If you are wondering if Belize City is worth visiting, you’re in the right place. I’ve been to the city a few times during my “corporate life” to visit hotels, so I have some insights to share.

In my personal opinion Belize City isn’t a must see. But if you’re like me you’ll still want to go and see for yourself and form your own opinion.

That is why in this post I’ll tell you why I don’t think it’s worth a dedicated visit but I will also share where to stay and what to do to make the most of your time, in case you will still want to (or have to) go. I’ll also highlight some of Belize’s best destinations as better alternatives to Belize City.

A Brief Look at Belize City

Belize City Airport

Belize City is home to the country’s largest airport, Philip S.W. Goldson International Airport, making it a natural entry point for many visitors. It has a rich colonial history, visible in its architecture and landmarks, and serves as a hub for exploring nearby attractions like the Altun Ha Mayan ruins or the cayes.

However, the city itself can feel overwhelming for those expecting a more relaxed, tropical vibe.

It’s also not very safe for the most part, and there’s nothing charming about it.

I might be a bit biased because, on my first visit to the city, I arrived at the news of a shooting just steps away from my hotel. I realize it was likely a case of bad timing, but still…

Belize City Interesting Facts

Here are a few interesting facts about Belize that are related to Belize City:

  • Belize City, the largest city in Belize, serves as the country’s principal port and commercial hub. As of recent estimates, it has a population of approximately 65,222 residents.
  • Surprisingly Belize City is not the Capital of Belize. It used to be until 1970.. After Hurricane Hattie caused significant damage in 1961, the capital was relocated inland to Belmopan which I find much more appealing and interesting to visit, and definitely safer.
  • Museum of Belize: Housed in a former prison, this museum showcases the country’s rich history and culture, and it may be worth visiting if you have time to spare.
  • Language: Belize is the only Central American country where English is the official language.
  • Population Density: Belize has the lowest population density in Central America, with just 15 persons per square kilometer.

Why Belize City is not worth a visit

As I mentioned before I am not a fan of Belize City and in this section I will give you all the reasons why, but I also include a few attractions you may find in case you need to pass by.

Also, keep in mind that Belize City is not a pretty city. It is quite trafficked and chaotic and not the safest. I don’t mean to be negative, just to keep your expectations low. If you are flying internationally, though, you will have to fly into Belize airport, but you can quickly move on to your next destination in Belize, which is actually full of pretty places. More about that later on.

1. Limited Attractions

Museum of Belize

Belize City has a handful of cultural and historical highlights, but these can easily be explored within a single day. Some key attractions include:

  • Museum of Belize: A small but informative museum housed in a former prison. It offers a glimpse into Belize’s colonial past, Maya heritage, and cultural evolution. It’s definitely worth a visit if you have some time to kill. It is situated on Gabourel Lane, close to downtown and within a zone frequented by tourists. The museum is near government offices and other landmarks, which adds a level of security. Daytime Visits: It’s best to visit during the day when the museum is open ( Monday to Friday, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM
  • St. John’s Cathedral: The oldest Anglican church in Central America, built in the early 1800s using bricks brought over as ballast on British ships. While historically significant, the cathedral is small and can be fully appreciated in a short visit.
  • Swing Bridge: One of the oldest manually operated swing bridges in the world. Although not pretty, it’s a fascinating piece of engineering history, but it’s a quick sight, not an activity.

Insider safety tips: You can walk from the Museum of Belize to the Cathedral, pass through the Swimg Bridge during daylight, and stay on the main roads. However, I recommend avoiding jewelry and fancy accessories that would make you a juicy target for pickpocketers.

2. Safety Concerns

Safety can be a concern in Belize City, which is known for higher crime rates than other parts of the country. While many areas frequented by tourists are relatively safe during the day, make sure you follow these safety tips:

  • Avoid walking around at night, in any neighborhood.
  • Cautious Atmosphere: Stay on the alert when walking around during the day and stay in the touristy areas.
  • Use taxis to move around if you feel uncomfortable
  • Don’t wear flashy accessories and avoid wearing luxury brands

3. Urban Environment

Belize City is a bustling urban center that contrasts sharply with the idyllic landscapes that draw most visitors to Belize.

  • Crowded Streets: The city can feel chaotic, with busy roads, street vendors, and a lack of pedestrian-friendly infrastructure.
  • Limited Green Spaces: Unlike other parts of Belize, Belize City doesn’t offer much in the way of parks, nature trails, or scenic views.
  • No Beaches: Despite being on the coast, the city doesn’t have the white-sand beaches or clear turquoise waters that Belize is famous for.
  • It’s not pretty. I didn’t find anything appealing about Belize City that makes it worth a visit.
  • Not for outdoorsy – If you’re seeking a tropical escape, Belize City will definitely not meet your expectations.

Having said that, you can join some tours from Belize City that will take you to amazing places within one hour. Keep reading to find out more about them.

4. Lack of Tourist Infrastructure

Smokeez Seaside Bar and Grill
Photo by Smokeez Seaside Bar and Grill

Although Belize City is the largest city in the country, its tourism infrastructure is limited compared to other parts of Belize:

    • Hotels: While there are a few comfortable options, like Villa Boscardi or The Great House Inn, they cater more to transit travelers than those seeking a luxury or resort experience. You won’t find all-inclusive resorts that are instead scattered around the Belize Cayes and other more isolated destinations.

  • Restaurants: The dining scene is limited, with only a handful of standout options like Smokeez
Seaside Bar and Grill. The variety and quality pale in comparison to what’s available in Placencia, San Pedro, or Caye Caulker.
  • Activities: The city lacks the type of activities that typically draw tourists, such as water sports, wildlife tours, or cultural festivals.

For most visitors, there needs to be more exciting options to justify a longer stay.

What to visit instead

Silk Caye in Belize
Photo by Meagan Wristen | Silk Caye in Belize

Belize City serves as a gateway to some of the country’s most stunning destinations, all of which are just a short trip away. Although it’s not within the scope of this article, I would love to mention some of the most beautiful places in Belize to make up for my negative review of Belize City. Belize as a country is definitely worth your time, especially if you love nature and Mayan History.

You will find many spectacular places to visit, from spectacular archeological sites to natural wonders and underwater treasures like the world-famous Blue Hole.

Here are some of my favorite spots in Belize that you can reach from Belize City.

  • Caye Caulker and San Pedro (Ambergris Caye): These islands offer pristine beaches, crystal-clear waters, and vibrant marine life. They are perfect for snorkeling, diving, or simply relaxing by the sea. Water taxis and flights from Belize City make them easily accessible.
  • San Ignacio: Nestled in the jungle, this town is the starting point for exploring ancient Mayan ruins like Xunantunich and Caracol, as well as activities like cave tubing, zip-lining, and hiking.
  • Placencia: A laid-back beach town with stunning coastline, great seafood, and access to the Belize Barrier Reef.

These destinations will make the perfect Belize Itinerary, allowing you to experience Belize’s natural beauty and cultural richness far better than Belize City does.

How to move around and from Belize City: Transportation Guide

Belize hops

Belize City’s primary value lies in its role as a transportation hub. It’s where most international travelers arrive and connect to their next destination using different means of transportation, as follows.

  • Airport: Philip S.W. Goldson International Airport, located just outside Belize City, is the main entry point for visitors.
  • Water Taxis: Regular ferries depart from Belize City to the islands of Caye Caulker and Ambergris Caye, making it a key transit point for island-hopping.
  • Buses: The main bus terminal connects Belize City to destinations like San Ignacio, Placencia, and Dangriga.
  • Car Rentals: Many visitors choose to rent a car in Belize City, and it’s my favorite way to explore the country. Having your own car gives you the freedom to travel at your own pace, make spontaneous stops, adjust your plans on the go, and avoid being tied to a set schedule.

While it’s an efficient hub, most travelers find that Belize City itself is not worth other than a brief stopover.

Daily Tours that you can do from Belize City

If, despite my bad review of the city, you wish to use it as a base to explore the country, you are in luck because there are organized tours that you can join to some interesting attractions that make a great day trip from Belize.

Altun Ha Mayan Site tour from Belize City

If you are interested in the Mayan world, the tour to Altun Ha archeological site is a great option, just an hour from Belize City. This private tour includes hotel pickup in an air-conditioned vehicle and covers entry fees for a hassle-free experience.

You will enjoy a scenic drive through Belize City, passing landmarks like the Baron Bliss Lighthouse and the Museum of Belize, before traveling through rural communities and along the historic Old Belize River.

At Altun Ha, explore the on-site museum and take a guided tour of the impressive ruins, learning about the Maya civilization’s culture and history.

Cave Tubing & Zip Lining Adventure

If you’re up for an adventure, this tour is a blast! You’ll hike through the rainforest (about 20 minutes), then float on a tube through these incredible Mayan caves—it feels like another world. After that, it’s zip-lining time! Flying over the jungle canopy is such a rush, and the views are amazing.

It’s a private tour, so you can take your time, and everything’s covered: equipment, lunch, and even hotel pickup and drop-off. If you’re in Belize City and want an epic day out in nature, this is the way to go!

Lamanai Mayan Ruins and River Cruise

This full-day tour to Lamanai from Belize City is perfect if you’re up for a mix of history, nature, and adventure. You’ll start with a scenic river cruise through the jungle, where you might spot birds, orchids, and even crocodiles. Once you arrive, it’s time to explore one of Belize’s most famous Mayan sites.

Your guide will walk you through the ruins, including highlights like the Jaguar Temple, the Mask Temple, and ancient Mayan palaces. You’ll also hear the howler monkeys in the trees and learn about the incredible history of this ancient city. There’s even a small museum where you can check out Mayan artifacts.

To top it off, you’ll enjoy a traditional Belizean lunch before returning. The tour includes hotel or port pickup and drop-off, so it’s hassle-free and packed with unforgettable experiences!

Conclusion

As you may have noticed, I am not a fan of Belize City, and although you can actually explore some nicer parts of Belize by taking tours from Belize City I still don’t recommend staying there. While Belize City has its place as the country’s largest urban center and transportation hub, it lacks the charm, safety, and attractions that you can find in other parts of Belize instead. Spending a day in Belize City can be worthwhile for exploring its limited highlights, but for a more rewarding experience, your time is better spent exploring the islands, jungles, and beaches that make Belize a world-class destination.

Get Travel Insurance

Unfortunately, there are a lot of things that can go wrong on any trip. Be prepared for the worst with travel insurance. We use Travelex or Safety Wing (often cheaper).

Book Flights

I use Skyscanner to find flights. I use it so much, I wrote an entire guide to finding cheap flights with Skyscanner! Another option for finding deals is FlightHub.

Book a Place to Stay

I recommend using Expedia.com or Hotels.com for most hotel bookings. I prefer to book directly with Marriott when I stay there because of their excellent military discount.

If you prefer staying in a vacation rental instead, I recommend VRBO. If you are looking for a hostel, I use HostelWorld.

Choose Activities and Tours

To find great activities in any area I use Viator. If we are visiting a city with lots of popular attractions I always check CityPass, PogoPass, and GoCard to see if they have discount cards available. Groupon also tends to have a lot of local travel deals.

When I want to book a full-on multi-day tour I use TourRadar. They’ve got fantastic weekly deals. If going somewhere in Mexico or the Caribbean, I use Apple Vacations.

Rent a Car or Get a Lyft

More often than not, Lyft is cheaper than Uber. Use my Lyft link for an $18 credit! For a car rental in any country, I recommend Hertz or Discover Cars.

Save Money on Gas

As winter approaches, our minds cannot help but wander to the most joyful time of the year-Christmas. The very thought of winters without Christmas and cozy festive sweaters may not be appealing at all. Most people live in anticipation of the Christmas season. To indulge in some sweet plum cakes. Listen to lively carols. And enjoy the crisp winter air filled with saccharine tunes and sugary scents.

Spending Christmas time with loved ones is a beautiful way to enhance the enjoyment of this season. A Christmas vacation in that dream place where we can lie cozy under a blanket with brandy cocktails to keep us warm can refuel the soul.

Bruges, Belgium

Bruges, Belgium at Christmas

Twinkling lights. Hot chocolate. And a scenic view. It is what we dream of at Christmas. Bruges will make us feel as though we have been transported to a different era altogether. Its beautiful medieval architecture is considered to be the best in Europe. Enjoy the delicious hot chocolates that are a staple in every café and bask in the Christmas lights’ glow. Straight out of a movie scene, we are bound to have a joyful time visiting this city for a Christmas vacation.

Enjoy a ride on the old-fashioned horse-drawn carriages on the snow-capped roads here with your loved ones. A 30-minute carriage ride where you get to see the major landmarks of the city would cost around 40 euros. Don’t forget to dive deep into the culinary world of Belgium and discover some to-die-for treats.

Nuremberg, Germany

Nuremberg, Germany christmas-market

Drawing over 2 million people a year during Christmas, the Nuremberg Christmas Market is a sight to behold. You will find over 180 stalls packed with trinkets, toys, souvenirs, and more. For shopaholics who love themed (or otherwise) trinkets, Nuremberg is heaven.

Explore the beautiful market in Hauptmarkt after dark to enjoy the Christmas lights. The only acceptable time for late Christmas shopping is if you plan to visit this famous Christmas market. Fans of brandy cocktails can enjoy the mulled wine here.

The Children’s Market is another not-to-miss attraction on a visit to Nuremberg during Christmas. The double-decker carousels and cute kid-friendly shenanigans will add cheer to your little ones. Snack on some spicy gingerbread while exploring the stunning stalls. Every year, each booth competes for the “Stall with the Best Design” award, and hence this place promises the sight of the best of creativity.

The Vatican, Italy (Midnight Mass)

Vatican City

For those who love to embrace their spiritual side during Christmas, the Vatican makes the perfect pick. While the Vatican carries a charm all year round, it blooms during Christmas time. The midnight mass on Christmas Eve, or at noon on Christmas day is incredible and must be experienced. Christmas is unique as you can explore nativity scenes all around the city. Even a short visit will leave you in awe.

The Piazza Navona Christmas Market in Rome shines its brightest during Christmas. You can shop for the best figurines, toys, and gifts from here. The Christmas Eve Mass celebrated at The Pantheon is another unheard attraction of Rome. With its unique candlelight displays and religious prayers, this church offers a mystical experience for visitors during Christmas time.

A Christmas trip to the Vatican sounds incomplete without witnessing the Pope’s annual Christmas day address. Popularly termed Urbi et Orb, this is an event that urges love and peace for the whole world.

Zurich, Switzerland

Zurich, Switzerland

Snow-capped mountains, chocolate boxes, and themed strolls. If this sounds like the Christmas of dreams, then Zurich, Switzerland is the place to experience them. Fight the chill with some rare brandy cocktails, while you enjoy themed walks, rare Christmas markets, and more. For dear ones with a sweet tooth, gift pack a box or two of assorted chocolate.

Enjoy Christmas carols sung by youngsters. Lose yourself into the beauty of the glorious singing Christmas tree at Ward Muhlen Platz. Zurich is a place meant for those who love to take part in cheerful carols, look at the Christmas decorations, and enjoy some hot beverages while listening to carols.

Add a fun quotient for the whole family through candle-making at Burkliplatz in Zürich. For around 20 francs, you can make 4 tall and beautiful custom-made candles. A worth try an activity to make your Christmas trip more memorable.

From pretty sights to beautiful melodies and sweet treats, could Christmas not get any better than this.

Reykjavik, Iceland

Iceland Blue Lagoon
Photo from MommyTravels.net

Witness twinkling Christmas lights paired with Northern Lights in Iceland. That is what adds to the allure of Reykjavik during Christmas. People here celebrate Christmas in varied styles. Being a part of Christmas celebrations here is a great way to immerse yourself in a new culture.

Have fun exploring the 13 trolls legend who leave gifts for kids instead of our beloved Santa. If you are lucky, you may even catch a glimpse of them on the streets. The Christmas market gives ample opportunities to stock up on gifts for your loved ones or yourself.

With some vendors only putting up a stall for a day, the Christmas market looks different each time we visit. Have a wonderful time parsing through handcrafted items. Stay in beautiful and elegant hotels, which adds to the glinting Christmas lights’ scenic atmosphere during ling nights.

Prague, Czech Republic

prague-christmas
Photo from MommyTravels.net

What better way to experience the wonders of Christmas than looking at Prague’s beautiful gothic and baroque architecture? Christmas is enticing no matter where you are. But the twinkling lights of Prague paired with its beautiful architecture makes any trip worthwhile. Even the Christmas markets, which run for a month, have beautiful backdrops that you do not want to miss.

Grab some mulled wine, roasted ham, or sticky pastry, to satisfy your tummy as well. You may be out of luck finding rare whiskey, but you can enjoy the taste of mulled wine as you traipse through the market where tourists and locals indulge in some Christmas shopping.

Also, Prague promised Christmas fun in tons. Grab yourself tickets to The Nutcracker’s annual performance at the National Theatre to have a magical time. Christmas vacation to Prague is hence an exciting way to spend Christmas and to enjoy yourself thoroughly.

Santa Claus Village, Finland

Santa Claus Winter 2018 in Rovaniemi Lapland Finland

Fulfill the lifelong dream of meeting Santa Claus by visiting this place. Visit Finland, where Santa is the most famous resident of them all. It is not just the promise of meeting the jolly old man which will lure you to Finland, though.

Visit the Ranua Wildlife Park where you can coo at baby polar bears, moose, and wolverines. Let your kids have fun trying to bake gingerbread cookies with Santa Claus. They can also have fun learning how to write tier Christmas lists using a traditional quill, or even learning calligraphy. They can participate in Elf school and even look into filling in elf positions at Santa’s post office.

The Berry Nice Day packages start at 77 euros. They let you enjoy the fun of handpicking berries and also teach some basics of making berry-based superfoods. The merriest place during Christmas, Santa Claus Village will feel like heaven on earth for children. If you love the cold a bit too much, you can stay at the Arctic Snow Hotel made out of ice. But do not worry if you are freezing, there are hot tubs and saunas available too. We are wondering whether Elsa is the mastermind behind this spectacular hotel.

Conclusion

7 best places to spend Christmas

The most wonderful time of the year can be made special with the right atmosphere and the right company. Everyone is dying for a vacation, and Christmas is the perfect time to indulge without feeling guilty. Get your loved ones together and spend some time indulging in Christmas traditions in a foreign land.

Although Christmas is a universal experience, the way each culture celebrates them is unique. It can be a fun learning experience for you, and for kids to witness the different ways in which people all over the world enjoy Christmas time.

Whether you love to visit the theatre or only have a love sleeping in and enjoying tasty treats during Christmas, you are bound to enjoy yourself in these places. They promise a lot more in addition to new sights and great food. Once experienced, these places will want us to keep coming back for more.

There are so many reasons to visit Memphis! Admittedly, the top of mind for me was the barbecue and other Southern delicacies, but this gem has so much more to offer.

I was pleasantly surprised to find out that Memphis has a deep history related to the Civil Rights Movement and Blues music. All of these are centered in the downtown area, so that made planning a trip easy. If you have a weekend, you will be able to hit all the historical spots and sample Southern food too in Downtown Memphis.

Recommended by Bernadette of Explorer Chick

1. Listen to Blues musicBlues-trail

Immerse yourself in the music scene and the birthplace of Blues on Beale Street. Anchoring the street is B.B. King’s Blues Club which often has a line. Music can be heard tumbling out from all the venues lining the street.

Scattered around the city are other sites that are important to the history of Blues, like Sun Studio, the Soul Museum, and Blues Hall.

Memphis is also where the Mississippi Blues Trail starts and snakes its way to Mississippi. Along its stops are famous American Soul music venues, museums, and restaurants Blues legends once frequented.

2. Take a deep dive into history and see the connection of Memphis to the Civil Rights MovementI-am-a-Man

It was really interesting to visit the National Civil Rights Museum at the Lorraine Motel. The site is where Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated.

The museum has a set circuit that starts at the ground floor and includes exhibits, a short film, and lots of history about the Black experience in America. It takes about one to two hours to see everything and ends at MLK’s room which has been preserved.

Adjacent to the Lorraine Motel is another building, the boarding house where the shooter was staying and fired the shot that killed MLK. On display are artifacts and theories on why James Earl Ray committed the crime.

I got a refresher on American history and the Civil Rights Movement during my visit, and it is one of the best things I did in Memphis.

The reason why Martin Luther King visited Memphis was to show support for the sanitation workers that were on strike. The plaza is outside the Clayborn Temple, where the workers gathered with their I AM A MAN signs and marched to City Hall.

Today, I AM MAN Plaza has a timeline of the strike and includes details of MLK’s support and eventual assassination, as well as how the strike ended with the workers getting more benefits.

In the center of the plaza is a striking monument that declares I AM A MAN.

3. Try some good, old-fashioned Southern cuisine

Admittedly, I travel to try local cuisines and Memphis didn’t disappoint!

Central BBQCentral BBQ

Across the street from the Lorraine Motel is Central BBQ, one of the best Memphis barbecue restaurants! What I really liked is their different kinds of barbecue sauces – mild, hot, sweet heat, mustard, and vinegar. It brought the smoked meats to a different level. The food is affordable with humongous servings too.

Arcade DinerArcade-Diner

One of the oldest restaurants in Memphis is the Arcade restaurant. It is a classic diner on South Main Street that has been serving locals and tourists since 1919. It even has a fried peanut butter and banana sandwich that is said to be Elvis Presley’s favorite.

The Arcade is a popular movie site too. Jerry Lee Lewis’ biopic Great Balls of Fire, Walk the Line, The Firm, and The Client are just some of the movies filmed there.

Gus’ Fried ChickenGus Fried Chicken

What’s a stop in the South without some fried chicken? Luckily, another Memphis institution, Gus’ Fried Chicken, is also downtown. Aside from the super juicy and well-spiced chicken, you can also try other Southern specialties like fried green tomatoes, fried okra, and chess pie.

4. Start your adventure on the Tennessee Whiskey TrailOld-Dominick

The Old Dominick Distillery recently opened in the city, and they offer tours and tastings. The liquor maker has an interesting history that includes their whiskey recipe lost because of the business closing during The Prohibition Era and found by chance recently by the family. They also have vodka, gin, and souvenirs for sale in their gift shop.

It is part of the Tenessee Whiskey Trail, a group of craft distillers and big-name brands, like Jack Daniels and George Dickel, that are part of the trail that crisscrosses the state. At each stop, you can get a passport stamped and a poker chip as a souvenir. When you fill up the passport, you will receive a special Tennessee Whiskey Trail Poker set.

Fun fact: for a whiskey to be called “Tenessee Whiskey,” it needs to be distilled in Tennessee, filtered through maple charcoal, and aged in charred oak barrels.

5. Walk around Downtown MemphisMemphis-pyramid

The downtown area is surprisingly walkable. And if you like walking, you will be able to get a better feel of the city. Of course, no trip is complete without seeing the mighty Mississippi River. You can start at the Memphis Pyramid, which currently houses a Bass Pro Shop. There is an elevator that you can ride to see the Memphis skyline. It is also the way to go to the restaurant at the pyramid tip and have dinner or happy hour.

Then venture south along Main Street to imagine the bustling thoroughfare that was full of shops and businesses that shipped their goods on the Mississippi.

The Memphis Cotton Museum is a small but informative site that explains the importance of cotton to the region. Their display of cotton prices is so interesting and well-preserved.

Peabody Hotel
The Peabody Hotel photo by Meagan Wristen

The Peabody Hotel is famous for its brunches, so if you want (or need!) a lux meal, then get ready to eat your heart out. It is also iconic because of its Mallard ducks that stroll through the hotel lobby every day at 11 am and 5 pm.

Markers of the Blues trail and other historical facts can be found throughout the downtown area, which makes the walk entertaining and educational. Plus, there is a ton of street art to see and snap pictures of.

There are plenty of kid-friendly activities in Downtown Memphis too:

  • Memphis Zoo
  • Memphis Botanic Garden
  • Pink Palace Museum aka The Memphis Museum of Science & History
  • Memphis Brooks Museum

Where to Stay in Memphis

We recommend staying at Central Station Hotel. Located in Memphis’ iconic South Main District, Central Station Hotel is a one-of-a-kind experience for visitors. A 105-year-old property housed inside an early-1900s train station, the hotel captures the city’s vibrant spirit with stunning mid-century architectural design, captivating local art and a world-class Memphis music experience. The property retains its architectural integrity as the oldest building and remains an active train station, served daily by the City of New Orleans and the local Main Street trolley line.

Other places to inspire your travel lust in Tennessee

If you want to venture out of downtown, there are other cute neighborhoods and even more restaurants to try! Over by the airport is Elvis Presley’s Graceland. Where for a pricey ticket, visitors can walk through the home and property to take a peak into the King of Rock n’ Roll’s life.

In case you have time for an extended stay or road trip, here are other things to do around Tenessee:

Nashville is about four hours away by car, and if you are a country music fan, Lower Broadway or Honky Tonk Highway is a must-visit.honky-tonk-hiway

While you’re in Nashville, try some hot chicken from Hattie B’s. There’s a location in Memphis too. The chicken is battered, fried, and covered in a spicy sauce. How spicy, it depends on what you can handle! I also recommend the pimento mac n’ cheese, it is so good!

smoky-mountainsThe Great Smokey Mountains has all kinds of hiking trails for people who want to see the incredible vistas to hard-core hikers. The national park is nearer Knoxville, about an hour away by car. Better yet, visit Gatlinburg!

The Tennessee Whiskey Trail continues out east into the state, with most of the distilleries centered around Nashville and Knoxville. You should definitely make plans to visit the Jack Daniels Distillery, which is an hour away from Nashville.jack-daniels

Are you ready to travel to Memphis?

These are just some of the five things to do in downtown Memphis and the rest of Tennessee. Obviously, this isn’t extensive to any extent! Where have you been in Memphis that you loved visiting?

Seoul, the bustling metropolis capital of South Korea, is one of the most exciting and dynamic capital cities in the world in my opinion, and having the right travel guide is essential to maximising your time when visiting.

Whether you want to explore the extraordinary food scene, see some live street karaoke in a trendy neighbourhood at night or if you’re more interested in discovering some beautiful palaces, Seoul is jam packed with awesome activities and vibrant places to visit.

Having visited Seoul for two weeks a few years back, I can now appreciate just how important a good travel guide is. So I’ve listed everything you could possibly want to know before visiting Seoul, to ensure you don’t miss out on all the incredible things to do and places to visit in the South Korean capital.

Best Neighbourhoods To Visit Or Stay In

Let’s begin this travel guide with what are the best neighbourhoods to visit or stay in when in Seoul.

Although nowhere near the same size as the likes of Tokyo or New York, Seoul is still made up of 25 districts, which range greatly in terms of size and population.

I wouldn’t worry too much about researching each district, instead, let me recommend to you the best neighbourhoods which are definitely a must visit and are worth staying in as well:

Views of Hongdae

Hongdae: I was fortunate enough to stay in central Hongdae during my visit and I’m so glad I did! I’ll never forget my first evening in this neighbourhood; I was blown away by how youthful and vibrant it is.

Located in the Mapo District in western Seoul, Hongdae is known as a popular student neighbourhood and is full of restaurants, cafes, live music, shops and more. It particularly comes to life after dark when you’ll see countless street performers renditioning to the public.

Itaewon: Known as Seoul’s international district, Itaewon is where you’ll find every type of international cuisine that you maybe won’t find so much in the rest of Seoul. As a result, Itaewon is a popular place for tourists and is one of the best areas for nightlife, with scores of bars and clubs open until the early hours.

Gangnam: Probably the most famous district in Seoul, Gangnam is also the most fashionable, full of upmarket luxury clothes shops, as well as top quality restaurants and nightclubs.

Best Palace To Visit

Gyeongbokgung Palace

What I found truly fascinating about Seoul is how there are so many ancient palaces and monuments literally in the middle of what is such a modern, busy city, which creates a stunning contrast.

There are many historical palaces worth visiting in the city, including five grand palaces, but my recommendation would be Gyeongbokgung Palace. This is the largest and most spectacular palace that was the royal palace for the Josean Dynasty.

Located in northern Seoul, the backdrop of Bugaksan Mountain directly behind the palace makes this palace all the more beautiful to see first hand. An iconic and visually impressive building, learning all about the history behind this 600 year old palace is an absolute must while in Seoul.

Best Food Market

Gwangjang Market

Seoul is honestly a foodie’s heaven and is now one of the top reasons why so many people want to visit South Korea in the first place! But knowing where to go to try some local delicacies is far from straight forward.

My recommendation would be to head to Gwangjang Market, which is known to be the biggest, oldest and best food market with over 200 food stalls.

I visited Gwangjang Market on my first full day in Seoul and it was honestly one of my favourite experiences. The place is really an overwhelming assault on the senses in every direction and you are absolutely spoilt for choice when it comes to Korean food options.

Best Museum

War Memorial of Korea

Seoul is also home to some seriously great museums as well. If you’re short on time in Seoul and have time to just visit one museum, then I would highly recommend the War Memorial of Korea

Housed in a spectacularly large building in the Yongsang District, this museum is dedicated to South Korea’s extremely complex military history. It is made up of six exhibition halls that include an enormous collection of war memorabilia, artefacts, uniforms, screening rooms and lots more.

This is a truly extensive collection and you come away from the museum with a greater understanding and appreciation for Korea’s past.

Best Place For Street Food

As well as food markets, street food is hugely popular in Seoul for both locals and foodie tourists alike.

I can personally recommend Myeongdong, which is a popular shopping district that comes alive at night with countless food stalls selling every type of Korean snack you can imagine, as well as more unusual items that you won’t find anywhere else.

Best Time To Visit Seoul

Taking into consideration the weather, I would personally say that either spring or autumn are the best times of the year to visit Seoul.

With mild temperatures and several popular festivals taking place during these seasons, a trip to seoul in spring or autumn is also cheaper in terms of flights and accommodation. These months are when the city is at its most beautiful and colourful too.

The peak season of the summer months is a costly time to visit and the city can be quite unbearable with high temperatures and more crowds.

Winter time is an interesting and a cheap option too, but be prepared for freezing temperatures and possible snowfall.

Best Views

Views from the N Tower

Having a good understanding of the layout and size of Seoul is very useful to help get your bearings, and there’s no better place to do this than at N Seoul Tower

This is a huge observation tower that is nearly 800 feet tall and features breath-taking panoramic views of the city. Visiting here during a sunset is also a spectacular and romantic experience.

Best Park

Bukhansan National Park entry

After a few days exploring the city you may want to escape into nature to get away from the hustle and bustle of Seoul, which can get overwhelming at times.

I suggest taking a day out of your trip to explore Bukhansan National Park, which is the most visited and popular park in the country and is an absolutely beautiful place to relax in nature.

It’s full of nature trails and temples, so you can choose whether you want to take a gentle stroll or try to climb Baegundae Peak, arguably Seoul’s most famous mountain. This hike takes several hours to complete so you should only consider it if you’re in good physical condition, but the views from the top are so rewarding.

Best Day Trip From Seoul

DMZ

Although there are several top day trips from Seoul to consider – including a day trip to Busan on the south coast, I would recommend a day tour to the fascinating Korean Demilitarized Zone, known as the DMZ.

This is the heavily fortified border between South and North Korea, and taking a tour here was without doubt one of the highlights of my time in Seoul.

A DMZ tour is sure to leave a lasting impression with you, and being able to catch a glimpse of North Korea through binoculars at the observation deck at the DMZ is a truly unique, incredible experience.

Ultimate Travel Guide To Seoul FAQS

Still unsure about visiting Seoul? Allow my to answer some of the most commonly asked questions about this awesome Asian city:

How many days is enough for Seoul?

I spent over a week in Seoul and I felt that was sufficient time to visit all of the top tourist attractions and explore enough of the city to really appreciate and understand the culture.

You can still see a lot of Seoul within just a few days if you’re short on time or money, but I would ideally recommend at least 5 days minimum.

Is Seoul expensive for tourists?

Yes, Seoul is known to be quite an expensive city to visit in terms of hotel accommodation and dining out. But it all depends on the time of year you visit, with plenty of cheap accommodation at decent hotels during the spring and autumn months.

And if you’re on a tight budget then I would recommend visiting some street food markets or local restaurants outside of the big tourist neighbourhoods such as Itaewon and Hongdae.

Is Seoul safe for tourists to visit?

Yes, Seoul is considered to be a very safe city and has low crime rates. Of course, petty crime does occur here (especially in touristy areas), so it’s advised to stay alert as you would anywhere else.

Seoul does experience extreme weather as well sometimes, such as the rainy season which usually occurs from mid-June and lasts for around a month, but there’s not much to worry about in terms of safety when visiting the capital or the rest of South Korea for that matter.

Conclusion: Ultimate Travel Guide For Seoul

So that concludes my ultimate travel guide for Seoul! I honestly can’t recommend a visit to Seoul enough; it is honestly one of the most dynamic, lively and interesting cities I’ve ever visited.

There are so many options when it comes to activities in Seoul too, with fantastic restaurants, historical sites, museums and a lot more.

I hope you’ve enjoyed reading through this Seoul travel guide and are now inspired to visit one of the most fascinating capital cities in Asia and the rest of the world as well for that matter!

Travel planning with teens is challenging. Then add in the remote location of Yellowstone National Park, and parents planning an adventure to Yellowstone National Park with teens face the challenge of crafting a fantastic vacation without breaking the bank!

This comprehensive guide will share how we created our adventure and had some amazing “forced family fun”!

Yellowstone National Park, the nation’s first national park, is an amazing park that spans three states Wyoming (96%), Montana (3%), and Idaho (1%). The tremendous geographic diversity of this park is nearly impossible to explain. From nearly barren geyser basins to the most beautiful waterfalls on the planet to a snowy mountain peak of nearly 8,000 feet, this national park has something for everyone!

Planning your adventure is critical unless you have unlimited PTO and can spend all summer in Yellowstone. It’s even more important when traveling with teens who rely on an internet connection for survival!

Yellowstone Family Adventure RecapPorcelain Basin at Norris Geyser Basin in Yellowstone

If you’re short on time but eager for the highlights of exploring YNP with teens, here’s the breakdown:

  • Don’t skip the iconic spots like Old Faithful and Grand Prismatic, with pro tips for extra fun.
  • Navigate Yellowstone’s expansive landscapes with the handy Guide Along app.
  • Choose camping in Yellowstone for an authentic experience.
  • Balance teen independence with family activities, ensuring everyone has a blast and stays safe.
  • Optimize travel times for fewer crowds and maximize your summer break for a full park experience.
  • Prioritize safety and respect for the park’s wildlife and natural beauty, following all park guidelines.

Traveling to Yellowstone with Teens

When we started our RV journey in the fall of 2020, visiting Yellowstone National Park was near the top of our bucket list. Initially, we thought we’d go out for a long weekend like the kid’s fall break.

Then, we looked at a map did some quick calculations, and realized from our homebase in Louisville, KY, Yellowstone was over 1,700 miles…each way. With our average driving speed of 60 to 65mph when towing our camper, we realized Yellowstone is a long way from home!

We decided to “build up” our RV traveling skills before setting off on an EPIC journey like visiting Yellowstone. This gave us plenty of perspective to plan our entire Western States travel plan for our summer vacation.

10 Things to See and Do with Teens in Yellowstone

1. Old FaithfulOld Faithful

Perhaps the most iconic geyser in YNP because of its regularity, size, and accessibility. Old Faithful seems cliche, but turned out to be a family favorite. The beautiful rainbow certainly helped solidify Old Faithful as our favorite geyser.

Pro Tip: Stop in at the visitor center and ask the Ranger for some recommended hikes. Sometimes Rangers share “off the beaten path” recommendations that create amazing memories!

2. Grand Prismatic from Fairy Falls Trail Overlook

The boardwalks around Grand Prismatic are nice, but an aerial view is truly necessary to witness the beauty of the Grand Prismatic. Everyone seems to know about Fairy Falls, so visitors won’t have the overlook to themselves, but you still get amazing vistas!

3. Grand Canyon of YellowstoneGrand Canyon of YNP

Amazing! From the famous artist point to Lookout Point. Our teens like Lookout Point better than Artist Point because we had the view from Lookout Point to ourselves. Don’t skip out on the short but steep walk to the Lower Falls of the Yellowstone River.

4. Norris Geyser BasinNorris Geyser Basin

This was one of my favorite thermal basins. I appreciated the stark white landscape and the turquoise pools of water. In my mind, these were breathtaking!

5. Firehole FallsFirehole Falls

Without the Guide Along app, we would have missed this fantastic waterfall entirely. Firehole Canyon Road is a neat one-way road that winds through the canyon. The drive was beautiful. A giant osprey nest was situated close to the falls overlook, so we got an up-close look at this remarkable bird!

6. Travertine Terraces

At a distance, the travertine is so white it looks like snow! Logic takes over and rules that out because it’s hot outside (we visited in the summer). This feature was an area we rushed through because of a looming thunderstorm. We would enjoy spending more time in the Mammoth Hot Spring area on our next visit.

7. Mud VolcanoMud Volanco Basin

Grab your nose plugs because this area is super stinky. The Mud Volcano is neat because it’s bubbling mud from the earth. The thermal features of the park range from nearly heavenly like Grand Prismatic to downright yucky…Mud Volcano. This highlights the diversity of the park.

8. Old Faithful InnOld Faithful Inn with Clock (2)

The largest timber frame hotel in the world with a massive creek stone fireplace is a site to see. Moreover, we found the Old Faithful Inn a wonderful “throwback” to a time that had passed when hotels were filled with tourists enjoying each other’s company over a glass of iced tea or a cocktail. We recommend staying a night in this glorious Inn if your budget can handle it!

9. Gibbon FallsGibbons Falls

Gibbons Falls is a fantastic cascading waterfall that is directly on the way from West Yellowstone to the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone. A large parking lot is conveniently located next to the falls making for a quick stop on the way to the Grand Canyon. Our teens found this to be an excellent way to start our second day in YNP!

10. Drive the Grand Loop(s)

YNP includes a northern and southern grand loop that travels past most of the park’s notable features. We found the Guide Along app super valuable as we drove through the park. The loops provide plenty of opportunities to see Bison and other animals. Make sure you pack plenty of patience because these roads get crowded, and traffic moves slowly!

Helpful Resources for Families Traveling to Yellowstone

  • Old Faithful Education Center – Take advantage of the visitor center and the expertise of the park rangers. Park Rangers love YNP and want all visitors to have amazing adventures. Stop in for a few minutes and learn from the experts.
  • Yellowstone National Park History Film – In the visitor center, a video plays throughout the day that explains the history of YNP. Our entire family thought watching this video was a great use of 30 minutes. Plus, we dodged a rain shower while watching the film.
  • Plan ahead – Planning for snacks, lunch, drinks, weather changes, etc. can mean the difference between a fun and a terrible day to remember. The weather changes frequently. During our trip in June / July, we were rained on each day. We had our rain jackets handy, and we kept on enjoying our adventure.

Pro Tip: We had the thermal features to ourselves in the rain! All the other explorers started melting and ran for their cars! Keep a rain jacket handy and enjoy smaller crowds!

  • We liked the Guide Along app. This app helped us understand exactly what we saw while driving through the park. It was like having a travel guide in our car in many ways.
  • Dirt In My Shoes provides terrific itineraries. Ash, the founder, is a retired Park Ranger who helps guide visitors through the parks to have the best experience possible during crowded seasons!

Getting to YellowstoneYellowstone with Kids

Visitors can take planes, trains, OR automobiles to Yellowstone National Park. Once at Yellowstone, you need transportation or a guide service. This park is huge!

Automobiles + Driving

We love driving to our destinations. Although driving takes more time than flying, driving gives us a deep appreciation for the size of our country and varying geographic regions.

Traveling with teens on a multi-day journey to Yellowstone meant we needed to plan cool places to stop. We stopped in the Black Hills of South Dakota for about 5 days, serving as a “warm-up” to our Yellowstone adventure. We even camped one night in Billings, Montana, to cross Montana off our list of states. (11 Family-Friendly Things to Do in Billings, Montana)

On the road, Sara makes sure the kids download movies, tee up their summer reading (thank you, Audible), include plenty of snacks, etc. Sara scoped out several podcasts from Dirt In My Shoes that provided a lot of history about Yellowstone, Grand Teton, Badlands, etc. This kept Mom, Dad, and the teens happy while in the truck for several days!

Planes

With six airports near Yellowstone, traveling via airline is easy. Although we did not fly on this trip, we learned on a trip to Glacier National Park that flying as close to the destination is super important.

If your budget and trip align, the West Yellowstone airport may be an excellent option. If not, flying into Bozeman, Montana or Jackson, Wyoming are likely your best bets. Both of these airports should have daily flights from major hub airports.

Plan on renting a car at the airport for your adventure OR having a shuttle service to the park. We recommend having a car in Yellowstone because the park is so massive!

Trains

Amtrack makes traveling to West Yellowstone possible via train from major cities like Chicago, Salt Lake, Denver, San Francisco, etc. Sara and I would not consider that type of trip with our teens. The novelty of the train would fade quickly!

Pro Tip: A car or truck is vital in Yellowstone National Park. The park is nearly 3,500 square miles. An E-Bike likely doesn’t have enough charge to get you all the way around the north or south loops!

When is the Best Time to Visit YNP with Teens?

Like most families with teens busy with high school, sports, friends, work, etc., we had to “squeeze” our Yellowstone adventure in during the summer. We visited at the end of June and the start of July.

The park was busy. With patience and lots of planning, we had a fantastic time and saw all the major attractions.

We had friends who visited in early June, and they reported smaller crowds because a  number of schools were still in session. Visitors will find smaller crowds after Labor Day as well.

Pro Tip: The West Yellowstone entrance is super busy. Arrive early (e.g., before 7 AM), and you will sail right through the entrance. If you arrive at 9 AM, you will be waiting in a long line to enter the park.

Most visitors leave Yellowstone around dinner time, so plan to stay after 5 or 6 PM, and you will be rewarded with smaller crowd sizes. As a bonus, sunlight is visible until about 9 PM in the middle of the summer!

Yellowstone doesn’t close at night, so go at night for an entirely different experience! We did not out of concern for animals roaming the roads in the dark! And we were tired from exploring all day!

Camping at Yellowstone National ParkLone Star Geyser in Yellowstone

Thanks to its enormous size, nearly 3,500 square miles, numerous camping options exist. Yellowstone offers 12 developed campgrounds and over 2,100 “back-country” campsites inside the park. Keep in mind these campgrounds are not resorts and will lack many amenities you find outside the park, like WiFi, swimming pools, modern bathhouses, etc.

Fun Fact: 3,500 square miles is LARGER than Rhode Island (1,045 square miles) and Delaware (1,954 square miles) COMBINED!

We recommend checking out West Yellowstone and its developed campgrounds and RV parks for more luxurious camping. We stayed in Grizzly RV Park and found this park incredibly nice and well cared for. Our teens appreciated the strong Starlink signal, clean bathhouses, and the other amenities of Grizzly RV Park.

Other campgrounds in West Yellowstone include KOA West Yellowstone, Pony Express RV Park, Wagon Wheel RV Campground, Fox Den RV Park and Campground, and many more!

Cabins and Hotels at Yellowstone National Park

If staying in a hotel or cabin is more your style, Yellowstone offers a number of hotel options inside the park. These include Old Faithful Inn, Lake Yellowstone Hotel, Canyon Lodge and Cabins, Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel, and Roosevelt Lodge Cabins. These locations fill up quickly, so plan early. We have heard cell signal is spotty, so plan accordingly and communicate with your teen in advance to avoid a nasty surprise when you check in!

Visitors will also find a number of hotel options near the entrances, with West Yellowstone having the most choices and amenities (e.g., restaurants, shops, etc.) nearby.

Considerations for Traveling with Teens to Yellowstone

Sara and I have found that traveling with our kids as they have grown up into teens is both more accessible and more challenging. Fortunately, it’s much easier most days than when they were under 5. We have learned it’s essential to keep a few things in mind.

  • Independence – teens are learning to become good decision-makers. We have to set expectations and then let Madeline and Jack figure out how they will meet them.
  • Surprises – Everyone loves good surprises like ice cream, and everyone hates nasty surprises like soggy PB&J sandwiches. We find communication is critical to avoiding nasty surprises. Everyone is happier when Madeline and Jack understand we will leave early and get in some hiking miles!
  • Down Time – Teens need time to recharge. As our energy level wears down, we get cranky. It’s essential to realize cranky people sometimes say things they don’t mean. So have some grace. Recognize the signs of tiredness and give your teens, and parents, some downtime to recharge.
  • Sleeping In – We let the kids sleep in on our last day in Yellowstone. We took it easy, walked around West Yellowstone until lunchtime, and headed into the park. This gave us all some alone time to recharge!

Yellowstone National Park is Not a Petting Zoo: Follow the Safety and Regulations

Yellowstone is an amazing park to be enjoyed by all. It’s a place where visitors can get a feel for the wild without extreme danger as long as they follow the rules outlined by the National Park Service.

Visitors should stay on the boardwalks near thermal features. Keep a safe distance from the animals. Bison are huge and can run up to 30MPH! Crazy!

Please also practice the leave-no-trace principle of taking only pictures and memories and leaving only footprints!Yellowstone with Teenagers

Wrapping Up Our Adventure in Yellowstone with Teens

Visiting Yellowstone with teens was so much more than a vacation; it provided our teens and family a chance to create unforgettable memories in one of the most serene places in America! We came for the geysers and left with an appreciation for how expansive this park is and the vast geological features found in YNP.

Our adventure through YNP illustrated that visiting with teens is an enriching experience for parents and their teens!

Guest Author: Mike & Sara began RV camping in 2020 and instantly loved the lifestyle. We found the thrill of exploring new places, breaking our vacation routine, and crossing off all those “one-day” trips was a blast! At Our Campfire Unplugged, we enjoy sharing our experiences to help fellow travelers live their best lives.

Tip me

Pick a Place to Stay

Not everyone wants to camp in a tent. For those that prefer a cabin, we recommend checking out the cabins on VRBO. If you want a glamping experience check out the amazing glamping options on Expedia! To find good campgrounds in Europe check out EuroCamp.

Rent an RV

I highly recommend renting an RV instead of buying one. I bought one, only to realize I hated it. RVShare has all kinds of RVs you can rent.

Choose Activities and Tours

To find great activities in any area I use Get Your Guide and Viator. If we are visiting a city with lots of popular attractions I always check CityPass and GoCard to see if they have discount cards available. When I want to book a full-on multi-day tour I use TourRadar. They’ve got fantastic weekly deals.

Situated between the White Mountains to the east and the state border with Vermont, Littleton is a charming small town and might very well be your first introduction to New Hampshire.

If you’re wondering how much there is to do here and whether it deserves a spot in your itinerary, look no further. As someone who has road tripped through New England and the Granite State, seeking out hidden gems, picturesque hikes, and exciting destinations, I can assure you that Littleton has plenty to offer. This guide will help you uncover the best things to do in Littleton, ensuring your visit is both enjoyable and unforgettable.

Imagine yourself strolling through downtown on what has been repeatedly named one of America’s best Main Streets. A line of quaint little storefronts beckon you to come inside, and the smell of pancakes and fresh maple syrup wafts through the air from Littleton Diner, mingling with the scent of homemade fudge from Chutters Candy Store.

Crossing the picture perfect covered bridge gives you an even better view of the historic gristmill, now a modern brewpub, where you can relax and enjoy the afternoon along the river bank.

Ready to learn all about Littleton and what there is to do here? Let’s jump in.

Best Things to do in Littleton, New Hampshire

Walk Down the Charming Main StreetMain Street

Littleton’s Main Street captures the essence of small-town charm with a modern flair. From The Beal House, a 3-star hotel and restaurant, down to the Cottage Street bridge, this stretch makes up the heart of this community and is where you’ll want to start your visit.

A walking tour of town could take as little as 30 to 45 minutes, but with time to fully explore it’s best to set aside a few hours.

In the early beginnings of Littleton a sawmill and gristmill, which is still a prominent feature, were built right along the Ammonoosuc River. From there, shops and businesses began to appear and attract residents. Today, that history, dating back to the late 1700s is still preserved along Main Street, with a blend of modern storefronts, keeping Littleton relevant as both a place to live and visit.

You can find free and convenient parking to start your walk along Porter Street or in the lot at the end of Riverglen Lane. Metered parking is also available right along Main Street.

The Pollyanna StatuePollyanna Statue

It would be hard to miss Pollyanna Gateway. Its colorfully painted steps lead you, under equally colorful umbrellas, up to Main Street and the library. On the front lawn you’ll find the bronze statue of “the world’s most optimistic” fictional character.

Pollyanna stands with a bright smile and open arms, welcoming all visitors, while celebrating hometown author Eleanor H. Porter.

Her always-positive attitude has had a real impact and you’ll notice many references to Pollyanna throughout downtown Littleton. Fans of the children’s novel can head over to the Glad Shop to find Pollyanna keepsakes.

Riverwalk Covered Bridge

Covered BridgeTwo paths parallel the Ammonoosuc River on either side. They’re both connected by the Riverwalk Covered Bridge, a 352 foot long truss bridge that was finished in 2004.

From the center of downtown, you can cross the river, head west, and walk along a quiet and mostly shaded trail down to the Curran Suspension Bridge. This is a great place to find a bit of quiet and solitude and just listen to the river as it flows by. The whole path is accessible for anyone, with ramps at either end of the bridge.

To complete the loop, cross back over the suspension bridge and join Saranac Street, which will return you to your starting point. The entire walk is only 0.8 miles and will take about 20 minutes.

Chutters Candy StoreChutters Candy Store

No matter what your sweet tooth is craving, there’s something to satisfy it at Chutters. It’s home to the world’s longest candy counter, measuring 112 feet, and running the entire length of the store.

Not only are there jars upon jars of gummies, taffies, and jelly beans, Chutters also sells homemade fudge and all sorts of confections, some traditional, some less so. Chocolate covered potato chips anyone?

Lahout’s Ski ShopLahouts

Another Littleton claim to fame is Lahout’s Ski Shop, the oldest continuously operating ski shop in the US.

At over one hundred years old, the fourth generation family business has become an institution in New Hampshire, providing quality gear and service to everyone who comes through their doors.

Make a visit to browse new ski equipment and outdoor apparel, or just to have a look around at all the historic memorabilia throughout the shop.

You’ll find a Lahout’s location right on Main Street, at the intersection with School Street, but the original shop is the two story red building on the corner of Union and Pine.

Kilburn Crags

It’s known by locals as “The Crags”.

Thanks to a well-marked and beginner-friendly trail that finishes with views overlooking town, it’s long been a favorite hiking destination in the area. At almost 1450 feet, you’ll get a whole new perspective of Littleton and the Ammonoosuc River.

The hike up itself is relatively gradual, with arrows marking the way and leading you up the forested hillside.

Depending on the time of year you visit, each experience will be different.

During the spring and summer expect a forest lush with ferns and dense foliage, along with plenty of wildlife. The fall colors of the distant Presidential Range, serving as a backdrop against town, make for an especially beautiful fall hike. And the trail is still open in winter, when it’s blanketed with snow, though you’d be wise to pack a pair of snowshoes and be ready for an unplowed parking lot.

Parker MountainParker Mountain biking trails

The culture of mountain biking is alive and well throughout New Hampshire, and Littleton is no exception.

A local non-profit, PRKR MTN, maintains a 22 mile network of trails north of town, supported by the effort of volunteers and donors.

Parker Mountain is open year-round at no cost. In the summer, enjoy downhill mountain biking. In the winter, trails are groomed and ready for snowshoers, cross-country skiers, and fat tire bikers. If you’ve never tried a day of biking through snow on fat tires, you’re missing out!

Don’t have your own bike? Rentals are available by half or full day from Littleton Bike & Fitness and they have sizes and models for all ages. They can even refer you to a local shuttle service to help pick up and drop off gear.

Littleton Farmers Market

Nothing seems to bring together the feel of a small town community quite like a local farmers market. Whenever traveling, I love to stop by one if possible and pick up local treats, fresh produce, or just browse the work of vendors and artists.

Every Sunday morning from June through October you can grab a coffee and make your way over the covered bridge to the Littleton Farmers Market.

Live music performances, fresh flowers, meat, eggs, veggies, handcrafted soaps, jewelry, and wool products are just some of the things you can find.

Must Visit Restaurants in Littleton

The Inkwell Coffee House

If you’re anything like me, you’ll need a little morning pick-me-up before walking around town. Minutes away from Main Street, Inkwell Coffee House is serving up all assortment of caffeine charged drinks, hot and iced.

While you’re at it, you might as well grab a savory breakfast sandwich or AM power bowl and enjoy it inside their modern, Italian style bistro.

Littleton DinerLittleton Diner

Traditional American diners are a melting pot of good food and good people. And the Littleton Diner has been a place to find both of those for nearly one hundred years.

In 1930 the Stone family had a “parlor car” shipped in from Massachusetts by rail and placed on site. Ten years later, they replaced it with a new, Sterling company diner, the building still open for business on Main Street.

The interior is bursting with nostalgia and New England hospitality, with a bank of counter stools and solid wood booth seats. Traditional home cooked meals are served in generous portions, and the current owners pride themselves on crafting all their dishes fresh and made to order, at a reasonable price.

Schilling Beer Co.Schilling Beer Co

Three buildings make up the campus of Schilling Beer Co.’s European inspired craft brewery. The former grist mill is now a brewpub and kitchen.

At the building next door, adjacent to the covered bridge is the Mill Street Kitchen. They serve European dishes, including döner kebab and schnitzel sandwiches, that pair exceptionally well with beer.

And, on the opposite side of the brewpub is a modern, Scandinavian style tasting room that serves as the brewery’s flagship.

Between the tasting room’s cozy interior seating near the fireplace, high top bar seats in the old mill, or outdoor beer garden tables with river views, there’s always an enjoyable place to sit down with food and drink.

You’ll find a diverse and ever evolving selection of beers on tap, ranging from a floral Czech lager to the dry and spicy Belgian Tripel, as well as some experimental IPAs.

Littleton Freehouse Taproom & Eatery

Another popular spot to grab locally-sourced food alongside craft brews is the Freehouse Taproom & Eatery. Warm and inviting as it is, the restaurant still shows hints of its past, with an almost industrial feel. That’s because the building was originally a garage and Ford dealership in the early 1900s.

The term Freehouse is borrowed from the traditional British meaning, signifying a pub that’s not owned by a brewery and is free to serve a variety of beers. They take pride in featuring local nano and micro brews from all over New England. From hearty stouts to crisp and refreshing lagers, there’s always a wide selection on tap.

As far as the menu goes, it specializes in pub-style dishes to perfectly complement your drink. Popular choices include their fried cheese curds, brisket sandwich, or mac & cheese, topped with pulled pork or steak tips.

Upside a free app gets you cash back on gas! Use promo code RV2Q2 to get an extra 15¢/gal bonus on your first purchase.

Get a Visa

I use iVisa to get all of my Visas.

In November of 2019 I decided that I would sell my belongings, give up my apartment, and travel Europe solo indefinitely. Well, not entirely solo – I brought my dog, Andre, along for the adventure. I had long dreamed of a life of location-independence.

In January 2020, I took the plunge. Andre and I flew from Boston to Rome with just a small(ish) backpack and a carry-on suitcase. I had no idea what things I’d need along the way, what I could or couldn’t find in the countries I’d visit, or what I’d regret not bringing.

Now, nine months later, I’m finally ready to sit down and write a post on what I deem long-term travel essentials.

If you’re thinking of transitioning to a nomadic lifestyle, be sure to check out these top jobs for digital nomads as well as the best cities for digital nomads! While you’re at it, here are the best laptops for digital nomads as well!

Long-term Travel Essentials

Clothes

The amount of clothes you take will vary depending on your luggage situation and whether or not you’re traveling alone. Lugging around a large suitcase, backpack, and a DOG was not ideal for one person.

Not to mention, since I work remotely, I also have two laptops (and chargers and other tech-y equipment) with me. That stuff can weigh you down quickly!

I’d recommend to bring one or two articles for each type of weather so that you can layer. Plan on doing a lot of laundry (but don’t count on dryers always being available – sometimes your clothes will take a long time to dry!). Worst-case scenario, buy things you need along the way.

Tops

Three easily-rollable tank tops, three t-shirts, two light sweaters were all I brought with me for shirts.

Tank Tops

A lightweight tank top can double for yoga and wearing under a denim jacket in warmer months, and roll up smaller than the size of your fist, a definite long-term travel essential. They’re soft, breathable, and currently on sale for only $14!

Shirts

I’m a sucker for a good, oversized band graphic tee. I like wearing them with jeans, leggings, and sometimes even skirts for a more eclectic look (feminine while still keeping my ‘edge’). Urban Outfitters is my go-to for band shirts – they’re soft, cozy, and last forever.

Hoodie/sweatshirt

You’ll definitely need a long-sleeved shirt and/or hoodie to bring with you regardless of where you’re headed. Cool nights can happen in any climate, and you can get a heavier or lighter-weight sweatshirt based on your personal needs. My FAVORITE shirt I brought with me ended up being this lightweight knit shirt from H&M.

Bottoms

Leggings

There’s nothing more versatile than good leggings. My all-time favorites are the Align II by Lululemon. They feel like being naked, yet somehow still are keeping me warm during the cold season in Transilvania, where I’m currently posted-up. I brought four pairs with me (two full-length black, one full-length plum, one capri-length black). Sadly, my newly adopted puppy, Misi, decided he wanted the capris for a snack. They come in soooo many different colors and are great to wear alone, under a long skirt during colder months, or under ripped jeans to stay warm. And of course, yoga! They’re thin, but super-high quality and ultra-soft.

Jeans

I adore American Eagle jeans, as they’re really the only ones that fit me properly. I have a smaller waist and thicker thighs, and the AE jeans just fit me better than anything else I’ve tried. ‘Mom jeans’ are really popular right now in Europe, and these (pictured below) are my favorite pair at the moment. Definitely bring a pair you love, whether they’re Gap or Target, because lemme tell you – jeans fit differently in different parts of the world!

Woman modeling ripped jeans in front of fence.

Outerwear

Cold Weather

Depending on where in the world you’re going (and when), you may need something suitable for winter. Of course, I chose the easiest – I left for Europe in January, beginning in central Italy. My tentative itinerary was on to Hungary, Romania, Ukraine, Lithuania, and then…..? Needless to say, when COVID hit in March, I was in Romania and decided to stay put. Now, I have a second dog (Andre’s new best friend) and am living with my fiancé. Who knew? Anyway, Romania is so cold in winter!

A light denim jacket was perfect for me, and versatile enough to wear with everything I brought. Warm it up by adding layers and a scarf.

Underwear & Pajamas

Pajamas

For sleep shirts, I just use one of the tank tops I packed, or a long-sleeved shirt if it’s too cold. The washing machines abroad are generally not as large as in the US anyhow, so you’ll be doing laundry more frequently than if you’re coming from the States.

These pants. I cannot say enough about these pants (by Stars Above for Target). They are buttery soft, make your ass look phenomenal, and are comfy for both lounging and sleeping. I usually can’t sleep in pants because I feel too constricted, but these are heaven. I only brought one pair that are ripped everywhere now (thanks a lot, Misi), but currently waiting on a care package from mom with some more. Best part? They’re only $16.99 at Target. I opted for the cropped version, but they have a full-length style as well.

Woman in pajama pants reading a book with a dog looking at her. A large bookcase is in the background.

Bras

I need a solid sports bra, and for that, I really like Athleta. My chest is on the larger side and they offer sports bras with A-C support and ALSO D-DD options, which are perfect for me. This is my fave, I brought 2 with me.

For regular bras, I’m usually going with Victoria’s Secret for the same reason. I don’t find bras that are as cute, or that fit as well, anywhere else. I packed 3 regular bras.

Undies

I packed 12 pairs I think. Better safe than sorry! I’m sure everyone has their own underwear preference, but I usually get cheeky style from Victoria’s Secret 5/$25 or whatever their current deal is.

Bathing suit

Woman laying on dog, in a black bikini on a beach chair with a sun hat covering her face.

Bring one bathing suit (unless you’re traveling to a usually-warm beach destination). Standard black bikini is my pick.

Shoes

In my opinion, this is by far the most important category. Not because I’m shoe-crazy, but because my feet are really picky about what I’m walking around in all day. I can find comfort in virtually nothing! And my preference when exploring a new city is to do everything on foot. So good shoes were key.

Flip flops

For warmer weather, Sanuk flip flops are where it’s at. The sole is made out of recycled yoga mat, so they have a tempur-pedic quality. They’re durable (one pair lasts me 2-3 years, and I rarely wear other shoes in the summer, so they get a lot of use).

Sneakers

For the in-between weather, Classic Vans are perfect. You can wear them with a skirt, jeans, leggings, whatever. They’re super comfortable, so you won’t have to worry about being more focused on your aching feet than your adventure.

Boots

And in the cold, you’ll undoubtedly want something that’s waterproof and keeps your toes toasty. I opted for Uggs because of their proven quality coupled with the fact that I know for sure these bad boys are comfortable for my feet.

Accessories

Sunglasses

I lose sunglasses at least twice a year, so I’ve learned the hard way not to spend much on them. These hexagonal sunglasses from Urban Outfitters have actually lasted me 9 months!

Woman modeling hexagonal sunglasses and wide-brimmed sun hat, travel essentials for summer.

Hat

The hat in the above photo doesn’t transport well in a suitcase – I actually got this once I arrived in Romania. But, if space allows, this hat was a lifesaver all summer.

For cold weather, you’ll definitely need something that covers your ears. I love this one by C.C. (pictured below), even though my fiancé jokes that I look like a Russian prisoner. Also in the picture are my Align II leggings, favorite long-sleeved shirt, and Ugg boots.

Woman standing outside of old church wearing a beanie, sweater, leggings, and boots.

Bags

I brought along a laptop bag (which doubles as my day-to-day bag). After arriving I realized I needed something smaller and hands-free, so I jumped on the fanny pack trend. Depending on where you’re traveling, you can shop retail for much less than where you’re coming from. In my case (American, now in Romania), that was certainly true.

Scarf

I brought this gorgeous coral-colored sheer scarf with me to be used in the spring and fall. Come summer, it doubled as a beach sarong. It rolls up into the size of my fist and I think only cost $10.

Woman smiling and holding up a scarf, long term travel essential that has multiple functions.

Entertainment

Books or Kindle

Generally, when traveling, I am going for a week or two and always have room for hard-copy books. Considering the nature of my work, I’m always staring at a computer screen and I definitely prefer to hold a real book in my hands. Still, this isn’t ideal for long-term travel. Books are heavy and take up space.

A Kindle is a great option if you have the space, but if you’re limited (as I was), you can download the Kindle App on a laptop or smartphone to save even more space.

Headphones

Noise-cancelling headphones are a must for me – especially for planes or trains. I’m not a fan of headphones that cover your whole ear, since I like to wear them when running as well and get wayyyy too hot. Not to mention, I am losing them all the time, so I don’t like to spend much. These Aukey headphones are inexpensive, work well, and block out excess noise.

Camera

Depending on your personal needs, you may not need a camera aside from the one included on your smartphone. My phone is a bit old and the photo quality has gone down significantly, so I splurged and got a DSLR.

I’m still new to the world of photography, so I got this Canon EOS 250D Rebel that is appropriate for beginners. It comes with a 18-55mm lens that’s versatile and takes beautiful pictures or 4k video.

Woman taking selfie with Canon camera. Cameras are absolutely long-term travel essentials.

Personal care

Favorite makeup

You can find Sephora in most countries, but, if you’re like me and get your makeup from CVS or Target, you may not be able to find what you like. The one thing I can’t find anywhere is Maybelline Dream Matte Mousse. If there’s something that you really like and are not willing to change, stock up a little and take one or two extras.

Necessary toiletries

I brought a couple of travel-sized bottles of shampoo, conditioner, face wash, etc. with me when I left for Europe with the intent to purchase larger bottles upon arrival. This leaves more room and less weight in your suitcase.

That being said, I am not too picky when it comes to this sort of thing and don’t have a favorite brand, I usually just get whatever’s on sale. If you have a favorite or coveted brand, it may behoove you to purchase before leaving your home country.

Medication/vitamins

Melatonin is a must for me! I don’t fare well with insufficient sleep, and Melatonin always helps me when I’m feeling restless.

Ibuprofen was another of the best things I packed. I got a huge bottle (500 count) and am just now running out. Ibuprofen is more difficult to find in Europe and you can never purchase in that amount.

If you take vitamins or prescription medication, stock up on those as well. Any type of medication you regularly take is absolutely a long-term travel essential.

Band-Aids

I wish I’d brought more Band-Aids! Whether for a cut that won’t stop bleeding or a blister on your foot after hours and hours of exploring, I only brought maybe 10 total – definitely not enough!

Eye care essentials

Eye care is another important part of your personal routine, especially when you’re on the road for a long time. If you rely on contact lenses, make sure to pack enough pairs for your entire trip, as finding your preferred brand abroad can be difficult. Bring along your cleaning solution, a compact lens case, and a small bottle of eye drops to keep your eyes fresh in dry or dusty environments. Taking care of your eyes ensures you stay comfortable and ready to explore without irritation or strain.

Miscellaneous

Portable charger

This Anker portable charger was a life-saver a countless number of times. I will drain the battery of my phone throughout the day with camera and GPS usage, and it’s so nice to not have to return to the Airbnb to re-charge.

Pill-remover

Considering the amount of time I spend in yoga pants, I need this fabric de-fuzzer to keep my pants pill-free. It’s not a must-have for everyone, but I certainly need it!

Epilator

OK, here’s another item that may be a must-have for me, but not for you. Hear me out. If you’re a woman who spends wayyyy too much time dealing with shaving or hair removal, this is a great investment. I’m of Mediterranean descent and, come the summer months, I literally have to shave my legs every day. With this bad boy, that I was completely on the fence about, I only have to shave once or twice a week.

It’s my favorite discovery of 2020, and you can use it all over your body. After doing plenty of research reading reviews and comparing features & prices, I chose the Philips Lumea BRI953/00. It comes with three different attachments for different areas of the body, a carrying case and cleaning wipe.

It’s definitely on the pricier side, but in the long run it saves so much time and frustration – no annoying bumps on the bikini area from having to shave too frequently, either!

Weighted blanket

If you suffer from anxiety at all, this is a great option if you’ve got the space to pack it. Weighted blankets help you to feel secure and fall into a deeper sleep. This travel Gravity Blanket is great, especially for the first few nights of sleeping in a strange place.

Travel yoga mat

I did NOT bring a yoga mat, because I anticipated purchasing one once I reached my first destination (a village two hours north of Rome). Bad call. It took me weeks before I was able to finally get back to Rome and purchase one, as the cities nearer to my village didn’t have anywhere from which to purchase.

FYI, if you’re heading to Europe, Decathlon is a good store to find one (or any other sporting good needs). If you’re packing one, this travel mat from Lululemon is my preference. I’ve heard many people opt for the Manduka travel mat as well.

Sandwich bags

I needed these things for everything (I didn’t pack any initially, instead had my parents send some from home). I used them for dog food when taking mini-trips, storing food in the fridge (I could only find aluminum foil and no plastic-wrap for the longest time).

Sleep mask & ear plugs

Don’t forget these two at home! You never know when you’ll be staying in a room with no curtains or above a street that is unexpectedly loud. A solid sleep mask and a few pairs of ear plugs will save you from the frustration of sleepless nights. Definitely long-term travel essentials!

The exact things you’ll want to include in your long-term travel essentials will undoubtedly vary a bit from mine, but I hope this list gave you some insight into my biggest packing regrets for an indefinite trip through Europe!

If you’ve got a family of little explorers in tow, then Cozumel, Mexico, is about to become your new favorite playground. Nestled in the heart of the Caribbean, this island paradise is not just for honeymooners and scuba junkies; it’s a haven for families looking to create unforgettable memories together. While there are plenty of activities to suit honeymooners and adventure-seekers, there are also several awesome activities for families with small children.

From turquoise waters teeming with colorful marine life to thrilling jungle adventures and mouth-watering taco feasts, Cozumel has it all. So, grab your sun hats, slather on the sunscreen, and get ready to embark on a family-friendly adventure like no other. We’re about to spill the beans on the absolute best things to do in Cozumel with your kids and trust me, your little ones are in for a tropical treat!

Best Things to Do in Cozumel With Kids

Learn About Mayan Culture at Pueblo del MaizLearning about Mayans at Pueblo Del Maiz

It’s hard to travel to Mexico with kids and pass up on a prime opportunity to learn about the indigenous peoples’ cultures. While Mexico is home to many indigenous groups, the most notable from the Caribbean coastal region were the Maya. Pueblo del Maiz is a local attraction in Cozumel that showcases some of the most notable aspects of Mayan culture in a way that is fun and digestible for kids and adults alike.

On a visit to Pueblo del Maiz, you can expect to play ancient ball games, watch live performances, create your own chocolate from raw cacao, and roll your own tamales. The staff is incredibly friendly, and they do a great job of bringing Mayan culture to life.

Pueblo del Maiz is located just a short 10-minute drive from the island’s main square. Entrance fees vary by season but are very affordable compared to some other attractions on this tourist-centric island. There is no need to make a reservation in advance.

Try Local Food in the Central SquareCozumel

One of Mexico’s proudest international claims to fame is its cuisine. Mexican food can be found all over the world, but the best is served right on the streets in any Mexican City. Cozumel’s main street foods are representative of what you’d find in cities all across the states of Quintana Roo and Yucatan, which make up the Yucatan Peninsula.

Eating street food in Mexico is safe, so long as you take basic precautions. It’s best to only eat meat that is served warm, and you should avoid salads when possible. The best approach is to stick to fruits and vegetables that you peel, when possible, as any contaminants tend to be on the skin and not the fruit.

Some foods you won’t want to miss in Cozumel are esquites, churros, and tacos. Churros are fried dough covered in cinnamon sugar, and a good churro is life-changing. Esquites is essentially corn sliced off of the cob, stewed in broth and herbs, and served in a cup with a range of toppings including cheese, salsa, and cream.

For a special treat, ask the vendor to put the esquites in a bag of Doritos along with the toppings of your choice. Like a meatless walking taco, these “Dori-esquites” are a hidden secret of Mexican street food, and there are great vendors right in the central square of Cozumel.

Explore at Chankanaab Adventure Beach ParkChankanaab Adventure Beach Park

Chankanaab Adventure Beach Park is one of the most popular venues on the entire island. This park is equipped with beach access with private cabanas, restaurants, a spa, and a great diving center. In addition to these, there are excursions that allow visitors to swim with manatees, sea lion performances, playgrounds, and more.

Entrance into the park is pricey by Mexican standards, but generally affordable by international standards. Adult tickets cost $26, while children’s tickets cost $19. All children under the age of 3 are admitted for free.

The park is located just a short drive away from the island’s main city center and the cruise port. Most guests that go to Chankanaab spend a half day or longer there, and you could easily spend a full day enjoying this park’s various amenities.

Have Fun at Playa Mia Grand Beach ParkPlaya Mia Beach Club Cozumel

While Chankanaab is a great place for adventure, Playa Mia Grand is one of the best places for pure fun and relaxation in Cozumel. This park is packed with great activities for children, from a 200-foot waterslide to pools to floating jungle gyms and more. Playa Mia Grand claims to have one of the biggest private beaches in all of Cozumel, and the water is immaculate.

For parents, the park also offers all-inclusive packages for drinks and food, as well as various spa packages. This place is a load of fun for the whole family, and tickets start at around $35 per person at the time of writing.

Playa Mia Grand is located just 20 minutes from the island’s main square. If you’re looking for a more relaxing day where your family can soak up the sun, you should check out Playa Mia Grand Beach Park.

Dive Underwater with the Atlantis Submarine TourAtlantis Submarine Expedition

If you’re looking for a dose of adventure but aren’t able to take your kids scuba diving, the Atlantis Submarine Tour might be a great option for you. This exciting tour takes you and your family 100 feet below the Caribbean Sea, where you get exclusive looks at some of the exotic marine life around the island. The submarine excursion is considered to be very safe, with a highly experienced crew available onboard at all times.

The submarine adventure is suitable for all kids above the age of four, but no kids younger than that are allowed onboard. Similarly, pregnant women may partake up to the 6th month of pregnancy.

The total time that you spend underwater on the tour is about 45 minutes, but there is additional time involved to get from the land to the submarine. In total, you can expect your experience to last about two hours, and the memories to last a lifetime.

Relax at Playa Chen Rioplaya chen rio in Cozumel

Cozumel is known for having some of the best beaches in all of Mexico. As a Caribbean island several miles off the coast of the mainland, its beaches are raw, pure, and stunning.

The beaches on the west side of the island, which is the side facing the mainland, are the most crowded. This is where the majority of the beach clubs are, and it is the most developed area of the island.

The island’s east coast is a sight to behold, though. While the sound of raw, virgin beaches is boring to some families who prefer large waterparks, it is equally exciting to others. Playa Chen Rio is one of the best beaches in Mexico, and there’s a good chance you won’t even see anyone else there.

This area doesn’t get great cell phone reception and doesn’t have many amenities to offer, but the pure beauty of the nature is otherworldly. If you decide to spend a day at Playa Chen Rio, consider taking your own food and drinks so that you don’t need to leave early.

Additionally, if you don’t have your own car, ask your taxi driver if he’d be willing to come back and pick you up at a certain time. Sometimes, very few cabs pass through this area.

Punta Sur Park

Punta Sur Park Punta Sur is a park in Cozumel great for families with two lighthouses, Mayan ruins, a lagoon full of crocodiles, a beach club, and much more! The Mayan temple “El Caracol” is absolutely fascinating. When you take your kids into the little Navigation Museum under the lighthouse make sure you ask for an exclamation on this Mayan lighthouse. It will blow your mind! You also should go up in the lighthouse for epic views of the park!Lighthouse at Punta Sur Park You can take a boat tour of the Colombia lagoon and look for crocodiles! No matter what you do, spend some time enjoying the gorgeous white sand on their beaches.

HOURS: Monday to Saturday from 9:00am to 4:00pm

ADMISSION: Adult $16.00 USD, Child $10.00 USD (Aged 4-12)

Learn About Chocolate at the Mayan Cacao Company

Did you know that chocolate is originally from Latin America? While some of the world’s best chocolate nowadays comes from places like Belgium, Switzerland, and the United States, the true origin of chocolate is in Mexico. Mayan people and other indigenous groups created chocolate thousands of years ago, and the practice was eventually brought back to Europe by explorers to the New World.

The Mayan Cacao Company offers sessions that teach visitors about the history of chocolate and show them how it has been made for thousands of years. Conveniently, the Mayan Cacao Company is located within Playa Mia Grand Beach Park, so you can visit it while enjoying all of the other amenities that the park has to offer. Beware that separate reservations are necessary, and you’ll have to book directly with the Mayan Cacao Company.

Playa Mia Grand Beach Park

Playa Mia a beach club in Cozumel Playa Mia is one of Cozumel’s grandest beach clubs. You can soak up the sun, surrounded by complimentary activities and beach toys, authentic cuisine and soothing spa treatments. Explore the cultural sights and sounds of Mexico with tours celebrating tequila, chocolate and other local flavors. Swim along Cozumel’s coral reefs on a snorkel tour. Feel your heart race as you plunge down our 200-foot-long Twin Twisters water slides. Set your kids free to become pirates at Buccaneer’s Bay. If you are looking for the perfect way to getaway with your best girlfriends, then New York City is an excellent choice.  As someone who has lived in the area for more than 10 years, I’ve spent many days and nights enjoying all the city has to offer with some of my best friends.  There truly is something for everyone and a girls trip to New York City will bring memories to last a lifetime.

Whether or not this is your first trip or one of many, this guide will tell you everything you need to know when planning your girls getaway to NYC

Best Time to VisitGirls trip to New York City

New York City is a four-season destination with something to see and do anytime of year.  If visiting in the winter, try going closer to the Holiday season when there is so much magic all around. Spring has that exciting vibe as the winter comes to an end and flowers are blooming everywhere.  The weather is mild but can be rainy at times so go prepared!

Summer is hot, but exciting with tons of outdoor festivals to enjoy.  This is a great time of year to explore the many parks and try out a rooftop pool.  Fall, is probably my favorite season of all.  The golden hues all around.  The weather is just perfect – not too hot, not too cold, making it the ideal time for a lovely city exploration with friends.

Things to do on your Girls Trip in NYC

From the iconic sights to hidden gems, there are so many incredible activities and experiences that promise an unforgettable trip with your friends. Whether you’re into art, food, or just soaking up the city vibes, it will be a truly fun and memorable trip to NYC.

Exploring NYC’s Iconic LandmarksStatue of Liberty

New York City’s skyline is iconic, marked by legendary landmarks that are must-sees on any trip, especially a girls’ getaway. Top of the itinerary should include The Statue of Liberty, a symbol of freedom and democracy, and an awe-inspiring sight for both first-timers and those revisiting. Take the ferry over to Liberty Island or try a harbor cruise around the island.

Empire State Building

The Empire State Building offers breathtaking panoramic views from its observation decks. Going up this historical skyscraper is a classic NYC experience.  Alternatively, try Top of The Rock for even better views of the NYC skyline with the Empire State Building as an incredible backdrop.

Brooklyn Bridge

Safety and Practical Tips

The safety and well-being of your group should always be a priority, especially when traveling in a busy city like New York.

Navigating the City Safely

Stick to well-lit areas and use trusted transportation methods, like rideshare services, or the MTA subway system. Always be aware of your surroundings and keep a buddy system in place, especially at night. It’s also a good idea to map out your destinations in advance and share your itinerary with family members or friends back home.

Staying Connected and Safe

Ensure everyone in the group has a charged phone and a plan for staying in touch, such as a designated meeting point or a messaging app. Keep important documents and valuables in a secure bag and make use of hotel safes. Register with your country’s local embassy and familiarize yourself with emergency services numbers.

Managing Personal Safety in Public Spaces

It’s important to be aware of your surroundings. Avoid keeping cellphones in your back pocket. Stay close together with your friends especially when exploring at night. If confronted with a situation that feels uncomfortable, don’t hesitate to leave the area and seek help.
