Looking for a great lunch spot near the strip in Las Vegas?

Brio Tuscan Grille is over in Town Square near the airport in Las Vegas. It’s a beautiful place with a nice but casual atmosphere and best of all it’s kid friendly.

It was the atmosphere out on the patio that made me want to eat there. I had walked past it many times when I was out there shopping. I assumed it would be expensive based on the look, so I always ate somewhere else. Finally, I checked the menu and realized some items were completely reasonable.

We went on a sunny afternoon for lunch. We had to wait quite a while for a table, but it was worth it.

I took a picture of the ceiling because it was so unique. I wish I had taken a better picture of the patio area. The have a wrap around patio with an outdoor patio.

You can see part of the patio here. That’s my son playing with a dough ball they gave him. It kept him very entertained.

He had the kid’s cheese pizza. It was wider than he is.

I had the chicken limone for 8.99. It was fantastic.

My friend Ashlee ordered an eggplant sandwich that she hasn’t quit talking about since. I think we are going to have to back soon so I don’t have to hear about it anymore!

We had a carafe of white peach sangria for $17. You van see the size of the carafe here. It was at least four drinks, but there was next to no alcohol in it.

We did not get dessert since we had already splurged on sangria! They looked good. I could tell the waitress thought I was odd for asking to take a photo.

Brio Chicken Limone Copy Cat Recipe

Chicken Limone Ingredients

  • 2 Chicken breasts, boneless and skinless Cut in half horizontally and pounded to 1/4”thick
  • 1/2 Tsp Salt
  • 1/2 Tsp Pepper
  • 1/2 Cup Flour
  • 1 Large egg
  • 1 Tbsp Milk
  • 2 Tbsp Olive oil
  • 3 Tbsp Butter
  • 1 green onion, diced
  • 1 Lemon sliced very thin
  • 1/4 Cup White wine
  • 2 Tbsp Lemon juice
  • 2 Tbsp Capers

Chicken Limone Directions

Season the flour with salt and pepper.  Place flour on a plate or on a large piece of foil. Add the egg and milk to a small bowl and mix well.

Coat the chicken with flour on both sides and then dip the chicken in the egg wash.

In a frying pan over medium-high heat, add 2 Tbsp of olive oil. Once heated, add the chicken to the pan.  Cook until browned, 2 -4 minutes. Turn over and cook another 2-4 minutes. Once brown, place on a plate.

Place lemon slices into the pan and allow to cook for 1 minute on each side. Add the lemon slices to the chicken.

Add half the butter and green onions into the pan. Saute until soft, about 1  minute. Then add wine and lemon juice. Whisk to remove browned bits on the bottom of the pan. Simmer for 5 minutes to reduce. Turn the heat to medium and add the other half of the butter and the capers. Whisk until the sauce thickens.

Drizzle the sauce over the chicken and lemon slices.

Serve with sauteed veggies like squash and zucchini.

Are you throwing a bachelorette party and need some party favor ideas. Here are great bachelorette party favors that anyone would love!

Bachelorette party favors - personalized wine glasses

I’ve previously mentioned that I went to Las Vegas for my baby sister’s bachelorette party. Since I am her only sister and maid of honor, I put the event together. I wanted to make the weekend fun, but extra special.

I had seen different ideas on Pinterest and ended up doing something similar to things I had seen. I just loved the way everything turned out and wanted to share them with you. I think everyone left feeling like it was a perfect bachelorette party.

Bachelorette Party Favors

Each person attending the Vegas bachelorette weekend got a few gifts. I mean what’s a party without some bachelorette gifts? received a personalized wine glass. I had these glasses made up. (Holly at AllMyGoodness did them!) All the girls loved them.

DIY Vegas Survival Kits

Bachelorette party favors - survival kits

I also made up these survival kits for the party. I have a lot of ideas for building survival kits this post.

  • 2 drink mixes
  • 1 mini bottle of liquor
  • 1 mini bottle of bubbly
  • 2 bandaids (for your feet after dancing the night away in heels)1 granola bar
  • 2 Tylenol
  • Shout on the go wipes (Nobody wants to go with a stain on their dress)
  • 2 sticks of gum
  • 1 nail file

PINCH Minimergency KitPINCH Minimergency Kit

If you do not want to put together your own emergency kits I recommend handing out PINCH Minimergency Kit. This all-inclusive kit is designed to help women survive beauty, fashion, and personal care predicaments. Fix flyaways with a teeny-tiny hairspray. Stop runs in your hose with clear nail polish. Mend a fallen hem with double-sided tape. This kit does it all—and it comes in an adorable, portable pouch.

  • A 17-piece kit of beauty, fashion, and personal care products for fast fixes on the go.
  • Includes double-sided tape, a safety pin, a mending kit, 2 earring backs, dental floss, clear nail polish, an emery board, nail polish remover, stain remover, hair spray, clear hair elastics, a tampon, pain reliever, breath freshener, and lip balm.

Book for the Pool

Last but not least I gave everyone a copy of A Reliable Wife, because you have to have a book to read at the pool or at the beach! Also, because it’s an ironic story. She’s not a very good wife.

Bride to Be Sash

Now it’s important to make sure the bride-to-be stands out from the crowd. You can buy a bachelorette party veil and sash on Etsy or you can make a unique bachelorette sash and veil. For my best friend’s bachelorette party I made some unique ones for the kind of bride she planned to be. She had a country-themed wedding planned, so I incorporated the theme into her bachelorette weekend in Fredericksburg. She wore them during our night out on the town.
Bachelorette Party bridal sash and veil

How to Make a Custom Sash

  1. Get approximately 2 yards (1.8 m) of a 3 inches (7.6 cm) fabric. Measure the fabric on someone by wrapping it from their hip to their opposite shoulder and back down to their hip. Consider a thicker, matte type of fabric to ensure that the iron-on letters will adhere to the ribbon.
  2. Choose the trim. Accent your sash with some fringe or lace. Make sure to get enough to cover the entire edge of the sash.
  3. Select iron-on letters. Choose iron-on letters in the style and color of your choice. Make sure that the letters are the iron-on type and that they will fit onto the sash you have chosen.
  4. Pin the trim to the fabric. To accent your sash, pin the trim to one edge of the fabric or to both edges if desired. Make sure that the edges of the ribbon and trim are overlapping by at least 0.5 inches (1.3 cm). Place a pin through the ribbon and trim every 2 inches (5.1 cm) to 3 inches (7.6 cm) to secure them.
  5. Sew the trim in place. Use your sewing machine to sew a straight stitch about 0.25 inches (0.64 cm) from the edge of the trim to secure it to the ribbon. Make sure that you sew through the fabric and the trim.
  6. Position the letters on the fabric. Fold the fabric in half so that the two ends are matched up, and lay the fabric on a flat surface. Then, begin placing the letters so that they are centered on the fabric. Start and finish placing the letters about 3 inches (7.6 cm) to 6 inches (150 mm) from the fold and the end of the section. Space letters out as evenly as possible.
  7. Iron the letters in place. Follow the instructions for the iron-on letters to iron them onto the Fabric. You may need to cover the letters with a towel to protect them from the heat. Follow the instructions that come with the letters.
  8. Pin the ends of the sash together. Before you secure the ends of the sash, try it on. Position the sash how you want to wear it and adjust the ends so that they meet near your hip. The ends should be overlapping at a slight angle. When you are happy with the fit, place a pin through the 2 ends to secure them.
  9. Sew across the sash ends. Remove the sash with the pin still in place. Then, use your sewing machine to sew a straight stitch across the two ends. Sew just below where you pinned the ends together. Remove the pin after you finish sewing.
  10. Cut off the excess material. After you finish sewing the ends together, cut along the edge of the seam, about 0.5 inches (1.3 cm) from the stitches you just sewed. Then, discard the excess fabric and your sash is ready to wear.

Lucky for me, I have a friend that can sew because I cannot and she knocked this out in no time. Lindsey and I have been best friends since we were 11 year olds.

Bachelorette Party T-Shirts

Mix -shirts can be super fun for the party. Everyone in the bride tribe should get one. There are so many cute ideas on Etsy. You can customize them based on personality or destination. There are lots with team bride or bride squad. Here are a few I thought were super cute. bachelorette party shirts

Tanks would be great for going to a day club pool party or the beach.

And of course, you need a bag to give them all this cool stuff inside so it might as well be a personalized bag.

Bachelorette party favors - tote bags

Hotel Room Thematic Baskets

You can also put together a basket of goodies to keep in each room. You can choose items based on the type of bachelorette party it is which is usually based on the bride’s personality. For example, a spa weekend is very different than attending wild parties in Las Vegas. Some fun gift ideas to go into each basket or gift bag are:

  • Pre-made Coffee drinks
  • Bottled water
  • Liquid band-aid (if you are wearing heel and going dancing or doing a bar crawl this will help prevent blisters on your feet)
  • Lidocaine (spray it on your feet to prevent them from hurting)
  • Bottle of Champagne (maybe one per day)
  • White and red wine
  • Pre-made alcoholic beverages like Mudslides, Margaritas, or Long Island Ice Teas.
  • Deodorant
  • Eye drops
  • Allergy medicine
  • Chips
  • Popcorn
  • Pop-tarts (or some other breakfast to keep everyone from getting angry before brunch)
  • Feminine Hygiene products
  • Cheers or Purple Tree hangover pills
  • Magazines to read by the pool
  • Snacks

Have you thrown an epic bachelorette party? We would love to hear about it and your ideas!

Getting to the United States

You are going to have to fly. Then once you are there you may need to fly around within the United States because the country is massive.

When to go

Hypothetically, you could visit the United States during any season, depending on what you want to go for. Visit from June-August for beaches and summer activities, September-November for foliage, apple picking, and pumpkin carving. From November-December, many cities have dramatic holiday displays and decorations to admire, as well as plenty of events for the kids. December-February provide ideal months for skiing, snowboarding and other outdoor winter activities. The spring months of March-May are reserved for wildflower blooms, flower shows, Mardi Gras, and St. Patrick’s Day festivities.

For lower costs, visit in April-May or September-October. Prices for travel are high in November due to Thanksgiving.

The United States is simply too big to list all of the major cities and their different personalities. Depending on your interests, you’ll surely find somewhere that suits you in the USA.

Getting around within the United States

This is one country where it’s almost necessary to rent a car. The rail system in the United States is not as well-connected as in Europe, and also much, MUCH more expensive! The country is so big that, if you want to do your own thing, renting a car is your best bet.

Flying within the country is also quite expensive – to be honest, I fly from Boston to Europe cheaper than elsewhere in the United States. If you must fly within the country, the budget airlines are Spirit, Frontier, and Jet Blue – just don’t expect much in the way of luxury (or leg room, for that matter).

Flight Resources

Skyscanner is the website I use for all of my flights. Other travelers also like Momondo.

Money-saving tip: Don’t input any dates to scan the best available times to go OR simply input ‘Netherlands’ instead of a specific airport – you may get a much cheaper flight!

Accommodation Resources

When I travel, I prefer to use VRBO. I book an entire apartment, giving me my privacy and the comfort of home amenities, such as a kitchen and washing machine. Since my dog(s) travel with me, it also allows me to filter based on pet-friendliness without the stress of disturbing hotel guests. Also, by getting your own apartment (or shared apartment), you’ll have use of the kitchen, allowing you to cook your own meals and save some cash by avoiding expensive dinners.

If you’re traveling long-term, VRBO usually offers discounts for stays of a month or more – the discounts are not as significant as in Europe, but it’s still worth a shot!

For run-of-the-mill hotel stays, Hotels.com usually offers the best deals. Also be sure to check out the Budget hotel chains, such as Motel 6, La Quinta, Super 8, and America’s Best Value Inn. Hostels can be overpriced in the United States and the hostel culture prevalent in Europe is virtually nonexistent.

Safety Tips

The United States falls somewhere in the middle in terms of safety. It’s such a large country with so many different areas, that it entirely depends on where you are going. That being said, all major cities have some aspect of danger to them, particularly in the ‘seedier’ areas. You’ll find areas you feel safe and areas you don’t feel safe in most all cities you visit. Trust your judgment and remove yourself from situations in which you feel unsafe.

Florida mangroves in the everglades.

Money Saving Tips

The United States is a fairly expensive country to visit, particularly when coming from most of the rest of the world. That being said, some regions of the country are definitely more expensive than others. Areas near larger cities and more populated states (New England, New York, D.C., California, Chicago) are going to be your most expensive places to visit.

If you want to visit the States but are looking for places that don’t cost quite as much, the Southern States (the Carolinas, Florida, Louisiana), the Pacific Northwest (Washington, Oregon), and areas that are further from major cities will likely be cheaper.

Go to a local grocery store and cook your own breakfasts and dinners. Eat out for lunch – most restaurants have lunch menus that have smaller portions and lower prices. Find BYOB restaurants to save money on alcohol.

If you don’t already have one, create a Pinterest account! Pinterest is an invaluable resource for travelers. Simply input ‘Free things to do in….’ and see all the great options that come up. There are plenty of free things to do in the major cities.

Speaking of cities, get yourself a city pass if you plan on doing a lot of sightseeing – museums, tours, public transport, etc. are usually highly discounted with the purchase of a city pass.

The Cosmopolitan Resort in Las Vegas is one of the hottest hotels on the Vegas strip. Find out why you will want to stay here the next time you visit Las Vegas.

Cosmopolitan Las Vegas hotel room

Cosmopolitan Las Vegas

The Cosmopolitan is one of the newest hotels and casinos on the Las Vegas strip. Opened in 2011, it’s a really well-done hotel. The whole place is awesome, they’ve done a great job. I saw a lot of kids around so I am assuming this would be a good family hotel. I have stayed here with friends and with the kids. Both experiences were quite enjoyable.

When I stayed I was using a military discount and my nightly rate was less than $200. Plus, it’s associated with Marriott so you earn points and can use points to stay here. Check today’s rates.

Benefits of Staying at the CosmopolitanCosmopolitan Resort Las Vegas

This hotel has everything you need and then some:

  • Rooms with two beds: With two beds up to four friends can stay together and split costs. Or a family of four can stay comfortably in one room.
  • Fantastic restaurants: The Cosmopolitan has some awesome restaurants, my two favorites are China Poblano and Jaleo. They both offer happy hour!
  • Hot Nightclub: The Marquee nightclub continues to be one of the top nightclubs in Las Vegas. The outdoor portion with the rooftop patio has amazing views.
  • Fun Dayclub: The Marquee is also a day club with optional private cabanas offering bottle service, private hot tubs, and a live DJ.
  • Pool Time: The Cosmopolitan has two other pools beside the day club. The Boulevard pool has an exciting vibe and overlooks the strip. Besides lounging next to the pool, there’s a gaming area with pool tables and video games. The Bamboo pool is a quieter area. So, if you are looking to relax and read a book, head there. (Or if you are just hungover and your head is about to explode.)
  • Shopping: You will, of course, want to be close to shopping just in case you feel like shopping. The Cosmopolitan is close to the Shops at Crystals and across the street from the Miracle Mile Shops at Planet Hollywood.

Cosmopolitan Room Options

Terrace One BedroomTerrace One Bedroom Cosmopolitan Las Vegas

Our most recent room here is the terrace one bedroom. It has a separate bedroom, living room, sink area, and bathtub/shower room. There are two robes and two sets of slippers in the closet. The bathtub is massive and it overlooks the strip.

Terrance Studio w/ 2 Queen Beds with Fountain View

I stayed on the butler floor when I stayed here with my sister and I highly recommend it. Our room was huge with a massive bathroom with a jetted tub and a separate shower and had a large balcony overlooking the Bellagio fountain and the strip. I loved staying in this room. It’s so nice to sit on your own balcony watching the fountain.

Cosmopolitan Dining Options

Overlook Grill

Bloody Mary at Overlook Grill at the Cosmopolitan

Overlook Grill is right next to the Boulevard Pool. It is possible to eat here even if you are not staying at the Cosmopolitan. They have a fantastic Bloody Mary and it pairs perfectly with the breakfast sandwich.

The Henry

The Henry is best known for brunch. Our brunch was excellent, but I found it not to be worth the wait. I went with their “Signature Short Rib Benedict” which was braised short ribs, soft poached eggs, hollandaise, and hashbrowns for $20. I washed it down with a few cocktails including the “HOT UNDER THE COLLAR” their House Bloody Mary with Green Chili Vodka, Mary Mix, a pipette of Sriracha, rosemary, and bacon for $14.

The Henry for brunch at the Cosmopolitan Vegas hotel

The Best thing about the Henry is that it opens at 10 PM and is open until 2 PM the next day. If you arrive in the middle of the night this is a good place to eat.

Jaleo

Jaleo is the tapas restaurant inside the Cosmo. Their food is delicious, but it’s expensive and the portions are small. Jaleo at the Cosmopolitan Las Vegas

MomofukuRamen at Momofuku in Vegas

I have mixed feelings about Momofuku if I am honest. Our meal was half good and half bad. The good was outstanding though.

Secret PizzaSecret Pizza in the Cosmopolitan Resort

Secret Pizza is a grab-and-go pizza place slightly hidden away on the second floor. You can customize your slice however you like. We tried the veggie pizza and it was phenomenal. It’s open super late, so we were able to eat here for dinner at midnight. The line moves pretty fast.

Block 16 Food Hall

Since the last time I visited they have added an assortment of restaurants in a food court style, two of which I am extremely familiar with, Lardo.

LardoLardo

Another Portland favorite is now in Vegas. Created by Chef Rick Gencarelli Lardo has over-the-top sandwiches that will soon be your favorite too!

District: Donuts, Sliders, BrewsDistrict: Donuts, Sliders, Brews

District: Donuts, Sliders, Brews has the most amazing donuts and is apparently a New Orleans’ cult favorite. I highly recommend grabbing breakfast here one morning. They also have Vietnamese coffee, lattes, and more.

GoCity Las Vegas

Tekka Bar: Handroll & Sake

If you want sushi and sake without leaving the hotel this is your place.

Vegas Happy Hours inside the Cosmopolitan Hotel

Milos inside the Cosmopolitan offers a happy hour from 5:30 – 7 Monday through Thursday with $10 small plates and $6 Greek beers.

Blue Ribbon also inside the Cosmopolitan has happy hour Monday – Thursday from 5:30 – 7 with $7 sushi rolls and $7 beers.

STK another restaurant located inside the Cosmopolitan offers happy hour Monday through Thursday from 5:30 – 7 PM with $5 beer, $8 cocktails, and food options for $10.

Scarpetta inside the Cosmopolitan offers you guessed it happy hour Monday – Thursday from 5:30 – 7 PM with $7 cocktails and $7 food items.

Chandelier Bar

This first picture is of the Chandelier Bar. The Chandelier bar serves fancy martinis. I highly recommend trying the s’more martini. Or one of their signature drinks.

SIGNATURE DRINKS

  • Whiskey Business: This new twist on the Old Fashioned combines The Cosmopolitan’s barrel of Knob Creek bourbon with bitters, Amaro Meletti, and “Old Time Rock ‘n’ Roll” syrup.
  • Finishing School: A floral mule of Ciroc Red Berry vodka served with strawberry rhubarb rose syrup, citrus, ginger beer, and plum bitters.
  • We’re All Mad Here: An ode to Alice in Wonderland, this gin-based concoction starts blue but changes colors once blended, and is accompanied with an edible tag that makes your tongue tingle.

The Cosmopolitan PoolBoulevard Pool at the Cosmopolitan

They have a pool lounge area that’s incredible and has amazing views because it overlooks the strip. This is the Boulevard pool. There’s also another pool that’s a little calmer and a day club. Both pools have a hot tub.

The game area in the pool area is complete with 6 TVs, PlayStations, and more.  I can’t wait to check this place back out when it warms up.

The Chelsea Pool is very calm compared to the other pool. Although, the last time I was at the Boulevard pool is was totally low-key.

Marquee Dayclub

Marquee day club
Hanging out at the Marquee day club during my divorce party!

During the day the Marquee turns into a day club. For the most part, women get in free. We got in free, but they ushered us over to some cabana full of guys. We ended up having a great day. Most cabanas have their own hot tub. There’s a DJ playing and people dancing everywhere. You do need to be 21 or over to get in.

Sitting Areas

A sitting area on the third floor of the Cosmopolitan.  This is where many of their restaurants are. There were lots of kids, so it seemed to me to be a kid-friendly area. Right near there is a tapas bar. It’s good and has paella too.  It was a little pricey, except for the Sangria. It was priced right and delicious.

Cosmopolitan hotel and casino in Las Vegas
Nearby was a family game area. Again, I saw kids. This time playing games with their parents. There were also teenagers playing games while their parents watched. There’s foosball and pool.

Cosmopolitan hotel and casino in Las Vegas
There’s also lots of seating near the food court on the 2nd floor. There’s one area where it’s an Alice in Wonderland theme.

It’s time to start sharing some other awesome things to do in Las Vegas with kids. You won’t just be going out to eat, and obviously, they won’t be hitting the slot machines.  So, what to do? Considering how many kid attractions in Las Vegas there are, you have a long list to choose from. This list is an amazing place to begin planning your daily activities in Vegas!

15 Fun Things to do with Toddlers in Las Vegas

24 Fantastic Activities for Teenagers in Las Vegas

Adventure Canyon – Enjoy the fun log ride and participate in the interactive games of shooting the bad guys before your journey is complete.

Adventuredome at Circus Circus: America’s largest indoor theme park.

Atomic Testing Museum – My older boy, who is 10, thinks this museum is amazing. It is highly educational. He walked away with a deep understanding of the atomic program and WWII. It’s not so great for the other two kids, especially my four year old. I would recommend it for ages eight and up.

Bellagio Conservatory

Bowling – There are many bowling alleys in Las Vegas. I would guess that one out of five casinos has one. One we enjoy is at the Santa Fe Station Casino off of highway 95. It is separate from the casino and not smoky; unlike most of the bowling alleys here we’ve been too.

Caesar’s Palace Forum Shops

Caesars Palace Pool – you can pay to go without staying here.

CSI: The Experience – Be a CSI and investigate a mock crime scene to solve the mystery.

Free Activities in Las Vegas

Floyd Lamb State Park – Enjoy a picnic and a hike through this park. Stocked ponds, volleyball courts and horseshoe facilities are available on this 2,040-acre park.

Fremont Experience – We’ve done the Fremont Street Experience many times and no matter how many times we go there’s always something new. We’ve never had the same light show experience twice.

High Roller Sky Wheel – The tallest observation wheel in the world, peaking at 550 feet, the High Roller offers views of the Strip and the surrounding desert valley.High Roller Las Vegas

Hiking at Mt. Charleston – Located just north of Las Vegas up highway 95 is Mt. Charleston. Depending on the season you can take the family hiking or sledding. When we go it will be hot, but as you hike up it gets cooler. We have done several hikes there and so far the kids have been able to do them all! If there is still snow on the ground when you go I recommend heading towards Kyle Canyon campground. Often there is enough snow at this campground to do some sledding. If not, just keep heading down the road until there is enough snow!

Hike Calico Basin out near Red Rock Canyon, it’s free.Hiking Calico Basin with Kids

Hoover Dam – Heading out to Lake Mead to see Hoover Dam is interesting, but it does take a lot of time. Keep that in mind before heading that way!

Ice Skating – Fiesta Rancho casino has an ice skating rink and I always have fun ice skating even though my kids break my back through the entire experience. The nice thing about this rink is they have the children’s bars to help them skate on their own. This saves your back a lot of pain!

Indoor Rock Climbing

Las Vegas Mini Gran Prix – Do some racing on this speedway in Gran Prix Cars, Super Stock Cars, Kiddie Cars, and Go Karts.

Lied Discovery Children’s Museum – My kids always enjoy this place, especially the bubble and water areas. The museum has tons of hands-on activities, live presentations and a huge area for kids 5 and under.

Madame Tussauds – See your favorite celebrity in wax form.

Ride Roller Coasters – You can ride the roller coaster at NYNY. Circus Circus also has some rides, but they are more low key.

Scavenger Hunt for Kids in Las Vegas  – free printable! As you walk around you can use this scavenger hunt to keep kids busy!

Shark Reef –  Mandalay Bay has an awesome aquarium, the Shark Reef Aquarium, with all kinds of fish and sharks. It even has touch pools. At first, I was put off by the price, but I was pleasantly surprised to feel like I got my money’s worth after visiting.

Springs Preserve – Surprisingly awesome while still being educational. This is a learning center full of hands-on activities and exhibits for kids. They have two playgrounds, a restaurant, multiple gardens, and extensive hiking trails.

Sugar Factory – Kids will love all the free samples inside the candy store attached to the restaurant.

Tivoli Playground – An outdoor shopping center with a covered playground for kids. Plus, there is a splash pad and a sandbox.

Valley of Fire – Cool day trip, if you have time.

Wet N Wild

Wet'n'Wild Las Vegas

Las Vegas has a newish Wet N Wild out in the southwest part of the city. It’s pretty far out, but totally worth the drive. If we still live in Vegas we would get season passes, because we had a blast.

Now you might be thinking to yourself that the Wet N Wild is right along the strip, but this is incorrect. The one your thinking of has been gone a long, long time. This one is all new and much better than that old one that was torn down a decade ago.Wet'n'Wild Las Vegas

One really cool feature at this water park is the ability to have your picture made on some of the rides. The Action Photo Bracelet’s wearable technology makes it possible for you to capture action shots with our automatic waterslide cameras.  They deliver all the photos instantly to your phone or e-mail!

Wet’n’Wild Las Vegas offers over 30 cabanas for around $100 for the day and no this does not include food. Now, normally I would scoff at this. I can’t stand spending money on stuff like this. I make the exception in Vegas because you will need to be in some sort of shade part of the day and this is the best way to make sure your kids get some shade time in.

Kid-Friendly Hotels in Vegas

Of course, you have to have a nice place to stay regardless of what is on the list of things to do in Las Vegas. Hotels are a must, and you really want to make sure that it is kid-friendly for your children.  This list is a great place to begin.

Aliante Station (North Las Vegas) If you are working up towards Nellis Air Force Base and bringing the family, this is an excellent option.

Caesar’s Palace

Cosmopolitan my personal favorite.

Golden Nugget – Cheap, offers great deals on a regular basis.

Mandalay Bay

Residence Inn Las Vegas South

The Palazzo – Every time we’ve stayed here, there’s been a ton of kids.

Trump – smoke-free, which with kids is a massive perk

Safety Things to Think About

Las Vegas is a true tourist town. As such, there are very few places that tourists will need to completely avoid. There are, however, a few places that you should stay away from in this booming town, especially since the economy has gotten worse. (It’s recovered some!) Here are some of the places that are not as nice as the rest of the city.

Of course, the Las Vegas strip is where many people come to visit, and although most of the strip is safe, it is probably best not to walk between Circus Circus and the Stratosphere hotel. If you are going to visit these places, make sure that you drive between the two. Any of the hotels have good security once you are inside the hotel, it’s just the outside that may present an issue.

On the south side of the strip, there are fewer and fewer places that you need to avoid, but if you can, try to avoid crossing the street between Planet Hollywood and the Harley-Davidson Cafe. The intersection here can be crossed, but far too many pedestrians cross when they shouldn’t, causing traffic issues in an already congested city. Try crossing the bridge from Planet Hollywood to the Cosmopolitan. From here you can get all the way to Mandalay Bay without ever having to cross at street level, making it safer for pedestrians and drivers alike.

If you want to see the other side of the street, there is a crossing bridge between New York New York and MGM Grand where you can safely cross and go up the street.

Fremont Street – Fremont Street itself is not that bad, but the parking and areas surrounding this place can be dangerous. Of course, if you would like to brave this area, some of the cheapest food and gambling is available here. You can even pick up a fried Twinkie. I recommend parking at the Golden Nugget if at all possible. This is where we always park.

Other than that, you will want to avoid the east end of town. As you go west, the neighborhoods get better and better, but as you go east, they start to deteriorate fast. The best advice for visiting Las Vegas is to stick to those places that are advertised as being for tourists. Make sure that security is highly visible no matter where you go. Take all safety precautions, and you will be safe.

Meagan Shamy

Meet Meagan

I am a busy single mom to Noah 22, Eden 20, and Jonah 16.

On any given day you can find me living the mom life of packing lunches and running a carpool back and forth to football near Dallas, Texas.

On a more exciting day, you might find us swimming with elephants in Thailand, eating exotic foods in Sri Lanka, or riding insane roller coasters in Orlando.Family photo at Disney Aulani

I’ve been to at least 35 countries, but why keep count? I don’t travel for the bragging rights, I travel for the experience. I believe that quality time (my love language) gained through travel is one of the most important things in life and that’s why I encourage others to create memories with their own families one trip at a time. Why? Because you get one life. You better enjoy it.

My email is Meagan@MommyTravels.net.

You can find me on Twitter @MeaganWristen and on Facebook.

I am originally from West Texasobsessed with Tex-Mex food, and a proud Texas Tech Red Raider.Barcelona Park Guell

I’m a boot-wearing, God-loving Texan, with an intense desire for adventure. I love laughing and spending time with those I love.

I’ve never met a vehicle I can’t off-road or something I cannot do, even if it takes me an unreasonable amount of time to accomplish it.

I’m a slow runner, except when running from llamas. I’m not a fan of heights and a fairly pathetic swimmer, but I give it my all anyway.

I love to read and enjoy a glass of wine while I sit in the hammock the kids and I weaved in Honduras.the pool at Paradisus Los Cabos

But most of all, I enjoy hanging out with my family and my girlfriends. I’m that “ride or die” friend that will back you up no matter what, even if I maybe shouldn’t. And if you’ve had a bad month, I’ll get on a plane to fly overnight to see you. Hell, I’ll fly to Australia just to check on you. Just ask Erin, she still can’t believe I showed up in Melbourne.

How My Travel Started

Sleeping on a military hop
Sleeping on a military hop

It has been my experience as an Air Force military wife being dragged moving all over the country: Texas, Mississippi, Oregon 3x, Idaho, Florida, Nevada, Alabama, Georgia, and Honduras that has given me a hatred for moving love for travel. Each time we moved I wanted to enjoy and explore the areas around us.Where to find Star Wars Characters in Disneyland

Depending on where we were stationed it was a trip in itself just to go see my mom. Turns out I’ll travel thousands of miles to see my mama. I hope my kids feel that way too someday!

1st Family Road TripToyota Tailgate

Some of my first trips were Noah and I traveling from Columbus AFB in Mississippi back to Texas and New York to see my family. I still remember my first big road trip with Noah. It was a few weeks after September 11th and the base we were living on was in constant lockdown. It was extremely difficult to get on and off the base, so I decided to take Noah to my mom’s house until things calmed down. I packed up my little two-door 1995 Dodge Neon and we road tripped 913 miles to my mom’s. I had to stop often to nurse and change diapers. It took a couple of days, but we made it!

Little did I realize back then that this was to be the 1st of hundreds of road trips we would take. At this point, the kids and I have road-tripped at least 100,000 miles in just within the United States. And Noah, my little baby is in college. He and I road-tripped across seven states a few months ago so he could be home for the summer break.

How I Became an RVer

As my family grew, travel had to become more kid-friendly. Each time you add another kid into the mix, it becomes more challenging to travel, but not impossible.

When Eden was a baby she would cry all night at a hotel. The solution was a 32-foot class C RV and a lot of small camping trips around Idaho where we happened to be stationed at the time.

Nowadays Eden travels like a pro.

My RV horror story: I was driving our RV from Las Vegas to Idaho and Noah was sleeping on the bed over my head. (Yes, I know, he shouldn’t have been up there.) He leaned over and told me he didn’t feel good. Before I could ask him what was wrong he threw up all over me. The takeaway, do not let your child lay down on the overhead bed while driving. Also, can you guess why I sold my RV?

As more time went on and by the grace of God I became a single mom, but that hasn’t stopped us from traveling the world. We just took our first trip to Asia! That’s how this family travel blog came to be. I hope you enjoy it and it helps you plan your own family trip.

I got to attend a travel blogger briefing about UV eye safety a few weeks ago by the Vision Council and I’m excited to pass on what I learned.(3)+UV+Safety+Infographic

If you’ve read this blog for a while then you know that my daughter suffers from an eye condition caused by allergies that is difficult to control. When it’s at its worst she becomes extremely sensitive to light. So, our family knows first hand how crucial it is to protect your eyes, no matter what your age is. If your child is overly sensitive to sunlight take them to see an eye doctor immediately, not the pediatrician. This is a sign that something is wrong.

As you can see, I’m not kidding, we have everyone covered!

What You Need to Know About UV Rays

Now back to the UV eye safety briefing I got to attend. Here’s some of the great stuff I learned.

  • By the time a child turns 18, they will have acquired nearly 80% of lifetime exposure to UV. Kids need to wear sunglasses.
  • Always carry/pack sunglasses with you that way you have them when you need them, because your eyes can get SUNBURNED!
  • Some cities have more intense UV Rays then others: Rome, Italy, Orlando, Hawaii, Las Vegas, and Atlanta. Here’s a chart for you to check.

  • If you are wearing sunscreen you should also be wearing sunglasses.
  • When skiing, you should be wearing at least sunglasses, goggles would be even better because snow reflects 85% of UV light!

Kids ski goggles are very affordable. We got our kid ski goggles at Big 5 on Black Friday for $10 a pair.

Wondering what the UV levels are near you?
In case you are unsure what type of protection to get or unsure which is the best to purchase check out this great guide.

As you plan your future travel heading into fall – please remember to pack your UV-protective eyewear – and take lots of pictures!
