If you’re looking for the best beaches in Ksamil, Albania, you’ve come to the right place. In this blog post, we’ll list our 10 favorite beaches in Ksamil and tell you a little bit about each one. So whether you’re looking for a secluded beach or a beach with all the amenities, we have something for everyone on this list!

10 Best Beaches in Ksamil

Here are ten of the best beaches in this scenic town, perfect for swimming, sunbathing and enjoying the incredible views. Whether you’re looking for a secluded spot to bask in the sun or a lively beach with plenty of activities, Ksamil has something for everyone. So pack your swimsuit and sunscreen and get ready for some serious beach time!

Ksamil BeachKsamil, Albania best beach

Ksamil Beach (Plazhi Ksamilit) is the main beach in town and among the most popular with locals and tourists alike. Here, you can find the most amenities, the most crowds, and the biggest selection of seaside dining options.

All of the sunbeds are owned by the neighboring restaurants and the prices vary depending on which you select. Some that are priced closer to the shoreline are more expensive than those in the back, for example.

Augusto Beach

Augusto-Beach-ksamil

Augusto Beach in Ksamil is an excellent option for those who don’t want to hear the loud, thumping bass from the local restaurants or the piercing shrieks of hundreds of small children. While, undoubtedly, you will run into some families here, Augusto Beach is one of the most laid-back beaches in Ksamil.

That being said, it also lacks many of the common amenities that you find at some of the town’s more popular beaches, like a large selection of restaurants. Packing up some waters, beer, and snacks from a local market or bakery is a great option if you want to take advantage of the smaller crowds.

One other thing worth noting about Augusto Beach is that it is not quite as sandy as some of the other best beaches in Ksamil, which means you may want to invest in some water shoes to avoid any unpleasant cuts on your feet.

Paradise Beach10 Best Beaches in Ksamil, Albania Paradise BeachParadise Beach ksamil

Paradise Beach is among the most popular beaches in Ksamil, noted among Instagrammers and influencers alike for its picturesque jetty that juts out into the sparkling, turquoise waters. With its surge in popularity, you can bet there are a number of crowds to contend with in the midst of the high season.

Definitely head to Paradise Beach around 8:00 AM in order to secure yourself a prime spot in the sand.

Ksamil Beach 9Ksamil-9 beach

Rilinda Beach10 Best Beaches in Ksamil, Albania Rilinda Beachrilinda beach ksamil 1

Rilinda Beach is one of the nicest beaches in Ksamil for both the quality of the chaise lounges, the surrounding restaurants, and the fact that it’s slightly less crowded than Ksamil Beach.

If you want to splurge on a beach bed with a private mermaid net, you can find them in front of Abiori Restaurant. The total cost for a beach bed for the day was 100 euros.

The only downside to this (aside from the exorbitant price) was that there were many people trying to get into your net to take photos!

You can find these mermaid nets at other beaches (the other beach we found them at was Puerto Rico Beach, below), but the water is the clearest and clean at Rilinda Beach. At least, it was when we visited.

Abiori Restaurant, who rents out the beach chairs on the beach in front of the restaurant, is delicious! The staff is very friendly, they offer a selection of fresh fish – you can pick out your fish from a display case showing the daily catches – and the drinks are affordable. I had the calamari there twice and was not disappointed. This says a lot considering I come from Rhode Island, where our state official appetizer is calamari!

Puerto Rico Beach10 Best Beaches in Ksamil, Albania Puerto Rico Beach

We wound up at Puerto Rico Beach after espying the mermaid nets across the bay from Ksamil Beach 9 one day. I really wanted another beach bed / mermaid net day, but didn’t want to shell out as much cash as we did at Rilinda Beach, so we decided to go check out their prices. I was blown away that the cost was so much cheaper – 40 euros compared to 100 euros at Rilinda!

That being said, the location is not as nice. The water had some litter and debris floating in it – candy wrappers, trash, etc. There is also a boat dock right next to the beach beds, so there is a lot of commotion going on with people getting on and off the boats.

The beach itself is relatively quiet in comparison to some of the beaches further north in Ksamil. There are still plenty of children laughing, screaming, and jumping in the water off the docks, but that just comes with the territory!

There is only one restaurant nearby, which was decent enough, though not the same caliber as Abiori or the other restaurants to the north.

Isole Gemelle di KsamilIsole Gemelle di Ksamil

If you happen to venture out to the largest of the Ksamil islands to enjoy this secluded beach, you should be sure to go early! The beach itself is very small, so if you want to secure a prime spot in the sand, you’ll need to leave in the morning. We left on a boat around 11:00 AM and there were only 2 – 3 spots left.

It should be noted that there are only about 10 beach chairs here, but plenty of umbrellas available to rent if you want to put your towels down below.

The island is rocky and composed of jagged, volcanic soil, so even if you’re putting your towel down, you’ll want to get there early to get a soft spot. Ours was anything but comfortable!

There’s a small shack on the island that serves water and beer, and a toilet you can hike to. Well, it’s more of an outhouse, but it does the trick.

Expect to be very close to your neighbors at this beach, as it fills up quickly and is the smallest of all the Ksamil beaches we visited.

Lori Beach10 Best Beaches in Ksamil, Albania Lori Beach

Lori Beach in Ksamil is known for being the place for families to go. Similar to the other best beaches in Ksamil, it’s made up of a combination of white sand and small pebbles. Little ones should definitely wear beach shoes on all Ksamil beaches, as you never know when you’ll come upon a rocky area.

As with the other popular beaches in Ksamil, Lori Beach gets obscenely crowded during the high season. Some have complained that it’s difficult to see the sand between all of the people and sun chairs.

However, regardless of the month that you’re traveling to Ksamil, Lori Beach will be your best option if you’re traveling with children. The water is calm and shallow, perfect for safe swimming for children.

Bora Bora BeachBora-Bora-Beach-Ksamil

Ksamil Bora Bora Beach is a dreamy paradise located in the Mediterranean. If you’re looking for a cheerful, sun-kissed adventure, Ksamil is the perfect place! With its miles of golden sand and sparkling blue water, Ksamil will give you a beach day you’ll never forget. After working on your tan all day, grab an al fresco dinner at one of Ksamil’s local restaurants for some fresh seafood and incredible views.

Ksamil Beach 7

Ksamil Beach 7 is an incredible experience for any beach-goer! Located on the majestic Albanian Riviera with remarkable scenery, Ksamil Beach 7 provides not only an amazing sandy beach but also a restaurant and beach bar to create the perfect atmosphere.

Whether it be a day out from nearby Ksamil Town or coming from further away, Ksamil Beach 7 offers something for everyone. Whether you want to relax in golden sand, grab a great meal at their restaurant or just doze off listening to the soothing sound of waves rolling in, Ksamil Beach 7 will provide an unforgettable experience all year round!

Things To Know About Visiting Ksamil Beaches

UmbrellasUmbrellas-Ksamil

As adorable and charming as they are, the straw umbrellas do not fold down. If you’re looking to get a tan and maximize soaking up the sun, opt for a beach chair that comes with a fabric umbrella instead. This way, you can raise or lower the umbrella according to the location of the sun and how much exposure you want.

Traveling to Ksamil with my husband was a bit of a pain in the ass, as I wanted to read and he wanted to tan – so we always had to find the chairs that offered maximum sun exposure!

Snacks

Need something to munch on? Locals are often weaving their way through the sun beds with fresh fruits or sweet treats that resemble profiteroles smothered in chocolate sauce. Not an ideal beach snack, in my opinion, but if you’re craving something sweet, it’s an option!

There are restaurants separating the sand from the road in most instances, so you’ll never go hungry at Ksamil beaches.

Best Time to Visit Ksamil Beaches

Visiting the Ksamil beaches of Albania is an experience you won’t soon forget! Due to the mild Mediterranean climate, these waters are perfect for a summer escape. The best time to visit starts in May when temperatures are more moderate and the beaches fill with excitement.

With crystal-clear turquoise waters, chill-out bars along the beachfront, and plenty of sunbathing spots, there’s something for everyone here! July and August tend to be peak tourist months but there will never be a shortage of party vibes no matter when you choose to come. Soaking up some rays in Ksamil during the summer will be an unforgettable experience that you won’t want to miss!

Best Ksamil Restaurantsfood-ksamilfood ksamil

Guvat

The best place to eat in Ksamil, hands-down. We went there a number of times because of how good the food is – not to mention, Guvat offers up the most spectacular sunset views in Ksamil.

Recommendations: Fried veal with sauce, stuffed meatballs, grilled veggies, beef with okra, linguine Guvat

Abiori

Great lunch spot if you’re relaxing at Rilinda Beach. The servers are extremely attentive without being pushy.

Recommendations: Chicken soup, calamari

Veliaj Traditional Grill & Pizza

This is a bit off-the-beaten-path, but it was en route from our VRBO, so we went there a lot. It’s

Two other great pizza places are Palma Restaurant & Pizza and Oxhaku Bar & Restaurant.

Stand on the heel of Italy and gaze eastward at the place where the Adriatic and Ionian Seas meet, and on a clear day, you’ll see the distant mountains of Albania, a country that’s both immensely romantic and yet often overlooked by those tracing their fingers across European maps to plan their next loved-up trip.

So with that in mind, why not treat yourself to an adventure that few other people you know will have embarked upon? As you and your loved one yearn for an escape both enriching and intimate, Albania answers with open arms. Let’s explore how this hidden gem can turn a simple getaway into an unforgettable chapter in your story as a couple.

The Eternal Promises of Gjirokaster’s Old Bazaar
gjirokaster

Nestled among the undulating hills of Gjirokaster, a town that’s fluent in the language of history and enchantment, you’ll discover an old bazaar brimming with artisanal mastery. It’s a place where romance is etched into every stone pathway, setting the scene for a timeless gesture. Within this captivating market, you’ll find everything from clothing made by locals to foods and spices sourced from near and far.

Moreover, it’s a good idea to take time before your trip to explore engagement rings made with lab-grown diamonds, so that if you do decide that this is the perfect place to pop the question, you’ll have some serious sparkle to back you up.

A Secret Serenade at Rozafa Castle

Perched upon a hill, the ancient stones of Rozafa Castle tell a tale that dates back to antiquity. It’s a place where legends are as tangible as the walls encircling it, setting an ideal stage for an evening of whispered legends under the stars. As you walk hand-in-hand through the storied gates, let myth blend with reality in this stronghold of passion.

The castle becomes your secret theater—a private serenade awaits as musicians play age-old Albanian melodies. Here, isolated from the rush of modern life and bathed in moonlight, you share dances meant only for two. In these moments, away from prying eyes, steps synchronize to rhythms that echo through time. Your romantic getaway is now inked into history’s grand narrative—Rozafa’s embrace tightens around your shared experience, etching itself into your hearts forever.

The Unforgettable Flavors of Tirana
tirana

In Tirana, you’ll find a city that pulsates with life, its vibrant streets a canvas for the new and the traditional to create a unique blend. A visit here is one of the best things you can do during an Albania getaway, so pack some comfy shoes and get ready for a ramble.

Venture into one of the city’s hidden gastronomic jewels, perhaps an intimate eatery tucked away in the trendy Blloku district. Here, chefs are in charge, transforming locally sourced ingredients into plates that narrate Albania’s rich heritage through taste. Underneath a canopy of intertwined vines and soft lighting, savor dishes that tell stories of sea and land—each bite a layer of discovery on your romantic retreat.

The Canvas of Nature at Theth National Park
Theth National Park

Far from the murmur of city life lies a sanctuary where nature’s hand paints scenes of unfettered beauty. Theth National Park is a canvas alive with hues of green and blue, its landscape a masterpiece that invites couples to write their own pastoral romance.

Begin your day at sunrise in this unspoiled wilderness, trailing paths that weave through towering peaks and echoing valleys. Seek the hidden pearl—an azure waterfall within the park—that murmurs tales only heard by those who venture deep enough. Here, secluded by pines and kissed by mist, affirm silent promises as the water bestows its eternal blessing.

A Sunset Rendezvous at Ksamil Beach
Ksamil, Albania best beach

As the sun performs its daily adieu, let the sands of Ksamil Beach be your front-row seats to the spectacle. This strip of paradise, where water paints a gradient from turquoise to deep blue, offers more than just a seaside retreat—it’s an amphitheater for nature’s grand performance.

Lay a blanket on the fine sand and uncork a bottle of local wine as amber light bathes you both. Ksamil’s waters calmly applaud the sky’s changing palette, while distant islands stand as silent witnesses to your intimate gathering. As daylight wanes, watch seabirds trace poetry across the horizon—every stroke an artist’s final touch on today’s canvas.

Wrapping Up

While there’s certainly a ruggedness to Albania not normally associated with European destinations, it rewards romantic travelers who are intrepid enough to explore what it has to offer. So pack your bags, bring a ring just in case, and get ready for some seriously special experiences in this underappreciated region.

The post Corfu to Saranda by Ferry: All You Need to Know appeared first on Mommy Travels.

]]>
The Ionian island of Corfu, Greece is a popular stopover for summer travelers passing between countries due to its many ferry connections. The huge island is conveniently located between Italy and Greece (as well as other Balkan countries). It offers routes from Corfu to Saranda (Albania), many Italian ports, as well as a few Greek islands.

Considering the fact that flights to the Balkans are not as abundant as those to Western Europe and popular resort destinations, you can imagine the popularity of taking the ferry from Corfu to some stunningly hidden gems along the Balkan coastline during the summer months.

One such option is taking the ferry from Corfu to Saranda, Albania. With a travel time of anywhere between 35 minutes to over 2 hours, you can choose the option that best suits your travel style. Regardless of how fast your ferry is, you’ll pass through stunning scenery complete with densely forested islands and sandy, seemingly desolate beaches.

We’ve covered everything you need to know about taking the ferry from Corfu to Saranda for your next epic summer vacation.

What Ferry Lines Travel from Corfu to Saranda?

There are several ferry lines that operate between Corfu and Saranda. The most popular and well-known line is Ionian Seaways, which has been in operation for over 20 years. This ferry line offers daily service between the two ports, with multiple departures each day.

Other ferry lines that operate between Corfu and Saranda include Finikas Lines and Joy Lines. These lines offer less frequent service than Ionian Seaways. However, they may offer cheaper fares or more departure times that fit your schedule.

When planning your trip, be sure to check the schedules and fares of all ferry lines operating between Corfu and Saranda to find the best option for you. I like to use Ferry Scanner to find the best deal

Where Can I Purchase Tickets for the Ticket from Corfu to Saranda?

If you are traveling during the high season, we recommend that you purchase your tickets from Corfu to Saranda online. This can be done a few days before the scheduled ferry departure.

Even in September, we had a hard time finding a spot on the early morning ferry when trying to purchase at the port on the day of our travel.

Your best bet is to purchase online in advance! You can compare all the ferry routes for your day of travel at Ferry Scanner. Alternatively, you can book with the ferry operator directly.

You can also book in-person at the various ferry operators. However, you should try to arrive a day or two in advance to secure your spot.

How Long is the Ferry from Corfu to Saranda?

The ferry from Corfu to Saranda is a short but beautiful journey. The crossing takes between 35 minutes and upwards of 2 hours depending on which ferry you choose. The views of both the Albanian and Greek coasts are stunning, with gorgeous sunsets if you’re traveling in the evening.

This is a popular route for tourists visiting both countries, as it is an easy and affordable way to travel between them. There are several ferries operating per day, so you can easily find a time that suits your schedule. And once you’re in Saranda, you’ll be able to enjoy all the wonderful beaches, restaurants, and attractions that this lively seaside town has to offer.

Take a quick taxi or bus ride to the seaside village of Ksamil, nicknamed the ‘Maldives of Europe’ for its stunning white sand beaches with clear, turquoise waters. 10 Best Beaches in Ksamil, Albania

How Much Does the Ferry from Corfu to Saranda Cost?

The ferry from Corfu to Saranda costs around €20-40 for a one-way ticket. The exact cost depends on the ferry line you choose as well as whether you opt for a high-speed ferry or a slow boat.

The above picture is of the high-speed boat, which looks like a boat on skis, as it doesn’t entirely touch the water. For one trip we took the fast boat, and for another, we took the slow boat. Either are fine, so long as you plan accordingly! You have better views from the slow boat.

How Does Passport Control Operate on the Ferry from Corfu to Saranda?

Greece is a European Union member, as well as a member of the Schengen States. Albania is neither of these and so passports are required to cross the border between the two countries.

You will need to arrive at customs an hour prior to your scheduled ferry departure in order to ensure enough time to get through. It can get unbearably hot during the throes of summer, even worse if you don’t make it on time and are stuck waiting in line outside, baking under the intense Greek sun. Your best bet is to arrive a little earlier than you need to and wait inside to avoid having to stand out in the heat if, like me, you’re particularly sensitive to it.

Be sure to get your snacks and drinks before you pass through or you’ll have to pass through again (and wait in line, again).

After the ferry docks in Saranda, you’ll pass through passport control on the Albanian side.

How Many Times Per Day Does the Ferry Travel from Corfu to Saranda?

During the high season, both Finikas Lines and Ionian Seaways have three ferry crossings per day, so six in total. Joy Lines operates 14 crossings per week, with the number on each day varying depending on the day of the week.

There are fewer crossings in the winter, so if you’re traveling during the off-season, be sure to look at the ferry schedule and timetable in advance.

Is There Food at the Ports in Corfu or Saranda?

In both the Port of Corfu and the Port of Saranda, there is a small cafe inside the passport control building. In both instances, the cafe is outside of passport control, so be sure to get what you need before you get in line.

They have non-alcoholic drinks, coffees, beer, wine, liquor, pastries, sandwiches, and other portable options. The ham and cheese pie in Corfu was surprisingly good (so much so that I am still thinking about it!).

Can I Bring My Car on the Ferry from Corfu to Saranda?

Yes! You can bring your vehicle on the ferry. However, if you are renting a car, be sure to check with the rental agency ahead of time with regard to taking the vehicle into a non-EU country, as many rental agencies don’t allow it.

Can I Bring My Pet on the Ferry from Corfu to Saranda?

Yes! You can bring your furry friend with you on the ferry as well. Be sure to specify this when booking your ticket if the option is available. Some lines, such as Finikas Lines, don’t charge pet fees.

Remember – There is a Time Change Between Greece and Albania!

Don’t make the same mistake I did – I booked a ferry ticket for 19:00 which was scheduled to arrive at 19:15. Amazing! I found the only 15-minute ferry from Corfu to Saranda! Wrong. I didn’t realize that there was a 1 hour time difference between the two countries, making my journey 1 hour and 15 minutes.

That would have been all well and good, save for the fact that I had scheduled a ride in Saranda to take us to Ksamil, and I didn’t pack any snacks (at dinnertime, no less).

Ksamil is a small seaside town in southern Albania located in the municipality of Sarandë. It is known for its beautiful beaches, crystal-clear waters, and lush vegetation. The town is surrounded by several islands, which can be reached by boat (or swim, if you’re feeling adventurous).

Ksamil is a popular tourist destination for both Albanians and foreigners alike, having developed in recent years into a full-blown tourist hot spot. Considering its close proximity with Western Europe via Corfu, Greece, it’s no wonder that southern Europeans are flocking to this little slice of paradise on the Albanian Riviera.

When I first discovered a cheap rate for tickets from Cluj-Napoca to Corfu, I knew I had to take the opportunity to visit Albania. It’s a place that had been on my bucket list for seemingly eons, ever since I first learned that Americans could spend one year visa-free in Albania. It was one of my potential digital nomad destinations, though I never got around to checking it out.

How to Get to Ksamil, Albania

Ferry from Corfu to Ksamil, Albania with sunset in the background and people on the boat.

The closest international airport to Ksamil is in Corfu, Greece. There is a ferry from Corfu to Saranda, which operates a few times per day in the summer. The ferry duration varies between 35 minutes and 2.5 hours depending on the ferry you choose. Following the ferry, you take a taxi or bus to Ksamil, which takes around 20 – 45 minutes depending on your means of travel. This is the easiest (and fastest) way to get to Ksamil.

Alternatively, you can fly into Tirana, Albania’s capital, and drive to Ksamil. The drive is a long one, however, and takes about 6 hours by car or bus. There are no train routes that operate between Tirana and Ksamil, as the rail system in Albania is sorely lacking.

Depending on where you are coming from, you may find more flight options to Corfu anyhow, so your best bet is to fly into Greece and take the ferry to Albania.

If you happen to be in Italy, there is also a ferry from Bari to Corfu, and then Corfu to Saranda.

Best Time to Visit Ksamil, Albania

Beach in Ksamil, Albania under bright blue sky with many parasols.

If you’re looking for a sunny beach vacation, the best time to visit Ksamil is from June to September. During this time, the weather is warm and sunny, making it perfect for swimming, sunbathing, and enjoying all that the beach has to offer.

However, if you’re looking for a more relaxed vacation, October through May is the best time to visit. The temperatures are milder during this time, so you can enjoy all of Ksamil’s outdoor activities without feeling too hot or overcrowded. Still, many establishments close down during the off-season, so you will have less options in terms of food and drinks.

We visited during the last week of August and first week of September. The temperatures were not unbearable, the crowds had mostly dissipated, and the locals seemed largely relaxed at the notion that they were nearly done with the season. I’d recommend visiting between April-June or September-October if you want to beat the crowds but still enjoy open restaurants and plenty of beach time.

Is Ksamil Expensive?

Woven tapestries very colorful in Ksamil, Albania

I was shocked at the prices when we arrived in Ksamil! Based on what my previous expectations were, I can say that yes, Ksamil is quite expensive. This could be due in part to the fact that it was the first ‘normal’ summer following the pandemic, when tourist destinations were trying to play catch-up.

Dinner or lunch for two (with two glasses of wine and two beers) was routinely between 50-60 euros, which is about on par with what we spend for the same thing in Romania. However, based on previous reviews and testimonies, we expected the prices to be much lower.

The first expense we paid upon arrival was two beach towels and a bottle of sunscreen, which came to around 70 euros.

While Ksamil isn’t expensive in comparison to many tourist destinations in Western Europe or the United States, it was much higher than we were anticipating.

Things to Do in Ksamil, Albania

Admittedly, there isn’t a whole lot to do in Ksamil. There are a number of beaches to enjoy, but besides that, there’s not much unless you go into Saranda or Butrint.

Beaches of Ksamil, Albania

There are a number of different beaches that line the coast of Ksamil. We explored most of them during our seven-day stint in Ksamil, and figured out which were best suited for our tastes (and which had the best restaurants nearby!). Our favorites were Puerto Rico Beach and Ksamil Beach, as these boasted the beautiful beach beds with mermaid-inspired nets jutting out over the crystal clear waters.

Check out our guide to the beaches of Ksamil for more information on which beach would suit you best!

Butrint National Park

Butrint National Park ruins in Albania, a short drive from Ksamil.

Butrint National Park is a protected area in Albania that was established in 2000, just 3 kilometers away from Ksamil. The park covers an area of 122 square kilometers and is home to a variety of flora and fauna. The park is also recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Butrint National Park is located in the Sarandë District, in the southernmost part of Albania. It is situated on a peninsula that is surrounded by Lake Butrinti and the Ionian Sea.

The park’s ecosystem is diverse and includes both Mediterranean and Illyrian species of plants and animals. Some of the notable species found in the park include the brown bear, European badger, red deer, wild boar, golden eagle, peregrine falcon, and Albanian fir.

The Butrint National Park is a popular tourist destination due to its natural beauty and archaeological significance. The park contains a number of ruins from different periods of history, including a Greek theater, an ancient Roman baths complex, and a medieval castle.

The Butrint National Park is an important site for the conservation of Albanian biodiversity. The park is also a valuable resource for scientific research and education.

You can get to Butrint from Ksamil via bus, which departs hourly during the tourist season.

Watersports

Though we saw signs for jet skis on virtually every corner in Ksamil, we could not for the life of us find jet skis available to rent. My guess was that there was a recent change in law, as we didn’t see any jet skis on the water, either.

There were, however, plenty of kayaks, including glass bottom kayaks to admire the clear sea beneath you.

There were an obscene number of pedal boats, which were available to rent in order to explore the surrounding islands and coastline. We rented one for the day at the cost of 10 euros per hour (for three hours we paid 3500 LEK).

We also saw these interesting floating bicycles, though we couldn’t figure out where to rent them.

Looking down at the Blue Eye in Albania

The Blue Eye in Albania is a natural phenomenon that has captivated the attention of locals and tourists alike. There is a legend in Albania that says that if you visit the Blue Eye, a natural spring in the country, and make a wish, it will come true. This beautiful blue hole is actually a spring that has been formed over time by the collapse of an underground cave.

The spring gets its name from its deep blue color, which is said to be caused by sunlight reflecting off the limestone at the bottom of the pool. The water is crystal clear and very cold, even in summer.

People have been visiting the Blue Eye for centuries, believing that its waters have healing properties. Today, it is one of Albania’s most popular tourist destinations.

So what is the story behind this legend? No one knows for sure, but one thing is certain: the Blue Eye is a place of beauty and mystery that continues to enchant all who visit it.

The Blue Eye is about a 50 minute drive from Ksamil. Most taxis will be happy to bring you there and arrange for a pickup time. There are also guided tours available.

Explore the Ksamil Islands

Umbrellas on volcanic island in Ksamil, Albania.

Take a boat trip or pedal boat to one of the three islands to explore! The islands are incredibly small for the most part. There is one island, the largest of the three, that has a few umbrellas set up as well as a tiny shack serving beer and water. It gets super-crowded, so if you want to spend the day on the island, get a boat ride out early.

If you want to explore the two smaller islands, you can actually swim out to them from the main stretches of sand in Ksamil.

Where to Eat in Ksamil, Albania

Sunset view from dinner at Guvat in Ksamil, Albania

There are a wide variety of delicious restaurants in Ksamil, but without a doubt, the tour de force is Guvat. We ended up there 4 times over the course of our week in Ksamil, once for my birthday dinner.

Guvat has hands-down the best view in town, overlooking the Ksamil islands and beautiful waters. It’s a great spot to catch a romantic sunset as well. Try the fried veal in sauce, beef with okra, stuffed meatball, grilled cheese appetizer, grilled veggies, and linguine Guvat. The veal in sauce was the best, cooked to perfection alongside a few fingerling potatoes.

In terms of places to avoid, we had pretty bad experiences at the Castle Hotel Restaurant and Bella Vista, which are conveniently located next to one another in front of Plaja 9. The calamari at Castle Hotel Restaurant was completely inedible – chewy, hard, and bland. At Bella Vista, the chicken soup smelled and tasted of sheer fish – an unfortunate choice for my husband who doesn’t eat fish.

Where to Stay in Ksamil, Albania

I stayed in a VRBO that was a short 10 minute walk to most of the local beaches. However, based on the number of rooms available closer to the town’s ‘center’, I would forego the Airbnb in the future and book a room upon arrival (provided you aren’t visiting during the high season). You’ll find cheaper accommodations and a shorter walk to restaurants and beaches.

Things To Know Before Visiting Ksamil, Albania

Large statue at the entrance of a restaurant in Ksamil, Albania

It’s a Bit Dirty!

Ksamil has an unofficial nickname as ‘the Maldives of Europe’, which I learned of before we visited. Though I’ve never visited the Maldives, I can safely say that this nickname is not exactly warranted. While Ksamil has its charm, it also needs a lot of work.

It’s evident that touristic development has helped some local hotels, but the piles of garbage that litter the side of the road is not only unsightly, but gives off a god-awful smell as well.

Bring a Hot Spot

If you are a digital nomad or rely on WiFi for any other aspects of your life, I recommend bringing a hotspot. There was one unfortunate rainy day while we were there, and I’d brought my laptop to get some work done in case of such an event. The network provided by my Airbnb host wouldn’t even show up on my laptop, let alone foster a connection.

Tipping in Ksamil, Albania

We spoke with a lot of service employees during our week-long stay in Ksamil. All of them were quite excited when they learned that I was American and my husband Romanian, because we ‘actually tip.’ Unfortunately, many of Albania’s closer neighbors don’t tip, though leaving something is customary in Albania.

The service was very good virtually everywhere we went, so we tipped what my normal standard is, 20%, virtually everywhere. We frequented the same establishments many times and the servers all remembered us and treated us very well.

I’m hardwired to tip 20% as an American and as a former bartender, but 10% is acceptable.

Is Ksamil, Albania Safe?

While we only spent a week there, I felt nothing short of safe during the entire trip. I went for walks alone at night and didn’t encounter anything unsavory.

Overall Thoughts on Ksamil, Albania

Rainbow over Ksamil, Albania

While I thought it was a lovely town with very friendly locals, my expectations were built up quite a bit due to the ‘Maldives of Europe’ nickname. It was a slight disappointment in terms of natural beauty, crowds, and prices. While I loved our time there, I feel it’s a one-and-done for me – the beaches in Rhodes and other Greek islands were far more beautiful with much clearer water.

Still, it’s for sure worth a visit even just for a few days!
