The last couple of years we’ve been blessed to go to so many new locations that we’d never been to before. I am one of those people that will go anywhere and try anything and basically love everywhere I go but I know that not everyone feels that way. So narrowing down where I think other families should go to as well was tough. I know that many families can only afford one major vacation a year and sometimes only one major vacation every few years. I’ve factored this in when choosing destinations. All of these will be worth the money you spend to be there and provide you with new incredible experiences. Plus, all of these locations are safe.

Panama

Panama City Panama

Panama is a destination that surprised and impressed me from start to finish. Not only is the Panama Canal fascinating to learn about, it brings in people from all over the world which means the foodie scene in Panama is incredible from Panamanian, Chinese, Peruvian, and more. Besides incredible meals they got a range of activities. One day you can see monkeys and sloths and the next tour Casa Viejo the Unesco Heritage site that’s not only hauntingly beautiful to see but is plentiful in shopping, eateries, and rooftop bars. In Panama City we recommend staying at Bristol Hotel.

Once you are done seeing the city you can head out to the beach. You can choose to stay on the Pacific or the Atlantic or do both! When we went to the beach we stayed at Decameron Panama on the Pacific side. If you prefer the Caribbean where the snorkeling is amazing head to the island Bocas Del Toro or to Casa Cayuco where your stay benefits an indigenous community.

Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka

If you’ve followed MommyTravels at all over the years you already know our entire family loves Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka has it all: a fascinating history with the ruins of ancient fortresses in the sky, stunning beaches, super fast ziplines, Sri Lankan food, and much more. One day you will be on an elephant safari and the next day you will be in the mountains learning firsthand at a tea factory. This one destination has so much to explore that I think you should spend at least 10 days here. Here are a few articles to help you plan a trip of a lifetime.

Gatlinburg, Tennesee

Gatlinburg

Gatlinburg, Tennessee was another destination that I found super surprising. Talk about underrated. In all my years of traveling, no one ever recommended going here. When I did finally go I loved every minute of it. The hiking and fly fishing in the Smokey Mountains is outstanding. If you do not want to go hiking on your own I suggest booking a tour with Smoky Mountain Guides.

The town itself is absolutely charming and you might even see a bear while you are there. For a super fun family day head up to Anakeesta to do a tree top walk, play on their extensive playground, ride a mountain coaster, and much more. Plus, the food is soul-satisfying at pretty much every restaurant in town. For families on a budget the camping options here are extensive. For those that prefer a hotel I recommend staying at  Embassy Suites Gatlinburg Resort.

Belize

Belize was on my bucket list for two decades before I made it there and my goodness it exceeded all expectations. With a perfect mix of adventure, culture, and relaxation Belize is just awesome. With its crystal-clear waters teeming with vibrant marine life, it’s a haven for snorkelers and divers, especially at the world-famous Great Blue Hole. Beyond the sea, Belize boasts ancient Mayan ruins like Xunantunich and Caracol, where history comes alive among lush jungles.

Add in eco-lodges, wildlife sanctuaries, and the warm hospitality of its people, and you have a destination that caters to thrill-seekers and serenity-lovers alike. Whether exploring caves, lounging on pristine beaches, or tasting authentic Creole and Garifuna cuisine, Belize offers an unforgettable tropical escape. I recommend staying at Naia Resort and Spa in Placencia Belize, their spa is incredible.

Nevis

Nevis is an actual hidden gem. Any time I recommend Nevis the person has never heard of it. From hiking Nevis Peak and relaxing on pristine Pinney’s Beach to exploring historic plantations and dining on fresh, locally sourced cuisine, every moment feels special. Here are 17 Things to do in Nevis.

I stayed at quite a few Nevis resorts while I was on the island and all of them where a completely different experience from the next. With its commitment to sustainable tourism and lack of large-scale development, Nevis lets you reconnect with nature and experience the Caribbean as it was meant to be—authentic, vibrant, and blissfully serene.

Riviera Maya

Paddle boarding at Arte Hotel

The Riviera Maya area just south of the super popular Cancun is gorgeous and more low key. If you want a perfect beach vacation head here. In 2024, I found myself down here 3 separate times each time staying somewhere different. What they all had in common was that I had the best time each time I was there.

There’s so much to do in the area from cenotes to adventure parks to expansive beaches to Mayan Ruins. Plus, the resorts here are massive. You can stay at an all-inclusive like Xcarte Arte or Grand Palladium Kantenah Riviera Maya or at an regular hotel like Vidanta Riviera Maya that still has everything you need.

Western Montana

Hiking in Western Montana

With almost everyone watching Yellowstone, Western Montana easily makes the list. Montana is just as beautiful as the show depicts it to be. Even more so in person. While here you have to stay at a ranch and get your cowboy on. There are many to choose from and I’ve stayed at two I can recommend: High Tail Ranch and Alpine Falls Ranch. The High Tail Ranch even has a few days a year that you can pay to help herd Bison! Also while here you have to go fly fishing (often included in your ranch stay), go hiking, and visit a hot spring.

La Paz, Mexico

Riding ATVs in La Paz, Mexico

La Paz, Mexico, stands out as a top destination for 2025, offering a unique blend of stunning natural wonders and cultural vibrancy. Located along the Sea of Cortez, it’s a paradise for ocean lovers, where you can swim with whale sharks, kayak through turquoise waters, or explore secluded beaches like Balandra. On land, the city charms visitors with its art-filled Malecon, authentic Mexican cuisine, unique hotels, and a relaxed atmosphere.

La Paz also serves as a gateway to many eco-adventures, making it an ideal destination for travelers seeking both relaxation and excitement like us. Whether you’re chasing sunsets on an atv or diving into marine adventures, La Paz is the perfect blend of culture and coastal magic.

Germany’s Romantic Road

Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Germany

When Eden and I were in Germany we ended up changing our plans after randomly coming across the Romantic Road in Germany when we went to Rothenburg ob der Tauber. (Pictured above.) We were both immediately mesmerized by what we were seeing. That’s why this is the perfect destination for 2025, offering a unique escape into the heart of Europe.

This route winds through enchanting medieval towns, rolling vineyards, and historic castles, making every stop feel like stepping into a storybook. From the iconic Neuschwanstein Castle to the charming streets of Rothenburg ob der Tauber, the journey is a feast for the eyes and soul. Whether you’re exploring cobblestone alleys, indulging in traditional Bavarian cuisine, or cycling along scenic paths, this region is a dream destination that blends history, culture, and breathtaking landscapes into one unforgettable adventure.

Turkey

Pasabag Valley Cappadocia

Turkey offers an unparalleled mix of history, adventure, and natural beauty that captivates visitors of all ages. From the magical hot air balloons of Cappadocia to the thermal travertine pools of Pamukkale, and the ancient ruins of Ephesus to the vibrant bazaars of Istanbul, every stop is a blend of cultural richness and jaw-dropping scenery.

Whether you’re exploring underground cities, splashing in turquoise waterfalls, or wandering the cobbled streets of Antalya’s Old Town, Turkey seamlessly combines learning with fun. Add in delicious kid-approved cuisine and warm, welcoming locals, and Turkey is easily a bucket-list destination.

We hope that where ever life takes you in 2025 it’s the best vacation ever. If you end up taking one of our recommendations tell us about it in the comments below!

Pack your bags, ladies—it’s time for a girls’ trip that will have you trading heels for hiking boots, and your glass of wine for, well…another glass of wine—but this time, it’s earned after a full day of horseback riding, fly fishing, and off-roading in the wild beauty of Western Montana. And the best part? You can fly directly from Dallas-Fort Worth to Missoula. So no layovers. No airport sprints. Just a straight shot to adventure.

Where to Stay

Stay at a ranch in Western Montana like Alpine Falls Ranch

You know the kind of trip where you’re debating between two equally amazing places to stay, and it feels like choosing between chocolate cake or cheesecake? That’s what you’re facing with Alpine Falls Ranch and High Tail Ranch. Either way, you win.

Alpine Falls Ranch

Alpine Falls Ranch

Alpine Falls Ranch is your spot if you want rustic luxury with panoramic views that make you wonder if you’ve just stepped into a postcard. The kind of place where you can throw your boots on the porch and relax in the outdoor hot tub after a long day of adventuring. The ranch sits on hundreds of private acres, so it’s you, your girlfriends, and the open sky. Maybe some deer. Or the occasional bear, but most importantly their adorable highland cows living here.

High Tail Ranch

High Tail Ranch

High Tail Ranch, on the other hand, is perfect for those craving a cozy, cabin-style escape. It’s a little more off-the-beaten-path, but if you’re ready for some serious seclusion with a side of adventure, you’re in the right spot. Picture mornings spent horseback riding and evenings gathered around a firepit laughing until your sides hurt. The ranch is all about relaxation and rejuvenation, but with an active twist—because you’re not the type to sit still for too long. We were lucky enough to visit during the bison round-up which is quite exciting. It happens once a year and for the right price guests can participate!

Horseback Riding

Alpine Falls Ranch
Photo from MommyTravels.net

Is it even Montana if you’re not on a horse? Saddle up, ladies. Whether you’re an experienced rider or just someone who’s watched Yellowstone one too many times, horseback riding in Montana is a bucket list must. At both ranches, you’ll find horses that are as friendly as they are eager to show you around. Ride through meadows, forests, and mountain trails that will make you question why you don’t live here year-round.

Hiking

Hiking in Western Montana
Photo from MommyTravels.net

Western Montana’s hiking trails are no joke. From casual strolls to more challenging treks, you’ll get views that will make your Instagram followers swoon with envy. Not to mention, you’ll burn off last night’s campfire s’mores (maybe). So, throw on your best “I’m an outdoorsy person now” outfit, and don’t forget to pack a water bottle.

Fly Fishing

Fly fishing the Gallatin River near Big Sky, Montana

No, you don’t need to be a professional angler to enjoy fly fishing in Montana. With rivers as clear as the sky above, you’ll be casting lines into waters that are famous for trout. Guides are available for beginners, and for anyone who thinks they know what they’re doing but maybe actually doesn’t. There’s something incredibly peaceful about standing in the middle of a river, fly rod in hand, waiting for that perfect bite. Plus, it’s a great excuse to wear waders without looking like you’re trying too hard.

Off-Roading

High Tail Ranch Girls Trip
Photo from MommyTravels.net

Off-roading in Montana isn’t just a mode of transportation—it’s a lifestyle. Whether you’re behind the wheel of a Jeep, ATV, or whatever vehicle is ready to tackle the rugged terrain, you’re in for an adrenaline rush. The best part? Montana’s dirt roads come with mountain views, fresh air, and the occasional mud-splattered selfie. Because let’s be real—if you don’t get dirty, did you even go off-roading?

Missoula: The Perfect Launchpad for Adventure

Missoula, Montana

Flying in and out of Missoula makes your Western Montana girls’ trip almost too easy. With direct flights from DFW, you can roll out of bed, grab a latte, and be on a plane faster than you can say “mountain retreat.” Missoula itself is worth a stopover—think college-town charm meets rugged Montana wilderness. Whether you’re grabbing a bite downtown or taking in the local art scene, you’ll quickly realize that this is more than just a gateway to adventure. It’s part of the adventure.

In Missoula, I recommend staying at the Residence Inn, grabbing a cocktail at Plonk Missoula, and having dinner at the 1889 Steakhouse.

Post-Adventure Relaxation: Wine, Hot Tubs, and Fireside Chats

High Tail Ranch
Photo from MommyTravels.net

After a day filled with horseback riding, hiking, fly fishing, and off-roading, there’s only one way to end the night—relaxing with your girls, a bottle of wine, and the stars overhead. Alpine Falls Ranch has a house with a hot tub that practically begs for post-adventure soak sessions, while High Tail Ranch has all the fire pit vibes you could ever want. Either way, it’s the perfect backdrop for recounting the day’s adventures, laughing about that time you almost fell off your horse (almost), and planning tomorrow’s escapades.

Final Thoughts

Quinn Hot Springs

Western Montana offers the kind of girls’ trip that makes you forget about the everyday grind and reminds you of what it feels like to be free and adventurous. It’s the perfect blend of outdoor activities and relaxation, all set in one of the most stunning landscapes in the U.S. So grab your best girlfriends, book those direct flights to Missoula, and get ready for a Montana escape that you’ll be talking about for years. And if you have extra time, pop into Quinn Hot Springs for a soak.

Travel planning with teens is challenging. Then add in the remote location of Yellowstone National Park, and parents planning an adventure to Yellowstone National Park with teens face the challenge of crafting a fantastic vacation without breaking the bank!

This comprehensive guide will share how we created our adventure and had some amazing “forced family fun”!

Yellowstone National Park, the nation’s first national park, is an amazing park that spans three states Wyoming (96%), Montana (3%), and Idaho (1%). The tremendous geographic diversity of this park is nearly impossible to explain. From nearly barren geyser basins to the most beautiful waterfalls on the planet to a snowy mountain peak of nearly 8,000 feet, this national park has something for everyone!

Planning your adventure is critical unless you have unlimited PTO and can spend all summer in Yellowstone. It’s even more important when traveling with teens who rely on an internet connection for survival!

Yellowstone Family Adventure RecapPorcelain Basin at Norris Geyser Basin in Yellowstone

If you’re short on time but eager for the highlights of exploring YNP with teens, here’s the breakdown:

  • Don’t skip the iconic spots like Old Faithful and Grand Prismatic, with pro tips for extra fun.
  • Navigate Yellowstone’s expansive landscapes with the handy Guide Along app.
  • Choose camping in Yellowstone for an authentic experience.
  • Balance teen independence with family activities, ensuring everyone has a blast and stays safe.
  • Optimize travel times for fewer crowds and maximize your summer break for a full park experience.
  • Prioritize safety and respect for the park’s wildlife and natural beauty, following all park guidelines.

Traveling to Yellowstone with Teens

When we started our RV journey in the fall of 2020, visiting Yellowstone National Park was near the top of our bucket list. Initially, we thought we’d go out for a long weekend like the kid’s fall break.

Then, we looked at a map did some quick calculations, and realized from our homebase in Louisville, KY, Yellowstone was over 1,700 miles…each way. With our average driving speed of 60 to 65mph when towing our camper, we realized Yellowstone is a long way from home!

We decided to “build up” our RV traveling skills before setting off on an EPIC journey like visiting Yellowstone. This gave us plenty of perspective to plan our entire Western States travel plan for our summer vacation.

10 Things to See and Do with Teens in Yellowstone

1. Old FaithfulOld Faithful

Perhaps the most iconic geyser in YNP because of its regularity, size, and accessibility. Old Faithful seems cliche, but turned out to be a family favorite. The beautiful rainbow certainly helped solidify Old Faithful as our favorite geyser.

Pro Tip: Stop in at the visitor center and ask the Ranger for some recommended hikes. Sometimes Rangers share “off the beaten path” recommendations that create amazing memories!

2. Grand Prismatic from Fairy Falls Trail Overlook

The boardwalks around Grand Prismatic are nice, but an aerial view is truly necessary to witness the beauty of the Grand Prismatic. Everyone seems to know about Fairy Falls, so visitors won’t have the overlook to themselves, but you still get amazing vistas!

3. Grand Canyon of YellowstoneGrand Canyon of YNP

Amazing! From the famous artist point to Lookout Point. Our teens like Lookout Point better than Artist Point because we had the view from Lookout Point to ourselves. Don’t skip out on the short but steep walk to the Lower Falls of the Yellowstone River.

4. Norris Geyser BasinNorris Geyser Basin

This was one of my favorite thermal basins. I appreciated the stark white landscape and the turquoise pools of water. In my mind, these were breathtaking!

5. Firehole FallsFirehole Falls

Without the Guide Along app, we would have missed this fantastic waterfall entirely. Firehole Canyon Road is a neat one-way road that winds through the canyon. The drive was beautiful. A giant osprey nest was situated close to the falls overlook, so we got an up-close look at this remarkable bird!

6. Travertine Terraces

At a distance, the travertine is so white it looks like snow! Logic takes over and rules that out because it’s hot outside (we visited in the summer). This feature was an area we rushed through because of a looming thunderstorm. We would enjoy spending more time in the Mammoth Hot Spring area on our next visit.

7. Mud VolcanoMud Volanco Basin

Grab your nose plugs because this area is super stinky. The Mud Volcano is neat because it’s bubbling mud from the earth. The thermal features of the park range from nearly heavenly like Grand Prismatic to downright yucky…Mud Volcano. This highlights the diversity of the park.

8. Old Faithful InnOld Faithful Inn with Clock (2)

The largest timber frame hotel in the world with a massive creek stone fireplace is a site to see. Moreover, we found the Old Faithful Inn a wonderful “throwback” to a time that had passed when hotels were filled with tourists enjoying each other’s company over a glass of iced tea or a cocktail. We recommend staying a night in this glorious Inn if your budget can handle it!

9. Gibbon FallsGibbons Falls

Gibbons Falls is a fantastic cascading waterfall that is directly on the way from West Yellowstone to the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone. A large parking lot is conveniently located next to the falls making for a quick stop on the way to the Grand Canyon. Our teens found this to be an excellent way to start our second day in YNP!

10. Drive the Grand Loop(s)

YNP includes a northern and southern grand loop that travels past most of the park’s notable features. We found the Guide Along app super valuable as we drove through the park. The loops provide plenty of opportunities to see Bison and other animals. Make sure you pack plenty of patience because these roads get crowded, and traffic moves slowly!

Helpful Resources for Families Traveling to Yellowstone

  • Old Faithful Education Center – Take advantage of the visitor center and the expertise of the park rangers. Park Rangers love YNP and want all visitors to have amazing adventures. Stop in for a few minutes and learn from the experts.
  • Yellowstone National Park History Film – In the visitor center, a video plays throughout the day that explains the history of YNP. Our entire family thought watching this video was a great use of 30 minutes. Plus, we dodged a rain shower while watching the film.
  • Plan ahead – Planning for snacks, lunch, drinks, weather changes, etc. can mean the difference between a fun and a terrible day to remember. The weather changes frequently. During our trip in June / July, we were rained on each day. We had our rain jackets handy, and we kept on enjoying our adventure.

Pro Tip: We had the thermal features to ourselves in the rain! All the other explorers started melting and ran for their cars! Keep a rain jacket handy and enjoy smaller crowds!

  • We liked the Guide Along app. This app helped us understand exactly what we saw while driving through the park. It was like having a travel guide in our car in many ways.
  • Dirt In My Shoes provides terrific itineraries. Ash, the founder, is a retired Park Ranger who helps guide visitors through the parks to have the best experience possible during crowded seasons!

Getting to YellowstoneYellowstone with Kids

Visitors can take planes, trains, OR automobiles to Yellowstone National Park. Once at Yellowstone, you need transportation or a guide service. This park is huge!

Automobiles + Driving

We love driving to our destinations. Although driving takes more time than flying, driving gives us a deep appreciation for the size of our country and varying geographic regions.

Traveling with teens on a multi-day journey to Yellowstone meant we needed to plan cool places to stop. We stopped in the Black Hills of South Dakota for about 5 days, serving as a “warm-up” to our Yellowstone adventure. We even camped one night in Billings, Montana, to cross Montana off our list of states. (11 Family-Friendly Things to Do in Billings, Montana)

On the road, Sara makes sure the kids download movies, tee up their summer reading (thank you, Audible), include plenty of snacks, etc. Sara scoped out several podcasts from Dirt In My Shoes that provided a lot of history about Yellowstone, Grand Teton, Badlands, etc. This kept Mom, Dad, and the teens happy while in the truck for several days!

Planes

With six airports near Yellowstone, traveling via airline is easy. Although we did not fly on this trip, we learned on a trip to Glacier National Park that flying as close to the destination is super important.

If your budget and trip align, the West Yellowstone airport may be an excellent option. If not, flying into Bozeman, Montana or Jackson, Wyoming are likely your best bets. Both of these airports should have daily flights from major hub airports.

Plan on renting a car at the airport for your adventure OR having a shuttle service to the park. We recommend having a car in Yellowstone because the park is so massive!

Trains

Amtrack makes traveling to West Yellowstone possible via train from major cities like Chicago, Salt Lake, Denver, San Francisco, etc. Sara and I would not consider that type of trip with our teens. The novelty of the train would fade quickly!

Pro Tip: A car or truck is vital in Yellowstone National Park. The park is nearly 3,500 square miles. An E-Bike likely doesn’t have enough charge to get you all the way around the north or south loops!

When is the Best Time to Visit YNP with Teens?

Like most families with teens busy with high school, sports, friends, work, etc., we had to “squeeze” our Yellowstone adventure in during the summer. We visited at the end of June and the start of July.

The park was busy. With patience and lots of planning, we had a fantastic time and saw all the major attractions.

We had friends who visited in early June, and they reported smaller crowds because a  number of schools were still in session. Visitors will find smaller crowds after Labor Day as well.

Pro Tip: The West Yellowstone entrance is super busy. Arrive early (e.g., before 7 AM), and you will sail right through the entrance. If you arrive at 9 AM, you will be waiting in a long line to enter the park.

Most visitors leave Yellowstone around dinner time, so plan to stay after 5 or 6 PM, and you will be rewarded with smaller crowd sizes. As a bonus, sunlight is visible until about 9 PM in the middle of the summer!

Yellowstone doesn’t close at night, so go at night for an entirely different experience! We did not out of concern for animals roaming the roads in the dark! And we were tired from exploring all day!

Camping at Yellowstone National ParkLone Star Geyser in Yellowstone

Thanks to its enormous size, nearly 3,500 square miles, numerous camping options exist. Yellowstone offers 12 developed campgrounds and over 2,100 “back-country” campsites inside the park. Keep in mind these campgrounds are not resorts and will lack many amenities you find outside the park, like WiFi, swimming pools, modern bathhouses, etc.

Fun Fact: 3,500 square miles is LARGER than Rhode Island (1,045 square miles) and Delaware (1,954 square miles) COMBINED!

We recommend checking out West Yellowstone and its developed campgrounds and RV parks for more luxurious camping. We stayed in Grizzly RV Park and found this park incredibly nice and well cared for. Our teens appreciated the strong Starlink signal, clean bathhouses, and the other amenities of Grizzly RV Park.

Other campgrounds in West Yellowstone include KOA West Yellowstone, Pony Express RV Park, Wagon Wheel RV Campground, Fox Den RV Park and Campground, and many more!

Cabins and Hotels at Yellowstone National Park

If staying in a hotel or cabin is more your style, Yellowstone offers a number of hotel options inside the park. These include Old Faithful Inn, Lake Yellowstone Hotel, Canyon Lodge and Cabins, Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel, and Roosevelt Lodge Cabins. These locations fill up quickly, so plan early. We have heard cell signal is spotty, so plan accordingly and communicate with your teen in advance to avoid a nasty surprise when you check in!

Visitors will also find a number of hotel options near the entrances, with West Yellowstone having the most choices and amenities (e.g., restaurants, shops, etc.) nearby.

Considerations for Traveling with Teens to Yellowstone

Sara and I have found that traveling with our kids as they have grown up into teens is both more accessible and more challenging. Fortunately, it’s much easier most days than when they were under 5. We have learned it’s essential to keep a few things in mind.

  • Independence – teens are learning to become good decision-makers. We have to set expectations and then let Madeline and Jack figure out how they will meet them.
  • Surprises – Everyone loves good surprises like ice cream, and everyone hates nasty surprises like soggy PB&J sandwiches. We find communication is critical to avoiding nasty surprises. Everyone is happier when Madeline and Jack understand we will leave early and get in some hiking miles!
  • Down Time – Teens need time to recharge. As our energy level wears down, we get cranky. It’s essential to realize cranky people sometimes say things they don’t mean. So have some grace. Recognize the signs of tiredness and give your teens, and parents, some downtime to recharge.
  • Sleeping In – We let the kids sleep in on our last day in Yellowstone. We took it easy, walked around West Yellowstone until lunchtime, and headed into the park. This gave us all some alone time to recharge!

Yellowstone National Park is Not a Petting Zoo: Follow the Safety and Regulations

Yellowstone is an amazing park to be enjoyed by all. It’s a place where visitors can get a feel for the wild without extreme danger as long as they follow the rules outlined by the National Park Service.

Visitors should stay on the boardwalks near thermal features. Keep a safe distance from the animals. Bison are huge and can run up to 30MPH! Crazy!

Please also practice the leave-no-trace principle of taking only pictures and memories and leaving only footprints!Yellowstone with Teenagers

Wrapping Up Our Adventure in Yellowstone with Teens

Visiting Yellowstone with teens was so much more than a vacation; it provided our teens and family a chance to create unforgettable memories in one of the most serene places in America! We came for the geysers and left with an appreciation for how expansive this park is and the vast geological features found in YNP.

Our adventure through YNP illustrated that visiting with teens is an enriching experience for parents and their teens!

Guest Author: Mike & Sara began RV camping in 2020 and instantly loved the lifestyle. We found the thrill of exploring new places, breaking our vacation routine, and crossing off all those “one-day” trips was a blast! At Our Campfire Unplugged, we enjoy sharing our experiences to help fellow travelers live their best lives.

Tip me

Pick a Place to Stay

Not everyone wants to camp in a tent. For those that prefer a cabin, we recommend checking out the cabins on VRBO. If you want a glamping experience check out the amazing glamping options on Expedia! To find good campgrounds in Europe check out EuroCamp.

Rent an RV

I highly recommend renting an RV instead of buying one. I bought one, only to realize I hated it. RVShare has all kinds of RVs you can rent.

Get Travel Insurance

Unfortunately, there are a lot of things that can go wrong on any trip. Be prepared for the worst with travel insurance. We use Travelex or Safety Wing (often cheaper).

Book Flights

I use Skyscanner to find flights. I use it so much, I wrote an entire guide to finding cheap flights with Skyscanner!

Choose Activities and Tours

To find great activities in any area I use Get Your Guide and Viator. If we are visiting a city with lots of popular attractions I always check CityPass and GoCard to see if they have discount cards available. When I want to book a full-on multi-day tour I use TourRadar. They’ve got fantastic weekly deals.

Searching for a bucket list family trip? Consider looking into a dude ranch. From horseback riding and roping lessons to mountain biking and fly-fishing, the ultimate playground awaits you on a dude ranch.

But the ranches in our roundup don’t stop with cool activities. These spots also have gourmet dining, off-site adventures (snow skiing, off-roading, golf), and spas that are vacation draws in their own right. There’s no shortage of big sky, stars at night, and wildlife — you could even see a moose trot through your front yard depending on what state you are in. Many dude ranches are all-inclusive or all-inclusive optional.

Montana is an incredible state with unlimited outdoor adventures. Thanks to public access being such a high priority throughout Montana, everyone can come visit and enjoy the natural beauty.

Day 1: Fly into Billings, Montana

Today fly into Billings and rent a car.

Dinner: Tonight have dinner at the local favorite, Montana Brewing Company. Opened in 1994, Montana’s first Brew Pub features a brewery, full bar, and grill right in the heart of downtown Billings!

You should also grab a cider at The Last Chance. It’s a cool building, and their ciders are great. The Last Chance Cider House Billings, Montana

Stay at the Northern Hotel.

Day 2: Rappelling and Biking

Rappelling in Billings, Montana at The Rims
Rappelling in Billings, Montana at The Rims

Billings has some fun outdoor recreation opportunities. At the rim, you can do rappelling and rock climbing off the sandstone cliffs that serve as the northern border of downtown Billings. Although I don’t mind rappelling, I found it nerve racking to rappel off of a random anchor in the rock. If that is bothersome to you, I would skip this and do the Billings Brew Trail or visit the Yellowstone Art Museum.

Dinner: Tonight have dinner at Walker’s.

For more things to do in Billings, check out 10 Family-Friendly Things to Do in Billings, Montana.

Day 3: LivingstonLivingston, MT

Today you will start your drive. The Yellowstone River runs throughout the state, somewhat along I-94. Leave Billings and follow the Yellowstone River all the way into the park. Along the way, you will make a stop in Livingston. Plan to have either a late brunch here or lunch followed with some afternoon fishing or a scenic drive around the Paradise Valley loop. The Paradise Valley Scenic Loop is a paved, 62-mile “loop drive” that circles through the beautiful Paradise Valley of Montana

Livingston is an adorable little city that looks like it came out of the 1950’s, and it is easily walkable. It is home to lots of ranches, and for such a small town the real estate is expensive. Hunting and fishing are quite popular here, and they’ve got several fantastic art galleries. The Livingston Depot is a restored 1902 Northern Pacific Railroad train station that operates as a museum from about mid-May to early September.  Mark’s In & Out has great hamburgers for just $2.

Stay the night at Chico Hot Springs. This is a full-up resort with a spa.

Day 4: Gardiner, MT

Gardiner was officially founded in 1880, but the area has served as a main entrance to Yellowstone National Park since its creation in 1872. It looks like a town straight out of the wild wild west. Gardiner has lots of lodging for those wanting to go into the national park. Plus, there are lots of rafting companies located here. Wonderland Café & Lounge

Lunch: Have lunch at Wonderland Café & Lounge where they focus on organic & locally sourced food. It is located at 206 Main St., Gardiner, MT 59030.

After lunch: Check out the town and do a bit of shopping, or you can head into Yellowstone. On your way to into Yellowstone, be sure to take time to pull over and see the Roosevelt Arch. Roosevelt Arch

There are more things to do in this area than you might think upon first look.

Day 5: Yellowstone National Park

Today you will dip out of Montana for a bit to visit Yellowstone National Park. While in Yellowstone, there are some must-see stops. In this itinerary, we are rushing through Yellowstone, but I recommend spending a minimum of 3 days in Yellowstone if at all possible.

Mammoth Hot Springs Terraces

Porcelain Basin at Norris Geyser Basin

They have a large sitting area where you can sit and wait for the eruption. Also worth seeing while in the park is Grand Prismatic Springs.

6 Things to do in Yellowstone with Kids

Day 6: West Yellowstone

West Yellowstone is part of Yellowstone Country. Yellowstone Country is smaller than Yellowstone park, but still sprawling. It is a collection of five counties in Montana surrounding the main park.

Breakfast:  Three Bear Restaurant

After breakfast: Visit the Grizzly & Wolf Discovery Center after breakfast where you can see otters, wolves, and bears. They bring out various bears at different times, but you are basically assured to see at least one if not 3 or 4. I saw quite a few during my visit, and kids will get a huge kick out of the otters. The center is located at 201 S. Canyon St., West Yellowstone, MT 59758.

Check into Gray Wolf Inn & Suites located at 250 S. Canyon St., West Yellowstone, MT 59758.

After you get checked in you have some free time to explore West Yellowstone. There are lots of cute shops.

Day 7: Big Sky

Head to Big Sky, home to fantastic skiing in the winter with 5,850 acres of ski terrain which spreads out from the summit of 11,166-foot. In the fall, there are golden aspen and cottonwood trees,  and fly fishing for feisty trout and bugling elk.

Lunch: Along the way have lunch at Horn & Cantle located at 750 Lone Mountain Ranch Road, Big Sky, MT 59716. You will need to make sure they are open and not closed for a private party. If possible at all make a reservation.

After lunch: Go for a local hike. There are a lot of places to hike in this area including Ousel Falls Park.

Beehive Basin Brewery

After your hike, pop into microbrewery Beehive Basin Brewery to try some interesting beers. They do not have any food available, but you are welcome to bring in your own food. They are located at 245 Town Center Ave., Big Sky, MT 59716. If you are grabbing food to go with you, I highly recommend sandwiches from Roxy’s Market Cafe. Montana Whitewater Zipline

If you have kids with you and do not want to take them to a brewery, head over to Montana Whitewater Zipline instead for some super fun zip lining.  Be sure to make an advance reservation for ziplining at Montana Whitewater Zipline. The activity takes about 2 hours start to finish. You will need closed-toe shoes for this activity. It is located at 63960 Gallatin Road, Gallatin Gateway, MT 59730.

Day 8: Fly FishingFly fishing the Gallatin River near Big Sky, Montana

Today will be an absolutely incredible day. If you’ve never fly-fished, I promise you it will be an extremely rewarding experience. My first time to fly fish was here and it remains one of the best experiences I’ve ever had. (Not to brag but I caught 15 fish. Okay, I am bragging.)

Breakfast: Kick off your day with an early breakfast, ideally you have breakfast at your hotel if it is available. If your hotel doesn’t offer breakfast stop by Hungry Moose Market & Deli for breakfast instead. It’s located at 52 Big Sky Resort Road, Big Sky, MT.

After breakfast: Head over to Gallatin River Guides for fly fishing. It is located at 47430 Gallatin Road, Gallatin Gateway, MT 59730. Their guides are top notch and know the area intimately ensuring you catch some fish. If you have kids with you I recommend not crossing the river. Even for an adult it can be difficult. A child will fall in.

Lunch: After fly fishing depart for Three Forks and have lunch at Bar3BBQ.Bar 3 BBQAs a Texas girl, I must say I was very impressed. I often have extremely low expectation for bbq outside of Texas. Needless to say, I was pleasantly surprised. Bar3BBQ is located at 119 E. Main St., Belgrade, MT 59714.

Madison Buffalo Jump State ParkAfter lunch: Learn some history, and take a hike if you like at Madison Buffalo Jump State Park. At Madison Buffalo Jump State Park you can learn about some of the techniques Native Americans used to capture buffalo. The park is located at 6990 Buffalo Jump Road, Three Forks, MT 59752.

Other great places to eat while in Bozeman

Fielding’s – Casual upscale dining with American fare conveniently located just off of West Mendenhall Street, Fielding’s is the namesake of prolific Bozeman architect Fred Fielding Willson, who designed the original Armory building in 1941. Montana’s local flavors are infused into every dish thanks to partnerships with local farmers and ranchers such as Wickens Ranch and Daniels Meats & Sausages. Intentional ingredients are paired with attention to detail when it comes to signature menu selections such as pan-seared Sweet Potato Gnocchi with brown butter and fresh sage, as well as Lamb Shoulder Navarin presented with pomme puree and French petit poix, which is a medley of vegetables including peas, fava beans and pearl onions.

Enjoy drinks here like “The Romeo” a spirit forward, Larceny bourbon based drink with Campari and Averna Amaro or “The Secret Garden” made with the restaurant’s house-made strawberry-balsamic gastrique with elder flower liqueur, basil, and lemon.

Tune Up – A basement Bar & Live Music Venue located in the basement of the Kimpton Armory Hotel, but it’s far from a speakeasy. The cozy whiskey and beer bar is located in the space where the Armory band used to practice and will pay homage to its musical roots with regularly scheduled live performances. The back bar features a library of whiskey that ranges from locally made Bozeman favorites to rare and hard to find spirits. Tune Up has a wide range of craft beers from Montana microbreweries including hometown Bozeman Brewing Company. Classic and creative cocktails also don the menu from the Poms of Wrath to the Light My Fire, a sweet and spicy concoction that brings all the elements of a good concert in one glass. The cocktail features house infused pineapple-habanero George Dickel Rye Whiskey, Demerara Sugar, Peychauds Bitters and served in a rocks glass over a large ice ball.

Sky Shed – Rooftop Lounge & Pool with a View
Set nine stories above Bozeman’s historic downtown, Sky Shed is an elevated social experience where guests can soak up the scene and enjoy boozy delights and light bites all year long. Unique indoor and outdoor spaces transform with the seasons, perfect for basking in the sun or getting cozy by the fire.

Sky Shed’s extensive cocktail program showcases a creative collection of drinks with flirty garnishes. Local breweries support the beer program, while the carefully curated collection of rosé and sparkling rounds out the elegant wine list. Sample Rosé all Day on Sundays with $20 bottles or visit the Sky Shed mid-week for Golden Hour happy hour special from 4-5 p.m. Monday through Friday including $1 off all draft and cocktails as well as $7 house wines by the glass.

When you think of Montana you imagine scenes from A River Runs Through It or the Horse Whisperer, locations that are breathtakingly beautiful. As mentioned in previous posts, that’s not necessarily what you’ll find in southeastern Montana (or specifically, Billings). Though we live in a less picturesque locale, we are close enough to mountains and majesty to get our scenic fix whenever we have a free afternoon or day. One such place to travel is Red Lodge. Located at the entryway of the Beartooth Pass, Red Lodge is a main point of entry into Yellowstone National Park

Fun Things to do in Red Lodge, Montana

While the town isn’t very large – you won’t find even a single stoplight – there are still a number of fun things to do while visiting.

Red Lodge MountainRed Lodge Mountain

During the winter months, Red Lodge Mountain is an ideal place to hit the slopes. Bigger destinations like Big Sky or Bridger Bowl in Bozeman draw the bulk of the tourist population, so while RLM is a great place to ski you’re more apt to find locals or visitors from Billings or another close city. The mountain boasts up to 70 slopes of varying levels of difficulty to suit skiers from beginner to advanced. With a restaurant and bar at the base of the mountain as well as the Midway Chalet halfway up the mountain, you’ll find a variety of foods and beverages to quench any appetite as well as a place to rest your legs after a hard day on the slopes.

Main StreetCandy Emporium sign in Red Lodge Montana

Main Street Red Lodge is comparable to what you’d find in small resort towns across the country. As you stroll along, you’ll find boutique shops, outdoor equipment stores, dive bars, upscale restaurants, rock shops, and a fun-filled candy store. We always have fun perusing the different shops and trying out the local fare, the last time we went we enjoyed some giant slices of pizza at Red Lodge Pizza Company and some delicious tacos a local favorite, Mas Taco.  Red Lodge is keeping up with the times with the addition of local farm to plate style food and a local brewery, Red Lodge Ales, which has locally-brewed beers on tap.

Bear Creek Pig RacesRed Lodge Pig Races

I recently had the chance to revisit the pig races at the Bear Creek Saloon. Located just 7 miles from Red Lodge, it’s a quick trip for a unique experience. We decided to go for dinner (it’s located behind a steakhouse) but you can go for just the races and a cold beverage. Betting on the winning bovine isn’t the same as you’d find at common racetracks, instead, your name goes onto a squares-style board (think Super Bowl betting) and if your name matches the winning pig you win some cold hard cash. There’s also a small playground there for the kids (if adorable running piggies isn’t fun enough) and a lot of outdoor seating ala picnic table.

Hiking, Biking, and Fishing

Red Lodge has a vast number of trails in the surrounding areas. Depending on the level of difficulty, you can find just about anything to suit your comfort level. We’ve spent many days fishing at Wild Bill Lake, a stocked pond surrounded by an easily accessible trail. It’s a nice way to guarantee fishing success, even though the fish are tiny and you have to throw them back. It’s an easy way to have some family fun.

Yellowstone National Park and the Beartooth Pass

Red Lodge is the northern entrance of the Beartooth Pass, a scenic highway leading into to Northeastern Entrance of Yellowstone National Park. The distance from Red Lodge to the entrance to YNP is only 68 miles but the drive takes much longer because of the multiple switchbacks and scenic opportunities. We’ve made the trip over a number of times because it’s breathtaking beauty, wildlife opportunities, and easy access to Billings.

Yellowstone Wildlife Sanctuary

The Wildlife Sanctuary is a nonprofit organization set up to house injured or domesticated wildlife. Visiting is a great opportunity to see bears, bison, wolves, and other wild animals up close without the fear of attack. With the number of tourists that continue to approach wildlife to either touch them or get a photo opportunity in YNP, the sanctuary gives a great option to take a photo or learn more about the animals without fear of injury. The sanctuary even offers ‘up close and personal’ opportunities so you can have a unique experience with a wild animal and a great story to tell your friends and family.

Beartooth Rally and Annual FunBeartooth Rally

Red Lodge has a number of fun holiday-inspired activities throughout the year. We’ve visited for the Fourth of July parade where the kids received candy from various parade entries and sodas from the Pepsi truck. We also got to see a man ride by on a large bull, not an everyday occurrence. The town also hosts a Christmas stroll, a rodeo, Oktoberfest, and is the home of the Beartooth Rally, a large motorcycle ride over the Beartooth Pass. The rally is an annual occurrence featuring hundreds of motorcycles, concerts, and various events throughout the course of a fun-filled weekend.

When traveling through Montana it’s amazing the different small towns and locations you’ll come across. Red Lodge is one of my personal favorites because it’s easily accessible and has so much to offer. My kids continue to ask for overnight trips to stay at Rock Creek Resort to swim in the pool and go on a day hike. Our favorite restaurant, Old Piney Dell, is located on Rock Creek directly in front of the hotel and offers amazing food, wine, and atmosphere. Whether winter or summer, Red Lodge really is a lovely small town with a lot of Montana to offer.

When you think of Montana you typically think of majestic mountains and abundant wildlife. However, Billings is not your stereotypical Montana city.

Located in the plains of Montana, the Beartooth mountains are visible about 60 miles west of the city, but for the most part, it’s relatively flat and not comparable to the movies and pictures that have made Montana famous. The exception is that Billings is nestled beneath the Rimrocks, or the Rims, which are geological sandstone formations that outcrop portions of the city. They lend a uniqueness and topographical contradiction that make Billings beautiful, and the welcoming feel of the local population makes it a great place to live and visit. While visiting, or on a day off with the kiddos, here are some ideas in and around Billings to have some fun and maybe even learn something!

Billings isn’t located in the heart of the mountains, but there are still a number of local trails that offer a getaway from the city. Phipps Park, Norms Island, Four Dances and Two Moon Park are all dog-friendly trails that offer a respite from the daily grind.
