A great alternative to Universal Studios is the Universal CityWalk. You can expect a similar experience in a different setting. 10. Hollywood Sign

The famed Hollywood sign is known as an American landmark and cultural icon around the world, but it is also one of the best free things to do in Los Angeles. The bold letters stand out from afar and will stand out in your mind forever. 

Take your kids to see the dazzling symbol in a variety of different ways depending on how enthusiastic your children are (and their age). You can choose to hike to the sign, marvel from a viewpoint (such as Griffith Observatory) or take a bus.

11 Things NOT to Do in Los Angeles

To make the most of your LA adventures, avoid making these mistakes while in town:

1. Assume You Need a Travel Buddy

You can absolutely visit LA alone and you don’t need a travel buddy. I did it, and I can assure you there are plenty of solo things to do in LA alone to keep yourself busy and having a blast. It’s also perfectly safe to visit Los Angeles as a solo traveler, as long as you operate with the same level of caution you would in any big city. 

Whether you’re taking in the sunset at Santa Monica Pier or going out for a solo dinner, Los Angeles is quite a comfortable place to explore on your own. So, no need to wait around for a travel buddy, just go.

2. Only Eat In-N-Out

This burger chain is popular for a reason, and by all means, give it a chance and experience it for yourself. But you’d be doing a disservice to yourself if you didn’t explore the broader food scene Los Angeles has to offer. 

LA has lots of great food options to try. On my trip, I tried everything from Oaxacan food to Korean desserts. Consider adding Myung in Dumplings to your itinerary, a hole-in-the-wall spot popularized by legend Anthony Bourdain. And of course, if you happen across a food truck while you’re out and about jump on the opportunity to grab a bite. 

3. Staying Land Locked

If you’re going to LA, beaches may already be on your mind. But as it’s such a big city you easily could have a completely landlocked experience without proactively planning in some beach time. 

Santa Monica Pier has a nice beach and a charming feel to it. It’s a great place to wander over to during the day or even just for sunset. There are a variety of smaller beaches driving along the coast you could also explore if that’s how you’d like to spend a good majority of your time. 

4. Thinking You Can Easily Get Across Town

The best advice I received as I planned my own trip to Los Angeles, was to book my accommodations in the part of Los Angeles where I wanted to spend the most amount of time. Locals warned me repeatedly about the traffic and the bigness of the city. 

I chose to stay in Santa Monica, as the area was also fairly walkable in and of itself. When planning excursions to other parts of LA, do so strategically. Consult a map and plan to see all attractions in similar areas around the same time rather than traveling back and forth from vastly different areas. 

5. Missing Out on the Museums

LA is not all beaches, food, and palm trees (although we love all of those!). Los Angeles also has a solid museum scene. The Griffith Observatory is a must, as it also offers incredible views over the city and of the Hollywood sign. Plus, you might recognize it from the popular film, La La Land. 

If you can, plan your visit to overlap with sunset. The sunset views over the city from up here are beautiful.

A couple of other popular museums to check out are LACMA (Los Angeles County Museum of Art) and The Getty. You’ve likely seen the LACMA on Instagram, as the lamp posts outside of it are a popular photo shoot spot. Get your own iconic LA snapshot when you visit in front of this public art display titled ‘Urban Light.’

6. Expecting to Touch the Hollywood Sign

Some images you might have seen of the Hollywood sign could be misleading. You might be surprised to discover that you won’t be able (or allowed) to go all the way right up to the sign. It’s monitored around the clock by LA officials. 

However, many of the hiking trails and walking tours will get you close enough for a worthwhile picture. I actually snapped my own photos from much further away, at the Griffith Observatory, and they’re still a great souvenir from my visit. 

7. Not Packing a Sweater 

Don’t make the mistake of expecting only hot weather during your trip to Los Angeles. While your days will likely feel balmy, evenings are consistently chilly so plan accordingly. Bring a lightweight cardigan, denim, or leather jacket, or a scarf that can also be worn as a wrap for easy layering. 

8. Dressing Like a Tourist

LA is pretty casual and you can get away with wearing pretty laid-back apparel. But there’s a line to avoid crossing if you don’t want to look like a tourist — your flip-flops are only for the beach and sneakers are for working out. Have some sandals or heels on hand, and stick to jeans and a tee shirt and you’ll be more likely to blend in a bit with the locals. 

9. Visiting in Summer

While summertime is a perfectly fine time to visit most of California, this doesn’t apply as readily to Los Angeles. LA in the summer is extremely humid and muggy. For a more comfortable experience, avoid visiting in summer months (especially in July or August). Instead, visit in early fall or late spring for the best weather in LA.  

10. Insisting on Witnessing a Celebrity Sighting

It’s true, LA is home to many of our beloved TV, movie, and music stars. But reconsider whether it’s really worth your time to try to see them out and about in LA. Of course, the tourism scene in LA caters to this desire by offering tours along routes of celebrity homes. But the reviews for tours like these aren’t the greatest. 

While you can certainly research where celebrities tend to dine/hang out in LA and then show up there, do so more with the intent of enjoying yourself wherever you end up than focusing on securing a sighting. They’re also just people, after all…

11. Not Getting Off the Beaten Track

With so many popular, well-known attractions in Los Angeles calling your name, it would be easy to neglect the city’s hidden gems. And it has quite a few! Here are some off-the-beaten-track things you could do in LA:

• Watch a movie or concert at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery for celebs
• See a public art installation made of broken glass, called Watts Tower
• Spend a few hours at the Museum of Death
• Have a picnic alongside locals at an old, abandoned zoo in Griffith Park
• Walk the Mural Mile
• Step back in time at the quirky Time Travel Mart

You can see the Hollywood sign from your car, but it’s much more fun to hike there. The hike takes about 2 hours each way and is about 2 miles in total. You can start at any of these three locations: Beachwood Canyon, Griffith Park, or Mount Lee.

You may be wondering where to park your car; thankfully, lots of cheaper monthly parking in Los Angeles is available through apps you can get directly to your phone. We would suggest booking a monthly parking spot as it will work out considerably cheaper. You can book a secure space and then use public transport when you don’t want the hassle of driving around. 

Cruise the Pacific Coast Highway

If you’re looking for a way to get out of the city for a day or two, we recommend cruising the Pacific Coast Highway! You’ll be able to see the ocean and enjoy California’s beautiful coastline. If you don’t have a car, renting a car in Los Angeles is easy, and can be done with any major rental company in Los Angeles.

People watch at Venice Beach

I could spend days people-watching at Venice Beach. It’s a bustling place with plenty of locals, tourists, and colorful characters from all walks of life—all here to enjoy the sun, surf and sand.

This is where you can see street performers and musicians who will entertain you for hours on end. If you want to join in, there are many different activities to choose from yoga classes, skateboarding lessons, or even surfing lessons if you’re up for it!

Here’s how to get from LAX airport to Venice Beach. 

Go to a taping of your favorite TV show

This is an excellent option if you’re a TV show fan and want to see what goes on behind the camera. You can get tickets online for shows filming in Los Angeles, often allowing you to watch the taping from a particular section reserved for people. Another option is to go directly to the studio where your favorite show films. If they’re not busy with another show’s taping at the time, they’ll let you in as long as you have proof that you’ve already purchased tickets online or through an agent.

Take an architectural tour in Downtown LA

You’ve got to see the architectural wonder that is downtown LA. The mix of old and new, modern and traditional, and European and American styles is unlike any other part of Los Angeles. It’s also an excellent place for exploring on foot.

Visit the Museum of Broken Relationships in Hollywood

The Museum of Broken Relationships is a unique museum that offers an emotional experience through the donated items of people who have experienced a relationship.

The museum is located on Hollywood Boulevard and open to the public, so your 3-month stay in Los Angeles could include a visit. The museum is free to enter, and there are events every Thursday at 7 pm that are also free and open to the public.

See a world-class concert at the Dolby Theatre

A visit to the Dolby Theatre is a must for any music lover. It has since hosted hundreds of concerts and events, including awards ceremonies like the Emmys and Oscars.

Although concerts at the Dolby Theatre are not cheap—single tickets start at $40—it’s worth paying extra for premium seats if you have time to spare before your flight departs from LAX airport.

Run down Main Street at Santa Monica Pier

For those who like basketball more than baseball, Staples Center has the Lakers and Clippers games on several nights during the week. As with any Laker game, there will be celebrities everywhere!

Surf lessons in Malibu

There are multiple options in Malibu if you want to learn how to surf. It can be expensive if you’re looking for a more traditional surfing experience—where you go out with a group of people and learn from an instructor. But if you prefer a more casual approach, there are plenty of places where you can rent boards and try them on your own. The prices range from $20–$60 per hour (depending on whether or not the board is included) but can be cheaper if the board is part of an all-day package or if it’s your first time surfing.

I’ve put together an itinerary that’s an excellent winter getaway for the whole family. You’ll get to play some of the world’s finest golf courses while non-golfers will enjoy some of the most beautiful and entertaining destinations in the world. You can even rough it in a few places if you’re into camping, or book a room in a lodge if you’re looking for more luxurious accommodations.

First stop: Phoenix, Arizona

If you’re getting away in the winter, Phoenix is the best place to start your road trip. From the moment your plane lands, the whole city radiates heat. If you’re there in February or March, you can take in a few Cactus League MLB spring training games, getting up close and personal with big stars and top prospects in a way you can’t do during the regular season.

TPC Scottsdale

Golfers will want to make their way to TPC Scottsdale, the legendary home of the Waste Management Phoenix Open. Featuring 36 holes of stunning championship golf, including the famous rowdy par 3 16th and driveable par 4 17th, TPC Scottsdale makes for memorable rounds with both incredible architecture and stunning scenery.

Stadium Course

The Stadium Course is the one the PGA Tour plays on, and it features surprisingly large and forgiving fairways. After enjoying a round at the Stadium Course and another at the Champions Course at TPC Scottsdale, pack up the car and head north to one of the Seven Wonders of the Natural World: the Grand Canyon. It’s a sight everyone should see at least once in their lifetime. If you leave Phoenix early in the morning, you can make it to the Grand Canyon with plenty of time to take one of the legendary mule rides into the Canyon.

There are plenty of fantastic lodges in Grand Canyon villages, or you can pitch a tent at one of the 4 developed campgrounds that allow vehicles.

And on to Vegas

After you’ve gaped at the natural beauty of the canyon carved over the course of millennia by the Colorado River, you’ll make the 4-hour drive west to the most artificial city in the country, the iconic Las Vegas. Even non-golfers and non-gamblers will be awed by the spectacle of Sin City.

First timers should check out the High Roller at the Linq, a giant Ferris Wheel featuring a half-hour ride in a fully enclosed pod that takes you 550 feet in the air and provides incredible views of the city and surrounding landscape.

Shadow Creek Golf Course

You’ll want to be sure you’re staying at an MGM resort, and be there on a weekday. Why? You need to play Shadow Creek Golf Course.

Shadow Creek was the site of The Match between Tiger and Phil in 2018, but prior to that spotlight, it was already well established as a true bucket-list course, specifically because of the amazing fairways, where golfers would come to practice & analyze their swings. Originally an invite-only club, it’s now available Monday thru Thursday to anyone staying at a Vegas MGM resort, who’s willing to pay $500-600 to experience it. And it’s worth it. A Tom Fazio design that reportedly cost $60 million to complete, it’s a lush oasis in the middle of the desert.

It’s completely out of place, with its 21,000 imported trees, lush fairways, and babbling creeks contributing to a beautiful, surreal round of golf. It’s very non-Vegas in a very Vegas way. Yes, that makes no sense, but neither does Shadow Creek. And you’ll be glad you played it.

Back to Nature

The classic next stop would be LA, but we’re going to postpone that in favor of looping around to Sequoia National Park to take in the majesty of California’s magnificent trees. You can spend the day driving through the park and along the Kings Canyon Scenic Byway, a 50-mile route that can take half a day to navigate because of its numerous incredible photo ops. It’s worth the extra time to stop and hike to the breathtaking Grizzly Falls.

You may need a breather after the madness of Vegas, so a night or two in a lodge or one of its numerous campground options is recommended. The General Sherman Tree is a must-do photo op. Measuring 275 feet high and over 36 feet in diameter, the sheer size of the historic tree is humbling. Lines for photo ops can be long, so bring a snack and some patience.

The 2-mile hike and then 400 steps to the top of Moro Rock is also well worth your time, providing mind-blowing views of the Great Western Divide at the summit.

Hollywood, here we come

After the breather and beauty of Sequoia National Park, Los Angeles is just a few hours due south. Golfers will drop off the non-golfers in LA for sightseeing and continue an hour south to Monarch Beach Golf Links for a gorgeous oceanside golf experience. While Monarch Beach is a bit of “a tale of two nines”, the front nine will stick in your memory for its incredible oceanfront holes. I’d love to see them swap the nines, so you play the inland nine before making the turn to a remarkable stretch of holes.

As it is, the opening 5 holes are truly great golf. The dogleg third, a short par 4 at the edge of the ocean, is a stunner. Followed by two beautiful par 3s, it’s worth the price of admission alone.

Los Angeles Activities

And Los Angeles is an adventure unto itself. Tour Beverly Hills and watch for stars, spend a day at Universal Studios Hollywood or Disneyland, check out Santa Monica Pier, or just go to the beach!

If you’d rather play golf closer to the city than Monarch Beach or want to save a bit of cash after the pricey Shadow Creek round, there are several quality municipal courses that shouldn’t be overlooked. Balboa at Sepulveda in Encino is the best of these, always in good condition and with enough interesting holes to keep your appetite whetted until the final stop on your road trip.

San Diego

A scant two hours south of Los Angeles (assuming you don’t leave during rush hour), San Diego is home to Torrey Pines Golf Course, one of the best municipal golf destinations in the world. Home to the Farmers Insurance Open each year as well as numerous major championships (who could forget Tiger Woods’ 2008 US Open victory at Torrey Pines), Torrey Pines is one of the best public golf destinations in the world.

3 Golf Courses at Torrey Pines

Both the North and South Courses are incredible golf experiences, though the South course may have some course construction impacting your round as they prepare for the 2021 US Open. You’ll recognize both golf courses as they’re both used for the Farmers Insurance Open each year. The course is known as a get-together for senior golfers to meet & greet

The clifftop courses provide such gorgeous views that non-golfers may want to come along just for the ride. The North Course is regarded as slightly easier, but both present big challenges to the average golfer, with tight fairways and fast, complex greens. Make sure you select tee boxes that accurately reflect your skill level to get the best experience: playing the courses at too long a yardage can turn a lovely walk into a difficult slog.

The course is always in perfect condition, with lush fairways and slick greens. It’s a beautiful way to end a once-in-a-lifetime golf road trip.

San Diego Activities

But San Diego has a lot to offer beyond one of the best public golf facilities in the world! The San Diego Zoo is regarded as the best in the world. Undersea life fans can visit SeaWorld and catch the legendary killer whale shows featuring Shamu. The Mission Beach boardwalk is a beautiful oceanfront stroll with amusement parks and bars aplenty, as well as bike rentals and surfing classes. Or book an offshore experience fishing or whale-watching as the giant underwater mammals migrate in the Pacific Ocean.

But you’ll probably leave that to the non-golfers on the trip and head back to Torrey Pines for one more glorious round before you have to get back to real life.

The USA is a huge country and there are probably thousands of beaches. As you can imagine I have not had a chance to visit them all. I have been blessed to visit many beaches and I must say I never visit a beach I do not love. Based on my experiences thus far I have picked out what I think are the 10 best beaches in the United States. Here they are!

10 Best Beaches in the United States

Hanauma Bay, Oahu

Hanauma Bay is a state park and does require a fee to get in! It is one of only two beaches I’ve included that charge a fee, but it’s such an incredible place it’s worth the fee.

This area was declared a protected marine life conservation area and underwater park in 1967. Here you will find not only a stunning beach but the best snorkeling in Oahu. Be careful to not touch or walk on the coral while visiting. Do not forget that they are CLOSED ON TUESDAYS!

There are lots of wonderful beaches all around Oahu like the beach in front of the Aulani Resort. Be sure to make time to visit several beaches.

Poipu Beach, Kauai 

Poipu Beach is on the south part of Kauai. It is somewhat protected making it a safer place for children to swim. One nice thing about this beach is that even if it is cold everywhere else on the island it is almost always warm here.

You will want to be sure and bring your goggles because the snorkeling is excellent. This is definitely one of the best beaches in the United States to visit with your family year-round!

Kauai has many fantastic beaches as well as incredible hiking. Be sure to make time for a hike or two.

Shell Island

Shell Island is a little island in Florida in the Gulf of Mexico that is basically part of Panama City Beach. To get out there, you will have to get a boat. You can rent a boat like we did or catch a shuttle from St. Andrews State Park for a fee. There are several places that rent boats, including the Tyndall AFB if you’re military.

If you have kids with you, take note that the water on the side that faces towards Panama City Beach, FL is quite calm. You can easily walk over to the other side that faces the open Gulf of Mexico, where the waves are much larger and there are typically more seashells.

Mexico Beach, Florida 

Mexico Beach is to the east of Panama City and west of Gulf County. This little beach is usually not crowded. It’s a drive to get out here, but once you get here the beach and parking are free. This is a fun spot to collect shells and boogieboard.

If you get hungry, I recommend eating at Toucan’s. Keep in mind that there is next to no lodging here. 

To visit Mexico Beach for the day you will want to stay in nearby Panama City Beach where there is a lot more going on: shopping, restaurants, and family-friendly activities.

Update: I am heartbroken to update this. Toucans was completely destroyed during the hurricane as was most of Mexico Beach. They are really hurting down there. If you are able to send donations to one of the local organizations helping that area.

Santa Monica Beach

Located super close to LA is Santa Monica beach, one of the most fun beaches in California. The famous Santa Monica Pier is located here and is covered with rides and vendors. The beach is sprawling and has a gymnastics-like playground on parts of it. 

Near the beach, you will find tons of restaurants and shops. Our favorite restaurant near here so far has been M Street Kitchen. Just south of Santa Monica beach is the famous Venice Beach. This has long been one of the best beaches in the United States for many families to visit year-round.

Coronado Beach San Diego California

This beach is a great spot near San Diego to surf, paddleboard, boogie board, or just hang out. There are even tide pools during low tide at Coronado Central Beach.

Myrtle Beach 

With 60 miles of beaches, Myrtle Beach in North Carolina has a lot to offer. The beach, of course, is beautiful, but that’s just one of the perks of vacationing here. There are tons of shopping and restaurants. The activities available vary from water sports to kid-friendly shows to amusement & water parks and so much more.

Flamenco Beach

Flamenco Beach in Puerto Rico is considered one of the best beaches in the world, so with Puerto Rico being part of the United States, I thought I should include it. It’s known for having shallow turquoise water, white sand, and good diving spots. The beach has bathroom facilities, showers, and bathrooms.

Ecola State Park 

Just north of Cannon Beach is Ecola State Park, one of Oregon’s most beautiful beaches. Here you can enjoy the beach or you can check out miles of hiking trails, and picnic areas. The views are substantial here, including great vantage points for bird and whale watchers. There is a $5 fee to enter this state park. I recommend staying at Surfsand Resort in Cannon Beach when you visit.

Jekyll Island

Jekyll Island, Georgia is home to four different beaches, including the romantic Driftwood Beach and family-friendly Great Dunes beach. Also on the island are historic homes, excellent restaurants, and even a water park.

Depending on when you visit the mosquitos can be horrible. We went in August and they were brutal. Take lots of bug repellant.

1. Go on a Hike by the Hollywood Sign:

Although you can’t go all the way up right next to the Hollywood Sign, you can hike up by it and you simply cannot go to L.A without seeing the Hollywood sign!

 2. Hollywood Walk of Fame: 

This is probably my favorite part of L.A.! Seeing all of the stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame is so cool and the best part is it’s completely free. You can create awesome photos by taking pictures with your favorite famous people’s stars. Also here is the famous Chinese theater.

Los Angeles is such a huge, iconic, and amazing city in the United States. I bet you didn’t know how much fun that you could have for totally free! Money isn’t everything and there are plenty of ways to have fun without it.
