Cancun, where the margaritas are stronger than your willpower and the beaches are practically illegal they’re so pretty. Whether you’re staying in the Hotel Zone, venturing out to Tulum, or chasing cenotes like they’re Pokémon, renting a car in Cancun might be your golden ticket to ultimate freedom (and fewer overpriced taxis).

But renting a car in Cancun comes with its own set of quirks, surprises, and the occasional speed bump—literally. So buckle up: here’s everything you need to know before you get behind the wheel in paradise.

Is Renting a Car in Cancun Worth It?

Royal Uno Cancun beach

Let’s be honest: Cancun wasn’t exactly built for walking. Unless you’re perfectly content staying in one resort with zero plans to leave, having a car gives you freedom to roam. Want to eat tacos in Valladolid? Visit Chichén Itzá at sunrise? Find a secret beach in Akumal? You’re going to want a car.

Why rent a car in Cancun?

  • Day trips galore: Tulum, Playa del Carmen, Isla Blanca, cenotes, ruins—Cancun is just a jumping-off point.
  • It’s usually cheaper than multiple guided tours or round-trip taxis. I took a 20 minute taxi to Tulum the last time I was in the area and it was $35. So, to go to town and back was $70 USD. Right now, Uber is banned in the Cancun aarea so taxis are more expensive.
  • No waiting around for the world’s slowest shuttle van. All of the Xcaret Parks will pick you up, but it will be super early like 6AM because you go to a massive transportation area to switch buses. It’s a good system but adds hours to your day.
  • Your playlist, your rules (and yes, that means blasting Bad Bunny on repeat).

What to Know Before You Book

Speed boat and snorkeling tour cancun

1. The price you see is not the price you pay

That $6/day car on your travel site? It’s clickbait. Once you arrive at the rental counter, you’ll be told that doesn’t include the mandatory third-party liability insurance (and sometimes, not even the steering wheel).

2. Book with full coverage upfront (or come armed with proof)

Sites like DiscoverCars or Expedia let you bundle insurance and actually see the real price. If you plan to decline coverage and use your credit card insurance, you’ll need:

  • Proof of coverage (a letter from your credit card company)
  • Valid driver’s license from your home country. No international driver’s license needed if you’re from the U.S., Canada, or most EU countries.
  • Passport (you’ll need this for ID at pickup).
  • Credit card with available credit for the deposit (we’re talking $1,000–$2,500 USD hold in many cases—yes, even if you’re just renting a Nissan Versa).
  • Minimum age: 21 at most rental agencies. Some will charge a “young driver fee” if you’re under 25.
  • Confidence, patience, and maybe a prayer

3. Manual cars are common

Automatic cars are available, but you’ll usually pay more—and they book up fast. If your stick-shift skills are rusty, best to reserve early.

4. Airport rentals are easiest

Cancun International Airport has loads of rental options. Just be prepared for a shuttle to the lot and at least 30–45 minutes of paperwork (and upsell attempts).

Tips for Driving in and Around Cancun

Cancun Hotel Zone
  • Speed bumps (topes) are everywhere and stealthier than a jaguar in the jungle. Slow down or risk launching your car into orbit.
  • Toll roads (cuotas) are typically in great shape—use them if heading out of town. Keep cash on hand (pesos preferred).
  • Gas stations are full-service. Tip the attendant about 10–20 pesos and always watch that the meter starts at zero.
  • Download offline maps. Cell signal gets spotty outside the city, specifically south of Tulum. Google Maps and Apple Maps both work well when downloaded in advance.

Parking in Cancun

  • Hotel Zone: Free parking at many hotels and restaurants, but it can be limited. So far, I’ve never stayed at an all-inclusive resort in Cancun that charges for parking.
  • Downtown Cancun: Easier to find parking, but be wary of parking meters and “friendly helpers” who offer to “watch your car” (for a small tip, of course).
  • Don’t block driveways or park near yellow curbs—those are tow truck magnets.

FAQ

Live Aqua Cancun

Is it safe to rent a car and drive in Cancun?

Yes—if you use common sense. Stick to well-traveled routes, avoid driving at night, and watch for speed bumps that appear out of nowhere like ghosts. Tourist areas and highways are generally safe. Don’t leave valuables in the car unless you want to donate them to the local “finders keepers” initiative.

Is renting a car in Cancun expensive?

It can be if you don’t do your homework. The daily rate looks cheap online, but mandatory insurance adds $15–$30 USD/day. Add in taxes, extra drivers, and child seats, and it adds up. That said, it’s often cheaper than booking multiple tours.

Can I get a rental car in Cancun?

Yes, and easily! Cancun has major rental agencies like Hertz, Alamo, Europcar, and local companies like Easy Way. Rentals are available at the airport and in the Hotel Zone. Book in advance on DiscoverCars or Expedia, especially during high season (December–April).

Do you need a car to get around in Cancun?

If you’re just chilling at your all-inclusive, nope. But if you’re hoping to explore Yucatán beyond the infinity pool, renting a car in Cancun gives you way more options than relying on taxis, colectivos, or overpriced resort tours.

Final Thoughts

Renting a car in Cancun is your passport to the real Riviera Mayajungle adventures, hidden cenotes, tacos from roadside stands, and beach towns with no shoes required. Just remember to bring your license, your patience, and a healthy skepticism for $3 a day cheap rental promises.

Oh—and maybe avoid the one-way street in downtown Cancun that everyone drives the wrong way down anyway. You’ll see what I mean.

If you’re looking for a super Mexican adventure while in the Riviera Maya area, look no further than Xcaret Park. This eco-archaeological wonderland is a one-stop destination for nature lovers, thrill-seekers, and culture enthusiasts alike. With over 50 attractions, it’s nearly impossible to do everything in a single day—but don’t worry, I’ve rounded up the must-do experiences to make the most of your visit!

Swim Through Xcaret’s Underground Rivers

Xcaret park
Photo from MommyTravels.net

One of the most iconic experiences at Xcaret is floating through its crystal-clear underground rivers. These natural waterways, surrounded by lush vegetation and limestone formations, are both relaxing and awe-inspiring. Whether you choose the Blue River, Mayan River, or Manatee River, you’ll be immersed in a refreshing and scenic journey that feels straight out of a dream.

We did not have snorkel gear, and we saw no one with snorkel gear in the rivers, but according to some readers, there’s a lot to see underwater. Apparently, we made a mistake.

There are a lot of places to stop and take photos along the river, and you can get some really good shots.

Visit the Replica of a Traditional Mexican Cemetery

Xcaret Park Cemetery Replica

For a unique cultural experience, don’t miss the Mexican Cemetery at Xcaret. This vibrant and intricately designed space is a replica of an authentic Mayan and Mexican burial site, celebrating the country’s deep-rooted traditions around life and death. With colorful tombs, artistic details, and symbolic elements, it’s a fascinating and beautiful tribute to Mexico’s heritage.

I had always wanted to see a cemetery like this and take a photo without being disrespectfu,l so I was super happy to finally make it here.

Explore Wildlife and Natural Beauty

Xcaret is home to an impressive array of wildlife and lush landscapes. Stroll through the butterfly pavilion, marvel at the jaguar and puma habitats, and get up close with flamingos, sea turtles, and exotic birds. Nature lovers will also appreciate the coral reef aquarium and the stunning beach and lagoon areas, perfect for soaking up the sun and unwinding.

Experience the Xcaret México Espectacular Show

No visit to Xcaret is complete without attending the Xcaret México Espectacular, a breathtaking nighttime performance that takes you on a journey through Mexico’s history, traditions, and folklore. With over 300 performers, dazzling costumes, live music, and dramatic storytelling, this show is an absolute must-see and the perfect way to wrap up your day at the park.

Pro Tips for Visiting Xcaret

  • Arrive early to make the most of your day—there’s a lot to see and do!
  • Wear biodegradable sunscreen to protect the environment and marine life.
  • Bring water shoes for the rivers and cenotes.
  • Stay for the night show—it’s worth it!
  • Consider the Xcaret Plus package for access to extra amenities like buffet meals and locker rentals. Unlike many of the other parks like Xplor this one is not an all-inclusive experience that includes meals and drinks.

Final Thoughts

Xcaret Park is an unforgettable mix of adventure, culture, and natural beauty that showcases the very best of Mexico. Whether you’re swimming in underground rivers, exploring ancient traditions, or witnessing the magic of the Xcaret México Espectacular, every moment is a new discovery. So, pack your swimsuit, bring your sense of adventure, and get ready for an experience you’ll never forget!

There is an insane amount of cenotes throughout the Mexican Caribbean area, many of which are easily accessible and open to visitors. Some are free or fairly cheap and some are part of a more extensive park which can cost substantially more. From a relaxing swim to extreme dives, cenotes offer a rich history and otherworldly beauty. With a surplus of cenotes throughout the Mexican Caribbean, visitors can enjoy this unparalleled experience again and again.

Cenotes are a sinkhole you can access and swim in, pronounced seh-NO-tay. Cenotes have a deep history of health and wellness in the Mayan community. Mayans thought the waters were believed to purify and protect the soul, thus cenotes have served as the site for traditional rituals.

The Mexican Caribbean area is large, so I’ve broken these down into the various areas where you can find them. Some of these are two hours from Cancun, but I used Cancun as the main point because that is where the main airport is. This whole area is stunning, so it would be a shame if you only went to Cancun. Hopefully, this list will inspire you to go out and explore.

I recommend getting the car at the Cancun Airport, it will make it way easier to get to these. This entire area is easy to drive around in. Get a Cancun car rental for $11 a day!

And if that wasn’t enough — take in cool refreshing water surrounded by humidity along with small black fish swimming around; who knew heat and sweat could be whisked away so easily!?

Cenote X’Keken’s ethereal blue waters are breathtaking to behold. Containing a medley of dramatic effects, including ropes for the adventurous swimmers and a wooden walkway crossing one side – this special place is certainly worth visiting! 20. Cenote Suytun

Cenote Suytun is the cenote you typically see epic photos of on social media. Its most notable features include a monolithic cave filled with turquoise water and an idyllic stone pathway that leads out to the middle of this fascinating cenote.

It’s located just a couple of meters off the main road 180 going East towards Coba and Tulum. It costs 120 pesos to visit.  A cave cenote like Cenote Suytun is unique since it has a hole in the roof which allows natural light to enter the cave. Although a few hanging lights illuminate the cave’s interior, the steps themselves are quite dark.

On the stone path extending out into the turquoise waters, you can walk and take some amazing photos. From various angles, it is possible to view Cenote Suytun. The most popular view is from the top of the staircase.

Cenote Suytun is best visited early in the morning, starting at 9:00 – try to be first in line if you want the perfect photo with no one else in the picture. Tourists swim in the water and everyone wants to take photos on the platform in the middle, so it can get very crowded.

Opening Hours: Monday-Sunday from 9:00-17:00

Admission: 120 MXN (around $6 USD)

21. Cenote Dzitnup

22. Cenote Oxmán

Cenote Oxmán

Riviera Maya’s Cenote Oxmán is an adventure to not miss! Its enormous sinkhole, natural pool, and especially its epic rope swing make it a top destination for thrill-seekers. Make sure you experience the fun early in the morning before everyone else arrives – your photos will be so much better minus any sun glare caused by too much sunlight on the water later during the day time.

Children can enjoy this one safely as well with a little help from adults getting them up there first! It is approximately three meters below the top of the wall before you drop into the Oxmán Cenote. There are a few different options to enter the water. You can jump off the edge of the platform, use the rope swing, or use the staircase.

I highly recommend bringing goggles to Oxmán Cenote if you want to explore below the surface of the water. The water is about 45 meters deep, and there is great visibility.

Opening Hours: Monday-Sunday 8:00-18:00

Admission: 80 MXN (around $4 USD)

This structure is almost perfectly circular and has an interior concrete staircase, making access very convenient. Several viewpoints are worth stopping at while you’re walking down the steps. Leaves and vines hang from the top of the cenote and cover the walls until they reach the water.

Take a swim to the middle of the natural pool, float on your back, and marvel at the open-air circle above! It’s the perfect opportunity for you to sit back, relax, and take it all in.

Cenote Ik Il has changing rooms, restaurants, and toilets, which is rare as most smaller cenotes do not have these facilities.

Opening Hours: Monday-Sunday from 8:00-17:00

Admission: 80 MXN ($4 USD)

From the entrance, you will walk 1/8 mile down a dirt road to the gate where a Mexican family lives. They charge 2 dollars per person to access. From there you will walk another 1/2 mile to the cenote. They have a few snorkel sets for $3 per person. There were people scuba diving here.   The park offers bathrooms and life vest rentals, as well as small palapas where you can enjoy a picnic. 28. Cenote Pac Chen

Pac Chen is a cool activity where you visit a cenote, kayak, zipline, and more. You have to rappel down into the cenote which makes it pretty unique. It’s part of a private property tour experience, so the only way to get to it is by tour.  Nearby are the Coba Mayan Ruins.

Cenotes in Cozumel

I recently found out that there are tons of cenotes in Cozumel but I’ve only been to two so far, so those are the ones I am sharing.

29. Cavernas de Jade Jade Cenote

Also known as Cenote Chempita this is a delightful spot with unbelievable stalactite formations. This lovely oasis has orchids and palm trees. This is a stop on several of the tours you can go on, including the  ATV adventure with Wild Tours. It is possible to get here yourself, but the road is very much off-roading at times.

In addition, for centuries these aquifers served as the main source of cold, naturally filtered water to nearby communities. Various minerals that filtered through the water over millions of years have created a backdrop of impressive stalagmites and stalactites. If you’ve gone all the way to Holbox you will definitely want to know about other things to do in Holbox.

If you are jumping off cliffs into cenotes you might want to consider getting travel insurance. I recommend Travelex insurance, because of the variety of options.

Do you want to plan a trip that the whole family will enjoy, even the teenagers? Let’s face it, the easiest way to make any family vacation successful is to keep the kids happy! To get an idea of what kind of vacation a kid would most enjoy I ask a group of experts aka my kids.

Noah, Eden, and Jonah have been traveling with me their entire lives. So far the three of them have been to at least 22 countries, 4 continents, and almost every state in the United States. Needless to say, when I ask them what the best family vacations were, they had more than a few opinions!

They quickly fired off an assortment of places we have been. It was interesting to hear what they picked, some of them I knew, but other ones were a complete surprise. After some serious conversation with them, we’ve narrowed it down to 17!

Top 17 Family Vacations You will Never Forget!

1. SingaporeSingapore

Singapore is in all of our top ten picks. My oldest, Noah considers Singapore to be a utopia because of its cleanliness and orderliness. Oddly enough, we were only in Singapore for two days, making it one of the shortest stays we have done anywhere. It only took one day for us to fall in love with this city. We recommend walking around Marina Bay where the architecture is insane and definitely visit some parts of the Marina Bay Gardens. I can assure you that your kids have never seen anything else like this! The kid’s favorite hotel here is the Fairmont Singapore. For more ideas on what to do and where to find the best milkshake see my article: Singapore Travel Guide.

2. CancunCancun Family Adventure

Cancun has so much going on, and don’t worry, it’s safe. We spent a week there and basically had a non-stop adventure! The entire area is set up well to accommodate any kind of family and literally any type of budget. Families will appreciate luxurious, all-inclusive resorts with kid’s clubs and teen clubs. While the kids are off doing their own thing parents can head to a spa or the bar. There isn’t a bad beach anywhere in the area, so plan to spend at least two full days beach bumming.  While you are there, be sure to see Mayan Ruins, swim in a cenote, eat lots of Mexican food, and go ATVing.

For a list fun family things to do in Cancun check out this post: 12 Adventurous Things to do in Cancun. I recommend staying at The Grand in Cancun or at another one of the  11 Best All-inclusive Resorts in Cancun for Families.

If at some point you head over to Cozumel (you totally should), check out my post: 13 Things to do in Cozumel. I recommend staying at Allegro Cozumel.

3. ThailandThings to do in Phuket Thailand with Kids

Thailand is absolutely incredible and I wasn’t surprised it landed in my kids top three places. You can basically go anywhere in Thailand and have an interesting experience. I recommend visiting at least these three places when you go: Phuket, Bangkok, and Chiang Mai. Although they each have some similarities they are completely different experiences.

Phuket

Phuket is one of Thailand’s islands and it’s extremely kid friendly. My kids thought taking a Thai cooking class was cool and they loved going to the beaches and interacting with elephants and tigers. To find the elephants on the beach check out my post: Swimming with Elephants in Thailand. And for more help planning your trip to Phuket see my article: 5 Day Phuket Itinerary with Kids.

Bangkok

Bangkok is massive so there are loads and activities. The kids loved biking through the city despite the heavy traffic and they were thrilled when we stumbled across monstrous milkshakes. To read more about taking Bangkok to kids, check out my article: Two Days in Bangkok with Kids.

Chiang Mai

Chiang Mai is an easy city to get around and it has tons to see and do. The city has an incredible night market where you and your kids could shop for hours. Here you will find interesting things to purchase like leather journals, bracelets, and tuk-tuks made out of soda cans. There is an elephant sanctuary where families can care for elephants and of course the food is outstanding! I recommend staying at the Shangri-la and taking a food and city tour by bike. Learn more about visiting Chiang Mai with kids in my article: 4 Things to do in Chiang Mai with kids.

4. New York CityNYC Street Art

New York City is currently Noah’s #1 and in Eden’s top 3 and in my top 15. The kids love the many dessert experiences here like Serendipity and  Black Tap. Both places have outrageous over-the-top desserts. They all enjoy hanging out in Central Park and Bryant Park, both parks have lots of free activities. At Bryant Park, kids can play kubb, while parents grab a drink at the little outdoor bar there. In Central Park, there are multiple playgrounds.

Visiting the 9/11 memorial is a must and if the kids are 10 or older tour the museum. Kids enjoy touring the Statue of Liberty, but not necessarily Ellis Island. If you do, go to Ellis Island to look for your family’s name on the wall. If you want to do a bus tour I recommend The Ride, especially if your kids are teens or tweens. I think going to a Broadway show is a must, but this is expensive and not worth it if your kids hate musicals or might possibly sleep through it. Good plays for kids are Wicked, Lion King, and Phantom of the Opera.

Remember the further out you can plan a trip to New York the cheaper the trip will be. Here are 15 Ways to save money in NYC.

We’ve been to NYC more times than we can remember. Check out our New York City Travel Guide to help you plan your own epic NYC getaway!

5. Oahu, Hawaii

Views from Diamond Head hike
Views from the top of Diamond Head a kid-friendly hike in Oahu.

Hawaii is another place that all three kids agree on and Oahu is their top island followed by Kauai. On Oahu, their favorite thing to do is sit at the pool or sit on the beach.

The kids recommend hanging out at the beach on North Shore to check out the waves and do some shopping. While you are up there have shrimp from Giovani’s Shrimp truck and get shaved ice at Matsumoto Shave Ice. If you feel like getting active rent a paddleboard at Sea N Surf and paddle up the Anahulu River and look for sea turtles. The last time we went we saw five huge sea turtles.

Also, fun in Oahu is parasailing in Waikiki and hiking to the top of Diamond Head. When you get done hiking Diamond Head, stop by Shimazu Shave Ice for massive shaved ice.

For more help planning your family’s Oahu vacation read our Oahu Travel Guide

I highly recommend staying at Disney’s Aulani if possible.

6. OrlandoVolcano Bay at Universal Orlando

Orlando would probably make any kid’s list. With it being home to Disney World, Sea World, Discovery Cove, and Universal Studios a family could spend a month and do something different every single day. Universal Orlando is a must once each kid is tall enough to ride all the roller coasters and the new water park, Volcano Bay is fantastic. Besides the theme parks, there are all sorts of other fun things to do like swamp tours through alligator-infested waters, knight tournaments at Medieval Times, and within a short drive lots of beaches.

7. LondonLondon with Kids

London also made it high on the list of the kid’s favorite places. We visited during Thanksgiving a few years ago and everything we did was awesome. There is so much to see and do that you can easily spend a week or two here and never run out of activities. Some of their favorite things were seeing the play Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, eating at Borough Market, and doing the Tower of London tour. Both boy’s least favorite thing to do is the bus tours. I personally appreciated how many free things there were to do in London. For more London ideas and tips, see my article: London with Kids.

8. Negril, Jamaica

Snuba at Beaches Negril
Snuba at Beaches Negril

Negril, Jamaica is Jonah’s #1 pick, and if I was his age, I think this would possibly be my #1 too. We recommend staying at Beaches Negril. This is an all-inclusive resort geared specifically for families. Highlights of staying here include:

  • Sesame Street parade and BBQ party where families can dance with the characters, DJs lead dances, flame throwers perform, and more.
  • Ice Cream Machine – The kids loved the ice cream machine which they visited a minimum of three times a day. (Don’t judge me, it’s vacation!)
  • Snuba – Even kids can snuba at Beaches Negril and they do not have to have any experience to do this. The instructors are fabulous and it’s an activity the kids will never forget.
  • Multiple pools, a lazy river, a water playground, and hot tubs.
  • Miniature golf
  • Video game lounge
  • Kid’s club

9. Vail, ColoradoVail, Colorado with kids

Vail, Colorado is another destination that is enjoyable year-round. During the summer the kids enjoy biking around town, riding horses around the mountain, and visiting the Epic Discovery adventure park set up on the mountain. In the winter the skiing is excellent. My kids have skied since they were little and appreciate the extensive skiing found in Vail. If you do not ski, this is a great place to learn.  For more info, check out our Vail Travel Guide.

10. Silvies Valley RanchKidding Experience at Silvies

Visiting a dude ranch is a completely unique vacation. You can have an experience as a family that just can’t be had unless you are on a working ranch. Here you can shoot guns, interact with baby goats, hit the spa, experience gourmet dining, participate in a cattle round-up, and much more. They even have four golf courses on the ranch. Golf lovers will flip out over the reversible golf course that’s right I said reversible! With a little bit of everything, your family is sure to have an incredible time. To get a feel of the overall ranch read about our Silvies Valley Ranch Experience.

11. GreeceGreece with kids

Greece is an epic experience because let’s face it, there’s no other place on earth like it. It basically doesn’t matter what part of the country you visit, you will never have a bad meal, you will experience history and culture like never before. I can state this as a fact because we’ve traveled all over Greece and it’s all been wonderful.

Athens

Chances are high that one way or another a Greek vacation is going to take you through Athens at some point. Plan to spend at least a day here so you can visit the Acropolis before heading out to the islands. At night during the sunset dine at Savvas, their rooftop overlooks the Acropolis. Hotels can be difficult to get for a family, you may want to stay in an Airbnb.

Mykonos

A one of a kind city and gorgeous beaches await you in Mykonos. Teens and parents alike will love Mykonos City full of white-washed buildings. Also, if you can get a sitter or if your kids are old enough to stay at the hotel alone plan to go out. Mykonos has one of the best nightlife experiences in the world.

Santorini

Here you will have the opportunity to see things you’ve never see before like Red Beach. Perissa, the black beach is also worth visiting if you’ve never seen one before. There are two towns built into the sides of the island, both of which are worth spending time in, Fira and Oia. In Oia, you will see one of the greatest sunsets in the world.

Thessaloniki

Thessaloniki is from biblical times and many of their historical sights have withstood the test of time. (Okay, I know what you are thinking. Yes, all of Greece is from biblical times.) They basically have ruins or a gorgeous church around every corner. The food scene is excellent here. For a list of things to see and do check out my post: Thessaloniki on a Budget

Kassandra

Can’t afford to splurge on the islands? Head here instead. Here you will be greeted with that famous aqua water and glorious beaches. Go shopping in Pefkochori and grab lunch at Agora Beach Bar. I highly recommend staying at Alexander the Great Beach Resort in this area.

12. Australiafeeding kangaroos at the Great Ocean Road Wildlife Park

If you can get yourself to Australia, do it! Australia is just as fabulous as everyone says it is. There are so many varied experiences to be had throughout the country.  Try to plan a minimum of 9 days in the country. More than two weeks would be better.

Whitsunday Islands

If swimming the Great Barrier Reef is on your bucket list, then this should be your first stop. Whitehaven Beach should also be on your bucket list. It’s one of the most beautiful beaches in the world.

Melbourne

If you’ve got a family of foodies, Melbourne is sure to delight. They have the most over-the-top, whimsical food creations you’ve likely ever seen. In between beautiful meals stop by the Brighton Beach Bathing Boxes and the graffiti alleys. The alleys in Melbourne are really cool.

Great Ocean Road

One of the top road trips in the world is driving the Great Ocean Road. Along the way, you can stop at dozens of scenic overlooks and take in the magnificent rock formations like Loch Ard Gorge and the 12 Apostles. You can enjoy one of the many nice beaches where kids can swim and play in the sand. Plus, there are animal encounters. Pull over to look for koalas in the trees and feed the birds at Kafe Koala. Be sure to stop at the Great Ocean Road Wildlife Park, where you can hand-feed kangaroos.

13. TexasSan Antonio

We are originally from Texas so it was no surprise that Texas made the list. The kids have been all over Texas and they recommend eating lots of Tex-Mex food and visiting the following cities: Dallas/Fort Worth, Austin, San Antonio, and Corpus Christi.

San Antonio

San Antonio has a ton of stuff for families to do. Here you will find a massive zoo, Fiesta Texas theme park, the famous San Antonio River Walk, and just outside of town is Schlitterbahn the #1 water park in the world. When visiting plan at least one full day at Schlitterbahn, half a day at the river walk, and float the Comal river. Our favorite restaurants in San Antonio currently are Ocho, Toro Kitchen + Bar, and Rita’s on the River.

In San Antonio, I recommend staying at Hotel Emma.

Plan your entire trip with our San Antonio Travel Guide.

Dallas/Fort Worth

The Dallas, Fort Worth area is packed with stuff to do for families. Over in Fort Worth will love the rodeo at the stockyards. Be sure to go when they have bull riding. Also found in the stockyards is a fun maze and Texas-themed shopping. Plus, they do a daily cattle drive. Our favorite restaurants in Dallas include Meso Maya for dinner and El Jordan Cafe for breakfast. Just north of Dallas is Addison, TX which is jammed packed with great restaurants.

14. HondurasRoatan Honduras

Honduras is easily one of our top vacations, according to me. Unfortunately, the kids remember very little of the trip. I recommend going to Roatan and Copan. These two places are no where near each other and two extremely different experiences. What they do have in common is affordability!

Roatan

Roatan is one of the Bay Islands and along the 2nd best barrier reef in the world. The reef is near the shoreline making it extremely easy for kids to snorkel. Jonah was 4 when we visited and he was able to snorkel. Also fun here is zip lining and paddleboarding.

Copan

Copan is a Honduran city that borders Guatemala. Here you can go horseback riding up a mountain, go zip lining on one of the longest zip lines in the world, and visit an incredible hot spring.

15. Panama City Beach

go karting at Cobra Adventure Park in Panama City Beach
Go-karting at Cobra Adventure Park in Panama City Beach

Another family favorite in Florida is Panama City Beach. The beach has soft, powdery, white sand. It isn’t as big as many of the beach towns, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t a lot to do. Go mini-golfing and go-carting, spend the day at the beach, or shop around at Pier Park. Spend one day bopping around Scenic 30A, where you will find tiny beach towns like Seaside or Rosemary. Renting some bicycles is a perfect way to explore this area. Another interesting spot worth venturing out to is Sandestin’s Baytowne Wharf. Here, families can indulge in boutique shopping, zip-lining, ropes courses, an arcade, and unique eateries.

Use our Panama City Beach travel guide to plan your entire vacation.

16. Costa RicaLa Roca Canyoning - Rappeling in Costa Rica

Costa Rica is super cool country with a wide variety of things to do. The food was consistently good, the activities were exciting and the people were so nice. Whether rafting down a volcano’s raging rivers in a tube near La Fortuna to chilling at a beautiful beach on the Pacific or the Atlantic everyone is going to enjoy the country. Costa Rica Travel Guide

17. La PazBalandra Bay in La Paz

La Paz features miles of white sand beaches and endless opportunities for outdoor adventure including paddle boarding, kite surfing, kayaking, SCUBA diving, whale watching, swimming with whale sharks, sportfishing, hiking, mountain biking, and much more. If you want your kids off their devices and outside doing stuff you will love it here. Plus, the food is unbelievably good.

Plan your own trip with our La Paz Travel Guide for Families. Plus, Best Places to Stay in La Paz, Mexico and Best Beaches in La Paz.

Conclusion:

So, there you have it, the best of the best family travel locations. There are hundreds of other places that could have made the list but didn’t. These were ones that just barely missed making our list: Las Vegas, Bavarian Alps in Germany, Paris, and house boating on Lake Shuswap in British Columbia. Like Honduras, my kids do not even remember house boating up in Canada, but if they did (well not Jonah, he had yet to be born), I am sure it would have made it onto the list.

Where are your favorite places to take your kids on vacation? We are always taking recommendations and planning our next family vacations. Yes, plural. Why take just one vacation? I think you should take as many as possible, big trips, weekend getaways, family reunions, you name it. These are all opportunities to have fun, spend time together and make the most memories possible. And don’t delay. Noah’s a high school senior and he’s about to move on with his life. (Oregon State University #Bragging) And y’all, I straight up ran out of time with him. You will run out of time, so make today count.

Are you looking for some serious heart-pumping, adrenaline-fueled fun while visiting the Cancun area? Well, look no further than Xplor Park! Located in Playa del Carmen, south of Cancun, this park offers everything from zip-lining to underground river rafting and even jungle off-roading. As a frequent thrill-seeker, I was naturally intrigued by all Xplor had to offer. All four of us loved it! So much, we went twice.

You can visit during the day or during the evening for a nighttime experience called Xplor Fuego. If you are staying at Xcarat Hotel or Hotel Arte Xcarat admission is included in your stay. They even have a bus that will pick you up at the hotel and take you to the park.

Ziplines
Ziplining at Xplor

First up, the zip lines. If you’ve got a fear of heights, you might want to sit this one out. But for those brave enough to take on the challenge, it’s an absolute must. The lines are long enough to give you a real rush but not so long that you start to question your own mortality like Noah sometimes does when we are doing this type of stuff. And the best part? Just when you think it’s over, you fly into a pool of water and end up soaked. (Personally, that’s my least favorite part.)

We like to do the zipline as the sun is setting. The views are incredible. Plus, once it’s dusk there’s fire ring you can zipline through and it makes for a great photo. You will definitely want to purchase the photos here. All throughout the park are photo spots for you to capture great images.

Toboganxote Water Ride

Toboganxote Water ride at Xplor

This is a totally insane water ride that I could only ride once because it scared the crap out of me. All three of my kids loved it. We rode it while it was still light outside but you can also ride it in the dark.

Toboganxote Xplor Water Slide

You have to have four people in a tube and it’s quite the climb up to the top of the ride. The 135 ft climb is worth it though. The Xplor website describes the ride better than I can:

“Go down four different types of descents, starting with the sphere and moving as if you were a pendulum to then reach the half-wave and rise with the inertia to the highest point and continue towards the tube that leads to the whirlpool. Immediately, you will leave at full speed towards the 72-ft (22 m) vortex, the largest in Latin America, to follow the zigzag route towards the final part.”

It was that highest point that is beyond scary. I still don’t understand how we didn’t flip out of the tube.

Underground River Rafting

Next on the itinerary was the underground river rafting. If you’re looking to cool down from the hot Mexican sun, this could be your favorite experience. At night it is pretty dark down there. It was so dark that none of my photos came out and the video I took is took dark to share.

You have to walk through a cave to get to it and I got kind of lost, hence this photo.

LOST IN A CAVE

Jungle Jeep Tour

Offroading at Xplor Fuego

With all the activities being fairly physical, it was a welcome break to just sit back and enjoy the ride. Granted the ride isn’t exactly smooth. If you’ve got neck issues skip this activity.

If you did this activity more than a few years ago you’ll be happy to learn that they expanded the drive and it’s quite long now! So long, we would change drivers half way thru next time!

JEEP INTO THE WATER

One thing to keep in mind is if it has rained recently. One of the times I was here they had a lot of rain and when I hit a puddle a bit too hard I totally soaked us!

Hammock Splash
Hammock splash at Xplor

Lastly, we have the hammock splash. It’s exactly what you think it is. You slide down a short zip line in a mesh hammock and you end up in the water. Sometimes you can race. It just depends on how many workers they have.

Food Included

Xplor is an all-inclusive package which means food is included too. There is an extensive buffet with good food as well as a snack station where you can get tamales and cookies. From what I could tell this park is alcohol free.

Conclusion

If I could sum up my Xplor experience, I’d say it was pure exhilaration. This park is a must-visit for adventure seekers looking for that next-level experience. Be sure to wear water shoes, a swimsuit, waterproof everything including a waterproof cell phone holder, bring and towel, and your sense of humor! You’re sure to walk away with some great memories and an even greater appreciation for living life to the fullest. So, what are you waiting for? Get ready to Xplor!

Pro-tip: Regardless of when you visit, if you’re not wearing waterproof mascara, you might end up looking like a sad, soggy raccoon. I know because that’s what I looked like.

9 Adventurous Things to do in Cancun With Kids

Best Cenotes Near Cancun

Get Travel Insurance

Unfortunately, there are a lot of things that can go wrong on any trip. Be prepared for the worst with travel insurance. We use Travelex or Safety Wing (often cheaper).

Book Flights

I use Skyscanner to find flights. I use it so much, I wrote an entire guide to finding cheap flights with Skyscanner! Another option for finding deals is FlightHub.

Book a Place to Stay

I recommend using Expedia.com or Hotels.com for most hotel bookings. I prefer to book directly with Marriott when I stay there because of their excellent military discount.

If you prefer staying in a vacation rental instead, I recommend VRBO. If you are looking for a hostel, I use HostelWorld.

Choose Activities and Tours

To find great activities in any area I use Viator. If we are visiting a city with lots of popular attractions I always check CityPass, PogoPass, and GoCard to see if they have discount cards available. Groupon also tends to have a lot of local travel deals.

When I want to book a full-on multi-day tour I use TourRadar. They’ve got fantastic weekly deals. If going somewhere in Mexico or the Caribbean, I use Apple Vacations.

Rent a Car or Get a Lyft

More often than not, Lyft is cheaper than Uber. Use my Lyft link for an $18 credit! For a car rental in any country, I recommend Hertz or Discover Cars.

Save Money on Gas

Upside a free app gets you cash back on gas! Use promo code RV2Q2 to get an extra 15¢/gal bonus on your first purchase.

Get a Visa

I use iVisa to get all of my Visas.

Cancun and the surrounding areas offer loads of adventures. From zip-lining to snorkeling to off-roading they have a little bit of everything. Here are some of the best adrenaline-pumping activities in Cancun!

Selvatica

For an epic family adventure, head down to Quintana Roo. Quintana Roo is the Mexican state on the Caribbean coast encompassing some of the best cities in Mexico, including Cancun, Cozumel, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, Riviera Maya, Isla Mujeres, Costa Mujeres, and Puerto Morelos. Between these cities, there is almost every type of experience imaginable. Luxury spas, theme parks, animal encounters, extreme adventure, and of course some of the most beautiful beaches in the world.

To fully experience the area plan to stay a minimum of 5 days. 5 days will allow you enough time to enjoy much of what Quintana Roo has to offer.  If you can stay longer, that’s even better. Our last trip was seven days and I felt that it was not long enough. Here’s a Yucatan itinerary to fill up two weeks!

I recommend doing only one activity a day. If you do an activity one day, take the next day off for a day of beach bumming. You’re on vacation, so don’t run yourself ragged! No matter what you decide to do, remember to bring a bottle of water for each person. Mexico is hot!

Cancun Family Adventure

I finally took my kids to Mexico and it was the best time ever! There is basically an endless amount of fun to be had every day! Not to mention hundreds of places to stay that will accommodate any budget.

If you can afford it, stay at an all-inclusive resort. It’s always nice to dine at lots of restaurants and not worry about the cost because it’s all included.

I recommend The Grand at Moon Palace in Cancun or Grand Velas in Riviera Maya. Grand Velas Riviera Maya has an extensive kid’s club and a ton of baby amenities. The Grand at Moon Palace has loads of kid perks like a water park and a Flo rider! Parents will love the decadent on-site spa, Awe, at The Grand. If you prefer to stay off the beaten path head north to Riu Costa Mujeres.

In Cozumel, I recommend staying at Allegro Cozumel (our Allegro Cozumel review).

12 Crazy Fun Things to do in Cancun

On this last trip our family went looking for adventure and boy did we find it! After swimming through caves, zip-lining, off-roading, rappelling and more we are ready to share our favorite things to do in Cancun with you!

Selvatica

Going on the Superman zip line at Selvatica
Going on the Superman zip line at Selvatica

Selvatica which literally means: “pertaining to the jungle”, has been a fertile campground for explorers and adventurers from many bygone eras.

These days, Selvatica is one of the world’s top adventure parks and is perfect for families! Head over there for the most adrenaline-pumping adventure of your life. While you are here you will do various types of adventure activities like zip lines, swimming in a cenote, off-road through a mud track, and more.

Off roading at Selvatica
Off-roading at Selvatica

Your day starts early when they pick you up from your hotel. Depending on where you are staying it can take up to an hour to drive there. Once you arrive you are in for 5.5 hours of fun.

Buy Tickets: Selvatica averages $99 per person, but it depends on how much or how little you want to do. I recommend getting the “Gimme All” package. This package is $139 for an adult and $69 for kids. This is what we did and it was wonderful.

What you need to bring: beach towel, swimsuit to change into, camera, driver’s license.

Things to know: You will not have cell phone service while out here. They allow you to use a GoPro. Halfway through your day, they will give you a sandwich. Once you are done with all the activities you are given a small meal. I recommend purchasing their photo package.  You can read more in our full Selvatica review.

Pac Chen

Rappelling at Pac ChenPac Chen is a neat adventure that kicks off with a Mayan blessing to protect you during your activities and on your trip home. Here you will partake in kayaking, multiple zip lines, and you will go rappelling into a cave. Once you are in the cave you get to enjoy swimming in a cenote.

They also provide an authentic Mayan lunch that is out of this world good. If you’ve never had Mayan food you are in for a real treat!

Buy Tickets: This tour is part of a Coba tour with All Tour Native. Tickets cost $139 and include transportation.

What you need to bring: Beach towel, swimsuit, dry clothes to change into once you are done, GoPro or other water proof camera and organic sunscreen.

Things to Know: Keep in mind that in order to participate in all the activities children must be 6 years old. Read my post about Pac Chen to learn more.

I also put together a video of our time at Pac Chen.

Xplor Or Xplor FuegoZip lining at Xplor Fuego

Chances are high you’ve never had an experience quite like the one you will have at Xplor. Just the main structure alone is phenomenal. You can visit Xplor during the day or night, both are completely family-friendly.

The admission price includes all the activities and meals. Activities include off-roading jeeps, extensive zip lines, swimming in caves through underground rivers, and much more.

They have snack and drink stops around the park and dinner is a generous buffet. If you need some downtime, you can kick back in the sandy area in a hammock.

Buy Tickets: Tickets start out at $63 per person.

What you need to bring: a beach towel, swimsuit, driver’s license if you are 18 years or older, dry clothes to change into once you are done, GoPro or other waterproof camera, and organic sunscreen.

Things to Know: You are given a locker to keep your things in and they have changing rooms. They provide you with a life jacket for the river swim.

Río SecretoSwimming in Rio Secreto

Río Secreto could very well be one of the great world wonders. Experience this stunning underground river with thousands of dramatic stalactites and stalagmites. It’s like stepping back in time to witness something mysterious and truly spectacular.

Once you enter the cave, it’s completely dark except for your helmet light. You will walk and swim through the cave.

Unfortunately, they will not allow you to take your own photos or videos in the cave, so you will have to purchase photos. Granted, it’s completely black without the lights on, so you would need a pretty substantial camera to take your own photos.

After you are finished in the cave they take you to a buffet to eat.

Buy Tickets: Rio Secreto costs $79 and includes food and drinks. If you need transportation that is an additional fee.

Things to know: They provide you with a helmet, wetsuit, life jacket, and water shoes. You are given a locker to keep your things in and they have changing rooms. You have to wear a wetsuit.

What you need to bring: a beach towel and swimsuit to change into.

Ventura ParkVentura Park Cancun

Ventura Park is a combination of an amusement park and the Wet n Wild water park. Teens especially will enjoy the ropes course, zip lines, go-karts, wave pool, and bungee swing. Parents will enjoy the lazy river and cocktails and everyone will enjoy the arcade with 3D games. For an extra fee, you can swim with dolphins on the other side of the park.

Buy Tickets: Tickets start at $39. You can add on different types of options like the buffet or drinks.

What you need to bring: Beach towel, a swimsuit to change into, and a camera.

Things to know: You are allowed to use a GoPro. You might want to bring water shoes.

In case you need a good laugh, here’s a video of me being pushed off the bungee swing and screaming bloody murder.

Aquarium CancunCancun Aquarium Sea Trek

Aquarium Cancun is another fun place for families, located in the hotel zone at La Isla Shopping Village, and home to 140 different species. Here you can learn about sea life, touch stingrays swim with dolphins and go on an underwater Sea Trek. A Sea Trek is where they put that great big helmet on you and you can walk around underwater.

Near the aquarium is the La Gran Rouda Ferris Wheel with epic views of Cancun. You can purchase an admission that gets you into the aquarium and the Ferris wheel for one price.

Costs: It is $65 to do the Sea Trek.

Things to know: They provide you with a wetsuit and water shoes. They have an underwater photographer that will take your photos. This activity is not safe for someone with epilepsy.

Here is a video of my Sea Trek experience.

Coba Mayan VillageCoba Mayan Ruins

You should not visit here without visiting some Mayan Ruins. This is the perfect opportunity to educate children about Quintana Roo’s rich history and culture.

At Coba, which once was home to 50,000 Mayans, you can climb to the top of a Mayan temple 42 meters high and see what remains of the ancient Mayan city. It is a long walk back to the temple you can climb up, so rent a bicycle for $1 and bike through the ruins.

Costs: It is super cheap to get in. The entrance fee is $38 pesos, under $3.50 USD. You may have to pay another 50 pesos to park your car in their parking lot. If you do a tour, then the costs start our around $68 USD. I went on an excellent tour with All Tour Native that included Coba and Pac Chen for $129.

Things to know: Wear tennis shoes. You can climb the pyramid in the pouring rain. I know, because that’s what I did!

Read my post on the Coba Mayan Ruins to learn more!

Tulum Ruins

TulumThe Tulum ruins is another site that’s worth a visit if you have time. The views here are magnificent. Unlike Coba, you cannot climb up any or ride a bike around. Their two beaches more than makeup for it.

Read my post on the Tulum Ruins for more details.

XensesXenses

Imagine walking alone in complete darkness to navigate your way through a series of different ecosystems, using only the feel of the plants brushing against your sides and the floor of a beach, forest, and the walls of a cave to guide your way. That is just one of the many experiences you incur at Xenses, one of the fabulous parks in the wildly popular Xcaret brand.

Xenses was designed to test and have fun with all of your senses. Not only is it interesting and tons of fun, but I also had one of the best quesadillas I’ve ever eaten underneath an umbrella sky. If you’re looking for a unique, one-of-a-kind experience, then head to Xenses for the day.

Buy Xenses Tickets: Tickets start out at $63 per person.

Things to know: There is a point where you are alone in the dark for 15 minutes. If you have a medical condition like epilepsy do not do this.

XENSES

Xel-HaXel-ha Park

Xel-Ha is a fun way to spend a day. The park is packed with activities. We tried the massive body slide that goes round and round and that was super fun. The slide on the outside goes way faster than the one on the inside.  We snorkeled through mangroves and go to see lots of fish. You can lounge around in a tube, enjoy a buffet, short ziplines into the water, and so much more.  For an additional fee you can to a sting ray experience that’s so much fun.

Buy Xel-Ha Tickets: Tickets start out at $103 when purchased in advance.

Things to know: This park is huge and you will walk a lot. You will want to be wearing comfortable water shoes. Also, they provide towels so you will not need to bring one.

What you need to bring: A swimsuit to change into, water shoes, and a camera.

XcaretXcaret Park

Xcaret park is not the same thing as Hotel Xcaret. This is a park that is super fun. You can swim through a river with bats overhead at times, chill out in hammocks, swim in natural pools along the beach and more. In the evening they do an outstanding show, Xcaret Mexico Espectacular, that takes you through the history of Mexico that you will not want to miss. Before you head into the show make sure to walk through their Mexican Cemetary it is so well done.

Buy Xcaret Park Tickets: Tickets start out at $111 when purchased in advance.

Things to know: Unlike the other parks affiliate with Xcaret this one is not all-inclusive. Lunch and snacks are an additional cost.

What you need to bring: Beach towels, water shoes, a swimsuit to change into, and a camera.

Fun Fact: When you stay at Hotel Xcaret Arte all of the Xcaret affiliate parks are included.

Speed Boat Tour with SnorkelingSpeed boat and snorkeling tour cancun

This speed boat tour is outrageously fun. On the way out you will drive your little boat through mangroves out into the Caribbean. When you get out there you have the chance to snorkel and so far this is the best snorkeling I’ve done in Cancun that’s out in open water.

Buy speed boat tour tickets: Tickets start out at $59.

Things to know: You are in full sun the whole time so wear a spf shirt of lots of sunscreen.

What you need to bring: Beach towel, water shoes, sunscreen, and a camera.

There are many more things to do in Cancun, but these are our current favorites. I hope you love them as much as we did!

Last week I was lucky enough to be one of the first travel writers to experience Hilton Cancun Mar Caribe formally known as Royal Uno All-Inclusive Resort & Spa. I gotta say they’ve knocked it out of the park with this beachfront property located in the world-famous Cancun Hotel Zone. Royal Uno Cancun

Sometimes when companies do a refresh like this on an older property it isn’t a huge difference but this just isn’t the case at Hilton Cancun Mar Caribe. They gutted it and completely redid it. The resort features an impressive array of amenities including two oversized pools, a children’s pool with a water play area, Alea Spa, watersports, a swim-up bar, and a beach bar with swings. The resort was extremely family-friendly.

Kids Club Kids club at Royal Uno

The kids club was super clean and all the kids I saw in there playing appeared to be having a wonderful time.

There is a mascot that floats around the resort. It typically makes an appearance in the lobby to keep kids entertained while families wait for their rooms.

Cancool Family RoomRoyal Uno Cancun

There’s not much to this family Room but they do have an area for video games and movies, a pool table, and more.

Hilton Cancun Mar Caribe Rooms

Grand Suite at Royal Uno Resort in Cancun

Royal Uno is home to 540 rooms that are retro-decorated to remind you of old-school Cancun. All rooms and suites feature an open design, a private ocean-view terrace or balcony, queen or king-size beds, smart TV, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth speakers, a coffee maker, and a minibar. Some of the rooms have Nespresso machines.

Equipped for a comfortable and relaxing stay, the suites feature an independent living and dining area, a tub and separate shower in the bathrooms plus a spacious terrace for those magical Caribbean sunrises. The Romance Suites also offer jacuzzis, and there are 13 ground-floor beachfront suites with plunge pools.

Spectacular BeachRoyal Uno Cancun beach

I was BLOWN away by the beach. It was perfect. The color of the ocean was mesmerizing, the beach was clean, and there was no seaweed! The hotel is in the hotel zone which basically only has nice beaches. I didn’t edit this photo, that’s exactly what it looks like! the waves were perfect and people were boogieboarding.

PoolsPools around Royal Uno Cancun Resort

They say they have two pools and that is true. There are two main pools, but the adults-only Star bar has four pools and then there is an area overlooking the ocean that also has four pools. There are also a handful of super nice rooms that have plunge pools right outside their doors. I was super jealous that I didn’t have one.

Restaurants at Hilton Cancun Mar Caribe

Royal Uno offers an exclusive dining experience with seven restaurants and bars serving international, Mexican, Italian, and Asian cuisine, a café, and a Grab & Go counter. They also have a couple of nice bars. Kids have a separate band that distinguishes that they are a minor and are not to be served at any of the bars. I appreciate this since I have a 15-year-old that everyone thinks is 22!

PalotintePalotinte at Royal Uno Resort

Mexican food! You cannot go to Mexico and not consume as much Mexican food as possible. They have a roaming taco cart serving tacos al pastor (my favorite), it’s a must! Make a reservation. Dress attire: Resort casual

MiamareMiamare at Royal Uno Cancun

This is an Italian restaurant and they are dishing up some delicious pastas, pizzas, and more.  Stir up some drinks alongside Royal Uno’s mixologist to learn a new cocktail recipe or two. They serve an aperitif made with aperol and juices that can only be found at this restaurant. It’s delicious so be sure to order one. Sadly, I cannot remember the name of it. Make a reservation. Dress attire: Resort casual

AoraAora restaurant at Royal Uno Cancun

Aora is the resort’s Asian restaurant serving dishes from Japan, China, Thailand, and India or Teppanyaki-style dishes. Your kids will love the Teppanyaki as they cook right in front of them and set things on fire! Make a reservation. Dress attire: Resort casual

Faro 32 Coffee Shop

Faro 32 Coffee Shop is the best place to grab some coffee and enjoy it with some cookies, pastries, ice cream, or crepes.

Star BarStar Bar at Royal Uno

Royal Uno’s rooftop bar serves crisp cocktails and fresh ceviche. This cool open-air bar is ideal for a Cancun afternoon taking in the sweeping vistas of the Caribbean blues. Plus, there are no kids allowed so it’s extremely quiet.

Alea Spa

Alea Spa at Royal Uno The spa was absolutely delightful. They have a hydrotherapy with a steam/sauna, cold plunge pool, warm jacuzzi, hot jacuzzi, and some outdoor relaxation areas. I had a Swedish massage while I was there and it was so good I kept falling asleep.

Fitness CenterFitness Center at Royal Uno

The fitness center was well-equipped. Free weights, weight machines, and cardio machines are available. There are foam rollers too.

Recommended Attire

The climate in Cancun is semi-tropical, with an average yearly temperature of 78°F, which can rise to 95° in the summer. Comfortable casual attire for the day and casual resort wear for the evening is recommended. I did a terrible job packing, so be sure to pack your bag with the following:

  • Casual and dressy resort wear for the evening
  • Dry fit, lightweight pants, and long sleeve shirt
  • Bathing suit
  • Sunscreen and hat
  • Sandals and water shoes
  • Toiletries and personal medications
  • Sunglasses
  • Phone charger

There is much more to the Yucatan Peninsula than just beaches and rich history. Discover ancient ruins, explore Mayan jungles, and indulge in the region’s incredible culture and food. Here is our guide to the very best things to see and do in the Yucatan Peninsula aka Quintana Roo.

Yucatán is probably better known for its resorts and beaches, but it offers many fascinating experiences for travelers of all kinds.

1. Tour the ancient Mayan ruinsCoba Mayan Ruins

The Maya people were the original inhabitants of what is now southern Mexico and Central America and were known as the most advanced civilization in ancient Mesoamerica. Mexico and Central America. Now, travelers can find and explore literally hundreds of Mayan ruins strewn throughout the peninsula.

Chichen Itza, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is probably the best-known of the archaeological sites. It draws over a million visitors per year and is an excellent example of beautifully-preserved Mayan ruins.

It was once one of the greatest cities in the Central American region, strategically located adjacent to cenotes. This provided the ancient inhabitants with constant access to fresh water.

Today, the site spans over 5 square kilometers of stone and rock fortresses, amid a dense jungle environment.

You’ve probably seen images of the Kukulcan temple – also known as El Castillo – because of its stunning beauty. Still, considering the fact that the area has been excavated for over a hundred years, means there is much more to explore in Chichén Itzá.

Another worthy site of Mayan ruins to explore is Calakmul. This ancient Mayan city is situated deep in the jungle in Campeche, near the Guatemalan border. Due to its remote location, it’s far less touristy. It’s definitely a great option for travelers looking for a unique, less well-known ancient city.

At Calakmul, visitors can find two humongous pyramids that you can still climb!

Uxmal offers travelers the opportunity to explore ancient temples from the inside, a la Indiana Jones. This allows you to admire the beautifully-preserved detail in the stones from up close.

Coba, which is an ancient city a short-ish drive up from Tulum, boasts two lagoons and a huuuuge network of rocky causeways. There are also a number of pyramids, also open to visitors to climb if they’re feeling adventurous.

Take a dip in the world-renowned cenotesJade Cenote

You may have heard of the Yucatan’s famous cenotes, but what exactly are cenotes? Put simply, a cenote is an underground cave with varying depths of freshwater. The area is littered with cenotes, which open up into a large network of underground rivers. The Mayans strategically placed their ancient cities with access to the cenote’s water.

Cenotes are a super fun way to cool off in the (sometimes brutal) Mexican heat. These natural swimming holes were made when the bedrock above caved in, allowing access to the water below.

There are literally thousands of different cenotes on the peninsula. Some of the most famous are Dos Ojos, Azul, Gran Cenote, and Jardin del Eden. Don’t forget your biodegradable sunscreen!

If you are a certified PADI diver, scuba divers can also explore these underwater caves.

Explore the Island of Cozumel

The Beach at Fiesta Americana Cozumel
The Beach at Fiesta Americana Cozumel

Cozumel is a relaxed island accessible by ferry. It makes for the perfect day trip from Playa del Carmen. Much of the island is untouched, meaning there are less ostentatious resorts and bawdy tourists to deal with.

On Cozumel, you can explore the ‘capital’ of San Miguel, experience some of the best diving and snorkeling in the Caribbean Sea, learn about pearl farming, and much more. Taking a day trip to Cozumel will give you a great taste of what life is like on the island, but there are also accommodations available if you want to dive a little deeper (pun intended) and experience all it has to offer.

13 Things to do in Cozumel

6 Day Cozumel Itinerary

Indulge in Local Cuisine

La Mission in Cozumel
La Mission in Cozumel

Mexico is known around the world for its delicious local cuisine that is steeped in culture and tradition. You could live exclusively off of street food in the Yucatan, making it also one of the most affordable places to get delicious food.

Local Yucatecan cuisine consists of Sopa de Lima, Cochinita Pibil, Queso Relleno, and Dulce de Papaya. Of course, there is no shortage of tacos and tortas in the area, either!

Be sure to try huevos motuleños for an excellent, traditional breakfast.

Experience Nightlife in Cancun or Playa del Carmen

Party in Cancun
Enjoying a night out in Cancun Joe’s Daily and Jina.

Cancun has earned itself the reputation of being nothing but tourists and resorts. What was once the most popular area in the Yucatan to visit has slowly become one of its least visited, for this very reason. Travelers are instead opting to visit Playa del Carmen or Tulum for an (albeit only slightly) more authentic experience.

Still, Cancun still has a thriving nightlife, with plentiful tequila and mezcal, margaritas and more.

Playa del Carmen may not have the same debauchery, but it also has an amazing nightlife scene.

Both cities are great for party-goers. Just remember some ibuprofen for the inevitable hangover!

Snorkel or diveSnorkeling in Cozumel

The best snorkeling and diving in the area can be found off the island of Cozumel. The crystal clear turquoise waters here give you a clear view of the underwater realm.

The Yucatan peninsula also offers some unique experiences to swim with marine life. This includes swimming with sea turtles at Akumal Beach and swimming with whale sharks from Isla Holbox.

Be sure the tour operator you are going with facilitates a sustainable, eco-friendly experience that is minimally invasive. Avoid any tour operators that ‘guarantee’ anything, as well as those that don’t require the maintenance of a safe distance from the underwater critters.

Soak up the sun on its white-sand beaches

The beach at Grand Bahia Principe Tulum
The beach at Grand Bahia Principe Tulum

The most beautiful beaches in the Yucatan peninsula are undoubtedly found in Tulum. Tulum is a great place to explore on the peninsula, particularly if you’re into spirituality and yoga. Despite the fact that the area has substantially grown in tourism over recent years, it still offers somewhat of a reprieve from the more touristy areas in the region. Expect to see plenty of hippies, backpackers, and alternative crowds here, as well as the occasional celebrity.

Tulum’s stretch of Caribbean coast boasts the most beautiful white sand beaches with clear, cerulean waters. You can dive, snorkel, kite surf, take a beach yoga class, or do plenty of other water activities.

There are a number of private beach clubs that are operated and owned by locals, where you can rent a chaise, order drinks, and bask in the Caribbean sun.

7 Stunning Cancun Beaches

See the pink lake at Las Coloradas

A few hours drive from Cancun, on the perimeter of the Ría Lagartos Biosphere Reserve, is a wondrous place where visitors can see the environmental magic of a pink lake. Who doesn’t love pink lakes?!

One can come here and truly appreciate the magic of chemical reactions, where red algae, plankton, and shrimp inhabit the salty environment. As the water evaporates in the smoldering Mexican sun, the organisms become more concentrated, amplifying the bright pink hue of the lake.

The Las Coloradas lakes are used in sea salt production at an industrial level. You can meander around the shores of the lakes, taking epic photographs, on a trip to Las Coloradas. A rental car is the best way to access this magical area.

Explore cities like Merida and Valladolid

Merida Cemetery
Merida Cemetery

Mérida is a city on the tourist radar, but not nearly as widely visited as Cancun, Playa del Carmen, or Tulum. Still, it’s a very charming city that has plenty to do. While you’re here, don’t forget to pick up a handwoven Mexican hammock, available in a myriad of brightly colored threads. There are a number of green parks and city squares that provide ample opportunities for relaxing, people-watching, or simply sipping a drink, taking in the colorful vibes.

Sundays are a great day to visit, as the city fills up with markets, local food vendors, cyclists, and more. Also on Sunday nights are cultural shows and concerts featuring local musicians, all available for free! The Sunday night events take place on Paseo de Montejo.

Grab a bite to eat at Manjar Blanco, for some of the most delicious Yucatecan food in the area. But make sure you head there for lunch, as they are closed for dinner service.

The town of Izamal, pictured above, is a gorgeous Mayan town painted in shades of vibrant yellows.

If you’re into architecture, head to Valladolid to see some gorgeous examples of local, ornate buildings.

Finally, head to the small fishing village of Puerto Morelos. This is a lesser-known small town that still boasts that authentic Mexican charm that you may be seeking. It’s located roughly halfway between Cancun and Playa del Carmen.

Head to the shores, stick your toes in the water and enjoy a glass of chilled tequila.

Get lost in Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve

If you head a little south of Tulum, you’ll encounter over one million acres of protected land and sea at the Sian Ka’an Bio Reserve. This place is chock full of indigenous flora and fauna, including some species that are rare and endangered. These include the West Indian manatee and the black-handed spider monkey.

Sian Ka’an is a designated UNESCO World Heritage site, and boasts the title of ‘largest protected area in Mexico’.

The best way to experience Sian Ka’an is to take a boat (available for hire) into the lagoons, where you will lazily float through the network of water channels surrounded by dense jungle and mangroves.

If you visit the coastal side, an ocean safari experience awaits. You can catch a glimpse of dolphins and sea turtles in their natural habitat while having the experience of snorkeling over the protected coral reef system.
