Visiting Gruene, Texas (part of New Braunfels) is the perfect weekend getaway from most major cities in Texas. Just a four-hour drive from Dallas and only an hour from Austin you will find yourself in a late 1800s German cotton community turned entertainment, dining, and shopping destination! Here in this walkable city, you will find more than 20 locally owned shops and boutiques. Now, don’t assume this is just a German town these days. Although that is the way it started, this town is Texan on every level. If you are looking for a super “Texan” experience, this town is it. Pack your boots cause you are going to wear them a lot!

Take a Gruene Weekend Fall Getaway

I recommend visiting Gruene, pronounced “green”, in the fall when the temperatures are a little cooler and they host their annual Gruene Wine and Music festival. This year, the 39th Annual Gruene Wine & Music Fest benefiting United Way of Comal County kicks off October 9 (Columbus Day Weekend) and features four days of music and wine in the quaint town of Gruene. Over 20 + Americana artists will take the stage at Gruene Hall with wine and craft beer tastings offered at The Grapevine.

Things to do in Gruene, Texas

Visit a Unique Craft Brewery
New Braunfels Brewing

New Braunfels Brewing, known for its infamous sour pickle beer, it is one of 19 Texas craft breweries that are part of the Hill Country Craft Beer Trail. Ten craft beer bars and 4 distilleries also participate in the Hill Country Craft Beer Trail that stretches from New Braunfels to Blanco and everything in between. They have giant Jenga and giant connect four. Located at 180 W Mill St #100, New Braunfels, TX 78130.

Visit a Winery
The Grapevine in Gruene Texas

The Grapevine: If you only have enough time for one winery, consider the Grapevine. It offers one of the largest selections of TX wines in the state, with selections from over 25 Texas wineries, including the special wine Llano makes just for Gruene! It’s open 7 days a week and located right in the heart of Gruene. Most of the day they have live music. So while you enjoy your wine flight, you can also enjoy some local music. Located at1612 Hunter Rd, New Braunfels, TX 78130.

Listen to Live Music
Gruene Dance Hall

It doesn’t really matter when you visit; there seems to be live music almost 24 hours a day in Gruene. But no visit would be complete without visting Texas’ Oldest Dance Hall, Gruene Hall. Not only is it historic, it’s also some of the best live music in the state of Texas and that’s saying something. We have no shortage of good live music in our state.

Float the River
Guadalupe River View

If it’s warm enough, a fun way to spend the day or even just half the day is floating the Guadalupe River. There are lots of places to float the river in this area, including many outfitters that will pick you up and bring you back to where you started.

If you’ve never floated the river, read our post: How to Float the River. This will give you all the information you need for a successful float trip.

Where to Eat in Gruene

Gristmill River Restaurant

Gristmill River Restaurant in Gruene,Texas

Located in the ruins of an old 1878 cotton gin, now celebrating 45+ years in business, serving up an array of Texas classics like ribs, chicken-fried steak, and onion rings.

Mozie’s
Mozie's Gruene

Mozie’s is a great place for lunch with good salads and sandwiches. Start with the onion ring appetizer. They are super thin but super tasty, and they go great with a spicy margarita.

Myron’s Prime Steakhouse
Myron's Prime Steakhouse

If you want a fabulous steak, Myron’s is your place! They only serve USDA Prime beef. I had a steak and my friend had fish. Both were wonderful. They have a second location in San Antonio.

Krause’s Biergarten
Krause's Biergarten

It’s hard to say what time of day I best recommend dining here. It’s much quieter at brunch on the weekends than in the evenings when there is live music. No matter when you visit, you are going to have a great meal.

Where to Stay in Gruene
Gruene Mansion Inn

I personally recommend staying at Gruene Mansion Inn. This inn was one of the first buildings in Gruene in 1872 and served as H.D. Gruene’s historic Eastlake Victorian home and cotton plantation. I stayed in one of their rooms overlooking the river.

The porch was divine. I sat out there rocking away with my guest, listening to the nearby music coming from Gruene Hall. Despite having late-night music on both sides once inside, you couldn’t hear a thing. They provided earplugs, but there wasn’t much need for them. There are also a couple of local bottles of wine in your room. Perfect for enjoying on the patio on a nice night.

They do have a small on-site eatery, the Pantry, located inside the historic inn. They serve up diverse and locally sourced charcuterie boards, fresh pastries, and cookies, as well as breakfast and lunch items. There’s no room to eat inside, but you can take it back to your room or enjoy it outside somewhere. They have plenty of random outdoor seating sprinkled throughout the property. They do offer coffee for $3 a cup, but your room also has a coffee maker with local coffee to brew.

Check current prices at the Gruene Mansion Inn.

Find out everything you will need to float the river with kids, plus a list of fun rivers to float across the United States.

How to Float a River with Kids

How to float the river with kids

One of our favorite outdoor activities to do as a family is float the river. It’s relaxing and fun. We typically float for half a day so somewhere between 3 – 5 hours. If you’ve never floated a river, it can be a little intimidating even though there’s no skill needed. There are a few designated areas that I call out below where you can float.

There are some things you need to know before you float. For example, what to wear and how to chill your drinks.  Use your judgment and make sure conditions are safe before heading out.

What to wear while floating the river:

  • Clothes and shoes that can get wet like your swimsuit
  • Shoes that stay on your feet, like river sandals, aqua socks, or even tennis shoes you don’t mind getting wet. Do not wear flip flops.
  • Sunglasses
  • If you wear glasses, straps to keep them secure are a good idea.
  • Hat
  • Wearable Drybag

Other Items to Bring

  • Raft or tubes: In Texas, tubes are ideal, because it’s so hot and the water is warm. In Oregon and Idaho, rafts are better because the water is so cold.
  • Life jackets: Laws vary by state, but everyone should always have a life jacket. Never take a child into a river without a life jacket.
  • Paddles: You may not need them, but on the off chance you do, you will be happy to have them with you.
  • Sunscreen
  • Snacks: Pack snacks with minimal packaging.
  • Non-alcoholic beverages
  • Water: It’s important that everyone stays well hydrated while out in the sun.
  • Mesh laundry bag: I use a mesh laundry bag and fill it with drinks and tie it to our raft. Typically the water is so cold it will keep the drinks super cold.
  • Waterproof camera: Nowadays there are lots of waterproof cameras on the market.
  • Air Pump: You will want to quickly fill up your tubes and rafts.

What else to bring, but leave in the car until the end:

  • A change of dry clothes
  • Towel

What Not to Bring

  • Glass bottles or containers
  • Styrofoam coolers or cups

Where to Float a River with Kids

How to Float the river with kids

Florida:

Fort White offers the most popular place to float in Florida at Ichetcucknee Springs State Park and is open May – September.

  • Visitors bringing tubes into the park:  Enter park at the north park entrance located at 8294 SW Elim Church Road.
  • Drivers will leave tubes and passengers at the tube drop off location in the upper parking lot area.
  • Drivers will proceed to the South main entrance parking area located at 12087 SW U.S. Highway 27.
  • Drivers will purchase a shuttle bracelet for transportation to North main entrance tube drop off from the general store. (The driver can also purchase tram bracelets for everyone in their party)
  • Visitors renting tubes from within the park will need to enter the park at South main entrance instead, located at 12087 SW U.S. Highway 27.

Between Jacksonville and Tallahassee is Madison Blue Spring State Park, where you can float on weekends from May to September.

In Apopka, you can float Rock Springs Run in Kelly Park. Bring your own, or rent tubes for $5 – $7 from private outfitters located just outside the park. The float trip is short, it only takes about 25 minutes.  When you are done, it is a 5-minute walk on a paved sidewalk back to the start. The deepest part is about 5 feet and is much shallower in many places.

In High Springs you can do a short float down the Santa Fe River at Ginnie Springs. Put in at Devil’s Spring and float for an hour. You will exit at Twin Spring and walk back to where you parked. It takes around 15 minutes to walk back on the tubing trail. There are free air stations located in the park.

In Holt, in the Florida panhandle is Blackwater River State Park. Blackwater River offers a four-mile stretch of water that will take you 3-5 hours to float.

Spring Creek in Marianna near Tallahassee offers a four-hour tubing experience.  Start at Merrit’s Mill Pond where Spring Creek opens up to the Chipola River.

Georgia:

Near Atlanta, in Roswell, you can float the Chattahoochee River. You will only want to float here if it is over 80 degrees outside because the water is cold.

In Blue Ridge, the Toccoa River offers smooth rides through the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Idaho:

In Boise, you can float the Boise River.  (Some people even surf it, but we just float!) You can park your car at Ann Morrison Park and catch a bus. For a few dollars, the bus will take you up the river and drop you off at Barber Park. Last time we paid $2 per adult and they didn’t charge me for the kids. At the drop off point, there’s air available and you can inflate your raft or tube. You can also rent a raft or tube where they drop you off. I recommend using a raft because this river is extremely cold. It takes about two hours to float back down to the park. There are two small drops so you will have to hang on to your kids a few times.

Oklahoma:

Float the Washita River

In Oklahoma, in Chickasaw Country, you can float the Washita River. Washita River Floats will take you up the river and drop you off for a 4 mile float. It will take between 2.5 – 4 hours depending on how the river is moving.

Oregon:

There are several rivers that you can float in Oregon, but we tend to stick to the same one. We float the Sandy River near Troutdale, Oregon. Start at Dabny State Park and pull out at Lewis and Clark state park. You do have to pay to leave your car in both of the parks. The last time we went it was $5 and they took credit cards.

Texas:

Schlitterbahn

For the most part, there are shuttles available along popular Texas rivers. In Texas, the only legal access points are where bridges cross a navigable river. Keep this in mind if you’re doing it yourself and not using a shuttle service. The tube rental/shuttle companies are fairly cheap and make the whole thing super easy.

In San Antonio, you can float the Comal or Guadalupe River. Near San Antonio in Bandera is also the Medina River that can be floated

In San Marcos, you can float the San Marcos River.

In Austin, you can float the Barton Creek Greenbelt. There are no shuttles or tube rental outfits here.

In the Dallas/Fort Worth area, you can float the Trinity River.

Best Places to go Tubing in Texas

Virginia:

Most people float the South Fork of the Shenandoah River in Shenandoah Valley. Virginia has a no drinking in public law, so leave the booze at home.

Washington:

Yakima River Canyon is a popular place to float near Yakima, Washington. – Start at Umtanum for a three-hour float to Roza. Leave one car at Roza, this is where you will pull out of the river. It will likely cost $5 per car to park.

As a travel writer with two decades of exploring the nooks and crannies of the United States, I’ve seen firsthand the magic that happens when grandparents and grandchildren bond over new adventures. If you’re looking to create unforgettable memories with your grandkids, here’s my curated list of the top 26 places to vacation in the United States with grandkids.

1. Orlando, Florida

Sea World Orlando

Traveling to Orlando, Florida, with your grandchildren can be an enchanting experience, as this city is famously tailored for family adventures. Known as the theme park capital of the world, Orlando offers a magical blend of entertainment and wonder that delights both young and old.

Theme parks like Walt Disney World and Universal Studios are a must-visit for their array of attractions catering to all age groups, from thrilling roller coasters to enchanting character experiences.

Beyond the theme parks, explore Orlando’s other family-friendly offerings like the Orlando Science Center, Gatorland, or a relaxing day at Discovery Cove.

Remember to schedule downtime to enjoy Orlando’s sunny weather, perhaps with a day by the pool or a stroll through the beautiful Leu Gardens.

Accommodations in Orlando range from budget-friendly hotels to luxury resorts, many of which offer family suites and kid-friendly amenities.

Dining in Orlando is an adventure in itself, with a variety of options from themed restaurants to casual eateries.

2. Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming

Embarking on a journey to Yellowstone National Park with your grandchildren offers an extraordinary opportunity to connect with nature and each other. This iconic park, renowned for its geothermal wonders and abundant wildlife, is a living classroom where every trail and geyser tells a story. When planning your trip, prioritize key attractions like Old Faithful, the Grand Prismatic Spring, and the Mammoth Hot Springs. These natural marvels are not only visually stunning but also provide a hands-on learning experience about geology and ecology.

Wildlife viewing is another highlight; with a bit of luck, you might spot bison, elk, or even a bear, from a safe distance. Tailor your activities to the ages and interests of your grandchildren – younger ones might enjoy shorter hikes and ranger-led programs, while older kids could be up for more challenging trails or even a night of camping under the stars.

Don’t forget to pack essentials like comfortable walking shoes, weather-appropriate clothing, binoculars for wildlife viewing, and a camera to capture those memorable moments. Dining options within the park range from picnic spots to full-service restaurants, allowing for flexibility in your schedule.

3. Washington, D.C.

The National Zoo, another part of the Smithsonian, is a fun and free attraction that grandchildren will love. Be sure to visit the interactive exhibits at the Spy Museum and the engaging displays at the National Children’s Museum, which are specifically designed for younger visitors.

When planning your itinerary, consider including a leisurely boat cruise on the Potomac River for a different view of the city. Dining in D.C. is easy with numerous family-friendly restaurants and the chance to try different cuisines.

History enthusiasts will appreciate a visit to The Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza, which provides insights into the life and legacy of President John F. Kennedy. While some of the content may be more suitable for older grandchildren, it’s an important part of American history to share.

For a taste of classic Texas culture, consider attending a rodeo show at the Mesquite Championship Rodeo, where you can experience live bull riding, barrel racing, and more. It’s a unique and thrilling spectacle that showcases the cowboy culture Texas is famous for.

Dallas is also known for its barbecue and Tex-Mex cuisine, so be sure to indulge in these local flavors at family-friendly restaurants throughout the city.

Want to take your teenagers on vacation? But you do not want to listen to them cry and moan the entire time? Save yourself from the endless complaining by selecting a destination, they won’t rebel against!

At this point, I’ve traveled extensively with my teens and tween and unfortunately, I know firsthand how stressful things can suddenly become because they are not having a good time on the trip. There are few things worse than a moody teenager on vacation that does not want to participate in any of the activities.

For a while, I gave up and let my oldest kid sit in the hotel room while the rest of us had fun, but eventually, I realized I needed to change the type of trips we were taking. Our trips needed to be way more exciting and physically active, especially if they’ve been stuck in the car on a road trip. With these two things in mind, here are my picks for the top US vacation for teens and tweens.

Top 9 Destinations for Teens and Tweens in the United States

Oahuimg 2610

Oahu is an epic place to take tweens and teens year-round. The weather is consistently good and there is much to do, especially if your family enjoys water sports. Some suggested activities in Oahu that teens will likely appreciate are:

If possible, I highly recommend staying at Disney’s Aulani Resort and Spa. This resort has a teen program that your kids will actually want to go to. They get to participate in physical challenges, take animation classes, learn to play the ukulele, have parties just for them, and more. While your kids are off doing their own thing, you have peace of mind knowing that they are safe and having fun.

See our Oahu Travel Guide to help you plan your entire trip! If you are staying in Waikiki check out our 4 Days in Waikiki itinerary.

Kauai, Hawaii is also fantastic if you want something less mainstream.

Vailimg 1946

Whether you visit in the summer or in the winter, tweens and teens will love Vail, Colorado.

In the summer, teens can zip line and adventure through multiple ropes courses at Epic Discovery up on the mountain. Plus, there are other activities like horseback riding, white water rafting, and mountain biking.

During the winter, tweens and teens can spend their time skiing and snowboarding across the massive mountain. Vail has free public transportation that’s easy to use, allowing kids to have a little independence roaming around on their own.

See our Vail, Colorado Travel Guide to help you plan your trip or our 4-Day Vail Itinerary. Our favorite place to stay in Vail is Sonnenalp Hotel.

Universal Orlando

Universal Orlando

Universal Orlando houses many of the best roller coasters in the United States and has two extensive Harry Potter areas. Teens and tweens will love riding all the intense roller coasters. If your kids are like mine and want to ride the same roller coaster over and over, consider purchasing an Express Pass. This line pass will allow you to bypass almost every line there is in all three of the parks, which means there will be plenty of time to ride everything at least twice.

Recently, Universal Orlando added a water park, Volcano Bay. There are rarely any lines and you do not have to cart around your own raft or tubes for the slides. They’ve made using the water park easy, and with teens and tweens, the easier the better!

A nice plus is the city of Orlando, because when you are done hanging out at Universal, Orlando has lots of other things to do. Kids of all ages will get a kick out of taking a Wild Florida airboat out on the swamps and seeing alligators. Oh, and there’s always Disney World

Las Vegas

Bellagio Fountain in Las Vegas

Las Vegas is not somewhere most think to take teenagers, but it is one of the most visited tourist destinations in the United States and there’s lots to do for all ages. Give the kids a thrill at the indoor skydiving facility or zip lining off the Rio casino at VooDoo Zip.

Other fun things to do include Gameworks, the massive indoor gaming facility, rocking climbing out at the Red Rocks, ATVing, and hanging out at some of the incredible hotel pools. The Wet N’ Wild in Las Vegas also has some extreme water rides. Teens will also like most of the Cirque Du Soleil shows in town. You can currently get Cirque Du Soleil discount tickets up to 50% off one of their shows in Vegas.

For more recommendations on planning a trip to Vegas with kids, see my article: Tons of Activities for Teenagers in Las Vegas.  Here is a sample itinerary: Five Days in Las Vegas with Kids, our extensive Las Vegas Travel Guide, and our hotel recommendations 11 Best Kid-Friendly Las Vegas Hotels.

San Antonio

San Antonio

San Antonio, Texas is jammed packed with activities. They have two major theme parks, Six Flags and Sea World, not to mention one of the most extensive water parks in the world, Schlitterbahn. The nice thing is, teenagers can basically run off and do their own thing in all of these theme parks. Even along the River Walk, kids can go explore all on their own. While they shop around, parents can take a break over a drink and enjoy the River Walk in a slightly more grown-up way.

San Antonio also has a fantastic zoo, but you will want to skip it if the temperature is over 100 degrees outside. Instead, lather on the sunscreen and go float down the Comel River or Guadalupe River.

In San Antonio, I recommend staying at Hotel Emma.

Plan your entire trip with our San Antonio Travel Guide.

Panama City Beach

Bay Point Resort Panama City Beach
Panama City Beach

Another teen favorite in Florida is Panama City Beach. The beach has soft, powdery, white sand. It isn’t as big as many of the beach towns, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t a lot to do.

Go mini-golfing and go-carting, spend the day at the beach, or shop around at Pier Park. Spend one day bopping around Scenic 30A, where you will find tiny beach towns like Seaside or Rosemary. Renting some bicycles is a perfect way to explore this area. Another interesting spot worth venturing out to is Sandestin’s Baytowne Wharf. Here, families can indulge in boutique shopping, zip-lining, ropes courses, an arcade, and unique eateries.

Use our Panama City Beach travel guide to plan your entire vacation.

Bend, Oregon

Kayaking in Sunriver, Oregon near Bend, Oregon
Kayaking in Sunriver, Oregon near Bend, Oregon

Bend, Oregon is another destination that is fantastic in the summer and in the winter. Year-round they have some of the best off-roading in the state!

During the summer, families will get a charge out of kayaking, white water rafting, and hiking. If your kids have never white water rafted before, take them down the Big Eddy. They will get a small taste of major rapids without being tossed around too terribly. Nearby, in Sunriver, there is a small water park and a little village to shop in.

During the winter you can ski and snowboard on Mt. Bachelor, and there’s an outdoor ice skating rink in Sunriver.

Read our Bend, Oregon Travel Guide to help plan your family vacation. Tetherow Lodge is our favorite place to stay in Bend.

NYC

NYC with teens

There are a lot of things to do for this age group in New York City year-round. During the winter season, everyone can ice skate for free in Bryant Park and shop at all the little shops that are set up temporarily. Plus, you can witness the acclaimed Rockettes performing and many other Christmas shows.

All year long, visitors can enjoy the major landmarks and attractions here, like seeing the Statue of Liberty or visiting Ground Zero. Once kids are age 10 and up they are old enough to go through the September 11th Memorial, and old enough to appreciate, or at least sit through, a Broadway show.

We’ve been to NYC more times than we can remember. Check out our New York City Travel Guide to help you plan your own epic NYC getaway! I’ve also put together a 3-Day NYC Itinerary with Teens and a Mother Daughter New York City Weekend Getaway guide.

Palm Springs, California

Omni Rancho Las Palmas

Take teens on an adventure trip in Palm Springs with activities like four-wheelers or Jeep tours. Despite it being almost 100 degrees outside all three of my kids loved going on a Jeep tour of the San Andreas fault. Families can hike out at Coachella Valley Preserve or take the Palm Springs Aerial Tram up to Mt. San Jacinto State Park to hike in cooler temperatures.

I recommend staying at Omni Rancho Las Palmas near Palm Springs. They have several swimming pools and a lazy river.

Use our Palm Springs Travel Guide to help you plan your family vacation.

Conclusion

This list could undoubtedly keep going with the abundance of diverse destinations found across the United States, but hopefully, these 9 are enough to get you started on planning a successful trip with your teens!

Get Travel Insurance

Unfortunately, there are a lot of things that can go wrong on any trip. Be prepared for the worst with travel insurance. We use Travelex or Safety Wing (often cheaper).

Book Flights

I use Skyscanner to find flights. I use it so much, I wrote an entire guide to finding cheap flights with Skyscanner! Another option for finding deals is FlightHub.

Book a Place to Stay

I recommend using Expedia.com or Hotels.com for most hotel bookings. I prefer to book directly with Marriott when I stay there because of their excellent military discount.

If you prefer staying in a vacation rental instead, I recommend VRBO. If you are looking for a hostel, I use HostelWorld.

Choose Activities and Tours

To find great activities in any area I use Viator. If we are visiting a city with lots of popular attractions I always check CityPass, PogoPass, and GoCard to see if they have discount cards available. Groupon also tends to have a lot of local travel deals.

When I want to book a full-on multi-day tour I use TourRadar. They’ve got fantastic weekly deals. If going somewhere in Mexico or the Caribbean, I use Apple Vacations.

Rent a Car or Get a Lyft

More often than not, Lyft is cheaper than Uber. Use my Lyft link for an $18 credit! For a car rental in any country, I recommend Hertz or Discover Cars.

Save Money on Gas

Upside a free app gets you cash back on gas! Use promo code RV2Q2 to get an extra 15¢/gal bonus on your first purchase.

Get a Visa

I use iVisa to get all of my Visas.

If you’ve ever found yourself yearning for a break from the beautiful chaos that is Texas and thought, “You know what I need? A glass of wine, a scenic drive, and someone else’s kids to keep mine occupied,” then buckle up. The Texas Hill Country near San Marcos offers a whirlwind of vineyards, tasting rooms, and vino-filled delights that promise to deliver all the Texas-grown grapes, friendly staff, and award-winning wines your heart (and Instagram) could ever desire. Ready to taste the Texas Hill Country’s finest?

The Hill Country’s Greatest Grapes & Scenic Drives: From San Marcos to Wine Paradise

Whether you’re into big reds, refreshing whites, or want to get fancy with a charcuterie board, this area has it all—and more. Ready? Pour yourself a glass (no judging) and let’s explore.

1. Driftwood Estate Winery

Driftwood Estate Winery

Perched high on a bluff, Driftwood Estate Winery gives you views so breathtaking you might just forget you’re in Texas. Sip on their different wines crafted from the best Texas-grown grapes, and if you’re lucky, you’ll catch some live music while you soak it all in. Driftwood Estate is the spot for exclusive access to the true heart of the Texas Hill Country. Between the award-winning wines and the equally award-winning views, it’s practically impossible not to have an unforgettable experience here. Located at 4001 Elder Hill Rd, Driftwood, TX 78619.

2. Duchman Family Winery

Duchman Family Winery

Is a wine-tasting trip even complete if you didn’t indulge in a bit of Italian flair? Duchman Family Winery in Driftwood (yes, Driftwood is that lucky) brings you Italian varieties with a Texas twist. This spot is the “hidden gem” for private events and special occasions, but also casual tastings with the friendliest staff around. The Duchman’s Sidecar Tasting Room offers charcuterie boards, so you can feel extra sophisticated while pairing good food with even better wine. It’s a great place to impress a date, your in-laws, or maybe even yourself. Located at 13308 Ranch to Market Rd 150, Driftwood, TX 78619.

3. Wimberley Valley Winery

Wimberley Valley Winery

Looking for a unique vibe? Wimberley Valley Winery’s cozy, rustic vibe offers one of the most unforgettable experiences near San Marcos. Known for its laid-back tasting room, this winery serves up local wines that are both delicious and Instagram-worthy. Whether you’re into Texas wines or simply here to relax, this is the place to sip, savor, and stock up on bottles of wine to take home (you know, for when family visits). Located at 2825 Lone Man Mountain Rd, Driftwood, TX 78619.

4. Fall Creek Vineyards

Fall Creek Vineyards

Next up is Fall Creek Vineyards, the royalty of Texas wineries. It’s a short drive from San Marcos, and yes, the scenic route is 100% worth it. Special discounts are often available on their wines (hint: check the events calendar), so you can splurge on an exclusive tasting without selling your firstborn. Grab a charcuterie board, toast to Texas’s finest wine, and soak in that warm Hill Country vibe. Located at 18059 Ranch to Market Rd 1826, Driftwood, TX 78619.

5. Dry Comal Creek Vineyards

Dry Comal Creek Vineyards

A fan favorite in New Braunfels, Dry Comal Creek Vineyards is here to make sure you have an unforgettable experience. They’re known for offering private events and special wine tours that showcase the Texas Hill Country American Viticultural Area (yes, it’s a real thing). You’ll find a selection of wines, including Italian varieties and dry wines, which they lovingly create with their own wine process. It’s a great way to explore Texas wines while learning a thing or two (or at least pretending to). Located at 1741 Herbelin Rd, New Braunfels, TX 78132.

7. Salt Lick Cellars

Salt Lick Cellars

Salt Lick Cellars in Driftwood is the place for BBQ and wine aficionados. Yes, you read that right—BBQ and wine, together in harmony. There’s live music, Texas hill country wines, and, of course, BBQ to die for. The atmosphere is as warm as the brisket, and there’s no better pairing than smoked meat and the best Texas wines. Located at 18300 Ranch to Market Rd 1826 UNIT C, Driftwood, TX 78619.

For the Full Experience: Wine Tours Galore

For those of you who believe one winery is simply not enough (which, let’s be honest, is the entire reason you’re reading this), a wine tour is the best way to see all these gems in one go. Many providers offer tours that include transportation, scenic drives, and even custom stops, so all you have to do is sit back, sip, and let someone else do the work.

A Few Final Tips for the Texas Hill Country Wine Scene

Here’s a little secret: fall is prime time for wine tasting in the Texas Hill Country. Between cooler temperatures, special discounts, and exclusive events, you’re in for an unforgettable experience. Check each vineyard’s events calendar to see what’s happening, snag those special discounts, and prepare for a Texas wine tasting adventure that even Napa can’t top.

So grab your friends, an empty suitcase for wine bottles, and a designated driver—or better yet, a wine tour bus—and make the most of these scenic vineyards. After all, a day in Texas wine country is the ultimate “me-time” escape, no kids required.

Over the years, I’ve been blessed to travel extensively with my girlfriends. Whether for a destination bachelorette party, divorce party or just a weekend to get together and catch up I’ve been all over the place with my friends. Here are some of my favorite girl’s trips, including a few all-inclusive girlfriend getaways

Extraordinary Destinations for a Girlfriend Getaway

Let’s face it, some destinations are more memorable than others. Here are four stunning destinations that have a little bit of everything like epic views, one-of-a-kind experiences, incredible food, and more.

Oia Santorini
Oia Santorini

Greece

If you can go anywhere, go to Greece and visit at least two of the islands. My two favorites are Santorini and Mykonos.

In Santorini, you can enjoy world-renowned sunsets in Oia, lounge on unique beaches like the Red Beach, and dabble in the electrifying nightlife in Fira.

In Santorini, staying in a cave is a must. There are hundreds of little whitewashed caves burrowed into the side of the mountain and staying at one is a one-of-a-kind experience. If staying in a cave is too expensive, consider staying one night in a cave and then moving to a cheaper hotel for the other nights. We stayed in the Ethereum Luxury Cave

Over on the island of Mykonos, friends can party all night at legendary clubs like the Toy Room and Ling-Ling by Hakkasan. During the day, you can bop around Mykonos city to do some one-of-a-kind shopping or head to one of the many gorgeous beaches to enjoy a lazy day of lounging.

In Mykonos, you should stay in Mykonos City or at a beach. If you prefer the beach, I recommend staying down at Plati Gialos.

San Antonio Girls TripSan Antonio

San Antonio has it all. They have exceptional restaurants with amazing food, excellent shopping, swanky hotels along the river walk, and happening nightlife. My go-to place to stay with girlfriends is Hotel Emma, one of the top boutique hotels in the world. My second recommendation would be Mokara Hotel and Spa because it’s right on the riverwalk, and the spa was fantastic! For a long list of San Antonio recommendations, see my article: San Antonio Guide.

Bachelorette Party in Savannah
Bachelorette Party in Savannah

Savannah

Savannah is a picturesque city full of history, and the food is absolutely phenomenal. While you are here, shop along the waterfront at the famous River Street Market Place, dine at incredible restaurants like Paula Dean’s Lady and Sons restaurant and Belford’s where celebrities often dine, and of course, hit up a spa. If everyone is up for some nightlife fun, Savannah has a popping club scene down at City Market. I recommend renting a large historic home with your friends and make sure it has a pool, ’cause it gets hot down there. If you have time, head out to Tybee Island to enjoy the beach!

salt water pool at El Dorado RoyaleRiviera Maya

Riviera Maya, Mexico is situated just north of Playa Del Carmen and it is filled with luxurious all-inclusive hotels. Here you and your girlfriends can completely unwind.

For those that can afford to splurge, there is Grand Velas, an all-inclusive resort with a plush spa, upscale dining, and butler service to take care of everything little thing you may need. You can read our full Grand Velas review.

For those with a tighter budget, there is El Dorado Royale, where almost every room has an ocean view and they offer butler service as well. They had food so good my friend and I still talk about it!

If you decide you want to leave the resort Playa Del Carmen is a short taxi ride away. Here friends can enjoy both shopping and nightlife. Here are 12 activities near Riviera Maya.

New York CityNew York City

New York City never disappoints. You and your girlfriends can shop until you drop, catch award-winning shows and eat fancy meals. If you have your heart set on seeing a specific show be sure to buy tickets in advance. Be sure to end at least one night at Ayza Chocolate Bar and book the penthouse at the Row NYC. There is so much to see in do in NYC check out our guide to help you place your entire trip, New York City Travel Guide or our Mother Daughter New York City Weekend Getaway.

Party Getaways

There’s plenty of time for grown-up girls’ getaways, but every now and again you want to let loose. Here are a couple of spots where you can keep the party going long after the sun goes down! Granted, all of the places mentioned here could be a party destination should you choose to make it.

AustinAustin, Texas Bachelorette Party

Austin, Texas has exploded over the last couple of years and there’s a good reason why. With well over 60,000 college students attending the University of Texas, including my daughter Eden, there are a lot of bars.

6th Street is the go-to party street. The street is closed off for pedestrian traffic only, making it easy to bounce from one bar to the next. There’s live music all over the place. If 6th Street is too intense, head one street over. On 5th street, the vibe is a little less rowdy and there are a lot of great rooftop bars.

If you want to take a break from the bar scene, try an area wine tour, go float the river, or visit one of the area springs to cool off! No matter what you do, have BBQ

In Austin, we recommend staying at The Line or renting a sweet VRBO.

Las Vegas

vegas dress
Vegas Baby!

Las Vegas is one of the top party cities in the world and everyone in your group will have fun dancing at night at packed clubs while famous DJs spin away. By day, friends can relax at the spa and lounge by the pool. My favorite place to stay with friends in Vegas is the Cosmopolitan or a VRBO. Here’s a list of our favorite VRBO Las Vegas Vacation Homes

For a list of recommendations, see my article: Las Vegas Girlfriends Getaway.

BangkokFind out what the top two Rooftop bars in Bangkok are

The nightlife in Bangkok is banging. (See what I did there?) They’ve got some of the most phenomenal rooftop bars in the entire world. Plus, the most famous party street in the world, Khao San Road. While you are there you must make time to see the sights and eat the incredible food. I recommend staying at Banyan Tree or at Fraser Suites.

Spa Getaways

Everyone deserves to be pampered once and a while. Why not take a spa trip with friends? You can enjoy long gourmet meals together, splurge on decadent spa treatments, and just take a break from the world. I recommend taking a spa trip to an all-inclusive getaway, especially if you’re a mom. Everything is done for you, which allows you to completely unwind. Whatever spa you decide to visit make sure they have a substantial hydrotherapy circuit.

Puerto Vallarta

Hotel Mousai

Puerto Vallarta is a fantastic city with rich culture, fantastic food, and lots of activities. Over the years it has gotten better on every level, so if it’s been over a decade since you visited it’s definitely worth going back. My favorite place to stay in Puerto Vallarta happens to also be my absolute favorite hotel in the world, Hotel Mousai. Their spa was out of this world and the rooftop pool is spectacular.

Punta Canaimg 4407

Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic often flies under the radar, but it’s an ideal place for a girlfriend’s getaway. The beaches are gorgeous, there are lots of fun things to do, and the food is unique. My favorite place to stay is Dreams Onyx on the adults-only side. If you want the spa plus the party, stay at Breathless. The pace is slow in Punta Cana, allowing you to fully relax.

Cancun

Live Aqua Cancun

Cancun could have gone under the party place, but what I enjoyed so much when I was there was not the party scene it was the spas. Almost every large resort has a pretty spectacular spa. My favorite place to stay in Cancun is in the resort zone at adult’s only all-inclusive Live Aqua Cancun. They do have a spa, but I recommend a different one. My favorite spa is Coral Beach Gem Spa located inside the Grand Fiesta Americana Coral Beach resort.

Cabo is really ideal. For those on the West Coast, it’s super easy to get to and like most touristy places in Mexico, they’ve got it all. Fun excursions, elaborate all-inclusive resorts, killer food, and more. When I went with my friends we stayed at Paradisus. It was wonderful, but next time we will stay at Garza Blanca. Here is our Los Cabos Girlfriend Getaway to help you plan a fabulous trip.

Wino Getaways

There are few things in life better than catching up with your girls over a bottle of wine. Here are some wine-focused getaways everyone in your group will enjoy. If you want to visit an area with lots of wineries these are my top picks.

Portland Area

Brooks Winery
Brooks Winery

If food and wine are your top priorities head to Portland, Oregon,  where the foodie scene just keeps getting better and better as local award-winning chefs and winemakers continue to push the limits. Plus, the wine scene has exploded just outside of Portland in Hood River and Willamette Valley. In addition to good food and wine, they have a vibrant music scene and stunning gardens worth touring. For more food recommendations in Portland see my article: Best Things to Eat and Drink in Portland.

Fredericksburg

Das Peachhaus Winery Fredericksburg

For a low-key girls’ weekend filled with sweet Texas wines and boutique shopping, Fredericksburg is an excellent choice. This quaint German Texas town is full of wineries and independently owned shops and restaurants. Das Peach Hous has lots of area wines you can try and the property is beautiful. Visit the pond out back for a great photo opportunity. Other wineries you should visit are Messina Hof, Wedding Oak Winery at Wildseed Oak, and Fiesta Winery.

Fredericksburg, Texas
Silver Creek Bar & Grill in Fredericksburg, Texas

For a German lunch or dinner, eat at the Silver Creek Beer Garden and Grille. They almost always have live music. For a more upscale dinner, try Navajo Grill. At night you can grab a beer at Hondo’s on Main and listen to some live Texas rock. I recommend staying at Hoffman Haus or one of these: 10 Unique Places to Stay in Fredericksburg, Texas. To place your entire trip check out: Fredericksburg Girls’ Trip: Wine, Dine, and Shop Till You Drop.

Napa ValleyGirlfriends trip in Calistoga, California

I suppose everyone knows that Napa Valley is the place to go for a wine trip. I recommend staying in Calistoga, that’s where Dawna and I stayed for her birthday. Calistoga is a small city known for hot springs, mud baths, and of course amazing wineries. Stay at the Solage Resort, they’ve got a spa, multiple hot pools, excellent food, loaner bikes, and it’s close to lots of wineries. Be sure to visit Davis Winery, it blew our minds.

7 Best Napa Valley Wineries

11 Best Napa Wineries for Families with Kids

Finger LakesWineries in the Finger Lakes

The Finger Lakes region of New York is bursting with wineries. You could spend several days in this area and never run out of wineries to visit. Some of my favorites are Montezuma Winery where you will want to sample their award-winning Diamond wine, Glenora Winery where you can try a fizzy pomegranate wine, and Belhurst Winery where the inside of the castle alone makes it worth the stop.

For a beautiful place to stay with a stunning garden, stay at Mirbeau Inn and Spa. As you plan your winery route be sure to make your way down to Watkins Glen State Park for a phenomenal hike.

Conclusion

This list could easily keep going because let’s face it when you are with friends any place is a good destination! This list gives you a lot of ideas to start planning your own girls’ trip.

Other places that are always fun that I didn’t include, but they came close to being in my top choices were Los Angeles and New Orleans. In fact, my next girl’s trip is in New Orleans in a few months with my Odessa girls, so I’ll probably be updating this soon.

The best part about planning a trip with your friends is that it doesn’t matter where you go. When you are with good friends you are guaranteed to have an epic time.

Planning a romantic getaway can be as thrilling as it is daunting. If you’ve chosen San Antonio, Texas, as your love nest for the weekend, congratulations—you’ve picked a city bursting with culture, history, and Texan charm. Below is a perfectly curated itinerary to ensure your days are filled with romance and maybe just a dash of adventure (because what’s love without a little excitement?). From luxurious spa treatments to moonlit ghost tours, here’s how to make every moment count in San Antonio.

Friday: Check-in and Charming BeginningsJW Marriott San Antonio Hill Country

Congratulations on choosing a great place to visit and stay! You’ve just pulled up to the JW Marriott San Antonio Hill Country Resort & Spa by late afternoon, just in time to savor the luxury. (Get here as close to check-in time as possible so you can use the pool and lazy river before heading downtown to the river walk.)

Tonight, make sure you’ve got a reservation at Boudro’s, a wonderful steakhouse on the River Walk where you can sit right along the riverwalk. You don’t want to go too early because it will be hot and you don’t want to go too late because you want some daylight at least the beginning of your dinner.

I had one of their phenomenal steaks and my guest had the fish both were great and the bread pudding was a delightful end to the meal. The guacamole is prepared tableside but they make it super chunky and next time we won’t get it.

Boudro's on the River Walk

After dinner, stroll over to San Fernando Cathedral to witness Xavier de Richemont’s enchanting video art projection, “San Antonio The Saga.” It’s free, and frankly, you’ve already paid enough for those cocktails at dinner and parking!

San Fernando Cathedral

After the show, you can decide if you want to call it a night or if you want to continue your evening at a bar along the riverwalk. There’s great nightlife here so it will be easy to find something to do.

Although this itinerary is built around staying at the JW Marriott in Hill Country I know some of you may want to stay in town. On the river walk I recommend Mokara Hotel and Spa and nearby at the Pearl I recommend Hotel Emma

Saturday: From Sidecars to Jazz Bars

Kick-off your day with a breakfast at the hotel. The hotel breakfast is a buffet so it won’t take long to eat.

At 10 AM, you’re scheduled for a fun sidecar tour (because you booked it in advance), meeting at Jardin Restaurant. Sounds romantic until you remember you’re sharing this tiny vehicle with helmets that definitely ruin your hair. JK, they are not that bad and the side cars are adorable and make for great photos. San Antonio Botanical Garden

Post-tour, enjoy strolling through the Botanical Garden until 2 PMish—because nothing says love like pollen and possible sneezing. The gardens are sprawling and I think it’s quite romantic especially the little area behind the rose garden. Bring a selfie stick or travel tripod cause this is a great place to get ‘couple photos’ together.

Lunch today is a late one at Jardin just outside of the Botanical Center. Here you can dine on a variety of options. I went with mainly Greek food. (Yes, Eden was with me. I continue to have the majority of my romantic experiences with my kids or alone!)

Jardin at the Botanical Garden in San Antonio

Post-lunch, recharge, and relax or explore; your choice, but we suggest saving some energy.

Sometime between 4 PM – 6 PM have a wine tasting at Re-Rooted, an urban winery, because nothing enhances romance like a deep discussion over a perfect glass of wine. While you are there check and see if the owner is there, Jen Beckmann. Her wine background is fascinating and she can tell you so much about the wine you’ve decided to try and the unique artwork displayed on each bottle. ReRooted Winery in San Antonio

Evening plans could include the casual Freight Fried Chicken at the Pearl or one of the more upscale restaurants at the Pearl followed by a jazz concert at Jazz, TX. They have two shows a night so make sure to book the one that works best with your schedule. Freight Fried Chicken at the Pearl

@meaganwristen Jazz TX is such a fun place in San Antonio to enjoy a live #jazz show. Its located in the Pearl area. #SanAntonio ♬ original sound – Meagan Wristen

Sunday: Spa, Golf, and KayakingJW Marriott Hill Country Golf Course

Start with a spa or golf morning at the resort. Spa for the sensible and golf for the brave. JK, that’s just what we happened to do. My super handsome guest wanted to golf and I wanted to hit the spa. So I went one way and he went the other. He gushed about the course. I don’t golf much but according to him it’s excellent.

The spa opens at 9 am on Sunday so I suggest booking the 1st appointment of the day. Your spouse may want to head out even earlier to golf to beat the heat and since it will likely take longer than the spa. The spa has a hot tub, aromatherapy room, saunce, and outside it’s own private pool and hot tub.

Lantana Spa at JW Marriott Hill Country

For brunch or an early lunch, grab a quick bite if you’d like at La Panadería Bakery Café. It’s not fast food but it’s really good and super quick. There are several locations around the area.

Kayaking the River Walk in San Antonio

Once you’ve polished off your quick brunch go kayak the river walk! That’s right you can kayak on some parts of it.  Enjoy an hour of paddling along the Museum Reach of the San Antonio River Walk. Kayaking is easy and there’s not a lot of river traffic in this area. When you check in they will be specific about where you can paddle back and forth too, so there’s no issue that you will go too far or get lost.

After you are done kayaking treat yourselves to a late lunch at Southerleigh at Pearl. Their southern comfort food like fried green tomatoes is perfect after all your paddling. Also, their margaritas are the best in San Antonio, in my opinion. Southerleigh at the Pearl in San Antonio

This afternoon you can take a well-deserved nap or, if you’re feeling ambitious, whip out that CityPass you may have purchased and hit some attractions. It includes admission to top attractions like the San Antonio Zoo and the Alamo—because nothing spells romance like historical battlefields. We hit the zoo and the animals were so active I couldn’t believe it! Two bears got in a fight and it was the best thing ever.

Range Steakhouse on the San Antonio Riverwalk (1)

Once you’ve woken from your nap or finished off your afternoon sightseeing head to Range on the riverwalk for an awesome dinner. One of the best parts of being in San Antonio is the food scene and the Range is definitely included in this. Everything we tried here was amazing. Devil's Whiskey Distillery in San Antonio

After dinner roll yourself out of Range and cap off your evening at Devil’s River Distillery with a whiskey flight, and live music. If you are lucky you might be able to score a tour. It’s short but interesting. They make quite a few different whiskey’s so plan to not drive anywhere after spending a little time here!

If a whiskey distillery isn’t something you are into, conclude your night with a ghost tour by RJA Ghost Tours instead. After all, what’s more romantic than bonding over potential paranormal sightings? Just remember to hold hands—you know, so you don’t get lost, or something spookier. Our tour guide was a massive weirdo but the tour was interesting and they have those ghost devices to help you talk to them which adds a layer of unexpected fun.

Wrapping Up Your San Antonio Romance

Pack your bags and your new memories. Your romantic weekend in San Antonio might have been a bit cliché, a tad adventurous, and possibly haunted, but isn’t that what true love is all about? Safe travels home, and may your next getaway be just as magical, but with less scheduled sidecar rides.

Its spacious rooms, rooftop pool, and comprehensive fitness center offer guests a blend of comfort and convenience.
