If you are debating on visiting Riviera Maya but do not want to stay at an all-inclusive resort, I highly recommend Vidanta Riviera Maya just 25-minutes south of the Cancun airport. They offer a variety of room types to accommodate a wide range of budgets. Plus, with a 1000-acre property, they’ve got tons to do right on-site. From the beautiful stretch of beach to unique dining experiences to impressive shows like Joya by Cirque du Soleil your family will stay entertained for days. I recommend spending at least 4 days here.

Grand Luxxe

If you can afford it, stay in the Grand Luxxe section of the resort. (There are 6 hotels here to choose from.) Here everything is slightly elevated including a private pool area with a hot tub, a well-equipped fitness center, a decadent spa, and access to the exclusive Beach Club. We loved our room. We had access to the connecting lock-out room as well giving us two master bedrooms both had large walk-in showers and huge jacuzzi tubs. The patio was huge with a dining table, lounge chairs, and a shallow pool.

Beach Club

Our favorite place to spend our time was the Beach Club. This high-end pool has room for everyone to feel exclusive. We went here everyday and each time we got our own cabana with lounge chairs and outlets so I could charge my phone. It felt very private, was never crowded, and had a super chill vibe. There’s even a bar cart roaming around ready to make you an Aperol spritz! My only regret is not spending more time here.

Jungala Water Park

Vidanta Riviera Maya Jungala Water Park
Photos by Meagan Wristen

There’s a fairly new waterpark located on property called Jungala. It has large body slides and tube rides. There is a large lazy river with a bar halfway through it so clever. Drinks are an additional cost. There is also a large kid’s area. Our favorite part was the hot tub and our private cabana. The cabana had waitstaff so we could order lunch. Plus, the cabana area also had it’s own private bathrooms which was much appreciated. How often do you see a nice clean bathroom at a waterpark! The waterpark is an additional cost but the hotels golf carts will take you over to the entrace. Buy tickets in advance.

Joya Cirque du Soleil

Vidanta Riviera Maya Joya cirque du Soleil

I had heard there was a Cirque du Soleil show in the area but I was surprised to find out it was part of Vidanta. The show is incredible. I don’t want to give it away but if you’ve seen any of their other shows know this one is just as good. We arrived early to enjoy the 3-course menu for dinner. There’s also an option for dessert and drinks to be added to your tickets. When you do the dinner you are right up close which we liked. Although, I recommend not sitting in the front row unless you want to end up on stage. Purchase tickets in advance.

Wellness Refuge Spa

Vidanta Riviera Maya Spa

Eden and I LOVED the spa so much we spend over 3 hours there. It started with hydrotherapy where we enjoyed a steam room, sauna, hot tubs, foot shower while walking on rocks, heated lounge chairs, and more. After a busy few days, it was a dream for us to be able to slow down. After hydrotherapy, we were taken to our room. We shared a treatment room that kicked off with some sort of interesting Mayan spa welcome. Then we had an 80-minute full body massage that was divine. Adding the spa to your visit is a must. We visited the newer spa in the Grand Luxxe area. I believe there is another spa on the property but did not have the chance to see it. We also didn’t see any monkeys which was a bummer.

Le Petit Chef

Vidanta Riviera Maya Le Petit Chef

Le Petit Chef is an extremely unique dinner show that exceeded all my expectations. There’s a projector that projects the chef onto the table, and he walks you all through your dinner. It’s colorful, entertaining, and educational. Plus, the food was good. I did the pairing, which included one beer, tequila, a cocktail, and some wine. I thought the pairing was just okay, so if you are on a budget, do the dinner only. If you are traveling with kids, this will be one of the highlights of your trip.

Waves n’ Tacos Auténtica Taquería

Vidanta Riviera Maya Antojitos
Photos by Meagan Wristen

One of our favorite eateries in the Salum area of the resort is Waves n’ Tacos Auténtica Taquería. Their tacos al pastor are delicious. Plus, they’ve got 4 or 5 salsas to choose from on every table. Their guacamole is excellent too. The other places to eat were good too, but this just happened to be our favorite. I go to Mexico to eat Mexican food, not hamburgers.

Personal Chef

Private chef experience at Vidanta
Photos by MommyTravels.net

One of the coolest options you have when you stay in a room with a full kitchen is to have a private chef. The chef will come to your room and make breakfast or dinner. We had a chef whip up our breakfast one morning and it was incredible. It was a ton of food and a lovely setup. For breakfast, each person gets to pick a main dish. Everything else you see in the photo comes with the experience too. They will wrap up the leftovers and your fridge will be full.

Salum

The Salum area is a bohemian area mixed with shopping, restaurants, cafes, and sometimes entertainment. We only managed to catch the shops open once since we spent most of our time at the pool or doing other things in the evening. At night, the steps light up in a bunch of different colors and is neat to see.

White Sand Beaches

Vidanta Riviera Maya

Due to the massive size of the resort, the stretch of beach is massive too. I never had to wait for a seat because there are just so many places to hang out and sit. The beach in front of the main pool area has swings, cornhole, and other games. The beach near the Grand Luxxe has tons of chairs and tucked away between the beach and the pool are hammocks and other cozy spots to sit.

All in all, our experience at Vidanta Riviera Maya was wonderful. And I am sure you can see why I chose Riviera Maya as one of my 2025 Best Family Vacation Destinations.

Check current rates for the Grand Mayan portion of the property here. To stay in the same section we did, the Grand Luxxe area, you can check the rates here.

Imagine a place where the Mexican Caribbean kisses the shore, luxury meets artistry, and every family member is happy to be there. Welcome to Hotel Xcaret Arte, an exclusive, award-winning, all-inclusive oasis that’s designed to delight adults (16 and up, because sometimes grown-ups need a break from grown-uping too). Located just 45 minutes from Cancun on a pristine stretch of white sand beach, this resort is a masterpiece of Mexican talent.

We just got back from our vacation to Hotel Arte a few days ago, and all four of us agree it’s one of the best places we’ve ever stayed. We all wish we had stayed 6 nights instead of 4 to really experience everything. With two kids in college and one still in high school, I was thrilled to pick a vacation that pleased everyone.

900 Suites of Pure Bliss

Family Room at Hotel Xcarat Arte

Let’s start with the rooms: 900 suites. Yes, you read that right—900 slices of paradise, each a tribute to Mexican art with décor, furniture, and crafts straight from local artisans. Think of it as sleeping inside an art gallery, but with room service and way comfier beds. The suites offer breathtaking views of the Caribbean Sea, private coves, flowing rivers, and lush gardens. You can see our view behind Eden as she chills on the hammock. All the paties have hammocks!

We stayed in Casa de los Artistas in a family room with an ocean view on the VIP level. Being VIP meant we had a small gym on our floor, so we didn’t have to trek over to the main gym. It was a long walk to the main gym, so I counted it as part of my workout! Our room also had extra amenities like bug spray, sunblock, and after-sun care. We also had a butler who took care of all our reservations.

Artistic Immersion: Five Distinct Casas

Pottery Class at Hotel Xcarat Arte

Now, for the arty bits. This isn’t just a place to stay; it’s a full-on artistic immersion. You’ll find workshops where you can dabble in textiles, painting, pottery, and even Latin dance (because who doesn’t want to cha-cha their way through vacation?). All of the classes are included, there were no extra fees.

 • Casa del Diseño: A textile workshop offering weaving lessons.
 • Casa de la Música: Dance instruction to get your feet moving.
 • Casa de los Artistas: Inspires guests to unleash their inner Picasso.
 • Casa de la Pirámide: Explores Mexico’s rich pottery traditions.

Plus, the resort is a year-round hotspot for artists and events, having hosted everything from exclusive art expos to ballet galas and classical music festivals.

Eden and I took a pottery class, and we now know that she is 100x better at pottery than I am. Mine looked just awful, but look at the cute dog she made!

Culinary Delights: A Feast for the Senses

Food at Hotel Xcarat Arte

Feeling peckish? Well, brace your taste buds for a culinary carnival. The resort boasts nine culinary experiences by some of Mexico’s most renowned and world-class chefs. Dining concepts range from pre-Colombian dishes to contemporary vegan, with a dash of international flair. Highlights include:

 • Kibi Kibi: This is a Lebanese food blended with Yucatan food restaurant and is spectacular. I loved the added touch of bread service at breakfast because it elevated the entire experience.
 • Mercado De San Juan: A thorough buffet with everything you need and everything you never knew you needed. My sons spent a lot of time here. In fact, no matter where we ate they managed to make their way back here to eat again.
 • Apapachoa: This is the Vegan restaurant and it’s phenomenal. The breakfast was the best we had at the resort and Eden’s overall favorite.
 • Cantina Viaypi: A traditional Oaxaca Mexican food restaurant. Some of it was a little too traditional for us but their beans are phenomenal.
 • Arenales: A restaurant down by the river somewhat tucked away. We loved sitting in the swings at lunch even thought it was a bit hot outside.

My only regret from our trip is not making sure to have more of our meals at the resort. Xplor and Xel-ha both have buffet lunches and/or dinner included and we took advantage of it. Although both were good, I wish we had eaten at the resort instead because the food is truly exceptional.

Muluk Spa

After you’ve eaten your weight in gourmet goodies, it’s spa time. The Muluk Spa, nestled among natural rocks and rivers, is not just a spa—it’s a sanctuary. Award-winning and world-class, it offers a comprehensive wellness program to pamper your body, mind, and spirit. Enjoy hydrotherapies, flotation spas, mudrooms, vapor treatments, and even create your own oils and lotions in the Alchemists Studio. Sadly, I didn’t get the opportunity to experience this first-hand, but I read others reviews and I’m jealous.

All-Inclusive Adventure

Xplor

And here’s the cherry on top: complimentary airport transportation and the All-Fun Inclusive® program. This isn’t just about lounging by the pool (though you can totally do that); it’s about unlimited access and transportation to iconic eco-adventure parks like Xel-ha, Xcaret, Xplor, Xavage, and Xenses. Think zip-lining, snorkeling, and all sorts of adrenaline-pumping activities to keep the fun dialed up to eleven.

We managed to make it to three of the parks during our stay. Here’s what we thought of Xplor, our personal favorite: Xplor Park an All-Inclusive Adventure.

Sipping in Style: Bars and Lounges

Speakeasy at Xcarat Arte

Many bars and lounges spread throughout the property, from poolside to rooftop, feature fresh, local ingredients in custom cocktails for a range of high-end contemporary mixology experiences. The speakeasy bar “Deseo” is a hidden gem, offering live jazz entertainment in a cozy, intimate setting. It was a little hard to find but worth the trouble.

If you are looking for a fun shot, order the Scooby Doo shot at the Changarrito Artistas bar.

Events and Celebrations: A Stage for Big Moments

Ecumenical Chapel at Hotel Xcarat Arte

Hotel Xcaret Arte isn’t just a vacation spot—it’s a prime location for big events and celebrations. With two Convention Centers and an entertainment stage hosting up to 2,065 people, it’s perfect for conferences, galas, and more. Plus, the Ecumenical Chapel offers stunning ceremonies for up to 120 guests and mass on Sundays.

Multiple Rooftop Pools

Rooftop pool at Arte

What’s better than lounging by the pool? Lounging by a rooftop pool, of course! Hotel Xcaret Arte takes your pool experience to new heights with multiple rooftop pools, each offering its own slice of paradise. Whether you’re soaking up the sun or sipping on a handcrafted cocktail, these elevated oases provide stunning panoramic views of the Caribbean Sea and the lush, vibrant landscape surrounding the resort. Our favorite pool was on top of Casa de los Artistas because they serve food. The shwarma wrap was excellent as was the guac. However, there is limited seating at this particular pool so get there early to grab a cabana!

There are a few others that serve food but it’s not the same menu. They all have their own menus.

Kayak and SUP in the River

Paddle boarding at Arte Hotel

For those who prefer their relaxation with a side of adventure, Hotel Xcaret Arte offers the perfect way to explore the resort’s natural beauty—paddleboarding or kayaking in the crystal-clear rivers that weave through the property. As you glide along the calm waters, you’ll be surrounded by lush greenery and the vibrant colors of tropical fish swimming beneath you. It’s a peaceful experience that connects you with the natural world in the most serene way possible.

Whether you’re a seasoned paddler or a first-timer, this activity is a must for anyone looking to add a splash of adventure to their stay. They provide life jackets and have cameras where you can take a selfie!

So, if you’re dreaming of a vacation where luxury meets artistry and adventure, look no further than Hotel Xcaret Arte. It’s not just a place to stay—it’s a place to live artfully and playfully. Experience the perfect blend of Mexican culture, art, and nature in a setting that’s as beautiful as it is unforgettable.

If sipping margaritas on a Bali bed while deciding between a deep-tissue massage or a fresh plate of ceviche sounds like your idea of paradise, let me introduce you to Bahia Principe Luxury Akumal. I spent four glorious days there in March on a press trip, and as a travel expert who has lost count of her Mexico visits (and margarita count, let’s be honest), I can confidently say this resort deserves your attention—and maybe even a suitcase with extra room for a souvenir sombrero.

First Impressions: Big Resort Energy, Boutique Resort Feel

Bahia Principe Luxury Akumal is located in between Riviera Maya and Tulum. It is one of four resorts in the Bahia Principe complex like Grand Bahia Principe Tulum a Family-Friendly All-Inclusive Resort where I stayed previously with my kids. When I say this place is sprawling, I mean you could probably hit your daily step goal just walking from your suite to breakfast. But don’t worry, there are golf carts (and a shuttle system) to help you glide around like the VIP you are.

What sets Luxury Akumal apart is its calm, upscale vibe. It isn’t adults-only, but it somehow manages to feel like it is. The resort boasts adults-only areas, private beach sections, and a swim-up bar that practically whispers “order another pina colada.”

All-Inclusive with Zero Sacrifices

Bahia Principe Luxury Akumal

Forget everything you think you know about all-inclusive resorts. This is elevated luxury: think freshly grilled lobster, mixology-level cocktails, and staff who remember your name (and your drink order).

Guests of Luxury Akumal enjoy access to the other three resorts: Grand Tulum, Grand Coba, and Luxury Sian Ka’an. This means more restaurants, more pools, and yes, more excuses to never leave the resort.

The Rooms: Renovated and Ridiculously Comfortable

I stayed in one of the newly renovated Junior Deluxe Swim-Up Suites, and let me tell you—waking up, slipping into a swimsuit, and sliding straight into the pool is a vibe I could get used to. The rooms are modern, with earthy tones, spacious bathrooms, and those magical blackout curtains that practically demand you sleep in.

Foodie Heaven

Let’s get to the important stuff: the food.

Yum Restaurant (Luxury Akumal)

This is your breakfast go-to, and yes, the name is accurate. The buffet includes everything from tropical fruit to custom omelets to chilaquiles that could inspire poetry.

Katok (Luxury Akumal)

Think Mexican flavors with a twist. I had dinner here on the first night and tried everything I could pronounce (and a few things I couldn’t).

Ku’uk (Luxury Akumal)

Ku’uk at Bahia Principe Luxury Akumal

A mix of local ingredients and fine-dining flair. It felt like dining in a five-star restaurant without the pressure of putting on heels.

Don Pablo (Grand Tulum)

An elegant dining experience with impeccable service. This is the spot to pretend you’re in a James Bond movie—order the filet.

Maiko (Luxury Sian Ka’an)

Japanese-Peruvian fusion. I repeat: Japanese. Peruvian. Fusion. Surprisingly delicious, extremely creative, and completely worth the reservation.

And if you’re wondering, yes, 24-hour room service is included. You’re welcome.

The Spa: Actual Heaven

Spa at Bahia Principe Luxury Akumal

After days of exploring and eating like royalty, a spa visit is mandatory. The Bahia Spa is serene, beautifully designed, and the massages are borderline spiritual. I opted for a Mayan-inspired treatment that involved hot stones, essential oils, and possibly a brief nap.

The hydrotherapy circuit was equally impressive, and I floated out feeling like a buttered croissant: warm, soft, and very happy.

Activities: From Ancient Ruins to Fire Shows

One of the best parts about staying at Luxury Akumal is the variety of activities included (or easily arranged).

EcoBahia Tour and Workshop

EcoBahia Tour and Workshop

This was one of my favorite experiences. The EcoBahia Foundation is genuinely impressive—their work in coral reef conservation and environmental education goes beyond token greenwashing. During the tour, I learned about local flora, fauna, and how the resort repurposes waste in creative ways. It’s both eye-opening and oddly reassuring to know your vacation spot is trying to save the planet.

PGA Riviera Maya Golf Club

Whether you’re a golf lover or just like wearing cute golf skirts (guilty), this course is stunning. Lush greens, palm trees, and a peaceful atmosphere make it a great midday outing.

Origen Show & Fire Show

Origen at Bahia Principe Luxury Akumal

Held at Don Raices Theatre, the Origen Show is part storytelling, part Cirque du Soleil, and totally entertaining. If you have energy after dinner, don’t skip it.

Fire show at Bahia Principe Luxury Akumal

The optional fire show at Hacienda Doña Isabel is another must-see. There’s something about watching flames dance in the night sky that pairs beautifully with a rum cocktail.

Kid Amenities

Grand Bahia Principe Tulum

For those traveling with kids there’s a lot of kid amenities that you have access to in the Grand Tulum section of the resort. This area of the resort is named Zama, which was the original name of Tulum’s walled city. This area has an indoor/outdoor kid’s club, water playground, splash pad, and a playground with ziplines, tunnels, slides and more.

Insider Tips

 • Download the Bahia Principe App: You can book dinner reservations, check activity schedules, and avoid getting lost. Tech-savvy and sanity-saving.
 • Pack Bug Spray: The eco tour is lovely. The mosquitos? Less so. In case you forget it they likely have some for you.
 • Bring Dressy Clothes: A few restaurants have dress codes. Nothing extreme—just don’t show up in your pool cover-up.
 • Say Yes to the Swim-Up Suite: Trust me. Once you’ve had your morning coffee poolside, you’ll never go back.
 • Make sure you have a map: I got lost repeatedly it’s so big, so I highly recommend having a map handy either with the app or a paper copy.

Final Thoughts: Would I Go Back?

Mariachi at at Bahia Principe Luxury Akumal
Mariachi at at Bahia Principe Luxury Akumal photo by Meagan Wristen

Absolutely. Bahia Principe Luxury Akumal delivers everything it promises and then some. It’s luxurious without being pretentious, peaceful without being boring, and it offers enough activities and dining options to keep even the pickiest traveler entertained.

Whether you’re planning a romantic getaway, a wellness retreat, or a girls’ trip, this resort ticks all the boxes. And as someone who travels for a living, that’s not a compliment I hand out lightly.

So pack your favorite swimsuit, leave your worries behind, and let Bahia Principe Luxury Akumal do what it does best: spoil you rotten in paradise.

If you’re looking for a super Mexican adventure while in the Riviera Maya area, look no further than Xcaret Park. This eco-archaeological wonderland is a one-stop destination for nature lovers, thrill-seekers, and culture enthusiasts alike. With over 50 attractions, it’s nearly impossible to do everything in a single day—but don’t worry, I’ve rounded up the must-do experiences to make the most of your visit!

Swim Through Xcaret’s Underground Rivers

Xcaret park
Photo from MommyTravels.net

One of the most iconic experiences at Xcaret is floating through its crystal-clear underground rivers. These natural waterways, surrounded by lush vegetation and limestone formations, are both relaxing and awe-inspiring. Whether you choose the Blue River, Mayan River, or Manatee River, you’ll be immersed in a refreshing and scenic journey that feels straight out of a dream.

We did not have snorkel gear, and we saw no one with snorkel gear in the rivers, but according to some readers, there’s a lot to see underwater. Apparently, we made a mistake.

There are a lot of places to stop and take photos along the river, and you can get some really good shots.

Visit the Replica of a Traditional Mexican Cemetery

Xcaret Park Cemetery Replica

For a unique cultural experience, don’t miss the Mexican Cemetery at Xcaret. This vibrant and intricately designed space is a replica of an authentic Mayan and Mexican burial site, celebrating the country’s deep-rooted traditions around life and death. With colorful tombs, artistic details, and symbolic elements, it’s a fascinating and beautiful tribute to Mexico’s heritage.

I had always wanted to see a cemetery like this and take a photo without being disrespectfu,l so I was super happy to finally make it here.

Explore Wildlife and Natural Beauty

Xcaret is home to an impressive array of wildlife and lush landscapes. Stroll through the butterfly pavilion, marvel at the jaguar and puma habitats, and get up close with flamingos, sea turtles, and exotic birds. Nature lovers will also appreciate the coral reef aquarium and the stunning beach and lagoon areas, perfect for soaking up the sun and unwinding.

Experience the Xcaret México Espectacular Show

No visit to Xcaret is complete without attending the Xcaret México Espectacular, a breathtaking nighttime performance that takes you on a journey through Mexico’s history, traditions, and folklore. With over 300 performers, dazzling costumes, live music, and dramatic storytelling, this show is an absolute must-see and the perfect way to wrap up your day at the park.

Pro Tips for Visiting Xcaret

 • Arrive early to make the most of your day—there’s a lot to see and do!
 • Wear biodegradable sunscreen to protect the environment and marine life.
 • Bring water shoes for the rivers and cenotes.
 • Stay for the night show—it’s worth it!
 • Consider the Xcaret Plus package for access to extra amenities like buffet meals and locker rentals. Unlike many of the other parks like Xplor this one is not an all-inclusive experience that includes meals and drinks.

Final Thoughts

Xcaret Park is an unforgettable mix of adventure, culture, and natural beauty that showcases the very best of Mexico. Whether you’re swimming in underground rivers, exploring ancient traditions, or witnessing the magic of the Xcaret México Espectacular, every moment is a new discovery. So, pack your swimsuit, bring your sense of adventure, and get ready for an experience you’ll never forget!

Riviera Maya is hands down one of the best destinations for a family vacation—think stunning beaches, ancient ruins, jungle adventures, and some of the tacos your kids will ever eat. Whether your crew is into snorkeling, ziplining, or watching tiny animated chefs cook their dinner, this slice of paradise has something for everyone. So, pack the reef safe sunscreen, and let’s dive into the best family-friendly activities in Riviera Maya.

1. Snorkeling in Crystal-Clear Waters

Xel-Ha

If your kids have ever wanted to swim with sea turtles or explore vibrant coral reefs, Riviera Maya is the place to do it. Akumal Beach is famous for its friendly sea turtles, while Xel-Há, an all-inclusive natural water park, offers an incredible snorkeling lagoon with tropical fish galore. Plus, at Yal-Ku Lagoon, even little swimmers can enjoy a calm snorkeling experience without worrying about big waves.

2. Cenote Hopping – Nature’s Swimming Pools

Gran Cenote Tulum

Cenotes—those magical freshwater sinkholes—are basically nature’s version of a water park, minus the long lines. Gran Cenote, Cenote Dos Ojos, and Cenote Azul are some of the best for families, offering crystal-clear waters, small caves to explore, and spots to jump in (for the more daring kids and parents). Pro tip: Bring water shoes because those limestone rocks are no joke!

3. Climbing Ancient Mayan Ruins

Coba Mayan Ruins

Teach your kids a little history while also letting them burn off some energy! Coba is one of the last Mayan ruins you can still climb—if your family is up for the challenge, the view from the top of Nohoch Mul Pyramid is worth every step (If they will let you climb it. It’s not always allowed.). If you prefer something a little more accessible, Tulum’s cliffside ruins offer stunning ocean views, and Chichen Itza, one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, is a must-visit (even if you can’t climb it).

4. Eco-Parks: Adventure for All Ages

Xplor

Riviera Maya is home to some of the best eco-parks in the world, offering everything from ziplining to underground river exploration. Xcaret is like the Disneyland of nature parks, featuring Mayan cultural shows, wildlife encounters, and underground rivers to float through. Xplor is perfect for adrenaline junkies, with off-roading ATVs, ziplining, and cave swimming. For something more relaxed, Xel-Há combines snorkeling, lazy rivers, and cliff jumping. Pick one, or do them all!

5. Le Petit Chef – A Dining Experience Like No Other

Vidanta Riviera Maya Le Petit Chef

Dinner and entertainment? Yes, please! Le Petit Chef at Vidanta is an interactive dining experience where a tiny animated chef (projected onto your plate) prepares your meal right before your eyes. It’s fun, engaging, and, most importantly, keeps kids entertained while you enjoy a multi-course meal. A win-win for parents and picky eaters alike!

6. Joya by Cirque du Soleil

For a night of jaw-dropping acrobatics, music, and storytelling, Joya by Cirque du Soleil is an absolute must. This show, set in a lush jungle theater, is filled with aerial stunts, comedy, and incredible visuals. Bonus: You can opt for a dinner-and-show package, making it a full evening of entertainment. Purchase tickets in advance!

7. Jungala Aqua Experience

Vidanta Riviera Maya Jungala Water Park

If your kids love water slides but you’re not into the chaotic energy of a massive theme park, Jungala Aqua Experience is the answer. This boutique water park at Vidanta Riviera Maya offers thrilling slides, a lazy river, and a wave pool—all without overwhelming crowds. Plus, the cabanas here are next-level luxury, meaning parents can sip cocktails while the kids race down slides. Buy tickets in advance.

8. Off-Roading and Jungle Adventures

Off roading at Selvatica

If your family likes things a little wild, consider an ATV jungle tour. Companies like Selvatica (57 minutes away) and Aventuras Mayas (11 minutes) offer tours where you can ride through the jungle, zipline over treetops, and cool off in hidden cenotes. It’s the perfect mix of adventure and natural beauty—and trust me, kids LOVE getting a little muddy.

9. Rio Secreto

Rio Secreto

Río Secreto might just deserve a spot among the world’s wonders. This underground river is packed with thousands of jaw-dropping stalactites and stalagmites, making you feel like you’ve stepped into a prehistoric time capsule. Once you descend into the cave, it’s pitch black—except for the light from your helmet. You’ll walk and swim through the cave, marveling at the ancient rock formations. Tickets cost $92 and include food and drinks (transportation costs extra).

You’ll be geared up with a helmet, wetsuit, life jacket, and water shoes—all provided. Lockers and changing rooms are available, and yes, you have to wear the wetsuit. Be sure to bring a beach towel and clothes to change into afterward.

You can’t take your own photos or videos inside the cave (because, well, it’s dark), so if you want to relive the experience, you’ll need to buy their professional photos. After your cave adventure, you’ll refuel at a buffet, because nothing says “I conquered an underground river” like a solid meal.

Plan the Ultimate Family Getaway

Riviera Maya isn’t just another beach destination; it’s a playground for adventure, culture, and relaxation, all rolled into one. Whether your family is into snorkeling, exploring ancient ruins, dining with tiny chefs, or flying through the jungle on a zipline, you’ll find no shortage of unforgettable experiences. So, grab the kids, book that flight, and get ready for a family trip filled with adventure, laughter, and probably a few “Mom, can we move here?” moments.

There is an insane amount of cenotes throughout the Mexican Caribbean area, many of which are easily accessible and open to visitors. Some are free or fairly cheap and some are part of a more extensive park which can cost substantially more. From a relaxing swim to extreme dives, cenotes offer a rich history and otherworldly beauty. With a surplus of cenotes throughout the Mexican Caribbean, visitors can enjoy this unparalleled experience again and again.

Cenotes are a sinkhole you can access and swim in, pronounced seh-NO-tay. Cenotes have a deep history of health and wellness in the Mayan community. Mayans thought the waters were believed to purify and protect the soul, thus cenotes have served as the site for traditional rituals.

The Mexican Caribbean area is large, so I’ve broken these down into the various areas where you can find them. Some of these are two hours from Cancun, but I used Cancun as the main point because that is where the main airport is. This whole area is stunning, so it would be a shame if you only went to Cancun. Hopefully, this list will inspire you to go out and explore.

I recommend getting the car at the Cancun Airport, it will make it way easier to get to these. This entire area is easy to drive around in. Get a Cancun car rental for $11 a day!

After this, it’s a short trek through the jungle. If you’re diving here, the dive tables are near the parking lot, so most people load up with their dive gear and do the walk fully equipped.

Stone walls linger beside wooden staircases leading to a bridge swing and zip line – all accompanied by scurrying iguanas for added ambiance.

17. Cenote X’keken

Cenote X’Keken is an incredible spot with a legendary backstory! Legend has it, the cenote was discovered when a farmer’s pig fell into it while walking one day. During daylight hours, this majestic place of wonders allows for rays of light to traverse its limestone cave and create some stunning photos you won’t want to miss out on. And if that wasn’t enough — take in cool refreshing water surrounded by humidity along with small black fish swimming around; who knew heat and sweat could be whisked away so easily!?

Cenote X’Keken’s ethereal blue waters are breathtaking to behold. Containing a medley of dramatic effects, including ropes for the adventurous swimmers and a wooden walkway crossing one side – this special place is certainly worth visiting! The colors you see may look filtered or artificial, but don’t be deceived as it turns out they were created naturally by sunlight refracted through an overhead hole with some minor help from lighting inside the cenote.

20. Cenote Suytun

Cenote Suytun is the cenote you typically see epic photos of on social media. Its most notable features include a monolithic cave filled with turquoise water and an idyllic stone pathway that leads out to the middle of this fascinating cenote.

It’s located just a couple of meters off the main road 180 going East towards Coba and Tulum. It costs 120 pesos to visit. A cave cenote like Cenote Suytun is unique since it has a hole in the roof which allows natural light to enter the cave. Although a few hanging lights illuminate the cave’s interior, the steps themselves are quite dark.

On the stone path extending out into the turquoise waters, you can walk and take some amazing photos. From various angles, it is possible to view Cenote Suytun. The most popular view is from the top of the staircase.

Cenote Suytun is best visited early in the morning, starting at 9:00 – try to be first in line if you want the perfect photo with no one else in the picture. Tourists swim in the water and everyone wants to take photos on the platform in the middle, so it can get very crowded.

Opening Hours: Monday-Sunday from 9:00-17:00

Admission: 120 MXN (around $6 USD)

21. Cenote Dzitnup

Cenote Dzitnup is a limestone cave with a single opening in the ceiling. It’s free.

22. Cenote Oxmán

Cenote Oxmán

Riviera Maya’s Cenote Oxmán is an adventure to not miss! Its enormous sinkhole, natural pool, and especially its epic rope swing make it a top destination for thrill-seekers. Make sure you experience the fun early in the morning before everyone else arrives – your photos will be so much better minus any sun glare caused by too much sunlight on the water later during the day time.

Children can enjoy this one safely as well with a little help from adults getting them up there first! It is approximately three meters below the top of the wall before you drop into the Oxmán Cenote. There are a few different options to enter the water. You can jump off the edge of the platform, use the rope swing, or use the staircase.

I highly recommend bringing goggles to Oxmán Cenote if you want to explore below the surface of the water. The water is about 45 meters deep, and there is great visibility.

Opening Hours: Monday-Sunday 8:00-18:00

Admission: 80 MXN (around $4 USD)

Cenotes near Chichen Itza

23. Cenote Ik Kil

Looking up at the partial hole above cenote Ik Kil in Riviera Maya.

Cenote Ik Kil is located in the northern center of the Yucatán Peninsula and is part of the Ik Kil Archeological Park near Chichen Itza. It is open to the public for swimming from 8 am – 5 pm for 80 pesos per person. A wooden ladder is built into Ik Kil Cenote makes entering and exiting easier.

This structure is almost perfectly circular and has an interior concrete staircase, making access very convenient. Several viewpoints are worth stopping at while you’re walking down the steps. Leaves and vines hang from the top of the cenote and cover the walls until they reach the water.

Take a swim to the middle of the natural pool, float on your back, and marvel at the open-air circle above! It’s the perfect opportunity for you to sit back, relax, and take it all in.

Cenote Ik Il has changing rooms, restaurants, and toilets, which is rare as most smaller cenotes do not have these facilities.

Opening Hours: Monday-Sunday from 8:00-17:00

Admission: 80 MXN ($4 USD)

Cenotes in Playa del Carmen

24. Cenote el EdenCenote Eden

Also known as Cenote Ponderosa To get here drive south on the 307 highway from Playa Del Carmen. You will pass Puerto Aventuras and then about 5 minutes past there, you will see the main entrance to Barceló Hotel on the left. There is a large Cenote Jardin Del Eden sign and you follow the dirt road back to the cenote. If you take a cab they will drop you off at the entrance. From the entrance, you will walk 1/8 mile down a dirt road to the gate where a Mexican family lives. They charge 2 dollars per person to access. From there you will walk another 1/2 mile to the cenote. They have a few snorkel sets for $3 per person. There were people scuba diving here. The park offers bathrooms and life vest rentals, as well as small palapas where you can enjoy a picnic. There is no food or drink available on site, so be sure to pack some snacks. Alcohol is not permitted.

Opening Hours: Sunday-Friday from 7:00-17:00; Closed Saturdays (Sundays will be the busiest!)

25. Cenote Azul

Cenote Azul

The beautiful open Cenote Azul lies approximately halfway between Playa Del Carmen and Tulum. Cenote Azul is renowned for its clear blue water (hence its name), which makes it perfect for swimming.

Given its natural beauty and close proximity to both Playa del Carmen and Tulum, you can imagine how busy it can get. However, its stunning clear blue waters and the mix of dark and white rock formations underwater make it a worthy contender on the list of best cenotes in Riviera Maya.

There are bathrooms, changing rooms, and a small shop available on-site.

Opening Hours: Monday-Sunday 6:30-17:30

Admission: 120 MXN (around $6 USD)

A 15-minute drive away and only accessible via guided tours due to safety concerns – the tours last approximately two hours. – safety helmets and life jackets included with admission. You’ll learn all about this gorgeous underground formation from well-trained guides as they lead you through the caves (but beware: Bats may be lurking!). It’s certainly not for the faint of heart but an eye opening adventure that is sure to leave lasting impressions on those brave enough to venture out into its depths.

Opening Hours: Monday-Saturday from 9:00-15:00; Sunday 9:00-13:00

Admission: 500 MXN (around $26 USD) – GUIDED TOUR ONLY!

Cenotes in Coba

27. Cenote Choo-Ha

Choo-Ha, Tamcach-Ha, and Multun-Ha are a series of small cenotes close to the Mayan site of Cobá in central Yucatán Peninsula. All of them are accessible to the public for swimming. Choo-Ha has a small entrance of only about 3 by 4 meters and it is filled with stalactites and stalagmites.

28. Cenote Pac Chen

Rappelling at Pac Chen
Rappelling at Pac Chen with Mike’s Road Trip

Pac Chen is a cool activity where you visit a cenote, kayak, zipline, and more. You have to rappel down into the cenote which makes it pretty unique. It’s part of a private property tour experience, so the only way to get to it is by tour. Nearby are the Coba Mayan Ruins.

Cenotes in Cozumel

I recently found out that there are tons of cenotes in Cozumel but I’ve only been to two so far, so those are the ones I am sharing.

29. Cavernas de Jade Jade Cenote

Also known as Cenote Chempita this is a delightful spot with unbelievable stalactite formations. This lovely oasis has orchids and palm trees. This is a stop on several of the tours you can go on, including the ATV adventure with Wild Tours. It is possible to get here yourself, but the road is very much off-roading at times.

30. Cenote El Aerolito

Cenote El Aerolito Cenote El Aerolito is easy to get to, free, and accessible to everyone. This one has mangroves, Noah’s favorite.

Cenotes in Holbox

31. Yalahau

According to legend, divers in this cenote emerge feeling ten years younger. This is another one that is not easy to get to. The Mayans believed that cenotes held powerful suhuy ha’, or virgin water, an Cenote El Aerolito origin of life. In addition, for centuries these aquifers served as the main source of cold, naturally filtered water to nearby communities. Various minerals that filtered through the water over millions of years have created a backdrop of impressive stalagmites and stalactites. If you’ve gone all the way to Holbox you will definitely want to know about other things to do in Holbox.

If you are jumping off cliffs into cenotes you might want to consider getting travel insurance. I recommend Travelex insurance, because of the variety of options.

The post 7 Winter Getaways – Escape the Cold! appeared first on Mommy Travels.

]]>
Winter has its moments—hot chocolate, cozy fires, and snow-covered landscapes that look straight out of a Hallmark movie. But let’s be real: the charm fades the second you have to scrape ice off your windshield or slip on a patch of black ice. If the cold has overstayed its welcome, it’s time to trade the frost for my favorite footwear, flip-flops. Here are seven sun-drenched destinations that will warm your soul (and your toes) this winter.

1. Belize

Naia Resort and Spa on the beach

Forget the frostbite! Belize calls you to its warm embrace with a symphony of coral reefs, crystal-clear waters, and adventures that sound like something out of a child’s imagination book. Snorkeling in Belize isn’t just swimming; it’s like being teleported into a National Geographic documentary, surrounded by a kaleidoscope of marine life. And if you prefer terra firma, the jungle awaits with open arms. Remember, it’s not sweating; it’s your body’s way of saying, “Thank you for the vitamin D.”

2. Panama

Panama City Panama

Panama, where the engineering marvel of the Panama Canal competes with the natural wonders of its jungles. It’s a place where you can hike through rainforests in the morning and explore the cosmopolitan streets by night. Want to feel like Indiana Jones? Visit an indigenous village. (Don’t climb the waterfall! I feel on my face.) Craving for culinary adventures? The food scene here might just make you consider permanent residency. Just a heads up: the jungle might not have Wi-Fi, but it promises a better connection.

We recommend staying at the Bristol Panama in the city or at Decameron Panama at the beach.

3. Nevis: Not Just Another Caribbean Island

Nevis Peak Hike

If the Caribbean was a royal family, Nevis would be the elegant, less flashy sibling who doesn’t need the spotlight to shine. Its beaches whisper tales of serenity and seclusion, while the historic ruins tell stories of a time gone by. Nevis is the place to go when you want to disconnect and recharge, where the only thing you’ll be uploading is your feet on a hammock.

Wondering where to stay? Check out: Best Nevis Resorts

4. Tampa Bay, Florida: Sunshine State of Mind

4-day Tampa Bay Weekend Getaway

Ah, Florida. You might think you know it, but Tampa Bay is here to surprise you. It’s where you can have breakfast with giraffes (don’t worry, they prefer leaves over pancakes) and scream your lungs out on a roller coaster before lunch. The Florida Aquarium offers a dive into the marine life without getting wet, and the seafood? Let’s just say you’ll understand why the pelicans look so smug. Tampa Bay is where winter goes to retire.

5. The Bahamas: Choose Your Own Tropical Adventure
Cat Island Bahamas

The Bahamas are like a box of chocolates for beach lovers – you never know what you’re gonna get, but it’s all delightful. Cat Island is your go-to for quiet beaches where the waves gently kiss the shore. For those who prefer their beach days with a side of luxury, Nassau’s mega-resorts offer opulence and maybe a celebrity sighting or two. It’s a place where the hardest decision you’ll make is between the beach chair or the hammock.

6. Riviera Maya

Riviera Maya Grand Luxxe Vidanta (1)

Riviera Maya is home to what I happen to think are some of the best beaches in the world. Start your trip by staying at one of the massive resorts on the beach like Xcaret Arte, Grand Palladium Kantenah Riviera Maya, or Vidanta Riviera Maya.

If you decide you want to leave the resort head out and explore the ancient Mayan Ruins of Tulum or Chichen Itza, then cool off in one of the region’s stunning cenotes—these underground swimming holes look like something out of a fairytale. If you love marine life, snorkeling in Akumal Bay gets you up close with sea turtles, while the Great Mayan Reef (the world’s second-largest barrier reef) is a diver’s dream. And when the sun sets, Playa del Carmen’s nearby 5th Avenue is the perfect place to shop, sip margaritas, and dance the night away.

7. Costa Rica

See monkeys in Costa Rica

Costa Rica is where you go when you want adventure, wildlife, and beaches—all in one trip. Zip-line through the cloud forests of Monteverde, spot sloths and monkeys in Manuel Antonio National Park, or soak in the volcanic hot springs of Arenal. If surfing is on your bucket list, Tamarindo is one of the best places to learn. For something unique, take a night tour to see bioluminescent waters glow as you paddle through. And, of course, Costa Rica’s motto is “Pura Vida” (Pure Life), so expect to slow down, relax, and live in the moment.

Wrapping It Up

Whether you’re looking for adventure, history, relaxation, or a mix of all three, these destinations promise one thing: no winter blues in sight. So, grab your swimsuit, book that flight, and trade the snow for sun. After all, the only ice you should be dealing with is in your tropical cocktail.

Get Travel Insurance

Unfortunately, there are a lot of things that can go wrong on any trip. Be prepared for the worst with travel insurance. We use Travelex or Safety Wing (often cheaper).

Book Flights

I use Skyscanner to find flights. I use it so much, I wrote an entire guide to finding cheap flights with Skyscanner! Another option for finding deals is FlightHub.

Book a Place to Stay

I recommend using Expedia.com or Hotels.com for most hotel bookings. I prefer to book directly with Marriott when I stay there because of their excellent military discount.

If you prefer staying in a vacation rental instead, I recommend VRBO. If you are looking for a hostel, I use HostelWorld.

Choose Activities and Tours

To find great activities in any area I use Viator. If we are visiting a city with lots of popular attractions I always check CityPass, PogoPass, and GoCard to see if they have discount cards available. Groupon also tends to have a lot of local travel deals.

When I want to book a full-on multi-day tour I use TourRadar. They’ve got fantastic weekly deals. If going somewhere in Mexico or the Caribbean, I use Apple Vacations.

Rent a Car or Get a Lyft

More often than not, Lyft is cheaper than Uber. Use my Lyft link for an $18 credit! For a car rental in any country, I recommend Hertz or Discover Cars.

Save Money on Gas

Upside a free app gets you cash back on gas! Use promo code RV2Q2 to get an extra 15¢/gal bonus on your first purchase.

Get a Visa

I use iVisa to get all of my Visas.

The last couple of years we’ve been blessed to go to so many new locations that we’d never been to before. I am one of those people that will go anywhere and try anything and basically love everywhere I go but I know that not everyone feels that way. So narrowing down where I think other families should go to as well was tough. I know that many families can only afford one major vacation a year and sometimes only one major vacation every few years. I’ve factored this in when choosing destinations. All of these will be worth the money you spend to be there and provide you with new incredible experiences. Plus, all of these locations are safe.

Panama

Panama City Panama

Panama is a destination that surprised and impressed me from start to finish. Not only is the Panama Canal fascinating to learn about, it brings in people from all over the world which means the foodie scene in Panama is incredible from Panamanian, Chinese, Peruvian, and more. Besides incredible meals they got a range of activities. One day you can see monkeys and sloths and the next tour Casa Viejo the Unesco Heritage site that’s not only hauntingly beautiful to see but is plentiful in shopping, eateries, and rooftop bars. In Panama City we recommend staying at Bristol Hotel.

Once you are done seeing the city you can head out to the beach. You can choose to stay on the Pacific or the Atlantic or do both! When we went to the beach we stayed at Decameron Panama on the Pacific side. If you prefer the Caribbean where the snorkeling is amazing head to the island Bocas Del Toro or to Casa Cayuco where your stay benefits an indigenous community.

Sri Lanka

If you’ve followed MommyTravels at all over the years you already know our entire family loves Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka has it all: a fascinating history with the ruins of ancient fortresses in the sky, stunning beaches, super fast ziplines, Sri Lankan food, and much more. One day you will be on an elephant safari and the next day you will be in the mountains learning firsthand at a tea factory. This one destination has so much to explore that I think you should spend at least 10 days here. Here are a few articles to help you plan a trip of a lifetime.

Gatlinburg, Tennesee

Gatlinburg

Gatlinburg, Tennessee was another destination that I found super surprising. Talk about underrated. In all my years of traveling, no one ever recommended going here. When I did finally go I loved every minute of it. The hiking and fly fishing in the Smokey Mountains is outstanding. If you do not want to go hiking on your own I suggest booking a tour with Smoky Mountain Guides.

The town itself is absolutely charming and you might even see a bear while you are there. For a super fun family day head up to Anakeesta to do a tree top walk, play on their extensive playground, ride a mountain coaster, and much more. Plus, the food is soul-satisfying at pretty much every restaurant in town. For families on a budget the camping options here are extensive. For those that prefer a hotel I recommend staying at Embassy Suites Gatlinburg Resort.

Belize

Belize was on my bucket list for two decades before I made it there and my goodness it exceeded all expectations. With a perfect mix of adventure, culture, and relaxation Belize is just awesome. With its crystal-clear waters teeming with vibrant marine life, it’s a haven for snorkelers and divers, especially at the world-famous Great Blue Hole. Beyond the sea, Belize boasts ancient Mayan ruins like Xunantunich and Caracol, where history comes alive among lush jungles.

Add in eco-lodges, wildlife sanctuaries, and the warm hospitality of its people, and you have a destination that caters to thrill-seekers and serenity-lovers alike. Whether exploring caves, lounging on pristine beaches, or tasting authentic Creole and Garifuna cuisine, Belize offers an unforgettable tropical escape. I recommend staying at Naia Resort and Spa in Placencia Belize, their spa is incredible.

Nevis

Nevis is an actual hidden gem. Any time I recommend Nevis the person has never heard of it. From hiking Nevis Peak and relaxing on pristine Pinney’s Beach to exploring historic plantations and dining on fresh, locally sourced cuisine, every moment feels special. Here are 17 Things to do in Nevis.

I stayed at quite a few Nevis resorts while I was on the island and all of them where a completely different experience from the next. With its commitment to sustainable tourism and lack of large-scale development, Nevis lets you reconnect with nature and experience the Caribbean as it was meant to be—authentic, vibrant, and blissfully serene.

Riviera Maya

The Riviera Maya area just south of the super popular Cancun is gorgeous and more low key. If you want a perfect beach vacation head here. In 2024, I found myself down here 3 separate times each time staying somewhere different. What they all had in common was that I had the best time each time I was there.

There’s so much to do in the area from cenotes to adventure parks to expansive beaches to Mayan Ruins. Plus, the resorts here are massive. You can stay at an all-inclusive like Xcarte Arte or Grand Palladium Kantenah Riviera Maya or at an regular hotel like Vidanta Riviera Maya that still has everything you need.

Western Montana

Hiking in Western Montana

With almost everyone watching Yellowstone, Western Montana easily makes the list. Montana is just as beautiful as the show depicts it to be. Even more so in person. While here you have to stay at a ranch and get your cowboy on. There are many to choose from and I’ve stayed at two I can recommend: High Tail Ranch and Alpine Falls Ranch. The High Tail Ranch even has a few days a year that you can pay to help herd Bison! Also while here you have to go fly fishing (often included in your ranch stay), go hiking, and visit a hot spring.

La Paz, Mexico

La Paz, Mexico, stands out as a top destination for 2025, offering a unique blend of stunning natural wonders and cultural vibrancy. Located along the Sea of Cortez, it’s a paradise for ocean lovers, where you can swim with whale sharks, kayak through turquoise waters, or explore secluded beaches like Balandra. On land, the city charms visitors with its art-filled Malecon, authentic Mexican cuisine, unique hotels, and a relaxed atmosphere.

La Paz also serves as a gateway to many eco-adventures, making it an ideal destination for travelers seeking both relaxation and excitement like us. Whether you’re chasing sunsets on an atv or diving into marine adventures, La Paz is the perfect blend of culture and coastal magic.

Germany’s Romantic Road

Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Germany

When Eden and I were in Germany we ended up changing our plans after randomly coming across the Romantic Road in Germany when we went to Rothenburg ob der Tauber. (Pictured above.) We were both immediately mesmerized by what we were seeing. That’s why this is the perfect destination for 2025, offering a unique escape into the heart of Europe.

This route winds through enchanting medieval towns, rolling vineyards, and historic castles, making every stop feel like stepping into a storybook. From the iconic Neuschwanstein Castle to the charming streets of Rothenburg ob der Tauber, the journey is a feast for the eyes and soul. Whether you’re exploring cobblestone alleys, indulging in traditional Bavarian cuisine, or cycling along scenic paths, this region is a dream destination that blends history, culture, and breathtaking landscapes into one unforgettable adventure.

Turkey

Turkey offers an unparalleled mix of history, adventure, and natural beauty that captivates visitors of all ages. From the magical hot air balloons of Cappadocia to the thermal travertine pools of Pamukkale, and the ancient ruins of Ephesus to the vibrant bazaars of Istanbul, every stop is a blend of cultural richness and jaw-dropping scenery.

Whether you’re exploring underground cities, splashing in turquoise waterfalls, or wandering the cobbled streets of Antalya’s Old Town, Turkey seamlessly combines learning with fun. Add in delicious kid-approved cuisine and warm, welcoming locals, and Turkey is easily a bucket-list destination.

We hope that where ever life takes you in 2025 it’s the best vacation ever. If you end up taking one of our recommendations tell us about it in the comments below!

Hey there, fellow traveling families! If you’re planning your next adventure with the kiddos to the beautiful Riviera Maya in Mexico, you’re in for a treat. With 20+ years of globe-trotting under my belt, and many of those trips with my own kids, I’ve got some fantastic recommendations for family-friendly resorts in this slice of paradise. No matter where you stay the whole family will have a great time and enjoy beautiful white-sand beaches. These resorts are in no particular order.

1. Grand Luxxe at Vidanta

Grand Luxxe Vidanta Riviera Maya

Staying at Grand Luxxe at Vidanta was wonderful from start to finish. The rooms are fabulous. My kids are teens so having all that space made such a significant difference. Plus, it was nice to have a private plunge pool out on the huge patio. The fitness center for this section of the resort had everything you could need. The private pool had wait service and was a peaceful environment. There was also a beach area just for this section too. One of the best parts of staying here is all the things to do. They are home to the Cirque du Soleil show Joya, Jungala waterpark, and they have the Le Petit Chef dining experience here! FYI: this is not an all-inclusive resort. Check current rates on Expedia.

2. Eco-Friendly Fun: Sandos Caracol Eco Resort

Sandos Caracol Eco Resort (1)

As a family that loves nature, we adored Sandos Caracol Eco Resort. It’s an eco-friendly paradise where you can immerse yourself in the local flora and fauna. The resort organizes eco-tours, and there’s even a natural cenote where you can swim. The kids were enthralled by the wildlife we could see monkeys and coatis from our balcony, and the eco-themed activities were both fun and educational. There are so many activities you never have to leave the resort including a waterpark, hiking trails, bikes, a cenote, beach (a bit rocky), multiple pools, activities, night entertainment, and Mayan ruins. Check current rates.

Their gourmet dining options are also a big hit – even with the pickiest little eaters! For teens, there is a teen’s club with video games and other things to do. the fitness center is quite large which many teens will also appreciate. Check current rates and book your stay today!

4. Adventure Awaits: Xcaret HotelHotel Xcaret

Now, for an experience that blends culture, nature, and fun, Xcaret Hotel is your go-to. With unlimited access to the Xcaret parks like Xplor, every day is a new adventure. We particularly loved all the pools and the evening shows, some of which showcase Mexican culture and history. It’s an educational and entertaining experience for the entire family. If all of your kids are older like mine you can stay next door at Xcaret Arte. It’s an adult’s only but the age starts at 16. Check current rates.

5. All-Inclusive Bliss: Iberostar Paraiso LindoIberostar Paraiso Lindo

Lastly, Iberostar Paraiso Lindo offers an all-inclusive experience that takes the stress out of vacation planning. Are you looking for some serious heart-pumping, adrenaline-fueled fun while visiting the Cancun area? Well, look no further than Xplor Park! Located in Playa del Carmen, south of Cancun, this park offers everything from zip-lining to underground river rafting and even jungle off-roading. As a frequent thrill-seeker, I was naturally intrigued by all Xplor had to offer. All four of us loved it! So much, we went twice.

You can visit during the day or during the evening for a nighttime experience called Xplor Fuego. If you are staying at Xcarat Hotel or Hotel Arte Xcarat admission is included in your stay. They even have a bus that will pick you up at the hotel and take you to the park.

Ziplines
Ziplining at Xplor

First up, the zip lines. If you’ve got a fear of heights, you might want to sit this one out. But for those brave enough to take on the challenge, it’s an absolute must. The lines are long enough to give you a real rush but not so long that you start to question your own mortality like Noah sometimes does when we are doing this type of stuff. And the best part? Just when you think it’s over, you fly into a pool of water and end up soaked. (Personally, that’s my least favorite part.)

We like to do the zipline as the sun is setting. The views are incredible. Plus, once it’s dusk there’s fire ring you can zipline through and it makes for a great photo. You will definitely want to purchase the photos here. All throughout the park are photo spots for you to capture great images.

Toboganxote Water Ride

Toboganxote Water ride at Xplor

This is a totally insane water ride that I could only ride once because it scared the crap out of me. All three of my kids loved it. We rode it while it was still light outside but you can also ride it in the dark.

Toboganxote Xplor Water Slide

You have to have four people in a tube and it’s quite the climb up to the top of the ride. The 135 ft climb is worth it though. The Xplor website describes the ride better than I can:

“Go down four different types of descents, starting with the sphere and moving as if you were a pendulum to then reach the half-wave and rise with the inertia to the highest point and continue towards the tube that leads to the whirlpool. Immediately, you will leave at full speed towards the 72-ft (22 m) vortex, the largest in Latin America, to follow the zigzag route towards the final part.”

It was that highest point that is beyond scary. I still don’t understand how we didn’t flip out of the tube.

Underground River Rafting

Next on the itinerary was the underground river rafting. If you’re looking to cool down from the hot Mexican sun, this could be your favorite experience. At night it is pretty dark down there. It was so dark that none of my photos came out and the video I took is took dark to share.

You have to walk through a cave to get to it and I got kind of lost, hence this photo.

LOST IN A CAVE

Jungle Jeep Tour

Offroading at Xplor Fuego

With all the activities being fairly physical, it was a welcome break to just sit back and enjoy the ride. Granted the ride isn’t exactly smooth. If you’ve got neck issues skip this activity.

If you did this activity more than a few years ago you’ll be happy to learn that they expanded the drive and it’s quite long now! So long, we would change drivers half way thru next time!

JEEP INTO THE WATER

One thing to keep in mind is if it has rained recently. One of the times I was here they had a lot of rain and when I hit a puddle a bit too hard I totally soaked us!

Hammock Splash
Hammock splash at Xplor

Lastly, we have the hammock splash. It’s exactly what you think it is. You slide down a short zip line in a mesh hammock and you end up in the water. Sometimes you can race. It just depends on how many workers they have.

Food Included

Xplor is an all-inclusive package which means food is included too. There is an extensive buffet with good food as well as a snack station where you can get tamales and cookies. From what I could tell this park is alcohol free.

Conclusion

If I could sum up my Xplor experience, I’d say it was pure exhilaration. This park is a must-visit for adventure seekers looking for that next-level experience. Be sure to wear water shoes, a swimsuit, waterproof everything including a waterproof cell phone holder, bring and towel, and your sense of humor! You’re sure to walk away with some great memories and an even greater appreciation for living life to the fullest. So, what are you waiting for? Get ready to Xplor!

Pro-tip: Regardless of when you visit, if you’re not wearing waterproof mascara, you might end up looking like a sad, soggy raccoon. I know because that’s what I looked like.

Best Cenotes Near Cancun
