Find out everything you will need to float the river with kids, plus a list of fun rivers to float across the United States.

How to Float a River with Kids

How to float the river with kids

One of our favorite outdoor activities to do as a family is float the river. It’s relaxing and fun. We typically float for half a day so somewhere between 3 – 5 hours. If you’ve never floated a river, it can be a little intimidating even though there’s no skill needed. There are a few designated areas that I call out below where you can float.

There are some things you need to know before you float. For example, what to wear and how to chill your drinks.  Use your judgment and make sure conditions are safe before heading out.

What to wear while floating the river:

  • Clothes and shoes that can get wet like your swimsuit
  • Shoes that stay on your feet, like river sandals, aqua socks, or even tennis shoes you don’t mind getting wet. Do not wear flip flops.
  • Sunglasses
  • If you wear glasses, straps to keep them secure are a good idea.
  • Hat
  • Wearable Drybag

Other Items to Bring

  • Raft or tubes: In Texas, tubes are ideal, because it’s so hot and the water is warm. In Oregon and Idaho, rafts are better because the water is so cold.
  • Life jackets: Laws vary by state, but everyone should always have a life jacket. Never take a child into a river without a life jacket.
  • Paddles: You may not need them, but on the off chance you do, you will be happy to have them with you.
  • Sunscreen
  • Snacks: Pack snacks with minimal packaging.
  • Non-alcoholic beverages
  • Water: It’s important that everyone stays well hydrated while out in the sun.
  • Mesh laundry bag: I use a mesh laundry bag and fill it with drinks and tie it to our raft. Typically the water is so cold it will keep the drinks super cold.
  • Waterproof camera: Nowadays there are lots of waterproof cameras on the market.
  • Air Pump: You will want to quickly fill up your tubes and rafts.

What else to bring, but leave in the car until the end:

  • A change of dry clothes
  • Towel

What Not to Bring

  • Glass bottles or containers
  • Styrofoam coolers or cups

Where to Float a River with Kids

How to Float the river with kids

Florida:

Fort White offers the most popular place to float in Florida at Ichetcucknee Springs State Park and is open May – September.

  • Visitors bringing tubes into the park:  Enter park at the north park entrance located at 8294 SW Elim Church Road.
  • Drivers will leave tubes and passengers at the tube drop off location in the upper parking lot area.
  • Drivers will proceed to the South main entrance parking area located at 12087 SW U.S. Highway 27.
  • Drivers will purchase a shuttle bracelet for transportation to North main entrance tube drop off from the general store. (The driver can also purchase tram bracelets for everyone in their party)
  • Visitors renting tubes from within the park will need to enter the park at South main entrance instead, located at 12087 SW U.S. Highway 27.

Between Jacksonville and Tallahassee is Madison Blue Spring State Park, where you can float on weekends from May to September.

In Apopka, you can float Rock Springs Run in Kelly Park. Bring your own, or rent tubes for $5 – $7 from private outfitters located just outside the park. The float trip is short, it only takes about 25 minutes.  When you are done, it is a 5-minute walk on a paved sidewalk back to the start. The deepest part is about 5 feet and is much shallower in many places.

In High Springs you can do a short float down the Santa Fe River at Ginnie Springs. Put in at Devil’s Spring and float for an hour. You will exit at Twin Spring and walk back to where you parked. It takes around 15 minutes to walk back on the tubing trail. There are free air stations located in the park.

In Holt, in the Florida panhandle is Blackwater River State Park. Blackwater River offers a four-mile stretch of water that will take you 3-5 hours to float.

Spring Creek in Marianna near Tallahassee offers a four-hour tubing experience.  Start at Merrit’s Mill Pond where Spring Creek opens up to the Chipola River.

Georgia:

Near Atlanta, in Roswell, you can float the Chattahoochee River. You will only want to float here if it is over 80 degrees outside because the water is cold.

In Blue Ridge, the Toccoa River offers smooth rides through the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Idaho:

In Boise, you can float the Boise River.  (Some people even surf it, but we just float!) You can park your car at Ann Morrison Park and catch a bus. For a few dollars, the bus will take you up the river and drop you off at Barber Park. Last time we paid $2 per adult and they didn’t charge me for the kids. At the drop off point, there’s air available and you can inflate your raft or tube. You can also rent a raft or tube where they drop you off. I recommend using a raft because this river is extremely cold. It takes about two hours to float back down to the park. There are two small drops so you will have to hang on to your kids a few times.

Oklahoma:

Float the Washita River

In Oklahoma, in Chickasaw Country, you can float the Washita River. Washita River Floats will take you up the river and drop you off for a 4 mile float. It will take between 2.5 – 4 hours depending on how the river is moving.

Oregon:

There are several rivers that you can float in Oregon, but we tend to stick to the same one. We float the Sandy River near Troutdale, Oregon. Start at Dabny State Park and pull out at Lewis and Clark state park. You do have to pay to leave your car in both of the parks. The last time we went it was $5 and they took credit cards.

Texas:

Schlitterbahn

For the most part, there are shuttles available along popular Texas rivers. In Texas, the only legal access points are where bridges cross a navigable river. Keep this in mind if you’re doing it yourself and not using a shuttle service. The tube rental/shuttle companies are fairly cheap and make the whole thing super easy.

In San Antonio, you can float the Comal or Guadalupe River. Near San Antonio in Bandera is also the Medina River that can be floated

In San Marcos, you can float the San Marcos River.

In Austin, you can float the Barton Creek Greenbelt. There are no shuttles or tube rental outfits here.

In the Dallas/Fort Worth area, you can float the Trinity River.

Best Places to go Tubing in Texas

Virginia:

Most people float the South Fork of the Shenandoah River in Shenandoah Valley. Virginia has a no drinking in public law, so leave the booze at home.

Washington:

Yakima River Canyon is a popular place to float near Yakima, Washington. – Start at Umtanum for a three-hour float to Roza. Leave one car at Roza, this is where you will pull out of the river. It will likely cost $5 per car to park.

Get Travel Insurance

Unfortunately, there are a lot of things that can go wrong on any trip. Be prepared for the worst with travel insurance. We use Travelex or Safety Wing (often cheaper).

Book Flights

I use Skyscanner to find flights. I use it so much, I wrote an entire guide to finding cheap flights with Skyscanner! Another option for finding deals is FlightHub.

Book a Place to Stay

I recommend using Expedia.com or Hotels.com for most hotel bookings. I prefer to book directly with Marriott when I stay there because of their excellent military discount.

If you prefer staying in a vacation rental instead, I recommend VRBO. If you are looking for a hostel, I use HostelWorld.

Choose Activities and Tours

To find great activities in any area I use Viator. If we are visiting a city with lots of popular attractions I always check CityPass, PogoPass, and GoCard to see if they have discount cards available. Groupon also tends to have a lot of local travel deals.

When I want to book a full-on multi-day tour I use TourRadar. They’ve got fantastic weekly deals. If going somewhere in Mexico or the Caribbean, I use Apple Vacations.

Rent a Car or Get a Lyft

More often than not, Lyft is cheaper than Uber. Use my Lyft link for an $18 credit! For a car rental in any country, I recommend Hertz or Discover Cars.

Save Money on Gas

Upside a free app gets you cash back on gas! Use promo code RV2Q2 to get an extra 15¢/gal bonus on your first purchase.

Get a Visa

I use iVisa to get all of my Visas.

Wishing your kids were more active? Ge them moving with these outdoor activities for teens and tweens!

For many people, it’s difficult to spend so much time indoors, and to be honest it isn’t healthy. It’s important to spend time outside for many reasons. Being outside reduces stress and anxiety while increasing Vitamin D at the same time. Spending time outside improves sleep and boosts immunity. It can even lower your blood pressure and help improve your physical and mental health!

1. Paddleboarding

Paddle boarding in Oahu

Spending a couple of hours paddleboarding is the perfect social distancing activity. It’s easy enough that anyone can do and even if you paddleboard with friends you will be well spaced out. You can get exercise and have fun at the same time.

You can rent a paddleboard in many locations where there is water. Otherwise, you can buy one, but they can be a little pricey. When picking out a paddleboard keep in mind the wider it is, the easier it is to use. Inflatable paddleboards are a little cheaper and easier to store and transfer.

2. Hiking

Oneonta Gorge hike

Find a lesser-known trail and head out for a family hike. Even popular trails likely have plenty of room for people to spread out easily. If you happen to be in Oregon near the Scenic Columbia Gorge area, I have a ton of hikes I recommend. We lived in that area for many years and the hiking was outstanding. 14 Best Hikes for Kids in the Columbia River Gorge

3. Kayaking

Kayaking in Sunriver, Oregon near Bend, Oregon

Another great water activity that makes is super easy to social distance. If you are in an area with lots of water there’s probably going to be, places to rent kayaks. Oddly, enough I’ve seen kayaks for sale at Marshall’s before, for fairly decent prices.

If you are kayaking with kids, I recommend not using the ones you sit down into or an inflatable one. You want the kind with an open top that can seat two people. These are fairly large, but in the long run, it’s the better option.

4. Canoe

Kayaking at Pac Chen

Depending on how many people are participating in your water activities and what the water is like, canoeing might be a better option. Especially, if you are renting gear. Instead of having to rent two kayaks, you might be able to save a few bucks by renting just one canoe. Canoes are great for lakes and wide slow rivers.

5. Golf

Silvies Valley Ranch Golf course review

Golf was probably the one sport most set up for social distancing. I live on a golf course and we watch people come by off and on all day. We do not golf but from what I have observed it’s an ideal way to spend a day or evening.

If you do not know how to golf, head to the driving range or Top Golf instead. This is what we do since we are not golfers. At the driving range, you can hit golf a bucket of balls for super cheap and there’s no pressure. Over at Top Golf, you play fun games and they’ve got food.

6. Camping

Taking the family on a family camping trip is a great way to take a vacation and social distance at the same time. If you’ve never camped before do not let it intimidate you. Start with just one of two nights and if you like it, you can do 3 or 4 nights the next time. Packing List for Camping

6. Bike Ride

Head out on a bike ride. Find a trail near you and spend part of your day soaking up some sunshine while biking through somewhere fabulous. I just found an amazing mountain biking trail near where I live, Knob Hill in Roanoake, TX.

8. Fishing

Fishing in Laval

Going fishing is always a great way to spend a day or half a day. Plus, it’s incredibly peaceful. If you are fishing with children it’s a great time to have an in-depth chat. I find all forms of fishing to be beneficial including salmon fishing and fly fishing.

9. Float the River

I love floating the river. I mean you’re floating around in the water soaking up the sunshine. What’s not to love? Granted, I’ve found that this can also be an intimidating activity for many which is why I put together a little how-to: How to Float the River. We live in Texas and there’s tons of rivers to float here! Best Places to go Tubing in Texas.

10. Fly a Kite

Another activity that can be peaceful, but can also be extremely stressful depending on the wind if flying a kite. The nice thing is, it often takes teamwork to get a kite up in the air.

Flying a kite can be a great way to play with your child and get some fresh air at the same time. Oddly enough, I used to always keep a kite and a frisbee in the car. You just never know when you will have some free time.

11. Cornhole

Playing cornhole

It’s amazing how much fun something as simple as playing corn hole can be. It takes little to no skill which means everyone can play. If you need to know the rules, just look it up on YouTube.

12. Geocaching

If you are unfamiliar with geocaching you are in for a real treat. It’s a super fun activity for families and the experience is never the same. You can go to their website and find some coordinates near you. Then you head out on what is basically a treasure hunt. The geocache is typically something small, possibly a tiny toy. Sometimes whatever container it is in, is large enough for you to add something to the geocache.

13. Beach Day

Have a beach day. Once you are at the beach, you can enjoy even more activities like skimboarding or boogie boarding. Or you can comb the beach for shells or build sandcastles. How To Go To The Beach On A Budget

14. Archery

Roatan, Honduras

You would be surprised to find out that there are archery ranges in some parks. Typically, no one is using them, which means no one is around!

15. Tennis

Tennis is a great way to burn off excess energy built up while sitting in front of a computer for too many hours. If tennis seems too challenging, try pickleball instead.

16. Kite Boarding and Kitesurfing

I had a friend just take a lesson and she says it’s way easier than it looks. Then I took a kiteboarding lesson and I found it to be borderline impossible to do. This is definitely for more athletic teens.

17. Rollerblading

Going old school with an activity like roller skating can be a blast. I’ve been rollerblading since 1993 and I highly recommend it. It’s great exercise.

18. Drive-in Movies

If you cannot go see a movie in a regular theater head to the drive-in theater instead. It’s a totally different experience and typically much cheaper. Some drive in’s have playgrounds! Here are 5 Tips for the Best Drive-in Movie Experience.

19. Rock Climbing

Not everyone knows how to rock climb, but there are many gyms that will teach you. Once you know what you are doing head outside and give it a try.

20. Skateboarding or Longboarding

Over recent years more and more people are participating in longboarding or skateboarding. Both of my boys decided to do this and picked it up quite easily.

21. Scavenger Hunt

Kids will get a kick out of seeing the animals and so will you. Here are the 12 Best Drive-thru Zoos in Texas.

23. Berry Picking

This is a seasonal activity, but if it is available is a great way to have some tasty fun. The last time we went berry picking was in Laval, Quebec. Because it gets so cold there they got their berries above ground in containers. In Oregon, all the berries grew from the ground and they have u-pick places all around. Just google u-pick berries to find a place near you.

24. Play Frisbee or Frisbee Golf

Playing frisbee is one of those things everyone can do. You could also toss a football back and forth. Just use what you have and head outside.

25. Off-roading

Polaris Adventures

Having a family night and reconnecting is important and can be invaluable for kids.

Here are some fun, helpful tips on creating a family night for your family:

Pizza and Game Night

Make every Friday a Pizza and Game night! There are so many fun games a family can play together. Some of our favorites are:

  • Watch Ya Mouth
  • Uno
  • Scrabble
  • Unstable Unicorns
  • Pie FaceFamily Game Night
  • Spoons.
    • How to Play Spoons:
      • Arrange the spoons in the center of the table and deal four cards to each player. Each player tries to make four of a kind. The dealer takes a card off the top of the deck to have five cards in his hand, removes one and passes it face down to the left. Each player discards to the person on his left. The last player places his discard into a trash pile. Cards are picked up and passed quickly around the table until someone gets four of a kind and takes a spoon from the center. Once the player with four of a kind takes a spoon, anyone can take a spoon. The player left without a spoon gets a letter. If at any time the draw cards run out, pause to reshuffle the trash pile and keep going. The winner is the last player remaining. Players move closer to elimination each time they don’t get a spoon and take the next letter in the word S-P-O-O-N. Spell it and you’re out. The player who reaches four of a kind first has a variety of ways he can take the first spoon. A demonstrative grab leads to a wild free-for-all. Either way, it’s hilarious.

How to plan game night

Camp Inside

  • Create an outdoor camp out in your living room: get your sleeping bags, flashlights, books, and games, make s’mores, and tell stories by the fireplace. You can take it a step further and make a fort. Pull together tables and chairs and drape blankets over them to create your own hiding places.

Read Together

Have a special story night where your child can pick out 3 – 10 books to read with you. Better yet, pick out an entire series to read together. Many of these have been made into movies, so as you finish the books you can watch the movie together.

Book Series for Elementary and Middle School:

Book Series for Tweens and Teens

Book Series Teens and College aged

I get that at a certain age you will not sit around reading out loud, but our family reads all the same books and then we can discuss them like a book club.

Cookies and Milk

  • Have cookies and milk, as a special treat. Have a time set aside with no devices where you just sit and talk to your child. Take it a step further and make cookies with your kids. Crinkle Cookies are easy to make and delicious. So are these Rudolphs Nose Christmas Cookies

Cook Together

Prepare a specially cooked meal together as a family putting the kids to work as your helpers. Set the table with candles, fancy glasses, and special music. Here are some easy meal families can make together: Easy Corn Chowder and Fancy Pants Chicken Casserole

Create an Indoor Picnic

Put down a blanket, plates, and silverware. Prepare picnic food of your choice and your child will love it.

Make a Movie Together

Make a little movie or a TikTok with your cell phones – explore slow-motion and other features – then enjoy watching them together and laughing.

Play Legos

Get out the Legos and create your own city.

Pray with Your Kids

Last but not least and not really a once a week kind of thing. Have a time where you list all of your blessings and thank God for each one. My favorite night devotional to do with kids is Jesus Calling for Kids.

Family night is a cherished tradition in many households. It’s a time when families can come together, bond, and have some fun. There are lots of games that are great for family night. What’s your family’s favorite?

Family nights are all about spending time together and having fun, so try out different games until you find one that everyone enjoys. Whatever game you choose to play, remember to have fun and enjoy each other’s company.

Learn how to plan a meaningful fall scavenger hunt and picnic, including a free printable scavenger hunt and thoughtful discussion prompts.

Grab that cozy flannel shirt, and slip into your favorite pair of jeans. Breathe in the revitalizing air of fall. It’s the ultimate time of the year for a family jaunt. The leaves dance on a crisp breeze, flaunting their luscious colors. Autumn is the ideal setting in which to explore the magnificent outdoors. Day trips to enjoy fall foliage do not have to cost a cent. Consider walking or biking paths or stage an outdoor family treasure hunt.

Fall Time Scavenger Hunt

Staging an “outdoor scavenger hunt” for the kids is loads of fun. It’s also educational and helps to get them exercising, as well. Plan a few days of preparation for the treasure hunt. This gets the children actively involved beforehand. Of course, planning ahead adds some zing to the overall experience by raising the excitement level. Together, you can decide what everyone will be searching out on the hunt. The possibilities are never-ending.

Make it interesting

Locating at least ten things in nature will ensure the kids will not be bored fifteen minutes into the excursion. Prior to the scavenger hunt, each child can pick five things that would be fun to look for. This is a great way to stimulate mental creativity. The parents will choose five more to add to the list. Instruct the kids to write out the items in a small notebook. They can check each item off the list when they locate it. The notebook can be carried easily in a backpack. Don’t forget to bring pens or pencils.

Outdoor location

12 Best Hiking Trails in Gatlinburg, Tennessee
Gatlinburg, Tennessee

The beauty of an outdoor scavenger hunt is the fact that you can do it right in your backyard. However, it works just as well when conducted at a nearby park. Take a stroll through a city neighborhood in search of items. If you live in the city, you may have to adjust the treasure hunt list accordingly. For instance, the children might search for yellow signs or the tallest or shortest brick building. They can look for birds that are native to the city.

Walking and biking paths also make a good spot for your scavenger hunt. Exploring nature in its entire splendor is energizing. Get the family out and into the fresh air. It’s the idyllic setting for a hike or biking. Indulge in a relaxing stroll in the woods or explore a designated walking trail. The local Chamber of Commerce generally provides information for bike and walking paths. Be sure to check out the activity section of your community newspaper. Generally, you can find many free, family-oriented events.

Find Nature Items

Needless to say, you can guide toddlers to find obvious outside treasures such as; a bright-red leaf, a curious pine cone, a feather, or a super cool stick. Older kids, however, will find it interesting to seek out items of nature, which are more challenging. Some of these might include; an abandoned bird’s nest, a mysterious carving, or out-of-the-ordinary rocks. Encourage the kids to utilize their imaginations.

Sharing the items found

Wrap up the scavenger hunt with an outdoor picnic. The picnic can have a twofold purpose. After a long hike, a rest is going to be welcomed. The family can share and discuss their finds over food, as well. The kids can make entries in their notebooks, describing what they found. Perhaps they can log in any special meaning, which they believe their treasures hold for them.

How to keep food warm for a picnic.

Here is a free printable fall-time scavenger hunt. Fall Time Scavenger Hunt

Have a Picnic

Pack a modest basket of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. Toss in yummy cookies, and some drinks, such as water or juice boxes. A toned-down picnic will keep the day uncomplicated for everyone. Simple is always the best route to take.

Have a Meaningful Discussion

During your picnic is a great time to discuss serious topics with your kids in a lighthearted setting. One topic you could discuss is money. A report by researchers at the University of Cambridge revealed that kids’ money habits are formed by age 7! Here are some simple ways to guide a conversation.

Explain What Money Is

Some things cannot be found they have to be paid for. You can show them the items you found during your scavenger hunt, which are free, versus the items you had to pay for, the picnic basket, the bread, the juice boxes, etc.

Explain How to Think Through Shopping

Take the discussion a step further by explaining how to shop properly, checking prices, using coupons, looking for a sale, and buying the off-brand. Use the off-brand juice boxes for the picnic as an example of how easy it is to make smart money choices.

Now get out there and enjoy nature’s bountiful beauty, have fun, and instill lifetime values. You better hurry because winter is just around the corner.

Young children love games. Playing tricks and games on a family member is fun. April Fool’s day is the perfect time for a child to indulge in a few harmless games. Traditionally April Fool’s day games and tricks should be played before midday. Keep the games simple so that even the youngest of children can join in the fun. Here’s a list of fun April Fools Day Games For Kids.

April Fools Day Games for Kids

April Fool’s day is meant for fun and games. Children love to plan to surprise their parents.

Empty Boiled Egg

April Fool’s breakfast games can work well. One of the most popular April Fool’s games known to man is the `empty boiled egg`. On the eve of April Fool’s day boil an egg. When the egg is hard-boiled let your child help you to knock the top of the egg off and scoop out the inside. Small children delight in simple games. The empty boiled eggshell can be placed upside down in Dad’s egg cup. There is every chance that Dad will catch on to the fact that his egg is just an empty shell, but he will be willing to play along with the children’s fun and games. Silly games can make young children `itch` with excitement. As Dad knocks the top off his empty boiled egg the kitchen will be filled with children’s laughter!

Toy Pranks

Tricks and games can be purchased from toy shops. If Dad loves a rasher of bacon for breakfast then buy a slice of rubber bacon for him to enjoy with his fried egg. Families who enjoy April Fool’s day fun and games will have endless jokes to choose from if they pay a visit to the toy store. The`whoopee cushion` has always been a firm favorite. Slip the `whoopee cushion` underneath Dad as he sits down to enjoy his breakfast. When the `whoopee cushion` vibrates there will be much laughter. In fact, there will be fun and games all around.

Another of the popular games is the `bent nail` that slips over the child’s finger. The nail looks like it has pierced the small finger and a tatty bandage that is covered in fake blood disguises the bent nail. Games encourage children to act out their part well. The child pretends to sob because the `nail` has gone through their finger. The parents show their concern and as the bandage is whipped away to reveal a finger that is intact the joke is enjoyed by all.

Children love games and they learn a lot from them. April Fool’s day games are the icing on the cake.

Are you taking your kids on a road trip to Disney? Here are 9 Disney activities and games for kids you can play during your road trip.

Best Disney Activities and Games for Kids on a Disney Road Trip including Disney Games for free!

Few things can beat a family vacation to the Magic Kingdom, but, if you live far away, the long car ride to Walt Disney World can be as exhausting for your kids as it is for you. Therefore, once you’ve secured your hotel reservations, made note of the local repair shop (in case of car emergencies), and packed everyone’s suitcases, it’s time to figure out how to keep the kids from growing bored during the drive. The following guide is a list of fun activities to keep your children occupied and happy while you focus on the road.

8 Disney Games and Activities Perfect for a Road Trip to Disney

1. Disney Sing-a-Long

A great way to engage your kids and lift their spirits when they’re sitting for long periods is by singing songs. When they’re jamming to great tunes from their favorite animated movies or television series, they’ll forget about how long they’ll have to wait (and sit) before meeting Mickey Mouse.

Most Disney series and movies have original soundtracks you can purchase and download to your phone or are available on streaming apps. Disney even has a Disney’s Greatest Hits albums. If your car has a CD player, you might consider going the old-fashioned route and filling a nylon CD binder with soundtracks from your son’s or daughter’s favorite Disney productions.

You can turn something as simple as picking and listening to music into an exciting activity by helping them decorate the binder with stickers of their beloved Disney characters before you leave, and letting them choose their tunes during the trip.

2. Disney Themed Bingo

Another fun activity to captivate your kids on the long car trip is bingo. While you can purchase ready-made bingo cards online, if time permits, you can make your own so they are specifically tailored to your kids’ tastes. You can find printable, Disney-themed bingo cards online or print blank ones and design them with your kids. For added fun, use small candies, gummies, or stickers for markers. If the road trip takes more than an hour or two, print coloring bingo cards for your children to enjoy.

3. Walt Disney Matching Card Game

Your kids will love playing a Disney-themed matching game during the long car trip. As with bingo, you can purchase a Disney-themed set of cards from most retail stores or design them yourself using printable online templates. Matching games may seem a little less engaging than bingo, but they come with a bonus: Playing matching or number games helps your child develop their memory and communication skills.

4.  Lap Desk & Organizer

Wherever the children go, messes and messiness are sure to follow. However, you can minimize the necessary clean up by providing a desk for them to work on. You can use a flat, metal cookie sheet as a surface for playing games that involve cards or paper, for coloring, or for holding snacks.

Although you’ll probably need to clean stray crayon marks after the trip, a cookie sheet is an inexpensive alternative to most retail car-seat lap desks. Moreover, the desk doesn’t take up a lot of space and is easy to store when not in use. Younger children might enjoy using the cookie tray to play with magnets, so be sure to use baking trays with magnetic properties (check the labels; some metal sheets are not magnetic). If you can’t get your hands on magnetic trays, consider using adhesive magnetic strips instead.

5. I’m Going on a Picnic … in Disney World

Teaching your kids to play the “I’m going on a picnic” game is easy and will leave them laughing for hours. The original game starts when one player says “I’m going on a picnic.” The player follows by saying “… and I’m taking …” and listing an item that starts with the letter “A.” The second player will repeat what the first person said and add something that starts with the letter “B.”

The game continues as each person repeats what the previous individual brings to the picnic while adding an item of their own. Each new item must start with a different letter of the alphabet. To keep consistent with your Disney-themed car adventure, you can choose a specific Disney movie for the picnic’s setting and bring items related to the characters or worlds you’d find in that film.

For example, you could start the game by saying “I’m going on a picnic in Wonderland, and I’m bringing … apple jam,” or “I’m going on a picnic in Neverland, and I’m bringing pixie dust.” Adding a setting will make the game a bit more difficult, but your kids will enjoy thinking up picnic items they can bring from their favorite Disney works.

6. Counting the Miles with Mickey

For exceptionally long trips, you can make tickets with numbers on them to help your kids keep track of how long you’ve been traveling. First, cut a piece of black construction paper into Mickey Mouse’s signature silhouette, and then assign a number to each ticket for every hour you’ll be on the road. Every time an hour passes, say “Tickets please!” and collect the Mickey tickets from your kids.

If you live conveniently close to Disney World, you can use tickets to keep track of the miles you’ve driven.  Your kids will feel like they’re on a train adventure rather than a long car ride and will anticipate each hour with excitement.

7.  Who Am I: The Disney Edition

The “Who Am I?” game is usually played as an icebreaker at school or camps, but you can easily adapt it to meet your road trip activity needs. The original game involves writing the name of a character or person on an index card and taping it to your forehead. Other players would be able to see the name of your persona.

The point of the game is for you to ask a series of “yes” or “no” questions to help you guess who you are. To play the game in the car, write the names of Disney characters on index cards, or, if your children are too young to read, print and cut out pictures of Disney characters for them to choose from. Let them decide the number of questions you can ask and guess accordingly. If you win, you get to choose the next guesser. If you lose, you’ll have to spend another round guessing the name of your character.

8. Disney Spelling Bee

Last, but not least, is another simple, yet exciting, car brain game for your kids. Hosting a Disney-themed spelling bee in your backseat is a fun way for children to practice their spelling skills while passing the time. You can use cards from the matching game or “Who am I?” to choose which Disney movie title or character’s name they’ll spell.

9. Disney Audible Books

Listening to an audible book is a great way to pass the time and there are lots of audible Disney Books! Pretty much any story Disney has ever told is available as an audible book.

Let’s face it: although we’d ideally like to ignore our technology-based products while exploring a foreign land, they can come in handy at times, particularly in terms of the games they tend to provide. Likewise, while we’d prefer to spark conversation with family and friends, sometimes it isn’t flowing around the poolside, and a classic board game is required to brighten up the mood. It happens.

Thankfully, in today’s innovative climate, holidaymakers aren’t short on viable entertainment options to pack when they need some light entertainment while away on holiday. Whether it’s a much-loved tablet product or a classic card game, there are plenty of viable options that are capable of providing fun wherever you are on this wonderful planet of ours.

Pokemon Go

For many travelers, while some games bring people together and are perfect for playing in a group, there are times when some alone time with a solid gaming product is required. Whether your chosen platform is an Android tablet or an Apple smartphone, there is a wide range of games to get through, although some might not work depending on where you are in the world. Still, many games are accessible in most foreign territories, such as Pokémon Go.

Relax Gaming’s Midnight Marauder

If you’d prefer to stay still while soaking up some sun on the sun lounger, then Relax Gamings Midnight Marauder (18+ only) is a superb option. A different offering to Niantic’s Pokémon-themed masterpiece, gamers can enjoy this smash-hit title’s robbery theme as they follow a master thief during a big heist late at night. Filled with various features and plenty of challenges to overcome, this top title is well worth exploring on vacation.

Card games

Sometimes, a simple deck of cards can save the day and fight off any boredom during a long coach journey to your next destination.

For any adult travelers, poker is a game that is capable of passing a good few hours, as players aim to make a straight and record a big win with a notable flush. Additionally, it’s the ideal game to enjoy in the evenings, particularly if you want to rumble with a bluffing loved one.

If poker isn’t your thing, then a game that’s suitable for all ages might be. Spoons certainly fit the bill in that respect, as players pick up and discard cards until they get four of the same number.

War is another solid card option, with the game generally consisting of two players with 26 cards. Then, from there, both players flip their top cards over at the same time, leaving the player with the card with the highest value winning the round and taking both cards as a reward. If a card of equal value is flipped on both sides, then war is officially underway. There is more to the game, but a quick YouTube tutorial should provide a clearer picture.

Top Travel Board Games

Board games are another great option. There are so many products that you can pack away with you, from Hanabi and Travel Monopoly to Citadels and Sushi Go. They’re great to play in groups and provide hours of entertainment.

Ticket to Ride: First Journey

For families with teens and tweens, Ticket to Ride: First Journey offers a simplified version of the popular board game. Players collect train cards to claim railway routes across the map. The game not only provides entertainment but also a subtle educational element as players learn geography in a fun and interactive way.

Bananagrams

A fast-paced word game that requires no pencils or paper, Bananagrams is a fantastic choice for families on the move. The banana-shaped pouch makes it easy to toss into a backpack, and the game can be played anywhere – from the beach to a cozy cabin.

Codenames: Pictures

This social deduction game is a hit with college students and older teens. In Codenames: Pictures, players use word association to uncover their team’s agents. It’s a great way to foster teamwork and strategic thinking. The compact version of the game is perfect for travel, ensuring hours of suspenseful fun.

Uno Flip

A classic card game with a twist, Uno Flip is perfect for family travel. The double-sided cards add a new layer of strategy, keeping players on their toes. Its compact size makes it ideal for playing on planes, in hotel rooms, or during a picnic in the park.

As you embark on your family adventures, don’t forget to pack these travel board games to create lasting memories and foster a sense of camaraderie. Whether you’re racing to spot symbols, strategizing your train routes, or deciphering clues, these games are sure to bring joy to your travel experience. Happy gaming and safe travels!

We live in a fast-paced world where our need to explore often clashes with our busy plans. Combining STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) activities with travel is a great way to satisfy our desire to learn while also satisfying our wanderlust. This article’s goal is to give you all the information you need on how to incorporate STEM into your travels so that you have an educational and fun trip.

STEM Activities: The Foundation of a Smart Journey

It’s important to know how important STEM activities are in the modern world before you go on your STEM-themed travel journey. STEM isn’t just a subject in school; it’s a way of life that affects how we think and solve problems. Using STEM on your trips will not only help you learn more, but it will also spark interest in those around you.
