If you’re in the midst of planning a trip to Kauai, Hawaii, you’re probably debating between staying on the Garden Island’s North or South Shores. Given the attitudes of most Kauai guidebooks, you’d think that the small island’s East Coast is just as inaccessible as the beautiful, rugged Na Pali Coast on Kauai’s west side.

But Kauai’s East Coast, particularly the Kapa’a area, is seriously underrated. There are so many must-do things in Kapa’a to add to your Kauai itinerary.

This area of Kauai offers lush jungle, towering palm trees, and some of the best restaurants on the island. Stop viewing Kapa’a as “that spot on Kauai with bad traffic” and get exploring!

A Quick Introduction to Kapa’a, Kauai Waipouli Beach sunrise Kauai East Coast - 1-1

Kapa’a sits in the middle of Kauai’s Royal Coconut Coast. It’s said that the area’s signature palm trees are courtesy of an unlucky investor planted thousands of coconut trees along the coast, hoping to strike it rich, but not factoring in the decades it would take for the trees to reach maturity.

Located just 6 miles north of Lihue Airport, Kapa’a makes a convenient base for a Kauai vacation. Nearly 30% of the island’s population lives in the small area north of the Wailua River and east of Makaleha mountain range. You’ll find a high concentration of towns in this small geographical area of lush valleys and plentiful fresh water including Wailua, Wailua Homesteads, Waipouli, and Kapa’a. For the purposes of this post, we’re exploring things to do in this entire area.

While all of Hawaii caters to tourists, Kapa’a feels very different from Kauai’s other more tourist-centric destinations like Poipu. In Kapa’a, tourists need to merge into everyday life with the locals. Many downtown Kapa’a stores are designed with residents, not visitors’ souvenir shopping, in mind. If you need a supermarket, pharmacy, or hardware store while you’re on Kauai, you’ve come to the right spot!

With so many people calling the Kapa’a area home, it shouldn’t be a surprise that the East Coast  is the epicenter of Kauai’s notoriously bad traffic. There’s stop and go traffic, especially in the southbound lane, almost all day long. You can avoid this (to a certain extent) by using the bypass road around Kapa’a. Just remember, there’s only one main road around the island and everyone’s trying to get somewhere. Practice patience and know you’ll get where you need to go in good time.

Why Visit Kapa’a, Kauai

In addition to those striking palm trees, the Kapa’a area offers vast sandy beaches, access to the thick Kauai jungle you known from Indiana Jones and Jurassic Park films, and numerous municipal paths and hikes, all with a dramatic mountain backdrop. You’ll also find the mouth of Wailua River here, which is one of the most sacred places in all of Hawaii.

A base in Kapa’a puts you in the perfect position to explore all corners of Kauai. You can be in Princeville on the North Shore in about 30 minutes. Meanwhile, the furthest reaches of the island – Waimea Canyon State Park – is only an hour’s drive away. But with so many things to do right around Kapa’a, you might find you never need to venture beyond this lush area during your entire Kauai stay.

13 Best Things To Do in and around Kapa’a Kauai

Hike the Kuilau Ridge TrailMountain valley view from the Kuilau Ridge Trail - 1-1

This popular jungle hike is located about a 20-minute drive inland from Kapa’a. An easy wide trail takes you uphill through lush foliage on 3.5 mile round-trip out and back hike. You can make it into an 8-mile loop hike if you prefer, but the trail narrows considerably when you reach the small waterfall at the 1.7 mile mark. Just be sure to wear shoes you don’t mind getting covered in Kauai’s infamous red clay!

Visit Keahua ArboretumKeahua Arboretum outside Kapaa Hawaii - 1-1

After your time hiking the Kuilau Ridge Trail, the neighboring Keahua Arboretum is a great place for picnic among native Hawaiian plants and trees. A stream runs through the Arboretum and trails crisscross this rainforest oasis.

Kayak the Wailua River to Secret Falls

One activity you’ll see on almost every Kauai itinerary whether you’re staying in Kapa’a or elsewhere is to kayak up the Wailua River and hike to Secret Falls. At this point, this waterfall is anything but secret! To reach Secret Falls, you’ll kayak two miles up the river from its mouth, then hike approximately a mile to the waterfall. There are several kayak rental shops in Wailua and Kapa’a who will either drop off your kayaks at the river or help you strap it to the top of your car.

Smith Family Garden Luau

If you’re looking for a luau experience in the Kapa’a area, the Smith Family Garden Luau is considered one of the best luaus on Kauai. Located in a beautiful, lush garden park, the experience includes a feast loaded with traditional Hawaiian foods followed by a show. Just be sure to make reservations in advance for this popular luau if this is going to be an integral part of your Kauai visit.

Get hand pies at Passion Bakery Café

This small bakery located in Wailua is a great place to pick up a breakfast sandwich or plate lunch. If you’re looking for some baked goods to take on a hike, they are especially known for their hand pies. (Try the haupia!) On Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, they make fresh malasada donuts.

Shop at the Coconut Marketplace /Thursday farmer’s marketKauai East Coast Coconut Coast near Kapaa - 1-1

This open-air market right off the Kuhio Highway in Wailua is a fun place to take care of all of your Hawaiian shopping needs. The market includes gift shops, restaurants, and the Island Country Market where you pick up souvenirs, groceries, alcohol, and other supplies.

On Tuesdays and Thursday mornings from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m., there’s a farmer’s market in the parking lot where you can stock up on produce like tropical fruit, avocados, and coconuts. Be sure to check out their calendar of events as they often offer hula and lei making classes as well as free hula shows.

Get breakfast at Java Kai

Be prepared for a line at this popular breakfast joint in downtown Kapa’a. Known for their smoothies, breakfast sandwiches, and, of course, coffee, this is the spot to grab breakfast and that required coconut latte in Kapa’a. Inside the café can get pretty cramped, but they also provide ample outdoor seating where you can enjoy your meal.

Hike on the Ke Ala Hele Makalae path Ke Ala Hele Makalae path on Kauai's East Coast - 1-1

Whether you’re looking to bike, scooter, or walk, the Ke Ala Hele Makalae multi-use path is a gentle, wide beach path that’s a great way to get out and enjoy the Coconut Coast. The 8-mile path uses an old train grade and is divided into two sections. The first section runs from Lydgate Beach Park to Waipouli. The northern part starts in Waipouli Park and continues to Ahini Point.

A popular destination along the Ke Ala Hele Makalae Path is the old Pineapple Dump site. Here you’ll find a large concrete structure left behind from an old pineapple cannery. From Kealia Beach, it’s just over a mile walk to the old Pineapple Dump. There’s a nice Pacific Ocean lookout here, along with an informational plaque about the area’s agricultural history.

Hike Sleeping GiantSleeping Giant Hike in Kauai

The Sleeping Giant (or Nounou Mountain) watches over Kapa’a. (Or at least the giant would if he hadn’t fallen asleep on the job after eating too much at a feast, according to local legend.) You can hike up this mountain via a rewarding, but difficult 3.2 round-trip, out and back hike. Like all Kauai hiking trails, the trail can be quite muddy and slippery. At the top, you’ll enjoy panoramic views of the island, including a view of Mount Waialeale which is said the be the wettest place on earth with more than 400 inches of annual rainfall!

Ho’opi’i Falls Kauai Ho’opi’i Falls

This out and back hike along Kapa’a Stream takes you past a series of waterfalls on a 2.2 mile out and back hike. You’ll recognize the second set of falls from Jurassic Park. If you want to, you can take a refreshing swim in the cool water at the base of the waterfalls. Since the trailhead is accessed in a residential neighborhood, local residents ask that hikers wait until at least 8 a.m. to start the hike, take care to park appropriately, and keep their voices down when accessing the trail.

Catch the sunrise over Waipouli beach and visit Kukui Heiau

As you might expect, Kapa’a’s location on the island’s east coast means it’s not a great spot for sunsets. However, what it lacks in sunsets, it makes up for in sunrises. A beautiful spot to watch the sun rise out of the Pacific Ocean is Waipouli Beach. While there, you can stroll along the Ke Ala Hele Makalae Path and visit Kukui Heiau, a small temple used by early Hawaiians that’s now listed on the National Registry of Historic Places. Since this is a sacred spot, keep your visit brief and respect all the instructions on posted signs.

Best Kapa’a Restaurants

Lava Lava Beach Club

Lava Lava Beach Club Restaurant Kapaa Kauai - 1-1While no restaurant can’t actually operate on a Kauai beach, you can get a sandy, beachy dining experience at Lava Lava Beach Club where the outdoor tables are set up on a sandy expanse with an ocean view. This fun, casual restaurant has a great selection of both Hawaiian American fare and is a great spot to enjoy a mai tai.

Hukilau Lanai

One of the best restaurants on Kauai is tucked in the Kauai Coast Resort. They’re especially known for their fresh fish specials. Be sure to make your reservations well in advance.

Sam’s Ocean View

This favorite Kapa’a restaurant lives up to its name with a fantastic, unobstructed view of the Pacific Ocean. The menu features small plates and inspired entrées and cocktails. If you’re struggling with jetlag, they have a great happy hour if you need an early dinner.

Conclusion: What to do in Kapa’a, Kauai

Kapa’a and the East Coast makes a fantastic base for your Kauai adventures. Instead of blowing through this area on your way to the North Shore, take time to really explore Kapa’a. You’ll find ample amenities, excellent restaurants, and rewarding hikes. It’s a wonderful place to merge into Hawaiian culture and live your best island life.

11 Fun things to do in Kapa'a Kauai

Get Travel Insurance

Unfortunately, there are a lot of things that can go wrong on any trip. Be prepared for the worst with travel insurance. We use Travelex or Safety Wing (often cheaper).

Book Flights

I use Skyscanner to find flights. I use it so much, I wrote an entire guide to finding cheap flights with Skyscanner! Another option for finding deals is FlightHub.

Book a Place to Stay

I recommend using Expedia.com or Hotels.com for most hotel bookings. I prefer to book directly with Marriott when I stay there because of their excellent military discount.

If you prefer staying in a vacation rental instead, I recommend VRBO. If you are looking for a hostel, I use HostelWorld.

Choose Activities and Tours

To find great activities in any area I use Viator. If we are visiting a city with lots of popular attractions I always check CityPass, PogoPass, and GoCard to see if they have discount cards available. Groupon also tends to have a lot of local travel deals.

When I want to book a full-on multi-day tour I use TourRadar. They’ve got fantastic weekly deals. If going somewhere in Mexico or the Caribbean, I use Apple Vacations.

Rent a Car or Get a Lyft

More often than not, Lyft is cheaper than Uber. Use my Lyft link for an $18 credit! For a car rental in any country, I recommend Hertz or Discover Cars.

Save Money on Gas

Upside a free app gets you cash back on gas! Use promo code RV2Q2 to get an extra 15¢/gal bonus on your first purchase.

Get a Visa

I use iVisa to get all of my Visas.

Hawaii is like the buffet of vacation destinations! There are so many things to do and so many places to see, you could visit Hawaii each year and still not cover everything! So how, then, can you plan a fabulous trip to Hawaii without feeling overwhelmed by all the choices? You just need to make a few choices before you go and the rest will fall into place.

First, you need to decide which of the main islands you’d like to visit. Hawaii isn’t like most other places; it is actually the world’s longest chain of islands, with 132 islands in total. Each of these islands are actually the tops of submerged volcanic mountains and most are not inhabitable by humans. However, there are about 8 other main islands : Hawaii, Maui, Molokai, Oahu, Kauai, Niihau, Lanai, and Kahoolawe (which is not inhabited, but you can visit by boat). The main islands each boast beautiful beaches, volcanic mountains (many of which can be explored), tropical ocean swimming, diving and fishing, as well as popular tourist attractions such as shopping. The smaller islands can be visited, but you’ll want to spend most of your time on one of the bigger islands to get the best feel for Hawaii.

OahuOahu

If you are a little unsure of what you want, you’ll like Oahu. Oahu boasts a larger city feel with shopping, nightclubs and lots of wonderful restaurants. You’ll still be able to experience the diverse cultures that make up Hawaii as Oahu boasts the most cultural and historical sites in Hawaii. You can visit the famed North Shore to do some surfing or just lay on the white, sandy beach and then return to your first class hotel at night to relax. This is the best island to visit if you are a first-time visitor to Hawaii.

Oahu Travel Guide

MauiMaui Hawaii

Maui is perfect for you if you love to golf! It has several PGA class golf courses as well as gorgeous vistas and amazing beaches. You can hike to the summit of Haleakala in Haleakala National Park for something a little out of the way, or just lay on the beach all day. And Maui is a little less expensive, but also has fabulous hotels and condominium rentals for your stay.

5 Family Things to Do in Maui, Hawaii

Big IslandBig Island, Hawaii

If your loves are horseback riding, or hiking, the Big Island of Hawaii is the one for you. It is so ecologically diverse that you can experience water, lush tropical forests, snow-capped peaks of mountains and volcanoes all in one place. The Big Island has fabulous hotels, but is also much more budget friendly for families who might be visiting.

Kauai

Napali Coast

Kauai is the oldest and has the most secluded feel of the main islands. The beaches stretch for miles and you might never see another soul as you walk along the shore. It has exotic vegetation and often people come here to explore and relax with a much slower pace to life. Although there are wonderful hotels to stay at, you will visit Kauai with a need to unwind and get back to nature without the hustle and bustle of big city life. This is a great place to honeymoon!

Navigating Kauai with Infants and Toddlers

North side of Kauai Hawaii

Lanai

Lanai is for the rich and pampered! It has two of the top hotels in the entire world and really is not the place to go if you want to do sight-seeing, shopping or exploration. This is the place to go if you have a platinum credit card and want to do nothing other than sit by the pool at your hotel and be doted on. To get a great feel for the diversity of the Hawaiian islands, Lanai is not really the place you’d want to visit. This is for those who have been before and just want an experience this time.

MolokaiMolokai Hawaii

If you really want to experience Hawaii, really get a feel for how the locals live, then you might want to visit Molokai. This island has the most natives living here, huge with diverse cultures and peoples, but not extensive in the way of tourism. This is a place where people live, not necessarily where people take a vacation. It might be interesting to take a quick hop over from Maui or Lanai to see the beauty of Molokai, but you won’t want to vacation here if you are looking to be pampered.

Now that you know which island you’ll be visiting, the rest is easy. Pack up your camera, sunscreen, bathing suit and some comfortable shoes and explore! Your hotels can provide you with great local maps and advice on what to visit when you get there. Who knows, maybe you’ll even get to see an active volcano? Hawaii is an experience like no other!

Each year, millions of people head to Hawaii in search of the perfect vacation. Whether you’re looking for a beachfront hotel with kids’ clubs and water parks or an exclusive retreat where you’ll have your own pool, there are many options to choose from.

You want to take a vacation but don’t know where to go.

Resorts are a great option because they take care of everything for you. But with so many options to choose from, it can be hard to decide which one is right for you.

When is the best time to visit Hawaii?

The best time to visit Hawaii is typically in the fall, in October or September. The crowds tend to become smaller at the end of the summer months, therefore hotels offer cheaper rates to tourists. If you’re looking for good weather and fewer crowds, the end of the summer months are the best months to visit. However, keep in mind that hurricane season runs from June to November.

How much does a typical trip to Hawaii cost?

Depending on how long you plan to stay in Hawaii, it’s feasible to visit at any time of year. The cost of a flight will vary depending on where you depart from and arrive.

Round-trip flights range from $500 to $875, with lower-cost West Coast airports such as Los Angeles and San Francisco providing alternatives if you need to find a cheap flight. The price of a room at a resort in Hawaii varies depending on the season, but you can generally expect to pay around $200 to $600 per night.

Resorts in Hawaii with vacation packages offer great value for your money if they include all of your meals and drinks (alcoholic and non-alcoholic) in the price of the room. You’ll also have access to all of the resort’s facilities and activities, so you won’t have to worry about paying extra for anything.

How much does a trip to Hawaii cost?

There are many factors that influence the price of a trip to Hawaii, such as where you’re going, how long you will stay, and what kind of accommodation. The prices can range from low budget to high end, but this is dependent on your personal preferences.

Saving money on a trip to Hawaii doesn’t mean you have to forgo all the luxuries. There are plenty of ways to save, whether you’re looking for a budget-friendly hotel or want to pack your own food.

When booking your trip, consider traveling during the off-season. The cheapest time to go to Hawaii is typically in the fall when the weather is still warm and the crowds have died down. If you’re not limited by school schedules, consider traveling during the week instead of on weekends. Weekdays are always less busy and tend to be cheaper.

We’ve done the hard work for you and rounded up our top picks for resorts in Hawaii that are perfect for families.

The last time I visited Kauai I had a baby, a toddler, and a kindergartner. So, I have more than a few things to say about doing Kauai with a baby or toddler. Choosing the best place to stay

Dining

Your choice of lodging can have an ultimate impact on your trip. If you’ve ever dined with a toddler, you know you won’t get your money back on the average meal, and your little will often be hungry again within the hour. Explore options that include inclusive dining options, or find a location that lets you store food in your room to create your own pantry. A refrigerator is a must for storing snacks and milk, and a microwave can be used to heat hot water or a travel bottle warmer.

Rooms

If you have multiple littles with you, you’ll want to consider a suite, or adjoining rooms for the extra beds, as well as quieter napping opportunities. Larger rooms may have a separate living and dining area that can create a true home away from home feeling too. When visiting Kauai with a baby you will want to make sure the resort has a crib or pack and play and the room will need to be big enough to fit it.

Amenities

And don’t forget the amenities! For the tiniest guests, a pool with a splashing or shallow end can make all the difference. When I went to Kauai with toddlers I stayed at Bali Hai, which has a zero-entry pool. Your kiddos may not be up to larger water slides yet but may enjoy warmer wading areas and fountains. Look for a quiet cabana where mom and baby can bond while the rest of the family plays. Many hotels will also offer babysitting services or referrals. This is the perfect option for mom and dad interested in a quiet dinner or a relaxing massage.

Recommended Kauai Hotels for Toddlers

Kauai features many fantastic beaches. With little ones in tow, you can’t easily go surfing. You also can’t experience many boat rides with children under 5. One thing you can do is explore the many tide pools, walking at your own pace to make new discoveries all across the beach. Remember that some tide pools are safer than others, so ask locals for the best spots to go and at what times.

And don’t forget the beach basics. Most hotels will offer umbrellas and chairs to let you simply lounge near the water. When choosing your hotel, explore nearby beach options for an area with shallow waters and gentle waves. Enjoy the shade and soothing surf while your little one creates castles in the sand. You will be amazed at how long a child can sit and dig in the sand.

Poipu Beach is ideal for small children. They have a little protected area and restrooms. It’s also a great snorkeling area and there’s a small playground. Poipu Beach

Lydgate Beach also has A small protected area perfect for children. Plus the snorkeling is good here too. There’s also a massive playground located here. Lydgate Beach

Entertainment

Attend a Kauai Luau. One of the classic entertainments for visitors to Kauai includes attending a luau. This is absolutely an event you can attend with little ones, and most places offer highly discounted tickets for young children. Search out a specific luau that adds additional activities for young children with some kid-friendly options on the buffet.

Try a plantation tour. Many have a truck or a train ride your little ones will enjoy, with tasty snacks at the end like pineapples. While a boat may be out, observant toddlers can tour nearby lighthouses to see for miles, and with luck, there may even be surfacing whales on the horizon.

Visit a Park. Don’t forget local parks, where you’ll often find amazing beachside playgrounds and water features designed for tiny hands and feet too.

Things to do in Kauai with ToddlersKauai with kids

For those of you traveling to Kauai with toddlers, I thought I would be a little more specific about some of the things you can do around the island.

Go Hiking – Take a hiking backpack and go hiking. The hiking here is too good to miss just because your kid is too small to do the hike.

Ho’oip’i Falls Trail will be too difficult with small children, but the Sleeping Giant is a good hike for parents that are in good shape and can carry their babies or toddlers in a hiking backpack baby carrier

Hiking backpack Baby Carrier

See the Sights

Waimea Canyon is spectacular and easy to see when traveling with a baby or toddler from the lookout locations.

Kauai promised to be the vacation of a lifetime, and there is no reason you should stay at home just because you have an infant, toddler, or a combination of tiny people in your life. Understand the things you need to look for to navigate a smooth family vacation – and get packing!

Have you ever wondered where the Best Beaches in the United States are?

The USA is a huge country and there are probably thousands of beaches. As you can imagine I have not had a chance to visit them all. I have been blessed to visit many beaches and I must say I never visit a beach I do not love. Based on my experiences thus far I have picked out what I think are the 10 best beaches in the United States. Here they are!Best Beaches In The United States: Don't miss out on our Top 10 Best Beaches picks for the US! These are ideal for beautiful sand and great water!

10 Best Beaches in the United States

Hanauma Bay, Oahu Hanauma Bay State Park

Hanauma Bay is a state park and does require a fee to get in! It is one of only two beaches I’ve included that charge a fee, but it’s such an incredible place it’s worth the fee.

This area was declared a protected marine life conservation area and underwater park in 1967. Here you will find not only a stunning beach but the best snorkeling in Oahu. Be careful to not touch or walk on the coral while visiting. Do not forget that they are CLOSED ON TUESDAYS!

There are lots of wonderful beaches all around Oahu like the beach in front of the Aulani Resort. Be sure to make time to visit several beaches.

For more on Oahu read our Oahu Travel Guide

Poipu Beach, Kauai

Poipu beach
Poipu Beach Kauai

Poipu Beach is on the south part of Kauai. It is somewhat protected making it a safer place for children to swim. One nice thing about this beach is that even if it is cold everywhere else on the island it is almost always warm here.

You will want to be sure and bring your goggles because the snorkeling is excellent. This is definitely one of the best beaches in the United States to visit with your family year-round!

Kauai has many fantastic beaches as well as incredible hiking. Be sure to make time for a hike or two.

To help you plan your trip read our Kauai, Hawaii Travel Guide.

Shell Island

Shell Island
Shell Island

Shell Island is a little island in Florida in the Gulf of Mexico that is basically part of Panama City Beach. To get out there, you will have to get a boat. You can rent a boat like we did or catch a shuttle from St. Andrews State Park for a fee. There are several places that rent boats, including the Tyndall AFB if you’re military.

If you have kids with you, take note that the water on the side that faces towards Panama City Beach, FL is quite calm. You can easily walk over to the other side that faces the open Gulf of Mexico, where the waves are much larger and there are typically more seashells.

For everything you need to know about visiting this area check out our Panama City Beach Travel Guide.

Mexico Beach, Florida

Mexico Beach
Mexico Beach

Mexico Beach is to the east of Panama City and west of Gulf County. This little beach is usually not crowded. It’s a drive to get out here, but once you get here the beach and parking are free. This is a fun spot to collect shells and boogieboard.

If you get hungry, I recommend eating at Toucan’s. Keep in mind that there is next to no lodging here.

To visit Mexico Beach for the day you will want to stay in nearby Panama City Beach where there is a lot more going on: shopping, restaurants, and family-friendly activities.

Update: I am heartbroken to update this. Toucans was completely destroyed during the hurricane as was most of Mexico Beach. They are really hurting down there. If you are able to send donations to one of the local organizations helping that area.

Santa Monica Beach

Santa monica beach
Santa Monica Beach

Located super close to LA is Santa Monica beach, one of the most fun beaches in California. The famous Santa Monica Pier is located here and is covered with rides and vendors. The beach is sprawling and has a gymnastics-like playground on parts of it.

Near the beach, you will find tons of restaurants and shops. Our favorite restaurant near here so far has been M Street Kitchen. Just south of Santa Monica beach is the famous Venice Beach. This has long been one of the best beaches in the United States for many families to visit year-round.

To save a bit of money on your Santa Monica visit read our post, Free things to do in Los Angeles

Coronado Beach San Diego California

Coronado Beach San Diego California
Coronado Beach San Diego California

This beach is a great spot near San Diego to surf, paddleboard, boogie board, or just hang out. There are even tide pools during low tide at Coronado Central Beach.

Myrtle Beach

Myrtle Beach
Myrtle Beach

With 60 miles of beaches, Myrtle Beach in North Carolina has a lot to offer. The beach, of course, is beautiful, but that’s just one of the perks of vacationing here. There are tons of shopping and restaurants. The activities available vary from water sports to kid-friendly shows to amusement & water parks and so much more.

Flamenco BeachFlamenco Beach

Flamenco Beach in Puerto Rico is considered one of the best beaches in the world, so with Puerto Rico being part of the United States, I thought I should include it. It’s known for having shallow turquoise water, white sand, and good diving spots. The beach has bathroom facilities, showers, and bathrooms.

For more help planning a Puerto Rico trip read our post, Things to do in Puerto Rico.

Ecola State Park

Ecola State park
Ecola State Park https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:OregonCoastEcola.jpg

Just north of Cannon Beach is Ecola State Park, one of Oregon’s most beautiful beaches. Here you can enjoy the beach or you can check out miles of hiking trails, and picnic areas. The views are substantial here, including great vantage points for bird and whale watchers. There is a $5 fee to enter this state park. I recommend staying at Surfsand Resort in Cannon Beach when you visit.

Surfsand Resort in Cannon Beach

Jekyll Island Jekyll Island

Jekyll Island, Georgia is home to four different beaches, including the romantic Driftwood Beach and family-friendly Great Dunes beach. Also on the island are historic homes, excellent restaurants, and even a water park.

Depending on when you visit the mosquitos can be horrible. We went in August and they were brutal. Take lots of bug repellant.

Did your favorite beach make the list?

Obviously, I haven’t made it to every beach in the United States and I basically only included some that I’ve been to. If I didn’t manage to include your favorite beach let me know. You can share your favorite/best beach in the comments below. Be sure to tell us why it’s the best!

I hope this list of the best beaches in the United States will inspire you to spend a bit more time on the road visiting the sand and sun this year!

On our family vacation to Hawaii we stayed at the Bali Hai resort in Princeville on the island of Kauai. The north side of the island.  It was a great place. I am posting pictures that I took of the place and  the room we stayed in. Although it was very nice, it certainly does not look like the pictures on their website.

100 3364The grounds were well kept and the pool was in the middle of the property so it was easily walked to.  It really was not within walking distance of anything else. For some reason there are roosters all over the place on the island. There were quite a few living here at the resort. My kids thought it was pretty funny to watch them.

100 3430This is a picture of the living room.  The couch did not make into a bed.  There was a good size kitchen with everything you might need and a small dining area.
100 3432The 2nd bedroom had two twin beds and a full bathroom.  The master bedroom was big and had a huge bathroom with a jacuzzi tub.
100 3367The pool was zero entry and has a sand bottom.  The sand is rough.
100 3370The pool was a good size, but the hot tub was small and not that hot.
Bali Hai Amenities

  • 2 Outdoor Swimming Pools
  • “Organized Activities” Program
  • 3 Outdoor Hot Tubs
  • Clubhouse
  • Outdoor Children’s Pool
  • Tennis Court
  • Picnic/BBQ Area
If we went back we would gladly stay here again, if we could not find something somewhere else on the island.  I think Princeville is too far from Poipu Beach and the west side of the island. I personally would rather stay in Poipu or the west side, because those areas are much warmer. Plus, this resort is a long drive from the airport. Be sure to book a rental car if you are staying here. And don’t wait until you arrive to get a rental car. It’s an island they do run out of cars.

Kauai is one of the most amazing places you can travel without leaving the United States. Without needing a passport, you can be on a stunning tropical island living the good life! It’s nicknamed “the Garden Isle” for a reason!

E komo mai (welcome) to the Garden Isle – Kauai, Hawaii! Traveling solo or with kids, to this island paradise may seem a little daunting, but Kauai offers a wealth of activities for both travelers looking for seclusion and on-the-go socialites. Aquatic fun, land exploration, and a true Hawaiian cultural experience await you on this magnificent tropical gem; your visit will be the perfect combination of relaxation and adventure.

Things to do in Kauai

Kilauea Lighthouse

100 3433
There is a lighthouse on the northeast side of Kauai. It took three times to see it, but it was finally open the third time we went by. We watched for whales here, since this is suppose to be a good spot to see them. We never saw any here. They are not open on Sunday or holidays.

Kauai Hawaii

Poipu Beach img 8902

Noah enjoyed snorkeling for the first time at Poipu beach. He saw many fish and even a sea turtle. This is an awesome area and if we went back, this is where we would stay. The snorkeling was fantastic and it was incredibly warm for January, 80 degrees! We never went to the beach without our Beach Sun Shade and thank goodness we didn’t because he took lots of naps in it.

Lydgate BeachLydgate Beach in Kauai, Hawaii

Another fantastic little spot for snorkeling with kids is Lydgate Beach park. It has a protected little area for children. There’s a huge playground nearby.

Kekaha Beach Park

Kekaha Beach Park is on the west side of Kauai just south and the Navel base. That’s right, I said Navel base! There is a base, Barking Sands Navel base, on the west side of Kauai.

Waimea Canyonimg 8948

If you’ve gone all the way out to the naval base, then you are not far from Waimea Canyon, which is an absolute must-see!

Once you are done checking out the canyon keep driving north. Eventually, you will end up in a section where you can view the Napali Coast. The views are breathtaking.  Napali Coast

Hiking in Kauai

There are so many wonderful places to go hiking in Kauai. Some are more kid-friendly than others. I would say that most are not going to be kid-friendly.

Ho’Oipi Falls

img 8885

Ho’Oipi Falls is a little too difficult to do with small children, but older kids and teens will have no issue accomplishing this hike. There are two water falls to see along the way and lots of places to jump in and swim. I found myself climbing over logs, climbing straight up rocks, and almost have to crawl through branches.

Sleeping Giant

img 8994

Sleeping Giant is a majestc hike with sweeping views of Kauai. This hike will be challenging with small children. Older kids and teens will be able to hike Sleeping Giant. It’s extremely steep and gets quite narrow at times, but super fun.

Best Shaved Ice in Kauai

img 8910

Jojo’s shaved ice creations are massive at the bottom there’s macadamia nut ice cream! Jojo’s is down south and a good place to stop when you are headed to Waimea Canyon.

img 9078 1

Waimea Shaved Ice is also quite wonderful. Pictured here is the Almond Joy, it’s amazing! Waimea shaved ice is served out of a van parked in Kappa.

Where to stay in Kauai

Hilton Garden Inn Kauai img 9092 1

I loved staying at the Hilton Garden Inn in Kauai. It’s a great property with lots of amenities. There are two pools, easy beach access at Lydgate beach, a restaurant on-site and complimentary Mai Tai’s when you check-in. The rooms are spacious and families will have plenty of room. They offer a military discount. Check rates.

Marriott Kaua’i Beach Clubimg 9093

Another lovely place to stay is Marriott’s Kaua’i Beach Club. It is half a hotel and have a timeshare, allowing for lots of room options. The room I had was only suitable for two people. It had one Murphy bed, a kitchenette and a balcony overlooking the water. Check rates.

Bali Hai

Bali Hai Kauai Hawaii

We didn’t spend much time in our room (at Bali Hai a timeshare place), but here it is. I believe it is a Wyndham property now. It was quite nice with a zero-entry into the pool and hot tub. Our room was a two-bedroom, two-bath. The master bedroom had a jacuzzi tub. Check rates.

I don’t think you can see all the roosters that our outside, but they were everywhere! Apparently, Kauai has a rooster problem.
Bali Hai Kauai Hawaii

Kauai Military Cabins

Barking Sands has two-bedroom cabins that military people can stay in for about $70 a night. You could throw a rock and hit the ocean it was so close to it. It is very warm on this side of the island and was Noah’s first chance to boogie board. It’s now one of his new favorite things to do! Jonah also enjoyed playing on the boards!

4 Day Kauai Itinerary

Here is a sample itinerary to help you make the most of your time in Kauai.

Day one:

Visit the majestic Na Pali Mountains on the northern shore of the island. Within the Na Pali State Park, take a hike on the Kalalau Trail. (This trail is currently closed.) After a day of watching cascading waterfalls and seeing several species of tropical wildlife, satisfy your appetite and enjoy local Hawaiian entertainment at The Living Room in Princeville.

Day two:

Explore the Coconut Marketplace in Kapaa – with more than seventy stores to choose from in this Eastside shopping mecca, you’re sure to find something exceptional to bring home. Try the local fare and tropical drinks at Tradewinds while enjoying island music in their open-air atmosphere.

Day three:

Historic Koloa Town on the South Shore was home to Hawaii’s first successful sugar plantation. A few miles away, you’ll find the Spouting Horn Blowhole – one of the most spectacular natural wonders on the island. After the sun sets, treat yourself to fire-roasted Ahi or wasabi-crusted Snapper at the Beach House, where you can take in spectacular ocean views while enjoying exquisitely prepared food.

Day four:

Watch the sunrise on Polihale Beach; this West Shore delight is known for breathtaking views. After the day has begun, take an official Na Pali Snorkeling Adventure or explore hidden sea caves with an expert guide from Captain Andy’s Raft Expeditions.

Leave a little time to do your own exploration, as well. There is so much to do and see on the Garden Isle that you can’t fit it into four days – and speaking with locals is the best way to find your way around the island. If there’s something you’re interested in doing, ask a local how to make it happen; the aloha spirit ensures that you’ll receive a friendly, helpful answer.

Kauai’s shores are filled with adventure and soothing scenery; the hardest thing you’ll do is pack your bags to leave. Take solace in the fact that you’ll be back to the Garden Isle again and again!

Are you looking for a family adventure that’s sure to leave your kids with lasting memories? Then look no further than the north side of sunny Kauai, Hawaii! With breathtaking mountain views, crystal-clear blue waters, and an abundance of activities suitable for all ages, it’s an ideal destination to explore with your children. From snorkeling on one of the many beaches to discovering secret waterfalls in the jungle – there is something new and exciting around every corner! So pack up your swimsuits, beach towels, and don’t forget your camera – it’s time for some unforgettable family fun in paradise!

Kauai, Hawaii is awesome.

For me, it was one of those places you think you would like to go and think you never will. I still can’t believe we got to go. Hopefully, I can go back when the kids are a little older. There were very few things families can participate in when kids are as young as ours were during our visit.

I really loved the fact that we were in a tropical environment in the middle of winter and we were still in America.

Here is an overlook near our hotel, the Bali Hai.
Kauai Hawaii

Anini Beach

This was Anini Beach. You can tent camp here and there were a lot of people camping when we visited. There is not a lifeguard at Anini Beach, but it is considered to be one of the safest beaches on Kauai’s North Shore during the summer months, because of the protective coral reef. Anini has the longest and widest fringing reef in all of the Hawaiian Islands. We did snorkel here, but to be honest, it was not that good. We found much better snorkeling in other parts of the island.

Anini Beach

Anini Beach Kauai, Hawaii

Tunnels Beach

Tunnels Beach on the north side. The beach was nice, but a little cold. There was a huge cave that we walked through. According to my research, Tunnels is a fun surfing, windsurfing, and kite surfing beach, although there was none of this going on when we visited.

Lava tubes formed the many underwater caverns giving Tunnels it’s name as well as an interesting underwater world to explore. We didn’t snorkel here, but apparently, it’s amazing.

Hanalei Beach

Hanalei beach on the north side. This area was not as warm as some other parts of the island. Only 70 degrees in December! To us this was plenty warm. I read online that surfing is really good here, but when we visited there were no surfers.

Overall, the north side of Kauai is a great place to visit whether you are looking for an adventure or just want to relax. There are plenty of activities and sights to keep you busy and the scenery is some of the best on the island. Be sure to add it to your list of places to see on Kauai! Where is your favorite place on the north side of the island?
