Planning a dreamy Belize escape? After spending a weekend at Alaia Belize in San Pedro, I’ve put together this insider guide covering the best things to do, what the resort is really like, where to eat, and how to make the most of a quick island getaway. From snorkeling Hol Chan Marine Park to lazy pool moments and exploring Ambergris Caye, this itinerary is packed with firsthand tips to help you plan the perfect trip to Alaia Belize.

Day 1: Check-In, Chill Out, and Rooftop Cocktails

Alaia Belize sits right along the coast, just 600 yards from the Belize Barrier Reef — the second largest in the world — so the water views are constant and spectacular. The resort is impressively well laid out with three pools, including Belize’s first-ever suspended rooftop pool (adults only and 360 degrees of “wow”). Down below, you’ll find two additional pools surrounded by cabanas, palm trees, and a casual island vibe.

Even though it’s a luxury property, Alaia manages to stay welcoming to families. There’s a kids’ playground, tons of open lawn space, and easy access to the calm Caribbean shallows, so little ones can splash safely while parents sip something cold. Down on the beach area, there is corn hole and giant chess.

The resort’s accommodations are equally impressive. I stayed in a one-bedroom suite that could honestly double as a beachfront condo. It came with a fully stocked kitchen (yes, a real fridge, stove, and even a blender for frozen drinks), a separate living area, and not one but three balconies — each offering its own view of paradise. Whether I was watching sunrise over the reef or sunset over San Pedro, there was always a perfect perch. They will bring a rollaway should you need one.

Inside, the design leans modern coastal: soft neutrals, woven textures, and natural woods. It’s the kind of space where you can kick off your sandals, pour a rum punch, and immediately feel at home.

Once checked in, I had a tough decision to make: which pool to hit first. Alaia has three—including Belize’s first-ever suspended rooftop pool with panoramic views of the Caribbean. (Pro tip: it’s adults-only, which means you can sip your cocktail in peace while feeling wildly sophisticated.)

After a quick boutique browse (because resort shopping is cardio), I cleaned up for dinner at Sea Salt Restaurant—the resort’s Mediterranean grill that elevates local ingredients into culinary art. Think grilled seafood, creative small plates, and a glass of wine that pairs dangerously well with Caribbean breezes. The portions are huge, so plan to split everything.

Alaia has six restaurants and four bars, so you’ll never have to eat in the same place twice (unless you want to — which you probably will).

Day 2: Secret Beach and the Truck Stop

Breakfast at The Terrace at Sea Salt

Morning started slowly, just how I like it—breakfast at my leisure at The Terrace at Sea Salt. Fresh Belizean fruit, strong coffee, and a view that made me consider buying a timeshare (don’t worry, I didn’t).

By 10 a.m., it was time for adventure. I checked in with the concierge for our excursion, grabbed my golf cart, and headed out to explore San Pedro. If you’ve never driven a golf cart through town, it’s equal parts charming and chaotic—but in the best way. JK, the drive is super intense and the roads are awful. The speed bumps are massive and many streets are cobblestone. My nerves were super on edge by the time we got to the beach.

Taking a golf cart to Secret Beach

My first stop: Secret Beach, the not-so-secret hotspot with ocean tables, clear turquoise water, and tropical drinks that make you lose track of time. There are a ton of various places you can eat, drink, and lounge. I recommend not going to the first one you come across but instead drive to the end of the row for a better experience. There were tons of people selling crap the entire time so that part sucked but otherwise a lowkey day.

Secret Beach on San Pedro Island in Belize

You could spend all day at Secret Beach, but by 3 p.m., I cruised to The Truck Stop, Belize’s first shipping container food park. It’s quirky, local, and the perfect place to grab a cold drink and snack before heading back. I absolutely didn’t want to drive after dark on those roads.

Dinner that evening was a vibe—Vista Rooftop Sushi Bar. The sunset views are unreal, and the sushi was fresh, creative, and just the right amount of indulgent. Order a cocktail (or two) and stay for the view. The cocktail menu was the most unique one I have come across in quite some time.

Day 3: Spa Bliss and Dinner Under the Stars

Breakfast in bed? Yes, please. Alaia lets you charge all your food and drinks to your room, so I fully leaned into the “treat yourself” theme.

The rest of the morning was spent at my private poolside cabana, complete with a dedicated server making sure my drink never ran dry. If you’re going to relax, this is the way to do it—between dips in the pool, pool views, and gourmet snacks on standby.

That afternoon, I headed to K’In Spa & Wellness Center for a 60-minute Swedish massage. The spa is serene, modern, and totally indulgent, offering everything from facials to local handmade skincare products. By the end, I felt like butter on a hot Belizean day—completely melted.

As if the day couldn’t get any better, Alaia capped it off with a Dine Under the Stars experience: a private four-course dinner on the sand, waves lapping nearby, and the kind of meal that makes you fall a little in love—with life, with Belize, maybe with whoever’s sitting across the table. I was with Lindsey, so not really the vibe but I could see it could be.

Day 4: A Slow Goodbye

Alaia Belize Rooftop Pool

Sunday morning came too soon. After one last lazy breakfast overlooking the water, I reluctantly packed up and headed for the super short flight back to Belize City.

It’s always hard to leave paradise, but Alaia Belize somehow manages to feel both lively and peaceful, sophisticated yet laid-back—a perfect follow-up to the quiet luxury of Cayo Espanto.

Whether you’re planning a romantic getaway or a luxe friends’ trip, Alaia is that perfect blend of Caribbean charm and resort indulgence you’ll be talking about long after you’ve gone home.

Visiting Gruene, Texas (part of New Braunfels) is the perfect weekend getaway from most major cities in Texas. Just a four-hour drive from Dallas and only an hour from Austin you will find yourself in a late 1800s German cotton community turned entertainment, dining, and shopping destination! Here in this walkable city, you will find more than 20 locally owned shops and boutiques. Now, don’t assume this is just a German town these days. Although that is the way it started, this town is Texan on every level. If you are looking for a super “Texan” experience, this town is it. Pack your boots cause you are going to wear them a lot!

Take a Gruene Weekend Fall Getaway

I recommend visiting Gruene, pronounced “green”, in the fall when the temperatures are a little cooler and they host their annual Gruene Wine and Music festival. This year, the 39th Annual Gruene Wine & Music Fest benefiting United Way of Comal County kicks off October 9 (Columbus Day Weekend) and features four days of music and wine in the quaint town of Gruene. Over 20 + Americana artists will take the stage at Gruene Hall with wine and craft beer tastings offered at The Grapevine.

Things to do in Gruene, Texas

Visit a Unique Craft Brewery
New Braunfels Brewing

New Braunfels Brewing, known for its infamous sour pickle beer, it is one of 19 Texas craft breweries that are part of the Hill Country Craft Beer Trail. Ten craft beer bars and 4 distilleries also participate in the Hill Country Craft Beer Trail that stretches from New Braunfels to Blanco and everything in between. They have giant Jenga and giant connect four. Located at 180 W Mill St #100, New Braunfels, TX 78130.

Visit a Winery
The Grapevine in Gruene Texas

The Grapevine: If you only have enough time for one winery, consider the Grapevine. It offers one of the largest selections of TX wines in the state, with selections from over 25 Texas wineries, including the special wine Llano makes just for Gruene! It’s open 7 days a week and located right in the heart of Gruene. Most of the day they have live music. So while you enjoy your wine flight, you can also enjoy some local music. Located at1612 Hunter Rd, New Braunfels, TX 78130.

Listen to Live Music
Gruene Dance Hall

It doesn’t really matter when you visit; there seems to be live music almost 24 hours a day in Gruene. But no visit would be complete without visting Texas’ Oldest Dance Hall, Gruene Hall. Not only is it historic, it’s also some of the best live music in the state of Texas and that’s saying something. We have no shortage of good live music in our state.

Float the River
Guadalupe River View

If it’s warm enough, a fun way to spend the day or even just half the day is floating the Guadalupe River. There are lots of places to float the river in this area, including many outfitters that will pick you up and bring you back to where you started.

If you’ve never floated the river, read our post: How to Float the River. This will give you all the information you need for a successful float trip.

Where to Eat in Gruene

Gristmill River Restaurant

Gristmill River Restaurant in Gruene,Texas

Located in the ruins of an old 1878 cotton gin, now celebrating 45+ years in business, serving up an array of Texas classics like ribs, chicken-fried steak, and onion rings.

Mozie’s
Mozie's Gruene

Mozie’s is a great place for lunch with good salads and sandwiches. Start with the onion ring appetizer. They are super thin but super tasty, and they go great with a spicy margarita.

Myron’s Prime Steakhouse
Myron's Prime Steakhouse

If you want a fabulous steak, Myron’s is your place! They only serve USDA Prime beef. I had a steak and my friend had fish. Both were wonderful. They have a second location in San Antonio.

Krause’s Biergarten
Krause's Biergarten

It’s hard to say what time of day I best recommend dining here. It’s much quieter at brunch on the weekends than in the evenings when there is live music. No matter when you visit, you are going to have a great meal.

Where to Stay in Gruene
Gruene Mansion Inn

I personally recommend staying at Gruene Mansion Inn. This inn was one of the first buildings in Gruene in 1872 and served as H.D. Gruene’s historic Eastlake Victorian home and cotton plantation. I stayed in one of their rooms overlooking the river.

The porch was divine. I sat out there rocking away with my guest, listening to the nearby music coming from Gruene Hall. Despite having late-night music on both sides once inside, you couldn’t hear a thing. They provided earplugs, but there wasn’t much need for them. There are also a couple of local bottles of wine in your room. Perfect for enjoying on the patio on a nice night.

They do have a small on-site eatery, the Pantry, located inside the historic inn. They serve up diverse and locally sourced charcuterie boards, fresh pastries, and cookies, as well as breakfast and lunch items. There’s no room to eat inside, but you can take it back to your room or enjoy it outside somewhere. They have plenty of random outdoor seating sprinkled throughout the property. They do offer coffee for $3 a cup, but your room also has a coffee maker with local coffee to brew.

Check current prices at the Gruene Mansion Inn.

Ah, the elusive weekend getaway. A time to escape the never-ending “Mom, I’m bored” chorus and embrace a blissful 48 hours where your biggest decision is whether to nap or sip wine (or both). But let’s be real—most of us don’t have the budget to book a luxury spa weekend at some overpriced resort that Instagram keeps trying to shove down our throats. That’s where this list comes in. I’ve rounded up some fab weekend getaways that are easy on the wallet, but heavy on the fun.

1. Asheville, North Carolina

3 day Asheville Itinerary with kids.
Photo from MommyTravels.net

For $500, you’ll get: fresh mountain air, an artsy downtown scene, and possibly a newfound love for craft beer. Asheville is known for its cool vibe and outdoorsy activities. Hike the Blue Ridge Mountains by day, and by night, treat yourself to some amazing food (hello, farm-to-table everything). With affordable boutique hotels and VRBOs aplenty, you can live your mountain life fantasy without sacrificing your kids’ college fund.

Pro Tip: If you don’t have kids or manage to escape them for a weekend, this is the perfect place to explore a few breweries. Because there’s nothing like a nice IPA after a 7-mile hike.

2. San Antonio, Texas

San Antonio with kids

A city full of culture, history, and the chance to ride a boat through the River Walk (so fancy, right?), San Antonio is a great spot for a budget-friendly getaway. You can check out the Alamo for free (history lesson: ✅), walk the River Walk, and enjoy some killer Tex-Mex for under $10. You can easily find a decent hotel deal if you book ahead, leaving you enough cash to splurge on margaritas or a visit to SeaWorld (because nothing says “vacation” like overpriced dolphin shows, right?).

Pro Tip: Try to visit during off-peak times if you’re hoping to avoid the crowds and get better pricing.

3. Joshua Tree, California

joshua tree national park

If you need to recharge your soul (and phone battery), Joshua Tree is calling your name. Channel your inner desert goddess and stay in a quirky VRBO or a budget-friendly motel (yes, they exist). Spend your days hiking and checking out rock formations that seem like they belong in another galaxy. At night, you can gaze at the stars and remind yourself that life is bigger than just chauffeuring your kids to soccer practice.

Pro Tip: Bring your own food to avoid spending too much on dining out. Plus, what’s more fun than roasting marshmallows under the desert sky?

4. New Orleans, Louisiana

New Orleans French Quarter

Yes, NOLA on a budget is possible! You can wander the French Quarter, soak in the live music (for free!), and eat beignets for every meal without breaking the bank. Hotels here can be shockingly affordable if you plan ahead, especially if you steer clear of peak party times like Mardi Gras. Spend a lazy afternoon people-watching in Jackson Square, take a ghost tour, or pop into a local dive for some Cajun food. There’s more to New Orleans than the Bourbon Street chaos—unless that’s your thing. In which case, carry on.

Pro Tip: Save money on breakfast by making a meal out of those beignets at Café du Monde. Powdered sugar has some nutritional value, right?

5. Nashville, Tennessee

Party in Nashville

If you love live music and are down to explore a city with a little Southern charm, Nashville’s your spot. Sure, it’s known for country music, but there’s something here for everyone. Stroll down Broadway and take in the street performances (for free!), or pop into a honky-tonk for some live tunes. You can find budget-friendly hotels if you look outside of the downtown area. And as for food? Hot chicken. Just trust me.

Pro Tip: Rent a scooter and zip around downtown for cheap. It’s way more fun than sitting in traffic, and you’ll look like you know what you’re doing. Probably.

6. Portland, Oregon

Portland, Oregon

Ah, the land of food trucks and hipster vibes. Portland is perfect for a quirky, budget-friendly weekend. Stay in an affordable hotel or VRBO and spend your time exploring the city’s many parks, quirky boutiques, and, of course, the famous Powell’s City of Books. Don’t forget to grab a donut from Voodoo Doughnut—it’s practically a rite of passage. Also, take a day trip to the Columbia River Gorge for waterfall hikes that will make you feel like you’re in a fairy tale.

Pro Tip: Skip the rental car and take advantage of Portland’s great public transportation. And yes, bring a reusable bag because they WILL judge you for plastic.

7. Charleston, South Carolina

charleston
Photo from Pixabay

Cobblestone streets, Southern charm, and a weekend of pretending you’re in a Nicholas Sparks novel? Yes, please. Charleston offers history, beautiful architecture, and some of the best Southern food you’ll ever eat (shrimp and grits, anyone?). Take a walking tour of the city or just wander the streets and take in the old-world beauty. Plus, the beach is just a short drive away. Stay in a cute boutique hotel or a budget Airbnb.

Pro Tip: Charleston gets humid—plan your visit in the spring or fall to avoid turning into a sweaty puddle as you tour those historic homes.

8. Denver, Colorado

Denver
Photo from Pixabay

For a weekend of fresh mountain air and outdoor adventures, Denver is an easy pick. Whether you’re hiking, biking, or sipping craft brews in a laid-back brewery, Denver has something for everyone. You can find affordable hotels in the city, and outdoor activities like hiking or strolling through Denver Botanic Gardens won’t cost you a dime. Plus, it’s the perfect city for both foodies and fitness buffs (yes, those people actually exist).

Pro Tip: Head to Red Rocks Amphitheatre for a killer hike with a view, or even catch a concert if you’re lucky. Just bring good shoes—nobody wants to be that person slipping on the stairs.

9. Gatlinburg, Tennessee

12 Best Hiking Trails in Gatlinburg, Tennessee

If you’re craving mountain views and some quality time with nature (or just a break from kids yelling over Wi-Fi issues), Gatlinburg is calling your name. Nestled right at the entrance to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, it’s perfect for a budget-friendly escape. Spend your weekend hiking gorgeous trails, like Alum Cave or the Gatlinburg Trail, or take the scenic drive through Cades Cove for free. If nature isn’t your thing, Gatlinburg’s got plenty of quirky attractions, like Ripley’s Aquarium, to keep you entertained (just don’t spend your entire $500 on fudge, moonshine, and tourist traps).

Pro Tip: You can save money by staying in a cozy cabin just outside of town or camping if you’re feeling adventurous. And if you do buy fudge, consider it an investment in your happiness.

10. Georgetown, Texas

Georgetown, Texas

If you’re looking for a charming small town that won’t break the bank, Georgetown is your spot. Located just outside of Austin, this gem offers a laid-back vibe with picturesque downtown squares and historic buildings. You can explore the Inner Space Cavern for a unique underground adventure or take a stroll around Blue Hole Park for a relaxing day by the river. Georgetown’s restaurants and wineries are surprisingly affordable, and you’ll find plenty of budget-friendly hotels like the Sheraton and VRBO options.

Pro Tip: Don’t miss the Georgetown Square, where you can browse boutiques, grab a coffee, and pretend for a moment that you’re living the quiet, simple life—before reality (aka kids) comes rushing back.

11. Chickasaw Country – Oklahoma

Yes, Oklahoma. Don’t roll your eyes just yet. Chickasaw Country is one of those why didn’t I do this sooner? destinations that delivers more than you’d expect—for way less than $500. Located just south of Oklahoma City, this area is packed with natural beauty, culture, and budget-friendly activities that won’t require you to sell a kidney. You can hike at Turner Falls (home to Oklahoma’s largest waterfall), soak in the mineral-rich waters at the Chickasaw National Recreation Area, or rent a paddleboat and pretend you’re outdoorsy. There’s also cultural experiences like the Chickasaw Cultural Center—because yes, educational travel can actually be fun (especially if it involves a stomp dance demo and fry bread).

Pro Tip: Stay at a local inn or lodge, eat like royalty at small-town diners, and still have enough money left over to bribe your kids to behave in the car on the drive home.

Final Thoughts

So, there you have it! Ten fabulous weekend getaways for $500 or less that don’t involve camping in your backyard. Because let’s be real, if I’m spending the weekend away from home, I want a real bed and no kids waking me up at 6 a.m. Just remember, budget-friendly doesn’t have to mean boring. Happy (affordable) travels!

And no, the Maldives still isn’t on this list. Maybe next time.

This year, I decided to celebrate my birthday with a weekend getaway to Wimberley, Texas, with my teenagers in tow. Because nothing says “relaxing birthday” like the chaos of traveling with teens, right? Spoiler alert: it was actually incredible. Wimberley is the perfect blend of small-town charm, outdoor adventures, and just enough quirky character to keep everyone entertained — even the hard-to-please teens.

Where We Stayed: A Hill Country Hideaway

Blair House Inn
Photos by Meagan Wristen

For my birthday weekend, I wanted something a little more refined than your average Airbnb — so we booked a stay at the Blair House Inn. This charming bed and breakfast sits on 22 acres of rolling hills. This should definitely be advertised as an adults-only vibe, this wasn’t a good place to stay with teens. I booked it because it specifically said that the rooms would accommodate three people. Once we were there you can imagine how displeased I was when they charged more than a hundred dollars for my third person. The rooms are cozy and beautifully decorated, with plush beds and stunning views of the Hill Country.

breakfast at Blair House Inn Wimberley

The best part? Leaving. Just kidding, kind of it was the breakfast. Granted, it was the slowest service ever, so we were truly starving by the time food arrived and anything would have tasted good.

Pro Tip: Book early if you’re planning a summer trip — Wimberley rentals fill up fast, especially the ones with pools and hot tubs. And trust me, you’ll want that hot tub after a day of hiking and shopping. Also, don’t stay here, go somewhere else.

Day 1: Swimming Holes and Birthday Dinner Perfection

We kicked off the weekend at Blue Hole Regional Park, which has to be one of the most gorgeous swimming holes in Texas. Picture crystal-clear water shaded by ancient cypress trees — it’s basically a natural lazy river. The kids jumped off the rope swings (multiple times) while I floated nearby.

👉 Pro Tip: You must make reservations for Blue Hole during the summer, or you’ll be stuck on the sidelines watching other people have fun.

Afterwards, we strolled through downtown Wimberley, which is full of artsy shops and quirky boutiques. My teens even humored me by browsing a few stores before demanding snacks (because, of course).

Birthday dinner at Creekhouse Kitchen & Bar

For my birthday dinner, we headed to Creekhouse Kitchen & Bar — and wow, it was exactly what I needed. This spot sits right on Cypress Creek, so we got to enjoy dinner with a view of the water and twinkling string lights.

I kicked things off with a watermelon margarita (because birthday rules), and we started with the fried green tomatoes and chips and queaso — both were phenomenal. I had tacos, and the teens went all in on the fried chicken sandwiches and fries. Everything was fresh, flavorful, and cooked perfectly.

Dessert? Oh yes. The chocolate lava cake was exactly what a birthday dessert should be — rich, gooey, and served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Zero regrets and it was complimentary.

Day 2: Ziplining, Lavender Fields, and Pie

Wimberley Zipline

We started the day with an adrenaline rush at Wimberley Zipline Adventures. Nothing wakes you up faster than flying over the Hill Country at 30 mph. The kids loved it — and honestly, so did I. There’s something about the combination of speed, height, and breathtaking views that makes you forget you’re supposed to be a responsible adult.

Next stop: Rough Creek Lavender Fields. Lavender fields might not scream “teen activity,” but they were surprisingly into it. Maybe it was the calming smell, or maybe it was the fact that they got to take some cute photos for Instagram. Either way, it was a win. We picked up some lavender honey and lotion before heading off to lunch.

Lunch was at The Wimberley Cafe — a small-town gem where the coffee is strong, the pie is homemade, and the staff treats you like family. We split a slice of pecan pie and a slice of chocolate cream pie because birthdays require tough decisions.

Day 3: Market Days and One Last Dip

Sunday morning, we hit up Wimberley Market Days — the largest outdoor market in Texas. There are over 400 vendors selling everything from handmade jewelry to vintage cowboy boots. My teens got a little lost in the maze of booths, but they eventually reappeared with some cool finds (and a serious dent in my wallet).

Jacob's Well
Photos by Meagan Wristen

Before heading home, we squeezed in one last stop at Jacob’s Well — another famous swimming hole. The water is freezing which is nice when it’s 100 degrees outside! (Sadly, it was completely closed when I was there. Although some local kids didn’t care and were having a lot of fun.)

Final Thoughts: Wimberley is a Birthday Win

Wimberley turned out to be the perfect place to celebrate a birthday with teens. It’s small enough to be walkable but packed with enough charm, adventure, and delicious food to keep everyone happy. Plus, you get that gorgeous Hill Country backdrop, which makes even the most chaotic family moments feel a little more magical.

So, if you’re looking for a low-key but unforgettable birthday getaway — with or without teens — Wimberley is calling. Just don’t forget to make those swimming hole reservations and leave room for pie.

I just got back from another incredible weekend in New York City with my daughter Eden who is a college student, and let me tell you — we packed a LOT into a couple of days. From Broadway to Brooklyn, museums to thrift stores, and some seriously good food along the way, here’s the full scoop (plus tips) if you’re planning your own NYC getaway with a college student.

Where We Stayed: The Concorde Hotel New York — A Hidden Gem

Concorde-Hotel-New-York-City-1024x1024
Photos by Meagan Wristen

We stayed at the Concorde Hotel New York and honestly, I think I’ve found my new go-to NYC hotel. It’s super boutiquey — only 44 rooms — which means it’s blissfully quiet (a rare find in Manhattan).

The location is perfect: it’s close to three subway stops, so getting around was a breeze. It’s also walkable to Fifth Avenue and Times Square — you know, for those moments when you feel like joining the tourist chaos.

But the real perks?
✅ 24-hour coffee and hot chocolate bar on one floor.
✅ A Nespresso machine in the room (yes, please).
✅ Both a bathtub AND a walk-in shower — because why settle for one when you can have both?
✅ Did I mention how quiet it was? I could actually sleep through the night — in New York City. Miracles do happen.

We had brunch at the hotel’s on-site restaurant, Bonsai, which was fabulous. Highly recommend the tapas-inspired dishes — it’s an elegant but low-key vibe.

Broadway Magic: &Juliet and Moulin Rouge

Moulin Rouge

No NYC trip is complete without Broadway, and we saw two incredible shows:

🎭 &Juliet — Joey Fatone (yes, that Joey Fatone from NSYNC) was in it, and he was surprisingly hilarious. The whole show is a fun, modern twist on Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet, set to pop music. It’s exactly as ridiculous and fabulous as it sounds.

🎭 Moulin Rouge — If you haven’t seen it yet, RUN. It’s over-the-top in the best way possible — glitter, feathers, and some serious vocal talent. One thing that surprised me was the music. I thought the show would have a lot more french music. Instead it’s current popular music.

Museum Hopping: The Morgan Library, MoMA, and the Guggenheim

The Morgan Library

We spent some time pretending to be cultured and hit up some of NYC’s best museums:

🖼️ The Morgan Library – Think of it as the ultimate personal library (if your personal library happens to look like something straight out of Beauty and the Beast). It’s absolutely stunning and feels super intimate. No one family should be allowed to have some of the things we saw. They have not one but three Gutenberg Bibles printed by Johannes Gutenberg in 1455.

🖼️ MoMA – Modern art at its finest. Pro tip: they offer a student discount — Eden was thrilled about that one. (Most museums in the city offer a student discount.) I’m not super into modern art but was pleasantly surprised how many Picasos they had.

MOMA NYC

🖼️ Guggenheim – The building alone is a work of art. We wandered through the spiral, taking in modern masterpieces. Definitely worth the visit.

Sky-High Adventure at The Edge

The Edge NYC

If you want views that’ll make your stomach drop (literally), head to The Edge. It’s a triangular platform that juts out over the city, with glass floors that let you see all the way down. You know, if you’re brave enough to step on them (I was not).

But the view? Insane. You get a full panoramic shot of the city, the river, and beyond. We even played curling while we were there had cocktails and chicken and waffles. Because why not? Book tickets in advance.

Brooklyn Adventures: Bridges, Thrift Shops, and Yemeni Coffee

Brooklyn Bridge

We ventured over to Brooklyn because Eden, being the journalist that she is, wanted to get some epic city shots. She had heard that she could get great photos here.

📸 Brooklyn Bridge Park – Hands down, some of the best city views I’ve ever seen. You can walk right under the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges, which makes for some killer photos.

👉 Pro tip: Take the subway to Brooklyn — it’s faster and cheaper than an Uber.

After freezing our faces off near the water, we popped into a massive food hall to warm up and grab coffee. You can find pretty much anything there, from dumplings to tacos.

thrifting in Brooklyn

Next stop: Williamsburg — which honestly reminds me of Portland, Oregon, with all its independent shops and cool coffee spots. We hit up a couple of thrift shops because apparently, it’s all about vintage right now:

🛍️ Monk Thrift Shop – Huge and multi-level, with tons of options.
🛍️ L Train Vintage – Also fantastic, and with multiple locations if you can’t make it to Williamsburg.

And because we needed more caffeine, we tried Qawah Yemeni Coffee Shop — which was an experience. They brew the coffee over a stove in these little pots, add cardamom and spices, and you can order by the pot size. We got a medium, which was a mistake because I was vibrating by 4 p.m.

Where We Ate (and Loved)

🍳 Bonsai – Brunch at Concorde’s on-site restaurant was fantastic. You can’t beat convenience and good coffee. I have the avocado toast and Eden at hash brown sandwich.

🍳 The Horny Ram – Such a cute, cozy brunch spot with great food. Definitely felt like a neighborhood place. Eden had the buffalo chicken nachoes with eggs and I had the huevos rancheros. They were both equally good and perfect for sharing.

🍕 Rosemary’s – We stopped in for an early dinner and it was adorable. We shared a pasta and a pizza — both were fantastic. The vibe was casual but chic — exactly what you want after a day of walking around the city.

🥙 Au Zatar – If you like Mediterranean food, this place is a must. Their shawarma is perfect for feeding 4 – 5. It comes out on a big skewer on top of a bed of french fries, and they carve it for you. Whatever yet get because sure to get the hummus it is next level.

Final Thoughts

This was one of those rare trips where everything just clicked — from the shows to the views to the food. If you’re heading to NYC, definitely check out the Concorde Hotel — it’s the perfect mix of quiet and convenience. And don’t sleep on Brooklyn for photos or vintage shopping — even if it means accepting that your kids now dress like extras from a ‘90s music video.

Embarking on a mother-daughter weekend getaway to New York City is like diving headfirst into a glittering treasure chest of experiences—only to find that the real gem is the bond you’re polishing along the way. From the dizzying heights of the Empire State Building to the cozy corners of a West Village cafe, the city becomes not just a backdrop but a catalyst for laughter, stories, and perhaps the occasional eye-roll. It’s a chance to trade the familiar hum of daily routines for the electric buzz of Broadway, bagels, and unexpected adventures with your favorite person. So, pack your most comfortable shoes (and your patience) because this journey through the Big Apple is about to add some unforgettable layers to the mother-daughter saga.

Day 1: Reflections, Laughs, and Sky-High Views

The first day will depend on what time you’ve arrived. The earlier the better so you can max out your day.

Late Brunch at Delmonico’sDelmonico's for brunch

A late brunch at Delmonico’s is a delightful affair. The place exudes old-world charm, and their Eggs Benedict could probably win awards. It’s the kind of meal that makes you forget you’re on a tight sightseeing schedule. Get dressed up and splurge on a memorable meal. Located at 56 Beaver St.

After breakfast, head over to the nearby 9/11 area. It’s an easy walk, you will not need to catch a cab.

9/11 Memorial Museum and Pools9/11 Memorial and Museum

Vsit to the 9/11 Memorial Museum and Pools. This place isn’t just a tribute to the past; it’s a lesson in resilience. We were reminded of the strength and unity that emerged from one of America’s darkest hours. It’s a moving experience that leaves you with a lot to ponder. I recommend purchasing a NYC CityPass which gets you in here and to four other attractions.

Early Dinner: Old Tbilisi Garden Old Tbilisi Garden

For dinner, we ventured into the culinary wonders of Old Tbilisi Garden. A perk of being in NYC is how many different types of food are available. So each time we are in the city we try something new. This time it was Georgian cuisine. One of Eden’s friends had recently been to NYC and highly recommended eating here. I cannot remember the names of everything we got but that cheese thing pictured here was outstanding. It was so heavy and filling we could have split just that!

Evening: Radio City Music Hall & Top of the RockViews from the Top of the Rock

We amped-up the energy with a comedy show at Radio City Music Hall. There’s nothing like laughter to balance a day of deep reflection. The comedians were so relatable. Granted we got lucky because it was the opening night of Ronny Chieng’s new tour and John Oliver opened for him. If you are not into the comedy show idea then catch a Broadway show.

Post-comedy, we strolled across the street to the Top of the Rock Observation Deck. The nighttime view of NYC from here is nothing short of magical. The city lights stretched out like a glittering carpet, making for some spectacular photo ops and reminding me that, yes, I should have brought a better camera. (Top of the Rock is included in a CityPass.)

image 100774867 12148425

After the show treat: Hot Chocolate at Juniors Indulging in what might be the city’s richest hot chocolate. It’s the kind of drink that requires a spoon and possibly a nap afterward.

Day 2: Culture, Cuisine, and Cool Skates

Breakfast at Citizens Of ChelseaCitizens Of Chelsea

Morning: Chelsea & The Highline

Have breakfast in Chelsea at Citizen Chelsea. Afterwards. head just one street over and walk the Highline. This elevated park is an urban oasis, offering unique views of the city and a peaceful respite from the bustling streets below.

NYC Highline

Our plan was to take the Highline over to a newer attraction, Edge, to see the incredible views but it was so cloudy we wouldn’t have seen anything. If it’s a nice day this is the perfect stop. Purchase Edge tickets here. We did at least get to see the newer expansion of the Highline which was quite nice.

Lunch: Pizza at BarDoughPizza at BarDough

There’s great pizza everywhere and it’s affordable. We ended up popping into a place called BarDough in Hell’s Kitchen and couldn’t believe how good it was. Located at 350 West 46th Street.

Don’t over eat during lunch because you need to save plenty of room for the food tour later.

After Lunch: Central Park or Bryant

Our afternoon was a mix of nature and ice. A stroll through Central Park in the crisp air was refreshing, while ice skating at Bryant Park was a hilarious test of our balance and grace – or lack thereof. If you are here in the summer you can go roller skating at Rockefeller Center instead if you like.

Late Afternoon: Hell’s Kitchen Dessert Tour & DinnerHell's Kitchen Food Tour

The Hell’s Kitchen Dessert Tour was a sweet lover’s paradise, guiding us through some of the neighborhood’s best confectioneries. You can take some of it to-go so you don’t eat so much during the tour.

Dinner: MAMA MIA 44swMAMA MIA 44sw

If you are not too stuffed from the dessert tour and still have room for a real dinner head to Mama Mia 44sw for an incredible Italian meal at a family-owned restaurant that started way back in 1971.

Day 3: Eclectic Eats and Final Fancies

Morning to Afternoon: Eclectic Eateries and Spa Time

We spent our last day grazing through various eclectic eateries of NYC, sampling everything from street food to upscale cuisine. We also squeezed in some last-minute souvenir shopping, because nothing says “I’ve been to New York” like a bag full of kitschy memorabilia.

Breakfast: Mom’s Kitchen and Bar

Mom's Kitchen and Bar in NYC

Mom’s Kitchen and Bar has a small but interesting menu. They offer brunch all day, so if you stayed out too late the night before don’t despair, you can still get breakfast no matter what day of the week it is! We opted for the chicken and waffles, the pancake burrito made with scrambled eggs, sausage, cheddar, bacon, pancake wrap, and maple syrup, and the avocado toast so we could feel like we made a healthy choice. Mom’s Kitchen and Bar is located in Hell’s Kitchen at located at 701 9th Ave, New York, NY 10019.

Mid-Morning: GuggenheimGuggenheim Museum

The Guggenheim Museum was next, where the building is as much a work of art as the collections it houses. We spiraled our way through modern masterpieces, occasionally tilting our heads, trying to look like we understood the abstract art. Guggenheim is included in the CityPass.

Lunch: Tacos at Rosies

Taco board at Rosie's NYCRosie’s

If you love tacos you will love Rosie’s. It’s the perfect stop as you head to the lower part of the city to eventually catch the ferry. Located at 29 E 2nd St.

Afternoon: Jacuzzi Time at QC NY Spa

QC NY Spa

Just a short ferry ride away to Governors Island you will get to indulge in a spa paradise! QC has a bunch of hot tubs including ones that overlook the city! If their admission is a bit to steep or you just don’t want to leave the city check out these alternatives: 6 Best Spas in NYC.

If hitting a spa isn’t your thing you could pop over to Brooklyn. The Williamsburg area is fab!

Dinner: CarlottoClassic Italian at Carlotto in NYC

Italian at Carlotto because you must have Italian food while in the city. It’s a fairly small spot so be sure to make a reservation in advance. They have Happy Hour Tuesday through Saturday from 5 pm – 6 pm so try to get there in time to be seated at 5:30 if you are on a budget. Located in Union Square at 100 E 19th St, New York, NY 10003.

Tips for Travelers:

  1. Footwear: Comfort over style. Your feet will thank you after miles of urban exploration.
  2. Stay Flexible: NYC is full of surprises. Be open to spontaneous detours.
  3. MetroCard: Your key to the city. Much cheaper than cabs and often faster.
  4. Stay Hydrated: With all the walking and excitement, don’t forget to drink water!

Conclusion

From the reflective pools of the 9/11 Memorial to the dizzying heights of Top of the Rock, and from the hearty laughs at Radio City to the whimsical twirls on the ice, this trip was a whirlwind of emotions and experiences. NYC, you’re a city of contrasts, and you’ve stolen a piece of our hearts (and possibly our soles, considering how much we walked). Can’t wait to come back, but maybe after a week-long foot massage session.

Our family recently took a weekend getaway to Tampa Bay, Florida from Dallas, Texas after Spirit Airlines added a direct route there. Traveling with my 19-year-old daughter and lively 16-year-old son, we ended up having a memorable escapade that combined relaxation, adventure, and culinary delights.

Day 1: Arrival and Exploration

Morning: Check-in at Marriott Water StreetMarriott Water Street Tampa Bay

Our adventure began at the Marriott Water Street, a prime choice for families with teenagers. The sleek design and vibrant atmosphere of the hotel instantly captivated us. The highlight for the teens was undoubtedly the rooftop pool, a perfect hangout spot, complete with games and a stunning view of the city. It’s a little oasis where they could chill and socialize. Check current rates on Marriott and here’s a little video I made of the hotel.

Lunch: Sparkman WharfSparkman Wharf Tamp Bay

My kids were starving of course, because teens are always starving from what I can tell. For lunch, we headed to Sparkman Wharf. This bustling outdoor food hall offers a variety of cuisines that cater to all tastes, making it a hit with the teens.Lunch at Splitsville

When we happened to go it was raining badly and many eateries were closed, so we decided to eat inside at Splitsville. We feasted on everything from artisanal pizza, salads, to Asian fusion Afterwards we spent some time bowling. They offer regular bowling, feather bowling, ping pong, billiards, foosball, darts, and shuffleboard. It’s the perfect spot for rainy day activities!Splitsville Tampa Bay

After bowling, we decided to grab a treat at the Hampton Chocolate Factory where they make insanely good ice cream concoctions. They are huge, so two people could easily split one. Ask for a little tray that way when you do not eat it fast enough it’s not dripping all over and instead it’s dripping in a tray. How do I know this? Well, I won’t say who, but one of us made a huge mess! (cough, eden, cough)

Hampton Chocolate Factory

Lucky for use, the weather cleared up and that meant we could puch forward doing some fun activities.

Afternoon: Tampa Riverwalk and the Attraction PassFlorida Aquarium

Post-lunch, we went to check out a couple of attractions. The Riverwalk Attraction Pass is a must-have, granting access to multiple attractions. We visited the Florida Aquarium and the American Victory Ship & Museum, both offering engaging experiences that even my screen-obsessed teens found captivating. I had hoped to make it over to Tampa Bay History Center but we ran out of time.

American Victory Ship & Museum

After a few activities and despite eating a massive lunch and massive ice cream, once again they were starving. so off to dinner we went.

Dinner: Anchor and Brine at the Marriott Water StreetAnchor and Brine at the Marriott Water Street

Tonight go easy on yourself and enjoy dinner at Anchor and Brine inside your hotel. They’ve got an extensive seafood menu as well as some great non-seafood options too. I don’t eat seafood and I loved their steak option. The views are great and on a nice evening, it’s delightful to sit out on the large patio.

Day 2: Adrenaline and Leisure

Breakfast: Oxford ExchangeOxford Exchange

We started our day at Oxford Exchange. The trendy, book-lined café with its artisan coffee and wholesome breakfast options was a great hit. The teens loved the Instagram-worthy décor and atmosphere.

Daytime: Busch GardensBusch Gardens safari

The highlight of our trip was Busch Gardens, an African-themed amusement park known for its thrilling roller coasters, exotic animal encounters, and entertaining shows. The teens were ecstatic, diving into the adrenaline-pumping rides while I enjoyed the serene wildlife exhibits.

Here are ten electrifying highlights that are sure to make any teen’s visit unforgettable:

  1. SheiKra: Dive into excitement on SheiKra, North America’s first dive coaster, offering a 200-foot drop straight down at a 90-degree angle. It’s a heart-pounding experience that provides an adrenaline rush like no other.
  2. Cheetah Hunt: Feel the speed on Cheetah Hunt, a triple-launch coaster that mimics the agile predator’s high-speed chases. It’s a fast-paced thrill ride that zips and zooms through the park, making it a must-ride for speed demons. No joke, this thing is so fast. You’ve been warned!
  3. Falcon’s Fury: Experience the thrill of free fall on Falcon’s Fury, North America’s tallest freestanding drop tower. Brace yourself for a 335-foot plunge that will have your heart racing and your spirit soaring. (I refused to ride this.)
  4. Serengeti Safari: Take a break from the thrills and embark on a Serengeti Safari. This open-air touring vehicle takes you up close to African wildlife, where you can hand-feed giraffes and observe fascinating animals in their naturalistic habitats. (This particular experience does cost extra. I felt like it was 100% worth it.)
  5. Montu: Test your courage on Montu, one of the tallest and longest inverted roller coasters in the world. With seven inversions, high speeds, and intense G-forces, it’s a whirlwind adventure that thrill-seekers won’t want to miss.
  6. Kumba: Hear the roar of Kumba, a coaster that features one of the world’s largest vertical loops. The ride’s intense spirals, drops, and turns will leave you breathless and exhilarated.
  7. Tigris: Brace yourself for Tigris, Florida’s tallest launch coaster, offering a thrilling experience with forward and backward launches, dramatic twists, and an inverted heartline roll at over 60 miles per hour.
  8. Cobra’s Curse: Take on Cobra’s Curse, a unique spin coaster that puts you face-to-fang with an 80-foot snake icon, then sends you spinning through twists and turns. It’s an innovative ride that combines storytelling with thrilling action. Busch Gardens Tampa Bay

Lunch: Inside Busch Gardens

For lunch, we took advantage of the various eateries inside Busch Gardens. With options ranging from quick snacks to sit-down meals, there was something to satisfy everyone’s appetite amidst the excitement of the park. If you are still not done in the park by dinner time, just have dinner there.

Dinner: Columbia Restaurant

In the evening, we ventured to the historic Columbia Restaurant in Ybor City. The Spanish and Cuban cuisines, along with the flamenco dance performance, offered a culturally rich dining experience. The teens were captivated by the vibrant history and lively atmosphere.

Day3: Become a Chocolatier & Dance the Night Away

Breakfast: The BruncheryThe Brunchery

The Brunchery is a local favorite known for its cozy ambiance and classic breakfast offerings. Their pancakes, in particular, were a hit with the teenagers.

Mid-morning: Chocolate Making!Peterbrooke Chocolatier Tampa Bay

My kids LOVED making their own chocolate and so did I. Not only did we learn a ton but we all went home with our own giant candy bar creations. I highly recommend this as an activity for tweens or teens. The owner is super nice too! Oh, and the have ice cream.

Lunch: Bavaro’s PizzaBavaro's Pizza

I’ve thought a lot about what I am about to type. And after thinking about this for months I am ready to say that Bavaro’s Pizza is the best pizza I have ever had. Considering the ages of my kids you can only imagine how much pizza we have eaten in the last 17 – 23 years! I had the pizza with buratta and it slapped as did that meatball appetizer. Jonah and his friend got a more basic pizza which they anihilated so I am assuming it was quite good as well.

Dinner: Yacht Starship Dinner CruiseYacht Starship Dinner Cruise

Cruise around Tampa Bay on the. they serve a nice dinner and when you are done you can head up top for some dancing. There’s a DJ up there spinning some great tunes.

Day 4: Relaxation and Departure

Breakfast: Café WatersideCafé Waterside

Our final day began with breakfast at the hotel at Cafe Waterside. You can order a la carte or they have a breakfast buffet. I got the Cuban benedict as seen above.

Morning: Marriott Water StreetThe pool area at Marriott Water Street Tampa Bay

After breakfast, we spent the morning relaxing at the Marriott’s rooftop pool. This provided the teens with a final chance to enjoy the games and the Florida sun before our departure. The rooftop area is so great that you definitely want to make time to spend up here. I wish we could have had a bit more pool time but we got busy doing so much other stuff.

Lunch: Armature WorksArmature Works

We grabbed lunch at Armature Works. This modern food hall offered a diverse range of culinary options, from gourmet sandwiches to Asian delicacies, perfectly adding to our culinary adventures in Tampa. Everyone can order what they want and then meet back up. The outside area is nice too, so it would be a good place to sit if it’s not too hot. Plus, it’s a super cool-looking place.

Afternoon: Shopping and Ice CreamHyde Park Village

Head over to the super cute shopping area called Hye Park Village. They’ve got lots of adorable shops here including the largest Francescas I’ve ever been in. Some of the shops were $$$$. We went to the restrooms here and we discovered that red telephone booth which is a book swap.

Oddfellows Ice Cream Shop

There is a tasty ice cream shop here, Oddfellows. They have some interesting flavors like wasabi infused ice cream with chocolate chunks or sweet cream ices cream with swirls of coffee caramel and chocolate cookie dirt.

Ulele

If you have time for dinner before you fly out head to Ulele, a native-inspired restaurant and brewery. The unique menu, featuring items like alligator hush puppies, was adventurous yet appealing to the teens. The rustic, yet chic ambiance added to the experience.

Conclusion

Our weekend in Tampa Bay, with its perfect mix of thrills, culture, and relaxation, was a hit with the teenagers. From the exhilarating rides at Busch Gardens to the diverse culinary delights, every moment was filled with something new and exciting. As we boarded our flight home, discussions of our next adventure were already in the air, a testament to the unforgettable experiences we shared in Tampa Bay.
