At this point, I’ve traveled extensively with my teens and tween and unfortunately, I know firsthand how stressful things can suddenly become because they are not having a good time on the trip. There are few things worse than a moody teenager on vacation that does not want to participate in any of the activities.

For a while, I gave up and let my oldest kid sit in the hotel room while the rest of us had fun, but eventually, I realized I needed to change the type of trips we were taking. Our trips needed to be way more exciting and physically active, especially if they’ve been stuck in the car on a road trip. With these two things in mind, here are my picks for the top US vacation for teens and tweens.

Top 9 Destinations for Teens and Tweens in the United States

Oahu

Oahu is an epic place to take tweens and teens year-round. The weather is consistently good and there is much to do, especially if your family enjoys water sports. Some suggested activities in Oahu that teens will likely appreciate are:

• Para-sailing
• Visiting North Shore and learning to surf
• Paddle-boarding up the Anahulu River to watch the sea turtles
• Hiking to the top of Diamond Head
• Kayaking from Lanikai Beach out to Moku Nui Island and back. 
• Hike Maunawili Falls – This hike takes you deep into the jungle, where you cross a river twice, and at the end, you are rewarded with a waterfall, and if they are brave enough, cliff jumping.

If possible, I highly recommend staying at Disney’s Aulani Resort and Spa. This resort has a teen program that your kids will actually want to go to. They get to participate in physical challenges, take animation classes, learn to play the ukulele, have parties just for them, and more. While your kids are off doing their own thing, you have peace of mind knowing that they are safe and having fun.

Kauai, Hawaii is also fantastic if you want something less mainstream.

Vail

Whether you visit in the summer or in the winter, tweens and teens will love Vail, Colorado.

In the summer, teens can zip line and adventure through multiple ropes courses at Epic Discovery up on the mountain. Plus, there are other activities like horseback riding, white water rafting, and mountain biking.

During the winter, tweens and teens can spend their time skiing and snowboarding across the massive mountain. Vail has free public transportation that’s easy to use, allowing kids to have a little independence roaming around on their own.

Universal Orlando

Universal Orlando houses many of the best roller coasters in the United States and has two extensive Harry Potter areas. Teens and tweens will love riding all the intense roller coasters. If your kids are like mine and want to ride the same roller coaster over and over, consider purchasing an Express Pass. This line pass will allow you to bypass almost every line there is in all three of the parks, which means there will be plenty of time to ride everything at least twice.

Recently, Universal Orlando added a water park, Volcano Bay. There are rarely any lines and you do not have to cart around your own raft or tubes for the slides. They’ve made using the water park easy, and with teens and tweens, the easier the better!

A nice plus is the city of Orlando, because when you are done hanging out at Universal, Orlando has lots of other things to do. Kids of all ages will get a kick out of taking a Wild Florida airboat out on the swamps and seeing alligators. Oh, and there’s always Disney World.  

Las Vegas

Las Vegas is not somewhere most think to take teenagers, but it is one of the most visited tourist destinations in the United States and there’s lots to do for all ages. Give the kids a thrill at the indoor skydiving facility or zip lining off the Rio casino at VooDoo Zip.

Other fun things to do include Gameworks, the massive indoor gaming facility, rocking climbing out at the Red Rocks, ATVing, and hanging out at some of the incredible hotel pools. The Wet N’ Wild in Las Vegas also has some extreme water rides. Teens will also like most of the Cirque Du Soleil shows in town. You can currently get Cirque Du Soleil discount tickets up to 50% off one of their shows in Vegas.

San Antonio

San Antonio, Texas is jammed packed with activities. They have two major theme parks, Six Flags and Sea World, not to mention one of the most extensive water parks in the world, Schlitterbahn. The nice thing is, teenagers can basically run off and do their own thing in all of these theme parks. Even along the River Walk, kids can go explore all on their own. While they shop around, parents can take a break over a drink and enjoy the River Walk in a slightly more grown-up way.

San Antonio also has a fantastic zoo, but you will want to skip it if the temperature is over 100 degrees outside. Instead, lather on the sunscreen and go float down the Comel River or Guadalupe River.

Panama City Beach

Another teen favorite in Florida is Panama City Beach. The beach has soft, powdery, white sand. It isn’t as big as many of the beach towns, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t a lot to do.

Go mini-golfing and go-carting, spend the day at the beach, or shop around at Pier Park. Spend one day bopping around Scenic 30A, where you will find tiny beach towns like Seaside or Rosemary. Renting some bicycles is a perfect way to explore this area. Another interesting spot worth venturing out to is Sandestin’s Baytowne Wharf. Here, families can indulge in boutique shopping, zip-lining, ropes courses, an arcade, and unique eateries.

Bend, Oregon

Bend, Oregon is another destination that is fantastic in the summer and in the winter. Year-round they have some of the best off-roading in the state!

During the summer, families will get a charge out of kayaking, white water rafting, and hiking. If your kids have never white water rafted before, take them down the Big Eddy. They will get a small taste of major rapids without being tossed around too terribly. Nearby, in Sunriver, there is a small water park and a little village to shop in.

During the winter you can ski and snowboard on Mt. Bachelor, and there’s an outdoor ice skating rink in Sunriver.

NYC

There are a lot of things to do for this age group in New York City year-round. During the winter season, everyone can ice skate for free in Bryant Park and shop at all the little shops that are set up temporarily. Plus, you can witness the acclaimed Rockettes performing and many other Christmas shows.

All year long, visitors can enjoy the major landmarks and attractions here, like seeing the Statue of Liberty or visiting Ground Zero. Once kids are age 10 and up they are old enough to go through the September 11th Memorial, and old enough to appreciate, or at least sit through, a Broadway show.

Palm Springs, California

Take teens on an adventure trip in Palm Springs with activities like four-wheelers or Jeep tours. Despite it being almost 100 degrees outside all three of my kids loved going on a Jeep tour of the San Andreas fault. Families can hike out at Coachella Valley Preserve or take the Palm Springs Aerial Tram up to Mt. San Jacinto State Park to hike in cooler temperatures.

I recommend staying at Omni Rancho Las Palmas near Palm Springs. They have several swimming pools and a lazy river.

To find great activities in any area I use Viator. If we are visiting a city with lots of popular attractions I always check CityPass, PogoPass, and GoCard to see if they have discount cards available. Groupon also tends to have a lot of local travel deals.

When I want to book a full-on multi-day tour I use TourRadar. They’ve got fantastic weekly deals. If going somewhere in Mexico or the Caribbean, I use Apple Vacations.

Rent a Car or Get a Lyft

There were notorious murders in the town of Lexington, and thirty-two men died in a railroad tunnel near the ghost town of Laurel. A neglected cemetery where mercury miners lie buried overlooks the community of New Almaden. These mountain towns have mostly gone back to the forest now, or have been covered by the waters that are stored for the thirsty citizens of bustling valley towns.

Holy City

 In 1919, former palm reader William E. Riker and about thirty of his followers moved to a community he named Holy City. They called their religion the Perfect Christian Divine Way. The “way” involved celibacy, except for Mr. Riker, temperance, white supremacy, segregation of the races, and segregation of the genders.

All members of his church gave up material possessions, to Riker, which is how he could afford to move his flock to the Santa Cruz Mountains. He turned Holy City into a lively tourist trap. Billboards along Highway 17 advertised the place with slogans like “If you are considering suicide, crime, or marriage, see us first.”

There was a gas station, where attendants filled radiators with “holy water.” There was a restaurant, and a comfort station with many stalls. A telescope was available, for 10 cents a view. There was a radio station, KFQU. It didn’t last long, but in its heyday it featured the voice of William E. Riker, The Comforter. Holy City was incorporated in 1926. It never had a church, but services were held in Riker’s home.

The population of Holy City was over 300 in the depression years, but declined in the 1940s. In 1942, Riker went on trial for sedition, due to his support of Adolf Hitler. He was acquitted. He ran for governor four times, never receiving many votes. He lost control of Holy City in 1959, and most of the town’s buildings happened to burn down about that time.

In the end, William Riker surprised his few remaining followers by converting to Catholicism. He died three years later, at the age of 96. Remnants of Holy City can still be found, on Old Santa Cruz highway quite near Highway 17. There is an art glass studio there, near the former home of William Riker.

Train Stations

Between 1880 and 1940, travelers left the town of Los Gatos by a narrow gauge train and made their way through the mountains just as quickly as commuters now do, stopping at a string of station towns along the way. The train’s original purpose was to carry lumber from the many sawmills of the mountains.

Alma and Laurel

The first stop was Alma, now submerged under Lexington reservoir. When the waters are very low, old foundations and roads show up on the lakebed. The town once had a sawmill, a smithy, a post office, a hotel, and a saloon. It faded away after Highway 17 bypassed the town in 1940. After Alma, the tracks continued to Wrights Station, and then through a two-mile tunnel to the town of Laurel.

When workers were digging the tunnel between Wrights and Laurel, they hit a seam of coal that gave off natural gas. Perhaps they tried to burn away the fumes with a torch. In any case, there was an explosion. Thirty-two men died building the tunnel, all of them Chinese except the supervisor.

Redwood lumber from Laurel helped rebuild San Francisco after the earthquake and fire of 1906. The next town was Glenwood, where travelers could visit a hot spring spa. Clems, Zayante, and Eccles came next. All were once lumber towns. All are ghost towns now. The train stopped at Scotts Valley too, and Santa Cruz, but those cities still thrive.

A Stage Stop

Before the tracks were laid, there was a stage route through the Santa Cruz Mountains. Lexington, just north of Alma, had started as a sawmill as Alma did, and grew to be about the same size. It became a stop on the route from San Jose to Santa Cruz. Stage drivers increased their teams from four horses to six at Lexington, where the mountains grew steeper. When the railroad began service in 1880, it began Lexington’s decline.

Lexington was famous in 1883 though, for a sensational murder. A Los Gatos bar owner, Lloyd Leadbetter Majors, hired Joseph Jewell and John Franklin Showers. He commissioned them to rob William Peter Renowden and Archibald McIntyre, who lived in Lexington and were said to have a huge cache of gold coins. On March 11, 1883, the thugs went to their cabin, and apparently tortured the men to make them give up their horde. The trial was a media sensation. Majors and Jewell were hanged. Showers got 15 years, but was killed by another inmate at Folsom Prison.

The ruins of Lexington are underwater now. It is near Alma but its foundations cannot even be seen at low water. By 1950, there were fewer than 50 residents in Lexington, and they moved away before the waters rose behind the dam in 1952.

Mining Camps

English Camp, Spanish Camp, and the short-lived Chinese Camp were company towns. The New Almaden Quicksilver Mining Company once ran the most productive mercury mines in the world. The remains of the mines and the places where the workers lived are now a county park set in the beautiful hills dotted with old oaks and bay trees southwest of San Jose.

The Ohlone mined cinnabar for body paint in these hills. Cinnabar is a reddish ore of mercury. Their mine was a sacred cave at the top of a mountain.

New Almaden

In 1845, Andres Castillero filed a mining claim on their land. He later shared his claim with Andrew Forbes, who started the Quicksilver Company and brought workers north to California. He named the place New Almaden, after a mining district in Spain.

Mercury turned out to be very useful. It could separate gold from ore. As the gold rush of 1849 proceeded, the Quicksilver Mines expanded. Three towns were built on the steep hills near the mines. The Cornish miners lived in Englishtown, also called English Camp. There was also a Spanish Camp, and briefly a Chinese Camp. Trails go through the area of these towns, but not much remains.

Rusting mining machinery and company buildings stand near the steep trails. The Hidalgo Cemetery is a field of wildflowers and long grasses enclosed in a white fence, with a lovely view. There are many mines, blocked off now. Most operations shut down after the gold rush, though one last company persisted until 1926. The entrance to the San Cristobal mine has been reconstructed, so that visitors can get an idea of what conditions were like when men went down in the mines.

The most remarkable sight is the old furnace where sweating workers cooked ruddy cinnabar ore into pure mercury. Its tall chimney stands on the shoulder of the hill, overlooking the New Almaden Valley, where management lived. Many visitors speak of an evil feel to the site, though it may be just that they know about the dangers of mercury.

A museum in the pretty town of New Almaden tells the story of the mines that loom above the valley. A lovely home built by the mine manager still stands among oaks and meadowland, with many airy rooms and wide porches to catch the breeze. Quaint cottages huddle together along the stream. Reservoirs gather water and provide recreation.

Mercury is now known to be highly toxic. Nothing caught from the creeks that drain the area is fit to eat. Prominent signs warn the ignorant all along the watercourse not to fish. Probably, a buried layer of mercury underlies all the streams near here, and even reaches the south end of San Francisco Bay.

Conclusion

California’s past lingers in many places, preserved in parks like New Almaden Quicksilver and Lexington County Parks. Other historic sites have to be sought out patiently, but they too hold parts of the history of California, that wait to be explored.

This post is about the hike to Vernal Falls at Yosemite only, no other Yosemite waterfalls. As opposed to the Sentinel Dome hike which we did with our entire group of 8 adults and 6 kids, I attempted ‘The Mist Trail hike’ with a friend. We had a short amount of time while the kids were enjoying rafting at the Yosemite Village with other adults.

The Mist Trail in brief

Distance and Elevation: 3 miles round trip to Vernal Falls with a 1000 ft elevation to the top of Vernal falls.

7-miles round trip to Nevada Falls with an elevation gain of 1900 ft to the top of Nevada falls.

The Valley views on this trail are stupendous! 

Best time to visit: The best time to do the Mist Trail is between April to July. Being one of Yosemite’s signature hikes, this trail does get crowded. So if you are hiking this trail in peak months, that too on a weekend, it is best to head out early around 7 am to avoid crowds.

The crowds thin out considerably after the top of Vernal Falls, if you continue to Nevada Falls.

Difficulty: Moderate. There are parts when you climb the Vernal Falls and Nevada Falls to reach to the top, which are quite steep.

Vernal Falls hike is one of the most popular trails

The Mist Trail to view Vernal Falls and Nevada Falls is one of the most popular hikes in Yosemite and for good reason. Unlike Yosemite Falls which can be viewed from Yosemite Valley, Vernal Falls can be viewed only if you take the trail. The Mist Trail hike gives you a close and personal experience of Vernal and Nevada Falls.

My friend and I decided to walk to the trailhead from the Curry Village but you can easily take a shuttle to the trailhead. The approximate 1 km walk stretched our muscles well.

I couldn’t get enough of the coniferous trees around me.

The Mist Trail is moderately challenging especially climbing the short stretches that take you to the top of the 2 falls. The good part is that unlike one wow scene on some of the other trails, the scenic views are scattered all along the Vernal Falls trail at Yosemite.

You can see the Vernal Falls at a distance from the footbridge.

From the trailhead, there is an ascending path that takes you to a bridge looking up at Vernal Falls in the distance. You could turn back from here if you are looking at a short and easy trek.

Mist Trail Hike: Climb to the top of Vernal Falls

But if you continue ahead, you will understand why the hike is named as the Mist Trail. You reach very close to Vernal Falls and the sheer magnitude of water falling down creates a cloud of mist that leaves all hikers drenched.

The cool mist from Vernal Falls is so refreshing!

Vernal Falls is just 317 feet tall but quite powerful.

On the hot day that we hiked, the mist felt lovely on our faces and arms. You could turn back from here without much regret.

This near-vertical climb up the rocky stairs takes you to the top of Vernal Falls.

But if you continue the rocky path and take the near vertical climb up, only a few do – you will reach the top of Vernal Falls and be rewarded with a fabulous view of the valley around. You could turn back from here and have seen enough to brag to friends and family.

 You can see the whole valley and the Merced River from the top.

Climb to Nevada Falls and resting spot in between

If you continue just a bit more, it is a nearly flat path, you will reach the lovely Emerald Pool. Don’t be fooled by the loveliness though. The currents are very strong, so no swimming or even wading in the water.

Emerald Pool is a good spot to relax.

The Silver Apron gets its name because of the shimmering sheet of water coursing over the granite.

At the top of the pool is water rushing over a smooth granite land, aptly named as the Silver Apron. Rest awhile and enjoy the beauty of this spot. The crowds here are less when compared to the beginning of the trek from the trailhead to Vernal Falls. You can turn back from here easily.

But if you continue ahead, you would reach the bridge that looks up at Nevada Falls. Alas, we ran out of time and had to turn back from the bridge!

We saw the Nevada Falls at a distance. We opted out of going closer to the top because of a paucity of time.

A 1.5-mile path will take you to the top of Nevada Falls where one can see stunning views of the valley and the back of Half Dome. If you go all the way to the top of Nevada Falls, you are rewarded with scenic views of the back of Half Dome and the Liberty Cap. We reached only the bridge looking at Nevada Falls.

Where To Dine in Anaheim

In addition to Disneyland and Disney’s California Adventure, Anaheim is at the cutting culinary edge offering Instagam-worthy confections at the Anaheim Packing House. 

Dining with the family on vacation can be a challenge trying to accommodate everyone’s preferences, wants and needs, however, consider managing it by allowing everyone to select a meal at a local restaurant. Trust me, this will actually be kind of fun and interesting.

Here are some popular restaurants to select from.

The Bubba Gump Shrimp Company

The Bubba Gump Shrimp Company is a favorite. Located at Anaheim Garden Walk, 321 W Katella Avenue their hours are Sunday through Thursday from 11 am until 10 pm and Friday and Saturday from 11 am until 11 pm. They have a nice kid’s menu.

Disneyland’s Blue Bayou

Disneyland’s Blue Bayou is an adult favorite. Step into New Orleans for a moment of Bayou energy and cuisine. The hours vary and after dinner, take in Nightlife In N’awlins. This has been a favorite experience since 1967.  They are located at 1313 Disneyland Drive, New Orleans Square inside of Disneyland. The menu will definitely have you feeling as though you are front row and center on Bourbon Street in New Orleans.

In n Out Burger

In n Out Burger is a must when in California. Everyone loves In n Out Burger. They are famous for having the freshest fast food long before fresh food was popular. They do not use freezers, heat lamps, or microwaves. The regular menu is awesome and the secret menu is just as dynamic. The hours vary by location. Anaheim has about multiple locations.

Pokinometry

Pokinometry is a fresh favorite.  This is for all the fish lovers who like it raw. The name Poke + Sushi is how they came up with Poki. Located at 184 S Harbor Boulevard their hours are Monday through Friday from 11:30 am until 9:00 pm and Saturday through Sunday from 11:30 am until 8:30 pm. Explore their menu to see what great creations you can imagine. 

La Palma Chicken Pie Shop

La Palma Chicken Pie Shop is one of my favorite places to dine in Anaheim. The restaurant has been family-owned and operated since 1953 and specializes in delicious chicken pot pies. They also serve a variety of other comfort food dishes including macaroni and cheese, mashed potatoes, and green beans. The atmosphere is cozy and inviting, making it the perfect spot for a casual meal with friends or family.

The Catch

The Catch is another great place to eat in Anaheim. This seafood restaurant offers an extensive menu featuring everything from fresh fish tacos to grilled steaks and lobster tails. The atmosphere is modern yet relaxed, making it a great spot for both date nights or family dinners.

Tortilla Jo’s

Tortilla Jo’s is a great Mexican restaurant located in Downtown Disney. The menu features all of your favorite Mexican dishes like fajitas, burritos, quesadillas, and enchiladas as well as specialty cocktails like margaritas and sangria. They also have live music on the weekends which makes for a fun evening out with friends or family.

Pizza Press

Pizza Press is an ideal spot for pizza lovers looking for something new and different in Anaheim. This build-your-own pizzeria allows you to customize your own pizza by choosing from a wide selection of toppings such as pepperoni, sausage, mushrooms, olives, onions, peppers, and more! You can also choose from their signature pizzas if you’re feeling overwhelmed by the options!

Angels Stadium

Angels Stadium has a very nice history as all major stadiums do. Originally known as Anaheim Stadium when they opened in 1966 the stadium underwent a $100 million dollar renovation which began in October 1996.  The end goal was to convert it back to a baseball-only stadium and make it state of the art. You must tour it to fully appreciate the history. Located at 2000 E Gene Autry Way.

Disneyland

Disneyland and California Adventure are loads of family fun as always. You get two parks in one at Disneyland. The one thing you are sure to appreciate when visiting a Disney park is the Disney Magic you experience while there.

Be sure to see the nighttime parade known as the Main Street Electrical Parade at Disneyland and the Guardian of the Galaxy – Mission Breakout at Disneyland California Adventure. Located at 1313 Disneyland Dr they are spread across 85 acres of fun.

Downtown Disney

Downtown Disney is tons of fun as well. Take in a few hours of the day and experience Disney life without all the rides but as an adult with dining, shopping, and events.

Honda Center

Honda Center is a major piece of fabric in the sports and entertainment world. This venue is known throughout the country for its state-of-the-art facility and history. Home to the Anaheim Ducks this venue does not miss a beat and hosts several dynamic events.

Whether you are looking for the perfect concert or the best of the best sporting events it will be found at the Honda Center 9 times out of 10. Located at 2695 E Katella Avenue.

Shop at the Anaheim GardenWalk

This outdoor shopping center is home to over 40 stores and restaurants, making it the perfect place to find souvenirs or grab a bite to eat. From local boutiques to popular brands like Sephora and Anthropologie, you’ll be sure to find something that catches your eye here!

From roller coasters like Xcelerator and Silver Bullet to family-friendly attractions like Camp Snoopy and GhostRider, there’s no shortage of thrills here! Those looking for more laid-back activities during their stay in Anaheim can head over to Yorba Regional Park where they can enjoy activities such as fishing or boating on one of its many lakes or simply take a leisurely stroll through its lush green spaces!

Last but not least there’s Adventure City Theme Park which offers plenty of thrills for all ages – from kiddie rides such as Tilt-A-Whirl and Bumper Cars to larger attractions like Sky Tower Ferris Wheel it has something for everyone here making it perfect if you have young kids along with you during your visit!

These are the many things to explore in Anaheim. Exploring and falling in love with Anaheim will never be a challenge. 

Get Travel Insurance

Unfortunately, there are a lot of things that can go wrong on any trip. Be prepared for the worst with travel insurance. We use Travelex or Safety Wing (often cheaper).

Book Flights

I use Skyscanner to find flights. I use it so much, I wrote an entire guide to finding cheap flights with Skyscanner! Another option for finding deals is FlightHub.

Book a Place to Stay

I recommend using Expedia.com or Hotels.com for most hotel bookings. I prefer to book directly with Marriott when I stay there because of their excellent military discount.

If you prefer staying in a vacation rental instead, I recommend VRBO. If you are looking for a hostel, I use HostelWorld.

Choose Activities and Tours

To find great activities in any area I use Viator. If we are visiting a city with lots of popular attractions I always check CityPass, PogoPass, and GoCard to see if they have discount cards available. Groupon also tends to have a lot of local travel deals.

When I want to book a full-on multi-day tour I use TourRadar. They’ve got fantastic weekly deals. If going somewhere in Mexico or the Caribbean, I use Apple Vacations.

Rent a Car or Get a Lyft

More often than not, Lyft is cheaper than Uber. Use my Lyft link for an $18 credit! For a car rental in any country, I recommend Hertz or Discover Cars.
