plus, all of these locations are safe.

Panama

Panama City Panama

Panama is a destination that surprised and impressed me from start to finish. Not only is the Panama Canal fascinating to learn about, it brings in people from all over the world which means the foodie scene in Panama is incredible from Panamanian, Chinese, Peruvian, and more. Besides incredible meals they got a range of activities. One day you can see monkeys and sloths and the next tour Casa Viejo the Unesco Heritage site that’s not only hauntingly beautiful to see but is plentiful in shopping, eateries, and rooftop bars. In Panama City we recommend staying at Bristol Hotel.

Once you are done seeing the city you can head out to the beach. You can choose to stay on the Pacific or the Atlantic or do both! When we went to the beach we stayed at Decameron Panama on the Pacific side. If you prefer the Caribbean where the snorkeling is amazing head to the island Bocas Del Toro or to Casa Cayuco where your stay benefits an indigenous community.

Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka

If you’ve followed MommyTravels at all over the years you already know our entire family loves Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka has it all: a fascinating history with the ruins of ancient fortresses in the sky, stunning beaches, super fast ziplines, Sri Lankan food, and much more. One day you will be on an elephant safari and the next day you will be in the mountains learning firsthand at a tea factory. This one destination has so much to explore that I think you should spend at least 10 days here. Here are a few articles to help you plan a trip of a lifetime.

Gatlinburg, Tennesee

Gatlinburg

Gatlinburg, Tennessee was another destination that I found super surprising. Talk about underrated. In all my years of traveling, no one ever recommended going here. When I did finally go I loved every minute of it. The hiking and fly fishing in the Smokey Mountains is outstanding. If you do not want to go hiking on your own I suggest booking a tour with Smoky Mountain Guides.

The town itself is absolutely charming and you might even see a bear while you are there. For a super fun family day head up to Anakeesta to do a tree top walk, play on their extensive playground, ride a mountain coaster, and much more. Plus, the food is soul-satisfying at pretty much every restaurant in town. For families on a budget the camping options here are extensive. For those that prefer a hotel I recommend staying at  Embassy Suites Gatlinburg Resort.

Belize

Silk Caye in Belize
Photo by Meagan Wristen | Silk Caye in Belize

Belize was on my bucket list for two decades before I made it there and my goodness it exceeded all expectations. With a perfect mix of adventure, culture, and relaxation Belize is just awesome. With its crystal-clear waters teeming with vibrant marine life, it’s a haven for snorkelers and divers, especially at the world-famous Great Blue Hole. Beyond the sea, Belize boasts ancient Mayan ruins like Xunantunich and Caracol, where history comes alive among lush jungles.

Add in eco-lodges, wildlife sanctuaries, and the warm hospitality of its people, and you have a destination that caters to thrill-seekers and serenity-lovers alike. Whether exploring caves, lounging on pristine beaches, or tasting authentic Creole and Garifuna cuisine, Belize offers an unforgettable tropical escape. I recommend staying at Naia Resort and Spa in Placencia Belize, their spa is incredible.

Nevis

Best Nevis Resorts

Nevis is an actual hidden gem. Any time I recommend Nevis the person has never heard of it. From hiking Nevis Peak and relaxing on pristine Pinney’s Beach to exploring historic plantations and dining on fresh, locally sourced cuisine, every moment feels special. Here are 17 Things to do in Nevis.

I stayed at quite a few Nevis resorts while I was on the island and all of them where a completely different experience from the next. With its commitment to sustainable tourism and lack of large-scale development, Nevis lets you reconnect with nature and experience the Caribbean as it was meant to be—authentic, vibrant, and blissfully serene.

Riviera Maya

Paddle boarding at Arte Hotel

The Riviera Maya area just south of the super popular Cancun is gorgeous and more low key. If you want a perfect beach vacation head here. In 2024, I found myself down here 3 separate times each time staying somewhere different. What they all had in common was that I had the best time each time I was there.

There’s so much to do in the area from cenotes to adventure parks to expansive beaches to Mayan Ruins. Plus, the resorts here are massive. You can stay at an all-inclusive like Xcarte Arte or Grand Palladium Kantenah Riviera Maya or at an regular hotel like Vidanta Riviera Maya that still has everything you need.

Western Montana

Hiking in Western Montana

With almost everyone watching Yellowstone, Western Montana easily makes the list. Montana is just as beautiful as the show depicts it to be. Even more so in person. While here you have to stay at a ranch and get your cowboy on. There are many to choose from and I’ve stayed at two I can recommend: High Tail Ranch and Alpine Falls Ranch. The High Tail Ranch even has a few days a year that you can pay to help herd Bison! Also while here you have to go fly fishing (often included in your ranch stay), go hiking, and visit a hot spring.

La Paz, Mexico

Riding ATVs in La Paz, Mexico

La Paz, Mexico, stands out as a top destination for 2025, offering a unique blend of stunning natural wonders and cultural vibrancy. Located along the Sea of Cortez, it’s a paradise for ocean lovers, where you can swim with whale sharks, kayak through turquoise waters, or explore secluded beaches like Balandra. On land, the city charms visitors with its art-filled Malecon, authentic Mexican cuisine, unique hotels, and a relaxed atmosphere.

La Paz also serves as a gateway to many eco-adventures, making it an ideal destination for travelers seeking both relaxation and excitement like us. Whether you’re chasing sunsets on an atv or diving into marine adventures, La Paz is the perfect blend of culture and coastal magic.

Germany’s Romantic Road

Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Germany

When Eden and I were in Germany we ended up changing our plans after randomly coming across the Romantic Road in Germany when we went to Rothenburg ob der Tauber. (Pictured above.) We were both immediately mesmerized by what we were seeing. That’s why this is the perfect destination for 2025, offering a unique escape into the heart of Europe.

This route winds through enchanting medieval towns, rolling vineyards, and historic castles, making every stop feel like stepping into a storybook. From the iconic Neuschwanstein Castle to the charming streets of Rothenburg ob der Tauber, the journey is a feast for the eyes and soul. Whether you’re exploring cobblestone alleys, indulging in traditional Bavarian cuisine, or cycling along scenic paths, this region is a dream destination that blends history, culture, and breathtaking landscapes into one unforgettable adventure.

Turkey

Pasabag Valley Cappadocia

Turkey offers an unparalleled mix of history, adventure, and natural beauty that captivates visitors of all ages. From the magical hot air balloons of Cappadocia to the thermal travertine pools of Pamukkale, and the ancient ruins of Ephesus to the vibrant bazaars of Istanbul, every stop is a blend of cultural richness and jaw-dropping scenery.

Whether you’re exploring underground cities, splashing in turquoise waterfalls, or wandering the cobbled streets of Antalya’s Old Town, Turkey seamlessly combines learning with fun. Add in delicious kid-approved cuisine and warm, welcoming locals, and Turkey is easily a bucket-list destination.

We hope that where ever life takes you in 2025 it’s the best vacation ever. If you end up taking one of our recommendations tell us about it in the comments below!

Do you need a break from your everyday routine? It’s the perfect time to plan a girlfriend getaway! Imagine spending a few days with your best friends, getting pampered, exploring a new destination, and making unforgettable memories together. Placencia, Belize is an ideal location for a perfect getaway. You can stay at the Naia Resort and Spa, get pampered at the resort’s spa, go snorkeling at Silk Caye with Splash Dive Center, and take a sunset cruise with light bites and wine. In this blog post, we will guide you on how to plan the perfect girlfriend getaway in Placencia, Belize.

Plan the Perfect Girlfriend Getaway in Placencia, Belize

How to Get to Placenciaflying Tropic Air

The first thing you need to do is to book your flights to Belize’s main airport. Tropic Air has daily flights to Philip Goldson airport airport in Placencia, which means you don’t have to worry about transportation. Tropic Air is the largest airline in Belize and offers scenic flights, tours, and charters.

The plane is small and may make stops along the way in other small cities. We had a direct flight when we went there but on the way back we made stop to pick up more people. When flying south sit on the left side of the plane for an ocean view or on the right for a mountain view.

Where to Stay in PlacenciaAround Naia Resort and Spa

Once you arrive in Placencia, you can head straight to Naia Resort and Spa, their shuttle will pick you up. It is a quick 14 minute drive. This luxurious resort is located in Placencia on the beach and offers a serene atmosphere. You and your girlfriends can choose from several types of accommodation, including beachfront bungalows and plantation houses. We chose this resort because we wanted a super peaceful stay with good food and of course on the beach! The resort has wheelchair-accessible facilities and an elevator.

Things to do in Palencia

Visit a Spa

Naia Resort and Spa
The Spa area at Naia Resort

After settling in at Naia, book a day at the resort’s spa. The spa offers a variety of services that will leave you feeling relaxed and rejuvenated. You and your girlfriends can get massages, facials, body treatments, and more. There’s no better way to start your getaway than a day at the spa! Plan to spend at least an hour there after your treatment to enjoy a beverage and the pool.

Snorkel at Silk CayeSilk Caye

If you’re seeking an easy adventure, book a snorkeling excursion to Silk Caye with Splash Dive Center. This tiny uninhabited island is located about 45 minutes offshore from Placencia and offers some of the best snorkeling in Belize. You and your friends can snorkel with tropical fish, sea turtles, sting rays, and even nurse sharks. You’ll get to experience the crystal clear waters and stunning marine life of Belize.

We did two snorkel swims. Before lunch, you swim in a circle around the entire island. Then after lunch, you swim out a ways to another reef. After those two experiences, they then take you to another area by boat where you can swim with nurse sharks, sting rays, and if you are lucky sea turtles. There were no turtles they day I went, just sharks and sting rays.

Sunset Cruise

One of the best ways to end your day is by taking a sunset cruise. You and your girlfriends can enjoy light bites and wine while taking in the beautiful sunset views of Placencia. It’s the perfect way to unwind after a day of exploring. We went with Splash Dive Center. They don’t really advertise that they offer this but you can request it. I loved their staff so it’s worth asking if they can do it.

Try Belizean Foods

At breakfast, try some Johnny cakes or fry bread. For lunch or dinner, have some conch soup or conch ceviche.

When is the best time to visit Palencia?

We visited in October which I found to be lovely. But for the top weather conditions February – May is recommended. The average temperature in October for us was a high of  90°F during the day and a low of 80°F at night.

What to Pack for Palencia

  • Sunglasses, Sunscreen, Insect repellent, Water bottle, Hat, Long pants & light long-sleeved shirt, Swimwear, hiking & water shoes, casual comfortable clothing, cameras, chargers, binoculars
  • Prescription medicines that will last during your stay (if applicable); remedies for headaches and upset stomach could be bought at stores (if you prefer particular brands it is recommended to pack your own)

Other Things to Know about Palencia

  • Non-Belizeans pay a $39.25 USD departure tax, however, this should be included in your international airfare
  • 12.5 % GST is charged on all goods and services
  • Time Zone: GMT-6 (same as US Central Time. We do not observe Daylight Saving Time)
  • Exchange rate: $1.00 USD = $2.00 BZD (US dollars widely accepted)
  • Tipping: You are expected to tip. Suggested average tip is normally 10% and 15% for exemplary service.

Conclusion:

A girlfriend getaway to Placencia, Belize, is the perfect way to unplug, unwind, and reconnect with your friends. From luxurious accommodations at Naia Resort and Spa, a day at the resort’s spa, snorkeling at Silk Caye, and a sunset cruise, you are guaranteed to have a wonderful time. This plan would also make for a great honeymoon. Plan your trip today and make memories that will last a lifetime!

Looking for a luxurious beachfront escape? The Naia Resort and Spa in Placencia Belize is a perfect destination to relax, unwind, and indulge in the splendor of nature across 19 acres. Placencia, known as the “barefoot perfect” village, is an ideal location for beach lovers and travelers wanting to rejuvenate and regain their energy. In this blog post, we will explore the luxurious amenities and activities that the Naia Resort and Spa has to offer.

Discover the Luxury of Naia Resort and Spa in Placencia, Belize

My best friend Lindsey and I jetted off to Belize (a new country for both of us) for a quick girl’s trip. Our top priorities for the trip included beach front, great food, a spa we could take advantage of, safety, and a peaceful atmosphere. We wanted relaxation, not a party atmosphere. Needless to say, we were beyond happy with our resort choice and felt completely safe the entire time.

AccommodationsNaia Resort and Spa in Placencia Belize

Naia Resort and Spa offers 35 beautiful and luxurious beachfront villas, suites, and bungalows that offer guests a tranquil and peaceful space to unwind. I about fell over when I saw how nice they were. To say I was happy to be staying here is an understatement.

The villas are spacious and come with a private deck with a table and chairs that provide breathtaking views of the Caribbean waters and lush gardens if yours is beachfront like mine was! Each villa features a king-size bed with fine Italian linens, outdoor showers, and plunge pools (if your unit has one, mine did not) to pamper guests with the ultimate luxury experience.

The bed is a touch hard but the a/c works great which is more important!

In the bathroom were makeup wipes, q-tips, shampoo, conditioner, body wash, and lotion.

Out front, I had two hammocks and if you request to have beach chairs they will set up a few chairs at the beach for you.

Spa and Wellness

Naia Resort and Spa
The Spa area at Naia Resort

The resort’s opulent spa provides a full-service menu of massages, body treatments, and facials developed to relax the mind and body. The spa offers unique treatments using high-end Eminence products that enhance relaxation, rejuvenation, and overall wellness. The unique setting of the spa, surrounded by lush vegetation, provides a tranquil environment for guests to enjoy the treatments.

I had a treatment that kicked off with a foot wash out of the deck of my spa cabana, followed by a lengthy foot reflexology treatment, and finished with a facial. The facial was absolutely divine and had so many steps I lost count around 15. I was just too relaxed to continue keeping track. Each treatment room is separate from the others making it extremely private.

Be sure to bring your swimsuit with you because they have a pool for you to enjoy at the spa. They will even bring you a cocktail or smoothie if you like. I decided to have a Spanish coffee while I lounged in the pool. The setting is serene so plan to spend up to an hour here. They do not have a sauna or whirlpool.

Around Naia Resort and Spa

Water Activities

The Naia Resort and Spa offers various water activities right on the beach. Guests can take a dip in the resort’s pool or explore the beauty of the Caribbean waters. The resort provides snorkel equipment, kayaks, and paddleboards to explore. I found the water was too rough for us to paddleboard. Not sure if that’s an October thing or not. Also, the water is warm.

Other ActivitiesGiant Jenga and Cornhole at Naia Resort and Spa

They also have sand volleyball, giant Jenga, and cornhole.

Culinary ExperienceDinner at Naia Resort and Spa

When it comes to dining, the Naia Resort and Spa offers a wide range of options. Whether you want a romantic dinner by the beach, a casual breakfast in bed, or a delicious and healthy meal, the resort’s restaurant offers a diverse culinary experience. The on-site restaurant, 1981, serves farm-to-table cuisine inspired by Belizean and international flavors. Keep in mind that this resort is not all-inclusive so if you want to have lunch or dinner here you will be paying.

Every day at dinner there was special. Sometimes it was a special entree and other times it was a special dessert. This means you can dine here several times and have a different experience each time. Breakfast at Naia Resort and Spa

Their basic breakfast is included which is toast, pastries, and homemade jam. If you want to get something else like the Belizian breakfast sandwich they will reduce the price by $10.

We tried a variety of cocktails while we were here. They have a fun cocktail menu and they were all good. If you order an Aperol spritz be sure to tell them, no lime! I never understand why some Caribbean areas put lime in them. It ruins it in my opinion.

Fitness

They have a well-equipped gym and a yoga studio. The gym had four foam rollers which is super important to me. There were treadmills, weight machines, and more. Sadly, I forgot to take a picture of the room.

Naia Resort and Spa on the beachCultural Experience

Placencia Village offers unique cultural experiences that guests can savor during their stay. The village is home to various activities from traditional drumming and dancing, guided tours to the Mayan ruins, and visiting a nearby Garifuna village. The resort staff can help guests plan their activities to ensure they have the best cultural experiences.

Shuttle Service

They have a shuttle that goes into town three times a day, which is included in the cost of your stay. Their shuttle will also take you back and forth to the airport. You will definitely want to go into the village at least once. It’s super cool looking with quite a few places to eat.

What you need to bring

I highly recommend bringing mosquito wipes to ensure you cover yourself enough. We were eaten up with bug bits. If you happen to forget bug spray there’s some near the bar next to the pool. They have some sunscreen there as well.

The sun is extremely intense here so you will want to constantly wear sunscreen as well. Even if you are snorkeling you will need to make sure that you are fully covered!

You will get bitten so bring some cortisone to stop the itching. If you have room in your suitcase I would also bring the bug bite thing to try to reduce the itch.

Throw some tiny liquor bottles into your luggage because drinking at this resort adds up quickly! You could also purchase some booze at the main airport in Belize. Once you are at the resort you may or may not end up at a store. I thought we would but never managed to make it. I regretted not having a few tiny vodka bottles with me. They do give you a welcome drink that they will put liquor in if you want. Even if you don’t want it, take it and put it in your fridge for later.
